What Redditors are Saying

Most Popular K-Pop Boy Groups

TL;DR

 • BTS remains the most popular globally, even during their hiatus.
 • Seventeen and Stray Kids are strong contenders for the second spot, with Seventeen more popular in Korea and Stray Kids internationally.

BTS's Continued Dominance

Despite taking a break due to military service obligations, BTS continues to be recognized as the most popular boy group both domestically and internationally [2:3]. Their influence is so significant that they are often considered the benchmark against which other groups are measured [4:5].

Seventeen and Stray Kids

Seventeen and Stray Kids are frequently mentioned as top contenders for the title of most popular active boy group in BTS's absence. Seventeen has a strong presence in Korea, dominating charts and selling out concerts [2:1][2:5]. Stray Kids, on the other hand, have gained substantial popularity internationally, breaking records and having a significant presence in Western markets [2:11][2:6].

Other Notable Groups

TXT, Ateez, Enhypen, and NCT are also frequently mentioned among popular boy groups [3]. TXT, in particular, has been noted for their growing popularity in Korea [2:8], while Ateez and Enhypen have made waves internationally [4:4]. NCT, with its various sub-units, maintains a strong fanbase both domestically and abroad [2:7].

Generational Shifts

The discussions also highlight generational shifts in popularity. While older groups like Bigbang and EXO were dominant in previous decades [5], newer groups such as Stray Kids and TXT are gaining traction, particularly among younger audiences [2:9]. This shift reflects changes in musical styles and fan engagement strategies over time.

Recommendations for Further Exploration

For those interested in exploring the rankings and trends of K-pop boy groups over the years, resources like K-Ville Entertainment offer detailed insights into song popularity and chart performances [5:1]. These can provide a broader understanding of how different groups have evolved and maintained their popularity across generations.

now that bts is taking a break due to the military, who do you think is considered the most popular active boy group while they’re away? i have a feeling it’s different in korea and internationally, but what’s your opinion?

Can’t believe you forget TXT, I’ve heard ppl talking about TXT in public, was teaching English for a bit and all the kids were moas 😭 txts also the ones charting more. I think most seventeen fans are older tho

they had a sold out fanmeeting a few months ago, and two sold out concerts at seoul’s second biggest venue (after the olympic stadium) two weeks ago. not every group can do that, they’re definitely immensely popular here. also i’m a teacher here and they’re the only boy group i’ve ever seen my kids mention (including BTS), so they’ve gotta be doing something right. koreans really love felix’s visuals, he’s the only male photocard i’ve ever seen in a korean’s phone - it’s usually an ive or aespa member

seventeen is really dominating the korean charts this year so i would say them for korea, but i would say stray kids internationally (they are definitely going to end up beating seventeen’s latest preorder album sales records next week lol)

i’m sorry but this simply isn’t true lol. ‘nugu’ literally means ‘who’, and they’re from a big 4 company and easily one of the biggest 4th gen boy groups. they broke the record for most orders in hanteo charting history with their last comeback, and they’re predicted to take that record back from seventeen next week. the meme of changbin’s rap from S-Class was huge here in korea when the song came out, it was a big tiktok thing. i hear their songs in shops and cafes all the time. there’s absolutely no metric by which stray kids are considered ‘nugu’, they’re huge here

There are actually a lot of Stray Kids fans when you talk to the current group of Korean college students.

SEVENTEEN comes first, but I would put NCT and Stray Kids close to each other after that.

I think that their fans were just younger and less noticeable. But now that the fans are in high school and college, they are becoming more noticeable online.

I wonder if the same thing will be true of NMIXX in a couple years.

I have a feeling they’ll focus on solo works like BTS since some members have been putting out solo releases lately and they seem really interested in it. Plus, their bond as a group is really strong. They probably do not want to promote with a member/s missing. But if they promote as 11, that might affect their sales a bit. One of the two oldest members, Jeonghan, is one of the most popular members, being the most popular in some countries like Japan. And S.Coups is pretty popular too. I can imagine that this will affect some people’s interest to support their OT11 comebacks. They’ll still earn success and good amount of sales, but it will probably be a bit less than what they’re getting right now.

It’s still BTS, but if you’re asking for the second most popular boy group, then probably Seventeen or Stray Kids. Their fandoms have gotten huge over the years, and they’ve been breaking lots of records recently. Seventeen seems to be more popular in Korea than SKZ, while SKZ seems to be more popular internationally. But they’re pretty much neck and neck.

Sadly though, Seventeen will also be entering their enlistment era soon as two of their oldest members (95 liners) will have to enlist by 2024.

Most popular boy and girl groups of the year

Posted by Akira_XD_69 · in r/kpophelp · 1 year ago

So yeah, since its december already lets talk about the most popular ACTIVE bg and gg who made waves around the world. Also a little heads, i tried to fit in all the groups based on charting and sales, touring, brand rep, etc. so popularity isn't something that can be quantified easily. It may vary slightly but feel free to add reasons as to why or why not certain groups are popular, but be RESPECTFUL (also tell me if i missed something, i'll just edit it later).

Boy groups- Stray kids, Seventeen, TXT, Ateez, Enhypen, NCT Dream/127

No particular order but i think Skz and seventeen were the best groups this year coz well for skz the bbmas, vmas, their albums, plus the two billion streams this year, rockstar and 5star were total bops (felt sad that they didn't win much at mama, mma, etc but still da best). I'm not a carat so idk much but it's pretty noticeable when someone shatters album sales records left and right lol.

Girl groups- NewJeans, Aespa, Gidle, Le sserafim, Ive, Twice, Blackpink

No particular order but imo newjeans was just another level with almost three billions streams this year and the brand rep (crazy for a groups that debuted just a year ago). Internationally they have captured the audience really well with their new concept and also coz the group overall interacts in english a lot more compared to typical kpop groups since they have two aussies as well.

All the other groups have also done really well.

shouldn’t bp be included if u are including streams and brand rep… they were able to get number 1 in brand rep this year and hit 3B streams despite having only 1 new single and headlined the most popular us music festival and had the highest grossing K-pop tour of all time with like 1.7M attendees that was 100% sold out just to name a few things so I think not releasing an album shouldn’t discredit them considering they were on tour until September

look bp is mainstream at this point and no one denies it, it's just that they didn't do a single album this year that's all, meanwhile some other groups had multiple comebacks. But ok i'll include them.

Its funny that you didnt considered naming blackpink at first when they literally did the best in almost all the criteria you mentioned 🤷🏽‍♀️😭 but apparently headlining 2 major festivals in 2 of the biggest music markets, having an audience of 1,8M in a 66 dates tour, being the first girlgroup in history to headline a concert in Stade de France, being the first girlgroup to perform in gocheok sky dome in Korea, charting in global spotify an unpromoted game OST and in billboard global charts, wasnt being active enough and isnt a sign of popularity either lol its not making waves😭

If you go by domestic charting, girl groups generally have the edge (in the past 6 months the only two idol groups to get a #1 on melon were red velvet and apink). If you go by physical sales/fandom size, boy groups do far better. If you go by popularity in the west, BTS obviously wins out there.

About even I guess. It's not something about gender. It just depends on the group. There are Twitter boy group vs girl group fans, but that doesn't represent popularity. Most groups from the Big 3 companies, Produce series, BTS are the top sellers and most well known right now.

Girl groups tend to fly better with the public in terms of charting, but boy groups are more likely to have dedicated fans, especially because most Kpop fans are female.

There's a lot of different factors that could determine the "popularity" of a group (the number of fans in the fanclub? how many countries stream/buy their music? how many awards the group wins?) It's really hard to make such a sweeping generalization over the entire industry. For example, if you're going solely by name recognition, BTS is probably the most well-known K-pop group globally, but even then that's just one boy group and doesn't speak to boy groups in general being more popular.

Top 10 Ranking of BG & GG Idols on YouTube Music Korea (Past Year)

Posted by Organic-Cranberry955 · in r/kpopthoughts · 1 day ago

As some of you may know, YT Music is now by far the most widely used streaming platform in Korea, taking up nearly two-thirds of the market share (Melon sits at around 30% these days). The GP largely relies on YT Music as their primary source for listening while Melon has become more of a stronghold for dedicated idol fandoms.

So with that in mind, here's a look at the top 10 most listened idols on YT Music to see who both fans and the GP have been streaming the most over the past year.

*This ranking is limited to idols (not all artists)
*The data was gathered over the span of ~52 weeks (1 year frame) from top weekly songs and the total sum determined the ranking.
*(M = million)

BG & Soloists (Top 10)
10. Saja Boys (120M) – Hard to believe they’ve cracked the top 10 after just three months of debut.
9. Stray Kids (134M) – Fascinating to see the contrast between their massive international standing and more modest domestic numbers.
8. N.Flying (140M) – While not huge overseas, their recognition in Korea has steadily grown.
7. BOYNEXTDOOR (154M) – The only 5th-gen BG on the list, a strong showing for rookies.
6. WOODZ (182M) – Incredible that he’s this high essentially off the back of Drowning. A true mega hit.
5. BTS (197M) – The boys remain a global powerhouse, and still secure 5th place domestically.
4. SEVENTEEN (260M) – Their music resonates even more with the Korean GP than it does internationally.
3. G-Dragon (431M) – His first comeback since 2017, and the numbers are absolutely bonkers for a soloist.
2. BIGBANG (439M) – Nearly a decade without full group activity, yet they soar to 2nd. Just mind-blowing longevity. Korea's most beloved BG indeed.
1. Day6 (617M) – Crazy numbers. This band has an undeniable grip on the GP. At this point, people will stream anything Day6 puts out. Major props.

GG & Soloists (Top 10)
10. LE SSERAFIM (188M) – 4th gen GG with multiple hits secure their spot at #10.
9. Jennie (209M) – Like Jennie was a smash, and her album has been embraced by both fans and GP.
8. Taeyeon (210M) – SNSD’s powerhouse vocalist continues to prove why she’s one of K-pop’s most successful soloists. Longevity at its finest.
7. BLACKPINK (240M) – Their long awaited group comeback and tour solidify their place here. Not surprising for one of K-pop’s biggest names.
6. QWER (290M) – Their anime-coded, nostalgia tinged sound has clearly struck a chord on GP. Surpassing some of the names below them is quite a big surprise.
5. Rosé (321M) – Apateu, Apateu. Enough said.
4. IVE (344M) – A string of 2025 releases in Attitude, Rebel Heart, and XOXZ keeps their momentum strong and lands them at #4.
3. NJ (361M) – Not too shabby for a group that’s been inactive.
2. IU (430M) – She’s been putting up numbers like this since 2010. Her career is untouchable at this point.
1. aespa (549M) – The undisputed winners of 2024. Supernova and Whiplash continue to dominate replayability. Whiplash is still putting up better numbers than Dirty Work despite it being a nearly one year old song. They would have to release a huge hit to maintain the top spot in this ranking next year. Nonetheless, the number 1 spot is very well deserved.

HUNTRIX didn't make the top 10 unfortunately. They are somewhere in the top 11-20 along with artists like TWICE, 2NE1, Idle, NMIXX, BM, RV, Kiof, Fromis9, and Illit. But if we're only looking at the recent data since their debut, they are at the top spot, completely uncontested.

I think this list is more accurate if we’re talking about total sales , it includes albums, physical singles , digital singles, and downloads sold globally — not just physical albums tracked on Korean charts like Gaon or Hanteo like in the list you posted it mainly shows Korean album shipments, which don’t count digital single sales or international sales on platforms like iTunes, Amazon, or Oricon in Japan. And that’s why groups with massive digital hits worldwide (like BTS or Blackpink) show much bigger sales on this list, it reflects their overall impact outside Korea too.

Can you explain what this is measuring or link the source? Where’s The Beatles, Coldplay, Queen, Backstreet Boys, The Beach Boys and many more groups? Or is this only a certain date? I don’t understand what the criteria is? The Beatles have sold 600 million albums worldwide. Is this just in Korea or worldwide?

This list only includes groups of the 21st century — debuted between 2001 to the present. Coldplay debuted in 1997, so they’re not included.

I thought about making a list like this, but since kpop is a korean based genre, i only counted korean charts, but you are right with everything you said

Holy. Stray Kids really are JYP's sales -- no wonder they were releasing music twice a yr they gotta make that bag😭 stays are also very obsessed with boasting SKZ's sales for being a relatively newer BG as compared to the other bestselling giants, ofc the company will utilise the fans well.

The person who posted said it only included groups that debuted in the 21st century so it wouldn’t include Destiny’s Child but something isn’t adding up with the data anyway because Little Mix and PCD and The Jonas Brothers would be on it in that case. I wonder if it’s just for Korea or Eastern regions.

It only includes the group. In total the solos sold about 14.6 million copies. Imagine that also added. They are insane.

Does this involve their sub units and solo activities if so I don't think they should count imo

Does. For everyone. Practically impossible for groups to be complete at all times. Subunits and solos still carry their group's name.

For subunits I get but solos I disagree. I think they shouldn't be classified as their group. But that's my opinion

I think it's involved solos and subunit too as some of the members have regular shows each week and why they're the most busiest. And it's also the reason why other group with many members (17, nct etc) also in the top busiest schedules

Who are the most popular kpop boy group

Key Considerations for Popular K-Pop Boy Groups:

 1. Fan Base Size: Popularity can often be gauged by the size and engagement of their fan base, known as "fandoms." Groups with large, dedicated fandoms tend to have a significant impact.

 2. Music Releases: Look at the frequency and success of their music releases, including chart performance on platforms like Billboard and Gaon.

 3. Social Media Presence: Active engagement on social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, TikTok) can indicate popularity and influence.

 4. Awards and Recognition: Winning awards at major music shows and ceremonies (like MAMA, Melon Music Awards) can reflect a group's popularity and industry recognition.

 5. International Reach: Groups that have successfully expanded their fan base internationally often rank higher in popularity.

Most Popular K-Pop Boy Groups (as of 2023):

 • BTS: Known for their global impact, record-breaking albums, and extensive fan engagement (ARMY).
 • Stray Kids: Gaining immense popularity for their unique sound and self-produced music.
 • SEVENTEEN: Recognized for their impressive choreography and strong performances, with a dedicated fan base (Carat).
 • NCT: A large group with multiple sub-units, known for their diverse music styles and concepts.
 • ENHYPEN: A newer group that quickly gained popularity after their debut, known for their strong performances and storytelling.

Recommendation: If you're looking to explore K-Pop, starting with BTS and Stray Kids can provide a great introduction due to their extensive discographies and impactful music videos.
