Where to Find Diamonds in Subnautica

TL;DR

  • Look for Shale Outcrops, especially on the Mountain Island and near the Sunbeam landing site.
  • Safe places include island caves and the Sparse Reef.

Mountain Island and Sunbeam Landing Site

The Mountain Island is one of the best locations to find diamonds. The caves on this island are rich with Shale Outcrops, which can yield diamonds [1:1][3:3]. This location is often referred to as the "gun island" due to its association with a significant plot point in the game [5:6]. Additionally, when you receive transmissions from the Sunbeam, the rendezvous area they indicate is also a good place to search for diamonds [1:1].

Shale Outcrops

Diamonds can be found by breaking Shale Outcrops, which are scattered throughout various biomes. Besides the Mountain Island, the Jellyshroom Caves are another location where these outcrops are plentiful [4:5]. It's important to note that while some areas may have hostile creatures, such as Reapers, staying near the surface or exploring land-based caves can minimize danger [3:7].

Sparse Reef and Mushroom Forest

The Sparse Reef is highlighted as a resource-rich area, including diamonds, though it is deeper at around 200-300 meters [1:4]. The Mushroom Forest also contains Shale Outcrops, particularly in the northeastern section [4:1]. These areas are generally safer compared to others infested with more aggressive fauna.

Scanner Room Usage

For those who have progressed enough to build a Scanner Room, placing it near a beach or a known diamond location can help locate Shale Outcrops more efficiently [4:7]. This method can save time and increase your chances of finding diamonds without extensive searching.

Safety Tips

While exploring these areas, it's crucial to be aware of potential threats like Warpers and Reapers, especially when diving deep or venturing into less secure zones [3:10]. Carrying medkits and being prepared for quick escapes can enhance your safety during these expeditions.

ORIGINAL POST

I need diamonds for a laser cutter and looking it up online doesn’t give clear directions/instructions. Was looking for some help from people who have played the game

It depends on how far along into the story you are. Pretty early in the game, you start getting transmissions from the Sunbeam. When they organize a rescue point, that area is a good place to find diamonds. Alternately, when you get the transmission for lifepod 13, you can also find diamonds in that area. If you find any Shale Outcrops, they have a chance to produce diamonds.

Ok, sunbeam is launching in 15 mins as of right now, so go to the spot that they are saying the landing point is?

5 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 6 years ago

Yes, if you explore the upper areas of the island, you should find diamonds.

If you have a seamoth, wait for the sunbeam to give you a beacon then follow it. There should be diamonds there. Ps: Do NOT go deep at all in that area!

I love the sparse reef. Nothing at all is hostile except tiger plants and it’s great for resources. Mainly diamond, gold, lithium, ruby, gel sack, and uraninite. It’s rather deep though at 200-300 ish meters

Checking the wiki is always good for information. Honestly the easiest way to get it is to go to (SPOILER) >!the island to the North and search the caves.!<

Thank you! As of now sunbeam arrives in 13 mins and I’m at the island searching around

Go to the back of phi robotics base, there should be an ore vein. If not you can't look under the iceberg and there should be a bunch of ore veins with magnetite.

One of the two islands has lots of diamonds, gold, and lithium available on it. It can be reached from the moment you start the game. Personally this is my go to spot. You can literally swim there by staying surface level and never run in to a single enemy. Don't dive under the island but rather go on to the land. There are land spiders on the island that do very minimal damage, but other than that it's perfectly safe. You will find "shale" rocks in caves that you can break to get diamonds etc.. I believe it's the sunbeam rendezvous point. Be sure to check your radio in your life pod often as it will give you updated points of interest to visit including this one!

Meh... the depth is pretty deep early on. Personally I prefer going to the island. Only land spiders to contend with and you won't run into a single reaper or enemy if you stay at surface level.

I found a few in the mountain island just wander around until you find some caves there quite a bit of minerals in there.

There's a wall in the north east mushroom forest, there's a bunch of shale there. Alternatively, in the caves of the mountain island to the north, there is a BUNCH of diamond in shale.

In the early game, the easiest way to get them is from the jellyshroom caves, sometimes you can find them near the entrances (Shale outcrops).

If U still haven't figured it out 7 months later I would build a scanner room, put it near a beach, and scan for shale.

The very easy option is to build a scanner room on your base and set it to look for shale outcrops.

The vertical-ish cliff bits to the sides of the mushroom forest are a particularly good place to look.

I'm deliberately not mentioning locations you haven't mentioned yourself, because I don't want to spoil anywhere for you even a little, but suffice it to say there's a good amount out there to find.

Have fun! :)

Don't worry about spoiling anything - I have accidentally spoiled the whole game to myself 3 moths ago by watching a playthrough because I didn't ever think I would play the game

2 upvotes on reddit
R
RafRafRafRaf · 4 years ago

Aaahh, gotcha. You'll already have spotted that the three types of outcrops go along, more or less, with increasing depth - little sandstone and no shale in the safe shallows, and so on. Diamond does sometimes pop up on its own, especially in pretty deep and hot places, so bear in mind that you'll be able to collect more later if you need it, but otherwise, just look for shale - it's not as if it's likely to be a problem if you get lithium or diamond instead.

3 upvotes on reddit
Ok-Kaleidoscope4543 · 4 months ago

Do not stop the search. Collectibles are difficult to find in this game. Even hours spent staring at the screen, scanning every square inch of the yard, is not enough to guarantee you’ll find them. I still have many categories to complete, especially at the resort. I have found all the minerals, photos, and toys. The diamond you search for will show up one day, I hope it arrives soon

1 upvotes on reddit
AntelopeOk9212 · 4 months ago

It took ages for me to find it then I first found it at the resort. Once I had it I got it twice more in quick succession! The randomness is chaotic!! I’m missing three bugs and when it rains I search like crazy, but to no avail 😔

Yeah! I did find the diamond in mine but it took a long time, probably several generations before I found it. But I think it depends on how often you play the game. I found it during the time when I was really opening the game from time to time.

    • Look for diamond deposits on the seafloor.
    • Be cautious of hostile creatures in this area.
  2. Mountains:

    • Explore the rocky outcrops in the Mountains biome.
    • Diamonds can be found in the deeper areas, often near the edges.
  3. Lost River:

    • This biome has several diamond deposits.
    • Navigate carefully, as it can be dangerous with aggressive fauna.
  4. Crystal Caves:

    • Diamonds are commonly found among the crystal formations.
    • Bring a good light source to help spot them.
  5. Sea Treader’s Path:

    • Check the areas where Sea Treaders roam; they can uncover diamond deposits.

Tips for Efficient Mining:

  • Use a Laser Cutter or Diamond Pickaxe to mine deposits quickly.
  • Always carry extra oxygen tanks or a Seamoth for extended exploration.
