TL;DR The most popular K-pop girl groups currently include BLACKPINK, TWICE, NewJeans, IVE, LE SSERAFIM, and aespa.
Current Popularity Rankings
Across multiple discussions, BLACKPINK and TWICE consistently appear as top-tier groups, often referred to as "S Tier" or "S+ Tier," indicating their solidified status both domestically and internationally [2:3]
[3:1]. Other groups frequently mentioned in the top ranks include NewJeans, IVE, LE SSERAFIM, aespa, Red Velvet, and (G)I-DLE
[1:1]
[1:2]
[2:4].
Regional Differences
Popularity can vary significantly between regions. For example, BLACKPINK is noted for having a strong global presence, while groups like Oh My Girl have significant domestic popularity in South Korea [2:7]
[2:1]. The Korea Institute of Corporate Reputation also provides rankings based on brand value, which can differ from general public perception
[1:4].
Historical Context
TWICE had a golden era from 2016-2019 with numerous chart-topping hits and awards, particularly in Japan [5:2]. However, their popularity in Korea has seen fluctuations due to changes in musical style and external factors such as online hate campaigns
[5:4]
[5:9].
Influence of Digital and Physical Sales
Groups are often ranked based on digital and physical sales, public recognition, and individual member popularity. BLACKPINK and TWICE excel in these areas, maintaining high sales figures and visibility across various platforms [3:1]
[3:2]. Other groups, like Mamamoo and Apink, also hold significant public recognition and fandom size
[3:2].
Emerging Groups
Newer groups like NewJeans, LE SSERAFIM, and aespa are quickly rising in popularity, with unique concepts and strong fanbases. Their future potential is promising, though they may not yet have the extensive catalog or historical impact of older groups [3:11]
[3:12].

This is essentially brand reputation index. Not at all accurate. Oh my girl isn’t more popular than twice.
Is AllKpop bad? Sorry I’m kinda not informed 😭
Ive is popular
ive, newjeans, le sserafim, aespa, bp, twice ?
If you want to be kept updated on which groups are popular in the industry, I totally recommend checking out music streaming sites and viewing the charts! The most widely used site is called 'Melon', you can just search 'melon hot 100' and you'll get the link. For now, the biggest ggs are: NewJeans, IVE, LE SSERAFIM, aespa, and (G)-Idle.
I have been out of the loop for over a year and just came back to the genre!
Edit: Whoa, this kinda blew up. I understand people are passionate about their ults, but I just wanted to know what I missed and who are popular! Be nice!
In terms of current relevancy in SK its Blackpink > Aespa > Twice. RV could be up there too, depending on how this cb goes
when we talk about south korea alone I feel like oh my girl should be mentioned too no, although they're more like a recent trend I assume? they have the two longest charting gg songs of all time and their album last year had the most digital points of all gg albums
☆ Blackpink & Twice (S Tier)
☆ Aespa, ITZY, Red Velvet, MAMAMOO (A Tier)
☆ Gidle, Apink, OMG (B Tier)
☆ LOONA, STAYC & Fromis_9, Dreamcatcher (C Tier)
☆ WEEKLY (C- Tier)
☆ EVERGLOW, PURPLE KISS, LIGHTSUM, Billlie (D Tier)
☆ PIXY (F Tier) they are too underrated for the amount of talent they have 😔.
NMIXX & Kep1er are too new for me to place them just yet, so for now I'd rather not rank them.
EDIT: After furthur discussion with another commentor, I have decided to remove IVE from the list. Just like with Kep1er and NMIXX, IVE is also too new to be currently ranked.
weeekly is far outselling everglow in physicals and afterschool still charted higher on domestic charts than any everglow song, so i would swap them out for everglow in c-tier.
Ooof. What is an s tier? This is rough. And I totally woulda thought stayc would be higher. Need my everglow girls to move up the list
S Tier refers to "Solidified Groups." Groups who are both solid career wise (have established themselves in the industry) AND solid in popularity (hugely popular both domestically AND internationally). No gg that I have listed comes close to those two group, that's a fact.
Not sure how you can rate Dreamcatcher or STAYC as a C tier groups when they both outsold the entirety of the B tier groups in 2021.
Stayc is definitely more popular than Dreamcatcher and Loona
Blackpink, Twice and Aespa are the top ones rn i think (there’s obviously a lot more famous ggs)
Twice, Red Velvet, Blackpink, Itzy ig and aespa
Globally
BLACKPINK>>>>TWICE>>>ITZY>>>>RED VELVET>>GIDLE
Korea
BLACKPINK>>AESPA>>>>RED VELVET>>OH MY GIRL>>>>STAYC
i think blackpink > aespa > oh my girl >> red velvet tbh… oh my girl are bigger than you think, they even lead the voting for girl groups at mma 2021 beating aespa, and dun dun dance is still charting on melon
We know who the top 2 girlgroups are, but would Mamamoo be third? I know it used to be RV for a long time, but they haven't had a full group comeback in a long time and there was some controversy last year, Mamamoo seems to be going strong.
I don't have any attachment to either group but it's fun to discuss this sometimes, especially if you don't take anything personally (some people get really defensive about these things?)
I'm a big fan of statistics so I like comparing how different groups are doing, even if I don't listen to them that much.
While we're on the topic, now that Iz*one is disbanding (disbanded?) Who would you say the top 4th gen group is? It's a lot less obvious than 3rd gen imo. Personally I'd say Gidle, since they have decent korean and western digitals (spotify). Itzy are right behind them though, cause they have better album sales (160k vs 200k so not that much of a difference) and better youtube views. In my opinion, in order of importance it's album sales > korean digitals > western digitals > youtube views, but I know people can disagree. If Itzy's sales rise this comeback then I'd say they're first. It could go either way imo!
Apart from these 2, possibly Loona is next? They sold around 100k, they don't have amazing digitals or views yet, but Chuu is everywhere lately and love4eva is one of the best songs I've ever heard, and Star has been getting radioplay.)
I'd say overall popularity wise it's:
SS tier: Blackpink
S tier: Twice
A tier: Mamamoo, Red Velvet
B tier: Gidle, Itzy
C tier: Oh my girl, Loona, Apink, Gfriend, Dreamcatcher, WJSN In that order.
Personally I have high hopes for Stayc and I wonder how Brave Girls' careers will develop.
Just currently active groups.
And then I would say most of the groups people mentioned here unfortunately I would considered nugu in Korea. Almost no public recognition whatsoever. I wouldn’t have known them if not from reddit ㅜㅜ
I've been listening to Rollin and We Ride every day at work. I listened to their old songs too, they're really good, not sure if you know but they're produced by the same person who produced AOA's Heart Attack.
Do you live in Korea? I'm wondering cause our lists are quite different! I was surprised by April and Dia, who I would put at nugu tier, especially Dia, since April were in the news for unfortunate reasons.
Didn't expect Apink to still be higher than Red Velvet, is it because of Irene's controversy?
I didn't think Lovelyz were still this popular, I'm glad, I liked Ah Choo.
And also Brown Eyed Girls, didn't think they'd still be this high either. It's great to see so many senior girl groups, since I read somewhere that Lee Hyori(?) was told that 25 years old is too old to be in a girl group, I love that things are changing.
I'm in the UK, boy groups and girl groups are quite popular here, but really the singing kind, not really dancing and singing. In recent years One Direction and Little Mix were massive. They ALWAYS had concerts here. They would be on tv all the time and would be popular with teenagers.
If I were to rank kpop groups on how popular they are here, I'd say:
SS tier: Blackpink, they are really the only kpop gg that the gp (teenagers and people in their 20s) would be aware of currently
S tier: Twice, there's a LOT of ArmyOnce here
A tier: Red Velvet and Mamamoo, they're known for songs like Bad Boy, Psycho, and Hip.
B tier: Everglow, Itzy and Gidle, Everglow's songs are popular with kpop fans here but they don't really have a fanbase, Itzy are popular for mostly their dances and Gidle came out with a few popular songs like Latata, Senorita, Oh My God.
Loona has a very strong core english speaking fanbase, I'd put them between B and C.
C tier: aespa (they have 1 song but Black Mamba was talked about quite a bit), Momoland (everyone knows Bboom Bboom and BAAM but recently they haven't been popular), Izone would have probably been at this tier when they were a thing, Oh My Girl (were unknown before Nonstop and Dolphin). Dreamcatcher has a core fanbase but because of their style of music they're not that popular with the average kpop listener.
D tier: CLC (mostly known amongst kpop fans for being under Cube, Apink (they were very big before kpop exploded here), Gfriend (a lot of people here find their style of music unappealing/too jarring, but Mago seemed to be a bit more popular, also doesn't hurt they're under Big Hit now.
Everyone else is less popular than this, at least from what I can tell.
Different poster, but if you want to see opinions from Korea you can look at the gallup 2020 poll. For girl groups it came in with BP (13.6%), Twice (7.8%), RV (4.8%), Mamamoo (4%) and then OMG (3.9%) to round out the top 5. Blackpink (#3), Twice (#5) and Red Velvet (#8) made the overall top 10 musical acts for people aged 13-39. Red Velvet could fall a bit after Irene's controversy, but we'll have to wait until their comeback.
It's a bit hard to gauge some older groups because once you start getting to higher age ranges, the responses have a drastic change towards trot with BTS the only idol group at #10.
Yes, I live in Korea but I went to uni in UK in 2012 (I’m on the older sideㅜㅜ, hence my flair) so I knew the 1D craze. I had my British Youtuber phase back then too god what a time to be alive lmao
We don’t really listen to K-pop that much tbh. Korean music scene is so so broad and K-pop is just a fraction of it. Just look at Melon Chart everyday, you’ll notice only a handful of K-pop groups can now enter the Top 100. Back then during the hey day of Gen 2, it was dominated by K-pop songs, even on Melon yearly chart. Notable huge difference since 2016 onwards, us general public listen to K-pop less and less and I feel like K-pop since then are more marketed directly towards fans with lengths such as V-app, Weverse, company made variety shows, etc.
This is where the Korean and International perspective is a bit different. When mentioning Red Velvet you would think of Bad Boy while I would mention Red Flavour. Mamamoo I would think of Decalcomanie or 별이 빛나는 밤.
Apink has always been popular with their innocent concept. Their debut and My My were well-received, NoNoNo was a massive hit I remember I was sick of hearing it too many times back then, then Mr Chu was also a great follow-up. LUV was huuuuge domestically. Apink hit daebak particularly because back in summer 2012 Eunji starred in revolutionary TvN drama Reply 1997, which was a massive hit (amazing ratings for a cable channel at the time) and was the start of Reply and Wise Life (Hospital Playlist, Prison Playbook) series. Naeun always made buzz because of her visual, she even made Adidas leggings sold out because she wore in dance practice video. She even starred in PSY’s New Face MV. Now PSY only put the “IT GIRLS” on his MVs (Hyuna in Gangnam Style, Gain in Gentlemen). It’s just Red Velvet has more English speaking international fans hence seem to have more online presence/popularity.
Unfortunately groups like Everglow, Loona, CLC, Dreamcater I only know because of Reddit. Never knew they existed and none of my friends even mentioned them. Itzy I only know Dalla Dalla and G-idle with only Latata and recently Hwaa thats about it. Gfriend is BIG. Me Gustas Tu was played everywhere was it summer 2014/2015 (can’t remember the exact year), then Rough was on radio like a lot a lot, pretty sure they reached #1 on Melon.
You have to remember that not every Korean listen to K-pop. There are: Korean general public (like me, whose K-pop knowledge limited to Melon Top 100) > K-pop listener (usually teenagers, people who listen to different K-pop songs, like you) > then actual fanbase of the group (who bother streaming etc).
Lastly, I mentioned Brown Eyed Girls because they released a song recently (2020) so I consider them still “active” whereas the likes of SNSD, T-ara (I would put them S Tier, they are really popular), or EXID (A-Tier) they haven’t released anything for years though have not “officially” disbanded.
NOTE: Please refer to my list above as Korean perspective. I don’t really know much about the international popularity so I can’t really comment regarding that matter. What I said above are facts/information I gained by using Melon everyday and by considering what my friends listen to. Unlike you I don’t consider Youtube views or Billboard Korean chart etc as a measurement for popularity. Just Melon as us the majority of Korean use this music platform. I hope this makes sense and apologies for grammatical mistakes. Feel free to ask me anything! :)
s+ tier blackpink
s tier twice
a+ tier red velvet, mamamoo
a tier apink, izone, gfriend
b+ tier oh my girl, gidle, itzy
b tier wjsn, aespa, lovelyz, april, momoland
c+ tier dreamcatcher, loona, fromis
c tier clc, dia, stayc, weki meki, laboum, weeekly
d+ tier everglow, cherry bullet, rocket punch, elris
d tier cignature, nature, fanatics
this factors in physicals, digitals, length of time in the industry, and public awareness, with an importance stressed on digitals. there are groups with great physical sales who the gp is not aware of, so i would struggle to call them a top group. meanwhile there have been groups with weaker physicals who have managed to be considered a-tier bc their constant digital reign (ie: sistar).
i would say brave girls recently shot up to b-tier level. hopefully they continue to go up. as for the current top 4th gen group, currently i would say its gidle.
iirc, knetz have a nickname for the five top girl groups of 3rd gen, just thought that would be funny to share haha.
honestly depends on what is considered as "popularity" when it comes to rv and mamamoo. both do well in korea and have international fans as well. as for the rest of the groups listed, i'd agree with the comments
thanks! it didnt take long actually, i like answering this sort of question so i generally have an idea of how the placements go.
as for exid and beg are you asking in their prime or currently? currently, i would put them at b+ tier, simply bc even though they dont chart like they used to, they have name brand value. each of the members are fairly well known and they have several noteworthy hits.
speaking of older ggs, sistar has recently discussed coming back and snsd seems to be hinting at it too. aside from the great music, it'll be interesting to see how these two girl group giants perform.
It's a good list, but there's a lot of names missing. Imma try to fit in a few more (no soloists)
S+ tier Blackpink
S Tier Twice
A+ Tier Red Velvet, Mamamoo, formerly IzOne
A Tier Itzy, (G)I-dle, aespa
B+ Tier Oh My Girl, Gfriend, Loona
B Tier Apink, Everglow
C+ Tier WJSN, Dreamcatcher
C Tier Lovelyz, April, CLC, Cherry Bullet
D+ Tier StayC, Cignature, Nature
D Tier groups that are slightly above nugu status or very new but unheard of rookies like Pixy
I have no idea if this is accurate AT ALL lol but it feels right to me ♂️
I may not know a lot about girl groups but I have a feeling WJSN is more popular than Dreamcatcher? Their popularity is very domestic based but I've seen their members get certain opportunities they wouldn't have gotten without decent domestic exposure which is something that Dreamcatcher currently doesn't have. And yeah I'd also have to disagree with aespa being so high.
This is a really confusing discussion either way though because groups like Apink could be argued to have more popularity compared to Loona when you consider pure recognition. Not just of members but also songs. And then discussion of domestic vs. international.
Props to you for doing this list though because I probably would just give up!
No doubt aespa will probably get there, but I don't think they've been around long enough (and certainly haven't released enough) to justify that position quite yet. Black Mamba charted decently but not to the level that Itzy and (G)I-dle's releases have been, not to mention there's no telling what their physicals are gonna look like yet.
honestly, i didnt even consider how these groups perform outside of domestic asia considering most still focus on domestic asian regions for the majority of their promotion.
with that in mind, i considered everglow's physicals & digitals, as well as their current group and individual name value, which led to that ranking.
i definitely feel like aespa will be a more physical inclined group. with their unique concept, i don't see them scoring a digital hit early on. but they definitely have a potentially huge fanbase across the asian region that will support them by buying albums.
it depends on what measurements of popularity. for me popularity is based on digital sales >>>>>>> physical sales >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> western digital/sales >>>>>>> youtube views so my personal ranking probably
S+ tier : blackpink and twice (both have super high physical and digital) have multiple PAKs and easy 400k++ sales, all members have high individual popularity
S tier : red velvet, mamamoo, apink (having high digital sales and physical sales) members have high individual popularity
A tier: gfriend, oh my girl, izone, gidle, itzy (have high digital sales and physical sales but lower compared to S tier group)
B tier: Wjsn, lovelyz, april (before scandal), aespa, momoland (have good/decent digital and good/decent physical) some members known in public
C tier: loona, stayc, dreamcatcher, weki meki ( have good/decent digital and/or good decent physical) 1-2 members known in public.
D tier: fromis 9, clc, everglow, weekly, rocket punch, cherry bullet (low/decent physical and/or low/decent digital) known in kpop community.
E tier: nugu group
notes:
was put apink in a tier but considering their previous hit releases and their last release charted well i put them in s tier.
brave girls now probably in a tier
don't know how to place other hiatus group, exid probably in b tier
group b tier can win against bg with high physical but low digital (though april never won) a tier above can win comfortably against bg.
I’d love to see what groups the people on this sub are into ☺️ for me, it’s Red Velvet, Gfriend, SNSD, KARA, f(x), Apink, Mamamoo, Billlie, & LOONA(along w all the stuff they’re doing now like ARTMS). My 10th(not pictured sadly) would be Purple Kiss(I’ll miss them so much oh my gosh) or ILLIT as I’ve been really obsessed with them both lately.
💓
(Edit: Wrote IVE “TWICE” lol, added Mamamoo to the list)
You have 2 IVEs in there lol, was that intentional? I love your list though!
I messed up and I just noticed it lol.
Ult: Mamamoo
And in no particular order:
- 2NE1
- Red Velvet
- TWICE
- i-dle
- SNSD
- aespa
- Oh My Girl
- GFriend/Viviz
- I couldn't think of a 10th one that I truly follow so... Huntr/x?
❤️🔥 (my ult is mamamoo too🥰)
8/10. We're friends 😁
Oh I LOVE your list so much!! We have very similar taste :) Wonder Girls & fromis_9 are JUST out of my top 10 but they’re really close up there 😄 and I’ve been loving Rescene a lot, one of my favorite 5th gen groups for sure so far. IVE, AOA, & Twice I enjoy too but on a more casual basis ☺️
Aww, thank you so much, it is very kind thing to say. My list mixes into a few different generations of kpop, which I find is really fun about it. Rescene's music is absolutely wonderful and refreshing for the fifth generation for me, and I'm so glad I can match music taste wise truthfully with you and anyone else! 😊

As usual GGs have been dominating the song's charts meanwhile most of the BGs are from BIG 3/4 with only few exceptions....New Jeans and WannaOne had insane debuts , 3rd gen BGs managed to stay in the charts for a solid 8-9 years , BTS with the amazing longevity of 8 years which will keep extending , Map of the soul series was absolute success for them they managed to chart half of the bsides from MOTS:7 and MOTS:Persona!!
I really wonder what happened with TWICE, their popularity in Korea really took a huge hit. Someone mentioned there was a hate train against them in 2020, welp how strong was it that K-Onces just stopped listening to them? They have put a lot of effort in promoting their songs in Korea but the response is just quite meh.
This will be long.
Twice in their golden era of 2016-2019 had 9 No. 1 consecutive songs and 3 consecutive Daesangs. They are also very popular in Japan.
You know K-pop rite? It is a zero-sum game. In order for their favorites to rise must bring down Twice. The "Slave Room" ( an online hate group against Twice by someone who even blackmailed children to join the hate campaign). Then the "More & More" encore.
Then there are Twice transition from debut cute songs to now mature songs. Which is normal since Twice's members are women now. Korean GP prefers young girls so GP support is eroded.
Despite all support for Twice is strong in Japan. The foray into America is successful. 6 consecutive Top 10 places in Billboard Top 200 ( including a 1st with the album "With YOU-th") and 4 consecutive best-selling GG.
This year being the 10th Anniversary. In 2024, Twice achieved the 3rd highest-grossing K-pop tour. 2 Korean album, 1 Japanese album, 2 solo album ( Nayeon and Tzuyu) and 1 sub-unit album (Misamo).
Nayeon, Jeongyeon and Jihyo has their web series. The others brand ambassadors. Being guests in IU's Pallette show. Gone to many variety show during promotion for "Strategy" album. Twice won't give up on Korea.
Don't get me wrong, I know for a fact that their popularity has been very strong in US and Japan, I mean MiSaMo just about sold out Tokyo Dome for 2 days consecutively on their own, that alone speaks volumes. Their "New Look" was much more stable than TWICE Strategy and other music releases in the charts until January end. We had a really good Radio Airplay for Strategy in US, the release during the Month of Christmas kind of brought down their Billboard rankings but the song and the album itself did quite well. The song charted on Apple Music in many countries and even achieved #1 in a good count of them. It's still in top 10 of QQ Music Weekly Charts surprisingly.
But not just during Strategy, it felt like the support from Korea has been quite lack luster, maybe this time it was an English release, maybe the political turmoil tuned out a lot of the general audience, but I feel like this has been going on for a while now and it sucks to see as a ONCE that a group that is so deeply rooted in Korea (had one of the biggest fandoms) and has promoted more than they ever did in US despite having an English release doesn't do as well as other groups. In fact barely chart on Melon anymore which is crazy to me. Were the encore and online hate group so strong that they've had a lasting impact to this day?
Korean GP prefers young girls is prolly right though since BP might be the only other 3rd gen gg I know who are still going strong, and with their comeback this year, it might be attributed more towards their newfound success and a growing audience with their solo album releases.
TWICE transitioning to a different style of songs is understandable, they also prolly feel the need to expand their audience and feel good about stepping out of their comfort zone while other groups barely want to take the risk and I respect that. Their collab with Megan was fire and they definitely have the spark to go for more such collaborations with other artists. Not to forget they'll be the guests for Coldplay's Tour in SK for all 5-6 days? That's going to be amazing. They have a diverse discography and I'm all for it. Of course they won't give up on Korea, but it feels like many of the K-ONCEs and the GA have unfortunately.
I don't think a silly encore stage from the more and more era could be the effect of this.It brought on a huge hate train but it definitely did not affect their popularity.
there was a hate train against them in 2020,
I think it was about their encore? However even after the encore they managed to chart alcohol free in 2021 , most people say it's the concept change that they stopped releasing cute songs which I don't think is true because fancy & feel special are not cute songs but they still charted well even alcohol free charted
Beast/Highlight were so popular until 2014, nowadays kpop fans act like they were a one hit wonder or second-rate group but it wasn't the case, they were genuinely one of the top groups
It's like with every 2nd gen group who weren't from big 3
Kpop kind of struggled in korea towards the end of third gen I think. BTS being the only boy group charting for two years is a sign of that. 4th gen really struggled because of that , especially the boy groups. The burning sun scandal worsened that.
I hope day6 would be included cos they had a stellar year
plave!!!!! my underdog baby <3
Does Hanteo not count previous album sales from past groups? 8.5 million is massive but definitely not the highest I have seen.
Their singles might be a hit or a miss for me, but seeing a group with such clear vision and concept but still somehow managing to evolve their sound and be fresh each comeback is praise-worthy.
IT group with IT girls!
I wouldn't surprised
But doesn't this title belong to IVE?
Its close
Overall - all outlets. IVE has sold the most. Idle 2nd and Aespa 3rd.
Just think of how many more sales they would've had if Dirty Work didn't bomb so hard.

Which means IZ*ONE is in 2nd or 3rd place, look at who's occupying those spaces. If they were active, IZ*ONE would potentially be in 1st place since they were neck to neck with Twice back then in 2020 in album sales.
They could have been top 1-2 if they were still around, such a powerful group and could have easily been one of the biggest 4th gen gg (not like they werent already during their run).
They would have been two i think. Top 2 and 3 have izone members in them.
In spirit, the 2nd and 3rd place are them as both IVE and Le Sserafim have 2 former IZ*ONE members in either.
Hello r/KpopGGs users, since we’ve grown pretty rapidly I wanted to give some friendly reminders about our sub rules
We are a girl group sub! While we understand many of our users are fans of boy groups as well (which is totally okay!), this sub was intentionally created for k-pop girl groups and k-pop female soloists. We don’t want to censor all mention of male idols or groups, but please understand that the focal point of all posts and replies should be girl groups. Assume all discussion posts or questions are inquiring about girl groups specifically, even if not explicitly stated by the poster. A girl group specific subreddit has not existed up until this point, so it’s important for us to stay true to our identity as such. All girl group fandoms are welcome here, and so are those who may be new to girl groups or new to k-pop in general.
With that being said, I can’t believe we’ve already surpassed 3,000 members! I’m so happy with this little community we’ve built and I can’t wait to see where it goes. As always, feel free to reply with suggestions for the mod team or shoot us a modmail:)
I have a question - Can we talk about female idols of co-ed groups?
Yes u can!! Since it's a sub for appreciating female idols too!
i never considered this! i’d say yes
Also there's a similar sub for kpop boy groups r/kpopBGs , though it's less active than this one
yes!! our mod teams aren’t affiliated (anymore at least, the user who made both subs cut ties and deactivated) but it seems like they are doing a great job with their sub
I felt inclined to make this announcement because I’ve had to remove a lot of boy group content from the sub in the past couple of days, I plan on updating the rules to be more specific as soon as possible.
I have one question unrelated to the post but related to the rules, saying you don't like a group and giving your reasons is considered a hate comment?
it really depends. if it’s unnecessarily vitriolic or contains offensive/discriminatory language that will not be tolerated. if a post or comment is also causing too much discourse that it becomes difficult to moderate, than it will be removed or locked under those circumstances as well. is there a specific post or reply you’re referring to?
No, just to give an example if I say I don't X because they did something racist or X because they support this and that, is that banable?
Honestly this was a great idea for a sub, I'm glad this place has grown so quickly!
thank you i’m glad you like it!
Seconding this, it’s been awesome to have a place that’s just for girl groups! I feel like boy group fans dominate a lot of other kpop subs so it’s refreshing just to focus on the girlies 😊
Hi everyone, I'm a new kpop stan (since December) and I like to understand things. For me stats are a great way to see the information. Here is the part 2 of my stats about album sales : Girl Groups version.
Disclaimer 1 : I don't know everything so some information may be wrong, I don't read Korean, so I had to rely on a few English sites to get the numbers. Finally, I only studied the 4/5 biggest groups per generation according to sales.
I also haven add the 2024 sales because the year is not over yet (some groups have not done a comeback yet). Also, I only studied sales of Korean album based on the Hanteo and Circle Charts mostly.
For the productivity : I decided to count only officially released song and only one time each (no matter the number of remixes and different languages version) and I do not count solo songs not release within the group’s official releases.
Disclaimer 2 : I know album sales are not a perfect indicator for popularity. It was just one I use to start because the data are easy to find and rather complete.
Here are my sources : https://kpopping.com/ and https://genius.com/ and https://koreansalestwt.blogspot.com/
List of the groups in my stats :
1st Gen : Baby V.O.X, DIVA, S.E.S and Fin K.L
2nd Gen : 2NE1, Wonder Girls, Girl Generation and Apink
3rd Gen : BlackPink, Twice, Red Velvet, Dreamcatcher, Gfriend, Mamamoo and WJSN
4th Gen : Itzy, NMIXX, Ive, Aespa, New Jeans, Gidle, Le Sserafim
Here is the link to the stats : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1t76ROEL0-_KZmel1tzgpOZvXUsBo_N10/edit?usp=drive_link&ouid=114658307732402964046&rtpof=true&sd=true
And some of my conclusions :
In general 3rd and 4th generation groups out sales 2nd generation groups (none of 2nd gen groups ever sold 500k album). 4th generation groups have a quicker growth in general than previous generations. 1st generation doesn't work with these dynamics as some of the group sold multiples 500k+ albums. However, as those 1st Kpop group they had very little competition.
The groups on the list that have participated in Mnet Queendom (Gidle and Mamamoo) and Queendom 2 (WJSN)have all seen a rise of album sales after.
Being from a Big 4 Agency is not an assurance to a quick success : Twice and Itzy had a progressive growth. In the 3rd generation there is successful groups that are from smaller agencies : Mamamoo (RBW)and Dreamcatcher (Happy Face) but in the 4th generation, the successful groups are all from one of the Big 4 or a subsidiary of one (ADOR).
If you have some question, leave a comment and I’ll try to respond quickly.
I think I'll publish other stats in a week or two if anyone is interested. The possible subjects : Music show wins and awards, concert data, song production (credits). Would anyone be interested ?
DoC ^.^
(G)I-dle being in the most productive category is honestly insane with more than a year of hiatus and them being mostly self-produced. Should have named them NODAYSOFF.
Didn’t IVE get their first music show win in 7 days?
Your disclaimer about 1st gen groups is misleading. The reason their sales were much better is because pirating music on the internet hadn't killed album sales yet. Note that there's like a 7-year gap in your data; that's because labels couldn't figure out how to make groups like MILK and The Grace work in that environment.
Source: JYP himself, in a video every K-pop fan should memorize: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mrm8BjMLnAM
In any case, this is a good example of why comparing numbers across eras can be confusing without appropriate context.
Yeah. It's flawed to compare one generation to another w/o context. The 2nd generation groups look bad compared to the others if you're just looking at album sales. However, their tours were obviously larger than the 1st generation. Piracy was rampant and 2007 and 2008 were the worst years in album sales in Korean history.
K-Pop continued to grow and companies got crafty w/ albums (in other words, making multiple versions of the same album) so the 3rd generation got to benefit from that. At some point in the late 2010s, streaming were counted as album sales so K-Pop acts' album sales were inflated compared to the 2nd generation groups.
True2 i was so mad when people download songs pirating when we have streamings site on Spotify year 2015 🤣 end up buying albums
Been looking forward to this post about GG since the first post about BG. Yes I also want data about music show wins and concert data.
Wait I'm confused, you said in 4th gen successful groups are Big 4, but IVE from Starship are in top3 for all girlgroups? Also very cool stats and I'd be interested in other areas
