Lenovo IdeaPad 3 Battery Life Review

TL;DR The Lenovo IdeaPad 3, particularly the gaming models, generally have poor battery life due to their power-hungry components. Expect around 1.5 to 4 hours of usage under typical conditions, with some users experiencing even less.

Battery Performance

The Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 is known for its disappointing battery life, especially when compared to other laptops in similar categories. Users report battery durations ranging from 1.5 to 4 hours during light productivity tasks like using MS Word or browsing [2:1][4:6]. The battery's capacity is often cited as a major limitation, with many models featuring only a 45Wh battery [4:1][4:5].

Factors Affecting Battery Life

Several factors can significantly impact battery performance on the IdeaPad 3. High refresh rate displays and power-hungry GPUs contribute to rapid battery drainage [2:3][4:1]. Adjusting settings such as refresh rates and undervolting the GPU might help extend battery life [4:2]. However, these adjustments may not always lead to substantial improvements.

User Experiences

Many users express frustration over the battery life, noting that it doesn't meet expectations set by manufacturer claims [2:4][4:4]. Some users have resorted to keeping their laptops plugged in most of the time due to the short battery duration [3:2][4:8]. Despite the battery issues, users generally find the laptop satisfactory for gaming within its capabilities [3:3].

Troubleshooting and Recommendations

For those experiencing battery issues, Lenovo suggests troubleshooting steps such as adjusting battery settings, checking for resource-draining programs, and running hardware scans [5:1]. While these steps may help identify potential issues, they often don't resolve the underlying problem of limited battery capacity.

In summary, if battery life is a critical factor for you, the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 may not be the best choice, especially if you plan to use it unplugged frequently. Consider other models or brands that offer larger batteries or more efficient components if longer battery life is essential.

ORIGINAL POST

I bought a Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 back in September of 2021 and have never really heavily used it for gaming, I mostly got it so that it is good enough for my gaming needs when needed, and so it's very efficient when doing normal administrative stuff at work (I was a college professor at the time). It has served me very well, definitely is the best laptop I've ever owned because it still acts like it's nearly new now in May 2025...with the exception of battery life. I can't point to a specific time of noticing it but I have been quite disappointed that it only lasts, at best, 1.5 hours even on a full charge, even when I have relatively little things open and running on the laptop (google chrome, discord, and spotify, point is I'm not doing notably power-hungry things like a bunch of gaming). I replaced the battery recently with one I got via Amazon and found no improvement, and similarly found no improvement with a new charger either.

Am I just going crazy and this is actually a reasonable battery life, or what could I be missing here? I'm happy to provide any extra info as needed to help troubleshoot, if I am right to be suspicious. It's very frustrating to be at events that are on the longer side and to only be able to have 1.5h of battery life even when just taking simple notes.

Gaming laptops just don't have a good battery life, they're optimised for strong performance in a small package. Battery is a nice extra on such devices but never good for extensive on-the-go working. Make sure you run it in energy saving mode to get most out of it.

Be careful and double check if the variant you will get can change refresh rates, I got the ryzen 5 5600h with 3050ti and a 165hz display. My variant unfortunately is stuck at 165hz (i cant go down to 60hz) so that sucks since high refresh rate eats a lot of power. My estimate battery life is more or less 3 hours with balance mode on and battery saver mode on, 70-80% brightness and just doing light work (ms word, browsing, watching youtube videos). I have not tried the quiet mode yet so idk if that will help.

Edit: Fixed some typos

when the specs say its 7 hrs, its more like 4-5 hours max real usage. Remember, they test battery runtime with special software, everything is off, including wifi and the sw runs some basic tasks, like playing a video in a loop or smth.

Your standard usage is going to be miles away from that. Youtube playing music? Using a bluetooth mouse? Screen at 100%? All of this (and more) is going to significantly reduce the estimate from specs.

If you go into the bios and turn the gpu from switchable graphics to uma you get 6-8 hours of battery. I did this on mine and it lasts all day.

I’ve seen mixed reviews about this laptop. I understand it’s a budget one, and that’s what I’m looking for. I’m not looking to play triple AAA games on this really, more older and simpler games, maybe some single player games. Lots of reviews I’ve seen include the battery draining a lot while plugged in, not working/dying after a few weeks/months. It seems like people are getting defected ones. Anyone with this laptop or more knowledge care to give some feedback I’d really appreciate before I blow $600 lol.

Gaming laptops (exc. some niche and expensive models like the g14 and the Legion Slim) are generally heavy and thick so I won't consider as much of a con as the following.

The two biggest offenders are the battery and the screen. The battery is really bad, like really bad, I make some compromises and adjustments and still never surpass the 5 hour mark. I rate Lenovo high but still don't know what were they smoking when they decided to pack a 45Whr battery in a gaming laptop. Or actually I do... To save costs.

You see Lenovo is a top global manufacturer. It floods the market with A LOT of laptops, with different brand names but if you look closely to the version number they are basically all the same with subtle differences. For example, 15ACH6 is the same version number of Legion 5 and IdeaPad Gaming 3. 14ACN6 is the same number as IdeaPad 5, IdeaPad 5 Pro, IdeaPad 5 Slim, IdeaPad 5 Flex... And yes they share almost all components, different branding, depending it it's EU, North America, Asia or Africa market.

They do this to save up costs of R&D and recycle more the last generation parts like Apple does (but take in consideration Apple computers are even higher priced!).

The other point is why put the same or better battery on the budget version rather than on the Pro? Think of this like Apple does with iPhones... If they spec up the base model no one is going to buy the Pro or Pro Max.

The final point, they thought they can grab even more cash by selling a higher capacity battery in their website and the replacement service (yes because if you replace it yourself the warranty voids).

Now, the screen is very dim, you'll have to ramp up the brightness to max but even you won't see shit in daylight (ha! are you thinking the same? the higher the brightness the more battery juice it sucks).

Regarding colour accuracy it's very shitty (45% NTSC), again it's pronounced more with the dim screen. Especially nowadays that we have good quality smartphones, TVs and tablets. It's noticeable for content consumption, not a huge deal breaker (and you can make some adjustments) but absolutely NOT recommended for serious photo/video editing or any simulation that requires good colour and contrast.

So the screen is terrible but you'll get the same in the same budget gaming laptops league.

The battery is the worse thing if you like the portability side of things. Other users will say: jUsT plUg iT bcZ it'Z a GaMinG LapToP. Which is low-effort rationale, we bought a gaming laptop because it's portable, and we also use for other tasks. At that point we would rather buy a Steam Deck or console.

Regarding performance performance this thing is a BEAST. It's my first gaming laptop and my model is the RTX 3050 and doesn't break a sweat. Being able to pull 100+ FPS on High settings without worrying too much is the close you can get to a console experience.

TL;DR: If you're okay with the worst brand new battery and screen you've ever bought and it's all the money you have GO FOR IT. If you can throw more money buy the LEGION.

Thanks for the great info. I’m probably gonna build a PC next summer when I’m more free and stable. Just wanted to get a taste of pc gaming and didn’t want to spend a lot. I’m going to keep it plugged in about 95% of the time and buy a 170wh or 230wh charger brick. Thanks again.

Tbh, I wanted to build a PC last year too! But the increasing PC parts' costs and affordable consoles (the Series S) and gaming laptops kinda convinced me to wait a couple years. I think you won't regret buying this laptop. Let me know if you need any help later.

I bought my laptop that has GTX1650 and Ryzen 4600h about two or three weeks ago but when not plugged to the charger, battery goes off 1 percent like in every one to two minutes and sometimes less even when not in heavy load. Is this normal considering that Ideapads are not high end laptops or should I take it to the service?

Try to force 60Hz instead default 120Hz, this link explains everything if You dont have that option in your system

https://github.com/mohitbhatt-du/refresh\_rate\_fix\_for\_lig3

Also looks like undervolting gpu was forcing bigger power draw on battery because of higher clocks on lower voltage,

when working on battery set your gpu to default clocks.

Before my battery usage was between 25-38 watt, now it shows between 6-8 to max 15-18 Watt power draw.

Battery time changed from 1h 30 minutes to something around 4 hours, it depends ofcourse what you will be doing on your laptop.

Maybe its only on my ideapad gaming 3 with rtx 3050 but I see significant change after those steps.

I hope it will help someone because I was alsonstruggling with weirdly low battery time.

It has a relatively small battery for its size at 45Wh. And it uses power hungry components. Lenovo states a duration of up to 6.7 hours and when you consider how these measurements work and that you don't really want to constantly deplete your battery to 0%, I wouldn't really expect much more than 4 hours in the best case scenario. All of this while using the Vega iGPU, reduced brightness and doing very light tasks. Heavy gaming will deplete the battery in less than an hour, just considering the TDP of the single components.

What you can do is make sure you're using the battery saving profile, the iGPU instead of the dedicated one and that all unnecessary programs are prevented from launching automatically at startup.

If you want to eliminate any doubt, find reviews where they explicitly state their methodology for battery testing, reproduce it and confront the results.

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 i7-1255U/16 battery life issue

Posted by Dunker04 · in r/Lenovo · 2 months ago

Hi! I have a Lenovo IdeaPad 3 i7-1255U/16 laptop i bought around a year ago. When i got it i already noticed at the start that the battery life wasn't as good as my former laptop. Now, a year on, my battery barely lasts 2 hours on a full charge from doing simple things as just watching YouTube (with full screen brightness on though)

My question is: Is it really normal for a battery life to be this bad for a laptop this new, even with full screen brightness on? Or is there something wrong?

Hi there! Thanks for reaching out, we're here to assist you.

Consider doing the troubleshooting steps in order to resolve the battery issue:

  1. You can adjust the battery setting to extend Performance.

  2. Run taskmgr (start, run and type that). See if any program / programs are utilizing a lot of CPU and draining resources.

  3. Under Lenovo Vantage, go to Power ---> See Battery Details.

  4. Go back and go to Hardware Scan, Customize, and Run a hardware scan on the battery to see if there's a problem.

As a general note: To prolong the shelf life of your battery, it is recommended to run charging in Conservation Mode when you don't require the laptop all day and don't mind 60% battery. As charging to 100%, discharging, and recharging will shorten the shelf life of a battery.

If you read the battery rating it's usually based off text editing on 10% screen brightness with wifi and Bluetooth turned off. Watching videos is considered high battery load due to that light load on the GPU. If its rated at 6-8 hours, 1-2 of video is about right.

Battery test times is like EPA rating for cars. The advised rating is for driving a circular track on flat land at 55 mph.

If you drive uphill (use more CPU and GPU), drive over 60 (fans running 100%, 100% of time) you will get less battery time.

LPIII Battery Life

Posted by oromis7901 · in r/LightPhone · 4 months ago

Just wanted to share my personal experience with my first cycle of the LPIII battery.

Day 1: phone arrived 70% charged. I charged to 100% at around 9am.

Day 2: Woke up with phone at 80%. Pretty good considering I had a ton of usage and playing around with it. This day, I traveled out of state with the phone and used the camera with videos and photos quite heavily. I had a couple of phone calls and also, a lot of people wanted to see my phone so it was passed around and played with a ton all day.

Day 3: woke up with phone at around 30% battery. No big usage this day. Some MMS and calls. Added some music to the phone.

Day 4: just woke up with battery at 10%. I think I’ll charge it just in case but honestly I could probably go almost all day with it.

Overall, WOW the battery life is so great. I can’t believe some reviewers said they got a day? Absolutely disingenuous. With my own usage, I can expect 3 days easy and can likely stretch to a full 4th day. I am using Verizon and turned off data roaming and Bluetooth.

Hope this helps!

All this Chromebook hate from people who never used them lol.

No windows PC for this price will have an equivalent build quality or speed. The os is so lightweight it can run on a toaster and load up web apps in seconds. (which is what most consumers use their laptops for anyway)

It's not meant to replace your Razer blade stealth.

It's a desktop browser experience which no iPad can offer. Add in the Android apps and Linux programs as a bonus.

Honestly! To those of you who haven’t used a Chromebook in a few years, the hardware has improved. The Celeron N4000 series, which is the lowest new x86 offering, has made its way into new Chromebooks and single core performance is up 33%-50%, which is essential for web tasks. Give em a chance!

The article says users can perform basic task with this dinner plate. I doubt any tasks other than consuming all of your digital privacy will be performed on this while you wait for a youtube video to buffer. The reality is, this is a really bad laptop or a mediocre iPad at best. This is made for children who quickly figure out for themselves that these things are no where near as fast as mom and dad's phones.

4gb with a 1.1gHz processor and 32gb total storage is basically a paper weight with wifi connectivity.

If you want a real computer where your data isn't the sole focus, buy a refurbished Dell Optiplex, keyboard, and a monitor.

But the base model iPad 7th gen 10.2 is 329 at 32gb storage and 429 at 128 gb at bestbuy. Half of the price is a bit off if we are talking only web browsing, emailing, neflix watching, and social media consuming while having something to take notes on in school.

What on earth-

The use case for a chromebook is completely different than for a full blown desktop computer, regardless of pricing.

You get a Chromebook so you have a super cheap email 'n netflix machine that's easier to type on than a phone. It's meant to be carried around the house or between classes. That's all. This isn't probably the best machine for a price-perf ratio for this job, but it'll do.

It's a Lenovo Ideapad 3 laptop, i turned on the conservation mode a week ago, before that I used it randomly: plugged in, used from place to place etc. now i use it mostly plugged in with the conservation mode enabled, i rarely unplug it because of the battery.

/u/Reasonable_Bag_118 Hey! Thanks for reaching our support! The Lenovo's Battery Conservation Mode is designed to extend the lifespan of your laptop's battery, especially when the laptop is frequently plugged in. It achieves this by limiting the battery's charge level to around 55-60% of its capacity, rather than charging it to 100%. Let us now if you have any other concern. -Chris_Lenovo

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 battery life review

Key Considerations for Lenovo IdeaPad 3 Battery Life:

  1. Battery Specifications: The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 typically comes with a 45Wh battery, which is standard for mid-range laptops.

  2. Average Battery Life: Users generally report an average battery life of around 6 to 8 hours on a single charge, depending on usage patterns (web browsing, video playback, etc.).

  3. Performance Impact: Battery life can vary significantly based on the configuration (e.g., processor type, RAM, and display resolution). Models with AMD Ryzen processors may offer better efficiency compared to Intel counterparts.

  4. Power Settings: Utilizing power-saving modes and adjusting screen brightness can help extend battery life during use.

  5. Real-World Usage: For everyday tasks like browsing, streaming, and document editing, users often find the battery life sufficient for a full day of light use. However, heavy tasks like gaming or video editing can drain the battery more quickly.

Recommendation: If battery life is a critical factor for you, consider the specific model and configuration of the IdeaPad 3 you are looking at. Additionally, reading user reviews and checking for any updates on battery performance can provide more insights. If you need longer battery life, you might also explore models with larger batteries or consider a laptop designed specifically for extended use.
