What Redditors are Saying

Most Popular K-Pop Solo Artists

TL;DR Popular solo artists include IU, Taeyeon, Hwasa, Chungha, and members from BTS like Jungkook and Jimin.

Successful Solo Careers from Group Members

Many K-pop idols have transitioned successfully into solo careers while still being part of their original groups. For instance, Baekhyun from EXO has been recognized for his successful solo career with multiple hits and collaborations [1:3]. Hwasa from Mamamoo is noted for her chart-topping solo releases [1:2][1:4]. Similarly, Taemin from SHINee and Solar from Mamamoo are also celebrated for their solo work [1:8][1:7].

Billboard Success

Several K-pop soloists have reached impressive positions on the Billboard 200 charts. Notably, Jungkook, Jimin, SUGA (Agust D), and V from BTS have all reached top positions with their solo albums [2:1]. Rosé from Blackpink also made a significant impact with her solo album [2].

Established Solo Artists

Some artists are known primarily for their solo work, independent of any group affiliations. IU is one of Korea's most beloved soloists, renowned for her vocal talent and emotional delivery [5:3][5:4]. Other notable soloists include Lee Hi, Chungha, Sunmi, and Hyuna, each praised for their unique styles and stage presence [5:2][5:3].

A-List Recognition in Korea

In terms of widespread recognition in Korea, artists like IU, G-Dragon, and Rain are considered A-list celebrities due to their long-standing influence and popularity across various demographics [4:1][4:6]. Super Junior members, particularly those active in variety shows, are also household names [4:3].

Solo Artists Outside Group Contexts

There are solo artists who have established themselves outside of their group contexts. BOA, Dean, and Lee Hi are examples of artists whose solo work stands independently [5:4]. Woodz, although originally part of Uniq, is often recognized more for his solo endeavors [5:8].

ORIGINAL POST

Found this post and started thinking about all the K-pop stars who went solo and did it well. This mentions some of the names we know, and I see it includes both people whose groups have disbanded or who are still part of it. These are more or less the stars we see on the daily, but what are some K-pop stars whose solo stuff is really worth checking out?

I loved all of Mamamoo solo stuff but Hwasa seems to be the most succesfull(charting wise) and Solar technically just has 1 song while Byul and Hwasa have mini albums with multiple songs.

it's probably mainly because she just got one single and one mini, both are very successful but it doesnt show if she wants to continue solo career or just one off thing

I think exo produced very successful soloists

Baekhyun currently have the best of both worlds he is a monster physically (million seller) and doing very well with osts as well. Her released 3 osts all of them did well especially my love which is longest charting exo solo song. It just surpassed beautiful goodbye by Chen. In addition to his collab with bol4. This year is baekhyun year. He is the top active idol soloist in town now.

Lay is one of the top artists in China.

Chen did very well in 2019 beautiful goodbye was a hit with longivity and both albums sold quite good.

Suho album was doing very well as well it charted and he sold almost 300k copies which is very very good

Chanyeol is literally every where this year from collabs to osts. He is building his reputation despite not having a solo album.

D.o has a very promising solo career mainly as an actor 100 days my prince was one of the Highest rated cable dramas of all time. I think he has potential musically from how his station before military was doing well.

Sehun, Kai and xiumin I'm looking forward to their future endeavors.

You should check out Seongwu's debut album and the title track Gravity and his project with Starship Heart Sign. Heart Sign in particular is one of my favorite releases from any of the ex wanna one members (alongside with Kang Daniel's 2U/WHOUR)

also as a side note, I think the writer of the article mixed up something, Kang Daniel didn't take a six months break in 2019 to focus on his mental health and future, but rather he was completely blacklisted from the industry and couldn't even make his debut because of the ongoing lawsuit against his former agency LM/CJ entertainment. The break he took for his mental health was at the end of 2019 right after he released TOUCHIN' and it lasted around two months (it's an important distinction that i felt like pointing out because his struggles against his former agency was likely the cause for the majority of his mental health issues).

T
tastetherainbeau · 4 years ago

I'm glad you corrected that about Kang Daniel. His first hiatus was the complete opposite of a mental health break lol and the whole lawsuit is worth mentioning as it was a pretty pivotal step in his career. But anyways it's awesome seeing him listed among so many prominent soloists, really happy seeing him make a name as a soloist, he's been putting out such great stuff

Agreed about Ong Seongwu! I love his voice and I hope Fantagio will give him an opportunity for another album after his new drama

I genuinely wonder about the future of kpop solo acts from 4th gen in the USA. All these soloists are the big strongholds of bts, twice and blackpink- all hugely popular in the USA.

When you compare those numbers to say- stray kids and txt. Will they see similar results for their soloists one day? Who knows. We didn’t see these sorts of sales numbers for Yeonjun but ggum was really divisive. Maybe a more pop song would have better results? And this also makes me wonder what sort of results the rappers in stray kids will have if they do a solo project- seeing as the rapline in America sells fairly well.

And on a personal note Jimins sales vindicate what I have been experiencing for AGES as a Jimin bias in the states. It is freaking impossible to get him for group orders and it’s in no small part due to how popular he is. I also remember once going to a kpop shop and the owner asked me my bias and then interrupted before I could answer and said “let me guess… Jimin?”

Just an anecdote but I love having a number to point to the general vibe I’ve had for the longest. He’s very popular in America.

I also wonder if V will have more sales if his next project skews more pop? I know he’s making the music he loves and I am all for that! Merely voicing my own curiosity on the matter because I freaking love his music, don’t get me wrong. R&B and jazz are just not as strong of genres in America as pop or hiphop.

what idols are truly "a-list" in korea (and/or in their home country)?

Posted by amondayk · in r/kpopthoughts · 28 days ago

i was just thinking about how small the a-list truly is. to me, a-list means a group of people that everyone, even 80 year olds, know and/or recognize. in america, i would consider this to be people like tom cruise, taylor swift, oprah, etc. that being said, which idols fit that criteria in korea and/or their country of origin? i am assuming idols like iu and g-dragon would probably apply (though honestly i don't know), but what about super popular newer idols like wonyoung? let me know what you guys think!!!

Korean here, G-Dragon / IU / Lee Hyori / Suzy / Psy / Karina / Cha Eunwoo / BTS(only as a group cuz many Koreans don't really know all the members) / Blackpink / Jang Wonyoung

My partner agrees with you l. Even Karina, maybe not for her singing or dancing but she is everywhere and the pinnacle of beauty standards. Even her aunties and uncles who live in the countryside know Karina.

Agree with the BTS group as well, other Taehyung but she wouldn't consider him S tier yet.

She mentions don't forget GP include the 25+ adults and the males, which kpop fan tend to neglect, which is a huge portion of the Korean gp

She mentions yoo jae suk who is the most popular Korean in South korea

How likely do you think it would be for the BP members to be known individually? They're a smaller group and seem to have larger differences between them so I assume they're easier to end up knowing who they are as a non-fan.

They are well known, to varying degrees by the members ofc, but Jennie is certainly the most popular in SK. But they are practically nugus to the older demographics.

I’m curious, I know NCT is not GP famous but is any member emerging as someone non fans recognize? I think about Doyoung doing a lot of variety shows recently and his brand of rock music seeming to be played in many shops when I went out in Seoul earlier this year. Mark who is modeling for Tim Horton and in two bands plus solo, Jaehyun who is famed for being handsome and had a solo last year. I was just curious if a group that large and with such an odd concept has anyone that is becoming recognized by the average Korean person.

2 upvotes on reddit
theofficallurker · 28 days ago

This isn’t a popular truth in kpop spaces but the Super Junior variety show members are absolutely household names, Leeteuk, Heechul, and Shindong.

Edit: You can downvote it because you hate them. But I’ve seen little kids talk about Heechul even now. And older ladies love Leeteuk because of his hosting of a popular cooking show. Shindong is a very well known gagman/host. A-list doesn’t always mean shiney kpop fame, sometimes it means that guy on public broadcast tv both you and your mom and your grandma know the name of.

This is quite a difficult question to answer without offending anyone, but the simple answer is very few. JYP, PSY, Rain, I U for sure, but then they are not the traditional idol.

I'm afraid to say that from there the average person on the street out in rural areas will probably recognise Suzy, Lee Hyeori, Heechul and Leeteuk because they all have a large presence on tv. There will be others from older groups but to be frank, the younger 4th/5th gen groups all fade into eachother, mostly because every new release they change their hair colour and no-one can keep up with who's who! Try watching EXO's Call Me Baby, then you will understand!

Idol music isn't really that big in Korea and each generation has their own favourites but some of the older ballad or trot singers are huge.

Oops I forgot a huge one, Lee Sung Gi, all the grandma's know who he is! ❤

116 upvotes on reddit
Porg11235 · 28 days ago

This is the only correct answer. Everyone else is not understanding the question. Having a large fanbase or being known among people who already follow the current generation of idols does not an A-lister make.

39 upvotes on reddit
PurpleHymn · 28 days ago

That's why I thought of Super Junior instantly - they've been a constant presence on TV for 20 years. I have a Korean friend in her 30s that says her mom likes Heechul 😂 And, for example... I know TVXQ was a phenomenon, but even then I'm not sure they're as recognisable.

So I'd say BoA, Rain, Super Junior (Heechul, Leeteuk, Shindong, Kyuhyun), SNSD (Taeyeon, Yoona), IU...

Your top kpop soloists that aren’t group members?

Posted by vminguk · in r/kpophelp · 3 years ago

I wanted to see who were the top/most popular kpop solo artist but in all the lists i see kpop idols that have debuted solo but are still active in their respective groups.

I wanted to know who your top soloists are that promote strictly solo!

I know any idol who’s debuted solo is a soloist (not trying to discredit them in any way), but i’m asking mostly because i want to get an idea of the “ranking” of idols who when you listen to their songs you don’t immediately think of their group, like established solo names, if that makes sense. I just don’t want my words to be taken negatively. So i’m not sure if what i asked makes sense rip.

If BH used US sales for fan calls and raffles - it would help immensely with these numbers. Jin had good numbers on Hanteo but I think those are some from army from US too.

They can't, if they tried to, the sales wouldn't count for US charts. No US sales ever count for fan calls or raffles, specifically because they are raffles. Some hanteo sales may be from US stores if the store is registered with Hanteo, but if they are registered with Hanteo they may then not count for US charts.

iz*one's k-members should all go solo

Posted by noyeetlmao · in r/unpopularkpopopinions · 4 years ago

right now izone is the most successful 4th gen group and almost every member (except like 2-3)are overwhelmingly popular, especially wonyoung and minju and I don't think their company are able to transfer the fame into groups because most of the members comes from small companies. I think they should all go solo (except J-line because they're loyal af to akb48 so that's why they're excluded in this) because their stans wouldn't stan the other members when they go to their respective groups. weki meki is still known as doyeon&yoojung & friends well over 3 years of debut for example.

and I feel like everyone is under this illusion that you have to be the best singer and the best dancer combined to go solo but that's not true at all. everyone can go solo.

If they go solo they're not gonna be very successful, they're not THAT popular as individuals. The hype around them is gonna slow down when Izone disbands, we've seen this happening already with IOI and Wanna one.

42 upvotes on reddit
CleverTripod · 4 years ago

Kpop fans always vastly underestimated how hard it is to be successful solo artist especially for girls as gp support is almost a necessity. You’re also completely overestimating the individual popularity of the members none of them except wonyoung are anywhere near popular enough for it to be a sure bet. That’s not to say none of their companies should try but it’s not going to be the walk in the park some fans think it will be.

I think they should be added to small groups in their company with 4-7 members max.

I don't think kpop fans know how hard is to survive solo in music industry as a idol, is harder than in groups. Izone members also don't have much individual recognition.

Are there any idols who are more successful as solo artists than as part of their group?

Posted by legacyhunter47 · in r/kpophelp · 2 years ago

I am looking only in terms of music, not acting or modelling.

Found a similar question on r/music and wanted to see how it applies to kpop.

Rain is so successful as a solo artist that most people don't even know he used to be in a K-pop group.

Edit: This post contains acting and modeling too but still it might be helpful.

Edit 2: According to the post in the link Somi, Chungha, Jessi, Zico, Hyuna, Lee Hyori, DPR Ian, Woodz are more successful as solo singers.

kim wooseok, who's (used to be?) a part of up10tion. he definitely found a lot more recognition after finishing second on pdx 101 and becoming a part of x1 than he did as a part of his original group. he may not be extremely popular, but he has music show wins when up10tion has none, and his solo eps even have more sales than the group's latest few albums.

lee jinhyuk, also from up10tion with the stage name wei, also participated in pdx101. he didn't make it to the final lineup and isn't as successful as wooseok, but he got a lot more fame after going solo than he'd have ever gotten in the group.

Personally quite like the songs that up10tion have put out post produce x 101. Especially this years's crazy about you. Not sure if top media could have ever handled kim wooseok's akgaes and lee jinhyuk's akgaes the way ist ent (formerly play m ent) handled han seungwoo's akgaes (han seungwoo is in victon), but maybe if top media had taken a leaf or two from ist ent's book up10tion would do better with kim wooseok. Not sure about lee jinhyuk tho bcs his akgaes are quite hostile following the whole confirmation that he was one of the participants that had been rigged out

yesss, i'm so glad top media didn't cut down on the quality of up10tion's releases to focus on wooseok and jinhyuk. their combacks have been great so far. i've always kinda been on the fence about wooseok and jinhyuk rejoining the group—while it would've really given the group a boost and given them more recognition (and as much as i would've liked that), it would've really skewed the popularity rankings among the members (with wooseok already having been the most popular within the group) and top media probably knew that they wouldn't have been able to handle that, which is why they choose to give the two solo careers instead. i only just wish they'd release some sort of official confirmation that they're both no longer in the group, along with some update on jinhoo.

I remember people knowing HyunA more than 4Minute but I wasn't sure if it okay to say that HyunA was more successful as a solo artist since 4Minute was still a successful group.

considering they only had 1 song, or atleast title track, I wouldn’t consider the group itself more popular than woodz. they did get a lot of recognition though you’re right. I think if they continued on longer I would definitely consider them more popular based on overall stats

TIL: Most of our favorite Korean entertainers are in their 40s and 50s now

Posted by EpikMint · in r/koreanvariety · 4 months ago

I just did some research after thinking about the recent talks of celebrities who got married or are getting married this year.

While we still love our favorite entertainers in Korea today, most of them are already past their 30's. For reference, here are the top 15 entertainers according to Gallup Korea's poll for the favorite entertainers last 2024 chronologically :

  1. Yoo Jae Suk (52)
  2. Shin Dong Yup (54)
  3. Kang Ho Dong (54)
  4. Park Na Rae (39)
  5. Lee Kyung Gyu (64)
  6. Jang Do Yeon (40)
  7. Lee Su Geun (50)
  8. Tak Jae Hoon (56)
  9. Kim Jun Ho (49)
  10. Jeon Hyun Moo (49)
  11. Seo Jang Hoon (50)
  12. Park Myung Soo (54)
  13. Lee Yong Sik (73)
  14. Lee Yong Ja (57)
  15. Haha (45)

Also here are the notable people who are still active and popular with their variety show appearances (including those who are 35+):

40-50+

  • Kian84 (40)
  • Lee Soo Ji (40)
  • Kim Hee Chul (41)
  • Ahn Young Mi (41)
  • Jang Sung Kyu (42)
  • Boom (42)
  • Moon Se Yoon (42)
  • Jo Seho (42)
  • Kim Dong Hyun (43)
  • Song Ji Hyo (43)
  • Yoo Se Yoon (44)
  • Shin Bong Sun (44)
  • Kim Jong Min (45)
  • Hong Jin Kyung (47)
  • Defconn (48)
  • Kim Jong Kook (49)
  • Cha Tae Hyun (49)
  • Kim Sook (49)
  • Choo Sung Hoon (49)
  • Na Young Suk PD (49)
  • Kim Young Chul (50)
  • Lee Sang Min (51)
  • Song Eun Yi  (52)
  • Park Soo Hong (52)
  • Kim Sung Joo (52)
  • Kim Gura (54)
  • Park Joon/Wazzup Man (55)
  • Ji Suk Jin (59)

35-39

  • Lee Yi Kyung (36)
  • Kim Won Hun (36)
  • Yoo Byung Jae (36)
  • Joo Woo Jae (38)
  • Yang Se Chan (38)
  • Kangnam (38)
  • Yang Se Hyung (39)
  • Lee Kwang Soo (39)
  • Jeon Somin (39)
  • Shin Dong (39)
  • Lee Yong Jin (39)
  • Choi Daniel (39)

Most of the people above will be in their 50s-60s in ten years (probably if we're talking Korean age lol). They'll likely cut back on work or maybe even start enjoying retirement.

What I’m slightly concerned about, though, is that most of them have been the dominant faces in Korean entertainment for the past 10–15 years, regardless of their main job. Meanwhile, the younger ones—including 4th and 5th gen idols—are mostly active on online platforms like YouTube, OTT/Streaming sites (Coupang Play, TVing, Netflix, etc.) and Weverse. So either there will be a shift in Korean TV, or some new faces will step up and become the next generation to take over.

Here are some younger entertainers under 35 who come to mind right now and who I believe are notable for their appearances on TV and/or streaming:

  • Lee EunJi
  • Lee Youngji
  • Oh My Girl's Mimi and Hyojung
  • IZ*ONE line - Yujin (IVE), Yena, Chaeyeon, Sakura (LSF), Eunbi
  • Dex
  • Ji Ye Eun
  • Joo Hyun Young
  • Kim Ah Young
  • Hyeri
  • Jonathan & Patricia Yiombi
  • La Chica's Gabee
  • NMIXX's Haewon
  • Jenny Park
  • BTS' Jin
  • Eom Jiyoon
  • BamBam
  • I-dle's Miyeon, Shuhua and Minnie
  • Chuu
  • EXO's Kai
  • SHINee's Key
  • BTOB's Lee Changsub
  • Lee Mijoo
  • Dindin
  • Billie's Tsuki
  • Lee Chanwon (KBS's Daesang winner 2024)
  • Livestreamers - Mimiminu, Kwaktube, Woojunging, etc.

We still have yet to see how their careers will go in the future. That said, I hope the current stars in Korean entertainment feel good about what they’ve done so far, and that the younger ones find success as they move forward.

Right? I also have my own data (ref: brikorea) — For many months/years now, Kim Heechul has been the 3rd to 5th youngest among the top 50 entertainers. That field values age, 'familiarity,' and experience.

In contrast, among the top 50 K-Pop idols, Kim Heechul is the oldest. That field values youth, 'freshness,' and beauty.

That said, variety/TV is one of very few paths, within entertainment, that KPop idols can go to once the idol spotlight dims. The other alternatives: Go solo, do a YouTube show, or go to acting field.

Super Junior, though, is still very much thriving and busy, even as they enter their 20th year this November. They seem to be proving that idols in their 40s can still go for it. But their advantage is that they’ve been involved in both variety and idol fields since day one. Maybe that’s the golden formula for longevity. (Shindong, Kyuhyun, Siwon, Leeteuk and Eunhyuk are also very much active in variety).

I do remember, though, that Lee Kyung Kyu (I think) and a few other comedians/variety personalities have warned Heechul that once his beauty fades, it will be much tougher for him in variety, because by then, he’ll be competing on pure wit and variety talents against those who are real comedians-- subtle way of saying variety shows only get idols for their beauty and to draw in younger fans.

>subtle way of saying variety shows only get idols for their beauty and to draw in younger fans.

What's interesting and sad tho is that idols from the last 2 generations were rarely visible on TV and were mostly active on YouTube and Weverse. It's even worse for nugu groups, which are currently oversaturating the industry.

Edit: To add, only few idols on the 4th-5th gen are being casted on TV or appear as a guest based on either their popularity online or being liked by key people on variety shows. Eunbi, Haewon and Yujin are examples for that.

Tbh with the state of Korean variety at this point, there won't be another entertainer winning 20 daesangs in a row.

Personally feel like with the way new long running network shows (with same hosts) aren't really a thing and the fact that ALOT of personalities are doing youtube shows, we will never get "Nation's MC" type of title again.

I think this is a result of the internet. Back when there were only a few TV channels, if you were famous the entire country or world knew who you were. Now, everything is so spread out you can't get as famous.

Are there any really famous American movie stars these days? The really famous ones are all old. I can't even name a young star anymore.

Same with poker players. The really famous names are from back before the internet took off.
