Good morning Acura family. Currently wife own a 2020 rubicon, and we are considering selling. Looking at a used MDX type S, but the air suspension worries me buying used. Is there anything to look out for? Has anyone had major failures? Any advice is welcomed, and I hope the MDX lovers enjoying it! We can’t wait to have one!
Haven't had any issues with mine in 14 months, but I did buy a 2 year comprehensive wrap warranty to take everything out to 6 years just in case. You could probably do this for 1500 bucks if you shop around.
We have two considerably higher performance SUVs as our other cars, but the type S Advance is by far our favorite all around vehicle. It just does everything so well.
This is awesome to hear! It’s truly a great car, from a 2017 stand point. FIL owns one besides the transmission it’s fairly comfortable car and nice. But the new one is just 500x times better I’m sure! Glad to hear that it’s first choice for you guys. Makes me feel more confident. Side bar, what are the other SUVs you own?
22 x5m50i, 19 F Pace S, and 21 540xdrive ( so I can honestly speak from experience in that regard). All pretty much fully loaded. The Acura has the best audio system, air suspension, and the best massaging seats. But I will say the seat ventilation is the worst out of all those cars.
not to throw a wrench in the mix, but we're probably going to be trading our f-pace in as it's going to be 4 years old pretty soon, and we drove the top trim cx-90, and I know this is an Acura sub, but the cx90 is good...real good. As in I have no problem trading our Jaguar in for one. I'd test drive one before you make a decision.
Really great vehicle. I've not heard anything negative about the air suspension. This really shouldn't be a concern at this point though. It should still be under warranty. Get CPO if possible and then get Acuracare on top of that to max out the warranty.
Okay great kinda the route I was thinking of taking. Just acuras initial run with this, makes me nervous as any other manufacturer. But great! I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying yours!
I would be more worried about the transmission.
Mine seems to being going out, cant floor it from 0-60 without the software protection kicking in at 40k miles. Of course im in a TLX S but the issue was originally reported by the Savage Geese youtube channel in an MDX Type S and Im not the only person to be having the issue.
Sorry to revive an old thread, I'm looking for a used MDX Type S Advance and was wondering if that issue persisted for you? Has your transmission required any maintenance or anything? Have you done a transmission fluid flush? I remember that Savage Geese review and have seen chatter about the issue on reddit. Is it unique to the 10 speed in the TLX Type S and MDX Type S?
I've experienced a similar issue in my 2020 TLX SH-AWD with the ZF 9 speed transmission. On multiple occasions, the car would have a 1-2 second delay when trying to go into WOT and merge into traffic from an on ramp or a turn. One time when I was trying to merge onto a highway, I legitimately thought my engine had stalled out and was worried oncoming traffic would rear end me before the transmission caught up and I floored it to put some distance between me and the car behind. Someone on that thread you linked mentioned that Acura dampens the throttle based on steering input and the logic confusion between that process and the SH-AWD logic is what may be causing the issue.
I found a '22 MDX Type S Advance with 44K miles going for ~$55K. I was expecting to save a bit more than than by buying used but these cars are in high demand and the market is still a little wonky.
Owner of a type s adv for about 3 months now only 700 miles but its a freaking amazing car. Get an adv if possible.
We had a 22 MDX tech for a year or so and it was blah. So we got a 23 type s and we really like it. The air suspension is great in my opinion. Can definitely feel a difference between comfort and sport modes. Sport plus is even stiffer. If you can find one get the type s advance model. The stereo and massaging seats are well worth the extra cost. But I will say that the only negative thing about the vehicle is the ventilated seats seem like they’re barely on. Even on the highest setting it’s still not great. But living in Phoenix might be the problem there. Good luck finding one, the apex blue looks great when it’s all cleaned up.
No, both the AC in general, and the vented seats are weak in ours, and we split time between MN, MA, and CT, so nowhere near the high temps you have. Lived up by Pinnacle Peak years ago. I can't even imagine the summer you just had!!
Sheez! Great to know! I can’t believe there’s such a notable difference with the ac options. I have no issues with my tlx. Maybe smaller cabin is the reason. Not sure. But definitely will look out for that during testing phase.
Hi everyone,
I just started looking at the MDX Type S as a replacement vehicle. It would be my daily driver, and the car my wife and I will use for road trips. Kid will be off to college soon, so it will be just the two of us and the dog mostly (and possibly for hauling future grand kids and in-laws in the way future). For those who have owned it for a few years, I have a few questions:
The 17/21 rated mpg seems to be most common complaint.
How is the maintenance schedule? Aside from oil changes and rear diff fluid, anything other fluid changes that need regular changes?
How is the reliability? Some items I'm curious about include the adaptive air suspension and the transfer case. Has anyone had to replace the air suspension? How long do these suspension last? What is typical cost to replace?
I read from another post the MDX-S transfer case is same one used from the TLX-S, and some TLX-S owners had issues and needed new transfer case replacement. Cost wise, what are we looking at?
How long do Brembo brakes last? Do you have to replace pads and rotors at same time, or just the pads? I'm guessing Brembo brake service is more costly to replace than non Brembo brakes, any idea on cost?
Even though Consumer Reports recommends the MDX, CR gave below average reliability ratings for 23 and 24 MY. 25 MY is predicted for average reliability. Have you owners found said rating to be accurate?
After owning the MDX-S, would you still recommend the Type S or the non-Type S? Or perhaps another vehicle? I'm scoping out some other vehicles, but there's no clear winner. RX350H has great fuel economy, but has a small cargo space and a weird nose. X5 probably has best driving dynamics aside from the MDX-S, but its maintenance and repair costs I'm too scared to deal with as I like to keep this car for 10 years. Genesis GV80 is also a possibility and is very nice, but has too small of a dealer network and I'm not sold on Hyundai engines, so that leaves out Hyundai and Kia. Grand Highlander Hybrid is one I've kept my eye on, but has long wait list and questionable build quality, plus it's just a huge boat. 6th gen 4Runner is coming out anytime now, so I'll have to check that out, but I'm weary of Toyota's latest turbo 4 cylinder engines and Tacoma derived transmission.
Edit: Can anyone confirm if the MDX-S J30AC engine has VCM? With its turbo, is it reliable?
23 Type S owner here. Tiger Eye Pearl. 20k miles. It's an excellent vehicle. I also have a 21 TLX S.
So far has been extremely reliable. With one exception. About 2 months ago, I got it the vehicle and every warning light came on, wouldn't go off, and it said take it immediately in for maintenance. Long story short, the control panel had went out. Took them 4 days to get the part in and fix it. Was under warranty.
Negatives for the vehicle? Gas mileage SUCKS. The only good thing about the MPG is that it's better than the TLX. The other negative is it could use a little more horsepower.
Other than that--all positives from me. These are the first Acuras I've ever purchased and I am beyond happy with both.
Great to hear you are liking your MDX Type S. How many mpg are you getting? That's odd mpg in the MDX is > than TLX.
Do you plan on keeping the MDX-S for a long time?
I also have a 23 MDX-S Adv (Apex Blu FWIW). Bought mine used, 19K. Chose over the usual suspects - Lexus, Audi, BMW, choice was mainly emotional and for aesthetics, but also financial having previously owned 2 audis, and a big one for me - you see those other cars EVERYWHERE around here, so I wanted something different.
Have only had since July, but I love everything about it (even prefer the track pad to touch screen) except the MPG (esp in Sport mode, which we don't use often due to traffic).
I'm a daily driver, but short commute. City driving, always heavy traffic, my average mpg fluctuates on 16 in Comfort mode (14-15 in Sport). Recently did our first road trip in it and fell in love even more. MPG average was 21.4 for the road trip (also Comfort mode).
No issues so far (knock on wood). I keep cars and bought this one fully intending to keep for 8-10 years.
I have a 2015 base mdx with tech and ent packages. i got in october. I love this car. Only issue i have is the emissions system tripping a fault every now and then. Im pretty sure its just an o2 sensor cause ill reset the computer by disconnecting the negative battery connection for 1 minute. It usually doesnt come back on for like 1k miles so far.
Other than that, mileage is great if youre extremely light on the pedal. Ive been averaging 25-27 city and 35+ highway. Ive seen it get to 37 before. Its quick as hell. Can almost keep up with a tesla in normal or comfort modes
There is a feature on the engine called variable cylinder management which helps save gas by switching off cylinders all the way down to 3. The downside is that this introduces uneven wear to the engine and can lead to issues including engine mounts going bad. There is a little connector you can get to disable that pretty much. Its 100$ and its called s-vcm.
The shocks and struts seem to wear out quickly, so i would say if replacing, go with good quality aftermarket oem or coilover suspension. I like trq from 1aauto
Ive put almost 5k miles since october and this thing is a beast already. Im sure the type s would be sublime
I get 19.6 avg in my ‘24 TLX type S so this varies a lot by driving behavior. If in sport mode all the time on either MDX or TLX the engine is going to constantly be at much higher RPMs than what it needs to be at therefore using more fuel. I drive in normal the majority of the time with mostly all city driving.
Average for the MDX is 16.5 MPG. The TLX comes in at about 14, but I drive the TLX in sport mode.
We had a 2021 TLX Type S we traded for a 2024 MDX Type S. Got a new grandson and we needed room for a car seat for him. We had good luck with both but didn’t put a lot of miles on either. Gas mileage does suck. Love the massaging seats. I love the MDX but I’m not sure if I would get another.
You say you love it but wouldn’t get another?? Can you elaborate why? What would you opt for instead?
2025 MDX Aspc. No issues at 15000 k. Highway mpg around 24-25 mpg. Very responsive during a 3500 k trip. Seats quit comfortable for long trips. Good to drive 500 miles before needing a break. One quirk...cannot turn off the system that tells you to "steer" even when driving with full attention system activates indicating to steer and if you don't it will shutdown the ACC cruise control....very annoying. Overall, a pleasure to drive.
Own a 23 for over a year now at 10k miles. Love it and has not giving me any issues. Yeah mpg is awful, especially being in the city. Took it to a 1k mile road trip with 1 yo in the back and it felt like a breeze.
I've had my '25 for 6 months. It's been perfect so far and I really enjoy it a ton. Zero issues at 6,100 miles, which is to be expected. Someone with an older one can comment about those wear items. Computer says I've gotten 20.2 mpg during that time, and I regularly hit 23-24 on highway trips. My only complaint is the fuel range is low 300s but that's minor.
I’m going to add my experience just as a warning. I could be unlucky, but I’m not the only one with this issue at my dealer and it seems someone has identified the problem on a TLX forum and warned it is a design flaw for MDX/TLX models with adaptive dampers.
My car is currently in for a $10k fix. I have a 2022 Type S advanced with tow package added.
I had a horrible experience with the dealer - after signing all paperwork on the loan and purchase, found out they had damaged it on arrival (I ordered the car 6 months prior). Took forever to get them to fix and obviously not the car’s fault so won’t go into detail there.
About a year into owning it - intercooler inlet tube popped off while on the highway. Car maxed out at about 15mph, which thankfully was enough to get me off my exit. Said everything was wrong, would not turn back on. Towed to dealer, they had it for 2 months because replacement parts were backordered - protocol was to replace even though nothing appeared wrong with the parts themselves. They didn’t install correctly, popped off again on my way home the day I picked it up. Fixed it again and haven’t had that issue again. My husband is convinced they had to remove this tube in the first place to install the fan for the tow package, so all issues up to this point might be dealer inflicted.
Now to the current - adaptive damper/air suspension problem. Apparently there is a sensor/plug that is designed so poorly water can get inside, freeze, expand, damage and corrode and require the entire wiring harness and the sensor to need to be replaced. Hence the $10k since they have to tear apart the entire car. This happened to me at 53k miles. So warranty is expired. 2 other 2022 MDXs were getting this repair at my dealer on the day I came in with the issue. They were still under warranty. American Honda has agreed to cover 80% of the fix. I did find someone who just posted the warning about the design flaw on the forum on March 30 as I was trying to determine how to prevent this issue from recurring.
I’m genuinely sad about the car and my experience. This was my first Acura and I bought it thinking I’d have reliability. Instead it feels like a very expensive mistake. I love everything about the car when it’s not breaking in some way. I don’t want another car, but am worried I might have to get one or risk shelling out thousands every 3 years to replace some catastrophic failure.
I used to own a 2003 Acura TL. Loved that car but someone crashed into me after owning it about 8 years (bought it used with about 70k miles). Needed a replacement fast and decided I wanted a SUV with AWD. Bought a 2013 Mazda CX-9. I liked the car at 1st but never loved it. Ended up giving me problems around 150k. Differential was going on it so I decided to buy new car instead of putting more money into Mazda. Picked up this 2020 MDX w Technology package and have been very happy with purchase so far. Paid 24k for it. Has 90,000 miles on it so I had dealership (Honda) I was buying it from replace the timing belt and water pump as part of my negotiation. Didn’t want to worry about paying for it next year. It definitely reminds me of the TL I had. Drives real smooth and plenty of room inside. Probably staying with Acuras now for the rest of my life. Next one will be a Type S though!
Had an 18 mdx that had trans issues so I had to trade out of it. Luckily the 2020 model year fixed the tcm so it actually shifts correctly. I’d still have that truck if it wasn’t for that issue. When my finances allow I’d get the new body style of the mdx it looks so good. Your mdx looked exactly like mine I still miss it.
The 2003 TL I used to own I bought from a private party. He had to have transmission rebuilt right before he sold it to me. Think having transmission problems at 70k miles turned him off. I got a good deal on it and rebuilt transmission never gave me an issue while I had it from 70k to 200k miles.
I used to have a 1990 Acura Integra sold that at 321,000 kms. Then I had a 2004 Acura EL, that car went to car heaven as I got veered off the road by a semi. Drove a 2003 Toyota Echo afterwards for awhile. Now I Drive a 2010 Honda Pilot. I want to go back to Acura but man they are pricy. Also I hate car shopping. LMAO
That is why I have to buy used. But a good used one will last a while as long as scheduled maintenance is done.
Great car! My 2019 has a 1/4 million miles no issues
Sweet! Acura for life my guy!
I bought a used 2010 TL in 2023 and loved it immediately. It had 50,000/m. I went up north last year and a deer flew out from the side of the road and hit the front passenger door. I keep up on fluid changes and oil. There's always been some odd noise and somebody told me it was my wheel bearings so I took it in and it was the transmission. I had to have it rebuilt . That was in May. $4330! Two weeks later I needed struts all around. I just made an appointment to have a new timing kit installed. The mileage is now 104,430. If I would have given up on the car I probably would have only been able to afford a Nissan. I'm much safer in the Acura and to be honest I love the way it rides and I love the technology package. I go up north quite often (600 miles round-trip) so I'll get a rental. I'm 70 years old and this will probably be my last car. I love the way it rides and it honestly looks just a sharp as a new Honda Accord. I'm glad I bought it and it was worth the repairs!
Just thought I would leave this here. I have almost 75,000 miles on my 2022 MDX Type S. No major repairs. No issues on Air suspension. Great car. I had a 2008 Acura TSX before and also had no issues so I came back to Acura after hopping around.
So in regards to reliability, take it in to the dealership, do maintenance and it should be fine. I drive this car hard. Great family hauler and looking to keep this past 200K.
75k is approaching the break-in point for a Honda, you're about 25% there until you can say it's high mileage.
My 2022 MDX A Spec engine blew a rod bearing at 56k miles. I drove it occasionally rough but was not expecting a J35 to go that easily. All was under warranty, but definitely not what honda is usually known for.
153000 ish kms and just gettin started
I'm at 276k and I'm feeling it lol, 2010 Acura TL sh-awd 6 speed. Engine and drive train is still strong but every year something goes.
But isn’t this a brand new engine. Limited data on the 3.0T
Glad to see it’s no garage queen. Let us know how well that suspension holds up at 150k.
Air suspension seems to be something no manufacturer has mastered. It's the nail in the coffin for many luxury cars.
That's not high mileage. Come back in 100k miles
Ok
Ok
Considering a three row suv with some performance feature.
MDX type s owner, how do you feel the reliability of the car?
Searching online, looks like Type s in TLX potentially can fail transmission at 25k miles. That’s is insane. Same platform, I worry MDX can do the same.
Also heard Acura and Honda dealer refuse to fix things and just cannot do much.
This is relatively new platform and new set up, will it end up with similar if not more maintainer hassle compare to BMW?
I have yet to hear about any of these issues, specifically the 10 Speed Autos failing at 25k miles. Just do the required maintainence at the right intervals then everything should be fine.
Terms of reliability, its a honda. All the acura owners including me have known about smaller issues that doesn't really affect the car as much, but all are still running well. And the difference in transmissions between the Type-s and the lower trim models for the TLX and MDX are essentially the same besides maybe more built to handle the extra power and torque from the V6 Turbo.
Where are you seeing repeated issues with the TLX Type S transmission failures? I don’t think I’ve seen one instance of this, and I’m in a FB group specifically for the 2nd gen TLX. Can you share links to these transmission failures?
My Acura dealer has fixed everything I’ve brought to their attention.
I saw it from a comment in this video: https://youtu.be/8fgh7QdFbIw?si=40UGkebBJRDbzwpi
Just so I am understanding you correctly, you’re pointing to a comment about one single failure, correct?
I have a 23 Type S advance and the only issues I’ve had are the sunroof and drivers side window motors go. They were both replaced under warranty. It’s our 4th MDX and our favorite by far. Never any reliability issues with any of them
4th mdx in how many years?
2 years
2021 tlx owner here with 36k miles and loving the reliability of acura so far. Everyone I know with acuras don’t have any significant issues vs other makes either.
Not true. Not a trend with this 10speed.
MPG is the biggest issue with the current MDX (in both normal and Type S trims). A hybrid system would really go a long way towards making this a more competitive (and faster) vehicle.
Glad to hear you like the touchpad. I too prefer it to a touchscreen 99% of the time. About the only time it stinks is when I’m having to input an address in Google Maps, but in that case I’ll just do it on my phone.
It’s a shame Acura is moving away from it, instead of leaving it and just making the screen touchscreen for those who love to complain about it.
Took me a few days to get used to it but now I can control everything without looking down and I honestly like it a lot. I think if people actually tried it for a while they would end up liking it... No fixing that horrible mileage though.
Yep, that’s the biggest issue. The car reviewers get in the car for a couple hours, maybe a couple of days, and don’t have the time to get used to it, so they complain about it.
But when you live with it, and you get used to it, it’s actually a very good system to use the vast majority of the time (even in CarPlay, where it’s not true position).
I like being able to adjust everything with my fingertip while my arm is resting on the center console. No leaning forward in my seat, no reaching for the far corner of a touchscreen.
I do think a rotary dial would be better than the touchpad, but both are better than a touchscreen IMO.
The fuel mileage is definitely a bummer though. I’ve thought about a CPO MDX-S as a replacement for my TLX if I wanted to get something with more room, but I don’t know if I could deal with the mileage on a daily basis.
How many miles on it in that 1.5 years? We picked up my wife's '24 MDX-S Advance in November 2023. It just rolled over 9k miles. Average mpg over that time is 19.1mpg with about 50/50 highway/city driving.
I have driven it more than her since I typically drive when we go out together. I consider myself having a pretty heavy foot.
10,800 miles, picked it up I think August 2022. I'm also mostly driving city which is why mileage might be so horrible... 19.1 is fantastic!!
Yeah, my 24 Type S is getting 15.X city and that is what I mainly drive. I can feel my wallet lighten every time I push the accelerator.
Just sharing my thoughts on my 2023 Type-S advanced. Has been a great family car so far, just a few minor complaints. Mainly the horrible mileage (16.3 mpg). Only one minor issue with interior lighting going out that was fixed under warranty within the first months of delivery. About to take it in for my second oil change at about 11k miles.
I actually like the touchpad, and slightly prefer it to the touchscreen in my other cars mainly to avoid fingerprints.
Other than PPF, ceramic, and tint, have not done much other than replacing with black emblems and otherwise debadging. Got the tuxmats which are way better than stock mats.
That mileage is so insane. That's like Chevrolet suburban (big truck V8) levels of gas mileage
Nice MDX-S is that your 911 in the background too?
Oh many you’re living the life! I would love to daily my TLX-S with a 911 Turbo or GTS for the weekender. My bank account says I need to sell my Type-S and be happy with a M3 or M5 and daily drive a cheap ass Honda from 2001 haha😭
Same here. No issues with my ‘22.. just getting 17mpg 🫤
You must be doing a lot of local driving and not much on the expressways. My Pathfinder that I traded in for it got the same mileage.
I'm 22 mdx aspec sport trim. No message seats but, aint complainin'. Just hit 10k. Its fun to drive. Rattling in passenger door from my need of bass, sucks big balls for $63k. Not happy at all about that. Going to spend a few dollars on dynomatt. If that doesn't work, im selling it. Big deal breaker for me. I need quality audio. Especially for 63k
Looking clean! Whats a pro and con you have after the 1st year?
This is a great vehicle. Handling, power and comfort. Has tons of power from a stop or from a rolling go. Hit the gas and all the wheels grab the ground and start running. Going around curved roads are super fun in this thing. I seem to never lose control. The wife and I have tried but the MDX does what it’s told and asks for more. The ride quality is great also. Seats are very comfortable and the front row massage seats always make driving a pleasure.
I only have 2 negatives.
The mpg. Personally I wished it had some type of hybrid engine and it might help the 18-19 mpg I get. I drive under 600 miles a month, so it’s not too bad for me.
The piano black on the center console and dash. So hard to keep spotless and the dust off. I clean the interior regularly and dust it, so it’s fairly clean but it sure attracts everything to it.
Beyond those two, everything else about this SUV is great. 👍
I agree with both of those. I got mine back in February of last year. I probably only average 17 to 18 MPG. Lot of City driving. When I'm on the highway for long periods of time, I can get the average up to around 20-21.
The piano black drives me nuts as it's constantly showing dust in fingerprints/smudges.
46 years old, coming back from a snowboarding trip with my teenage son last week, the massage seats came in very handy driving home!
Wow thanks for a good reply. Enjoy your car and drive safe!!
how are you getting 19 mpg lol, I have an aspec and my average is 15 and I drove on comfort, don't really go that fast either
Love the massage seats!
Agreed. Great feature. Will be taking this on a road trip in a few months. I’m not dreading the long drive because of the seats.
It's gorgeous
Super cleannn
I'm going to look at a 2023 MDX AWD Advance tomorrow. 2 hours away there's also a 2023 MDX Advance Type S with 15k less miles for $7k more ($50k list price). Both Acura Certified. Both look like good deals. The Type S would be really stretching my budget but I could do it. Im thinking ill be happy enough with the non-S. Also not sure when I'd be able to go see and drive the Type S. How much better really are the massage seats, air suspension, and brakes?
I know about the turbo engine, but Im not too concerned with it honestly since I may not use sport mode much/at all. But better brakes, suspension/ride and comfort are always a plus.
The non-Type S dealer may low-ball me on my trade too, so the price difference could be closer to $5k (I already got a trade in number on the Type S).
What do you think?
Edit: I ended up with a super clean one owner low mileage CPO 2022 MDX Technology. I already have a "fun" car so the Type S was honestly unnecessary. I drove a couple Advance package and A Spec MDXs and was not blown away by the extra features, and did not feel the Advance package was worth an extra $5k. Im happy with the choice, I have other things to spend the savings on. Thanks for all the replies and insight!!
I lease my vehicles. Currently in a 25 MDX. I went with the model that had the best payment. I don't care what it is, in 3 years it's gone. When I do buy any vehicle, I stick to the base models. I find that all the extras the higher ends models bring just becomes useless after a while if ownership. I love a Type S but it's a family suv, to me I don't see the point. Eventually you get use to the HP and your like ah, it ok. Been there, done that.
I ended up with a Technology package MDX but agree, all the extra "stuff" is mostly unnecessary. And the Type S, while nice, isn't exactly high performance.
The Type S is a very, very nice vehicle. If you test drove both the same day the difference would be noticeable. If you are a person that has retrospective regret (like myself) and you will not be putting your family in a bad place spending the extra money, I’m going with the Type S. The overall cost of ownership will likely be higher long term (gas and insurance) so that’s something to keep in mind.
I had a standard Advance as a loaner for 2 weeks when the infotainment system in our Type S Advance crapped out and it took that long to get parts.
I couldn't get over the lack of low end torque. And I'm not driving either of these cars hard normally. I was also amazed I was only getting 24 MPG in the standard mdx, where I was getting 26 or 27 and the type S on the exact same stretch of 55mph back roads I frequently drive to go to our vacation house. I had to put my foot into the throttle a bit more with the standard MDX because it didn't have as much bottom end to torque, and I think that was also part of the reason that for the week I averaged lower MPG in the non-turbo model than I did in our S.
But ultimately, op should not stretch their budget to buy a depreciating asset.
I agree, it’s a night a day difference. For a little bit more, I went with the Type S even if I have to save a little bit more for a bigger down payment.
We bought a 2024 MDX Advance Type S for the better ride, massage seats and bigger engine. We drive on long trips so comfort was the main reason. If you don’t need a larger engine, air suspension or massage seats, the MDX AWD Advance is also a great choice. The True Touchpad Interface (TTI) takes a while to get used to and it is a bit quirky at times. Overall, we are very happy with the Advance Type S.
Technically it's a smaller engine:-), but I tell everybody it's got a bigger engine too. We've had our s adv for 2 1/2 years and we still love , it's our favorite car even though it's our slowest SUV. But I think the poster should not stretch your budget to buy a depreciating asset. They should save their money for more important things.
I was talking horse power (350 HP vs 290 HP) but you are right, it’s a smaller engine
Yes long drive comfort is certainly a consideration. Thanks for the response.
If it’s stretching your budget, it’s probably not worth it. For me, the most tempting part is the massage seats. The turbo engine is great, but the base engine is solid for everyday driving and a bit of fun.
This is kinda where I'm at. That Type S is just so damn tempting...but do I really need it? No
I would’ve just bought a 25’ advance for a stellar deal. They have massage seats and everything else you could need
I am in the market for a 3 row SUV. I own a 2012 Acura TL and this car has been fantastic. I usually keep my cars for 10 years and I am struggling lettting this one go but it’s time for something new. Since I’ve had such a good experience with my Acura TL, I would like to stay with the brand. I want more room and so I was thinking MDX. I want to pull a motorcycle trailer with it too. I was considering an MDX Advance with the 3.5 V6 but am intrigued with the Type S and the 3.0 Turbocharged V6 with the air suspension. Has anyone bought the MDXType S and wished they bought just the MDX Advance? Is the $77000 price tag worth it and should I be concerned for future turbocharger and air suspension repairs since I keep my cars for 10 years plus?
We've had a type s advance for just under 3 years. It's actually our slowest SUV ( we also have a supercharged '19 jaguar f-pace s, and a '22 x5m50i, all were purchased new) but we like it the best because it does everything so well. The Jaguar is by far the most fun to drive, the Acura does the most things the best overall, and honestly we're not real big on the M50.
Unfortunately the Acura has been the most problematic of the three even though we've had it the least amount of time. I will tell you we had a base MDX for about 2 weeks when the infotainment system fried itself in our type s. I'm not a speed demon, even though we have very fast cars, but it was very difficult driving a car that had no bottom end torque. It also got worse mileage on the highway than the type s. I would absolutely buy a top trim pilot before I bought a mid trim or lower MDX.
The big issue is, and you have to answer this question yourself, is can you afford 77k? It's a lot of money for a non luxury brand car. And a lot of people want a fancy badge at that price point. If you're stretching your budget, just don't do it. Or buy CPO for a lot less. But don't make yourself car poor. I think you also have to get some kind of external cooler on the type S if you want to tow with it if I'm not mistaken. I think it's more involved than just getting a hitch.
Personally, I have no issue of spending more for the type s. It doesn't impact my budget or finances in any way shape or form, so it wasn't an issue for us. But for somebody who's pushing their limit, I think they really need to think about it. In the end it's just a car.
And another thing I would 100% look at is the cx-90. In the top trim it's a very impressive vehicle and I would buy that every single time over the base engine mdx, even the advance model or whatever the top trim is called now. And at under 60k for the top trim new, and under 50K CPO if you look a little bit, it's a relative bargain. I could not believe how good the driving Dynamics were on it when I rented one from Turo when I was on a trip, and it was with the base engine, not even the higher output engine.
Yeah I have to say I was surprised and disappointed at how troublesome my MDX non-S was. I swapped it for an X5 of the same year and mileage because we didn’t really need a 3rd row, and I’m so much happier. I didn’t even get an M50i, just a well-optioned sDrive 40i. I grew up on the idea that a used BMW will cost you more than a new one, and if you buy a Honda it will last forever, but data shows that the turns have tabled.
Ironically and almost 6 years our Jaguar has never been in the shop for a single on schedule service. The m50i went in once in the past 3 years for something. The MDX has been in twice in two and a half years.
It's a strange world where a Jaguar is our most reliable vehicle.
Interesting, I have a escalde but want to downsize yet still have 3rd row. I love the x7 m package series and the type s advance mdx. My wife doesn't like the x7. Son we are leaning on the mdx. I have a 22' tlx (non s type) with 0 problems. Nice little car , full. To drive.
What issues has your type s.mdx given you. Do you still have it. Id like a 24 or 25' cpo. Not new, have you heard if these newer versions corrected these issues? I hear tranny was a real issue..
Have had my ‘22 Type-S for 3 years now and have loved it. No issues. Just about at 50k miles. Fun as hell to drive. I have a heavy foot. Purchased a Pilot for a family member recently and have driven it a bit. It’s fine if you want no joy in your life from driving. Had an MDX Tech prior and really enjoyed that as well but I just love the extra oomph of the Type-S.
I've driven a friend's Advance MDX, and it's actually a lot of fun to drive. The car likes to rev.
Love ours. It’s literally the best product Acura sells and feels that way.
I am contemplating the exact same thing. The two things other than the obvious reliability that bother me are the type S is $7700 more with and has no rebates no incentives .where are the a spec. you can pick up for a deal. And is insane as this may sound I’m thinking I’m going to wait for the 26 because the MDX seems to be the only model that does not have satellite radio and I want to be able to travel with this vehicle and want my satellite radio.
Ii didn’t realize the MDX did t have satellite radio. That sucks.
I 100% have had satellite radio on my type s since we purchased it in 2022.
One thing I don’t ever see mentioned is that the Type S has a far superior lane centering option. We had loaner Mdx that was an A-spec and driving it home the car was just bouncing from one line to the other. Where the Type S actually keeps you centered without the bouncing. (Loaner was for my wife’s ZDX just fyi)
As someone who drives mostly highway/interstate I would easily pay the 7700 again just for this system
Do you know if the MDX loaner you got was AWD or not? The non AWD ones use differential braking for lane centering. AFAIK the AWD ones use torque vectoring so it should be more accurate with its lane keeping ability.
Listen for rear end noise. The wheel bearings are known to go on the first gen MDX and pilots.
Check when the timing belt was last done. If they don't know assume it needs to be done
Check when the rear diff and transmission fluid was last done and make sure it was Honda fluid in the rear diff. Assume you need to change it if they don't know
If it doesn't start up immediately when you turn the key assume it'll need new spark plugs soonish as well.
The engine will tick. Unless you can hear it in the cab don't worry about it. The J series doesn't have hydraulic valve adjustment and it needs to be done manually every once in a while.
Check for rust on the under carriage and by the front and rear subframes
Check if it has a transmission cooler. If it doesn't put one on right away and bypass the one in the radiator. This is late enough in the production run that this isn't as much of an issue though.
Other than that your typical used car checks.
I just sold my 2003 mdx with 200K miles for 1.5K. It had like 3 accidents on its history and a trans that loved to overheat but it served me well.
You talked about the J series not having Hydrolic Valve Adjustment, is that for older J series or newer ones as well? For example in a 2020 TLX?
I’m in Canada but is it just me or does it seem awfully expensive for a 1st gen MDX? (granted it’s the last year of that gen)
I’m guessing you’re in the US but I’ve always thought you guys have a far better used market than we do due to supply. For example, 2nd gen MDX models from 07-09 go for about $6-$8k CAD.
Thats what I was thinking. Even 5 is optimistic for that with 181 000 miles?!?!
~8am black friday 2019.. someone ran a red and totaled my 06 mdx with 190k miles.. 200k was supposed to be a huge milestone, but it was taken away from me!
insurance paid out 4k =[
Not being familiar with these vehicles, my biggest worry is that it’s had a transmission replacement.
Does it say the trans was replaced? Also the mdx is Acura’s highest selling vehicle with a nice 3.5l made by Honda should be very reliable even at 150k miles. Is this awd?
I would avoid early 2000s Honda/Acura V6 automatic models. Their transmissions are known to grenade themselves.
Easily gonna last 300k miles with good maintenance
My 2006 had 288K when I traded it for a 2011. The 2011 is nicer on the inside but I wish I still had that 2006. Sportier & more fun to drive
dude, i miss my 06 so much. so many adventures in that thing. got a 2014 and i love all the new features, but i definitely miss the og.
the tailgate that you can actually sit on and have your legs hang freely instead of an awkward lean on the newer
I am looking for a new car. I have a larger family so something that is capable of hauling 6 people is a plus, but long trips would still be reserved for my wife’s Odyssey. I wanted something with AWD and sporty. I found myself always coming back to the MDX but my main concern is reliability. I tend to drive my vehicles for 10-12 years before getting a new one. Would this be a good choice?
I have almost exclusively driven Honda and Toyotas.
10-12 years with what mileage? The type s power train is relatively new, so we don’t know about long term reliability, obviously I give Honda benefit of doubt because they’ve made turbo engines for decades, but keep that in mind. Also, things like the air suspension are nice, but on literally every over luxury car they fail, usually around 80-100k miles, sometimes even earlier. Again, it’s Honda, but they never made air suspension before, so god knows really. But honestly it’s been pretty solid from what I’ve seen. If you want to play safe, I’d get a regular Mdx advance.
Also, the 3rd row in the Mdx is not that big, fine for kids, but small for teens and adults. For reference I’m 5 10, and I’ve sat back there for 2 hours once, and it wasn’t pretty. One cigarette charge port, NO air vents or anything, so it can get toasty too. Plus little cargo room behind the 3rd row. I’m saying this because you have 6 people, and you’d probably use the 3rd row often. For short trips, it’s fine, but you’d want to keep that odyssey around for long trips.
Tired of this misinformation on air suspensions. If you don’t know anything about them, keep your thoughts to yourself.
The air suspension system in the MDX is something “Honda has never made before” because Honda has never made any air suspensions. The air ride in the MDX type S is made by ZF, one of the highest rated global suppliers of oem air suspensions. We expect 120-150k out of ours and so should you, because that’s how long they last without any issues. Basically the same as metal strut type suspensions.
The MDX Type S is not a 2011 Range Rover. It’s the best product Honda makes.
Don’t know anything? On nearly every car I’ve seen they fail before 100k miles, so it’s a logical assumption to make about the Acura as well. Even Lexus air suspension has failed around then so what conclusion do you want people to draw? But since you seem like an “expert” on the longevity of an air suspension system you bought a few months ago, let’s take your word for it. It’s still going to be a 2-4 grand job to replace including labour, but if you want to go ahead. The type s is a great car, pricy but still solid. I’d argue that the ITS and NSX are the best Honda products but to each their own.
We've had air suspensions in four of our past six cars. In the case of our GLS 450, which we purchase new back in 2017, the rear went out at 2 years in, and about 20,000 miles. It would have been $3,700 if it wasn't covered under warranty.
We traded that in for a 20 GLS 580, and did not have a problem with the air suspension on that. But we tend to only keep our cars for the warranty duration so that was only 4 years. We had one go on one of our jlr vehicles and that was about $4,500, but again under warranty.
Yes there's a subcontractor that manufactures the air suspension, but it isn't just a canned system. There are unique components that could be a problematic. There isn't enough long-term data to support whether or not this is going to be a good system or not. But when we bought our Type S Advance we negotiated in a wrap on an Acura service contract for 6 years, specifically because of the air suspension which was not covered under the powertrain warranty. Which was a pretty good deal seeing as most dealerships were still selling these things for 3-5K over when we bought ours at sticker.
The main issue I've had is the infotainment system in the type s advance, which is unique to that particular model, has had multiple problems, including one-time where it committed complete seppuku on us, and it took 3 weeks for them to get a replacement system in and installed.
We love the car, it's by far our lowest performing suv, we have a supercharged F Pace s jaguar and an x5m50i, but it's the best all around vehicle
Yep, I’ve heard these stories over and over again. And you have your cars for a few years, OP wants to keep it for an decade. So who knows, I could be completely wrong, I hope I am. Acura has had infotainment issues, specifically on the really early current gen Mdx’s, but I haven’t heard anything about them recently, so that’s interesting.
You’d be surprised at how desperate some Acura dealers are to get sales in, especially the big volume dealers. I got 1.9 Apr on my used ilx, I mean where else would you get that low Apr on a used car?
I truly appreciate your thoughtful response!
I usually drive around 10-12k a year so aprx 120-140,000 miles before I trade in my cars. I am getting a new (to me) one early bc my daughter is turning 16 soon and I am giving her the Camry. My wife jokes that the Camry will outlast whatever car I buy for myself next (unless I get a made in Japan Lexus).
If you like the extra performance the type s gives, go type s. Pricy but there’s not much else around for a reliable performance suv. 140k miles should be easy for it. Someone else here claims the air suspension lasts until 150k miles, so let’s take his world for it I guess. We put over 200k miles on our pilot in 10 years, so that’s why I was asking. Also yea the Camry will run forever and it’s probably the best first car imaginable, my buddy is pushing 300k miles in his.
36k miles in 1.5 years on our 23 MDX Type S and no issues. If you think about it, 355hp out of a turbo 3 liter is nothing by modern standards. This thing is build to last.
For what it's worth I have a 22 type s with over 60k miles on it and it's been rock solid. Just fluid changes and tires. It's still tight and doesn't rattle. It's been a phenomenal vehicle thus far.
I appreciate the response! Especially from a type S owner!!
I have a 2014 MDX tech package with 180k on it, no repairs required, just maintenance.
I also have a 2022 MDX type S advance with 60k miles on it and no repairs required at all.
YMMV 😀
Thanks for the reply! Makes me feel better about pulling the trigger on a 23 type S. Just worried about the air suspension going out but it’s too new to know.
I am assuming you changed the timing belt on your 14 around the 100k mark?
So today me and my parents went into an Acura dealership to replace their aging 2014 MDX. We saw this 2022 MDX Type S up for sale at a pretty good price, so we went to check it out and if things worked out, we would have bought it today. We weren't really looking at Type S's since they were usually outside out budget of 50k, but since we saw this one at 47k, we were quite excited to jump onto the opportunity. I mean, its a Type S! The performance line of Acura! So I was expecting this car to be exciting to drive on the road and be different from a previous 2025 MDX I test drove.
So we get to see the car in person and it looks fantastic, couple cosmetic defects (wheel rash, dings and weird blotches here and there) but nothing that was a dealbreaker. So we get on the road and me and my dad swap drivers seats during the test drive so we could both get a good opinion formed.
Once it was my turn, I put the car in Sport+, put the drive mode into S, turn onto the road and floor it and brace myself for the full Type S experience and...
"...vrrrrrrrrrr *shift* vrrrrrrrr *shift* oh we're at the speed limit now cool"
And that was it. It's hard to explain what that felt like over words, but once I let off the gas I immediately thought to myself "that's it?". Like it's definitely quicker, but it did that a little too good. And not in a way that met my expectations.
When I floored it, I expected the engine to roar and be aggressive with its acceleration and be fun. But instead, I just got fake engine noise and a completely smooth acceleration complimented with seamless shifts. It was impressive with how smooth it was, but it wasn't fun. It felt very muted and not too different from a regular MDX. Like yes, it is clearly faster, no doubt about that. But I was pretty underwhelmed after that experience. Like this is the Type S experience? Maybe my expectations are highly skewed, but compared to the Integra Type S and the TLX Type S, this doesn't feel like it fit the bill like those two have.
Now I'm aware that this is an SUV and the other two Type S's are not, so obviously the MDX won't act like those two. I also daily drive a Civic Si, so that car has already embedded the definition of "fun" in my brain. But I just felt so confused after the whole experience. I mean, reviews of the Type S praise it for being an underrated fun-to-drive SUV. But the whole time I was questioning where the fun was.
I think the Type S is a good car, but I don't think it fit my expectations nor my parent's expectations. My father was also underwhelmed and had the same reaction as me. I believe I enjoy a more raw, engaging experience with cars. I want to feel the kick-back of each shift, the sound of the engine, hearing the car push it to the max. The Type S? Did the complete opposite of that. Is that a bad thing? No, but depending on the type of person you are, it might just not be what you're expecting.
We ended up getting a 2025 MDX Technology instead, and it fit our bill a lot better than the Type S. It's newer, no more stupid touch-pad, powerful enough engine, had more features than we could ask for, it's in the color we wanted, etc etc. And the kicker? I thought this one was more fun to drive in a straight line than the Type S. It's slower, but it's a more raw experience than the refined experience of the Type S.
So am I crazy? I think my expectations were just, in a way, unrealistic for this car. But I'm just confused lol.
TL;DR: Test drove MDX Type S, left underwhelmed and confused and bought a regular MDX instead which felt more exciting to drive
I have a '23 MDX Type S, I agree that it is lacking in power compared to the stronger German models. But it's fast enough for middle-aged me, maybe not young me. The luxury is more important to me now, at my age. The 3DS audio is amazing, suspension in comfort mode is like riding on a memory foam mattress, the massage seats are god-tier. It's comfy and responsive, and is also damn good-looking. I'd love another hundred horses, but it works just fine for me, as is. Glad you found one that works for you.
I think people are missing the point. Both those who are praising it and those who are panning it. I completely understand OP's sentiments and they exactly mirror mine. Nobody should expect the MDX Type S to drive like a car just because it is a Type S.. we understand it is an SUV. Also we ain't complaining that it is slow. The main problem it faces is that it is not that much better than the non Type S. It is far from high revving and visceral Type S's of the past.. it doesn't need to be and nobody should expect that from an MDX. But when you stick a Type S badge to anything - even if it an MDX, it needs a bit of that X factor. As an example, MB and BMW introduced the AMG lite/M Sport models like the GLE53 or the X5 M50i. They are not full fledged AMG or M cars but they provide a thrilling experience although at a level lower than the full blown AMG and M cars while still feeling a level above the base non AMG/M versions. I think Acura should've done something similar to the AMG Lite/M Sport experience with the MDX type S instead it is a bit of a neither here nor there experience. Again before people jump on and say "oh it costs way less than the AMG Lite and you shouldn't compare them", again that's not the point and I am not comparing them. I am only comparing the differences between the base vs sportier versions of Acura and MB/BMW and pointing out what's missing in the Type S
Agree. The Type S should be noticeably faster and more powerful than the base model. Acura lost a lot of credibility by just slapping Type S and A Spec badges on cars that are just regular trims.
I think it is more than just making it more powerful. Infact Acura could’ve made it ‘feel’ more powerful with the same power. Given it a bit of soul really. Throw in a bit of a throaty exhaust with a few pops and crackles and made the shifts fart a bit in sport+ etc. that is all that was needed to atleast make people feel special about the type S. At the moment like you mentioned, it is just a trim.
Yep, unrealistic expectations. No matter what, it’s a decently big SUV so it’s not going to drive like a little sports car. I love mine and it’s way more fun to drive than most SUVs I’ve had a chance to drive in a ‘fun’ way lol
Seems like a Porsche 911 type experience was expected in a much larger, heavier SUV, at 3/4 the cost. There are reviews out there that paddle shifters in the MDX are slow to respond and perhaps that led to some disappointment. I just use Sport+ on auto when I want to feel alive.
I've driven non S-Type dealer loaner MDXs and the experience compared to my 2024 MDX ST is night and day. Interior, performance, ride are better and more fun, even with touchpad.
MDX ST is not as fast as a BMW, MB or Audi but it's plenty of fun to drive and at a price point which makes it affordable for a lot of buyers. Cheaper to maintain and comparable if not better at holding its value.
Sporty and luxurious without being over the top. There are many 3-row SUV choices but the MDX ST package is hard to beat. I realize this is a matter of priorities and personal needs and taste.
Glad your parents found the Acura they wanted.
Audi’s and BMW’s are synonymous with trash, and I’d never buy either due to maintenance issues. It’s either Acura, Honda, or Lexus (in that order for me)…BUT… the feel of those BMW monsters like the X5 or X7 or a Q8 Performance leaves vehicles like the MDX in the bottom of the heap. I mean, OP wanted a roar, but that can be accomplished quickly and easily with some tuning and a muffler change. But the BMW and Audi on a twisty highway is indescribable
Can't really defend audi. But I have multiple bmws from the 80s to 2018. S54 with 200k, b58 with 160k(pushing like 550 to wheels on stock internals), m20 with well over 250k. There's many engines I wouldn't buy. But as far as performance cars go Porsche and bmw are great. Acura and Honda are losing their reliability as well in my opinion. The 1.5 is shit, and I've had quite a few ilxs come in,in need of engines due to bearing clearance issues. I mean obviously I have bmws come in blown up. But anyone who overheats aluminum for long periods of time is an idiot. Or anyone who buys an n20 lmao and doesn't think to ever replace the well documented timing chains. Can be diagnosed by removing oil cap. I beat the balls off of my awd tl. But I would never throw 600hp at it like my 335i. On stock internals. So far the bmw has just blown aftermarket turbos and axles 🤣. I wouldn't trust my j35 with any boost.
It’s not unrealistic expectations when just about every vehicle that this car is in competition with is louder, purrrs, has a larger engine, sometimes even two turbos, for the same price point or 10k more. This car is extremely underwhelming for over 80k after tax. 47k tho. I mean, it’s worth it. But Acura dropped the ball on this, when you start up this car, it should sound like (at minimum) a GLE53 AMG because uhhhhh….. you can get one at the same price point lol.
I think it was the Car Care Nut channel that mentioned the front suspensions are $1,700 per corner just in parts, with the rear corners costing $700 each, plus the labor.
We'll see how durable this first generation air suspension will be from Honda. For us, this will primarily be a road trip car, so the annual mileage will remain below 5k. Age, rather than normal wear, will probably determine the replacement interval.
Idk I’m pretty impressed with my 2022 type s…but then again I’m a mom of 2 coming from a cx5 🤪
A 5 minute dealer test drive around the block really won't tell you much about a car's performance unless you're only interested in straight line acceleration. You have to live with it for a while, probing the limits on a variety of roads, assessing its strengths and weaknesses to see if it meets your current needs and lifestyle.
I went to the Acura dealership earlier this year with an eye on the MDX Advanced. It would be our long distance cruiser in retirement, and the Advanced seemed to be the sweet spot in the MDX lineup. Having owned a Macan S and a Cayenne S, we also wanted something easier on the wallet when it came to maintenance.
After a satisfactory drive in the Advanced, I shouldn't have driven the Type S, but I did, and those Brembo brakes and air suspension lured me into paying the premium. I had both features on my Cayenne, and it really transforms the MDX, particularly on twisty roads.
Is it as lively, capable and fun as my 20 year old S2000 on canyon roads? Of course not, but neither can a roadster carry us and our two dogs in quiet comfort over any terrain without spitting the bit. At our last service, the dealer lent us an MDX Type A. After several days of spirited driving over the usual roads, any lingering doubts about spending more for the Type S quickly dissipated. YMMV.
Seriously, got the opportunity but struggling on whether I should get it or not. The active air suspension sounds great but is it really worth the extra? I don't care so much about the audio, extra power, and massaging seats. The brembo brakes sound good though...
EDIT: Went ahead and ordered the Advance Type S. Turns out I'm going to get it earlier than the Advance Non-Type S... it's a win-win.
Well it's about 12 grand, actually now only about 11 grand more than the regular advance since they bumped the price of the regular mdx...
I have one on order but not because it's an all out performance machine. I want something that's comfortable, has good Tech, should be reliable, and the 25 spkr ELS should be awesome!! And it's still fun to drive... Those were my requirements. I have an X5M50 when I want to go hardcore.
So to me it represents a great combination of what should be pretty good performance, along with a lot of nice luxury touches, and Acura reliability. I've always liked how acuras/Honda's drive. I look at it as a high performer in all areas, although maybe not the best in any one category. I think that's how you have to look at this particular model.
Plus it should still be running fine in 3 and a 1/2 years when my daughter gets her license and inherits it.She already knows the X5 is not going to be hers.
Yeah, I'm looking at it similar to you. I think the Advance Type S is good. I like the tech in it and it's definitely a want, not a need so I'm trying to decide if I should really spend that extra 11K over the Advance.
I'm expecting my first child and plan to keep the MDX indefinitely so in the long run the 10K isn't a big deal.
can i replace your daughter please? i would like to inherit the mdx type s instead.
I also have an F pace S. If you mow my lawn and clear the driveway at my lake house for the next 3 years, you can have that!!
If it’s not worth it then don’t get Type-S Advanced 🤷🏽♂️ I think the Type-S is good enough advanced is just giving you everything and beyond abit. It’s up to you if you want to spend almost $100k on a SUV 🤷🏽♂️
Fair... I'd be getting it for MSRP+TTT but that's still like 80K
Yeah $80k and you said you don’t really care for the features the MDX Type-S Advanced would add so it sounds like to me that you should purchase just the Type-S since you won’t really miss the features of the advanced.
Do you know what color and interior color you want?
Depending on how soon you need the car, you might get a non Type S faster. Production on the Type S has seem to come to a halt and no updates have been provided on our orders.
I do think the Advance (non Type S) in carbon, with black wheels and a chrome delete would look pretty slick. Definitely would go that route over an A-Spec if not for my Type S reservation.
Right, because I have to replace the windshield because of a chip and the part for the molding has still not come in, it's been more than a month. The crack has spread all over the front of my windshield so I'm not even driving it right now.
The sooner the better, obviously... That said, I'm willing to wait if it's not too much longer. I'm one to buy and use a car until it has to be replaced... I'm only in the market because I was in an accident where my car was totaled.
Speaking to the dealership they said it'd be May or so and an Advance (non TS) is April so it's not a huge difference in additional wait time.
I think I'll get a quote on insurance to see if it's vastly different and if not, might just bite the bullet for it.
I was just told it'll be another month+ before any arrive.
Can’t you combine The a spec and advance packages together like you can on the RDX?
I have the Type S Advance, and I love it so much. What an absolutely insane car. But my NSX makes me an Acura fanboy already, maybe it's the bias haha
We wanna see pictures of that Type-S MDX of yours preferably posted up with the NSX 👀🔥
I kinda wish I test drove Type S. Does it feel alot faster and better handling?
This is my first Acura. Last 2 vehicles were BMW and Benz hopefully ill have peace of mind with this vehicle cause the amount of issues I had with Germans were mind boggling
I have an A-Spec, nearing 7k miles, and deliberately avoided driving the S-Type. This probably saved me $10k.
The added power might have swayed me. That said, the A-Spec has enough power for everyday driving and handles great. Plus, I value the better gas mileage over the power for the types of driving I mostly due which is Midwest highway and farm roads.
I have no idea how to compare, never drove the A-Spec
14K on mine already. Aside from Acura app not showing correct mileage and range on app, I have no issues with that car.
I know especially when its a Japanese car. Go on MDX forum you would think that these cars are riddled with issues
Same with my Passport. You have to refresh it to get the right numbers half the time. And it's fairly slow because it has to 'ping' the car to get the info. Is what it is.
You shouldn’t have a single issue with any brand new car…
It's completely new for the 22 model. There are always bugs that get worked out over the life cycle of the model. That's true with any car.
Life is too short to be driving in comfort mode
This will be the year I buy a new car. Been eyeing the Mazda CX90 (with 340hp inline 6 spec) for a while, but slowly becoming less and less sure about that one as there are just lots of recalls and random failures leaving people stranded. Highly anecdotal, but even Consumer Reports heavily downgraded the recommendation on the CX90.
Test drove a CX90 yesterday and the seats aren’t that great, the steering is too heavy (maybe fun for spirited driving on twisty roads, but for daily driving it’ll get old quick) and the suspension a bit too firm. And the engine noise is honestly not the best, a bit more whiny than growling.
So right after this I drove to an Acura dealer that had a low mileage used 2024 Type-S MDX on the lot. First tested the regular MDX but that just felt too slow. Then the Type-S and man that engine is night and day and it sounds good too. Very fun to drive.
The interior of the Mazda is perhaps a bit cleaner, but the MDX is more functional with more storage spaces. Don’t like all the piano black plastic, makes it look cheap, but not the end in the world.
I guess a major downside of the Type-S is that it’s not very fuel efficient. And it’s expensive so I’d only buy one lightly used. What can I expect in terms of running costs? And how reliable will it be?
Reliability shouldn't be any different than the regular MDX. Now turbo engines for the most part don't go as long as a N/A engine. Also depends on how you drive, obviously. Shouldn't really cost anymore to maintain than a regular MDX. I am sure it uses premium, so that plus the less MPG is probably the only money difference. I just leased a 25 MDX. So far, best SUV I have owned. Turned in a 23 RDX. Fun to drive with the SH-AWD but I didn't like the 4cyl engine noise. 4cyl should stay in compact cars. But it's seem everyone is going smaller while the vehicles get bigger.
How reliable is the regular MDX?
As far as the engine and tranny go, pretty good. The J series engines have been made for decades atp, very solid motors, just replace the timing belt every 100k miles. The tranny also seems to be good, its built by Honda themselves, so it also pretty solid. The Type S just came out, so I don't know the long-term reliability at the moment, but honda has made turbo cars for years, based off that I think it should be fine, but who knows. I'd be more worried about the air suspension going out or some electronic malfunction tbh, because literally every air suspension system in other cars has given out at some point.
The regular MDX will likely be more reliable than the new Type S model.. base MDX uses the J series family of motors that has been around for the last 30+ years thats been refined over time, the J series has been in almost every Acura and Honda product (Accords, oddessey, TLX, TSX, RL, TL, TL-S, CL, CL-S, Pilot, Ridgeline, Passport).. its naturally aspirated no turbo, less parts to breakdown or replace, less heat, and just overall more durable because of the simplicity.. the only downside is the MPGs and it still uses a rubber timing belt vs a timing chain so it'll need major service every 100k but the motor itself can easily hit 200k without a sweat.. many have done over 300k as long as you keep up with maintenance.. the J30AC in the new Type S has no historical data as this is Acura's first ever V6 turbo motor and although it's also considered a J series motor, it's bulilt and designed completely different than the older platform.. only time will tell how reliable the new motors will be, for now you would just have to go off the brand's reputation of being reliable as most cars with this motor probably haven't even surpassed 150k miles yet
Id imagine it would be reliable. Its a j series engine that been around in one form or another for the last 30 years...
Look up reliability of the tlx type-s (same engine) and see how that goes. If it can withstand being driven hard, driving a family around should be a walk in the park.
There was someone here not that long ago that picked up a new MDX and was upset with the mpg. Something like 18mpg hwy! Iirc.
The thing is, the TLX Type S can’t handle being driven hard. Some owners that claim they never drive their TLX hard also see drivetrain failures.
Its a heavy car as well and with it being an awd "sports car", im sure launching it is brutal on the drive train. Kindda like the 1st gen skyline gt-r. Idk, just a thought. For moving people around, im sure its fine. The j-series engine has been around for many years and there are tons of versions for a ton of different modles. The sh-awd has been around for awhile as well.
Its not like the newer toyota highlanders that are destroying transmissions at 50k and 60k miles...
I have a 2024 MDX Type S. I have put about 14,000 miles on it. Just finished a 1700 mile trip. Avg 23mpg on that trip. Mixture of 93 octane and 89 octane fill ups. 23 mpg on the road doing 75-80mph is what it will do. Around town about 19mpg. I love this car. Handles like a dream and can get up and go when needed. Very helpful when passing on two lane roads. The Mazda may cost less to drive, but no way will it be as enjoyable. If your billfold can handle it, you can’t beat the Type S.
No idea gas mileage on cx90 but like others have said, really really sucks on the MDX type S. I don’t drive it that hard and do 70% city = 17/18 MPG and 290/300 miles a tank. Really think Acura would benefit bringing back a hybrid engine.
I thought the CX-90 was quite desirable, popular, and reliable. I wonder what the reliability issues are.
Edit: thank you everyone for the feedback! Highly appreciate your feedback!
I’m a Honda girly and am curious about Acura’s. Are they reliable? I know they’re made by Honda, but I’m curious if anyone has had an MDX for 10+ years and have had any major issues? I really want a pilot but they’re super expensive. I started looking at the MDX and really like how they look. I currently have an accord and am ready to get an SUV.
Owned a 2012 Pilot Touring and currently own a 2019 MDX Elite. They are similar in terms of engine and drivetrain reliability. I agree with others who say that sticking with base model will save you some grief. I have had issues with my MDX related to corrosion in electrical harnesses that are exposed. They put a lot of road salt where we live.
Hondas and Acuras are basically the same. Both are above average in reliability.
MDX elite? Do you mean Advance? Didn't know Acura had an elite trim package.
Provided you get the base powertrain and not the sport hybrid or Type S, the MDX is functionally a Pilot under the skin. You can pretty much assume any MDX will be about as reliable as a Pilot of the same vintage
my 17 sport hybrid MDX has 120K miles and hasn't needed a thing besides regular maintenance. MDX vs pilot, you lose a little bit of space in the back because of the roof angle but not much . you gain a much better riding vehicle imo.
What is wrong with the Type S MDX?
Nothing really, the J30 turbo is generally reliable. OP was asking for a comparison to the Pilot, which doesn't have the J30 turbo. My original comment was that, provided you get the base NA engine in the MDX, you're basically in a fancy Pilot
MDX is going to be even more expensive than a Pilot. That being said, Acura’s are just as reliable as Honda’s.
I didn’t plan on buying something brand new, definitely 3-5 years old. From what I’ve seen, MDX is cheaper than Pilot but that could be based on trim levels.
For what it's worth, we were in a similar segment and test drove a brand new pilot, and ended up getting a CPO low kilometer 2023 MDX.
Pilot felt very spacious and roomy, but very utilitarian. I don't expect a mid-sized SUV to feel "exciting" to drive, but the Pilot certainly felt a bit more "just get me to where I'm going, thanks" versus the MDX which had a bit more spirit and engagement with the driving experience.
If you are prioritizing interior space, Pilot will certainly feel larger than the MDX. But the MDX felt spacious enough, and when that was combined with the driving experience and higher-end interior, the MDX won for us.
Only downside is the touch pad in the MDX is garbage but anyone whose done research on the vehicle already knows this, and premium gas in the MDX will obviously cost more than regular in the Pilot.
Test drive both So you can feel the difference, both would be good quality. Acura may be more refined on some things.
I have RDX and was impressed at how quiet the cabin is compared to my civic and bmw x1 . And SH-AWD makes it fun to drive.
We went from a 17 pilot. To a mdx type s. And its a way better drive. So much nicer.
Only bad thing is I got 20 to.21 mpg vs 25 mpg.
That's because you went with the Type S, the Aspec gets better mileage (we've had both, upgraded to Type S last August.
Don't the white diamond Pearl mdxs have paint peeling issues?
Not sure. Where did you hear that?
Its possible. Has the timing belt and water pump been done? I have 188K on my 2014.
Belt looks good. My mechanic just inspected it and found nothing wrong. So water pump might’ve been done already.
Make sure the trans fluid is replaced. I change mine about ever 15K miles. Just to be on the safe side.
Oh no, that's the color I'm getting! Of COURSE. I searched high and low for the white too. I didn't know about the paint issues
Just wash it monthly And do the top ceramic coating and maybe you’ll be okay. I’m good so far
How reliable are older MDX vehicles? I heard about transmission issues on the Acura MDX. What model years are best avoided?
How old are we talking? For transmissions: 02-03 were the worst, 04 was meh, 05-09 were decent, 10-13 were solid, 14-16 were hit and miss
I have a 2016mdx sh-awd. Bought it 16 months ago. Zero issues so far. Very happy with it. Very fun to drive, sport mode /sport handling is the sh*t! Behaves like a RWD. Engine sound is sweet.
Very roomy even on 3rd row. Trunk space with 3rd row up is acceptable.
Only complaint…. Transmission is… uncivilized (for lack of a better word) in D mode.
2010-2020 model years for the MDX. New MDX way too expensive.
I personally like the 17-20 Models since the 10-13s are solid but are getting old now.
I have a 2008 that I’ve had since 2010…best money I’ve ever spent on a car. I can’t seem to pull the trigger on getting rid of it because it just plain works. 174k miles. Sh-AWD. Still doesn’t look half bad either.
Bought our 2008 MDX with SHAWD for my wife in 2010, and now it is my daily driver. Currently has 192,000 miles on it and all I did was perform routine maintenance. My wife currently has a 19 MDX and they offered us $4500 for trade in on the 08 back in 2019, and decided not to sell it to have a daily beater. Only downside is the poor fuel economy.
2014 Mdx here, no major issues other than doing the regular maintenance and some service bulletins during the warranty period. Luckily 2014-15 are not on the recent recall.
I have a 2018 with 160k miles. Had to replace the starter once and another time an O2 sensor. Right now need to recalibrate the brake assist/lane keep sensor behind the mirror. Other than that it runs like brand new. No issues
Ours has 160k miles and has needed nothing but brakes, tires and scheduled fluids.
I’d avoid any of the ones under current recall for the con rod bearing failure.
Why? It's gonna get fixed and has an extended warranty if no repair needed.
Using that logic, would you want to willingly buy a Kia that might get stolen or the engine might fail on you?
After all, insurance or the dealership will take care of you, right?
I’d prefer to avoid all of that headache entirely, and just buy a vehicle without known issues with the engine.
Found this example in really good condition with 95,000 miles for $11,750 (I’m looking to spend $7k-13k on this car). I heard that this generation of MDX is extremely reliable, although has problems with oil consumption and mpg. Is $12k for a 2013 car with nearly 100k miles a good deal? Many claim that these particular Acuras could even last more than 200k which is crazy to me but also a relief compared to anything made by Stellantis or GM. What would the actual value of this SUV be?
Mine has 293K on it and am only now getting codes. Great car. As far as price that’s up to you, prices are crazy right now.
Depends if the rings are shot and it uses oil like gasoline.
I won’t know that until I get an inspection scheduled but I drove it and the engine handles fine (no lurches or noticeable engine noises)
Got a Honda 3.7L V6 engine on these puppies. They are great engines but you will want to make sure the timing belt was replaced (Carfax will show this if it was done at a reputable dealer). All Honda V6 engines uses a rubber belt instead of a metal chains and can break and cause catastrophic damage.
Changing that is kind of expensive, about a $700-$1000 ish even with some discounts. And that must be done asap if not already. Also should have had a transmission flush. Best to inspect it throughly before you buy it.
As far as oil burning, best thing you can do is pull out 1 spark plug and see how good or bad it is (if it has lots of corrosion or is fouled with oil it’s burning oil). Again on Honda V6 the plugs are exposed and very easy to access from the side. It’s relatively simple to do.
Do not flush these transmissions, drain and fill.
If it has the magnetic struts…runaway.
This is also true; avoid an Advance trim level because of the adjustable suspension (expensive to fix)
This one is the Tech Pkg so idk if that has magnetic suspension
We have owned a 2010 MDX for 8 years. Currently has 170,000 with no major issues. Timing belts are spendy so look into that before buying. Ours does burn oil, about 1/2 quart per 1000 miles. Hasn't gotten any worse since we bought it. If you can do some of your own maintenance that will help with costs as parts and labor on an Acura are going to be more then a Honda but the ride and performance have been worth it to us. I do have an independent Acura mechanic I trust to do work I can't or don't want to do and he says the car should go 300,000 miles.
Anyone that has a MDX Type S, what were your reasons for buying that car instead of something like BMW X5? It used to be that BMW had a poor reliability. But now that BMW X5 has a good reliability rating (according to consumer reports) then what advantage MDX has over it?
I mean I resold it after 6 months. Lost a chunk of money on it but at least I know that the car just wasn’t really for me. It was very fun though but not fun enough for me to keep an extra $50k depreciating asset around when I’m content with my TLX.
So I have had a bad experience with Lexus and Honda reliability. I bought a brand new Honda Passport and around 40000 KM (25K miles) it suddenly stopped in the middle of an intersection. I had to tow the car to the dealership and it was there for a month. Then a bit later I started getting an error warning about the AWD system. Took it to the dealership and they had to change a sensor. The ADAS on the car was not good at all. The lane keep assist didn't work well and the car wouldn't stay inside the lane. Then I bought a 2023 Lexus RX 350 F-Sport 3. At around 10K miles one sensor started to give me trouble. The dealer changed it but the problem still happens intermittently. Around 15K miles I started to have problems with the transmission which the dealer wasn't able to fix. The Lexus has a lot of little annoyances with the infotainment as well. Other issue is the high insurance of Lexus RX. Because it is a high theft car. I always wanted to buy an off-road SUV. So I ordered a Lexus GX Overtrail+. But unfortunately that car has a very high theft rate as well. Here in the Toronto area car theft is a huge problem. So I am probably going to cancel my order. Both Acura MDX and BMW X5 have much lower theft rates and the insurance is a lot cheaper for both. I save around 150 dollars a month on insurance if I get any of these cars instead of Lexus GX or RX. Everyone tells me to get an X5 but I really like the MDX Type S. Especially with a black exterior and red interior. But given my bad experience with Honda Passport I am a bit worried about the car reliability. On the other hand this generation of MDX has been around for a few years. So I think they probably have fixed a lot of the issues by now
Did you read the post? Reliability of Acura is much worse than BMW these days, according to data.
A lot of the data really is hard to judge or say are problematic issues. A lot of the issues nowadays are infotainment problems, Bluetooth issues, squeaky noises, battery problems which happens to Hondas recently. It reports anything people take their car back for something not matter how small. But usually never power train failure. All brands now a days have more issues now a days because of infotainment
As the owner of several German cars (multiple Audis, Mercedes, VW) I can attest to the shit long term reliability of them. I admit that I have never owned a BMW, but the horror stories of expensive plastic Chinese made parts really puts me off. I will only own Japanese cars because I actually want to own a car for 200,000+ miles. The German cars I owned started giving me issues around 50k miles and were super expensive to fix and maintain. I’m not putting you down if you like BMW, but that’s just my experience.
You are wasting your time with the brand purist here who more than 70% of them dont even owning MdX-S/TLX-S 😂.
Instead come from Integra and CRV owners. Look at Acura resale value and figure that out really quick 🤣
price, I’d even go regular a spec over type S but that’s because I personally don’t care about the extra 50 horsepower for 10k more. But the price you see for the Acura is that price, the X5 is gonna cost you money in options.
maintenance costs
bmw also has too much tech that can go bad, my m340i had glitches and issues within 6 months of me owning the car
looks better, I find it hard to believe that half of the bmw vehicles would get sold if the status behind the brand got taken away cause subjectively I find 80% of their vehicles ugly
A few reasons:
long term reliability/maintenance costs
based on my driving experience, it seems blinkers don’t come standard on BMWs
Acura is a fairly unassuming brand, so you get a beautiful car but the judgment from others (and the likelihood of it getting broken into) isn’t as bad
Acuras are wayyy more stolen than bmws lmao. Tsxs get stolen all the time.
1.) ngl the maintaince costs are probably gonna be the same over time. X5 is better on gas too.
Lmao
Then Why is it that Acuras are among the most stolen cars 😂
The gas mileage definitely sucks, I wish it was a hybrid. I’m driving 4 hours away this weekend and I’ll probably have to fill up like 3 times up and back
But the warranty is strong and I’ve heard tons of horror stories of high maintenance costs on basically all German vehicles over 100k miles. I’ve heard better experiences from Japanese cars
My concern is more about break-ins in my area than the car getting stolen. Kia’s have had issues with getting stolen, but there have been car break-ins that I believe have targeted “higher status” brands
Cheaper..? It's ALWAYS the price.
You can get everything Acura has to offer like massage seats etc. Fully loaded type S is 92k CAD. X5 STARTS at 92k.
Just got my first Acura, a black/black MDX. Was in a hurry at closing and didn’t want to go through the accessories, but want to get some. Curious if anyone has favorites? Also really interested in feedback on the running boards. Can’t decide if I’d like em or if they’d look stupid.
Question, I really want this to be my next car but I’m getting mixed reviews…the numbers online show it being slightly faster than the ASPEC (.4 sec) with a huge disadvantage in mpg. Can you give me some insight from someone who actually owns one!
It is infinitely more fun to drive than a-spec. If you’re concerned about the cost of the car or the cost of lower MPG, go with the A-spec. The extra HP is not with being car poor.
One of the smartest things I’ve read on Reddit, there’s a good reason you own this beauty. I’m pretty sure this be my next SUV!
Personally, in the test drive between both the aspec lacked the extra power and acceleration than the type s. Additionally, I’m a fan of the air suspension and adjustable suspension in general. It will feel like it’s gliding in comfort and then in sport plus you can feel the road and unlock its full power. I recommend at least test drive. Feel free to DM with more questions.
Love the all season mats, crossbars, logo projector, and door sill. I would skip the welcome lights, we were very underwhelmed with those (but love the logo projector)
Logo projector does feel nice. Surprised it’s not standard these days on the Type S
were the welcome lights not bright enough? if you dont mind, can you share a picture?
I replaced my emblems but on black the silver might be better? 🤷🏼♂️
PS I have crossbars but I take them off when not in use. The whistling at 35-40mph is annoying.
Yeah, I did the black emblems, and kind of regret it as they just disappear.
Helpful to know about the crossbars!
Crossbars!!!! Makes any suv look so much better in my humble opinion.. also think the running boards don’t look that great.
Crossbars, all weather mats and cargo tray, and towing package for us.
Just hit 100k miles on my 2018 Accord Touring! Bought it at 80k and it's been smooth sailing ever since—no issues so far! I stick to oil changes every 5k miles and always run it on 92 octane, feels a little smoother that way. PS4 tires have been solid, though they can lose traction if I push it too hard.
Now, time for an upgrade! Eyeing an M340, but debating if it's really worth the jump in price. Anyone else made the switch? Would love to hear your thoughts!
Dang 20k miles and looking to upgrade already?
Granted, I’ve always thought the M340 would be a great next step for this car. Couldn’t blame you if you did it.
Took the BMW 430 for a spin a few months ago—absolute blast to drive! Same power as the Accord 2.0T, but the handling and brakes on the twisty roads were next level. The Accord's got the power, but the steering and feedback felt a bit flat compared to the BMW.
My 2018 HAH Touring is right at 99,340. It’s been a great car, with the only issue being the front radar sensor quit working - a $2000 repair!
I went from a 2019 Touring to a 2023 M340. Completely different cars. The bmw is better in literally every way, including fuel efficiency oddly enough haha. I do miss my Honda sometimes though!
I guess, back row leg space and ventilated seats
Yeah, I dont know about your Honda but mine had weak ventilated seats anyways. And sure the back leg room, but it’s just me. So no need for rear space.
time to do spark plugs and drive belt!
Just picked up this ‘22 Type-S. We’d been hunting them for a few months, and good examples / good deals were few and far between in our market. Went in for a test drive on this one and ended up leaving with it! Thrilled so far.
Would love to hear about anyone’s experience with their MDX S, any tips or things to look out for.
I got my Integra from that same dealer. Congrats on the new car!!
Thank you!
Ceramic tint those windows and you’re golden. Enjoy the ride!
Tints coming asap! And thank you, enjoying it quite a bit already.
Sweet Ride! Congratulations and enjoy!
Thank you!
I just bought a 2023 type s advance with 33k miles for $53,999 in the Midwest. It's a dream to drive. It was also cpo as we live in Minnesota with harsh winters....need peace of mind
Congrats and enjoy!
sexy
Hi, Acura folks. The BMW people told me I should come over here. I’m so worried about reliability so here I am. The MD ex is my second favorite behind the X5 anyway. With that being said, I test drove a 2023 MDX Tek package today and I enjoyed it. The finishing an interior were divine IMO. It’s just a good looking car. It drove well, not too flashy (I live in the inner city, and I feel like something more ostentatious would be break-in magnet) and I think it meets my needs.
Area of tension: -$39K at 55k miles. No factory comp warranty remaining. The dealer offers “lifetime limited non factory powertrain warranty” (w/e that means) There’s no service history listed but it was corporate fleet from the Maryville, OH plant so likely used for training purposes (according to the salesman - keys still have tags referencing the plant so I believe it checks out). I can’t imagine it went unserviced.
Me: not someone who has done any car maintenance (willing to learn basics like oil) Is someone who does regularly scheduled maintenance Wants to drive next vehicle for 7-8 years to be payment free for a while. Drives often (17.5k-20k annually for work but I could do rentals to lessen mileage)
Any advice you have is greatly appreciated!
I got a 2025 MDX and I love it. I wouldn't get anything older than 2025 since the older models use the touch pad for infotainment. According to Consumer Reports the current generation BMW X5 is a reliable car. They gave it 4/5 for reliability if I recall correctly. They gave MDX a lower rating. So if you like a BMW maybe you should consider it as an option. But here is the thing. Every car will eventually break and would need repairs. When that happens the BMW will cost an arm and leg to fix. For us we have one 2025 BMW X3 and one 2025 MDX Type S. I bought the MDX but leased the BMW. So after 4 years when the warranty is over we are returning the X3.
What I do like about the BMW is that you’re able to extend the standard warranty up to 7 years/120k miles and can add a maintenance plan equal to that amount as well, which I think is plenty for a lot of people and covers a lot of worries.
FWIW, I have a 2024 RDX and for me the touchpad is a breeze and simple to use, but it’s all about personal preference. One of my primary reasons for getting an Acura was reliability, and I think the maintenance costs are somewhat lower too. Good luck!
I also got used to the touch pad right away… super easy to use while in my cruising posture and not needing to hunch forward. Most touchscreens are closer to the driver to minimize the bend needed to reach them but also lends itself to be more eyes off the road IMO anyway.
If you can find a one-year used 2025 MDX, I highly recommend you try to get that model year. The mid cycle refresh was a big upgrade to the interior screen (it’s a touch screen, much better!). Especially if you want to keep it for a while.
One thing to know - the gas mileage is really bad. If that doesn’t bother you, it’s a great car that should be reliable for a long time.
Have the dealer print out the carfax. Make sure any transmission fluid and/or transfer case fluid is changed. Get an alignment. Check for recalls here:
The carfax has been checked, that’s how I know the service history isn’t listed. They too were confused. Working on solutions to figure that out. Thanks!
Look at AutoCheck. If it's not on Carfax, it may very well be there.
Is this AWD?
I'd be ok to pay 39k if it came with service history, CPO warranty and AWD. This one does not. If you have more time, I'd keep looking!
In Socal, I can already see better deals. I see a CPO one at 28k miles for 38k.
It is AWD. This is very helpful but also disappointing because SoCal is thousands of miles away :’(
Until last year, we had two X5s....the one bought new was flawless. The M50i bought with 25,000 miles was not. All work was covered under warranty but it got ridiculous how often this thing required repairs.
This experience led me to an MDX and I couldn't be happier. It's not as flashy but I'm good with that.
That N63 in the M50i is not known for reliability at all and infamous for all the issues it has. I’m not surprised you had issues with it.
Considering buying this car - does this seem like a good deal, assuming it's in decent condition? (I would get a pre-purchase inspection before moving forward.) Any thoughts on the year/make/model? I know it's due for a timing belt replacement if that hasn't been taken care of already - is there anything else I should be looking for? Any help would be much appreciated
They are notorious for having failing transmissions, specially those years. Ask if its been done, and give it a good test drive. The engines are very strong and do last a while, for a rebuilt transmission you're looking at about $1800-2000.
Wasn't it the first gen with the 5-speed transmission that were so terrible? '07 was first year of second gen. We owned a '12 MDX with the 6-speed and it was great for 200k miles. Didn't see too many others on the owner boards complaining about failed transmissions but you have to keep up on the drain/fills or they shift funky.
This looks great - can't wait to see the Type-S treatment on the RDX.
Unfortunately, the RDX Type S is not in Acura’s current roadmap.
Not with this generation but it has been stated that all Acura products will have a Type-S variant. So the next gen RDX should offer that.
The RDX is not getting a Type-S for this model generation.
Mine arrived today. Not gonna be able to pick it up until Saturday, due to work schedule. Its killing me
Please post initial thoughts regarding engine response, ELS, and seats, if Advance. I'm frustrated with lack of any reviews so hoping that some who got their cars early can provide some feedback.
Acura should be contracted to keep government secrets under lock and key with how little info has leaked on the type S.
Seats are great, comfy, and the massage function is awesome. The 9 diff modes and 3 diff intensity levels took the sales guy by surprise as no one had been in the car other than the tech that test drove it when it arrived, and the detailer who cleans it all up before i got there. And, only driven a couple hours in it, but no colors rubbing off on the orchid interior.
Its a little wierd getting used to the ride height changes when u switch modes, but the air suspension is cushy. Like floating on a cloud. I think the brakes were great. Sound system is awesome. Literally speakers everywhere in the thing.
I will be heading back over to the dealership today however, as it was bucking a little when i would get on the throttle, and there is a burning smell in the garage. Not sure if its a brand new car thing (was researching and saw some people post from other cars in the past, the burning smell could be coatings on exhaust, etc that wear off. Not a fan of the bucking though, so will try and swing over and have a tech take a look at it
I agree. I have done searches every day looking to see when an actual review comes out. When I talk to the salesman yesterday he said they're demo vehicle hasn't even shown up yet. I was fifth on the list as far as orders, but I think I'm the first to receive my car. They said they're expecting their demo to come in sometime maybe next week.
I would call off work and drive the 2 hours to the dealership if they called today to say it’s ready to go. Can’t wait for that call
The MDX-S Advance offers a good value as you can’t get anything at this price point with the same or similar features.
The massage seats are fantastic. I was afraid it would be like the old bmw 740 massage that was a gimmick at best. These are the real deal.
Hows the massage seats? Do they work or is it just a gimmick?
Live on Ontario, Picked up this 2019 a spec today, 88,100kms on the odometer (54,700 miles) for 30,000$ (USD 20,950). No accidents one owner serviced at acura dealer it's whole life. I felt i negotiated a good deal on this just wondering what people thought! Been a long time since I bought a car but I spent a good amount of time searching.
Pretty decent.
Check if rod bearing recall and fuel pump has been completed!
It hasn't but it is pending. When searching I was looking for one specifically that had the recall on it because from what I've read it has effected almost all j35 models from the 2017-2020 year range so I wanted to make sure i got one that was covered under the recall. I seem to be one of the few people that is not in a rush to get the rod bearing work done though. The recall will be pending for years, i don't really see the point in rushing to get it booked in when the worst case scenario is that acura has to replace my engine free of charge at any point if I get the knock. I think people with cars that haven't had any issues are overreacting a bit. I'm kinda just looking at it as an extended engine warranty that acura has to honour.
I've been tracking CPO MDXs in Canada for the past year or so, and at 6 years old with 88k km, you're pretty much bang on.
I also tend to over research future purchases!
Thanks! This was from an original owner private seller, I found most of the comparables at this mileage were either around the 32-33k mark i had seen a couple around 31 but they all had like 15k plus claims on them. Also dealers do all sorts of weird shit these days with cash purchasers which I was. Almost any listed price had anywhere from 1-2000$ discount built into their price for finance only buyers but if u wanted to buy cash they wouldn't even want to do business with u. Then the private dealers with their bullshit 799-999 "safety package" which is just the dumbest shit. This is my 6th purchase and I was glad I could continue my tradition of working with private sellers. Dealers are the worst lol
I like the new keyfobs
Still looking for a place that sells it at msrp
Getting my RDX at MSRP in florida!
The Type S doesn’t come with running boards?
Running boards aren’t exactly sporty either, they would look out of place on the Type S
On a type S? It's easy to find a non S for MSRP but all the Type S have been over MSRP+ additional accessories
It is not mine sadly, I detail and get them ready for whoever bought them BUT I do however own a 2018 TLX A-Spec Advance V6 and am hoping to own a Type-S within a couple years!
What’s an A-Spec Advance? From my research a true A-Spec only has the tech package and didn’t get any of the Advance stuff.
If you don't mind me asking, what's your teams' process for detailing new cars, like what kind of PPF, chemicals, etc. is used?
Thoughts on this and what would you offer?
If the one you like isn’t an advance, ask to see one of them as well. The type s advance is the complete package. It has a way better audio system, ventilated seats, massaging seats and maybe a few extra bells and whistles. But the audio is absolutely outstanding. It shouldn’t set you back that much more either.
Agreed. I have an MDX type S advance and it’s worth bumping up from the base type S. Better sound system, nicer rims, 360 camera, massaging seats. Love mine
I agree. The advance if you can swing it is better IMO. The upgraded options are worth it and the wheels look better
HUD. Surround View Camera!
I got virtually the same thing but in A-Spec and red, was $10K less. CPO and about the same mileage, was the dealer loaner. If you can afford it then go for it, we could not quite afford what you show but we really love the A-Spec, my wife gets it and I get the hand me down 2016 MDX SH-AWD.
Niice! I was looking at the A spec originally due to cost but found this one
I paid around $51k and got a 2.9% from Acura financial back in Aug so was a sweet deal.
If you don’t buy it I will… I’m looking myself and that’s a really good deal.
Looks very similar to my 2022. My brother has an A-Spec and I got the Type S. I find the Type S much nicer to drive. It's a fun SUV.
Beautiful
My MDX Type S has been my favorite car I have owned. Pull the trigger - you won't be disappointed!
127000 miles so it’s not near brand new
Whenever people have gotten in the car for the first time they mention how nice it is and I drop the bomb that it’s 13 years old, they can’t really seem to believe it. Really nice car
Traded my ‘09 for a ‘20 a few years back and I STILL miss it! It was my first “grownup” car purchase and it drove like a champ.
I actually like the design of this generation better than the generation that followed.
That Gen also ran and shifted better than the following Gen (at least ours did).
Ridgeline owners like to complain about the 6AT in particular, but I’ve never had an issue with mine in my TL. I hated the ZF9 though.
They live longer as well
NEEDZ MOAR PHOTOZ!!!
Seriously, though, you’ve kept it in great shape. I’ve seen plenty of second-gen MDXs that look every single day of their 12, 13, 14, or whatever years. Yours looks fantastic.
This picture’s a year old and right after a car wash. Currently the car is dirty as hell because my dad drove it through a 4x4 trail for a long hike he wanted to do lol
They make ATVs and UTVs for that! Don’t let him abuse your MDX.
I get this a lot with my wife's '09. People don't understand how it can still look so good and have all the things it does. There truly great vehicles!
I get the same compliments about my TL.
