TL;DR Yes, there are numerous mods available for Subnautica that can enhance gameplay, improve quality of life, and add new features. Popular mods include EasyCraft, MoreQuickSlots, and various vehicle upgrades.
Quality of Life Mods
Many players recommend mods that improve the game's quality of life without altering its core experience. For example, EasyCraft allows crafting materials to be pulled from nearby containers, making resource management more convenient [2:0]. MoreQuickSlots expands the number of tool slots available, which is particularly useful for managing equipment
[3:6]. Other popular QoL mods include Better Scanner Blips and Docked Vehicle Storage Access, which streamline navigation and inventory management
[2:1].
Gameplay Enhancements
Mods like DeExtinction and Return of the Ancients offer new content and challenges while maintaining the spirit of the original game [1:4]
[1:2]. The Dark Vibrant Shader mod changes the lighting dynamics, requiring a flashlight for nighttime exploration and adding depth to environments like the lava zone
[2:3]. These mods provide fresh experiences for returning players who want to explore Subnautica in new ways.
Multiplayer and Community Mods
Nitrox is a notable mod that enables multiplayer functionality, allowing friends to join in on the adventure. While it has some bugs due to the game's single-player design, many find it enhances the fun factor significantly [4:1]
[4:5]. Additionally, community-driven mods often focus on inclusivity and expanding gameplay options, such as vehicle upgrades and resource highlighting
[5:2]
[5:5].
Modding Platforms and Compatibility
Subnautica mods are primarily hosted on NexusMods, and players typically use the Vortex or BepInEx launchers to manage them [2:0]. It's important to ensure compatibility with the latest game updates, as older mods may not work due to changes in the game's code
[3:2]. Browsing through NexusMods can help identify which mods are currently supported and best fit your gameplay style
[3:6].
Recommendations for Mod Developers
For those interested in developing mods, simple enhancements like resource highlighting or time capsule information could be valuable additions [5:2]
[5:7]. Engaging with communities such as r/subnauticamod can provide feedback and ideas for new projects
[5:1].
Hello, I am a returning player who hasn't gone into subnautica since I beat it on my nintendo switch a few years back. Now that I have a PC, I picked up the game again, and I was wondering if there are any fun mods that still feel within the spirit of the game, but will give me some fresh experiences (so no guns or graphics mods). I know theres the call of the deep mod being developed (which looks incredible) but its still a ways away.
Many thanks!
The Call of the Void (not Deep) shards (being the Hydra and the Silence) are already pretty good. Also the Return of the Ancients Demo was released in December and is already really good. They stick more or less with the feel of the game.
Otherwise as someone else already mentioned, Deextinction. Theres also the Beluga and Odyssey Submarines and Remnants of Life. If you want a challenge while still being more or less in the theme of the game, theres Deathrun Remade. Also keep an eye out for the Prototype Submarine hinted to release this year aswell.
There are also a few great mods that dont quite fit the current theme of the game (The Red Plague for instance) but Id also recommend.
DeExtinction mod is pretty cool
I don't know if they have been able to get that mod to work after the living large update.
The mod has been updated 👍
It’s updated
All these mods are on nexus and use the Vortex launcher.
With putting over 1.3k hours into the game I like to think i have tried almost every mod on Nexus at least once. I really like mods that improve quality of life in the games. And can never really get story mods like The Red Pleage to work. So here is a list of the ones I really like, keep in mind I have a Vector GP76 with a 12th Gen Intel and 32 gb of Ram so idk if all these mods will work with your setup.
I am sorry this list is chaos but I am going through my download mods and that has no rhyme or reason. I would link them, but I am on my phone right now.
Realistic and Challenging recipes by skibditoiletsamp
Alterra Ways by Johnele is amazing it brings in more food, health, and hydration options
Subnautica Auto Save by salpop is VERY handy
Blueprints Improved UI by GreaterDane42 makes looking at the recipes nicer
Alterra Minni Fridge SN by OctolinkG is a cool way to store food
Oxygen Link by 0x4B is handy when your collecting items
All Items 1x1 by MrPurple6411 is nice for collecting metal scrap I use it in tandem with Bag equipment by newman55 (on this one I wish they would redo how the lay out is the largest bag is 6x14 and it doesn't sit right on the pda screen.)
Defabricator (Bepinex) also by MrPurple6411 is also nice when you find a ton of time capsules and get a ton of starter items
Radial Tabs (Bepinex) also by MrPurple6411 is also a MUST have especially if you get a mod that adds crafting recipes
Map also by newman55 is controversial but after putting 1.3k hours into the game I like it.
BulkCraft by KnownIssueJosh is nice when you need to craft a lot of items at once.
MoonpoolVehicleRepair Subnautica by ahk1221 should be in vanilla but that's my opinion.
Blueprint Search Bar by LeeTwentyThree is nice I use it alot with Quick Unpin Recipes (BepinEx) by rrowe404
Time Capsule Scanner (BepinEx) by louskam is fun if you like finding the capsules. You'll get a little notification that a capsule is near. You still have to hunt for it, though.
Night Vision Chip by MrJumpScare is useful
Mark As Read also by KnownIssueJosh is nice if you hate the notifications
AutoSortLockersSN(BepinEx) by M3dicCookie is my life line
True Base Colorizer (Bepinex-Nautilus) by AlHazrad11 makes building Bases a little cooler and adds a beacon way point
And finally Seeds from Harvesting by EldritchCarMaker should also be vanilla in my opinion.
If there are any mods that your interested let me know.
I know this may be obvious or old news for some, but I have noticed that a lot of people don't know you can mod this game.
https://www.nexusmods.com/subnautica
I personally recommend: Maps, MoreQuickSlots, and EasyCraft (it pulls crafting materials from near by containers). You need the Qmod Manager to get them to work.
Another thing a lot of people don't know is Modding your game doesn't disabled achievements, not this game has many unfortunately (missed opportunity).
Anyway I hope this information helped someone. If you already knew this then what's your favorite mod to use? Easycraft is hands down mine, can't imagine playing without it now.
I use the mod that fills the bioreactor with fish from the alien containment. Pretty useful.
Yeah lots of great convenience mods to be had. I have to recommend the Dark Vibrant Shader mod (sorry I can't link it).
That mod makes a flashlight a REQUIREMENT for night time even in the safe shadows. Loved it so much, changed the way this game is played at night time.
And it doesn't just affect night time, it makes plenty of other areas super dark, like the lava zone. Crazy just seeing lava pouring everywhere and nothing else.
My Mod list includes...
[Base Clocks]: Simply adds 2 craftable clocks, digital and analog. Helps me keep track of the day/night cycle while I'm deep.
[Better Scanner Blips]: Puts ranges on your scanner room HUD blips so you can see how far away that stuff is without needing to move a camera out there.
[Docked Vehicle Storage Access]: This mod does a couple things. 1, it adds a new wall locker that will automatically pull everything out of your docked vehicles inventory when you pop into a moonpool or cyclops. 2, it adds a new terminal to the moonpool that's pretty much the same as the one on the cyclops that lets you access the inventory and upgrades of your docked ship.
[PRAWN Suit Light Switch]: Lets you turn the PRAWN headlights on and off with "Q".
[PRAWN Upgrade Access]: Lets you access the PRAWN upgrades without having to get out of the ship. AKA you can change arms "on the fly". Also lets you access the storage compartment from inside.
[Seamoth Storage Access]: Allows you to access the seamoth storage compartments from inside.
[Seaglide Map Controls]: NO MORE RIGHT CLICK SPAMMING! With this mod right click = light on/off, and "F" toggles the map. This is one of my favorite mods as it's a huge quality of life increase.
[Vehicle Upgrades in Cyclops]: This makes it so the cyclops upgrade fabricator also makes the seamoth, PRAWN, and neutral(?) upgrades. I love using my cyclops as my only base, so this one allows me to never need to craft a moonpool.
[Refillable Oxygen Tanks]: It slightly increases the difficulty of the game through a change to the oxygen tank system. The tanks will not automatically refill when you move into an area with oxygen/the surface. You have to go to any fabricator, unequip the tank, and click a refill option to bring your tanks back to full. This one is absolutely my favorite mod. It's changed the way I play the game just enough that it's interesting all over again.
I use a couple of those myself, the scanner blips and prawn access, though I can't figure out how that last one works. what do you like the refillable air tank? I looked at it once but the idea of needing to run to a fabricator every 4 minutes seemed more trouble than fun.
> what do you like the refillable air tank?
Why do I like it?
Because it adds another problem for me to work around and solve. That's basically all you ever do in survival games. Find problems and ways to overcome them. Having the oxygen tanks refill nearly instantly when you pop your head above water seemed a bit silly and easy to me.
>I looked at it once but the idea of needing to run to a fabricator every 4 minutes seemed more trouble than fun.
It does compensate for this a bit by increasing the amount of time each tank gives you. The Ultra High Capacity Tank holds 800 seconds, ~13 minutes, worth of air. Although before I got to the Ultra high Cap tanks, I was holding a spare tank in my inventory while exploring wrecks or the Aurora itself.
Plus while scooting around in the Seamoth or PRAWN, at times it's better to take your tank off and simply use the 45 second breath hold to pop out of the cockpit and grab a few items.
Basically it makes oxygen a more valuable resource and forces you to think more about when and how you use it.
Thank you a lot. I'm saving this comment for later.
I almost never install modes in a game but the building part of the game is a bit lacking.
I am trying really hard not to spoil my self since I still have not finished the game. I am taking it very slowly and relaxing.
I guess my question would be do mods transform this game or is it more or less the same experience ?
Don't you miss a lot of the recent bugfixes and added content from BZ? Thought you had to get on a super old version of subnautica for mods to work
No, mods work on the latest version of Subnautica. The main thing is that a lot of old mods are no longer useable because they were on a legacy version and the game updated, breaking them all, however most of the mods now have a version that works, so you get mods on the newest version.
I've never played with mods and I absolutely love this game. Maybe because I'm on console but this game is still amazing with no mods
Yeah I dunno why but I almost never instal mods. I really hope Subnautica 3 has more building options though
I think if they make a sequel it will be named Subnautica 2, because technically below zero is kind of a spin off game, or is akin to a separately sold major dlc, kind of like phantom liberty is to Cyberpunk 2077. Who knows though 🤔 Devs do all sorts of weird shit 🤷
There are some cool QoL base building mods. Being able to auto-pull materials for crafting from nearby containers is really nice. Think there’s also a locker that will auto-transfer vehicle storage to it that you can place in the moonpool. Little stuff like that. There’s also a few decor mods. Other than that, not much is needed IMO.
I don’t have any favourites in particular but some of the best ones are:
BaseKits More Quick Slots Seamoth Sprint Seaglide Upgrades EasyCraft (I think that’s what it’s called)
It’s best to just browse nexus and see which mods you like
This is entirely a valid option, but on nexusmods there is a tag of 'fair and balanced' that is basically QoL improvements, some of those may actually make your play through more enjoyable if they correct things bugging you
He mentions that, yea.
then he ended with a more generic question of how mods affect the game as a whole, not just related to building.
Go worry about bigger issues my guy. The question was answered just fine.
bruh what's your modlist? what version are you playing? I REALLY want to play this game again but all of the great mods seem to be incompatible, like more upgrades for seamoth/cyclops, more upgrade slots for the vehicles, things like that. Vortex seems to be full of outdated mods.
Use NexusMods directly instead of vortex, the newer mods are for Living Large. Make sure you're using bepinex. I'm using Living Large, and my modlist is:
(these are directly the file names for the most part btw)
BaseKits
Better Scanner Room Upgrades
EasyCraft
FabricatorNoAutoClose
FasterScanning
ImprovedCragfield
ImprovedPowerNetwork
JackLog-Sunbeam-Timer
MegaO2Tank
Modding Helper
MoreQuickSlotsBepInEx
MoreResourcesDiscovery
Nautilus
Night Vision Update
PrawnSuitLightSwitch
SeaglideUpgrades
SeamothSpeedUpgrades
SeamothSprint
SleekBases_Subnautica
SolarPanelPlugin
SolidTerrain
SubnauticaMap
SubnauticaModMapanger
SwinChargeInventory
TableCoralMultiplier
TrackEverything
There’s a crafting mod that allows you to use items in your nearby chests for crafting
Let's just say mods are hardly ever even mentioned here, but how many people are using them overall?
I only use one mod- nitrox, so that when paired with hamachi my brother and friends can play along with me. It has some item bugs because the game was designed for single player only, but it’s still worth it because it makes the game a LOT more fun. Edit: I’m not even sure it’s necessarily a mod, it seems more like a client.
It's a mod imho since it modifies the game experience as it was designed by the studio.
Aside from that: would you recommend it? Because I looked like 2? Years ago and the consensus was mostly like it's not ready, but I love the idea
It’s still extremely buggy and the mod is still in alpha but I would have to say despite the bugs it’s extremely worth it. Most of the bugs are related to base building where someone will build something that’s not there for you but it doesn’t happen all the time. It depends also who you’re playing with but yes I recommend it.
Been playing it with some mates the past couple weeks, the only bug I have run into is the life pods of the survivor's will sometimes not appear after getting to the location. In which case you can quickly restart and I find that it comes back. Great experience alone, fun experience with friends.
After completing both games without mods at least once, yeah I’m gonna use mods. Taking a break for the moment then gonna start throwing some mods in and seeing what kind of trouble I can make. And to add a map to the PDA. And more hotbar.
So basically QoL stuff to make life slightly less annoying I suppose.
That's my goal as well, in BZ more toolbar slots and less foggy water in some biomes
I plan to do exactly this once I get to BZ. A map is the main thing I would have liked in the original.
No but should be getting pc soon i may check out what they have
My list is mostly quality of life, quicker prawn drilling, more tool quick slots, crafting from lockers in the current base etc.
And less muddy water for below zero for me
Had it for free on Game Pass, played it, fell in love, wanted mods, no mods on gamepass, bought it on Steam
I tried to but I’m stupid and can’t get it to work.
Extra hotbar slots I’m coming for you
Yeah, that was like my main motivation to seriously consider it again in below zero because 5 slots just doesn't work
I am learning coding and have found that modding subnautica is a great way to keep me interested. I have made 3 successful mods so far on Nexus mods. They are under my name, I don’t think posting links is allowed on this subreddit, but I assume you can find them if you are interested.
I am curious to see if anyone has requests for mods? Ideally they would be on the simple side as I am quite new to programming.
Also, could you make a mod that highlights resources like in bz? In subnautica bz there was an option to highlight resources and I would love to have that in subnautica one as im basically blind lol
That might be doable. I was messing around with lighting yesterday and found out that the plants in the lost river each have a light source. Might be able to copy and edit that to outcrops.
For the first one, there is already a mod for that it seems. Scannable Time Capsules (Bepinex) by MrPurple6411
For the second, What do you mean?
When you find a time capsule it would be cool to know the year it was created. I can only imagine my kid finding a time capsule older than he is, that would be insane. This information is publicly available because when you search for a TC in the official site the creation date is in there. It is just not shown in the game.
I've been looking for somebody to do a mod like this
a mod that adds inclusive, fun and useful upgrades for every vehicle and one of those would be an upgrade for the seamoth and cyclops that releases a mini drill ship and it goes up to 250 meters away from you and mines nearby ores and has 6 storage space, after its full it comes back to you're cyclops/seamoth and puts in in the storage. the seamoth can only go to level 2 while the cyclops can go up to 4 and get a signal upgrade that allows the drones to go farther away from the cyclops to find ores if you're interested i can tell you more of the upgrades if any of you are interested i can tell you a few more of them. and i can give better details on the upgrade levels
Add something more than quartz and heat under the sea islands, like sea2c
Hey! Try here too r/subnauticamod
I was wondering how you can install mods on the pc version of the game since I want more base parts and vehicles to ram into reapers. Can anyone explain how to do so?
nexusmods.com/Subnautica
If you can’t figure it out then join the Subnautica modding discord server
Find the mod you want on the Subnautica nexus, then follow the instructions. You’ll need to start with the Qmods modloader, as that’s the base for everything. There’s not many mods that add the things you want, so you might be disappointed.
Thank you, and thats okay
I am writing this because I recently posted this here and a handful of people were asking about mods and how to install them. If you've completed the game already once (or thrice) they can still make the game quite a bit more enjoyable for another playthrough and if you're on your first game, they can greatly enhance Subnautica and make it an even better game!
First I'll tell you how to install them, then I'll tell you about some of my favourites and what they do exactly.

Right, in order to use mods in Subnautica you will need to install QMods first. Simply open the .exe, type in the directory of your Subnautica folder (Mine is "C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Subnautica" but yours may differ) and follow the instructions the installer gives you. QMods will then create a folder inside your Subnautica folder called "QMods". It might need a restart of subnautica to actually create the folder. And then you're done with the hard part.
To install mods, download them from www.nexusmods.com/subnautica and place their mod folder into the QMods folder. A properly installed mod folder looks like this. Be careful, some mods put their mod folder into a folder called QMods in their .zip. Make sure that you place the mod folder into your QMods directory, and not the QMods folder containing the mod folder. Did that make any sense? Just try to make it look like the screenshot above.
Some mods also require you to install SMLHelper. You can install this like any other mod. (Take the mod folder out of the .zip and place it inside your QMods folder.)
Now that wasn't hard, was it? It's also firmly explained on the download page of Qmods.

On to Part 2. I'll now tell you about some of my favourite mods and a quick summary of what they do. But if you want to check them out yourself, feel free to hop over to https://www.nexusmods.com/subnautica/ and try them all. There are only like 80 so it shouldn't take long. These are just some of my personal favourites, if you have some more you like, feel free to throw them into the replies.

InternetsLIVE H2.0 Vibrant Shader DX11 by InternetsLuitjens
This shader makes the game a lot more vibrant and beautiful. I've been using this for a week now and turning it off makes the vanilla game look kinda dull now. It has a separate installer and you don't need to do anything in the QMods folder.

Map by Newman55
Adds a map to the signal blip section of your PDA, you can either set it to reveal itself only when you have been at that location already, or you can unlock it all instantly. Has some nice settings to configure in the game options. New Biome Map is an add-on to this mod. It adds a biome map with marked distances, radiation zones and cave entrances. Use at your own risk, might contain minor exploration spoilers.

MoreQuickSlots by Randy Knapp
Allows a total of 12 quickslots, very useful and simple.

SlotExtender by Senna7608
This one is criminally underrated, it adds 4 additional upgrade slots to your seamoth, allowing for some really neat things. (Like 4 Speed boost modules as you could see in my previous post)

Upgraded Vehicles by PrimeSonic
Adds new upgrade modules. Speed boost modules will increase your speed in any vehicle by +35%. The Hull upgrade module was modified to actually protect against all damage sources and it's actually useful now. And you can build a Seamoth / PRAWN Mk II now, wich has 2 speed boost, 2 hull strengthen and 2 power efficiency modules pre-installed so they don't take up space in the upgrade slots.

SeaglideMapControls by Randy Knapp
Sets F to toggle map of the seaglide and Right-Click to only toggle the lights. No more hours of clicking to turn of the damn terrain map!

MoreSeamothUpgrades by ahk1221
Adds a depth module mk. IV and V for the seamoth as well as a drill arm module and a thermal reactor. Basically allows you to use the Seamoth in the deep biomes where normally only a PRAWN would survive.

Habitat Control Panel by Randy Knapp
Adds a control panel with build in beacon to your habitat construction tool. Allows to change the color of internal and external walls and adds a slot for a power cell in case you need some emergency power for your base.

CustomBeacons by Randy Knapp
Set any Beacon Blip to more colors and more awesome icons.

AutoSortLockers by Randy Knapp
Adds custom Lockers that automatically sort items when put them into the AutoSorter. Set your own criterias for specific lockers and change their color and stuff. Very nice for people that would like to know where their goddamn copper that they definitely remember having is.

Decorations Mod by OSubMarin
Adds a bunch (Actually more like a metric fuckton) of awesome decorations and new plants for your nice little sea base.

White Lights by Randy Knapp
Allows you to customize the color of vehicle lights. Just change some values inside the config.txt.

ExteriorPlantPots by ahk1221
Adds the 3 standard plant pots, except those ones can be placed outside and filled with water plants.

Vehicle Module Fabricator by PrimeSonic
Adds a fabricator that can fabricate all vehicle upgrades. No more running to your moonpool again. Also compatible with other mods that add their own upgrades.

Custom Load Screen by Kylinator25
Allows you to use your own image file for the load screen.

Base Light Switch by ahk1221
Adds a light switch to your base that will turn off the internal lights. Neat, but not that useful.

Thanks for this. Any modders out there able to add a glass dome for MPRs??
I did all of this, but for some reason, there is no mod section in settings, one time it worked, but stopped working after i quit and rejoined
Do we make a mod? Or we just mod the game? (Pls upvote or........ i will [bad word] you)
This is the post I've been waiting for!! Thanks!!
this is a great guide for new subnautica modders qmods has a new page
https://www.nexusmods.com/subnautica/mods/201
just in case anyone needs it
Damn there are so many cool mods! This may make me start a new game :)
want some help to install?
Is it simple to install just a expanded hot bad mod? Are there references online to help?
By do you have so many tabs open? lol
Who doesn't have over 500 tabs open? You can't just fav everything you'll have to watch or read soon!
I wouldn’t know lol, I only really use my laptop for drawing
Have you all found any good mods. I’m thinking of going in for my 4th play through and thought I might want to shake it up a bit.
If you use a lot of beacons I recommend CustomBeacons , adds more colors and icons so it's easier to keep track of them.
Autosort locker + Resource Monitor is yum. I have the autosorter and monitor in my base, with all the storage lockers off in a side room, never to have to be touched except to add more. Mid-game Batteries have become a favorite of mine.
After my second play through I started adding mods but by far the most useful is EasyCraft. It makes it so that if the material is in a nearby locker, you don't need to have it in your inventory to build. It means I can park my Cyclops near my new base location and then just start building without going in and out to get a piece of copper.
The second I added because I like to keep it organized is AutosortLockers. You can create an autosort locker and then dump random material into it and it will get placed in a locker with the correct filter. It has broad filters and specific, meaning I can have a locker specifically for gold and silver, or one for all metals. You can also color code the lockers.
Here are some others but those are my favorite.
Get Qmods first.
Install the helper libraries, then these mods should work just fine.
edit: adding links
I love that map, makes the game so much nicer to play
so I'm looking for mods for subnautica like: vanilla expanded or composite buildables, any suggestions?
Came looking for mods for a new gameplay.
What mods would you want : New vechicles new fishes ? Maybe even new story line like red plague or something idk
I guess a few mods that could add some twists to new play through. The things u mentioned would fit just right. A couple new vehicles, extra tools, different fauna, additions to the story/quests. Quality of life features. Maybe even something graphical?
How easy is it to mod it? I'm used to mod Stardew Valley and Skyrim. Are some mods buggy or gamecrashing?
Thx in advance!!
Maybe add the sub mod that adds the mesmer-like sub i don't remember what it's called though
for some reason I can't find it on nexus but it was here
Good idea anybody now what is the name of it
It was bloosom
Blossom hypno submarine
Return of the ancients is really cool.
The hydra feels great if you want a seatruck done well.
The red plague is a nice horror mod that will modify the game a bunch.
maybe hydra but I'm rather looking for mods to diversify the normal gameplay and not red plague or return of the ancients but I'll play them someday
Is it a sun panel but with either texture?
If you want this sun panel its one of things in Vanilla expanded
Are there mods for subnautica
Key Considerations for Subnautica Mods:
Modding Community: Subnautica has a vibrant modding community, with many players creating and sharing mods to enhance gameplay. Websites like Nexus Mods and the Subnautica Modding Discord are great places to find mods.
Types of Mods:
Compatibility: Always check if the mod is compatible with your version of Subnautica. Some mods may not work with the latest updates or may require specific game versions.
Installation Process: Most mods require a mod loader, such as QModManager, to install. Follow the mod's instructions carefully for proper installation.
Backup Your Game: Before installing mods, back up your save files to avoid potential issues or corruption.
Recommendation: If you're new to modding, start with popular mods like "Subnautica Modding Toolkit" for easier installation and management, or "Better Inventory" for improved inventory organization. These mods can significantly enhance your gameplay experience without drastically altering the game.
