TL;DR The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 is generally favored over the HP Pavilion due to better performance and build quality, but consider refurbished business laptops for potentially better value.
Performance and Specifications
When comparing the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 and HP Pavilion, many users highlight Lenovo's superior specifications. The IdeaPad often has better CPU options, more RAM, and SSD storage compared to HP models that might use slower components like Celeron processors and eMMC storage [1:2]
[1:5]. For basic college tasks such as writing papers and browsing the internet, the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 offers a smoother experience.
Build Quality and Design
Lenovo's build quality is frequently praised, with fewer reported issues regarding hinges and overall durability compared to HP [3:1]
[3:5]. Some users find Lenovo's keyboard layout awkward due to left-sided trackpads and numpads
[2:3], while others appreciate the comfort of Lenovo's slightly curved key design
[5:2]. HP keyboards are described as cramped with flat keys, which may not be ideal for prolonged typing sessions.
Price and Value
For those on a strict budget, Lenovo tends to offer better value for money, especially in terms of gaming capabilities and additional features like gaming software [5:1]. However, both brands can be limiting at a $300 price point, and users suggest considering refurbished business laptops from platforms like eBay for greater longevity and performance
[1:7]
[2:5].
Alternative Recommendations
Several commenters recommend looking beyond these entry-level models if possible. Refurbished ThinkPads or EliteBooks are suggested as they offer robust performance and reliability for students [1:4]
[1:6]. Additionally, ASUS Vivobook models were mentioned as potential alternatives for those willing to increase their budget
[3:4].
Ultimately, while the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 is favored for its specs and build quality, exploring refurbished options could provide a better balance of cost and performance for college needs.
I am absolutely helpless when it comes to laptop knowledge. I just need it to finish my bachelor’s degree in CJ, I don’t game or anything crazy. And my budget is $300. Which would you get
Lenovo 100%. The HP would be really slow due to it likely having a celeron and Emmc storage. For basic schoolwork the Lenovo would be fine.
I have had similar Lenovo Ideapads. I have really liked them. I never have had hinge issues or anything bad. I tend upgrade after 4 years because I am not sure it worth putting in extra money by replacing the hard drive.
The Lenovo IdeaPad 3i is the "better" option.
Both machines are ultimately terrible and are being sold by sketchy, third party vendors through Amazon, so don't expect warranty support if something goes wrong as both machines are already several years old.
I'd pick the lenovo.
What would be really perfect at that pricepoint would be a used thinkpad tho. Something like a used X1 Carbon Gen 8 would be a 10X or more better experience overall than those laptops.
Oh the Lenovo sweeps it easily, it’s got an actual SSD, more storage, a better CPU, more ram, and WiFi 6.
theres nothing saying the CPU is better though, just that its a 4 core. For all we know it could be those crappy 4 core celerons
At that price point, a refurbished business laptop on eBay will blow these two out of the water.
Here's some examples: https://ebay.us/m/2sBCUj https://ebay.us/m/Dh85xd https://ebay.us/m/NloPY1
This is the right answer. I have had both the ThinkPad and the Elitebook for work and neither let me down. Able to do data analysis with Spyder and PowerBI and run some pretty large spreadsheets.
Word and PowerPoint go without saying. Neither ever let me down - unlike my gaming laptop which is currently on its 3rd motherboard repair...
I am absolutely helpless when it comes to laptop knowledge. I just need it to finish my bachelor’s degree in CJ, I don’t game or anything crazy. And my budget is $300. Which would you get
Of those 2, that particular Lenovo is leagues better than the HP option. That said, neither are amazing choices. $300 doesn't buy you a whole lot of laptop, and you'll really feel it's age in just a couple years
If you really wanna put $300 to the best use, I'd probably suggest something like this.
Laptops lose their value very quickly, so you can find great deals on high end business laptops that are only a couple years old, and haven't been put through the ringer. Your money will go a lot further this way, and you'll get a lot more longevity out of your device (while probably also not getting as frustrated with it)
Lenovo has better specs which is what I usually go for. I have a thinkpad myself with a similar layout, but just a personal warning/critique.
I HATE Lenovo's left-sided trackpad and the keyboard numpad. It feels so awkward IMO. Maybe it's cause I'm used to 14 inch HPs/13 in Macbook Pros but yeah, just saying.
If you have to choose between the two I would go with the Lenovo for sure. I know this isn’t possible for everyone, but I would definitely look into expanding that budget some more. Once you hit the 600 dollar range you’ll really start getting more bang for your buck when it comes to laptops! Always try to stay above 16GB of DDR4 RAM! Hope this helps
RAM is king, so I would personally go for the laptop with 20GB of RAM but both will be perfectly fine for school work. You just want to stay away from Chromebooks and anything with less than 16 gigs of RAM. Not all laptops these days are upgradeable when it comes to RAM, so it's important to be above 16 GB for quality of life.
I have both (not these particular laptops, but both brands), and I love and prefer Lenovo by far. The HP is my backup (my Lenovo is currently in Texas getting repairs because my dog cracked my screen and broke a hinge), and I'm not a fan. It seems slower and clunkier. If you can expand your budget to $600, you will get a laptop that will last you a bit longer. If you can't expand your budget, the Lenovo is still your best bet.
I want a new laptop for university works ,social media and general movies and songs .Mostly need it for writing tasks (uni+content writing) . I dont do heavy gaming/graphics . I narrowed it down to two similar laptops but one is hp 15s and other is lenovo ideapad. I've heard hp sometimes has keyboard issues is that true? Let me know your recommendations!
Lenovo ThinkPads are great for schoolwork
Hi could you suggest an affordable thinkpad model?
I do not know your budget or income so i cannot say what affordable is for you. If you mean cheapest, then im sure you can figure that out easily.
what about thinkpad E
Depends on your use case. For school i would use an E. For office work i would take an L series. but it depends on the line of work you do. Often your employer would bestow you a work computer so there is not much to do there.
It also depends on the amount of travel you do and how you use it. A more sturdy and light T or X series might suit you better, but they are more expensive,
Buy none. If in USA, buy this one
Buy this laptop from Costco.
$900 plus taxes - comes with 2 years of warranty. Real Macbook killer.

What else you want? Metallic body, Oled screen, sound hinge, very light weight-around 1.6 Kg, solid speakers, enough ports, very good battery life(easily 7-9 hours), enough memory, light games, very good for work and students, enough ports(no need to have dongle), silver color(not getting finger prints), screen size is also very good, cooling is very good(understand that Asus optimized it a lot during the last 10 months-vents are improved), storage can be increased though memory cannot, Processor has NPU also, wifi and bluetooth are very stable.
If you don't like Windows 11, well you can install dual boot Ubuntu Linux. Understand - one need to have Windows to run everything. Better to upgrade PCIe NVME to 2 TB and have dual boot Ubuntu Linux 24.x LTS along with Windows 11. This will easily last 5+ years.
Also no warranty, internal plastic skeleton and zero quality control.
Asus is metal
Don't go for HP if you want your hinges to last.
Think pads for work/study all day
Could you suggest an affordable model?
HP. Lenovo Ideapad purchased December 2023 backlit LED failed in July 2025, out of 1-Year Warranty. HP and Apple hardware issues are rare. For example, I am typing this post on a 2015 HP Zbook 15 laptop and have had zero hardware issues with it (had 3 year warranty). AVOID LENOVO.
Started college late and now I have a with wife and one year old. Gaming is one of my hobbies and I’ve always wanted a gaming PC. But with a baby running around I don’t actually have the space for a desktop. Plus the convenience of a laptop is a huge plus for school/work. So I was looking at the ryzen AMD Lenovo ideapad gaming 3 simply for battery life BUT I like Intel for work and it’s performance. I’m not a huge competitive gamer but I do like triple A games like call of duty. What processor do you guys recommend for the ideapad or what laptops do you recommend for someone like me? I’m also not extremely tech savvy so any details you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
TBH, as long as you don't run extensive programs and open many tabs simultaneously, the difference is hardly noticeable. Intel chips on the Ideapad platforms are a little more expensive, though not by much. If you're starting college, I strongly suggest you buy a newer laptop with 13th gen chips and DDR5 RAM. With that said, have you checked out Lenovo's LOQ line? They offer some excellent budget options as well and are more geared toward gaming and kinds of stuff.
Thank you for replying so fast! I actually havent looked at the LOQ. Besides price why else would you say they are better than the ideapad?
Mainly good price to performance and decent build quality. And for just 949 it's excellent really
Lenovo LOQ 15 4060 (105w) https://www.ebay.com/itm/295742115620
They’re just a tier under Legion gaming machine. LOQ in person looks more modern than ideapad. Visit a store and feel it in person. I’m a student myself , got the legion (my classes hardly last 3hrs/day)
get the LOQ, they're the newer version of the ideapad gaming 3
They both have ryzen 7 4800h 8 core 16 thread, Gtx 1650 ti , 8GB And the same price And please don't just say HP is better or lenovo is better tell me why for example : The cooling system in HP/Lenovo is better in this laptop model
Do you even advice me to buy one of them or do you advice me to buy something else The price is 1000$ in my country
I know their real prices are around 800$ but they cost 1000$ due to taxes and import fees
Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**
16000 EGP
No
Performance and battery
Don't care
17.3 but if expensive Iam ok with 15.6
Unreal engine , blender (Game development) Programming CSGO
CSGO , competitive settings
Don't care too much but care more about keyboard
I have been researching the same question. I have to say I am working on an older HP pavilion (which is dying) and I must say that the build quality was sturdier in the past - heavier, but with zero flex anywhere. Overall, I think the build quality between your choices is equivalent - both are better the non-gaming pavilions and cheaper non-gaming ideapad 3s and 5s. I think the Lenovo has a better keyboard, the keys have slightly curved indents, which are very comfortable. HP's keys are flat and personally I can't look at green keys all the time. Both laptops are upgradeable, but I think Lenovo is a bit better because for your 2nd drive, you can choose between 2.5 ssd (which I can steal from my old computer for free) or add an NVMe. With HP, the 2nd drive must be a 2.5. Both run dual channel 3200 ddr4 sodimm RAM, so that's the same. Both have similar flex resistance in the keyboard area - decent, not great, but better than non-gaming Pavilions and IdeaPad 5s as I mentioned above. Cooling isn't a serious issue for either laptop. In the r/Lenovo subreddit, there are some examples of Lenovo bios upgrade and hinge issues, but it looks like they are mostly related to the legion 5. That said, I might still push the budget a little and go for the legion 5 because my use is not gaming, but for office work, photoshop and illustrator work and I am thinking about future video editing. In that respect, the screens are adequate, but at 45% NTSC and 250 nits both, not the best, especially if you game. The legion 5 can be had with 60hz, 120hz, and 144hz screens and the 60 & 144 can have nearly 100% sRGB color gamut @ 300 nits (120hz is 250 nits). As to the R7 4800H, I've seen some reviews that say the R5 4600H is a better match for the 1650ti - and a little cheaper, as well. Additionally, I think the 2021 Lenovos are going to upgrade the graphics from the 1650ti. I am not sure about the HPs. I hope this helps you decide.
Both these are excellent products with R7 4800h. When comparing both of these, it really comes down to preference and availability. If that's covered and you can readily buy any of these, then compare the screen refresh rate. As you have esports title enlisted, higher will be better.HP has a model with the R7 and 144 Hz with 1650ti, while lenovo will be with R7 and up-to 120 Hz with 1650ti.If you have the option to buy HP with 144Hz, go for it.Battery backup is similar in both, along with similar thermals. The lenovo has two m.2 pcie nvme slot with option for 2.5'' HDD/SSD slot, while HP has 1 m.2 and HDD/SSD slot.HP comes with SD card slot[big], Lenovo does not.HP has one 2.0 USB + one 3.x USB while lenovo has two 3.x USB.Rest is same with same screen brightness and NTSC.
Also ideapad has privacy shutter for web cam.
The hp laptop model is ec1007ne I think it has 120hz not sure though , if the both have the same screen is there any difference in the material ?
No such difference, plastic build, but sturdy enough for everyday usage as in travel or college, again it comes down to availability, if you want it ASAP, you should buy which ever has the closest service center to your convenience and comes with warranty or option for extended warranty.
i will go with Lenovo because of several reasons :
For the price note ,it is true , in my country the Lenovo is cheaper 75$
yep lenovo reduce their looks budget so its much worth.
Hi, I am going into my freshman year of college next year and wanted to get a quality device to go through school with. All three of these fit my budget just fine but wanting some outside feed back please. I am currently trying to choose between the:
HP Pavilion x360
IdeaPad Flex 5
and IdeaPad 3
Thanks for the help!
Does it have to be one of those options, if not, then We need more information in order to be able to help, for example, which country are you going to buy from and is battery life or screen quality a concern? And what’s your budget?
Any one of your devices would be great! If you prefer a stylus, definitely go with the Flex 5 or x360. The IdeaPad 3 is a great buy for general use. Honestly, of you want the best bang-for-the-buck, (and your schools allows it), then maybe a Chromebook would be a good fit!
saw this deal for a lenovo idea pad gaming 3 for $150. Worth it? Not looking to run super high end games but just to play for fun sometimes so i was wondering if this laptop could withstand that
Need laptop for college. Which one would be better? I'm planning to also get a tablet which would probably be a Samsung.
Intel EVO, 8g ram, 256 ssd.
GTF out of there
Dont even bother. Get something with at least I5, 16gb ram, 512 ssd
AT LEAST.
Any recommendations? Less than 800 if possible
Buy the cheapest Lenovo you can get with 16gb ram
What major are you studying?
I don't have a clue yet maybe CS or business
You should get at least 16gb ram. You could look at the ideapad from Lenovo.
Don't get 8 gb version. Believe me is a cut on the price but it will be a pain in a couple of months if you work study on it. Even 16gb can be slow sometimes
8 gig of ram and 256 ssd, get something with at least 16 and 512
Thanks but I would only need hopefully 8 and 256. Not using it for gaming or anything just school files etc.
8GB is not enough.
Hle if ur going in college and will only code and will not play games then I suggest u go with book 3 base or book 4. See u can even play gta 5 and all I have played on my book 3. But see I am not hardcore gamer i mostly code on my laptop and I am also in college and since u have said u will buy a tablet better don't go for 360.
See I have i7 book 3 just see that laptop and off course u must go with 512 SSD.
See this book 3 will give u premium feel. Yes u will get many suggestions of those high end specs laptop under the same price of book 3 or 4 but for college I feel go with book3 or 4 i7 variant and premium feel
It's around 460 usd I want it for digital art and some light gaming Here's the specs (I don't know anything about laptops)
What digital art program will you mainly use? Maybe pick one based on the recommended specs. Also, try to find a laptop with better igpu. In case you want to explore 3d modeling. Vroid, blender, etc. Or even rigging.
there is nothing 'gaming' about this laptop. the 7520u is from late 2022, its zen2 architecture and is not great for real gaming. its ok for simple and non-demanding games. its great for outlook, google chrome, word, excel, openshot, gimp, audacity, etc.
its not a slow machine, but in my area, 460usd for this is not a go-out-and-grab-it price. i can pick up a relatively new 5800u / 6800u machine for the same price, which is a zen 3 and handle mid level game.
Try and get something with an AMD 780M, or even one gen older 680M iGPU. You'll have to search the CPU of each model you're looking at to find the iGPU it has. The 6/780M iGPUs are good enough for light gaming etc, and you can get a good deal on sale or a refurb if you look around. But make sure it has at least 16GB of RAM minimum (preferably more), as the iGPU relies on RAM for video memory.
I agree with this. I currently have the Ideapad Slim 5 with Ryzen 7 8845HS with Radeon 780M, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB storage, 2k 16” OLED screen. Ordered through the Lenovo website so I got a steep discount and got it for~800USD (converted from PHP).
It does everything I throw at it: office work, medium to heavy gaming. Older games run at 120fps or more at high settings, recent AA games run around 80-100fps high settings, native res, while newer AA titles run at 45-60 fps, medium settings at native res. You can scale newer titles down to 1920x1080 for higher fps and still see clear images. Or use FSR instead.
I haven’t been editing photos or videos on this laptop yet, but I suppose, it would handle these tasks well, too. The 32GB of RAM helps a lot as 4GB is dedicated to the iGPU by default.
Is this for straight cash payment only?
On god don't i have one and it is absolute trash even for some tasks
I am interested in buying this laptop but have no idea if it is decent would love some help from people who know more about this stuff then me I will be just using it for studying Netflix light bit of gaming nothing to crazy really
how much
From office works it’s $797
