Faceplates and Skins
One of the most popular ways to customize a 3DS is through faceplates and skins. There are many third-party options available, and some users even opt to create their own designs by printing on vinyl and applying it to blank faceplates [1:1]. Etsy offers custom plates where you can send an image and have it printed on the plates
[1:5]. For those with a New 3DS, swapping out cover plates is another option, with both first-party and aftermarket choices available
[2:3].
Stickers and Charms
Adding stickers and charms is a simple yet effective way to personalize your 3DS. Stickers can be placed behind transparent cases without adhering them directly to the device, allowing for easy swaps when you want a change [4:1]. Charms can also add a unique touch, with stores like DisneyKiss on Alibaba offering various options
[4:2].
Button Swapping
For those willing to open up their 3DS, button swapping can provide a fresh look. This involves ordering buttons in different colors and replacing the existing ones, which can make your device stand out [3:1]. It's a more involved process but can be rewarding for those who enjoy hands-on customization.
Ergonomic Grips
Adding a grip to your 3DS can improve comfort, especially during extended gameplay sessions. Some grips come with handles and offer better ergonomics, particularly when using the D-pad heavily [3:2]. Ensure the grip allows access to the stylus or has a clip for easier access
[3:5].
Internal Mods
Advanced users might consider internal mods like adding Bluetooth, USB-C, or wireless charging capabilities. These modifications require technical expertise but can enhance the functionality of your 3DS [3:4]. For those interested in software customization, joining communities like the Nintendo Homebrew Discord can provide guidance on installing custom themes and games
[5:1].
These tips provide a range of options from simple cosmetic changes to more complex modifications, catering to various levels of customization enthusiasts.
i just put some stickers on mine and got a custom theme from themeplaza, you can also get cool third-party plates!!
lots of third party new 3ds plates available, first party too though they're pricier
This! I bought 3-4 aftermarket plates that rotate when I'm bored and this has been pretty great so far
I remember seeing an Etsy listing for custom plates, like you'd send them an image and they'd print it on the plates. Very interesting idea, the ability to put anything I want on them gives me choice anxiety
stickers and a charm!
Sometimes leaving it undecorated is an artform itself.
Luckily this model of the 3DS is the best for customization 🤠
I would scope out faceplates, first and third party, or even an option most people forget about- making your own! I bought a ton of cheap blank faceplates and printed designs on vinyl that I stuck on (I even have a few of these diy plates with first party designs because I’m not paying that much in this economy)
A lot of others also suggested stickers but I’ll add in that I usually don’t actually remove the backing and adhere stickers to the plate (I accidentally ruined a plate that way and the residue just will not come off no matter what at this point), so go for some painters tape to stick things down, and/or get a clear case to use that pressure to keep the stickers in place
Cosmetically or internally, what sort of quirks and additions have you all made to your console? Personally, I've kept my shell bone stock for now, but i'm interested to hear about what you've all done :)
I’m getting a custom decal girl skin for my 2ds
the black N3DS with the ORAS translucent cover plates
I upgraded to the New XL with purple galaxy colors - other than that it’s all internal stuff like wallpapers and badges from the badge arcade thing
I am broke so i only have old 3ds with nothing but the scrathces on it.
But i still enjoy it
Since you had to ask, I’d not recommend painting your 3DS :)
Ive added a grip (with handles) on my 3DS. Best «mod» imo, makes it more ergonomic especially When heavy dpad use.
Is there any grip that don't cover up the stylus? Or at least somewhere you can clip the stylus onto for easier access?
It has a hole for the stylus. I bought it off eBay a few years back. Its really nice on my hands whenever i play snes games.
buy skins, shells and maybe swap buttons if you feel up for it
buy nintendo official themes
Second the button swapping. Favorite thing I’ve done.
And that’s not switching buttons around, you order a set of buttons for your model 3DS in a different color than what you have, open up the system, and swap them out. Example, if your 3DS was all black inside, you could put a white d-pad and ABXY buttons.
Adding bluetooth, USB-C and wireless charging would be cool mods. Shouldn't be too difficult as theres a lot of space inside the housing and people have done it before.
DisneyKiss store on alibaba has nice charms
I literally have that 3ds in the pic
U could buy a sticker set you like and put those behind the case without sticking them onto your DS so you could swap them out once you dont like it anymore that is what I do at least. You could also buy a charm
I want to add a custom theme to my 3DS, and possibly get a way to install some games without having to play. If you can add me on discord and walk me through it I’d really appreciate it!! shxpø#7206

Use https://3ds.hacks.guide/ and NEVER use video guides as they are usually outdated
The 3ds is probably the most simple and straightforward console to mod. Wii is pretty easy, Wii U is straight hell for me, I can’t figure out how to mod that thing even with the guide.
Wii U is my next mod, now I’m worried lmao. But it’d be worth it to have a console with ALL of nintendos home console games and controllers, pre-switch. Wii was fun to mod but the weirdest mod for me was the original xbox, it wasnt hard but it was very strange. What are you struggling with on wii u?

It's beautiful 😭 ♥️
I wish I was good at decorating things with stickers 😢
Does anyone in this page use custom firmware or I am on the wrong page? New to reddit and looking for possible guidance
A lot of us do, yeah. Though you might want to check out the r/3dshacks subreddit as well. There are some really knowledgeable people on there as well as some helpful resources you won't find anywhere else.
sayonara bye bye
Yea I have 3 all with CFW installed. It’s the only way to run a 3ds these days.
I use Luma
r/3dshacks But 3DS modding/CFW is fine here too. (I definitely don't own 3 CFW 3DSes or anything...)
I want to know about hardware modifications, such as upgrading the charging port to a Type-C port, etc.
Something that would really improve my console.
Adding Bluetooth capability (for connecting wireless headphones)
