TL;DR: The Genesis GV80 is a luxury SUV that has garnered positive feedback for its design, comfort, and overall driving experience. Owners appreciate its upscale interior, advanced technology, and strong performance from the turbocharged engines. However, some have reported issues with reliability, particularly concerning electronics and dealership service experiences. Overall, it offers good value compared to German competitors but may not be without its quirks.
Performance and Driving Experience
The GV80 comes equipped with either a 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder or a more powerful 3.5L twin-turbo V6 engine, providing ample power for most driving situations 1:2
3 (0:21). Owners have noted that while the turbocharged engines deliver a punchy performance, they sometimes prefer the smoothness of naturally aspirated engines for a more laid-back driving style
1:1. The handling is generally praised, with many finding it comparable to luxury SUVs from BMW and Audi, although some feel that the GV80 lacks the sporty edge of these rivals
3:1.
Interior Quality and Comfort
The interior of the GV80 is often highlighted as one of its strongest features. Owners report high-quality materials, a luxurious feel, and an impressive infotainment system that, while initially confusing, becomes intuitive over time 3:2
4 (0:40). The seats are comfortable, with options for heating and ventilation, making long drives enjoyable
4 (0:46). However, some users have expressed disappointment in the hard plastics found in certain areas and the lack of comfort during extended journeys due to seat firmness
1:6.
Reliability and Service Issues
While many owners report satisfaction with their GV80s, there are notable concerns regarding long-term reliability. Some users have experienced significant electronic issues, such as problems with the head unit and HVAC system, leading to multiple trips to the dealership for repairs 9:1
2 (0:20). Additionally, the dealership experience can vary widely, with some owners reporting excellent service while others faced challenges securing loaner vehicles and timely repairs
8:2
7:1.
Fuel Economy and Practicality
Fuel economy ratings for the GV80 are somewhat mixed, with reports of around 17 mpg in city driving and up to 24 mpg on the highway, which some owners find disappointing given the vehicle's size and class 1:8
2:8. The towing capacity is competitive at 5,000 pounds, making it practical for various uses
2:10.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the Genesis GV80 presents a compelling option in the luxury SUV market, offering a blend of style, comfort, and performance at a competitive price point. While it faces some reliability concerns and mixed reviews about dealership experiences, many owners express satisfaction with their purchase and appreciate the unique position Genesis holds against established luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz 1:3
4 (0:14). If you're considering a GV80, it's advisable to weigh these factors carefully and perhaps test drive to see if it meets your expectations.
I’m considering buying a GV80 at some point in the next year or two. I’m curious what current GV80 owners think of the car? What do you love? What do you wish were different?
Traded in my first ever Genesis 2019 G70 3.3t advance recently for a 2023 GV80 3.5T advance. Needed the extra space and loving the car so far. To be honest I also miss having the G70 already but me and spouse already have two other sedans and that are paid off and it made the most since to trade in the G70 I still had payments with. My GV80 came with tow hitch and side steps aftermarket. Beautiful car inside and out with enough power to get up and go if needed. Just don’t pay over MSRP many dealers are at or right below it now, with a few still charging mark ups just to see who’s willing to pay it before taking it off.
Bought the advanced + in November of 2021 for 70k. Sold it today for $62,000 plus made $3000 on the car on Turo. Pretty much had the car for year and half and paid est $300 a month for it. Really good resale value (atleast in this current climate). Car was amazing as well.
which platform did you sell it on? or did you sell back to dealer?
Every time I see the Genesis I can't help but see BMW being left behind. BMW design looks so tired and dated nowadays. Are any of the designers awake over there?
I have a GV80. Overall I like the car. I wish it had a naturally aspirated engine, instead of the turbo charged engine. If you like to drive aggressively then maybe the turbo charger is for you, but my driving style is more laid back, and NA would be better for me. Also, my car has the 22 inch wheels, which look cool, but when you run over a pot hole, it make a really bad CLUNK sound. I prefer a bit more sidewall to smoothen out the ride.
Also the bluetooth audio system sometimes gets buggy. The music will just stop playing for some reason. Sometimes if I press mute, then unmute that brings the audio back, but after a few more seconds, the music will stop again. It doesn't always do this, but it does it sometimes.
I have one too, with the 22" wheels and none of this is true. I have an iPhone and have had no Bluetooth or CarPlay issues, ever. This guy is an idiot.
"I wish it didn't have a turbo because I drive laid back". Just wow. What, exactly, does having a turbo change here? Does it force you to speed or something?
With a turbo charger the engine becomes very punchy. You press your foot down and the engine slowly builds power until the turbo spins up, and then it just jolts you forward. If you keep it in Eco mode (which I do) then it minimizes this affect. With a NA engine, it never does that.
I have one too, with the 22" wheels and none of this is true.
You are the one who is a moron. It is a well known fact that more sidewall makes for a smoother ride. My other vehicle has large sidewall tires, and the ride is much smoother. In my other vehicle I always just ride over pot holes, in my GV80, I always swerve to avoid them.
2 buddies of mine have had the bluetooth issue (well documented). How does your singular experience negate potential issues for other owners?
Calling someone an idiot for stating their experience is fucking weird. Grow up kid.
It’s a Hyundai! Buyer beware!!!!
Just bought a 2024 prestige for wifey. It’s a nice car, very quiet and drives very smooth. Honestly I don’t think it’s worth the money. Coming from a Murano Platinum, you get nearly the same luxury at half the cost. I think the only reason to buy this is as a status symbol.
Pretty disappointed in the tech of the Genesis at this price point. The lane assist isn’t very good. The smart cruise is the same as my six year old Nissan. The self parking is terrible and just a conversation piece. The seats are hard and not comfortable on a two hour drive. You get the same or better tech on much less expensive cars.
how's it on gas?
Not very good. It’s been getting around 17 mog in the city (mostly in eco mode) and 22 on the road.
I just finished 1,000 miles in a new GV80. Reddit was helpful in my buying decision so I wanted to provide my reactions to ownership after 1,000 miles. I’m not super knowledgeable about cars, so don’t weigh my opinions too heavily, but they might be helpful so I pass them along. I bought the GV80 after test driving the BMW X5, Volvo XC60 and XC90 and the Lincoln Nautilus. I came out of a 2017 Audi Q7 that I loved. The X5 was the ultimate driving machine and felt by far the best made of all the cars I tested, but it just drove rougher than I wanted; I felt every bump in the road. The Volvos were fantastic blends of comfort and driving; I really liked the mild hybrid engine. But I got scared by all the negative on line commentary about the Volvo electronics. The Lincoln is a really good car, and fantastic value, but just not in same league in refinement or overall luxury feel as the others. I’m very happy with the GV80. It is super quiet and comfortable, but has good road feel and handles well. Terrific turning radius for such a big car. You do feel bumps, but fine for me. It feels luxurious and has all the advertised bells and whistles. On the negative side my impression is that some of the advanced driving systems work, but not as well as competitors. The cruise control seems excellent, with smooth speed transitions to respond to traffic. The lane keep assist/semi-self driving works, but it feels like a 1.0 or 2.0 version that still needs work—it’s inconsistent on where it places the car in the lane, doesn’t handle even moderate curves very well and the lane change with turn signal seems finicky about when it will work. There is a lot of complexity in the infotainment, but I’m not sure it’s any more complex than other new cars (although the Volvo was so stripped down in that regard that it probably would have been easier to master, but reviews said it was unreliable). The high beam assist is significantly inferior to my 2017 Audi; it seems to read lots of non-headlights as a reason to turn off or not turn on the high beams. Small thing, but the wipers work really well. I’ve had no mechanical issues so far. Bottom line is I’m a happy owner and grateful to Reddit community for providing information that helped me make my decision.
Sounds amazing, same here - very satisfied new owner who will never use assistive driving tech so thank you for sharing feedback on your experience so far! Tested the GLS and the GV80 is smaller but much better vehicle!
Getting only premium and strictly highway driving averages 24.
Wheels+Tires make a big difference as well for a larger car like the gv80.
Honestly, I hadn’t heard anything about the new model, so it wasn’t on my radar.
Fair. Only small details are being leaked about it and I believe some cars are being sent out to dealers in the coming weeks.
I love the gv80. I'm glad you have had good experience in it so far. I will most likely go with the 2025 prestige as well. What color combo did you go with? How has the AC been with the heat? I'm in upstate NY and I'm curious how fast the car can cool and air conditioned seats are.
Is your gas mileage as advertised or better or worse?
About as expected. Range is about 425 miles, which is shorter than I would have liked. I am glad I got the bigger engine; the smaller engine was fine, but you don’t lose that much mileage with the bigger engine and I notice the extra acceleration.
I think the gas mileage is better than advertised on my 3.5t. I consistently get around 24-26mpg highway when the advertised was 22. I don’t drive slow, but I also don’t drive like a maniac either.
Actually it's only reasonable when comparing different suvs For example bmw x5 40 has awd, 375hp and delivers 26-27mpg on highway Hopefully gv80 hybrid would at least match that next year
I just bought the GV80 coupe a month ago. Any big differences between the 2025 and 2026?
3rd row is more standard across trims but I wouldn't recommend for any vehicle under 200 inches.
More driver assistive tech, haven't heard much else honestly - no chassis or engine improvements which just speaks at how confident they are in the car.
This is super helpful for me thanks for the review and don’t hesitate to provide updates! I’m in the exact same boat as you. Was fully ready to buy the XC90 until testing the GV80 and walked away really impressed. Also nervous about the glitchiness of Volvos product. Enjoy the new car! Not far behind you.
I’ll give you another reason to avoid Volvos. The dealer service charges. When you are past warranty they will gouge you. I know most dealers are expensive but Volvo take it to a whole new level. As an example I dropped my S60 T6 off for a check engine light. The car spend 75 minutes in the bay. I know this because I have a forward camera that enabled. They charged me $1400. $400 for a part. The rest labor. I asked them how they can justify $1000 for 75 mins when their posted hourly rate is $250. They said they charged me the book rate. In other words they did 4 things at the same time in 75 mins but the book rate was 1 hour each. Apparently that is legal and they all do it but it is an outrageous abuse in my eyes. When I told them I had a camera and know the exact start and stop of their work and could see the guy standing around doing nothing for half the time they took $350 off the bill. Really? Never again!
What’s your take on the Genesis GV80? If there is better vehicle in its class, what is better. Would like to hear pros and cons about the GV80. Thanks.
Here’s my 2 cents Pros: design (subjective), build quality, infotainment is one of the best in the industry but a bit confusing at first, driving/ handling and price (vs. Germans)
Cons: long term reliability, especially the 2.5L as Hyundais and Kia’s generally have had oil consumption and engine/ tranny problems. Also, price. It’s a 60-70k Hyundai
Long term reliability on all of the high end SUVs is gonna be brutal. I'd think a hyundai would probably have cheaper parts then a bmw or mercedes. None of the German brands are known for long term reliability these days.
That last sentence is not really fair in my opinion. Is a RR Phantom a 500k BMW? Badge shouldn't matter
No not really… I mean an Acura and Honda aren’t the same, neither Lexus and Toyota. The problem is brand pedigree. Even though it’s a new car and probably doesn’t share many parts with a Hyundai it still is relatively new and to create a position for itself in the market as a premium brand will take time. Until then it’ll be looked at as a higher end Hyundai. Acura still has that problem.
There are better vehicles in its class, but they're more expensive.
My mother just got the 2022 GV80 with prestige package. It is the top of the line GV80 so others won't have as many features probably. It is very nice and looks great. there is no hard plastic anywhere I have found that you normally touch except for the spot behind the rear cup holders in the center seat. Great suspension and quiet ride. We looked at the MDX, Q7, and X5. We thought the q7 and x5 were better to drive but in every other aspect they were worse. my top picks would be the GV80 and Q7.
So my dad bought one of the first GV80's in America and I figured I would share the first impression of the car with people.
To give a follow up he had a 2008 Acura MDX Tech with 245k that he's given to my sister. That car is still trucking along and running well, but it definitely isn't as tight as when he got it. It's only had 3 things go wrong with it since he bought it new: drivers door actuator failed ($200 to fix), hose for HVAC broke ($200 to fix with a recharge), and the Bluetooth Module died (no cost, just unplugged). Overall, a great car.
The first step was finding his car. He wanted a 3.5T Prestige Package with blue exterior and a Dune interior. There were only 3 blue ones on the entire east coast with the Prestige Package. He couldn't get one with the Dune interior but he found with the black interior and decided he liked the black too. We are located in North Carolina and the dealer was in Florida. They agreed to $400 to ship the car to NC, which seemed fair. Overall the dealer experience was good. Everyone was nice and friendly minus the finance guy. He wasn't very knowledgeable or nice, but everyone else was great. I know that the dealer network is probably the biggest issue for Genesis but my dad had an overall good one.
Now to the car itself. First things first. If you want to be a sleuth.... DO. NOT. BUY. THIS. CAR. Seriously, this car turns A LOT of heads. In just the short time driving I've had multiple thumbs ups, along with people turning to look at it. My dad said when he first got there someone told him "you have a nice Bentley." Someone put a window down at a red light and said "that's the new GV80, do you like it?" I think a lot of people are staring out of curiosity because they don't know what it is. This car definitely sticks out in a crowd.
On my own personal opinion on the styling is that it's stunning. The entire car on the outside looks fantastic and the blue is beautiful in person. When you unlock the car all the LED lights on car line up all along the side with the front and the back and it's really cool looking. The rims are 22" rims that are beautiful and the brake calipers say "Genesis" on them. The Grille is beautiful in person, but we are lucky in that North Carolina only requires a rear license plate. I am not sure it would look as nice with a license plate in the middle of it. The rear of the car also looks very nice with the way the taillights wrap around the back of the car.
On to the interior and it's just as nice. Genesis used high quality materials throughout the entire car. Everything is either a very soft touch feeling or real metal. The leather seats are top quality too. I haven't found a surface yet that I have touched and thought "this doesn't feel good." The 3D digital screen for the dash is very nice and I do love the inverse tachometer. At first it was a little weird seeing the tachometer go the other direction but once you get used to it it's very cool looking.
The technology on this car is also unbelievable. It does almost anything you could ever think of. It has the "Smaht Pahk" feature from the super bowl commercial which is very cool. The 360 camera automatically comes on when pulling into the garage which is great for parking. A camera also shows you your blind spot on both the right and the left when you put your blinker on in addition to the traditional BSI system. The screen itself has an HD display and the maps are crisp and look very nice. You can check almost anything from the app on your phone, including using the app as the key to the car. The heads up display is done well and you can clearly glance down at the important information. The controls for the infotainment are very easy to use, it has a scroll dial you can use but it also has an option for the touchscreen. The HVAC and some radio buttons are the tradition push buttons to make it easier too. Apple CarPlay takes up the entire screen which is really cool, but the one negative I would say I've found is that it's not wireless CarPlay. You still have to use a cord, which is annoying for such a high dollar car. This is one of those things we are still learning all of what the car has to offer because there's so much there.
Driving the car is great too. The 3.5T engine has incredible power and a lot of low end torque. The car is still in the break in phase so nobody has driven it hard yet but even still you can just feel the power there. It takes corners very well and while nobody has pushed it yet, you can tell how well it handles a turn. The ride is smooth, but the only thing I've noticed is that it doesn't seem to love speed bumps. If you take those too fast it's not terrible but definitely not as smooth as it normally is and my dad has two in his neighborhood between the entrance and his house. However, if you're uncomfortable just turn on your massaging seat. Both the front and rear have the option for heat and cool, and when you hit the button it's almost instant. Don't leave it on level 3 for too long because you'll get too hot or cold.
Genesis offers 3 years maintenance included with concierges service. So they'll just come pick up the car at his house and service it for no charge. The car also comes with 10 year / 100K powertrain warranty which is the best in the industry.
These are just some initial thoughts and I am sure I am forgetting some stuff, but overall it's a really great car. The price point for this makes it very attractive compared to it's rivals and it's nice to see Genesis enter the SUV market which is growing so rapidly here in the US. I am excited to see them start selling the GV70 as well.
Most of these are photos the dealer took (been raining here so I'll have to wait for a better time to take more pictures) but here's some photos of the car:
I’m waiting for the gv70 or a Tesla model y. Haven’t made up my mind yet
Test drove both this weekend, bought the gv80 prestige in a heartbeat, blew the Tesla away.. and some 100k+ range rovers, RX450, and a caddy... Gv80 was way ahead of the pack
The Model Y basically changes your entire driving experience by virtue of being an EV. That’s something amazing in and of it’s own right. I’m able to forgive a LOT just because of how awesome high powered EVs are.
But it can’t match the luxury of the GV70, if it holds up to the 80.
Even the vaunted Autopilot is comparable to Hyundai/Kia/Genesis driver assist features.
GV70 is absolutely stunning inside and out
The GV70 will probably have better QC and comfort (better+quieter interior) but the Model Y will be significantly faster and cheaper to maintain. Test driving both is probably a good idea.
Oh that’s hard. Both are great cars for sure.
I am surprised someone even recognized it as a GV80. After 2 years I still get the 'is that a bentley' comment for the G70. Non-car enthusiasts truly don't know about Genesis (or care tbh). My standard response is it's like what lexus is to toyota for Hyundai, and they still have this deer in the headlights look.
I saw a white GV80 in person while my car was getting serviced (didn't want concierge), and it was oozing luxury. This blue also looks good.
It's not surprising. There's a lot of design cross over with the Genesis and Bentley symbol.
the same guy designed Bentley Bantayga and Genesis GV80.
It totally works lol.
Yeah, it’s that square block under the grille.
That's way better than the way they have it on the first gen G70, where it was a plastic plate that had the grill design painted across its surface so that it would blend in.
Try to avoid using adjectives like, “stunning”, “beautiful”, “fantastic” as descriptors. The only visual I got on your review of the exterior was the wrap around taillights. If you do find a part of the car beautiful, tell me why, it helps the reader digest your perspective. Otherwise, kudos.
It’s been one year since I got my 2025 GV80. It’s been the best car I’ve driven, not just owned, and it’s been a great experience so far. The car has been flawless and most everything I would want. No issues, no defects.
In another thread I posted about my experience with the dealership and doing my first 8000 mile maintenance. That worked out great, they brought me a loaner and charged me nothing for the work. I’m just over 10k miles on it now.
I get the feeling I'd have to go up considerably in price to get some kind of equivalent here. A 120k car or something, more than I'm comfortable spending. It feels wrong to me in some way to spend that much on a car. I know there are tiers above this but I don't think it's a price point I'm willing to spend.
Strongly agree, that's why I got a 25" GV80 Coupe to go with my 22" G70. It blows my mind to this day, that I have something so luxurious that others pay way more for when it does not align with price due to the ridiculous amount of money they charge in options + brand status . Besides that, the design is just drop dead sexy and has real effort. People to this day any time they step in either one of my cars are blown away and are confused that this is what Genesis looks/feels like. Even though I will still prob buy an M4 down the road (Unless the G90 Gran Coupe comes with V8!) , I cant get away from Genesis.
Edit: Also, that Storr Green with the white interior is beautiful, really nice spec, way better than going with just black imo!
I'm really big on consistent styling, design and aesthetics. I studied visual communication in college, architecture, and spent most of my career as a designer. The Genesis aesthetic really works. Most every brand I can mention has problems that irk me. BMW, Mercedes, Audi are to my eyes all variations on fugly, its just a matter of degrees. I do love the look of the Genesis line.
The interior is what really grabbed me. It's what you'll spend most of your time looking at, being surrounded by, and the consistent design style, lines and choices they put into it are to me clearly better. I'd also say that no car is perfect, there could always be some better choices somewhere. But the more I look at or experience other cars the more I'm reminded of how good Genesis is.
I’m at 8k miles and have my service appointment tomorrow. So far love the car! I can’t go back to other cars now
I’m interested in the brand for all the same reasons people are posting. I’m curious on your thoughts on the ‘26 Electrified GV70 Advanced? I’m concerned about the range, seems lower than other 2row eSUVs.
No real thoughts on it, I’m in Minnesota so given the winters I don’t feel comfortable yet with a pure EV. Hybrids are great and gas just works, our problem here is not enough EV chargers for long trips. The cold cuts down on battery capacity. I feel like the technology combined with the area makes EVs not so suitable for me yet.
But I keep an eye on EV progress. I’m hoping it makes sense here in the next 5 years. Neighboring Wisconsin for example has a popular chain of gas stations that are being upgraded with charging stations as standard in the next 1-2 years, MN could follow.
66 F and have had mine just over a year. I love it too. I am still learning all the bells and whistles. Right now I am trying to find out how to turn off the childproof locks!
If you figure that one out let me know. They still trip me up sometimes. =)
Been driving my '15 Genesis sedan for a decade and the only reason I haven't gotten another is I can't justify getting rid of my current car. Still drives great, looks great and feels luxurious (and I was able to update the OS to support CarPlay).
I expect to stick with the brand when I upgrade, but I'll never get the insane pricing I got then before the brand was even established - $32k Canadian ($25k USD) for a one year used vehicle that looked new and still had 4 years and 60k km on the warranty.
I also still think the 2015-17 sedan grilles looked sharper than what they replaced them with.
I’m looking to pull the trigger on a 2018 G80 soon and was hoping to get some insight on folk’s long term experience with their G80 sport. I’ve driven the G80 3.8 and loved it, but feel the power of the 3.3T will really make it the complete package. I haven’t driven a sport yet as there aren’t many in my area, but I’m keeping an eye out.
My question(s) are:
-How long are your tires lasting?
-Anyone running on regular fuel?
-Any issues with the engine?
-Any issues in general?
-Would you deem a 4-5k+ increase in cost to grab a sport over a 3.8 ultimate reasonable in this crazy used market? looks like low 30s for 3.8 ultimate and mid-high 30s for the sport for 30-45k miles.
I’m coming from a Toyota Avalon V6, has decent power. Both G80 engines are an upgrade, obviously the 3.3T is a major one.
I value reliability and long-term cost to own, which I know the 3.8 has proven to be excellent in that regard. Hoping for some more detail on 3.3t from you all. Appreciate the help.
Jumping in a bit late. Overall, love this car (2018 G80 Sport 3.3T). Only used 87 octane so far, no issues although I understand I’m leaving some performance on the table. I returned the first G80 due to steering issues - rack and pinion binding probably. This one is fine. No problems with the sunroof so far. Infotainment is slow to load. If you don’t use the factory nav, you can pull the SD card and it will boot much faster. Bass is disappointing at low volume, you have to crank it to get noticeable bass. However, the sound quality otherwise is very good.
The current issue I have is with the seat. During turns you can feel something shifting side to side in the mechanism. The TSB is 20-BD-009HG TSB 20-BD-009HG. Fix is installing e clips on the tilt pipe. I have an order placed for the clips, but the dealer said Genesis may not fulfill it because the VIN number doesn’t match the part… that doesn’t make sense but we’ll see. Hoping the parts do ship, because it’s only $14 and looks dead simple to fix
I bought an '18 G80 Sport brand new. No issues with engine or mechanical bits at all and I love the car. I always use premium fuel though so no idea on regular fuel
The G80 sport came with different sized front and rear tires which was a first for me and kind of annoying as someone who usually keeps 4x mounted and balanced snow tires to swap in each year. But I got used to that and actually have not put snows on the G80 yet - the all seasons are fine as long as you don't let the tread wear down too far
You did mention one issue though that does resonate with me -- tire wear is faster than I'm normally used to and I've had one sidewall blowout that left me putting on the donut at a highway rest stop and a second sidewall slow leak that also caused me to have to swap out a pair of tires to keep the tread balanced.
Upside is that tirerack and others now carry tires for the car, something that I don't think was easy to find back in '18 when I struggled to find non-dealer wheel rims and snow ties. My last set came from tirerack and I had them mounted at a local place without issue
The only other minor feedback is the Sat radio reception is the worst I've see on any car I've owned. My ancient Mazda3 was easily able to tune in radio stations on wooded roads in western maine and the '18 G80 Sport clearly struggles with radio dropouts in areas where my Mazda never had issues and my wife's audi's and VWs have never had issue. My biggest regret was not discovering this issue in time to really gripe about it in the dealer's post-purchase vehicle survey. That said it's a seasonal and location specific issue and with spotify+carplay I don't need sat radio all the time
I appreciate the insight - this is helpful. I’m not a satellite radio user so good to hear no issues with Spotify and CarPlay as that will be my go to.
How many miles do you have on yours?
Regarding tires, I’ve read that the tire warranty is cut in half for the rear tires. Can you confirm that? Also, do you have RWD or AWD? The latter should in theory help with wear a bit?
I absolutely love mine. Had a 2013 2.0t Sonota prior to and this just feels positively beefier in all aspects. Gas mileage around 21mpg which was an adjustment. The SAT radio is useless like the other user mentioned however I do not use it much the same so it’s a moot point. The nitpicky item I’d mention is the creaking/squeaking from the panoramic sunroof (perhaps incorrect name for it). It’s a 2018 obviously but seems excessive for the amount of noise you hear from it. Wasn’t a breaking point for me because the engine wails and driving it is wonderful, especially for extended periods. I am far far far less fatigued after long drives, maybe cuz I’m a hillbilly and this is my first “nice” car. Very happy with my purchase (got the extended 125k warranty and I drive like it) Hopefully this is helpful.
Yeah it seems the sunroof issue is hit or miss with folks. Some mention it being really noisy. For you, is it only when you hit some rough road?
Kind of unfortunate because these are reviewed as some of the quietest cruisers in the segment.
Awesome to hear. I'm in the market mostly because I'm growing up and my Mazda has the most intolerable road noise. Something just clicked one day and I started hearing it more. Now it's all I hear.
I just bought a 2018 with 20k miles on the dash. After putting about 1k miles on it, I've learned a few things about the car that others have mentioned here too.
-Radio reception is awful. I would experience frequent quality drop outs (going from HD to non-HD reception) every other minute when driving down a flat road.
-Sunroof creaks. Seemingly common issue with the size of the sunroom on the vehicle. I haven't been able to use it yet due to the winter.
-Copper trim window garnish. It was fading when I picked up the vehicle so I had a dealer detail it. It removed some of the copper coloring but it's something I can live with.
-I am using 91/93 fuel. Some readers on the Genesis forums recommended this for better engine performance.
-Some hiccups with the infotainment. It takes about 20 sec or so to boot from cold start and then about 10 more to recognize CarPlay. Sound system is great but wish there was a bit more bass (I listen to a lot of Rap / EDM but this is a reference system).
I had a v6 Rav4 and thought that was decently quick until I got into the G80. If you want it, pull the trigger. I have no regrets purchasing the vehicle used, and you'll have one of the few on the road.
Is the sunroof creak THAT bad?
I didn’t notice it in the 3.8 I test drove awhile back.
Appreciate all of the info - this is great.
It is not necessarily BAD, but it is noticeable. Backing out from my driveway onto the street will produce an audible clunk from the pano due to its size and the car being unsettled with the grade changes. It might also be due to me being in a colder climate for winter.
Hi Guys I need urgent help. I am in Canada and just saw a listing for a 2020 G80 sport for 44,988 with 31,000 kilometres on the clock. Not sure if this is a good deal especially as it is white with a grey/black interior against my dream spec of grey with black interior. I am not a fan of the 2021 redesign and heard the older infotainment in 2018 to 2019 can be slow. Help a brother with advice pls!
Assuming Canadian dollar that seems like good deal!
Thank u for the quick response Moose. It is actually CAD. Do you think I should try and squeeze out a bit more or just take it. I am thinking for a used car it should still be a bit lower. Thanks.
Wife got in a wreck and we had to get her a new car. Brand new isn’t in our price range but we picked up a 2022 GV80 with 48k miles on it. It’s beautiful. I’m super impressed, nicest vehicle I’ve ever driven.
Congrats. Bought a 2025 GV80 3.5 Prestige last summer and still absolutely love it.
I have a 2022 GV80. LOVED it till 75K miles. Even had numerous people wanting to buy it if I wanted to get another. Nothing but issues now. Been in shop for various issues that they can’t figure out (rear brakes locking up while driving down interstate, violent shaking so much it throws alignment out) No longer feel confident driving it out of town. Been out of my possession a total of 6 weeks in 2 months. Besides above issues it’s had A known rear differential issue and condensation in headlights. Thankfully I bought extended warranty but had to pay $1500 for headlight since not covered. Does not hold value either so trade is gut wrenching.
That suks. Did genesis provide at least a loaner for these 6 weeks? Why would they charge you for headlight when condensation is a known issue?
They have but only because I have an extended warranty. Not sure, but fought it and they gave me a deal on it. It’s a very expensive fix. Won’t give me a deal on other one if happens again. Told no permanent fix either as it’s a seal issue.
Thankfully my extended warranty covered the rear differential. Others have not been so lucky and many have had it replaced numerous times.
Is back in. Another shop said I had air in brake lines. Maybe why shaking.
Brakes locking sounds like ABS sensor issue to me. Every luxury brand has this problem. Replace the ABS sensors, boom, the issue is gone.
Believe me I sent them some data on that exact issue. Said since could not be replicated when they drove it nor any warning lights, they were not willing to replace any part. Both rear rotors are permanently gouged to. Not happy!!
Yes, but they seem to have a lot of issues. condensation headlights as well as rear differential issues which they have no permanent fix for either. Just keep putting replacement bad parts in for both.
I bought a 2023 about 6 weeks ago. Love it!
We got a 2025 3.5 Prestige. When Car & Driver rated these a 10/10 they knew what they were doing.
Is that the oncue on sooner?
Yes lol
Wanted to provide a full accounting of the service done on my GV80 at the first service interval. This was a new 2025 model purchased some 9 months ago and was the first time it got any service. There were good and bad things about this but I think some people might benefit from hearing my experience.
First off I want to say I’m pleased with the end result. Bottom line, they worked to take care of me and the work on the car was great.
Big hiccup: The distance. I live 2 hours from my dealership. When I got the car they assured me I’d get the full concierge service. I was assured that despite the 120 mile distance that I would get free service for 3 years, that they would drive to me a free loaner and pick up my car, work on it, then drive it back to me. They’d also do this if it needed repairs.
Apparently since I got the car, Genesis Corporate changed the distance limit to 100 miles. When I scheduled the service in the app, everything seemed ok. When the day came for the work to be done they suddenly called me. At first they said the guy driving to me wasn’t available. That got quickly clarified to be “you’re outside our 100mi service range area”.
I emailed the sales manager and explained that I was promised the distance was not going to be a problem. No upset words, no threats, just this is what I was promised. He quickly messaged back and agreed to grandfather me in and fix this. Only downside at this point is I lost the scheduled delivery/pickup time, but no big deal they got me a new time 2 days later.
Loaner was delivered at the new time, another 2025 GV80 with about 2k miles on it. Delivery and pickup itself was great, fast and well done.
End result: Work on the car was completed the next day. I was coincidentally driving to the city that weekend, so I offered to bring the loaner back to them. They offered to drive back for the swap, but I was to be there and had some scheduling conflicts in between. The loaner itself was great.
As promised my charges were 0. Nothing for the loaner, the maintenance work or anything. Returning and swapping the cars was fast, they handed me my worksheet and got my keys right away. I had a plane to catch and was worried I’d get hung up in the swap, but it was professional and took minutes.
The work done was everything at the 5k/8k intervals. Fluid changes, tire rotation, inspections, things like that. The car never had any problems so it really was just maintenance.
Aside from the distance problem, this was the luxury care I was hoping for when I got it. I bought new in part cause I wanted this service. That’s it! Thanks for reading.
Santa Monica, CA flat out refused the concierge and loaner service from day 1. This is almost 3 years now. So many good things about the cars, just not a complete experience yet.
Two oil changes ago on my G90, my dealer didn't put the oil drain plug flap back on, and I hit triple digits on the Interstate briefly afterwards. This pulled the flap down, which got destroyed later when I drove home. They never got back to me on a replacement ... just silently refunded me the charge for the service.
Last oil change, I had them replace the windshield wipers. They recommended engine and cabin air filter changes, which I declined because I can do that myself. The pin for the glovebox strut was missing, so the soft open doesn't work, they didn't close all the latches on my passenget side airbox, and the passenger side windshield wiper still had the plastic protector on it ... discovered that 1000 miles away while in Florida because it was raining.
I have a really good relationship with my service advisor though.
So rare to read good dealership experience. That's awesome
Other than the slight concierge hiccup I’d say that was a great experience. Kudos to the manager for providing solutions instead of excuses.
Yeah if you price it out, driving the extra 20 miles is a nominal cost to them and they only need to do this for 3 years with the first year almost over. I don’t drive the car enough to put any real wear and tear on it. 8500 miles after 9 months of ownership.
So I’m a very easy customer and I’d like to find reasons to keep buying genesis in the future. So far so good.
That’s good
I really am sad to leave the Genesis family, but I think it was the necessary move.
I purchased a 2021 GV80 3.5L Standard in November 2021 for $57,000 + taxes/fees.
Love love loved the car (minus the terrible gas mileage) up until my head unit complete bugged out and crashed at 8,000 miles. It took 4 trips to the dealer to fix, which as many in this thread know is not fun with shared Hyundai/Genesis dealers. With each visit it required scheduling 2+ weeks in advance to secure a loaner and the pickup/drop off services were hardly ever available. So what should have only taken a day or two dragged on for a month+. The entire head unit ended up being replaced but for the electronics to crash on a brand new luxury car with only 8,000 miles was very troubling and I became spooked about what owning the car long term and out of warranty might mean.
The good news for all Genesis owners here…I sold the car to Carvana last week for $57,144. After taxes from the original purchase I was out of pocket only $280/month during my short time of ownership.
Picked up my new M40i this morning :-)
No need for anyone to get butt hurt. I expected downvotes but the car and brand did not work for me. I was sold on a premium experience and spending multiple days in a dumpy Hyundai dealership with loaner Sonatas wasn’t cutting it. I loved the GV80 up until the issues, time for me to move on. I wish everyone best of luck with their experiences!
I dont think people should get all bent out of shape when a person switches brands. It's all good. There are many brands out there. I like Genesis, never owned a bmw, but I hope you like it. You got pics in another sub or forum?
I was sold on a premium experience and spending multiple days in a dumpy Hyundai dealership with loaner Sonatas wasn’t cutting it
I am potentially in the market for a GV70/80. Does Genesis actually give you a Hyundai as a loaner? That is kind of a shit deal if it's true for all Hyundai/Genesis shared dealerships.
I'm coming from Lexus and the worst vehicle the dealers loan me is a NX.
I took my GV70 in for service. The dealership gave me a prestige GV80 as a loaner.
I got a G70 Sport Prestige as a loaner at my dealership.
The dealer experience is highly dependent on which part of the country you live in. In the Northeast I’ve never gotten a loaner that wasn’t a mid-trim G80 when my top trim G80 goes in for service. Availability is an issue ofc but that’s a supply issue and can’t hold the dealer responsible
Lol you’re worried about what owning a Genesis might be like post-warranty but you’re not worried about what owning an BMW X3 might be like post-warranty. I’m not a Genesis stan by any means, but c’mon you’re talking like you bought a Lexus for a replacement
I’ve owned BMWs for 16 years before the Genesis with little to no issues beyond routine maintenance. GV80s have been around for 3 years, and the electronics crashed in mine at 8,000 miles so yeah I feel like there’s a big difference.
I appreciate the anecdotal experience but if you take emotion out of it all cars are component based with wear items prone to failure at one point another.
I don't question the quality of BMW or Genesis, but it's simply but subjective opinion to say one particular issue crashing on one unit of one model, on one model year is a big difference. And you are entitled to that.
You realize how rare that is though right? Of all the negative things the one overwhelmingly positive thing about Hyundai/Kia/Genesis has been their intuitive and reliable Headunits. It's so rare that they fail and odd that that is the thing that pushed you over. Also Modern BMWs are a whole different story than before. Their engines have gotten more reliable since the 2008ish era but their electronics are crazy. I own a G70 and know 2 people in my group with M340is and both have has electronic things (seats, lights) fail
it seems like OP is more concerned about experience than actual cost of ownership. the fact is Genesis is trying to compete with BMW. OP specifically mentioning that securing loaner cars at the Hyundai/Genesis dealer meant booking appointments two weeks out.
meanwhile at BMW, i drop my car off for a few hours and i'm in a loaner car or a "private shuttle" going wherever i want. most people who are doing quick turn arounds don't even leave the service centre because the customer waiting areas are so nice. huge bowl of fruit, great coffee, water, comfy chairs, ambient lighting. lots of people set up and work from there.
if you're gonna try to compete with a luxury brand, you really have to compete
I also sold my 2020 G80 - less because of the car and more because of the dealership and corporate experience.
I sent my car in for detailing & maintenance, and it came back to me with damaged upholstery. After 2 months of going back and forth with the dealership/corporate with no movement on my case, I sold my car and went to Mercedes.
Tbh it's not like I'm stoked about Mercedes the brand. My decision to buy it was mostly because I could get the features I wanted and a price I was okay with + personal connections. But once I saw I could get a decent amount on my car and just not think about it anymore, I was more than happy to get out.
Well, I've done it. I've driven all of the Genesis Models and owned almost all of them. While the G90 is in for warranty repair I have this gorgeous 2026 GV80 as a loaner for possibly the next few weeks. What's funny is that it has no loaner stickers, and Genesis said "get this man the best loaner we have". It was funny, but brand loyalty actually pays off.
If I had a bigger garage or got rid of my project cars I'd add one of these to the fleet.
I just got my gv80 a week ago. Took my first road trip last weekend. It was an amazing experience.
The g90 s meant for someone to drive you in it while the gv80 really focuses a lot on the driver experience plus comfort for others.
I disagree here. Both are nice cars but the first generation G90 drives way better for sporty or spirited driving. It also has better rear seats, but there's nothing in the front or about the way it drives in sport or manual mode that the GV80 can compete with. You can also have a way nicer sounding V8 on top of it, so the driving experience is a lot nicer in my opinion as a G90 owner.
This is really about new models as most people in this sub don’t care about a luxury vehicle that is 10 years old.
This is a really good take, well done.
They generally try to give you a comparable vehicle to what you have. So them saying "get him the best vehicle" is just them playing it up and buttering you up. Obviously it's working for them. If on the off chance your dealership doesn't try to do comparable vehicle loaners then they are not giving people white glove service.
I usually ask to try other models if they have the fleet available. Fun to try new things.
She is gorgeous.
Yeah the GV80 stole my heart when I had a BASE model as a rental for four days. My daily driver is $30k more expensive but I gotta say, the GV80 felt more refined, comfortable, and more quiet.
Hey everyone. First time posting here.
I’m interested in getting into a 2017 G80 and wanted to ask the community what I should look out got when shopping for one.
Will these be reliable longer term?
Reliable? No. But that’s where the famous warranty kicks into play. I would highly recommend securing a drivetrain warranty for the entire time you plan to own the vehicle. The 3.3 Lambda engines do not have excellent durability once they clock six-digit mileage.
For this reason also, you can expect the value of the vehicle to be worthless when you go to resell the vehicle at 150,000 miles— as it will likely need an engine replacement.
These are really neat vehicles; very comfortable and beautiful. But they are what they are: 1-2 owner disposable cars. Nothing was made to last more than 150,000 miles. Buy them new or CPO with that famous South Korean 10yr warranty, drive them until the wheels fall off, and then throw them away. For the love of all things holy, don’t buy a Genesis outside of warranty if you plan to exceed 100,000 miles.
Thanks for this! What about the 3.8 liter engine?
I had the 2015 (3.8) for 4 years and only had one mechanical issue. The catalytic converter went bad and they replaced it for free. Otherwise the car was reliable.
One thing I absolutely hated and it haunts me with my latest 2019 G80. There is a bad smell that comes from the vents when you turn it on in mild to hot climates. It has to do with the AC vent. The Hyundai folks looked at it a few times and gave up. I have to run a air freshener through the vents to get rid of it
It’s the same engine family; sorry I should have clarified that.
Same shit, different bull.
Different motor but I have a 2010 V6 Sonata with 203k miles
Never a single mechanical repair.
Just tires, brakes and regular maintenance .
Oh, and a door handle that came off.
Go figure.
That’s indeed a 3.3 Lambda. I’m glad you are having luck with yours. But for every 3.3 Lambda still on the road, you’ll find a dozen who didn’t make it that far.
I do have a lot of questions for you, though:
How many miles do you drive every month? How often do you perform oil changes? Which oil do you use? How much oil do you burn between oil changes?
Good information, what about the Tau V8? Got a '17 V8 and declined the powertrain extended warranty.
As for the purchase, very happy with my G80. Got it as a confortable cruiser for daily and long-distance weekend trips. Fits the bill perfectly, couldn't be happier!
Tau V8- same animal, but larger.
Is it too late to get that warranty?
Use full synthetic every 7,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first. Change the transmission fluid, clean the valves, and do a coolant flush (with distilled water) every 60,000 miles. And never, never allow it to overheat. All evidence is point to their lifespan being identical to the Lambda.
I’ve had the 2015 Hyundai Genesis with the 3.8L HTrac since it being brand new. I’ve put about 80,000 miles on it and it has not given me any trouble at all. With proper maintenance and oil change, it’s been carefree. Note that when you buy a used one, see if it is still the original windshield. Once I replaced my windshield, they could never get the Adaptive cruise and the lane keeping calibrated like from the factory again. It still works pretty well, but it isn’t like the factory anymore.
I’ve got a ‘22 GV70 with 22k miles that has so far been flawless with the exception of some kind of exhaust sensor issue that was fixed under warranty. I know there’s a lot of discussion here about the reliability of these vehicles, so when I was perusing the January 2024 issue of CR, I couldn’t help but notice that the GV80 was singled out as one of their least reliable models with a score of 35, with trouble spots identified as engine, brakes, suspension, electrical accessories, body hardware, climate system, and in-car electronics, which doesn’t leave much else. The GV70 scored even lower at 33 without specific trouble spots being identified, but presumably they’re similar. I was hoping this would be a buy-and-hold car but the CR information combined with the real life feedback I see posted here do give me pause.
Consumer Reports is rock solid - I’ve used it for decades to buy reliable cars and other products. I’ve also filled out their surveys on a variety of products. That being said the GV models are only out a couple of years. Mine is only 8 months old (2023 2.5 Sports Prestige), but so far so good. Keep in mind that the GVs first came out when COVID was peaking. All kinds of supply chain issues existed. Frankly I would not have bought mine if I read the January 2024 issue first, but the car is a delight to drive and very nice looking. We do have a dedicated Genesis dealer that provides only Genesis service about 10 minutes away, so hopefully that will avoid the frustration with service that so many experience.
I am in a very similar situation. A ‘23 model. No issues so far and have a service department (at least in a diff receiving building) dedicated to Genesis. Been very happy so far. Let’s hope it keeps this way
I just passed on the 25 Genesis GV80 Prestige (3.5l) and bought a BMW X5 because of the consumer reports reliability prediction
I’ve also got a ‘22 (3.5T SP) and have only out 11k miles on it so far. I had issues with the low pressure fuel pump and that was replaced under the recall. They also replaced the seat belt pretensioner under recall. No issues with the rear differential yet.
I keep my cars for a long time and was also hoping to have this one for a while. I guess I’ll take it year by year and figure out if it ever gets to where it’s having too many issues to keep. I hope it doesn’t come to that.
‘22 GV70 3.5 Sport Advanced (Cdn). Same here, seat belt pretensioner fixed last month, fuel pump to be replaced next month. No rear diff issues yet. Dealer is booked at least month in advance especially if you want a loaner, and longer if you want full valet service. Opened a brand new facility but service levels could be better. They blame staff shortages. New faces running service department, want to give them a chance to improve as they say they will…
Lol. Are you in Vegas too? Your dealer sounds like mine!
I'm not sure that is totally true about not taking money. That's what i use to think, but have become Leary
Do not recommend the GV80. Less than a year old, been in the shop twice, once leaving me stranded on the road for 2 days in Denver. Drives well, and is very comfortable, but not worth the 80K I paid for it.
See above for my original post. TLDR: My brand new Genesis GV80 is a lemon and dealership experience has been awful.
I just wanted to provide an update about what’s been going on:
I picked up my 2024 Genesis GV80 after close to two months at the shop on March 2. Ultimately an injector was replaced as well as a knock sensor. A couple of days later…guess what?!? The check engine light came right back on and the car is back at the dealership. This time they gave me a G80 as a loaner, which is OK, but barely fits the stroller of our newborn.
My wonderful friends at Genesis informed me by phone today that they are NOT able to offer be a buyback at this time! Thanks, Genesis! Mind you my car with around 3250 miles (I had overestimated in my previous post) has been at the service department pretty much since Christmas.
I have hired a Lemon Law attorney and hope to resolve the issue that way.
As people mentioned in the other thread, I fully accept that I was an absolute moron for spending 80k on a Hyundai. Won’t ever make that mistake again!
For what it’s worth, I love my $80k Genesis GV80 (Hyundai), and have had a great customer experience so far.
Sorry you got a lemon.
What option did Genesis corporate offer since the buyback was refused? I've had my fuel injector and fuel pump replaced on my GV70 at this same exact dealer in Irving. Thinking about trying Denton or Weatherford service centers on my next service appt. to see if there any differences. Neither of my appts had loaners available but corporate reimbursed me 3 months of payments and car rentals/ride shares.
They mentioned something about “assistance” or something, but I was so angry I let out that I had hired a lawyer and they bricked up after that. They had mentioned in previous phone calls that most likely a couple months of payment reimbursement would be an option, but I have no interest in that; I just want a buyback even if I lose a few thousand out of it.
That ’s not right. They are repurchasing my G70 (though I don’t know for how much yet). My G70 is mechanically fine but cosmetically not. Another guy in this sub got his car bought back over the fading chrome trim.
Had transmission issues with Ford. Vehicle was in the shop for 3 months. It was a lease and attorney got me $10k
i hope the attorney can give you the leverage needed to win this. Genesis will always say no until you get a lawyer involved.
3mos in the shop for my gv70 electric in California. Also using a lemon law attorney.
I’m going on year 3 of owning a certified preowned 2019 Genesis G80 5.0 and I decided tonight (as my car is on day 17 in the shop) that I’m moving on from the brand. Got our first kid on the way and the goal was to move into a GV80, but after another unbelievably terrible experience with their service department, I can’t in good conscience stand behind Genesis. TLDR: going to explore other SUVs
For those who want to read my midnight vent- over two weeks ago, my car started having an issue where the car would full jerk when in low speeds or reverse, the steering wheel would hard turn right on its own, and the power in the car flickered, and one time fully dying. Ah shit, another parasitic battery drain from faulty wiring like last year (made another post about my first service nightmare). Low and behold, we’re on week 3 and they can’t find a single issue even though this was a persistent issue which is why I got my car towed. This is the highest rated service center in a 30 mile radius and they still suck. Won’t provide a loaner car because my CPO is over 5 years old and 40k+ miles. To get more visibility on this, I opened a case last week with Genesis support to escalate this and my case manager has done jack squat to provide any further assistance and seems like another unnecessary layer of bureaucracy. It’s comical that a luxury car brand can treat their customers this way. I’m off to Lexus, Acura, or any other direct competitor. Wish you all the best of luck and maybe I’ll come back to Genesis once enough of y’all can validate that they’re a competent company in a decade. Thanks for your attention to this matter
Im on my 3rd Genesis sedan, 2021 G80 currently. 2013 and 2016 Genesis prior to this one. I have never had a major issue with either of the three cars. Service has been outstanding in my area (Raleigh, NC). Plan on buying a CPO G90 in two years.
I am with you friend. First and last Genesis for me. God fuckin awful service experiences across three dealers. Worst decision I ever made was getting this damn car.
For comparison I'm in my 40s and owned BMWs, VWs, Lexus, and a couple others.. but this is genuinely the absolute worst dealer/service experience and its not remotely close.
I just traded my Genesis (GV80) in three weeks ago. Free at last!
This is my third Genesis and I keep coming back to it because of its reliability and customer service. I’m sorry your experience has been so bad. I never bought a used one so I can’t speak to how they may treat me if that’s the case but definitely go to a different dealer if and when you come back. With a baby on the way I get you don’t want to have to worry about getting stuck somewhere. Good luck to you.
Where are you located?
I’m a Genesis master tech, and I promise you our dealership treats you the same if you have a 2017 (post split) to a 2026.
We don’t care we take care of you.
I’m the lead tech for Genesis here, and I do all the diag unless it’s very obvious.
NY tristate area. I opened a consumer affairs case with Genesis and can assure you I don’t feel taken care of
I’m sorry you are experiencing this then.
I can’t speak for any dealers up there, but we get Genesis from AL, GA, NC, and FL all the time due to how good we are.
I am the lead tech, and I have 2 techs under me that do the work, and I do the diag.
I'm in the Albany area and just had my first kid. Thinking of upgrading from my 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee summit to the gv80 prestige. I'm worried about the brand, can you tell me if it's this dealership here. They have good reviews but I'm nervous.
Yeah don’t be crapped out on the brand just because one dealer. The 5.0 Genesis up til 22 models had lots of weird issues.
New ones are great now that Genesis separated and is only 5% Hyundai 😂
This is the third dealership I’ve dealt with. It’s not necessarily about the car’s issues but more how the brand proactively tries to deny service covered by warranty, always finding reasons to not offer loaners, and be overall unreliable / apathetic towards customers.
Are the 3 dealers Genesis or Hyundai? I am considering a GV and the three dealers/service centers on Long Island are Genesis and have high ratings and great reviews. Big market. Lots of reviews.
That is definitely store level for sure but there’s a bigger picture.
Ya know think about it… a warranty is cool n all but really they operate just like insurance and want to pay as little if not zero for a claim… if the dealer can’t get the warranty to cover, it can seem like they’re being dicks but it’s not them nor the brand…. now when you look at recalls it’s when the issue is so obvious they have to admit they suck. But that’s car to car not a representation of a brand or how consumer goods work. My Genesis has gone 40k miles no issue. Some ive sold broke within a year.
It’s a risk you take as a consumer… sheesh ive seen Toyotas break in less than 2k miles and we pay extra for them used even though it’s still the same risk. Otherwise we’d all be driving Ferrari
TLDR: dealers have limitations… brands have warranty limitations…. Some cars break more than others
Just picked up the Genesis G80 to haul me around trouble free for the next 5 years.
I have a thing for the fastback type / fastback style sedans - with my other car being a VW Arteon.
MashAllah, the fit & finish are truly beyond its competitors in the lux-mid-size segment.
That shifter is a pure work of art 😍
many congratulations on your ! welcome to the g gang !
Thank you kind sir.
Hehe I have the extra rare 2018 G80 sport, the one with a 3.3 TT engine which is GCC specs.
I had it for 4 years now and I saw two or three similar models on the road since then.
The car looks good 😍😍😍 i heard it is reliable but the parts are expensive. The shifter is amazing
Truly, had my heart set on it the first time I saw it. Got it with the warranty & service pack - so hopefully the consumables won’t be unreasonable in terms of price.
Machaalah !I love this car !! Congrats Op
Thank you! Love the username
I was just looking for that exact car on Dubzizzle and now here is one ! Damn look at that beauty ! How’s the driving experience ?
That thing is sick!!! What made you choose this and let's just say another German comp?
Atleast for me it was the pay full trim - get the full trim that’s same as in the rest of the world. No hidden agendas, no removed trim options and what not
I would want to know this as well
2023 G80 Electrified Uyuni White. Favorite car of all time hands down. Before this I had a 2023 GLC300 4MATIC and ALL IT DID WAS GIVE ME ISSUES!!!!! Genesis for the win!!
These are sweet. I’ve got 2 e-GMP cars and the platform is fantastic. I can only imagine the same tech in the G80 works great. Plus the front grill charge port location is fantastic. Wonder if you can use Tesla superchargers yet… or if Genesis is going to provide those NACS adapters like Kia/Hyundai
The big 3 in terms of tech the 2023 EV G80 vs 2024 HI5 limited:
1: Rotary wheel for infotainment (I barely touch my screen)
2: Dedicated touch screen for the “Climate” function of the HI5
3: Proximity of the Parking camera and sensor button
I find myself using the voice commands more in the HI5 because I don’t like navigating the touch screen.
Great looking car!
I have the 2024 G80 3.5T sport. I powder coated the rims black.
Congrats! I just picked up one myself in silver! Love the car
Beauty! I love the extra grid on the bottom

This sub showed up in recommended posts and hadn’t browsed here since I made my purchase, so I guess it’s time to share my experience with it!
I’ve owned a 2018 G80 Sport for about 8 months now, and I haven’t looked back. This is my first luxury car, so nothing to really compare it to, but I absolutely love it so far!
Pros:
Cons:
If you’re looking for your first luxury car with a well rounded offering and all the bells and whistles, I think it’s hard to beat the value this car brings to the table.
All in all, it is perfect for me.
G80 Sport is a amazing car. It’s my first luxury car so I can’t compare it to the rest, but I got mine used in the low 30s and I just can’t imagine a better value.
Same, first luxury car so maybe I am biased but it's the best <3. Once I saw G80, I was sure that this is the only car that I want. :D
Got my '18 G80 a month ago and absolutely love it. Extremely comfy and even the base 3.8 V6 is enough power. I couldn't imagine how great the twin turbo or V8 would be.
Only downside is gas mileage, but I expected it going in. Working from home makes it very doable for me though.
How do you feel about your G80 now? I'm looking at one and can't decide if I should get the G80 or Z4 (I know they are different).
Downside on the gas mileage? Do you have AWD? With RWD I’m in the upper 20s in mixed driving, and hitting right at 30 doing 100% highway on road trips. For a 300hp, 4000lb car. To me that’s incredible a I have a 2016 3.8 RWD.
Oh great congrats on your car too. We have had it for 2 weeks and yes its super comfortable!! We have 3.3t v6 twin turbo so it is very powerful, even more than we need lol.
I agree that the gas mileage is the only con I can think of till now but I think its fine for cars under this category.
Was choosing between Genesis, Infiniti, and Audi. Went with the 2013 Audi A6, but those Genesis drive nice.
I'm a sucker for Audi, so I get it. To me, nothing really else compares overall with the interior, exterior and performance of pretty much any of their vehicles in any segment. With that said, I'd consider a genesis next after my current Audi. I love it but the warranty you get with the genesis is something Audi doesn't come close to. Plus, you can get similar specs for less.
I have a 2020 G70sport. Just picked up a 2018 G80sport in the rare beautiful Polar Ice colour. Literally 45% cheaper than a what they were going for brand new with just under 40,000 miles.
I love these cars and Hyundai has really stepped up their game in pretty much all regards. I’d love to have a G70 manual myself!
I wish it had a bit more hp. 268 is plenty but a nice round 300 is nice.
Got this Saturday. Uyuni white with white/glaciel blue inside. Traveled 120 miles to Macon GA to experience the Genesis purchase experience and was not disappointed. The facility is beautiful and so much better than the nasty fiber board Ikea furniture pods at my local Hyundai/Genesis dealer. My thinking was if I'm spending this much on a vehicle, I deserve the experience. Everyone there was awesome.. Loving the car.. Can't wait to hit the roads with it!
Gorgeous. I've been in my 3.5 Coupe for a little over a week. Stunning. Peppy, yet the quietest car I've ever driven.
Love the pep! It's seductive - all that power so little noise
I should mention it's a 3.5T Prestige, but I'm sure the pic indicates that to all the fans
Beautiful!! I’m in the process of negotiating this exact same model, can I ask you what your out the door price was?
I paid 61k for brand new GV80 3.5 Prestige ;)
I got 3250 off 3-4 weeks ago And 1k - conquest offer. 3.5t prestige.
I'm not sure I can tell and I have the 2.5 prestige. But these are great cars so congrats! Had mine for about 6 months now and I still love it.
Exactly what I'll be looking at shortly. Big question is the room in the back with the seats all folded.
How many bodies do you need to hide in there? 😂
Congrats!!!! You are going to love it!
So beautiful!
I've driven lots of cars, both for work and in my stewardship. Owned a few German cars too. My Genesis has the best sound system I've ever had on any car. It's not perfect, but I find it well balanced and very crisp. Enjoy, great car and lots of fun!
I will be shopping around for a new car soon and Genesis G80 is one of the cars on my list. For those of you have owned or still own the vehicle, particularly the year models referenced above, how reliable have they been so far?
Thank you,
Had the 2019 G80 3.8 for four years, no issues. Smooth ride, dependable through daily driving and very long road trips. Suspension is smoother than the G80 3.5T
Still recommend a 2019 g80?
How many miles on odometer when you got the car and at the time you sold it ?
Got the car with 13 miles on it and sold it with around 70k. Owned if for about 3 years. Maintenance was done at third party shops (jiffy lube and Firestone)
I have a 2018 Hyundai genesis 3.8 awd and it has been a wonderful and reliable car.
2018 G80 Sport with no issues at all.
Only non-regular service it's ever needed was when a freaking mouse chomped on some wires close enough to a sensor (g force I think) that they had to replace the sensor + wiring harness rather than just patch the broken wires. $700 mouse repair, ouch.
How many miles are on your Genesis?
Pretty low -- 70K miles at the moment. It's basically only used for 200-mile highway trips between two locations that I bounce between.
It does wear tires pretty fast relative to my other prior cars and it's more work to deal with tire swaps and rotations when the front and rear tires are different sizes. But I do drive fairly fast. First car I've had that does not really need dedicated snow tires -- the AWD and good all season tires are perfect year round. The fact that I use all-season tires year round probably explains why it feels like wear is higher. My other cars I always kept and swapped a balanced set of 4x snow tires every season
This is my second one, but I wouldn’t say it’s any less or more reliable than others. Modern manufacturing and technology always will have defects and unexpected failures. Just the nature of the beast. There are some issues I experience more so in this model than my last which is the sunroof creaks occasionally.
Originally I had a 2015 3.8 v6 and went about 145k before it was wrecked. I ended up replacing the front upper & lower control arms around 110k after some serious pothole damage due to the vehicle having stretched tires when I bought the car at 80k
just bought a 2017 with 58K! I'll update you!
I've had a 2016 G80 for 4 years now, we bought it ex- police pursuit, with 100k on the clock. We're at 225kms now, mostly country miles and aside from servicing all we've had to replace is disc's and rotors. Before this we had a 2015 Santa Fe Highlander, which we bought new and had it till the wife wrote it off...thus, the reason I bought the Genesis. Both car's at the time held the highest safety rating here in Australia and a rep for being pretty flawless. I've read a fair amount of negativity towards the Genesis, but I'm quite sure those who rag on them have never actually owned one. In my books they are a truely phenomenal car, they look awesome, they are fast, they handle better than a car half their size, they are pretty economical for a car that size we average 8.2 in ours. We're about to put it in the workshop and give it a birthday..... I will always own one I reckon. 😁👍
What engine did the Genesis police cars use? I did notice that they use it in various police departments in Australia.
Last week I picked up a G80 my wife loved it so much she forgoed the BMW X7 and got the GV80. Genesis should get more recognition for the cars they put out. Class inside and out.
Genesis > bmw any day of the week I absolutely love what genesis is doing.
Any notice of different interior material quality b/w the G vs the GV of same line up?
G and the GV are pretty much the same quality for the 80 but very different for the 70. The G70 interior has not been overhauled in a while so the GV70 is much better
Tbh I have not been in the GV80 enough yet to have an opinion. Also the GV80 is a 2025 and the G80 is a 2023 so it has the updates that have done over 2yrs and it's a highest trim vs the G80 being the lowest trim lvl. 2 different cars with the great features still. I will mention that my wife was telling me that the gv80 has the seat feature that massages you while you're driving and the seats are just more comfortable and that's kind of figured because of the trim and yr level difference. Jumping from either vehicle still feels great.
Should have stopped them from mounting the front plate bracket
It was there before we ever saw the car and state law requires front and back so it needs fo be there anyway
My state does too and i wouldnt let them put it on my car. I'll take my chances
>forgoed
this is actually "forwent" believe it or not
Well I'll be .. I've never said that before
I got dame setup, but mine are both blue
This car is really nice, and I love the bigger cabin, but the 2.5T in this one is not the business. I’d be interested to try the 3.5 which I have not driven in any of my loaners, but I think I’d still end up missing the sportiness of the 3.3.
I will say though my favorite feature is the fabric between the seat and the center console.
I had a g80 3.3 for a loaner and was pleased by it's drive. It surprised me how quick it was, had the huge display and massage seats. I liked it.
I loved my G80 but traded it towards the G70. It always drove a bit large (land yacht-ish) for my tastes.
Also went from a 2021 G80 to a G70. No regrets at all but there are a couple things that I miss from the g80 such as ambient lighting, larger radio, better hda and of course extra room.
Going from a G90 to a G70 SP myself here soon
What year G90?
I went from a 2022 GV70 to a 2023 G70 (actually had the GV70 two years). I do still miss the interior on the GV70, it's leagues above its price point. There isn't hard plastic anywhere in that interior, all of it is either leather or Alcantara. The interior design was unique too.
I mean I don't think any actual leather is in the interior either
G80 is a lot heavier, but gd its a beauty
I have the 3.5T also in Siberian Ice. That’s my baby… she’s iconic.
The wife and I have already been on a few roadtrips in these first months, and have enjoyed each trip!
How many miles?
We purchased it with about 21.500 miles and now have about 28.500
Very nice! I’ve got the same in the Matte grey. Does yours have the 4 seat config or is it the standard with bench seat in the back?
Yeah, we’ve got the 4-seat version too. It’s great! 😁
Dope man. They’re pretty damned sweet. Love how they appointed the seating on these particular models. PLUS, ours a pretty limited configuration - something like 500~sh produced. 🤘🏽
Curious - how much did it set you back?
Very good. What is the interior color?
It has the Ultramarine Blue/Dune interior with nappa leather
Gorgeous. By far the best looking suv on the road. I'm too afraid of the Hyundai dealership horror stories to buy one. Lol
What did you cross shop it against?
TL;DR I cross shopped it against random sports cars
I wasn't originally even considering an SUV; I'd never driven one and I figured it would be too big and cumbersome to park and drive in SF. Well, now I don't live in SF proper, so the traffic and parking situation is better, and I had the chance to test drive the GV80 after looking at a 911, Lotus Evora, LC 500 (this will be my next car), AMG GT, and then a 2022 G70. I know that makes literally no sense to most people since most of those cars are different in many ways, but I really just wanted a "nice" car, without much care about the badge or class of car it was.
I asked to sit in the GV80 after my G70 test drive not expecting to like it, but I immediately fell in love with the massive amount of space compared to the cramped Evora and G70. I'm not a small guy at 6'1 240 lbs., so the extra room made me spring for this over a small sports car, considering this would be my first and only car for now. I briefly looked at some 2021 GLE's, but to get anywhere close to the amount of options of the GV80, I was looking at $90k, which I couldn't justify over the GV80 that looks better and is cheaper.
Dude are you me? I had the same mindset going in to buy cars and nothing made sense. Also I went to look at g80 and found gv80 instead and loved the space and immediate purchase. I’m very happy with my final decision tho because I feel the gv70 would be too small (exterior) compared to other cars. The gv80 however has a presence like no other in the street! I got a silver one but wish I had the higher trim (I didn’t notice mine didn’t have some features).
Well my friend, your car shopping is best described as a Jackson Pollock painting! I'm assuming around $65,000? Did you consider the Porsche Macan or the Tesla Model Y Performance?
You did settle on a very beautiful car.
Congrats, absolutely beautiful! How do you like the ride quality?
It feels great to me, especially in the drivers seat I don't have any complaints. Then again, highway 101 in the bay area isn't too bad in most parts, and my only other car was a 2007 Sentra in College a few years ago, so anything would've ridden better than that
Which dealership did you go to? We got our '19 G80 Sport from Stevens Creek
Looks so pretty! How does the interior feel like?
The interior is sublime, honestly. Even though only the Prestige trim has Nappa leather, the faux leather still looks and feels superb, the infotainment is much better than the LC 500 I sat in, and everything else just feels... luxurious? I don't know how else to describe it, but the interior makes me feel like I'm in a much more expensive car than I am. Granted 70k isn't nothing, but it's also not the 90k that a similarly optioned GLE 4MATIC would have costed me. Oh, and the drivers seat can give you a FUCKING MASSAGE
What??? A massaging driver's seat? This is the way
Awesome!
Very much so.
Such a great car for the price
yes
My 4 year lease was up in Dec this year and Genesis made me an offer in March to pay out my final payments and give me 1% off and an additional $1000 off a new Genesis.
I was already eyeing the 2026 GV70 3.5T as I needed a little more space. I put in my preorder in April and the car went into production by May and shipped out of Korea by end of May. It arrived 2 weeks early and picked it up 2 days ago.
So far definitely love the upgrades in luxury. But I do miss the "sportiness" sound of the G70. Was kinda hoping that it would have a similar note in Sport+ but it's a bit more tame sounding overall. Also cheesed that North America Genesis didn't painted the calipers. Been considering painting mine orange to match the seatbelts.
Planning on ceramic coating for sure. On the fence with full front end PPF. I know it's strongly recommended for matte paint but this car is on a 5 yr lease (which Genesis will let me opt out of after 4 yrs). I don't drive much and I also I don't want to drop too much coin on this car that's not being kept. I also paid for the walk-away lease protection which covers me for damages under $7500 on return.
Already bought some speaker covers for the door which add a nice touch. Added carbon fiber shifter extenders and a Mandalorian push button cover that matches the look of the paint lol. I also applied a ceramic leather protection on the seats.
I’m very confused by the lease terms. Are you certain you didn’t finance the vehicle?
Nope, just leased. Lower payments and I return the car at the end. I'm in Canada btw.
So the monthly cost would have to be low enough that after 60 payments, it’s still financially wise to not own the vehicle. Do you mind sharing your math on your deal?
I didn't even know 4 year and 5 year leases existed haha. Congrats though! Looking fresh!
I love it plan to get one next year for my birthday gift
That light interior really makes the access lights pop! I have a back interior so it’s not as noticeable. What color do you have yours set to? I have a ‘22 so the color options are probably more limited.
I use the option that links it to the drive mode. But it's on full brightness. I sorta wanted a lighter color partially for that so you'd see it more.
Ayyyyy
I am considering a Genesis GV70 to replace my aging Ford Fusion. I love everything about it, but I am not familiar with Genesis’ reliability. I have heard mostly good things, but have heard some complains as well. If I plan on keeping the car for 5-7 years, what can I expect as far as reliability goes? How does it compare to competitors such as the Acura RDX or Mazda CX-5? Thanks.
I have a gv80 and have only noticed small tech hiccups. From the groups I follow - the reliability for the vehicles is generally good, it’s the service that usually gets complaints.
As a comparison I was following Lincoln groups since I was thinking of getting an aviator… don’t get a Lincoln. The amount of reliability complaints was really disheartening
I’ve had my GV80 for a few months now and have also noticed some odd tech issues, the most recent of which where the car slams on the brakes when I’m in reverse almost as if I’ve hit something. Have you found a software update that the dealer can apply takes care of your issues ?
Same I’ve had this issue and it just shuts off the engine
I would have service look at it, could be a bad sensor. Worst I’ve had with my sensors is warnings of a close object when I’m at a stop light. Even though the nearest car is 5 ft away. Washing the car also solves that.
Thanks for sharing this info. I am considering the aviator as well but now thinking about doing some more research...
The sensors are hyper sensitive. Collision warnings and emergency braking are common even with nothing in front of you if the sensors are a little dirty outside. You can turn them off but they’ll switch back on when you restart the car. Also the CarPlay isn’t Bluetooth and you often have to unplug and plug your phone back in to turn on.
My anecdotal experience at 13k miles - no issues so far
There isn't much data about it since it's a relatively new model. I personally haven't had any major issues with my G70. I would buy new and not really worry about it. If something comes up let the warranty handle it.
I’ve had a GV80 for 6 months now. Only complaint is the dealership service lacks the service that should be provided with a luxury vehicle.
The G80 Sport still looks incredible
Congrats! I didn’t get my first Genesis until I was 40. Glad that you can afford a beautiful car at 23!
To be fair, without knowing your age, Genesis might not have even existed till you were 40
True, though it existed as a model of Hyundai (which is how I bought my first one), the G80 equivalent in 2015. Back when the G90 equivalent was called Equus.
I had this exact model, got it back in 2019. Loved it!
Classic lbc baby! Mine’s a 5.0. People are always surprised how quick it is.
Even the 3.8 gets up there!
Yeah.
Nice, i was driving a rust bucket shit box at 23
Just closed on my new GV80 3.5t Prestige. Just wanted to share because I’m so excited. I hope everyone who wants one of these beautiful cars gets the chance to get one!
I JUST traded my '22 GV70 for '25 GV80 Prestige with the Earth Brown interior and I can't get enough of this car; I drove around in it for fun for a couple hours after I bought it.
It drives unbelievably smooth, the cabin is whipser-quiet, the digital key 2 is a game changer, and thank God for the door lock/unlock sensors on the rear door handles.
I know the new large screen is a point of contention for folks, but I will say it's very snappy and refined and ties into the style of the interior very well.
I'd highly recommend for anyone on the fence!
The ability to lock/unlock using the rear door handles is one of my favorite features of the 2025 GV80 and G80!
Got a '25 3.5 Prestige last week. Fabulous vehicle. Only thing a disappointment to me is map.
Let us know how it drives…and how it does on gas. Been thinking of getting one myself. Can’t decide between the G80 or GV80
I had the same dilemma. Went with the GV80. So glad I did. Much more practical for me. I use the larger trunk space all the time. My next car may be the coupe.
Congrats! I test drove one and really liked it, although it's almost identical to the first generation which I'd rather get for half the price personally, and I prefer a display built into the car not added in after. I was also told that nice green color isn't available on the new model which was disappointing.
There has only been 1 generation of the GV80.
what would 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 called? or is a generation when theres a new design?
What do you mean a display built into the car vs added after?
I think they mean the display looks as though it’s embedded in the dash or protruding from it rather than it was placed on top of the dash. Just my take.
Love my new 2025 GV80
I pick up mine on Monday or Tuesday next week. Same spec as yours in Norr green and tan int. I cant fricking wait!
Hello all! I made the mistake of test driving this GV80 coupe while waiting for my Santa Fe to be serviced and I’m smitten! Definitely need one to by my gift for finishing graduate school next year😍 has anyone gotten good lease deals on these? Or are those days gone?
Jeez 90k? I thought genesis was supposed to be a cheaper luxury alternative to like mercedes and bmw but at that price point you might as well go for mercedes and bmw. Still a nice car
Why? Genesis has more features and a lower cost to maintain. It’s a luxury car with more reliability than German brands. Makes no sense to go BMW or Mercedes unless you’re trying to impress people who don’t know much about cars.
It is because everything else is more expensive and requires extra option payments to match what Genesis includes so the German alternatives are still more expensive unless you want a base BMW vs a loaded Genesis.
Agree. Although really, at this point the G might be a better car, for ~90 I’m still getting a BMW or MB.
Right. You can get a Bmw x4 m for around 80k or Amg Gle coupe for around the same price. I hope Genesis doesn’t end up pricing itself as its competitors..
It doesn't make sense as a fully equipped G90 with the same engine, way better interior, and e supercharger costs $115k CAD. That's just $83k USD for their flagship car, and I'm seeing people here looking to pay more for a GV80...
I'm surprised too because it's about that much in Canadian dollars. It should cost a lot less in USD. Regardless, a slightly used non Coupe is almost the same car for half the price. These recent graduates with no financial sense are welcome to lose tens of thousands of dollars so I can buy one later.
Hyundai has always preferenced Canadians with pricing and features. Not entirely sure why. But having worked there years past, it was the same then
It's so beautiful I don't even want to test drive that thing.
The coupe on top of everything else? You done fucked up. Got damn that’s a beautiful car.
Right?! I’ll happily make that expensive ass car payment at this point😩
I have a 2025 one and every time i ride it I'm like "worth it"
genesis gv80 long term review
Key Considerations for a Long-Term Review of the Genesis GV80:
Build Quality and Design: The GV80 is praised for its luxurious interior and high-quality materials. Over time, assess how well the materials hold up against wear and tear.
Performance: Evaluate the engine options (2.5L turbocharged I4 and 3.5L twin-turbo V6) for reliability and power delivery. Long-term reviews often highlight the smooth ride and handling characteristics.
Technology and Features: The infotainment system, including the 14.5-inch touchscreen and driver assistance features, should be user-friendly and reliable. Check for software updates and any tech issues that may arise over time.
Comfort and Space: The GV80 is known for its spacious interior and comfortable seating. Long-term comfort, especially for long drives, is an important factor to consider.
Maintenance and Reliability: Research the long-term reliability ratings and any common issues reported by owners. Genesis offers a strong warranty (10 years/100,000 miles), which can be a significant advantage.
Fuel Efficiency: Monitor real-world fuel economy over time, as this can vary from the EPA estimates based on driving habits and conditions.
Takeaways:
Recommendation: If you're considering the GV80 for long-term ownership, it's advisable to test drive it extensively and explore the warranty options. This will help ensure that it meets your expectations for comfort, performance, and reliability.
