TL;DR Yes, there are mods available for Subnautica Below Zero. They can be found on platforms like NexusMods and Discord communities dedicated to Subnautica modding.
Availability of Mods
Subnautica Below Zero has a variety of mods available despite not having official mod support. The game is moddable due to its engine and the developers not actively preventing modding [1:1]. There are currently about 60 mods available for Below Zero on NexusMods
[5:1]. These mods range from gameplay enhancements to aesthetic changes, providing players with numerous options to customize their experience.
Popular Mods and Modding Communities
Some popular mods include BetterACU
, which enhances the functionality of the Alien Containment Unit [5:2]. Additionally, there are active modding communities such as the Subnautica mod Discord where users discuss mods and share information
[2:1]. These communities are valuable resources for finding new mods and getting support for mod installation and troubleshooting.
Mod Compatibility and Limitations
While Subnautica and Below Zero share many assets and use the same engine, they are technically separate games, which affects mod compatibility [4:1]
[4:3]. This separation means that mods created for one game may not work for the other without specific adaptation. The developers have expressed a desire to keep certain features unique to each game, limiting backporting of content from Below Zero to the original Subnautica
[2:4].
Multiplayer Mods
There is interest in multiplayer mods for Below Zero, similar to those available for Subnautica [3:1]. The Nitrox mod is known for enabling multiplayer in Subnautica, though its compatibility with Below Zero requires further exploration and adaptation by modders.
Creating New Mods
For those interested in creating new mods, the community encourages creativity and innovation. Although some mods may no longer be maintained, new ones continue to emerge thanks to dedicated modders [5:3]. If you have programming skills or are willing to learn, contributing to the modding scene can be rewarding and beneficial for the gaming community.
Theres already mods for it i think
Nice. Where can i find them,on nexus maybe?
I think so yeah
Are there mods for it? Yes: Subnautica Below Zero mods
"Mod support" is a different animal. The game is moddable due to the engine used and UWE not actively preventing it, but that is not 'support'. That said, UWE is exploring officially supporting mods, working directly with mod authors to make the game more easily moddable, etc., but nothing has directly come of it yet.
Does anyone know if there’s a mod that lets you build Below Zero stuff in Subnautica? I wanted to add things from Marguerit’s base to my own, like the bathroom, fridge, etc.
The devs have explicitly said they don't want people to backport stuff from BZ, so no unfortunately.
That's annoyingly restrictive. Why can't modders just do what they wanna do?
Probably because if everything from below zero was modded into the original game, less people would want to buy BZ, because all the unique features and content wouldn't be unique anymore (not to mention available for free at that point).
That's odd, since they chose to add a bunch of stuff from BZ into S1. Like the huge living compartment, the improved air bladder, etc.
So they themselves saw the value in bringing some of the BZ upgrades back to S1.
Yes, they saw the value of adding some of it and They brought back what they wanted and what they thought would add to sn1 without taking away too many new features from bz. Below zero needs some unique features, can't all be modded or added back to the og game otherwise bz loses some of its appeal.
Please, could someone elaborate on that? People mention this a lot, but there is no source, or further explanation about what's the motive behind this or if unknown world takes measures against that.
There's a Subnautica mod Discord where it's mentioned frequently. They might be able to get you better information.
Ohh okay didn’t know that. Thanks!
Well that's stupid.
sorry if its already been asked is there a multiplayer mod for below zero??
There definitely is, but I don’t remember what it’s called and where to get it.
aw dam
I’ve looked it up and I think i found it
https://nitrox.rux.gg/wiki/article/installing-nitrox-mod-subnautica
We all want it
i guess so :D
Ark Survival Evolved has expansions, and its mods work with all expansions, why are below zero and subnautica mods incompatible? below zero is an expansion of subnautica shouldn't they be compatible between the two?
Below Zero isn't an expansion, it's a renovation. Imagine you blew up your living room, installed a bedroom, game room, and smaller living room, and then wonder why your couch doesn't fit after expanding your house.
because they rewrote the game for BZ
In Ark it's just different maps of the same game, not a completely different game.
Because those are 2 separate games? Just because they're similar in terms of gameplay and the fact they're set in the same universe doesn't mean that they're the same game.
BZ isn't an expansion. It's, by technical standards, a different game. It's easier to create mods for a base game that has expansions.
Subnautica is not a base game in this case.
The code seems to be significantly different enough that you can't make a Subnautica mod and have it be compatible with BZ.
I found an interesting mod that would make the bioreactor much more better to use and more friendly. The creator simply don't work on it anymore and so it stays in subnautica, but an Below zero version would make it so awesome.
Can someone create such mod for below zero?
The mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/subnautica/mods/38?tab=description
You have found the Nexus SN area, there is also an BZ area. Not sure why its not reported but ´BetterACU´ can behave exactly like ´Fish Overflow Distributor´ . Fully configurable. Snippet from the description:
"Alien Containment Unit is configurable to allow between 10(default) up to 100 space inside.
Large Room Alien Containment Unit is configurable to allow between 20(default) up to 200 space inside.
After the ACU reaches full capacity it will begin to put newly bred fish into bioreactors that are attached to the base.
If after all Bioreactors are full then it will begin to release non hostile bred fish into the ocean to re-populate the area around your base. (Configurable!)"
Quite a few very nice QOL mods have been ported. In total about 60 mods exist for BZ at the moment.
Yeah I saw the bz area and didn't find something similar to this mod and it just read it to fast and didn't spotted it.
So many thanks to you that you said that it works like I need it :D And thanks that you took the time to spot it!
BTW I play already with over 10 of them :p
Yw. Enjoy the mod(s).
Rip! BetterACU is no longer a thing.
Who would make mods for the game in Early Access and under heavy remaid?
Great people like newman55 on NexusMods who occasionally updates his amazing fog-of-exploration map mod, for people like me who have been playing this game for MONTHS AND MONTHS!
And, all the great current and past mantainers of QMods https://www.nexusmods.com/subnauticabelowzero/mods/1
It's a wonderful use of programming talent, and gaming love. Lots of people playing right now, man. And, modders gonna mod.
Also, I don't know if you've ever written a Mod, but there is little difference between maintaining a mod for this game right now, and for instance, for Elder Scrolls Online during some of their most tumultuous update periods. I have updated my ESO mods three times in the last few days. I dropped my own speedo mod when it got significantly outdated or broken three times in a row, one fall.
I mean there exist already some mods
Multiple mod creators in fact. In total about 60 mods exist for BZ at the moment.
Heya! I just bought the game from steam.
I wanted to see if I could add some QOL mods, mostly the snap building mod.
I manually installed Qmods, which worked, but as soon as I started adding other mods they failed to load.
Does anyone know if there's some workarounds to make mods work on the current build? If not, can I install previous versions of the game?
Thank you!
In the infinite wisdom of the devs the previous versions are not on steam. Since this was the first update in a long time after the games final update all the devs who worked on those mods are probably on different projects by now.
Don't expect your mods to get updated and if they do you better thank the author. Only work around that I can think of is "find" a copy of BZ from before the update and mod that.
Such a shame! I always have a deep respect for people who create mods for free. From what little I've gathered, it seems like Subnautica (and BZ) mod communities have had quite some setbacks.
Maybe one day I'll find a way to play an older version, but with this knowledge I think I'm going to go for a vanilla run instead. Thank you for answer!
Let's just say mods are hardly ever even mentioned here, but how many people are using them overall?
After completing both games without mods at least once, yeah I’m gonna use mods. Taking a break for the moment then gonna start throwing some mods in and seeing what kind of trouble I can make. And to add a map to the PDA. And more hotbar.
So basically QoL stuff to make life slightly less annoying I suppose.
That's my goal as well, in BZ more toolbar slots and less foggy water in some biomes
I plan to do exactly this once I get to BZ. A map is the main thing I would have liked in the original.
No but should be getting pc soon i may check out what they have
My list is mostly quality of life, quicker prawn drilling, more tool quick slots, crafting from lockers in the current base etc.
And less muddy water for below zero for me
I only use one mod- nitrox, so that when paired with hamachi my brother and friends can play along with me. It has some item bugs because the game was designed for single player only, but it’s still worth it because it makes the game a LOT more fun. Edit: I’m not even sure it’s necessarily a mod, it seems more like a client.
It's a mod imho since it modifies the game experience as it was designed by the studio.
Aside from that: would you recommend it? Because I looked like 2? Years ago and the consensus was mostly like it's not ready, but I love the idea
It’s still extremely buggy and the mod is still in alpha but I would have to say despite the bugs it’s extremely worth it. Most of the bugs are related to base building where someone will build something that’s not there for you but it doesn’t happen all the time. It depends also who you’re playing with but yes I recommend it.
Been playing it with some mates the past couple weeks, the only bug I have run into is the life pods of the survivor's will sometimes not appear after getting to the location. In which case you can quickly restart and I find that it comes back. Great experience alone, fun experience with friends.
I tried to but I’m stupid and can’t get it to work.
Extra hotbar slots I’m coming for you
Yeah, that was like my main motivation to seriously consider it again in below zero because 5 slots just doesn't work
Had it for free on Game Pass, played it, fell in love, wanted mods, no mods on gamepass, bought it on Steam
Hello, I am a returning player who hasn't gone into subnautica since I beat it on my nintendo switch a few years back. Now that I have a PC, I picked up the game again, and I was wondering if there are any fun mods that still feel within the spirit of the game, but will give me some fresh experiences (so no guns or graphics mods). I know theres the call of the deep mod being developed (which looks incredible) but its still a ways away.
Many thanks!
The Call of the Void (not Deep) shards (being the Hydra and the Silence) are already pretty good. Also the Return of the Ancients Demo was released in December and is already really good. They stick more or less with the feel of the game.
Otherwise as someone else already mentioned, Deextinction. Theres also the Beluga and Odyssey Submarines and Remnants of Life. If you want a challenge while still being more or less in the theme of the game, theres Deathrun Remade. Also keep an eye out for the Prototype Submarine hinted to release this year aswell.
There are also a few great mods that dont quite fit the current theme of the game (The Red Plague for instance) but Id also recommend.
DeExtinction mod is pretty cool
I don't know if they have been able to get that mod to work after the living large update.
The mod has been updated 👍
It’s updated
All these mods are on nexus and use the Vortex launcher.
With putting over 1.3k hours into the game I like to think i have tried almost every mod on Nexus at least once. I really like mods that improve quality of life in the games. And can never really get story mods like The Red Pleage to work. So here is a list of the ones I really like, keep in mind I have a Vector GP76 with a 12th Gen Intel and 32 gb of Ram so idk if all these mods will work with your setup.
I am sorry this list is chaos but I am going through my download mods and that has no rhyme or reason. I would link them, but I am on my phone right now.
Realistic and Challenging recipes by skibditoiletsamp
Alterra Ways by Johnele is amazing it brings in more food, health, and hydration options
Subnautica Auto Save by salpop is VERY handy
Blueprints Improved UI by GreaterDane42 makes looking at the recipes nicer
Alterra Minni Fridge SN by OctolinkG is a cool way to store food
Oxygen Link by 0x4B is handy when your collecting items
All Items 1x1 by MrPurple6411 is nice for collecting metal scrap I use it in tandem with Bag equipment by newman55 (on this one I wish they would redo how the lay out is the largest bag is 6x14 and it doesn't sit right on the pda screen.)
Defabricator (Bepinex) also by MrPurple6411 is also nice when you find a ton of time capsules and get a ton of starter items
Radial Tabs (Bepinex) also by MrPurple6411 is also a MUST have especially if you get a mod that adds crafting recipes
Map also by newman55 is controversial but after putting 1.3k hours into the game I like it.
BulkCraft by KnownIssueJosh is nice when you need to craft a lot of items at once.
MoonpoolVehicleRepair Subnautica by ahk1221 should be in vanilla but that's my opinion.
Blueprint Search Bar by LeeTwentyThree is nice I use it alot with Quick Unpin Recipes (BepinEx) by rrowe404
Time Capsule Scanner (BepinEx) by louskam is fun if you like finding the capsules. You'll get a little notification that a capsule is near. You still have to hunt for it, though.
Night Vision Chip by MrJumpScare is useful
Mark As Read also by KnownIssueJosh is nice if you hate the notifications
AutoSortLockersSN(BepinEx) by M3dicCookie is my life line
True Base Colorizer (Bepinex-Nautilus) by AlHazrad11 makes building Bases a little cooler and adds a beacon way point
And finally Seeds from Harvesting by EldritchCarMaker should also be vanilla in my opinion.
If there are any mods that your interested let me know.
As someone else has said, porting things from BZ to Subnautica directly isn't allowed.
Not sure about furniture. But there is a Deconstructor locker which is the same as the Recyclething from BZ.
The DEVs have previously asked the modding community to not bring things from BZ into the original, and last I saw the modders were respecting that request.
then is there a mod with good ish furniture
There are lots of mods with different furniture, check out nexusmods and find what you like.
Why TF would they care? Is it just so people buy BZ?
They likely have plans for a major Subnautica update to modernize - either that or they just dont want their IP/assets being used.
I get following their request, but what was their reasoning? Did they provide any?
Not that I know of. I found out about it when I asked about getting the split multipurpose room in SN.
It sounds like they plan on backporting those features if I had to take a guess. Or at least are open enough to the notion to take preparative steps for it
Been thinking of getting back into Subnautica. What are some good mods for the two games?
I know I want Return of the Ancients for the first game.
Just realized that RotA is still in development. Darn, was really looking forward to all of that content.
There are mods that don't effect the difficulty but are good quality of life: Cyclops docking mod Snap to grid builder Custom craft pulls material from nearby lockers when using fabricator instead of needing them in your inventory
Makes the game easier but I enjoy: More mod slots for vehicles Arms for Seamoth Ability to scan/repair inside Seamoth/prawn Bioreactor/nuke for Cyclops
Mods that make the game harder: I think it's part of custom craft, but requires you to 3x as many wrecks for blueprints and requires more materials for fabricator recipes. This really slows down the early part of the game. Persistent Reapers adds reapers randomly and gives them the taste for humans TheDepths shader removes most ambient light and reduces light output, turning it into a horror game where you can barely navigate at night
Arms for sea moth?! Omg I’m getting that one
https://www.nexusmods.com/subnautica/mods/365
With the scanner tool and storage access you can play a game with basically never having to leave the Seamoth in water.
One mod you want to look out for call of the void. It just started be made but look up Aci on YouTube to see what it's about and if it'll be your cup of tea
First run: no mods.
After that for SN I run: Storage space, Seamoth depth, Seamoth prawn arms.
This lets me do a "single dive" run (where, once I enter the >! Lost River !<, I'm not allowed to come back out until finished) without using the Cyclops, which I hate. This doesn't make it easy (other than not needing the Cyclops), but mostly just makes it less annoying... and more challenging later on.
I don't play BZ much, so... no idea about mods.
For Subnautica, a regular play through without any mods is best for a first play through, after that, some of my favorite mods are the Snapgrid ones, auto save, a mod to fix items falling through the floor, infinite prawn suit jump, and bed teleport. These stuff just make the game more fun to me :)
I remember the Realistic Crafting mod was good, but it needed tweaking when I played it a few years ago. Maybe if they made power cells more reasonable it could have become ideal.
