Differences Between the Naruto Manga and Anime

TL;DR The Naruto anime differs from its manga counterpart primarily due to added filler content, changes in character development, and alterations for pacing and censorship. The anime often expands on the manga's storyline but can sometimes contradict or alter key elements.

Adaptation Choices

Anime adaptations often make changes based on studio decisions to enhance storytelling or fit the format better. For instance, Studio Pierrot made choices that affected character portrayals, such as amplifying Sakura's negative traits [1:1]. These changes are not unique to Naruto; many anime adaptations diverge from their manga sources [1:2].

Character Development and Pacing

A significant difference between the manga and anime is the approach to character development. While the manga focuses more on plot progression and action, the anime includes additional character bonding arcs and training sequences [2:2]. This often results in a slower pace in the anime due to filler episodes designed to expand the universe [3:3].

Censorship and Artistic Expression

The manga offers uncensored art and faster pacing compared to the anime, which may censor certain scenes for broadcast standards [4:1]. Fans of the manga appreciate the original artwork and storytelling style, while the anime provides voice acting, music, and extended fight scenes [5:1].

Filler Content

The anime includes filler content that is not present in the manga, which can lead to contradictions with the source material. Some fans enjoy these fillers for entertainment value, while others find them detracting from the main story [3:2][5:10]. Boruto, in particular, has been criticized for excessive filler [5:2].

Canon vs. Non-Canon Elements

There are debates about what constitutes canon within the Naruto universe. Some argue that anime-only content should be considered filler, while others view it as an extension of the manga [3:5][5:5]. The anime occasionally introduces new characters or alters existing ones, leading to discrepancies between the two mediums [3:8].

ORIGINAL POST

I'm not a fan of manga or comic books. I've just never been a fan, so I just assumed that mangas would be 1 to 1 with the animes.

No.

What the fuck.

There are so many god damn things in the manga that were changed or even completely REMOVED that affected the whole god damn show.

Plenty of moments with Sakura and Sasuke are glossed over, and honestly in general it seems like the anime treated Sakura even WORSE than the manga. She's not even that useless in the manga.

If I wasn't subbed here, I'd be forever convinced of things that are just... not true. The fuck is up with animes not being accurate to the lore?

The confusion wouldn't happen if people just stuck to what Kishimoto himself wrote and illustrated.

This isn't unique to Naruto by the way, many animes with mangas the source story change things or are outright different.

100000000% I agree. To be fair, I do think animating already drawn characters is be easier than trying to create a character that people can all agree on from words.

In manga the characters are already drawn so everyone has that picture of them. When you're adapting a book, everyone has their own picture of what stuff looks like.

Duck_Person1 · 2 months ago

I think the main reason is that anime adaptations aren't afraid to have voice acted thoughts. I think there's just a culture of adapting faithfully in Japan though because they don't even try half the time in America.

Certain writing decisions work better in manga format but the true answer is Studio Pierott has some opinions as to how to improve the story and they make those choices. Sometimes it works well like Shikamaru grieving for Asuma's death, sometimes it doesn't like Sakura's increased hesitancy to destroy Obito's Rinnegan, and on occasion they meant well but made an assumption that's going to come back to bite them later like Kurama's death scene.

As for Sakura, every character has their negative traits amplified but it's more noticeable in her case because she gets vastly more screentime than most other characters in the series.

What assumption did that make with kurama death scene that will bite them later?

1 upvotes on reddit
S
superkami64 · 2 months ago

The studio assumed the Boruto manga undersold his death scene and that it had wasted potential to really hit the emotional beats it could've. The anime adaptation gave it as heartbreaking of a separation from Naruto as possible but what they hadn't considered was the manga underselling the moment on purpose due to what it had planned for the story so now the anime did too good of a job with the scene.

It did this with bleach too, there’s an endgame ship that happens that people think came out of nowhere because the anime studio decided to push a different ship that was never gonna happen

yes the manga is better than the anime imo

manga gets straight into the action shows battles , new important characters & no filler arcs but it also doesn’t show a lot of character development besides a few moments

Anime is good if you like seeing character bonding arcs and training plus it feels like mystery when you see new characters and you get to learn their background stuff like that

I read/watch both to get the best of both worlds

Why does the anime make seemingly significant changes to the manga storyline

Posted by creepwav3 · in r/Boruto · 4 months ago

so I watched Naruto years ago when it came out, I remember waiting weekly for the episodes to release … I never read the manga tho

Recently I decided to start Boruto … personally I’m hooked but I got to like episode 100 and couldn’t wait for the story progress. The fillers are crazy long, and I kept seeing spoilers that I was excited for so I started the NNG manga from volume 4 I discovered that Mitsuki drops the Orochimaru bomb in volume 4 but this is discussed and worked into anime canon from super early on and continued through multiple storylines way before Vol 4.

Does this happen often with the manga to anime … does it ever compromise the storyline?

They do this because they think they know better than the actual authors of the plot.

And because they need fillers.

And ohhh boy... if they then do stupid things.

Other changes include:

-Sasuke telling Boruto to keep his headband at the end of the movie arc... fast foward to >!Isshiki invading Konoha, and you have Sasuke giving his headband to Boruto again!<. The anime >!just adapts this scene fully with no change, taking the L!<.

-Sarada >!NEVER getting the 3T by the time of the Boro fight!<.

...

And, big time, after the Kawaki arc:

-In the manga you have: >!Team 7 being put on hold and never doing missions, Kawaki becoming a ninja trainee at best and remaining a loner at worst, and Isshiki instructing Code on what to do next!<.

-In the anime instead, you have: >!Team 7 being put on hold for 5 minutes at most, Kawaki becoming a Genin and skipping literally every step to it all while making friends with filler kids, and Isshiki's speech to Code being cut in half because reasons...!<.

All of this is made especially stupid because the anime doesn't even elaborate on these changes... there is no narrative, no use...

As examplefied by what the anime did to a certain scene from the manga:

-In the manga: >!Boruto gifts his headband to Kawaki as a lucky charm to give back once he becomes a proper Ninja!<.

-In the anime: >!Kawaki is already a genin and has a filler headband which he conveniently loses during a spar, and gives absolutely no fook about it!<. >!Boruto gets anxious and scared to be punished for accidentally breaking an headband during a spar, and gives his headband to Kawaki because of this (instead of just... you know, getting a new one for a fellow GENIN, from wherever they are stored), and there is no narrative about it being a lucky charm that is to be given back in the future!<.

...

And here's another dumb change:

In the anime: >!there is this second chunin exam after Isshiki, where Sarada becomes a Chunin and even replaces Konohamaru as the team leader of Team 7!<.

GOOD LUCK integrating that with; >!the homestay mission with Eida and Daemon, where Konohamaru is present as the leader of Team 7 !<; or with >!the timeskip, where Sarada is openly called a Genin by Shikamaru!<.

...

People who insist these things are "anime canon", and somehow are important and "improve" the plot... are just illuding themselves.

Agreed. I've been saying for a long time, people who say that "anime cannon" is anything more than filler are in my opinion just delusional. Some filler are entertaining like deepa arc, but that's as far as it goes, It often contradicts the manga and some scenes are completely removed or changed.

This isn't an "opinion"... but a fact.

Of course, regarding those people that actively chose to insist on this while they should know better.

>Some filler are entertaining like deepa arc, but that's as far as it goes, It often contradicts the manga and some scenes are completely removed or changed.

Indeed.

And many people are too ignorant to realize that... no matter what bs the anime writers decided to make.

All I know for sure, is that with the anime being the adaptation of the manga, thus being inherently tied to it and following its story... any huge change is always dumb.

And them auto retconning themselves to undo certain changes (that they could have avoided doing in the first place), will never not be hilarious.

Because the manga moves so dang slow that the anime had to just fill time with random stuff and make it make sense. This is why I really hope when the anime eventually returns it just does a 12-24 episode season like every other anime these day

In general, the Anime is supposed to expand and explore Manga's materials that the Manga itself couldn't do due to its limitation and the Anime has done some of that. Since you're early in Boruto Anime when you read the Manga you'll soon see that the Manga will reference some Anime moments and there will be Anime-original characters that will be introduced later in the Manga.

That being said, the Anime itself isn't without its own flaws as it has, on several occasions, contradicted the Manga's representations so some of its contents need to be taken with a grain of salt.

Sarada now has the MS and is still a genin in the manga and she awakened her MS at the end of part 1, while in the anime she still only has two fucking Tomoe, not to mention she already had 3 tomoe when she fought Boro in the manga.

They are going to have to bend backwards to try and pull this shit off.

Question to those who have read the manga

Hello guys I’ve watched the Naruto anime up until shippuden. I have a lot of downtime at work and I was thinking of picking up the manga set. Is it worth reading the manga? Are there big differences between the anime and the manga? I would like to get your opinions before I drop $170 for a manga set. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thank you

Well firstly you don't need to drop 170$ dollars. You could just read it on your phone or at your local library(I read the series during high school. And reread it on my phone).

There are not massive differences between both beyond some facial expressions and pacing. If you watched the anime, your buying the PHYSICAL Manga as a fan to support the series or because your a collector.

Main differences in the Manga are seeing the art in it's original form(which I consider way better), improved pacing, and significantly reduced censorship. Kakashi's full hand goes through Haku, instead of stopping at his chest. Stuff like that.

Of course you lose out on the voice acting, music, extended fights, etc of the anime.

Also $170 is unnecessary unless you really want to collect the physical manga. If you sign up for a Shonen Jump subscription you can read on your phone or in your browser. It's $4 USD a month.

I fully recommend reading the manga.

There any differences between the manga/ anime?

Posted by ShawnLikesMetal · in r/Naruto · 5 years ago

[Disclaimer] I've never actually read the manga.

  • Does the anime do things better? Besides of course being able to hear voices/ music and such and of course animating battle scenes.

  • But did the anime ever change things up, or add some spice here and there? Or remove/ add dialogue or maybe jutsus or even side characters?

  • Was there things you wish the Anime added to the series that Only the manga had? (Vise Versa)

  • For the Boruto series I heard boruto is more fillers/ non cannon while the managa focuses only on cannon and the makn story. Wasn't sure if it was the same for the Naruto series.

  • did the anime make any characters look different?

I'm not sure if there is a manga book per episode or if it's one of those thing like 1 manga book will cover like 10 or 15 episodes type of thing. Lol

I wasnt to haooy with the last 2 or 3 Boruto episodes released. In fact i was pissed. After 4 month of quarantine i was like... this is what we get? Watered down dora the expolorer! Naruto had some bad filler/ non cannon but boruto! Oh my god all of boruto filler is beyond horrible. Its half ass'd and so corny and hilarious. The only filler in boruto i enjoyed was the prison filler ark (especially since there was that naruto blood prison movie). And then when Boruto has to watch over the spoiled little rich kid boy who is obssessed with Ninja cards. Turns out he could do jutsus and throw shuriken. I fucking Love that little ark. I sure hope they bring that little kid back. Even in Naruto i always wanted them to bring the Crystal style user Guren back soooo bad!

  • in my opinion, no. I first experienced naruto through the manga, loved it, and tried to pick up the anime after, but it did not vibe at all with me. the pacing really threw me off and all in all the art and effort put into the manga makes it an instant win for me.

  • yeah it adds a few extra lines of dialogue here or there sometimes (or an extra animated scene, you know) but it doesn’t really deviate from the source material in a way that’s noticeable from what I’ve seen.

  • I don’t recall there being anything from the manga that wasn’t in the anime, other than censorship. I think the kakashi anbu arc would have been cool to see canonized in the manga. adds more to his character along with some others.

  • everything in boruto is canon. the manga tends to be more serious though and most of the anime feels more of a slice of life. Naruto has fillers like most shonen series but you can find lists that tell you where to skip so you can keep up with the canon material only.

  • Yes. Well, mostly in terms of color palettes but if you’re reading the manga you won’t notice aside from when you see the covers. some noticeable things are the anime changing naruto’s pale blonde hair and light blue eyes to a highlighter yellow and dark blue in the anime. Ino’s color palette also got changed up quite a bit (in the manga she has dirty blonde/orangish hair with green eyes, in contrast to her pale blonde hair and blue eyes in the anime.) along with a handful of other characters.

hope this helped some!

Manga Pros:
- Much lower time commitment as you can read multiple chapters in the time it takes to watch an episode
- Much greater variety of content as a shocking amount of manga never gets animated, especially in niche genres like scifi and horror if you're into those like me.
- Not censored as much

Manga Cons:
- No music, and sometimes anime music is killer
- Not as beautiful as anime can be
- Sometimes filler arcs and movies can be great.

I say yes, especially for manga that hasn't been adapted.

The best thing about manga is that it leaves more room for imagination so you can select how the characters sound, their mannerisms, the pace of interactions and battles, etc. yourself to form your perfect version of Naruto.

For example, when I read the manga, I imagine that Lee moved much faster in his fight against Gaara than what the anime shows. Makes the fight more epic (because I like Lee) and more enjoyable for me.

Wtf did Studio Pierrot have against Sakura? Like she isn't great in the manga, but they went out of their way to butcher her in the anime.

I don't think she blocked it, she tackled Naruto to the ground to save him, but the anime changed it so that Naruto just dodged for some reason. The anime also really exaggerated Sakura's temper which I think really contributed to the hate around her character

Because the studio has a weird vendetta against her. Similar to how Danmachi has a real focus on Hestia in the anime, but not near as much in the light novel. Studios man.

The scene where Obito asks Sakura to stab the rinnegan is in both the manga and anime but in the anime they dragged that scene out. Probably to make Sakura look bad 😂

In canon, in the manga, she had more than enough time to stab the eye out.

Read from point 3.

This one's from vol 13. Yeah in this one his hair is sorta reddish but it leaned more to brown.

And I think most colored panels we see on the internet are very good fan recolors

Shikamaru smokes after Asuma's death in the manga

More grotesque details that is censored in the anime (few examples are Kimimaro's flesh wounds if he pulls out a bone or Gato's death by Zabuza)

In the written Chunin exams, Sakura laughs at Naruto when he panics in the anime but in the manga she panicks as well and show genuine concern when she saw Naruto panicking

Minor color details (Rasengan is yellow, Gaara's hair is brown, etc.)

Kishi always wanted each character to have their own chakra color but the anime simplified things allot and so rasengan was turned blue. They “corrected” it in The Last

Never read the manga so that makes sense now, I was confused that rasengan was yellow in the last

The color of Naruto's Chakra being yellow may seem like a minor detail but I've always seen it as pretty significant symbolism when it comes to his relationship with Kurama.

Once they start working together in the later stages of the series, Naruto's Nine Tails forms go from being red to yellow. Kurama himself develops a yellow chakra cloak around himself. It goes from a chakra that's described as burning to Naruto's (which Karin has described as "warm").

Without knowing that, I thought it was pretty random that Naruto suddenly starts glowing yellow in the last few stages of the series.

It's better in the sense that, like every manga with an anime that follows it, it is way ahead in terms of story... and the drawings tend to be better drawn in terms of character design, and paneling too at times.

Of course, that's not to say that it is flawless, but neither that the anime is inherently better...

Both kinds of medias are different, which means they have both their own pros (main plot and being ahead; possibility to make moments 100% more emotional thanks to more time available in both screentime, and terms of planning) and cons (lack of screentime for certain characters; pointless retcons and fillers)...

What is important, is to not be a rude jackass just cause people do not 100% like what you like...

It’s really subjective so I would recommend to try both

So the boruto manga focuses on the main plot of boruto and everything surrounding it mostly

the boruto anime adapts the manga it also has arcs that’s explore the boruto world and characters more than the manga but the arcs usually don’t affect the overall plot of boruto that the manga produces

So in the anime we don't get to see everything about the manga, but more about side characters and boring sh*t?

-6 upvotes on reddit
cypher2448 · 3 years ago

No the anime adapts the manga but it also has arcs that focuses on other characters and explore the boruto world but these arc don’t effect the overall plot of boruto that much

But there’s also arcs like the hozuki castle arc which expands on the manga arc directly after it

Filler is inescapable with this animes formatting, the fact that it’s weekly and not seasonal like other new gen sadly

If Boruto was seasonal it would get trashed even more xD Manga only cares about a couple characters, no world development, no side character development, everyone and their mothers would trash it for having so much protentional due to having such a big world with a lot of story and not using it.

That’s the only reason we have so many fillers. Monthly manga, 12 chapters a year. What do you exactly want them to do? Develop a story out of their arse?

A solution would be going seasonal and animate only the manga chapters, I guess.

At this point I feel like the show makes Bleach look weak in filler content. How much of this show is even manga canon?

4 upvotes on reddit
Primetime349 · 3 years ago

Good amount of reasons.

  1. Pacing. There aren’t any long drawn out moments where you stare at the anime for a couple seconds before they move on. You can generally get the feeling of what they are trying to convey in a frame and move to the next much faster. And there’s usually none to very little filler. Pacing is somewhat tricky to advocate for in Boruto manga tho, because they only release monthly rather than the traditional weekly. I will say though, this allows for much better quality. While it would take a long amount of time to watch the show and catch up to the Ishikki fight, I was able to read the manga and catch up within a week.

  2. Original art as intended by the mangaka. Rather than seeing an animation studio’s spin on the art, it’s coming directly from the original source in the author. Not sure if this is uniform, but Oda (the author of One Piece) said he doesn’t really have much control on what the anime studio puts out. I also will say Ikemoto is one of my absolute favorite mangakas. He had a very unique and realistic way of drawing the characters.

  3. In specific to boruto, the anime feels somewhat “childish” while the manga feels very mature. If you enjoy the less serious style in the anime, that’s great. But i personally prefer the manga style.

  4. None of the anime canon or anime filler is present, which in my opinion, really really hurts the reputation of the anime series. For example, Iron man Denki is not a character in the manga from my memory. And the anime in general provides a lot of story that isn’t that important to the main arcs going on in the manga.

That being said - Baryon mode in the anime was super cool to watch animated.

In the gato arc they also censored when he was crucified. They showed it but had drawn his arms by his sides since it was on Cartoon Network/toonami at the time.

Also heavy damaged image of p1 Sakura as a character with respect to her behavior towards Naruto. Cant find the panels right now, will try to dig em up later, but in short they made her insanely more obnoxious, mean and borderline bully-like towards Naruto in anime, whereas things are MUCH different in manga. For example, she scolds Sasuke for treating fake Naruto badly (the Orochimaru clone) - this also happened in anime but in a very different way.

differences between manga and anime adaptations

Why is the Naruto manga so different from the anime

Key Considerations:

  1. Filler Episodes: The anime adaptation of Naruto includes a significant amount of filler content that is not present in the manga. This was done to allow the manga to progress further ahead of the anime, leading to extended story arcs that can deviate from the original plot.

  2. Pacing and Storytelling: The pacing in the anime can be slower due to the inclusion of filler and extended fight scenes. The manga tends to have a more concise storytelling style, focusing on the main plot without additional subplots.

  3. Character Development: Some characters may receive different levels of development or backstory in the anime compared to the manga. The anime sometimes expands on character relationships and motivations that are less detailed in the manga.

  4. Art Style and Animation: The art style can vary between the two mediums. The manga has a distinct black-and-white art style, while the anime features color and animation, which can change the perception of certain scenes and characters.

  5. Adaptation Choices: The anime may alter certain scenes or dialogue for various reasons, including pacing, audience engagement, or to fit the episodic format. This can lead to differences in character interactions and plot points.

Takeaway: While both the manga and anime tell the story of Naruto, they do so in different ways. If you prefer a more streamlined and original narrative, the manga is the way to go. If you enjoy character exploration and additional content, the anime provides that experience, albeit with some deviations from the source material.
