TL;DR: The BMW X7 is praised for its luxurious interior, powerful engine options, and impressive driving dynamics. However, potential buyers should be aware of high maintenance costs, common issues with the transfer case, and limited cargo space when all seats are in use. Overall, it’s a strong contender in the luxury SUV market, especially for those who prioritize comfort and performance.
The BMW X7 offers a range of powerful engines, including the B58 inline-six and the N63 V8, both known for their reliability and performance. Owners have reported that the B58 engine provides ample power and tuning potential, making it one of the best engines BMW has produced in recent years 1:2. The driving experience is enhanced by features like rear-wheel steering and air suspension, which contribute to a smooth ride and agile handling, making the X7 feel smaller than it is
1.
Many users have noted that the X7 excels in various driving conditions, including winter weather, thanks to its xDrive system 2:1. However, some owners have expressed concerns about the fuel consumption, particularly with the V8 variant, which can be quite thirsty during city driving
6:1.
The X7's interior is often described as one of its standout features, offering a spacious and luxurious environment with high-quality materials and advanced technology. The seating is comfortable, accommodating up to seven passengers, although some users have pointed out that the second and third rows can be cumbersome to adjust 3:1
6:1.
However, the cargo space is limited when all seats are in use, with only 12.8 cubic feet available behind the third row, which has been criticized as inadequate for a vehicle designed to carry families 3 (0:22). The infotainment system, while feature-rich, has received mixed reviews due to its complexity and occasional software glitches
2 (0:14).
While the X7 is generally considered reliable, there are notable concerns regarding long-term ownership. Common issues include problems with the transfer case, particularly in models from 2019 to 2021, where symptoms may include jerking or shuddering during acceleration 2 (0:31). Additionally, the shark fin antenna has been reported to leak, leading to electrical issues if not addressed promptly
2 (2:04).
Maintenance costs can be significantly higher than average, with oil changes costing around $250 and tires priced at approximately $800 each 7:4. Many owners recommend purchasing an extended warranty to mitigate these expenses, especially as the vehicle ages
7:3.
The BMW X7 is a luxurious and capable SUV that excels in comfort and performance, making it a strong choice for families seeking a premium vehicle. However, prospective buyers should weigh the potential for high maintenance costs and common reliability issues against the benefits of owning such a well-appointed vehicle. For those who prioritize luxury and driving dynamics over practicality, the X7 remains an appealing option in the competitive luxury SUV market.
I recently replaced my 2008 X5 bought new after keeping it for 17 years, drove about 115k miles. One VANOS Solenoid ($200), Water pump ($1000), Valve Cover ($800) and radiator ($800) were the only major services. Avoid the $ealer, they wanted $8500 for the VANOS solenoid issue.
The X7 is the most luxurious BMW ever, what a ride, especially with DHP and Air Suspension. The rear wheel steering makes it drive like a much smaller vehicle. Absolutely love it. It has pretty much all the packages including B&W, except leather and executive (didn't want sky lounge moonroof). Hope to keep it as long as the X5.
Nice. How is it?
Looking at 2022-ish X7 40i
Is the B58 enough power?
B58 is one of the best engines BMW has made in years. Massive power. Massive potential. OEM has plenty power to drive you around but the tuning potential is insane. I have a 45e stage 2 that runs 566hp /780nm as my daily. Zero issues, have had it for almost 5 years now.
What tune do you have? Does it have to be 45e specific or can it take 40i tunes? I could never figure that out from my research.
B58 has plenty of power, I trust the BMW inline 6, they have had them in production forever and B58 benefits learnings from their collaboration with Toyota, cant be a better match combination of Toyota reliability with BMW Dynamics.
It has nothing to do with Toyota
It’s plenty of power, starting on 2023 model year they received the newer 48v hybrid b58 variation which added 40 more HP.
We owned a 2022 and traded it for a 2023. Just keep a watch out on options for 2022 model year, they were still dealing with chip shortage and some things were missing from our build. Like wireless charger (phone heater 😀), even many out there that had the base sound system as HK was limited.
X7 is so nice, you will love it.
Massive upgrade bruh. My brother had. 2006 330i and got rid of it to get a 23’ m340i. I assume this had the same engine. Those engines are bulletproof!!!
Very nice swap. Beautiful color on the x7
Congrats! Good to hear that you didn’t had any really major repairs during your ownership!
Thanks, E7x were built like a tank, the 2 major weaknesses were the electric water pump and the valve cover (gasket). I think pretty much every owner went through those at least once.
So the winters locally have been relatively mild. These last couple days we did get several inches of snow and the X-7 performed like a champ! She didn’t spin or hesitate the X-Drive kept motoring right through the hills of Western Pennsylvania. I am Really impressed with BMW’s abilities in the ugly weather. All that being said there’s one issue that is freaking me out and that is the grime and salt and crap that is collected on my Bimmer. This is literally driving me crazy thank goodness for the get-go unlimited wash pass.
Especially this last week in the Burgh. Xdrive for the win
Gotta love it !
probably the best allrounder-car sold today. Mercedes GLS and BMW X7. They are just so good in everything
Love seeing the PGH representation. My G42 M240i has been hibernating the last couple weeks!
That X7 is a beauty
Thanks 🙏 love that vehicle
When I had my sedans and convertibles, I never drove them much past November I always put them away until spring
Excellent vehicle to lease. But between the V8 and air suspension that is not a long term keeper.
Yea these things will be $5k in 10 years fasho lol
> We like: it has all the things you expect from an expensive car.
> We dislike: it is, in fact, an expensive car.
Must be some AI generated article written based on r/cars commentary.
I kid I kid
This is why using smaller turbo engines makes sense over a v8. The navigator makes the same hp yet is several mpg more efficient.
> The navigator makes the same hp yet is several mpg more efficient.
yes, it's just that black and white...
the navigator is significantly bigger, heavier, and still is more efficient.
As usual, buy the straight six model
For the X5 for sure, but on the X7 it seems like at least for a few the V8 wouldn’t be a terrible option. I think for a luxury car, you should never have to really wind the engine out for powerful acceleration.
Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone here. After weeks (ok, months 😅) of going through the discussions, comparisons, and advice on this subreddit, I finally pulled the trigger on my BMW X7.
This group really helped me think through the details—everything from trim choices to warranty tips to what to watch out for at the dealership. Appreciate all the shared experiences and knowledge in here—it made the process way smoother.
Excited to finally join the X7 club!
Looks just like the one we just bought. We love it. Got white interior, 6 seats and Exec pkg. Cant see yours but we love the look of it!!
It’s amazing. We ended up getting bench seat for more seating. How’s the executive package? We got drivers assistance pro and parking packages. Still figuring out how to self park it in our two car garage haha
The technology is challenging - we also got driver assistance and parking assist and we are scared to use them 90 days in!!
Best car I've ever owned!
I am realizing why now
Congrats! Did you get an extended warranty?
Yes I did! While I love these BMWs - I do not like the trouble they are when they enter high mileage territory
I hear you! Was it through the dealer or third party? If latter, would you mind sharing which one? I need to get one :)
Nice - a Storm Trooper!
Sure is! Very smooth in the harshest on rain storms
Would also fit right in as a member of the galactic empire Stormtrooper
Surprised they still offer those wheels
Hey guys, so I have owned this X7 for about 5-6 months and around 10K miles since new
I must say for around town it’s a monster and does day to day like it’s nothing. When it comes to comfort on the highway it checks all the boxes
Still enjoying it
Just as wide as the x5. No one complains about that.
Also, you can push a button and make it lower.
I complain about the X3
Push the button all you want, still not as low as a wagon.
These are amazing, best luxury SUV (next to RR). Period.
RR is infinitely more capable off road, and has way more valet cachet, but the X7 drives better and is more practical.
All around so comfortable… and in regards to a Range Rover, I think it takes the cake tbh
My wife’s second favorite car, behind our old E63 wagon.
MB messed up by not taking 6” from the cargo area and placing it between the front and back seats, IMO.
too big. after all, it clearly no longer fits on one parking spot lol
Exactly
Such a tank on road trips
All the v8 range rovers have bmw powertrains now
That’s why there is x5 for those who don’t want such large car. And x3 x4 for those who think x5 is even too big.
But I agree even my g31 touring 5 series is 4950mm and it is LARGE, barely fits. So I don’t know where people park cars that are 5200mm
With adaptive ride etc it does so well tbh
That’s what did. I love my 21 X7. Bought it CPO and couldn’t be happier. The car is a beast!
How do you feel vs other SUVs? Looking to purchase a 3 row suv and want to know comfort, luxury, space, reliability, etc.
Thanks.
I searched for 4 months on a luxury SUV to replace my Q7 TDI. I looked into the X7 after I realized the newer Qs were trash and the GLS was overvalued for what it was.
My gf wanted a GLE350 and I found the X7 to be a nice blend of size and luxury. I got my CPO with everything but DAP which is what I wished I could had but Jax is lacking.
I just did a 10 hour trip and got 25 mpg at 75. The air suspension is great and it was smooth with 5 people in the car.
My only gripes would be the run flat tires are $$$ and loud but that’s because I have the 21”.
Are there any good reasons to get the X7 over the X5 if you don’t need 7 seats?
X5 is fairly cramped in the second row and the X7 has more cargo room. X7 also has a few more premium finishes inside and has air suspension as standard. Currently have two X5s and plan to replace the older one with a X7. My sister has one and it’s definitely a step above the X5.
X7 will ride smoother due to the longer wheelbase and is better insulated so less road noise (source: I have both)
Rented one and drove it from Philly to Austin and then up to OK and back to Philly. It was big and easily hold 7 people in luxury. I averaged 25MPG driving it hard - really enjoyed it. Drove for 12 hours some days and never felt in pain from sitting so long. Liked the active suspension, heads up display and the engine power. “Speed and Power”
Do you want a bench or captains chairs? Drive assist pro? Comfort and luxury, boxes checked. Doesn’t drive like a land yacht. Reliability. Don’t get a v8. Do the 40i, get one that’s optioned out.
Used car market is tanking. If a dealer has a car priced at 88 and they sell it for 82, they’re absolutely awful at their job and their used car manager needs to go. The days of having massive front ends are gone.
Source: I work at a dealer. I’m happy to answer questions without bias and steer you in the right direction. Feel free to DM me!
Hey pulling up an old post but hoping your still willing to provide soem guidance. Am in the market for an x7 and was really trying to target around 60-65k. Any words of wisdom on how to go about finding the right one. Is there value in paying premium for the newer model (refresh)? What options are a must? Haven’t bought a car before so any guidance appreciated.
Hi, why not the V8 versus the 40i?
We had a '21 X7 M50i.
Luxury/comfort - fantastic. Loved that aspect of the car. The only downside in my opinion were the second and third rows having to move themselves in and out of position which can be annoying if not done correctly.
Engine - powerful, eats through gas if you get the V8 and do lots of city driving.
Reliability - we had several minor issues throughout ownership. Nothing that would prevent me in the future from buying again, but this occurred during COVID so a couple items literally took months to arrive from Germany. Also the tires are very expensive, not necessarily a deal breaker for us, however, during COVID the back set of tires took two fucking months to get in stock.
Overall, we loved the car but the crazy expensive tires + gas had us move on to the iX (also a great car once you get over the grille).
You're saying the cost of tires and gas, probably a few hundred bucks per month average, is what bothered you enough about your $100k suv and made you replace it with yet another nearly $100k suv🤣
What were the issues that came up on your car?
Absolutely not. It’s the age of the internet. Yes, they have some profit on the front end of their car. But if they had enough to give you 6k off and still make a profit, they’d never sell a car. 1-2k off may happen. If you ask for 6, I won’t even waste time with a rebuttal. I’ve been selling bmw for 3 years.
I noticed BMW X7's are fairly available on the used car market for some steep discounts compared to the original purchase price (100K ish). Would these make good used cars or is the maintenance too much? They are beautiful SUVs. I know the parts and maintenance are expensive but I would imagine its a durable vehicle given its a SUV.
You assume it’s a durable vehicle given its a suv? It’s a $100k bmw with a ton of electronic parts. The xdrive40i has the b58, great motor but if you’ve never had a German car before I’m warning you. It’ll cost 2 times as much as a Toyota/lexus or Honda suv to maintain. A few thousand a year in maintenance costs. If you can afford that or you’re a diy mechanic, then go for it.
With B58 I don't see how the maintenance will be expensive. N63 yeah, but B58 should be cheap
Engine wise yes. But imagine how many electronics are on a $100k x7. My 2006 x5 currently has 3 bad window regulators a bad idle control a bad transfer case actuator. And it’s waaaay less complex than a x7. Once that car gets past 100,000 miles I’m pretty sure you’ll have a lot of expensive electronic fixes. The cost to repair 1 window regulator on the x7 is $800+ if he doesn’t plan on having it more than a few years sure. But long term maintenance cost will kill his wallet.
They’re still more expensive to maintain compared to the other brands. It’s all BMWs they’re all going to cost more than other brands but you’re right the b58 will be cheaper to maintain due to higher reliability
Buy an extended warranty. I don't have an X7 but I bought a used m550. I purchased an extended warranty which has already paid for itself. I know it doesn't cover oil changes and new tires but if anything breaks, you'll be happy you had the warranty.
did you happen to buy yours from bmw directly? like the ultimate care+ they offer, or did you happen to get one from a third party?
Yes I bought the car and warranty from BMW.
I have one, a 50i and it’s amazing. But, get out your wallet. $250 an oil change (11 quarts), $799 a tire (they only last 20K mi), and find a good non-dealer mechanic. Car is a tank and lightning fast but its not a basic car and requires high end care.
This is correct. Also we’ve had quite a few minor issues pop up. Wife still loves it though.
What issues have you had with your x7?
Depends on what you consider to be “good used cars” and how much maintenance is “too much.” Your question is subjective and doesn’t warrant a response having any value.
What are your current cost?
Been looking for a X7 for a while, mainly because we are a family of 7 and I've been driving BMWs for the last 11 years and love how they ride. Its a 2022 with M sports package and executive package, the two main things I was looking for. $43,600 out the door price. It's sitting at 63,000 miles but Carfax showed great service records.
Question though, do I go ahead and change the transfer case and differential fluids? That's probably the biggest main concern I've been reading about these cars.
Just picked up a 2020 BMW X7 40i with only 12k miles — feels practically brand new! I also added the grille clips, and honestly I think they look great on it. If you haven’t yet, I’d definitely recommend grabbing the BimmerCode app along with a compatible OBD reader. It unlocks a ton of coding options and lets you really personalize your X7. Totally worth it.
How in the world did you find a 2020 with that low of miles 😂, that awesome though! I hope you enjoy it! I'll definitely grab that app, thanks!
I live in Hawaii so we don’t accumulate that much miles per year but 12k miles in 5 years is very low even for Hawaii standard.
Looks good! I just bought the same model, gray.. Make sure you change your oil every 5000 miles, NOT 10,000 like BMW says.
Nonsense. 10k miles is totally fine.
Have you seen the difference between 0 miles, 5k miles, and 10k miles in oil?
I run my 2018 5 series like it’s my dream car, because it is. I demand a lot out of my 5 series and because of that I do my best to maintain it. I’d do a pms every 1k miles if I could afford it. High performance cars are maintained as often as possible, not as often as needed, so that they can keep performing at a high level.
I suppose you can stay on the 10k schedule so long as you baby your BMW and don’t push it. But where’s the fun in that?
I second the oil change every 5,000 miles. I do a pms at the dealer every 10k, and I have the oil changed at my favorite indy specialist every 5k in between to save a little money. Lol
Agree with this too. I’ve got a 2018 X5 50i and 80k on the clock now. I do oil changes every ~5k miles and also gives my indy shop a chance to look everything over front to back. She’s still running strong and my wife steals the keys over her Audi every chance she can get. Needless to say I think an X7 is in our near future.
Change all the fluids. I did and it runs like new… so I think😂. Seriously it runs beautifully imo. Enjoy🤙🏽
Which fluids other than oil change, brake fluid, coolant, transfer case, and front/rear diff fluid?
Yeah man. All of the above. Coolant will be a process. This thing takes a lot of coolant. I never did it before so make sure everything that is for this truck is for this truck. Order everything from FCP Euro. They have everything you need🤙🏽
That grill is $30 clip ons from Amazon. My wife recently got an x7 and did this upgrade. Looks pretty cool.
When I started my search, I wasn’t even considering the X7. But I test-drove one, was blown away by the driving experience and tech, and bought it the next day!
I love how everyone’s like “congrats, I hate it” 😂.
Congrats OP, I do not hate the X7, I love it (especially when second row captain chairs).
The interior is more than fine, the exterior is ass though.
It’s ok to be critical of BMWs. Especially when they look like a pig squinting with its mouth open.
Congrats they are great and look good to me. Let the haters hate. Plenty of cars I will not drive that others love to each their own.
The wheels look good
😂😂😂😂😂😂
🤣
Congrats! Kinda looks like a genesis w the front with those headlights. It's sleek
Why are the headlights dissected into two?
Eyebrow spec.
Ask the designers 🤣
I am interested in getting a used 2019-2020 X7 with 20-40k miles as a kid hauler…any known issues I should be worried about? From what I have read these are solid cars, but it makes me nervous.
Did you look at X5 ? When we were buying a family hauler last year, we looked at both X7 and X5 and decided on X5, because it is very similar to X7 in terms of tech and features and is just the perfect size.
If you have to have 3 rows, then X7 is the way to go.
I used to work at a bmw dealership as a technician and the only thing that seemed to be a common thing that broke was the 3rd row seats being able to fold down. When the actuator breaks there's no way for you to get them down other than finding the cord and pulling them manually which requires a lot of trim being removed.
Thank you!
By common I meant it happened 4 times. Which is a lot for a car that's been out for 3ish years. But other than that the car seemed to be pretty durable.
Ps: the bottom section of the tailgate always has squeaks after a while. You can fix it easily with Velcro tape where it's rubbing, just don't brake the clips holding it together.
If I am not mistaken, the x7s are similar to the sedan 7s.. they have a lot of niche high end newer/experimental tech (see the new x7) that if you do have issues, will be costly to repair or replace as the may not be mass produced for cost efficiency. Great, comfortable and safe ride to be sure. Gear-heads ought to chime in soon. Good luck and have a great day!
Thank you! Yes, similar to 7 series I think. When I test drove one, it didn’t seem that advanced, though that is a qualitative measurement. Appreciate you responding.
My wife is considering a X7, 2020-2021 with miles less than 40k. In the 5 years it's been in production are there any ongoing issues with the model? She'll more than likely be looking at the 40iAWD.
I buy my wife new sets of tires at about $2100 installed every 13k miles (by then the threads are showing). Ours is an m50 package and while it performs insanely well for a 5k plus lbs SUV, it’s eats tires. They’re staggered so you can’t even rotate them. We’re talking corvette rear wheel territory. Definitely has some meats.
I have the same X7. Tires are $3k every 7k miles. If you get the tire and wheel warranty whenever you do purchase the vehicle or any vehicle for that matter. The warranty is a must! Nails, potholes etc are going to affect the tires. It’s a no brainer. The BMW drives, handles and brakes better than any vehicle in its class imo. Once you start driving a BMW. A Porsche is the only comparable vehicle. But X7 having a 3rd row that an adult can ride in on a road trip is the way to go. Just my $0.02
X7 is the most unreliable of all the current BMW models complete junk everything breaks and so many tech gimmick stuff that it drives me crazy when trying to operate basic things like the rear seats.. Just this last week 4 X7: leaking sharks fin cover and replacement of TCB, drivers seat heater mat replacement, steering column regressing, steering rack removal to do a repair for squeaky noise , check engine light for flap damage ( outside influence not to blame BMW), I did a liquid cool ac condenser, 2 front lower control arms and left front air strut ( warranty for intermittent noise). X7 is common to be BMW TC parts list. What does that mean? It means the technician can't just replace that part unless it is approved by BMW NA, and BMW will do its best not to approve it. Why do parts end up on TC? because they're junk and break often but BMW or its suppliers are in denial because their analysis determined no failure and think the techs are greedy just want to replace parts to make money. Do yourself a favor by buying an X3 or X5. The X7 is not any more spacious and is ugly looking. You need space because you are a large family will X7 is not for you guys. Need a miniVAN or Suburban.
Gee thanks for the in depth reasons for not buying!!! I read somewhere that the X7 wasn't much bigger inside than a X5.
It’s not, and ever since the pandemic x5’s with third row have been unavailable so people have been buying the x7. The X3 has some pretty consistent front axle suspension noises but not nearly as bad as the x7. X5’s do have the shark fin leaking problem as well though but is one of the least problematic cars we see.
Man! You got a lemon. My 2021 X7 M50i has 60,000 without any issues; not one.
Dang for real?
My 22 m50i was perfect until 26k miles and now its one issue after another.
Coolant leak at (26k) and brakes starting loud screeching (at all times and weather - this is still an issue today)
Transfer case needed servicing due to shuddering. (28k)
Front and rear differential fluids need replacing. (29k)
Driver's side front thrust arm bush leaking oil and needed replaced (29.5k).
Now at 30k, but they only replaced the driver's side control arm, so only a matter of time before the passenger side goes, and thats on top of any issues from driving with uneven wear on the two.
Getting less optimistic by the day!
I don’t understand the appeal of the X7 when the Sienna does everything it does better. It’s a bad choice of compromise if you need to move people around
I have 58,000 miles on my 2021 m50i and have never had an issue.
V8 is fairly reliable the B58 is another story.
Dumb question, but why? I have a leased X7 coming to an end and recently measured my tread, was shocked how much wear it has compared to my Audi that I drive hard. I’m averaging 5k miles/year for the past 3 and drive it like a granny.
Weight of the vehicle (an X7 is well over 5000 pounds), amount of torque the engine puts out, and the alignment spec BMW uses to provide aggressive handling all combine to play a part. There isn’t one culprit but rather all three play a role in it.
Just wanted to be the first to comment before the onslaught of "why is the grille so big" folks get off work.
I've seen the car in person at a pre-launch event, and overall it looks really good compared to other full size SUVs.
This one’s sitting at $89,*** MSRP according to the sticker, but the interior is quite the cut above for the price.
I just got a quick glance, but it has a lot of the features the 7 series has.
The refinement of the interior is definitely what struck me as the most appealing feature. I actually ended up getting a new 750i instead because the 2nd row legroom was the same as our outgoing X5. Real disappointment because personally I couldn't care less about a 3rd row, I just want ample legroom.
I don’t mind it on the X as much. On the new 7 series it’s just terrible.
I saw the 7 series in person, and I think it looks quite nice too actually. Almost like a rolls royce
Eww.
You could be disfigured by fire and still look better than that car.
Am I the only one that feels like: the more you look at it, the less bad it gets? Was kinda the same way for the X6 when it launched ya know
I drove one this past Saturday. We drove the 6 cylinder version. As we currently drive the 8 cylinder X5, I have to say I was very impressed with the output of that engine. We like all of the improvements over the F series X5.
One feature I love on our X5 that I'm sorry to see missing on the X7 is the night-vision camera. We live in an area that has the highest rate of car vs deer accidents in the country. Everytime you get in a car here, you've got a 1 in 40 chance of hitting a deer. Our night-vision camera has saved our butts on several occasions when it's seen the deer before we did.
I'm still looking forward to driving the 8 cylinder version, but I think my wife is going to insist on this car when it's time to retire her X5.
I was just trying to find the purpose of the circle right in the middle of the lower air dam and discussing it with a coworker. We both work in parts, and he mentioned both the tow hook cover and the PDC, but I located those right on the bumper in the usual spots.
I will have to run the VIN tomorrow and try to find out, it looks too out of place to be nothing. Are you sure the night vision camera isn’t an option on the X7?
I think that might be the sensor for the adaptive cruise control. It's the one that always throws an error when it gets covered with snow. Usually the night vision camera is on the drivers side at the upper outer grill. (At least it is on my X5 and 650)
I've configured the X7 on BMW'S site (and Googled it) several times and can't find any mention of the night vision camera. My CA isn't up to speed on it enough yet to say definitively, but did comment that it may be an option later. I'd love for somebody to prove me wrong.
I feel like the grille gets a lot of negative attention, meanwhile the grille on a Tahoe is larger and everyone loves that car.
Proportions. I love large grills on some makes like the Tahoe or my old Wrangler. I feel this would look better if the lights are a little larger or the grill was a little smaller for balance.
A huge SUV with 6 cyl
Naturally doesn’t give too good FE, especially in mumbai traffic
Took it to test drive, got 2kmpl and never touched that thing in my life again
How much does your 3 beasts give mileage?
Gt - 6-10
Gle - 4-6
Jetta - 7-10
Hector got competition now
lol
REALLY 2 💀 that's worse than MG hector
bro hector aur x7 😭 what comparison is this
Buy Service Plus package with extended warranty. It will cost around 10L in total for 5 years, it includes all services and 5 year vehicle warranty.
Around 40-50k for oil change and filters. 3-4kmpl mileage
It depends. if you bought the service package upfront(up to 7 years), you probably will only have to pay for tyre replacement if punctured.

I didn't really like it at first, but it's kind of grown on me since then.
The facelift G11, however, hasn't changed a bit. The grille doesn't mesh with the headlights on that car at all.
Meh, it’s still just another SUV. Next...
I would argue to say it's the best in its class now, love this thing.
I agree. After taking it for a brief drive, I’m very impressed. This one is a 50i and it hauls. Obviously there’s tremendous body roll and the steering is very light, but it would be silly to try and make a vehicle this large feel sporty.
But the X7 is extremely comfortable and the quality of the interior is just fantastic. It’s a very nice place to be.
Yes, ugly presence.
no arguing that its an ugly piece of shit either
It’s hideous
I want a 7-seater to use as daily for at least the next 5-7 years and I dont want to be without the “Ultimate Driving Machine/BMW” experience.
Would you recommend this car?
Alternatives surprisingly would be a Toyota Fortuner or the latest Ford Everest.
Thanks
I think the X7 is a great car, and if a big SUV is your thing a fine daily driver
Btw another good alternative to consider I’d say would be a Q7 if you want more options.
If you only want it for 5-7 years, why not lease one. Also, the ultimate driving machine probably only really applies to sedans and wagons. The laws of physics get in the way of any large , heavy vehicle , with a higher center of gravity from being an "ultimate driving machine " compared to their sedan/wagon peers.
Last I checked you can’t lease cars for 5-7 years. Also lease deals are terrible right now, might as well finance it and sell it once you’re ready to move on.
Of course not. Leases are for 3 years. So basically lease for 3 years and then lease another car 3 years later.
The x7 will depreciate like crazy. The only BMWs that hold value decently are the 3 series and M cars.

If you have the money and want it why not ? If you don’t have the money it’s a bad idea. Lol
leased a 2020 x7 m50i and now i’m buying it out. i think that says enough lmao
Hi all I’m test driving a 2019 X7 with 62,000 miles. One owner, serviced at the same dealer near me since day 1. Minor rear accident repaired. Asking 39,900. Plan on negotiating price but wondering how the 2019’s reputation is - any strong yes or no votes? I like the styling and the tech options are in line with my newer Subaru Ascent. Insurance rate quote is good.
I got a 2019 clean title with 56k miles for 37k a few months ago.
Mine just hit 56K...bought it last July with 38K miles on it for $43K. Starter issue, transfer case, front control arm bushings, oil pump, sunroof leaks are all issues I commonly read about....mine had the starter issue (replaced), control arm bushings need to be done ($2k), and the transfer case fluid has been changed last month....waiting to see if slight shuddering returns...so far it hadn't. Get a 3rd party warranty as well, you'll need it for the items I mentioned and some more. Love the vehicle, the ride, the look, the comfort and all.
I also need my control arm replaced. Part currently back ordered smh. I had the shuddering issue and replaced the transfer case fluid, rear and front differential fluid. No shuddering since then and planing to change every 50-60k miles. I also added silicone adhesive sealant around my shark fin to prevent any leaks.
I’m all about taking preventative measures with this car.
Agreed. Before we even had ours a day we realized one of the Bowden cables had snapped for 3rd row. That repair covered just about the entire warranty cost.
Thanks so much. Good call on a warranty.
I’d pass. Assuming it’s the 40i, the engine is pretty solid, so is the transmission… the issue is that these are so technologically advanced that there are MANY things to break, and it being a first year model doesn’t help with that.. past the 5 year mark you’re really raking a gamble
Bought my 2020 40i with great packages with 73k miles one owner and looooong service history for $35,400
I would pass. Try to aim for a 2021 or higher with a solid service history.
2020 is the goat
2020 is goated
39.9k is too high, especially with the accident on record. Maybe ~$36k.
I bought a loaded 40i with 60k on the odometer for 38k last October. M sport, DHP, merino leather, etc.
Great experience so far except for one issue: the shark fin leak. The faulty seal led to damages to my auxiliary battery and power module. $1700 job. This would be the first issue I would address if I were to purchase another used x7.
I'll also need to do the transfer case fluid on my next service(~$500).
I would buy one if you have at least a few grands to put aside for potential repairs. Keep in mind that the high maintenance cost is why these cars depreciate so quickly. However, the comfort is second to none at this price point. Have to take the good with the bad, I guess.
Thank you for the advice and tips - it’s doing to be a tough call, I really like it but there are so many unknowns.
N63TU3 (or maybe TU2 I can't seem to find which one it is online for the 2020 model). The V8 is a beast to ride and I've heard the TU3 and TU2 engines are way more reliable than older versions of the N63 that is infamous for it problems. My question is I want to keep this baby for the long term so what are the maintenance things i should be on top of other than oil changes every 8000kms (5k miles). It has 60k KMs (37k miles), and the used car dealer did an oil change and brake and rotor change before giving it to me. Some people say coolant flush (my BMW dealer doesn't offer it since it's a lifetime coolant for them so would have to get that done privately) should I also change my spark plugs, transfer case oil and transmission oil at my next service along with a coolant flush? I just had a 55 point inspection at my BMW dealer (there was a $69.95 sale on it) and other than a tire balance issue they said everything is great (no leaks in coolant or oil anywhere). Lastly what oil do you guys recommend? I'm up in Canada and I'm thinking just stick with BMW's recommended oil spec.
If you plan to keep the car long term, take all the maintenance intervals and cut them in half. Those maintenance intervals are for the “lifetime” of a lease.
At 37k, there isn’t much to worry about. When you get past 60k, I’d consider doing some preventative maintenance. Not too familiar with these models but hopefully someone will chime in with some suggestions.
For coolant, I’d probably wait a bit and replace the pump/tstat as preventive maintenance along with a drain and fill.
The comedic element of those two giant sniffers, which don't even sniff so much anymore. Why did BMW go big, lol. Cheers, must be a pleasant car otherwise.
Yet people don't care about Lexus and Audi horrendous giant grilles. Double standards.
Because the Lexus design is just better and fits the car and brand and the rest of the bumpers still look really nice, on BMW it's just this ugly ass grill and that's it.. Same with Audi, although I never liked these big grills on Audis.
Not true. The hate on the Lexus lx570 grill is massive.
People just get less emotional about those two in general, as they don't create in the same level as attractive car designs to begin with. And associate themselves more with understated design language, less aggressive. And people do complain a lot about Lexus crazy grille sizes though.
oh no i hate the Lexus grill even more
My understanding is BMW determined that large grills are popular with the Chinese market. There’s enough of a demand there to justify making significant changes that cater to their tastes.
I personally like the large grills on the 7 series and the X7. Sort of Rolls-lite, which those vehicles aren’t far off from anyway. What I don’t like are the thin/split headlights, which also are to cater towards the Chinese market
Congrats! Most people push off those items to 80-100k km depending on driving style and don't have an issue. Changing out fluids and whatnot is never a bad idea, but not necessary at only 60k.
2019+ G11/G12 supposedly come with the TU3. Oil capacity is 10.5 liters... Sounds expensive.
According to the service manual, LL-01FE is the specification of oil that BMW recommends for the N63 line. This comes in 0w-30 and has a lower HTHS viscosity (3.0cP ish vs 3.5cP ish) for marginally improved fuel economy versus LL-01 and LL-04, which are more commonly available in North America and also suitable for the N63. However, keep in mind this note from BMW: "In countries where the ambient temperature frequently falls below --20 °C, we recommend the use of 0W instead of 5W products." So depending on what part of Canada you're in, might want to stick with a 0w-30 or 0w-40 in the winter.
Mobil 1's European 5w-40/0w-40 and ESP 5w-30 are good examples of oils that meet these specs and are readily available at places like Walmart.
Yes I think the LCI brought both the 390kW TU3 and the giant grille to cool it and to visually signal to the schleppers that you have the 390kW engine.
Best form factor, if you ask me!
Rip value. Rip maintenance
First BMW for us.
Picked up a 2022 X7 M50i this evening. Previous leased vehicle through a local company, 48k miles, 63k OTD. Upgrading from 2014 Jeep GC Linited with 245k miles. Hoping this will last at least half of that (🤞).
Executive package, luxury seating, cold weather package and 2nd row captain chairs which we wanted. Didn't want the DAP package which I know people really like. Love the 22" wheels, but cost of tires with the staggered setup is brutal. Test drove X5 M50i, and preferred that, but wife & kids liked the space of the X7, especially once we have all our ski stuff loaded.
Well maintained vehicle, but picked up extended warranty through the dealership (60mo / 65k), staying at purchase. Price was similar to Fidelity which we settled on. They were firm on price and budged a little bit. In the end, perhaps could have found better pricing with more patience, but X7 M50i within 4 hours were hard to find.
Could have probably lived with B58, but I'm a caveman and love V8s. I'll probably change my tune once we have to pay for the gas....
Congratulations!
I did something similar but nowhere as cool - picked up a 2023 G30/340i with 14k miles. It was a end of lease/CPO. Original sticker was $67K, and I got it for $42K.
PS - Can I join your family - you have great taste!
Congrats! For sure this looks better than the facelift IMO. Enjoy your new car.
Had both 740i and now 750i. Really don't see much difference except V8 is smoother and not as loud somehow in the cabin.
Went with the X7 40i for the reliability factor, and found one with over $20k of options when new (had to go 1000 miles away) paid $37k with 73k miles. Looked really close to new. Could have fooled most. One of my properties tenant who is into cars in general thought it was a lease through my work program.
Put only 1.5k miles in 2 months (1k was for driving from where we got it) and love it.
I drive the 750i to work.
For tires, just buy brands that don't spend over 50% of their budget on sponsorship and advertising like Michelin, Pirelli etc... At Walmart, was $900 for all 4 tires (22 inch rims) balanced and mounted. Still expensive, but not close to over $2500.
Anyway enjoy!!!
I find you tyre advice a bit sus. Looking at independent reviews, Michelin specifically rate excellent. What specifically brands are you recommending? Also why do you care about the corporate sounding splits in a Tyre over its measured performance?
Try for yourself. Got the off brand arroyo for my Hyundai Equus that chew thru tires. Michelin were the worst, gone after 10k+miles... They go out around the same mileage but cost 1/3 of the price 🤷. I don't trust much any "independent" studies until I try myself.
Those laser headlights still look so supremely clean and dastardly. Congrats! Drive it in good health
😂
Tell me one (or a few) features you absolutely love about your X7! I have a 2024 and I feel like there are so many things I don’t even know it’s capable of and I’m missing out on! You don’t even want to know how long I had it before I knew it “drove itself” down the interstate highway (disclaimer..I do mostly town driving)😱😂 Our salesman didn’t take the time to point out features and I feel like I’m may be missing out!!
Today I used the auto-park feature for the first time today while trying to parallel park downtown. The space to my eye was too small and I tried but failed. Then I used the auto-park feature and boom it’s parked perfectly!
Our X7 is a 2021. This is the first time I ever used it.
Can’t wait to try it out on our X5.
I just discovered the backup feature and love it. We have a pretty tight garage and driveway and the car steers it for me. I showed my husband ‘no hands’! Haha
You can record paths (short) such as parking into and out of the garage, etc. We have a tricky garage entry and my wife always tenses up when backing into the garage. So I have recorded paths for parking in and pulling out so all she has to do is just select the recorded path and it will go on it own. You can do these with the app without even sitting in the car. Unfortunately, my wife is even more stressed when the car backs itself into the garage at a faster pace than she would 😀
Say what?!? It does it by itself without being in the vehicle?!? 😱😱
Totally does. You need to keep pressing on some icon while it keeps moving. It also does it slower when you are not in the car as opposed to when you are in it.
It’s remarkable. It will go forward and back to squeeze itself into the space.
Last year on a roadtrip, I got a compliment from a guy standing across the street who walked over to tell us that he had never seen anyone park so well in that spot in 27 years. Before I could take the credit for it, my wife eagerly shared the truth :)
I love the parking feature and the parallel parking works extremely well - better than you would imagine.
Ours is a 2020...how do I know if we have this feature available?
Don’t know for sure. I think you’d know if you had it because every time you put the car in reverse, it shows you assist options like pulling out of the parking spot, etc.
We built ours with the Parking Assistant or something package. Do you have 360 camera view? If you do, then you may have that package.
Does it do it by itself? I’ve often wondered this but I haven’t had to parallel park in forever and will avoid it at all costs if I have to! lol
Yes it does. You need to press the physical button marked P by the shifter and the parking camera view turns on and starts looking for parking. It will make a ding sound everytime it identifies a parking space between cars. When you put the car in reverse, it will show you the spot where it can park. If you like it, select the parking feature on the screen and let the car do its job.
What I Love About My 2020 BMW X7 xDrive40i – A Proud Owner’s Perspective
I custom-ordered my 2020 BMW X7 xDrive40i from the factory and took delivery just before the pandemic fully disrupted auto production. From the first minute behind the wheel, I’ve been absolutely in love with it.
The cabin is whisper-quiet, and the level of comfort and ergonomic design is simply outstanding. Whether I’m running errands around town or taking long highway trips, the driving experience is smooth and refined. The ventilated seats and adequate A/C make a huge difference here in South Florida’s heat, and my factory-tinted windows definitely help keep the cabin cool.
Despite being powered by a strong inline-6, the fuel economy has been reasonable, which I appreciate for a vehicle of this size and performance class. And unlike some post-COVID builds, my X7 didn’t come with any feature deletions — everything is there, including physical buttons (which I vastly prefer over touch-only setups).
I went with the bench seat configuration, which gives me added flexibility in passenger and cargo space. Speaking of cargo — with the third row down, it’s massive. I also opted for the factory-installed tow hitch, which has been perfect for carrying both traditional and electric bikes.
Tech-wise, Active Cruise Control is a game changer. It makes long-distance driving much more relaxing by assisting with acceleration, braking, and maintaining safe distances. My Harman Kardon audio system is incredible and should satisfy all but the most hardcore audiophiles.
I previously owned a Mercedes-Benz GLS, and while that was a great SUV, the X7 has been far more reliable and satisfying overall. I even took the proactive step of replacing the transfer case oil, knowing it was a common early-issue area — zero problems so far.
Also, I still can’t get over the self-closing doors — such a small touch, but it adds to the feeling of luxury every time I get in or out.
Personally, I prefer the pre-facelift design. The newer models, especially with the massive screen and futuristic dash layout, feel more like a gaming rig than a luxury vehicle to me.
If you’re thinking about buying one, I highly recommend it — ideally a well-maintained, one-owner model from the South with no snow exposure. The 2020 X7 is an incredible SUV when fully loaded, and it checks all the boxes for comfort, performance, reliability, and practicality.
This weekend I drove a 2022 BMW X7 for a 400-mile trip across freeways and mountain roads. For context, my daily driver is a 2022 BMW X3 xDrive30i, which I’ve owned for a while now. I went into the trip expecting to be wowed by the X7’s luxury, comfort, and ride quality — and while it was very nice inside and undeniably premium, I came away with a very different impression than expected.
To my surprise, I found the X3 to be the more enjoyable car to drive — by far. It’s more spirited, more responsive, easier to maneuver, and even less tiring to drive over long distances. I felt more in control. Starting, stopping, and weaving through curvy roads was just more intuitive. Even though the X7 has better seats and a smoother suspension, the sheer weight and bulk of it really made it feel sluggish and heavy — you can feel it every time you brake or take a turn.
Now here’s the part that got me thinking: I live in a suburban area, and every school drop-off line is packed with X7s, GLS 450s, Palisades, Tahoes, and Escalades — all crawling less than 5 miles a day to pick up and drop off kids. It makes me wonder:
🔹 Do most people really need something this big for a short school run or grocery trip? 🔹 Have they ever lived with or driven something smaller, like an X3, long enough to realize how much easier and more fun it can be? 🔹 Or are we just in this “bigger is better” loop where perceived safety and status have taken priority over driving feel?
No shade to anyone — I get that third-row seating can be a necessity for larger families or carpooling. But for many of these folks, I suspect that third row is empty 95% of the time. I’m honestly starting to think there’s a whole segment of parents out there who might actually enjoy driving more if they downsized.
Curious to hear from others — especially if you’ve cross-shopped mid-size vs full-size SUVs or switched between the two. What made you choose one over the other?
Fair, it is rhetorical question! I also expect someone to ask why I drive an X3 and not a sedan! To be honest, my perception about what is an upgrade and what I aspire for has changed post this drive. I’ve done many “test drives” of other new cars at dealerships but those small drives are nothing compared to living with a car for a few days.
Yeah, nah. Difference between an X3 and a 3 series is incredible. Having a work deck at working height with a built-in sun shade is irreplaceable. Also, the ride height makes seeing what’s going on ahead so much easier. No question for me on why small/medium SUV over a sedan.
I think you’re forgetting though that some people drive BMW for the badge or the “luxury”. Too bad, IMO, since they’re way cooler as a fun driving, useful car :)
I am so confused by your post. You're surprised your much smaller x3 was easier to drive, maneuver, less tiring, etc?
Why is this surprising.
Look at it from my point of view. Imagine I made a post of me renting an x3 and said I'm surprised it's less fun, harder to maneuver, less nimble than my Miata. Does that sound ridiculous to you?
Many people need a larger SUV. Parents + 2 kids + dog are going to be cramped in an x3.
Maybe I should have been clearer in my post but the surprise element is the comfort portion of the drive, not the fun. While the X7 should feel more comfortable due to its higher-end seats and suspension, perceived comfort when driving isn’t just about softness is what I’ve learnt. Control, nimbleness, and visibility contribute hugely to reduced driver fatigue.
I mean it still drives like a BMW if you look at the competitors. You can still push it safely without feeling like a boat vs something like a Escalade.
Larger SUVs like the X7 really need DAP (BMW's version of Autopilot). You turn that on, get on the highway and zone out. Drove to San Antonio (21 hour drive) and hardly felt any fatigue. Did the same trip in a 335d and I was much more fatigued.
You'd be genuinely shocked how roomy x3 interiors are. 2 kids and a dog would fit perfectly unless it's a mastiff or a huge lab
I see what you did there! I am just too overwhelmed with emotions as the X7 and GLS450 have been the aspirational cars for me for years. Now I am just excited about a much larger pool of cars I can go for next! And rent a three row whenever I need one!
The X7 and GLS are highway and traffic warriors. They come into their own when their job is simply to make you as comfortable as possible. Of course they will not be as enjoyable driving machines as their smaller more nimble counterparts.
I was impressed with my friend’s G class until I rode in it. It felt like a Durango. I prefer my X3 even though it’s a diesel.
I think the key is recognizing how often that happens and the what you are paying for the larger SUV. In the case of an x3 vs x7, $40,000 can pay for a lot of deliveries/shipping etc.
Yeah, people tend to adapt to the size of the vehicle they’re driving, and that’s about all. I get it though, and bigger vehicles have more limitations in terms of handling. A driver of a base model X7 is not doing so because the cheaper, stripped out 3-row family-hauler is lighter, and therefore the enthusiast’s choice. That driver is not in the market for an X7.
Hello! So my family and I travel full time. This is our first long trip with our X7. (We just traded our beloved Audi Q7 for it in January) Question is, any recommendations for caring for it or things to remember/check often/make it easier along the way? I’ve had a few Audi’s and Mercedes’ in the past but this is the first BMW. I’m decently mechanically inclined but totally new to the ends and outs of this one. We’ll be away from our home base for 8 months from start to end. It’s an xdrive 40i. Thanks!
Enjoy your road trip.
Ngl, road trip with x7 and wife+3 year old kid, feels freaking amazing
Thank you!! It’s always a great time. We just drove from Utah to Georgia in a Ram 1500 and while it was decent, I’m much looking forward to doing it in our X7
Work where they build it in SC, and got one for my wife and road trips. Perfect vehicle for road trip. Better than the 7 series with kids. Love the massage function when long trip. Hopefully you have the bench seats so you have more trunk space. If you plan to keep it in the long run, do oil change every 5k miles, do transmission, transfer case and both differential every 60k miles, or if used, whenever you can if over 60k miles. People reported having weak AC... I never thought so, tainted windows and ceramic coating helps (it was done on mine before I got it).
Hope you enjoy!!!!!
Thanks for the feedback! We have captain seats sadly lol. We do like them but I would have liked the extra space like we had in the Audi but the cargo area feels way bigger either way. We’ll likely be around 60k when we get back from this 8 month run, so good info. Seems pretty straightforward. Never had any ac issues here in GA and it’s been mid 90’s. She’s a dream so far.
I would customize some of the suspension settings such as eco pro individual or sport individual, sometimes when I’m in some twisties in the mountains, I like to stay in eco but turning was a boaty feel in eco mode due to the softness, I adjusted the suspension to sport mode but eco in engine which help make the car more stable in turning and grounded , especially going down hill.
Good info. Question about that. When you change the drive mode to something other than default/comfort, does yours reset to default/comfort when you turn it off or does it stay in eco? Mine seems to always go back to default settings when I turn it off
Yah I always have to click it to eco cause mine starts up in comfort mode. I think there’s a way to always start it up Ina certain mode but I couldn’t find the way or it was through a 3rd party app or something. I can’t recall.
I would wrap the whole front and sides. You will thank me later.
I have so many chip damages on my hood and the sides have many of them.... At a high speed even the tiniest of sand particles or small stones will cause a good damage
My Audi had a ton of pits and dings. I really should look into this. Like a clear wrap?
I do PPF and ceramic coating. Doesn’t cost that much if you want to prevent small chips and swirls.
Unless you want to change the color of the entire vehicle, any clear PPF will do. It will protect it for the long run.
I’d roll comfort mode to be honest. Eco is too sluggish and really hampers the AC. I mean, it’s an X7, it should be a pleasant experience. Only thing I’d keep an eye on is coolant once in a while (super fast to check). Ours randomly started slow leaking - didn’t require immediate service, could add coolant on the spot. Got it replaced under warranty at around 15k miles. Love it for road trips, so quiet and comfortable. - I should mention, tech told me those pumps are a frequent failure on the B58.
Does anybody tow with their x7? Currently have a truck but have always wanted a bmw. I have a 21 foot sea hunt. Don’t tow it too often and usually short distances but occasionally longer pulls.
I have a 2024 X7 and tow my Apex nano 194BHS. Not to say you NEED the factory towing package, but I made sure mine had it. The X7 has a towing capacity of over 7000 lbs and a hitch weight of around 700. My trailer is only about 5000 fully loaded and the X7 tows it without issue. I live in Northern California and camping is often either near the coast or somewhere in the Sierra Nevadas. The X7 manages the inclines better than huge Diesel trucks. I tend to be passing them and with my Bluetooth brake controller, once adjusted it handles braking smooth and steady.
I'm towing our caravan around in Europe, I have a 40xd variant and it's perfect, almost effortless. Interestingly enough haven't seen much faster wearing of the breaks or tires. My caravan is 2.9 tonns.
All variants can tow a good amount of weight. I've use mine to tow my car to the track. Combined weight is probably around 5k pounds between car/trailer/extras.
The v8 trims can tow over 7000lbs.
sorry to resurrect from the dead...Considering doing the same, enclosed trailer with a car. I assume you are using a trailer brake controller? do you still feel good about this as a tow vehicle?
I have a 17 foot bayliner with a 90hp motor. I tow it from the house to the launch with no issues
Have a 22ft Chaparral that we tow with our X5. Other family members have X7s and they also tow great!
Had a 2019 X7 what was almost out of warranty in Australia. Only 3 years for the previous versions. The newer ones have 5 years. So went in to spec a new x7 m60 but got talked I to buying an XM since they had once on the floor already.
It retails for 320k aud. Got almost 60k.
The XM makes no sense but everyone loves it.
No regrets broskis....
Someone give this sales associate an award
I went to the dealer for a horse and the salesperson talked me into this donkey.
I went to the dealer for a donkey and the salesperson made and ass out of me....
j/k..... if he got 60K off and he is happy, it's a win-win
The buyers remorse is screaming at us😂
Talked into it huh. Everyone loves it huh. Okay dude.
no, no he "got talked I to buying" it
My condolences.
All I've learned is not to talk crap cause I made fun of the g80/g82 and now look at me, with a g80 😂
Just picked this loaded 2025 X7 M60i up over the weekend and couldn’t be happier with the choice. I loved my Benz (2023 GLE53) and maybe one day I’ll go back; however, that day won’t be anytime soon. Still getting used to the vehicle and the differences, but the tech, especially the tier 2 autonomous driving, has me here for a while.
If anyone has any tips or tricks they’d love to share, I’m all ears!
Be honest the interior build quality is way better. Mercedes has been lacking in that department
I do appreciate the BMW, at least on this model, is willing to still use soft-touch surfaces on the door pockets rather than plastic. I still do find my old seats to be more comfortable for longer trips (drove 350 miles after picking it up to come home from the dealership) but the BMW ones are still extremely comfortable - this is totally personal preference, of course. While my GLE was fully loaded (this one essentially is as well), I do appreciate other finer details of the X7 as well. Overall I love both cars and both brands, but BMW does come out ahead, including overall build quality. I will say, I did get lucky and never had any build quality issues with my GLE other than a small wrinkle in the leather on the door and the bomber doors needing to be replaced from a spring breaking. But the increased padding on every surface of the BMW makes it feel so much more luxurious while still being built for speed and performance.
I had a similar experience last year when I switched from an E-Class to a 5-Series. I miss the comfort a bit, but I am enjoying the driving experience and the new assists.
Yeah, I think the two things I miss the most are actually the two things that Godvater mentioned below - the multicontour seats and the better cooling. I also do miss the auto speed limit change on all roads - not just select roads (not that it’s too hard to hit “set” again lol). I have always found BMW seats to be a little short in the seat, even with the thigh extender fully extended, but I was able to get the seat into a very comfortable position. The driving experience is incredible, especially for an SUV this big. Was your e-class loaded with the assistance or was all of that “new” to you in the 5 series?
The MB multicontour seats are excellent, but the 5-series comfort seats are just as good with more customization options. The backseats of the E-class were more comfortable, as my kids have already complained :). Overall, I feel that Mercedes-Benz pays more attention to details and materials, while BMW offers a visibly better driving experience.
I had all the assists in my previous S212, but they were designed 10 years earlier, so it's not surprising that BMW's are more efficient and smarter.
Absolutely love the X7! Rented one for a week during a family trip to SF/Sac/Yosemite last may. I was blown away by how nice the interior was. Air suspension soaked up every bump without being too soft in the corners or having a floaty feeling, the dual pane glass made the cabin ultra quiet, and the 40i model with the B58 averaged 22-23mpg the whole week.
I'd buy one immediately but the lady doesn't want a 3 row SUV, she's pushing for a X6 lol.
Honestly, I was too! I initially went with Benz because I just loved their interiors so much more (and admittedly still like the multi contour and cooling better in Benz) but I was blown away by the comfortability of the ride and interior. Couldn’t agree more - I don’t feel floaty at all but all the road imperfections are just absorbed by the air suspension and independent dampening. I averaged 22mpg on my ride home from the dealership and was thoroughly impressed - it was mostly uphill (slight incline) the whole way.
Haha that’s fair - just tell her she can keep the back seats folded away 😉. I did sit in the backseats and while I wouldn’t want to spend a roadtrip back there, they were super comfortable and I had plenty of space. I was blown away that they are also heated seats ha.
Hey! You stole my car! No wonder it’s not in my garage…
Yo, I was just, uh, borrowing it without the intent to return it. Definitely didn’t steal it. Nope nope nope.
Hell of a spec you go there man (since it’s like mine ha)! Any real differences between the 2024 and 2025?
Not that I’ve seen. They did the facelift not too long ago, and it seems almost virtually the exact same

Hey everyone! Long time bmw owner (+14 yrs).. I been looking for a used 2020-2022 x7 to upgrade from my x3 plug in. My sales rep just called me and told me a 2020 x7 with m sport package just came in as a trade in. It has 68k miles but asking 37k for it. But could give it to me for $36,200. And said i could get the extended warranty on it.
Wanted to know:
Added photos of it
Thanks!
It seems ok. I would look over the whole country to compare. also M-sport package is only a pretty thing but add no value to driving experience or anything else. Check what other options it has, if only sport package, I wouldn't take it, just too light on features.
The basic options most X7 have: executive package and DAPP. Then extra one I like: DHP and Bowers &Wilkins (both rare on a 40i)
I have a 2019 with over $20k worth of options and no M-sport package.
Good luck
It has these packages:
Also offering 7 years, 125k miles extended warranty on it for dealer price (~3500).
Yeah, I meant premium package instead of executive. Not much options ... The car is good. Reliable beside the transfer case.
Coming from an X3, it will look very nice, but I don't want you to have buyers remorse after you find out some nicer options you have been missing out on. Cheaper to get one with the right option than refit later. Cold package is a must have for me. The heated wheel is well worth having.
M sport pack is a huge deal. It makes the car.
I have the same one with the individual color plus $20k in upgrades. Executive, cold weather blah blah blah. The color is what got me(Ametrin metallic). Beautiful color combo with black. My price was $38k 70k miles plus $3k for the warranty. I changed all of the fluids and filters and she rides beautifully. There is/was a white one for $36k with 56k miles in Yonkers and I wanted to take a look at that one but I put enough money into big Bertha already lol. That’s a good price for what you’re getting imo. Make sure you’re on top of the fluids as you already know
I just got a 2020 with 47k miles for 44k. So far love it. Looks like the same spec
I spent several weeks looking throughout the entire country for a 2020 X7. Needless to say, I did a ton of price analysis.
This price, for the model and options, is pretty fair. Similar X7’s without M sport and less options will go for low’ish $30k’s.
What’s most important is the service history. My car had full BMW records, transfer case serviced, new brakes and rotors and all scheduled maintenance done. Check the Carfax for sure.
Message me with any questions. My X7 looks the same- carbon black, black grill etc. It’s an amazing vehicle!
Thanks! Just DM'd
I would go forward 36k is decent amount.
So I kinda hate this car. For reference I had a 2021 x5 and it was 1000x better.
Let’s start with the interior- yeah, the touch screen looks cool. But when you have to use it for everything- it sucks. Day goes from hot to cold? Gonna wait at least a minute to drop the temp. Also the ac does not cool the car down when it is above 85 degrees outside. The ac vents cannot be directed at the driver if you are hot or cold. Want to change from CarPlay to radio? Good luck. The media button in the middle doesn’t work half the time. Then after it does work you have to scroll around til you find fm/am/satellite and hopefully it doesn’t skip over one of them. (Also the touch screen is terribly unresponsive- think original iPad under a plastic screen protector) The car will randomly shift into manual mode while driving. No explanation, no reason, it just does. Ventilated seats? Sometimes you turn it up and it turns on the heat. Doesn’t show that on the monitor, but your ass gets roasted. Drive train? Good luck- so many times it has thrown a “chassis error” and we have to shut the car off and wait and then turn it back on. Then the deal killer- yesterday I was stopped at a 2 way with 55mph traffic cross- I have plenty of space (thank god) and accelerate. The car lurches forward and dies. The fuel pump regulator went out and I was stuck with my four year old in the middle of an intersection with cross traffic bearing down. I got it restarted but could only drive 2mph (the error said driving still possible- not so much). Thankfully I got out of the car and was able to stop traffic to get through. All in all- hate. Performance was ok, aesthetics were not a major upgrade over previous model years, stick with 2020-2022. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.
Not sure about your other problems, but for climate control, voice commands work pretty well. I just use the “I’m hot” command and that helps.
The AC on the X7 and X5 is not the greatest. It’s loud and weak. Luckily, I live where it rarely gets very hot or I might hace chosen something else.
Yeah that a huge problem in the Midwest- sweating like crazy in the summer when I would play golf and it’s super hot. I’ll try the voice commands but honestly I think they are going to buy it back and I’ll get an older x7. Fingers crossed
for climate control, voice commands work pretty well.
I still don't see how this is easier than just reaching down and pressing a button a few times. A button press takes literally one second. Needing to say "hey BMW", wait for a response, say your command, the wait for it to understand and execute the command seems tedious even if it works 100% of the time. And I'm guessing if you're playing music the music stops or gets quieter?
No thanks, just give me a button.
Then don’t buy one of these cars. Your comment adds nothing useful.
OP already has one and so voice commands are a good option. And yeah, simply saying “hey BMW, I’m hot” is pretty easy.
My G05 (pre-LCI) AC is excellent.
It’s not the AC system that’s the problem. It’s those horribly designed center front vents they added to the X7 and X5 LCI.
They’re narrow little slits with a fragile little adjustment. If you turn up the fan past very low, it makes a ton of noise through those vents.
The rest of the vents throughout the car are fine, but those new front vents are crap.
Different model, but same big screen with idrive 8. I love it. Screen responsiveness is fine. Climate controls are easy to navigate. I’m in central Texas and my AC handled the blazing summer heat just fine. Hope they fix your car.
Same here. I have the X7 in blazing Texas with no problems.
How is your heating and ac? How is the touchscreen? Is it really just mine? I’m super pissed to buy a brand new one with 0 miles and the car is worse than my 88 taurus
Same here and we’re in FL, no real issues with cooling. Once we got tint, it’s not been an issue. There have definitely been some bugs with the new idrive 8 but supposedly those should be fixed with the 8.5 update. Does sound like you got one with some issues and hopefully some warranty work will fix.
No issues at all. It’s a big car so heating and AC takes about 30 seconds to make a difference. No issues with touchscreen either.
Also- how have you had a 2024 x7 for over a year? They just released them in may of this year
I saw one at the Rolex 24 and it looked better in person than in pictures. That being said, it's still not all that appealing to me. If I wanted a large 3rd row vehicle in that price range I would probably go with a Navigator. The X7 isn't really large enough to make sense as a third row vehicle when you want to transport 6 or 7 adults. Sure, they fit... but not comfortably. And isn't comfort the name of the game when you buy a $100k luxury vehicle?
Not to show off but just went through a similar situation and chose Navigator. The black labels are really backed up though I’m expecting early June delivery :) really excited
That navigator is a dream. My dad has one and it really is incredible from top to bottom. I love BMW but honestly I don’t think there’s any competition when it comes to the Lincoln Navigator for SUV
You made the right choice. If you're looking for a luxury 3 row around the $100k range and you want it to accommodate seating 6 or 7 adults there's no contest. The Navigator, Escalade or Qx80 are what you want, in that order. The Navigator has the best 3rd row by far and I like the styling the most. Also a fan of that motor.
If you're only going to use the 3rd row for kids, then you have a lot more options like the X7.
BMW is not the ultimate comfort machine. It is the ultimate driving machine.
Are you saying BMW made a 3 row large SUV without comfort in mind and put all their focus into driving dynamics? Does that make any sense to you?
You can get a loaded Volvo XC90 with a usable third row, nappa leather seats, leather dashboard, Bowers & Wilkins sound, self-driving features, etc. for tens of thousands of dollars less than this thing. Plus the Volvo is actually really, really good looking.
Great side profile
The American side reflector really bothers me. What good does it even do that front with the headlights?
It has to be yellow and the rear has to have red on the side. I know lol
Strategic shot, I am sure Cyrano de Bergerac would have approved of your framing...
Your nose is rather large...
After a year of driving BMW X3, the car was due for service and I sent it to the service centre. Sharing the actual invoice copy here so that people looking to get into premium cars have a reference point of how much it costs to maintain them. It was supposed to be a simple "engine oil replacement" service but turned into something much more expensive. Total bill came to 55k. A few pointers-
The service centre will try to again bundle 10 packs of fuel additives which you can refuse
Double check every line item, they had added couple of line items twice so had to get those removed (couldn't believe it, if this was a scam or a genuine oversight)
Did not consider washing and interiors cleaning- that alone was 16k over and above this
Service cost aside, car itself is really a joy to drive so absolutely no complaints there!
Sounds like a scummy workshop rather than actual high cost of service the actual cost will me more like 20-25k if all the unnecessary fluff is removed. Wth is a microfilter and why does a year old car need a 7k filter that’s definitly a scam. Also the wheel balancing and alignment if it was fine before then it isnt needed and just away to inflate costs.
Its the dealer that sold the car, service is an integral part of their revenue stream and everything is inflated to make max money
Thats the game at every dealership, you have to actively refuse unnecessary stuff and ask for a clear list of items before you hand it over otherwise you end up paying 2x.
My question is how was the balancing out? That too Within a year of diving?
Balancing is not a maintenance item. You balance when you absolutely need to. It's not something you check for everytime you roll into the shop.
A lot of these items look unnecessary. OP is getting swindled
"Endless money pits" -Scotty Kilmer
My accord is an endless money pit. At minimum 1-2l a year in service and maintenance for the past 5 years or so.
Torque over taxes math will add up bro :) Stay blessed and hoping to see you driving these wheels too!
What is 'Vehicle check for extended car'?
Its a random line item, but as per them they check suspension, all buttons etc. They send a video of doing this check
Man that sounds pretty deceitful doesn't it? 3000 bucks just to check if everything is working. That is supposed to be the first part of any service and not seperately costed for.
for such cars everything should work as expected without checking every year.
I saw the first image and started thinking , That's not too much. Then I swiped left.. Then I swiped again .. Then I went to my garage and kissed my Hyundai ..
Been driving this X7 for the better part of last year and I’m loving it. I really think this is one of the best BMW’s on the market. Love the practicality and it’s enough sportiness for a guy like me for a SUV. What are your thoughts?
The car looks stunning. I’m sure it’s a blast to drive. Congrats to you.
Thank you sir! It’s fun to drive for sure.
It’s gorgeous and very practical and comfortable! Congrats!
Thank you!
one of the best cars on the road period not just BMW
66000 miles and it runs perfectly because she took such care of it and this thing is fun asf in sport mode im so greatful
Change the transmission & diff fluids asap if not already done. These are to be done at 50-60k or else shouldn’t be touched at 100k+. Good investment to keep it running perfectly. Prioritize it over any tunes or mods
my dad might have taken care of that for her already i think because i remember countless times of either his x7 or my moms (mine) x3 going to the shop i dont really lnow what diff fluid is but also what do you mean by "or else shouldnt be touched at 100k+"
Diff fluid is differential fluid. Transmission fluid is not changed on high mileage as the transmission has adapted to now heavy fluid. Both are lifetime fills so a dealership won’t change them under regular maintenance. Ofc BMW wants lifetime to be 150k not 250-300k
Don’t run it in sport mode, until you have at least 20,000 miles under your belt. Or your first car will be your last car.
She should’ve gotten you an old Forester or something so that you can actually learn how to drive.
i mean i know how to drive
Sorry, that’s what all dead teenagers say.
You don’t and won’t until you’ve had a couple years under your belt
Drive responsibility
