TL;DR
Refurbished Business Laptops
Refurbished business-grade laptops are highly recommended for students looking for affordable options. Models like the ThinkPad T series, Dell Latitude, and HP EliteBook offer robust build quality and decent performance at a lower price point [1:2],
[1:4],
[2:3]. These laptops are often available through professional refurbishers on platforms like eBay and can provide excellent value for money, especially if you aim for models with modern processors (8th gen Intel or newer) and adequate RAM (16GB recommended).
Lenovo Ideapad Series
The Lenovo Ideapad series is frequently mentioned as a solid choice for students. The Ideapad 5 and 3 models come with various configurations that suit different needs and budgets. They are known for their reasonable prices and decent specifications, such as AMD Ryzen processors which offer good speed and battery efficiency [1:3],
[5:2]. However, some users have reported issues with build quality, so it's worth considering warranty options
[1:5].
Modern 14 Laptop
For those seeking a new laptop, the Modern 14 is highlighted as an affordable yet capable option. It features a 12th Gen Intel Core i3 processor, integrated UHD graphics, and a 14" FHD display, making it suitable for general student use without breaking the bank [5:1].
Refurbished MacBooks
If you're open to spending a bit more, refurbished MacBook Pros from around 2019 are suggested. These models offer excellent battery life and reliability, making them a good investment for students who prefer macOS [5:4]. It's important to ensure they meet your budget constraints, as prices can vary.
Buying Platforms and Tips
When searching for affordable laptops, consider checking platforms like Reebelo for refurbished options [3:1] and Dell Outlet for potential deals
[3:2]. Additionally, local marketplaces like Facebook Market can yield good deals on used laptops if you're willing to do some research
[3:4]. For educational institutions or bulk purchases, exploring company foreclosure auctions or reaching out to companies for donations of old laptops could be beneficial
[4:1].
I am starting my degree in the second semester this year and need an affordable (under 1k) laptops, preferably not a Chromebook.
Any suggestions ?
Best value for money would be any kind of refurb, ex-lease or second hand "business grade laptop". Preferably something from 2020/21 or newer.
I'd recommend having a look on the Lenovo NZ website if you're looking for something new. Their laptops (especially IdeaPads) seem to have better specs than those sold by NZ retailers at the same price.
Don't buy it unless it's something like 30% off though. They're almost always "on sale" at that percentage, and the un-discounted price is pretty steep. You might need to wait a while before something gets under 1k though.
Otherwise, maybe have a look on PB Tech if you need something immediately? They're having a sale on right now, and I think there are some okay laptops (albeit with older gen chips) below 1k right now.
I bought a Lenovo Ideapad 14 Pro last year. The price was very reasonable for the components inside. Beautiful screen, powerful yet efficient processor etc etc.
However, the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. Less than a year after purchase, I am having issues with one of the USB - C charging ports, and the laptop is poorely insulated, which results in getting small electrical shocks when touching the edges of the chassis with the power plug connected. There are also some annoyances with software.
The warranty experience so far leaves a lot to be desired.
The components are great for what you pay, but I have big concerns around the longevity of this laptop. Especially considering my M1 macbook air still runs like a champion after almost 5 years.
Ok... You are not going to like what I am about to say.
Give yourself the best chance of suceeding. Wait a few weeks. Save up and get either a Mac or the cheapest surface laptop. You don't want your project to die before submission. Or your only machine to die days before finals.
Worked at PB tech for 7 years and then went back to study myself. There's a reason why Mac and surfaces are popular.
Usability wise they're just so much better. Long battery life, sturdiness (HP are so prone to damage with its plastic casing ). And they mostly last more than 3 years. They generally don't come in for repair or replacement till year 5-6.
Other standard laptop brands... 3 year is pushing it. They will legit turn into a furness that eats all your battery in half an hour by the 3rd year.
The number of students we get back in the day that ran in days before finals trying to get their laptop repaired only to die a few days later is so unbelievably high.
If you really can't get past 1000 dollars. Get a refurbish unit for the first year and save up enough to get a good one.
I flunk out of uni the first time since I got a shit laptop. Having to wait for it to load or deal with crashes just killed any willingness to learn.
Second time around... Got myself a MacBook air .. the studying experience is just phenomenal.
So please... Save up a few more weeks
I wouldn't buy a Surface of any sort - they look nice but longevity just isn't there.
Personally in the sub $1000 range I'd be going for an ex-lease ThinkPad T or X, or an HP EliteBook. Make sure the CPU is new enough to run Windows 11 (so 8th gen Intel), 16GB RAM and go for a traditional clamshell model (the 2 in 1 versions are less durable)
Otherwise check the Apple site for refurb MacBooks (but avoid the 8GB models, it isn't enough these days)
Sometimes just paying a little bit more can get you much better specs, but it wasn't as bad as you made it out to be in my experience. I've got a sub 1k laptop that's been going strong for three years now, and it's still pretty usable.
Keep in mind that's sub 1k 3 years ago. Things were cheaper then. 3 years ago 1k was the price for mid range laptop.
Maybe just me though. i do have unrealistic standards on computer speed ...... I should probably ground myself.
Second hand thinkpad, great build quality and pretty speedy for the price
Second hand M1 macbook air
This will be the best option for sure! There's plenty of seecond hand models on Trademe & they will hold up so much better.
I am starting college soon and I get a 100$ financial help from the government of my country. I am willing to use that money and more of my own if needed. I don’t know if I should get a windows or macbook, and what model to buy. I need it to be fast, lightweight, multitask and affordable (but take into account those 100$). People around me recommend to get an ipad, but honestly I think a laptop would be more useful. What should I get?
edit: I am doing a literature degree so I don’t need anything amazing, but I need it to be functional
Totally depends on your major. What do you need it to do well?
Plenty of cheaper laptops for majors that don't require high CPU/GPU demands.
I'd check groups for your college and major to figure out what you'll need.
Im doing a literature degree, but idk anyone from that school since its in another town. As an example: I am using a lenovo ideapad with 8gb of RAM, but 4gb had to be removed since they were from an external memory (or something like that lol) and it was causing problems. Right now Im working with only 4gb and its impossible to do anything, so I would like a fast laptop for mostly writing and reading documents, consuming media and doing several tasks such as processing text while on call or while watching a video (rn I cant even use word if any other app is running at the same time)
Whats the processor of your current laptop? Maybe get the 100$ allowance and use some of it to buy a 8-16gb ram stick(should be at least the same speed or faster than the installed RAM) and if possible an SSD (if you're laptop doesn't currently have one) and pocket the extra lol
If you are not studying a engineering or anything that requires anything more than integrated graphics. I would choose a 14 inch laptop, made of metal and with a long battery life and maybe something with a type C charger which comes in handy.
Now it depends on your budget. For 300 to 800 euros I would choose to buy a refurbished business windows laptop, something like a thinkpad T series, a dell latitude or a hp zbook, you just need to find them in Ebay from a professional refurbisher. Choose processors that are more or as modern as 8th gen i5 U and 16gb of RAM you can find that for 300 euros, but if you want something more modern likea 11th gen it would be around 600 euros. (In my area), they are enought for any everyday use, I sometimes use them for simple CAD projects and they can run it.
For more than 1000 euros a new macbook (don't buy them from the apple store as they don't offer discounts) is good they are well built they have long battery life, I have issues with them because of their lack of ports, compatibility issues, lack of upgradability and repairability, but they are great for students.
For more than 1200 euros if you don't get discounts for them, well you can get brand new thinkpads, dell latitudes and zbooks.
Those are the options that I look for the most. And maybe also add in framework 13 for more than 1300 euros if you want something repairable and upgradable
I personally daily drive a refurbished T480s with 16gb RAM and a i5 8350 u with 6 hours of battery for intense use, which cost me around 300 euros. And use as a desktop substitute an Acer nitro 5 with a i5 12450h and a rtx4060 which costed around 1000 euros (it's 16 inch, made of plastic making it quite brittle, at most 3 hours of battery it also takes a while to recharge, and 4 kg of weight with the charger which makes it unviable for me to carry around all day)
As I am a agricultural engineer student and I require mobility and long battery life to move around in the practice fields. And a dedicated graphics card for CAD and 3D modeling.
ThinkPad T series
A used Thinkpad maybe
need to make sure to get something that has a lot of battery life
I'm an international student from Malaysia. Im looking for a laptop for university and some light gaming. Im not familiar with Australian market for laptops so any advices from the locals?
Don't buy an Acer. Have a look at thedell outlet Also look at Ozbargain
Facebook market. I've picked up one for my kid for really cheap and in good condition. You just have to browse and do some research on the model
I've used https://renewd.com.au/ for some time, with good success. Hope you can find something that suits your needs, and budget!
Reebelo has refurbished laptops etc
I (F28) run a private school in Northeast India. I work with students from low-income backgrounds, we are in need of laptops primarily for basic functions like Word and Paint. Our classes operate with laptops plugged in, so battery life is not a concern for us.
Due to financial constraints, we're exploring avenues to acquire these devices inexpensively. I understand that these laptops don't need to be high-end; they just need to support Ms word and paint
If anyone knows of stores, online options, or programs where we can purchase or obtain laptops at a low cost, your assistance will significantly impact our students' education. We operate on alternative forms of payment, such as wood, grains, or seasonal goods, allowing us to make the most of whatever resources are available.
Please reach out if you have any information or suggestions that could help us in acquiring these laptops. Your support will directly benefit the education of our students.
Thank you for your consideration.
The specs will often be all over the place, but company foreclosure auctions will often have a random assortment of laptops for sale, and what's better for you is they can be sold in lots, so you might be able to get 20 of the same laptop for a rock bottom price. Or even going a step further you could ask a local company or a US firm if they could donate their old laptops next time they upgrade. Our firm just got brand new laptops for everyone in the company, so they had a raffle giving away ~75 laptops to the employees, I'm sure a company would be as amenable to giving them to a charitable cause as their employees.
Other than that, Chromebooks or similar might be a more affordable option, they're essentially computers that run on phone hardware so they tend to be way cheaper than a laptop, the only downside is it's ChromeOS so it might not have the same flexibility that an actual laptop would offer.
Thank you so much! We'll look into it
looking for an affordable laptop
I have liked the Lenovo Ideapad 5 or 3. I got one that was custom made for Best Buy that came with IPS LCD FHD screen, Ryzen 7 5700 and 12 gb and 512 SSD drive. I have had good luck with always getting 3 years out of the ideapad line even with heavy use. I saw in the US that both the Lenovo Ideapad 5 slim currently has good prices. I saw a couple of good ones at Staples and the Lenovo USA site. Highly recommend the AMD Ryzen 5 and 7 chips: good speed with low battery drain.
When I was shopping around,I liked the Dell Inspiron 15 with an intel i5 processor and 12 or 16 gb of memory. With the Dell Inspiron, the memory cards are replaceable. So, you can usually upgrade the memory later. Lenovo often has 4gb sautered, but you can usually upgrade to 12 if it comes with 8 quite easily.
I do think getting a 512 hard drive and 12gb memory is worth a little more.
What is your budget? There are so many options for decent laptops but quality nosedives pretty hard under a certain price.
maybe around USD500?
Are you open to refurbished models?
yes or course, as long as theyre working fine
Id get a refurbished MacBook Pro if your budget is around $500. Preferably one from 2019. I’ve had mine from 2019 still today and even my 2017 one. Both work great with no issues and the battery life on any Mac is the best you can get.
If you have an iPhone that makes it even better
And what's your top budget?
maybe around USD500?
Hey there! I heard you're on the hunt for an affordable laptop. I've got a great suggestion for you - the Modern 14 . It packs a punch with its 12th Gen Intel Core i3-1215U Processor and Windows 11 Home. The Intel Integrated UHD Graphics ensure smooth visuals on its 14" FHD display which offers snappy performance. Whether you're browsing the web, working on documents, or streaming your favorite shows, this laptop has got you covered without breaking the bank.
If you want to go very budget friendly - older Lenovo or Dell laptops with previous generation i7 processors can go from $100-$200 on eBay and are more than adequate for notetaking, programming, etc. but not for gaming, video or photoshop work. I buy older Dell Latitude laptops all the time and still use them (for example, I'm writing this right now on an old Dell Latitude e6410 i5 laptop from 2011 - still does most of what I need).
I bought a new dell latitude 5401 2019 edition for £600 (rrp £1100). It’s got the top end i5h processor so it is handles anything I throw at it. Uni work w like 40 tabs open (not an exaggeration) works smooth. Ableton with a tonne of programmes open is fine too.
You can get them cheap because they are the preferred laptop for offices. They are powerful, reliable and smart (not gimmicky, but professional). Offices will often Chuck out entire ranges due to upgrades and they’ll sell fully working laptops for pennies.
Yep!! Older Dell office laptops are a bargain!
Any HP laptop above $300 but less than $600 will be as fast and accessible as you need anything below is low quality trash and anything above is excessive
what are you planning to do with the computer that you want to buy? (as in which programs would you ideally run for studying?)
I got the older model from Best Buy works just like the new ones since I’m basically just using notes apps etc. but I found it better than a laptop plus reading etextbooks are easier too and usually cheaper than a physical book
buy a surface pro 4, its cheap af on ebay, nobody knows bout this, i really wanna buy it but my country doesnt have ebay, so i let the secret out
edit: dude s from the same country as me :(
I’m not sure what your budget is, but you can get a ninth generation base model ipad for $270 from Best Buy rn! That with a budget keyboard & smart stylus should get more than the bare minimum done!
Get a nice T480 or T490. ThinkPads are where's at.
iPad with keyboard is pretty nice plus light and you can take it anywhere
Not at all lol. But If you’re interested in a good value tablet I’d recommend the Samsung galaxy tab s7 or s7 plus if you need a bigger screen. It’s really cheap compared to the iPad and comes with a pen included unlike the iPad. There’s the s7 FE edition which is even cheaper than the regular s7 with minor differences.
Chromebooks under 300 dollars are ok, but slow. Most students can get by, but I'm one that can't. I also need Photoshop, and other desktop apps on the systems.
Ipads also work as entry level laptops with improvements every year.
Hello. I'm not very techy when it comes to tech talk kaya hindi ko alam what I should look for sa isang laptop. This is what I have in mind sana huhu, I hope you guys can help me out/recommend laptops.
Thank you!!!
Lenovo Ideapad Kung for documents lang powerpoint word excel facebook youtube kdrama pwede na yan. Pang school use pwedeng pwede na
Hello, i’m not sure if aabot yung 20k since depende sa specs ng laptop yung price. But for meee Lenovo brand ang aking bias because mine is still working. 2018 ko pa sha binili and it’s still alive and kicking. never ko rin napadala sa service center, tho gaming laptop kasi to which by that time 45k ko na bili. Pero what I always recommend to my friends is yung specs na dapat hanapin mo sa laptop:
u can get a cheaper laptop then get a 1TB hard drive nalang for 3k. Buy sa original shop para safe!!
Lenovo talaga OP.
Please for the love of god try to get one with an 1080p IPS panel. Don't get a TN one.
Sincerely, from someone who faced their laptops 24/7 and hated every minute of it. Got it upgraded just for review cuz I would just go mad lol
i’m starting college in the fall and need a new laptop. can’t stand macbooks so definitely windows interface. need compact so i can carry it around and a touchscreen. other than that i’ll basically just use it to write papers and watch movies so don’t need something so advanced. would appreciate the help! my budget is reasonable but not crazy expensive as my parents will be gifting it to me.
I only have 2 Touch Laptops and a few 2-in-1's if you are interested in them. These are all sorted by CPU performance first:
--->> TouchScreen
14" | Ryzen 5 340 | 16GB LPDDR5X | 512GB SSD | 8-12Hrs | Win11 | PassMark: 20095
16" | Core 5 210H | iGPU | 16GB DDR5 (32GB Max) | 512GB SSD | PassMarK: 18801
--->> 2-in-1
14" | Ryzen 5 340 | 16GB LPDDR5X | 512GB SSD | 8-12Hrs | Win11 | PassMark: 20095
14" | 8640HS | 8GB DDR4 | 512GB SSD | 8-12Hrs | Win11 | PassMark: 19911
They can get your around 9hrs on average as per their advertised on website. It totally depends on your usage. You can light game on the AMD processors. please be aware that the Ryzen AI 5 340 is concentrated more on performance rather than gaming, so light gaming.
You can moderate gaming on 8640HS or 8840HS depending on your budget at the customization page. For the 8GB Models, you may need to buy anohter 8GB stick separately and upgrade them at later time.
If you want normal laptops without fancy features,
15.6" | Ultra 5 225U | 16GB DDR4 | 512GB SSD | PassMark: 19301
15.6" | 7730U | iGPU | 32GB RAM | 1TB SSD | PassMark: 18024
15.6" | 7535HS | 16GB DDR4 | 512GB SSD | PassMark: 17953
15.6" | i5-13420H | iGPU | 16GB RAM | 512GB SSD | PassMark: 17593
wow i have no idea what any of this means
HP OmniBook Ultra Flip x360 14
i don’t have an exact budget but this is definitely over it haha
And what's your budget?
don’t have exact but looking on the cheaper and simpler side
Since you are not going to do any heavy tasks, and you prefer touchscreen, I would recommend this Lenovo Flex 5 because of the following:
Specs:
Why I am recommending it:
Low Cost: Usually most 2 in 1 laptops are on the expensive side, or come with much weaker Specs, not in this case though.
Good battery life of around 6-8 hours with general usage which is suitable for web browsing and displaying music.
Good Connectivity Multiple ports, including USB Type-C, USB 3.2, HDMI, and a microSD card reader, for better device compatibility
Digital Pen compatible
Lightweight as it weighs around 4lbs .
Very good CPU for write papers and watch movies.
Long battery life .

Did you have a go with the Lenovo 720S or the 320s for a cheaper laptop. Also the HP Envy 13 is a nice choice.
Stopped listening after he said not Chromebooks. Absolute best way to get a budget laptop that you won't have to replace or complain about being slow in a short time.
Would disagree, especially for something like the Pixelbook (which is simply too expensive for a chromebook). It may be okay if you know your workload will 100% be basic document writing and browsing, but otherwise not a great option.
Pixelbook is a complete outlier in ChromeOS. I have one because I'd been using Chromebooks for 5 years and have a PC for the one thing every two months I can't use it for (not counting games) and won a bet so decided to treat myself to the best of the best in my favourite OS. I haven't been disappointed.
Don't know what he was talking about for the rest of the video but in the budget (probably £100 to £400 range) I wouldn't recommend anything but a Chromebook. You're guaranteed to have a device that doesn't deteriorate for years. So many people I know complained about problems with their Windows laptops even at prices above this.
I've been looking at the Samsung notebook 9 pro 13" for the start of term. Does anyone have any experience with this 2 in 1 laptop and would you recommend?
I already have a gaming PC but I need a good laptop to open a lot of tabs, maybe a i3 or r3, no CPU intensive tasks or gaming. Just a lot of ram or slot for me to install another ram to open many tabs word, power point etc. Big screen to read articles and write and optionally light weight to carry it around.
Check out vivobooks by asus.
Second this. My Vivobook with R5 2500U integrated graphics is pretty decent and does its job. OP said it's for student use. My experience, I can open multiple Chrome tabs while running Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Also can run SPSS too. I'm a final year business degree student, and using the laptop for 4 years, just for reference.
Never used for any Photoshop, Blender or something like that.
In my country, it's considered a budget one, MYR 2000 or USD 500.
We need more information in order to be able to help, for example, which country are you going to buy from and is battery life or screen quality a concern? and what’s your budget?
Brazil, battery life is a concern because I'm using it on uni, screen quality is not a concern, just screen size. Anything below 500 dollars would be awesome.
I am not sure what would be available in brazil, but I would look for acer aspire 5, or lenovo ideapad 3, the low config should be within your price range.
Are you able to suggest any sites to look for laptops in brazil. I have no idea where to look
Impossible to suggest unless you specify a budget. Like I could suggest you a ThinkPad Gen 3 E series of your budget is like $800. Or a HP pavilion series if your budget is less $600-700.
Less than 500 if possible
Probably an ideapad from Lenovo?
Go on ebay and find the cheapest Thinkpad L580 thats in good condition and has an 8th gen i5 or i7 (for the quad core). Fix up the RAM and SSD yourself as much as you need to.
