TL;DR
Mountain Island and Sunbeam Landing Site
The Mountain Island is one of the best locations to find diamonds. The caves on this island are rich with Shale Outcrops, which can yield diamonds [1:1]
[3:3]. This location is often referred to as the "gun island" due to its association with a significant plot point in the game
[5:6]. Additionally, when you receive transmissions from the Sunbeam, the rendezvous area they indicate is also a good place to search for diamonds
[1:1].
Shale Outcrops
Diamonds can be found by breaking Shale Outcrops, which are scattered throughout various biomes. Besides the Mountain Island, the Jellyshroom Caves are another location where these outcrops are plentiful [4:5]. It's important to note that while some areas may have hostile creatures, such as Reapers, staying near the surface or exploring land-based caves can minimize danger
[3:7].
Sparse Reef and Mushroom Forest
The Sparse Reef is highlighted as a resource-rich area, including diamonds, though it is deeper at around 200-300 meters [1:4]. The Mushroom Forest also contains Shale Outcrops, particularly in the northeastern section
[4:1]. These areas are generally safer compared to others infested with more aggressive fauna.
Scanner Room Usage
For those who have progressed enough to build a Scanner Room, placing it near a beach or a known diamond location can help locate Shale Outcrops more efficiently [4:7]. This method can save time and increase your chances of finding diamonds without extensive searching.
Safety Tips
While exploring these areas, it's crucial to be aware of potential threats like Warpers and Reapers, especially when diving deep or venturing into less secure zones [3:10]. Carrying medkits and being prepared for quick escapes can enhance your safety during these expeditions.
I need diamonds for a laser cutter and looking it up online doesn’t give clear directions/instructions. Was looking for some help from people who have played the game
It depends on how far along into the story you are. Pretty early in the game, you start getting transmissions from the Sunbeam. When they organize a rescue point, that area is a good place to find diamonds. Alternately, when you get the transmission for lifepod 13, you can also find diamonds in that area. If you find any Shale Outcrops, they have a chance to produce diamonds.
Ok, sunbeam is launching in 15 mins as of right now, so go to the spot that they are saying the landing point is?
Yes, if you explore the upper areas of the island, you should find diamonds.
If you have a seamoth, wait for the sunbeam to give you a beacon then follow it. There should be diamonds there. Ps: Do NOT go deep at all in that area!
I love the sparse reef. Nothing at all is hostile except tiger plants and it’s great for resources. Mainly diamond, gold, lithium, ruby, gel sack, and uraninite. It’s rather deep though at 200-300 ish meters
Checking the wiki is always good for information. Honestly the easiest way to get it is to go to (SPOILER) >!the island to the North and search the caves.!<
Thank you! As of now sunbeam arrives in 13 mins and I’m at the island searching around
Everybody keeps telling me to search near the island where sunbeam was gonna land i seached the whole area near there did not find any diamond or any shale outcrop help me :(
Look underwater. There should be caves. Be careful tho, a reaper is close.
Do you know where magenetite is located?
Go to the back of phi robotics base, there should be an ore vein. If not you can't look under the iceberg and there should be a bunch of ore veins with magnetite.
Go inside the cave system inside the island. There are outcrops all over the walls with diamond in them.
Can the scanner room also find this stuff?
Sure can! Just have it search for shale outcrops, not diamond
i dont want to insult you but... are you blind? just go to the caves
No harm done mate ;) but for real i just checked them only found 1 wich had gold in it
I need a single more diamond to get a laser cutter, but when i search for where to get them i only get places that are dangerous or far down to get many, but i only need 1, where can i find it?
One of the two islands has lots of diamonds, gold, and lithium available on it. It can be reached from the moment you start the game. Personally this is my go to spot. You can literally swim there by staying surface level and never run in to a single enemy. Don't dive under the island but rather go on to the land. There are land spiders on the island that do very minimal damage, but other than that it's perfectly safe. You will find "shale" rocks in caves that you can break to get diamonds etc.. I believe it's the sunbeam rendezvous point. Be sure to check your radio in your life pod often as it will give you updated points of interest to visit including this one!
Best place in the game for diamonds is >!the mountain island!<
Jellyshroom cave!
This is probably the best place early on.
nah QEP island caves. treasure trove of shale outcropping resources. and if you know where to look magnetite too around the island in the water.
Meh... the depth is pretty deep early on. Personally I prefer going to the island. Only land spiders to contend with and you won't run into a single reaper or enemy if you stay at surface level.
or the portal cave in the mushroom forest.
I built a oxygen tube from the surface down into there when I did that!
If you can make your way to the island where sunbeam said to meet there should be some easy rocks for diamond there. In the cave system.
Just be careful of warpers and the reaper
Shale outcrops above surface on the northern island. It's safe and has unlimited foot/water
Where are diamonds found because I'm trying to make the last cutter and I cant find any.
Check the mountain island above ground cave system. You should find brown stones that if you break give diamond and lithium
I found a few in the mountain island just wander around until you find some caves there quite a bit of minerals in there.
There's a wall in the north east mushroom forest, there's a bunch of shale there. Alternatively, in the caves of the mountain island to the north, there is a BUNCH of diamond in shale.

Subnautica was the first game that I got pissed about finding diamond. I needed lithium lol
Lithium is super common the mushroom forest just go there
I know, but i already collected all the depisits sitting out, and the shale kept giving me diamond and gold. Didnt have the prawn suit either
In the early game, the easiest way to get them is from the jellyshroom caves, sometimes you can find them near the entrances (Shale outcrops).
If U still haven't figured it out 7 months later I would build a scanner room, put it near a beach, and scan for shale.
Edit: my bad I think this post is 7 minutes old not months
I think the m means minutes but thanks still
Need a laser cutter and, also where do I get the fragments?
[Spoiler] try the gun island and the caves near it, they usually have a lot of shale outcrops and if you break enough you will get diamond
Are the mushrooms forests deep enough
Dont take that out of context
They have shale deposits which can drop diamonds yes.
Ah ok
The purple mushroom caves right below the starting area have loads of shale outcrops. Break them and you'll get diamonds.
Ok thanks
They spawn pretty deep, but u can get them from shale outcrops
(spoilers) at the gun island! there’s a TON of shale outcrops in the caves there
Above land or under the water?
above land!
I found so many at this island and it just made the thing that makes you go really fast in water with the battery and went over there being med kits though there’s a bunch of crabs and if you go in the cave you can find diamond there are probably other ways but that’s the easiest I think
I need Diamonds to make a Laser Cutter so I can get into the Prawn Bay and Captain's Quarters in the Aurora
In the jellyshroom caves, that cave system with pink mushrooms and crabsnakes, there are a lot of shale outcrops, that contain diamonds.
If you can, there’s a lot of shale outcrops in the jellyshroom caves, in which you can find diamonds
Go to the gun island and explore the mountain caves you will find a shale outcrop then break it
Farm those big critters that walk around in herds
They're hard to find and I don't think he can go to their depth yet.
Best place is mountain island caves. I would also recommend the mushroom forest to the Northwest and the jellyshroom caves. Diamonds are found in shale outcrops
Currently I have a seamoth, and a base in mushroom forest. I have been to the mountain island and found 2 diamonds which I used to make a laser cutter. Now I need to find diamonds so I can make the Prawn Suit.
sea treaders path loads of diamonds and lithium. look up directions
There’s so much shale for diamonds inside the mountain on the mountain island
The non-floating island provided almost all the diamond I needed for the rest of the game
The very easy option is to build a scanner room on your base and set it to look for shale outcrops.
The vertical-ish cliff bits to the sides of the mushroom forest are a particularly good place to look.
I'm deliberately not mentioning locations you haven't mentioned yourself, because I don't want to spoil anywhere for you even a little, but suffice it to say there's a good amount out there to find.
Have fun! :)
Don't worry about spoiling anything - I have accidentally spoiled the whole game to myself 3 moths ago by watching a playthrough because I didn't ever think I would play the game
Aaahh, gotcha. You'll already have spotted that the three types of outcrops go along, more or less, with increasing depth - little sandstone and no shale in the safe shallows, and so on. Diamond does sometimes pop up on its own, especially in pretty deep and hot places, so bear in mind that you'll be able to collect more later if you need it, but otherwise, just look for shale - it's not as if it's likely to be a problem if you get lithium or diamond instead.
Or go to the jellyshroom caves
You can go to the jellyshroom caves they have a ton of shale outcrops which can give you diamonds
I was checking my collections and realized I was missing a mineral. I didn’t even know there was a diamond in the game. Has anyone gotten it before?
I got diamond many times. Was the first rare mineral I got
It’s crazy how random this game is I swear.
Do not stop the search. Collectibles are difficult to find in this game. Even hours spent staring at the screen, scanning every square inch of the yard, is not enough to guarantee you’ll find them. I still have many categories to complete, especially at the resort. I have found all the minerals, photos, and toys. The diamond you search for will show up one day, I hope it arrives soon
It took ages for me to find it then I first found it at the resort. Once I had it I got it twice more in quick succession! The randomness is chaotic!! I’m missing three bugs and when it rains I search like crazy, but to no avail 😔
You can always get the rain bottles in the flee market.
I know. I buy those, but still never get the three bugs I need 😩
Yeah! I did find the diamond in mine but it took a long time, probably several generations before I found it. But I think it depends on how often you play the game. I found it during the time when I was really opening the game from time to time.
I think I’m going to start doing that. I’m on my 15th generation and I somehow just noticed I was missing it.
i got it in my first generation
it’s totally up to luck
i still havent found the past photo piece yet :))
