TL;DR
USB-C Charging Mod
One of the most popular hardware upgrades for the 3DS is the USB-C charging port modification. Many users find this mod to be a game changer as it eliminates the need for carrying a separate charger [2:1],
[5:1]. Giltesa's Shop offers kits for this mod, praised for their customer service and quick shipping
[2:1]. While some users opt to DIY, others prefer sending their device to professionals for installation
[4:1].
Battery Upgrades
Upgrading the battery can extend the playtime of your 3DS, but it's important to be cautious with aftermarket options. Some batteries claim extended life but may not deliver significantly better performance than the original Nintendo OEM battery [4:1]. It's advisable to read reviews and verify seller credibility before purchasing.
C-Stick and Joystick Mods
Replacing the C-stick is another common upgrade. Users have swapped the original rubber nub with alternatives like those from Lenovo ThinkPads or PSP sticks, which offer improved feel and usability [2:2],
[5:1]. These mods can enhance gaming experience, especially for those who find the stock stick uncomfortable.
Speaker and Button Upgrades
While speaker upgrades aren't commonly pursued, there is interest in improving audio quality. However, no significant community consensus or guides exist for speaker modifications [5:1]. Button swaps are more prevalent on older DS models rather than the 3DS, as the latter's buttons generally perform well
[5:1].
Additional Mods
Some users have installed Bluetooth chips for wireless audio capabilities [4:2]. Software modding is also recommended for unlocking additional features and enhancing user experience
[4:3]. For stylus replacements, mechanical pencils or aftermarket pens can serve as alternatives
[4:4],
[4:10].
When considering hardware upgrades, ensure compatibility and assess whether the mod will genuinely improve your gaming experience.
Did you upgrade the screens? I kind of wanted to do that on mine but honestly a bit scared to
I was kinda skeptical, too. But it's not that hard at all.. I just torqued the 2DS this morning.. Screens are oem. Lite is a reshell from a broken hinged all black.. The screens were still good.
What is your kernel ?
Wood R4 V1.61
What's going on here?
I would really appreciate some suggestions on how to refurbish and future proof my new n3ds 2015 (not XL).
Main problems: The lower casing is busted around the screw, it still opens but the nub is glued in and there’s no screw below it.
The upper screen has some scratches that are barely visible here, and there’s a crack across the screen below the plastic layer (I think?).
Other stuff: Neither screen is IPS. The battery is pretty bad, is a usbc mod worth it?
I originally bought it for 40€ in 2019 so I’m okay with spending a bit more on hardware upgrades :)
Whoa, what is that C Stick? Looks 3D printed?
I have the Lenovo nub on mine... hate the color but it works well.
It’s a replacement stick for a psp, it’s a bit big on the non-XL model but it feels way nicer than the rubber
I found the usbc mod to be a game changer for me. No more future-proof worries or having to carry around a separate power adapter or converter cable. Made my 3ds way more viable for longer trips.
I'd recommend Giltesa's Shop for usbc mod kits - quick international post-out and EXCELLENT customer service.
Interesting, how was the install process? I've considered doing something like this but the videos I could find were a little intimidating. That was for a more DIY approach though, this looks more slick.
That’s perfect, thank you so much!
That’s a beautiful piece
Thank you! I didn’t love the white at first but the red plates really bring it together
I just watched this video and I gotta say, this was a bit impressive how far he went upgrading the hardware. One thing that came to mind was that he didn't know about accessing the test points around the CPU for audio output, but I think his solution turned out to be fine since he incorporated one switch to handle two distinct functions (trick the 3DS into thinking wired headphones are plugged in, and activating Bluetooth pairing mode.)
I was expecting to see a video capture card added in, however he didn't do this at all. Missed opportunity there, I say. Some other missed opportunities are rerouting the SD card reader (since all of his mods really get in the way of accessing the microSD card), and boosting the volume of the internal speakers and/or upgrading them to higher quality and better sounding ones.
Doubling the battery was awesome to see working. Nice job there.
man I wish I knew how to solder just for that USB C mod alone....
Check out r/3dsmods! We have a lot of guides for it!
Isn’t that where we are right now?
Buy a cheap solder kit, find some dead free PC parts or boards and just start trying!
He really confused me at the beginning when he said DS but then started with a N3DSXL (his old title also said DS).
Yeah, I was irked by him calling his 3DS a DS a couple times in the video, even though he went through the trouble of distinguishing all the models early in the video. Like... what? Lol
I like his solution for the backplate! But definitely missed opportunity for all the mods you suggested, and i think he should have kept the original charging & installed a seperate USBC slot to save himself some work on the new dock. No capture card was a weird choice but I think he's relatively new to 3DSs, so he probably didn't even think about it.
Hello! I recently got my hands on my first 3DS ever and it's been a blast so far but I wanted to upgrade some of its hardware:
I'm open to any suggestions!
edit: I also need a pen because my 3DS XL came without one
Hi there! My friend just installed a bluetooth chip into his 2DS XL, should be around the same for 3DS XL, you might not even need to remove the game cartridge, as the 3DS XL has a bigger housing. Cheers.
Thanks! definitely will follow his steps after my vacation!
while you're at it, software mod it
first thing I did once I got it lol
I use a mechanical pencil for a stylus.
You should be able to find a pen online, even Amazon has them.
yeah there are many bad ones tho I wanted to make sure I got a good one
don't worry about that, i have a cheap one and it works well
What, like cheaply made? /genq
You can find some pretty good battery deals online that claim “ExTRa 3Ds bATtErY liFe” but they’re all scams. I found one good one, but it only averages about 1 hour more than the OG Nintendo OEM battery does, so it’s not a COMPLETE scam, but still be careful with those Amazon sellers.
You can send it to somebody to mod it with a USB-C port for like $100 from what I’ve heard. Not sure how much I trust somebody else with my system, though. Plus, the OG Nintendo 3DS port isn’t THAT bad. I would prefer USB-C, but I personally wouldn’t try it, it just doesn’t seem as rewarding as it should be for the heavy price tag and having to ship my system in the mail to some random modding guy.
YES I NEED A BLUETOOTH CHIP IN MY 3DS TOO I HATE THE DAMN HEADPHONE JACK SOOOO MUCH. I’m not so sure where you could get a hardware mod like that, though, as I haven’t heard much about it online anywhere for that matter. As to how much that would cost, it could be even pricier than the USB-C mod you’re looking for. Also, you would need CUSTOM-CFW to enable and test things like that on a 3DS system. Good question, though!
What I'm specifically talking about is perhaps upgraded speakers, joystick, buttons, etc. I'm used to customizing a fightstick so I wasn't sure if the 3DS had something similar where you could get upgrades for the various parts that perform better than stock.
I did a usb c mod for charging cause I hate the original charger.
I know people do stick swaps on the c stick. You can get the nub from a think pad and it supposedly is a lot nicer to use than the stock stick.
No one touches the speakers as far as I know
Buttons generally don’t need any changes on the 3ds (people do button swaps on the original DS tho)
Depends on if you care about the upgraded features the newer models brought to the table. If you want a c stick or better 3d or potentially ips screens or things like that, go for it. Imo, the only reason not to upgrade is price. I’d try to snag on at GameStop on the rare occasions they’re in stock for $160.
Ok thanks, what are the upgraded features on the new 3ds xl?
You didn’t read what he wrote did you .
Better 3d, a c stick (most games don’t even need it), some come with IPS screens, but I suggest you not go down that rabbit hole. Faster loading, sexy exterior. That’s all. Back when it was 200 new, that was pretty worth it, but now you’re lucky if you can get a dinged up one for that price. The good news is that, if you magically get one for 150-200, you should be able to break even by selling your old console for the same price (if you want to).
As someone who soft-restarts Pokémon a lot to catch one’s with good natures, the faster processing power was all the reason I needed back when I had one. It made such a big difference.
Only a few games use the c-stick.
Hello, recently I bought a used n3DSxl for relatively cheap because of major aesthetic damage. I’m looking to heavily mod this device to suit my wants and I figured I’d ask a bunch of questions in one go:
1.5. Are there and STL files that I could 3D print that would serve me better than what can be bought on Ali express?
Are there any mods to make the buttons not feel so loose? Would the buttons that come with said housing fix this issue?
Is the USBc mod easy enough to do for a guy that hasn’t touched a soldering Iron since highschool (2019)
Since the system will already be taken apart, is there anywhere I can buy a higher quality top screen replacement? Mine works just fine but I was wondering if anyone has made compatible screens with higher resolutions.
AliExpress cases are hit or miss. Best bet is to hunt down cases from broken consoles on eBay, maybe a spacer for the usb c mod so it covers part of the hole that will remain from when you go to file the case, get a practice board and flux and practice first. Build confidence then mod. There’s no screens with higher resolution on the 3ds that work on it. You could try hunting down an ips screen for marginally better color contrasts. One mod I do recommend is the Lenovo laptop nub replacement.
I've just discovered some ROM hacks of new super mario bros so I decided to pick up my original 3DS to play some games on but I'm getting horrible flashbacks of hand cramps whilst playing this thing.
I don't know if it's just me but it seems like the buttons on the 3DS are inferior to the original DS/DS Lite in every way. The buttons are half the length, are way more difficult to press down hardly feel tactile at all and the Dpad is the same, makes my thumbs hurt like hell trying to do precision jumps on mario bros.
But I swapped over to my DS Lite and felt like it was so much more comfortable, the buttons are longer, I can press them with different parts of my thumbs, the shoulder buttons are clicky, the whole things just feels so much more responsive.
Do the new 3DS consoles have better buttons? Or do I just have weird hands?
Has anyone done any modifications to makes things more comfortable?
I saw someone put a PS Vita stick on their 3ds to replace the C-stick nipple, unfortunately I don't remember where I saw it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYN9XWngRds
That's the video I used to do the 3DS to PSP C-stick nub mod on two of my systems. That won't help OP since they mentioned an O3DS as it doesn't have a C-stick.
As for the whole 3DS system: It's too thin for me. I must use a grip to be able to play for more than 5-10 minutes or else I start getting wicked hand cramps and I can pop my wrist out of place just from the force of gripping the plain device. Unfortunately, the grips that I use have had most of them skyrocket in price all over the place as they're getting rare for the N3DS and N3DSXL.
For the O3DS, a smol 3DS Circle Pad Pro a review video here might help a little bit to give the system some bulk and will add in the C-stick and ZL ZR button support in certain games. The only issue is that it bulks out the right side of the console somewhat so you have to stretch your right thumb more to get to the ABXY face buttons.
I'm wondering has anyone tried to mod a 2ds xl to ips screens?
The 3ds grips are good enough for me. I have one for all of my systems. The cheap $10 ones work fine, and the $20 one for the n3ds XL is highly rated. The Hori Monster Hunter grips are pretty nice too, but go for $30+ each.
The Dpad still kind of sucks depending on the unit, though.
Can you make a recommendation for the new 3ds (regular size)?
This is the only plastic one I am aware of that is still easily obtainable for the n3ds (non-XL): Amazon Link
I think it feels great, but as other reviewers mentioned, it blocks the cartridge slot and can be a tight fit for some. It also makes the power button even harder to press.
I second this. I have a cheap handgrip for my 2dsxl and it makes the console so much comfier to use.
The new 3DS models definitely have better buttons than the original, especially the d-pads, and it sounds like an XL model would be better than you. That said, they're still not the best-feeling buttons Nintendo's ever made (for me, that still goes to the original DS Phat), but it's much better than OG 3DS.
the dpad is better on the n3ds models, but I prefer the face buttons of the O2DS
That's good to know! I too love Phat DS's buttons, switching from the phat to the lite was a nightmare for me trying to turbo boost on mario kart!
Ive seen some 3DS grips you can buy online to make it feel like a conventional console controller, could help it feel more comfortable?
I got one of those grips and it completely changed my appreciation for the 3DS. I have XL hands and even the 3ds xl felt too small in my hands to the point where playing action games was always tough for me. After getting a grip I could play for much longer without pain
Nice, almost looks like it could be an oem design
Thanks!
NIce!
It is back from the dead, runs without the camera, just had to attach the display connectors properly
Great! I'm happy for you!
That IS good news!
3ds hardware upgrades
Key Considerations for 3DS Hardware Upgrades
New 3DS vs. Old 3DS: If you have an original 3DS or 3DS XL, consider upgrading to the New 3DS or New 3DS XL. The New models have improved processing power, better 3D effects, and additional features like customizable faceplates.
MicroSD Card Upgrade: Upgrading your microSD card can significantly increase storage for games and downloadable content. Look for a high-capacity (up to 256GB) and high-speed card (Class 10 or UHS-I) for optimal performance.
Battery Replacement: If your 3DS battery life is diminishing, consider replacing the battery with a higher-capacity option. This can extend your playtime between charges.
Screen Protection: Investing in a quality screen protector can prevent scratches and damage to your 3DS screens, preserving the display quality over time.
Custom Firmware (CFW): If you're comfortable with it, installing custom firmware can unlock additional features, such as enhanced homebrew capabilities and the ability to play games from an SD card. Be cautious, as this can void warranties and may lead to bans from online services.
Recommendation: If you're looking for a significant upgrade, the New Nintendo 3DS XL is a great choice due to its enhanced performance and features. For storage, a 128GB microSD card is usually sufficient for most users, providing ample space for games and apps. Always ensure to back up your data before making any upgrades or modifications.
