TL;DR To install mods for Subnautica, use mod frameworks like BepInEx or QModManager. Download mods from NexusMods and follow the installation instructions provided on each mod's page.
Choosing a Mod Framework
Subnautica mods are typically installed using frameworks that manage how the mods interact with the game. Historically, QModManager was the primary framework used [1:1]. However, due to updates in the game's core components, many modders have transitioned to using BepInEx and Nautilus
[2:1]. When selecting mods, ensure they are compatible with the framework you choose—either "for BepInEx" / "for Nautilus" or "for QMods" / "SMLHelper."
Manual Installation Process
While Vortex can be used for automatic installation, manual installation is often recommended for stability [1:1]. The process involves downloading the desired mod files from NexusMods, extracting them, and placing them into the appropriate directory created by your chosen mod framework (e.g., QMod directory for QModManager)
[1:1].
Finding Mods
NexusMods is the primary source for Subnautica mods [3:2]
[5:2]. Most mods come with detailed installation instructions on their description pages
[1:2]
[5:1]. Popular mods can be browsed directly on NexusMods, allowing users to select based on features or compatibility
[2:1].
Troubleshooting and Community Support
If you encounter issues during installation, such as mods not appearing in-game settings [4:2], joining community platforms like the Subnautica modding Discord server can provide additional support and troubleshooting advice
[5:3]. Engaging with the community can also help discover new mods or get recommendations for quality-of-life improvements
[3:1].
By following these steps and utilizing community resources, you can effectively enhance your Subnautica experience with mods tailored to your interests.
Kind of stupid how there isn't a steam workshop for this game...how on earth do I install mods?
Most of the mods on nexus have instructions on their description page.
I just went to the nexus site and hit the button to install vortex, then i carefully follow the instructions on each mod’s page.
Vortex isn't the best installer and can cause you problems in some cases, so it's best/safest to do it manually and it's dead easy.
You'll want to install QModManager first, it'll make a QMod directory in your Subnautica folder and that's where you'll put the mods. If you're on the Epic version, you'll have to give it the proper location of your Epic Games/Subnautica folder.
Find the mods you want to install and look at the prerequisites on the Description page and make sure you install those mods.
To install them, download the file, open it up, and drag/drop the named addon folder into the QMods folder. Sometimes you'll see QMods directory in the downloaded file b/c the author packed it badly, just open that up to find the named mod directory and drag that to your QMods directory.
Some mods have configuration options in the files, so check the mod description to see if there's anything you have to edit first.
ty!
Hi!
I have completed the whole game several times and now I was searching ways to install mods, the gargantuan one being prioritary cause I don't want to replay the base game again. If you could help me or pass me a good, trustworthy tutorial I would be very grateful.
TIA!
Install BepInEx. Install Nautilus. Both of these are "frameworks", mods will load on top of them.
Then look through the popular mods and figure out what you'd like. Whichever mods you pick, they must say "for BepInEx" / "for Nautilus" and NOT for QMods or SMLHelper. This is because the current patch of the game changed some core components that forced everyone to switch from QMods and SMLHelper to the BepInEx architecture for mods.
Mods that I like are:
Map.
EasyCraft.
More Quickslots.
Moonpool vehicle repair.
Sleek Bases which fixes mis-matched colors between the various base modules.
Improved Blueprints UI - smaller icons in the PDA.
Again, search for "bepinex" versions of the mods you like.
Are there any that add any new buildings or vehicles? (Wishful thinking I know...)
Sure, yeah, just scroll through.
I am searching for workshop to install mods but i cant find it on steam. How do you people get mods for subnautica? What are the best mods? I am looking for QOL mods.
I am writing this because I recently posted this here and a handful of people were asking about mods and how to install them. If you've completed the game already once (or thrice) they can still make the game quite a bit more enjoyable for another playthrough and if you're on your first game, they can greatly enhance Subnautica and make it an even better game!
First I'll tell you how to install them, then I'll tell you about some of my favourites and what they do exactly.

Right, in order to use mods in Subnautica you will need to install QMods first. Simply open the .exe, type in the directory of your Subnautica folder (Mine is "C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Subnautica" but yours may differ) and follow the instructions the installer gives you. QMods will then create a folder inside your Subnautica folder called "QMods". It might need a restart of subnautica to actually create the folder. And then you're done with the hard part.
To install mods, download them from www.nexusmods.com/subnautica and place their mod folder into the QMods folder. A properly installed mod folder looks like this. Be careful, some mods put their mod folder into a folder called QMods in their .zip. Make sure that you place the mod folder into your QMods directory, and not the QMods folder containing the mod folder. Did that make any sense? Just try to make it look like the screenshot above.
Some mods also require you to install SMLHelper. You can install this like any other mod. (Take the mod folder out of the .zip and place it inside your QMods folder.)
Now that wasn't hard, was it? It's also firmly explained on the download page of Qmods.

On to Part 2. I'll now tell you about some of my favourite mods and a quick summary of what they do. But if you want to check them out yourself, feel free to hop over to https://www.nexusmods.com/subnautica/ and try them all. There are only like 80 so it shouldn't take long. These are just some of my personal favourites, if you have some more you like, feel free to throw them into the replies.

InternetsLIVE H2.0 Vibrant Shader DX11 by InternetsLuitjens
This shader makes the game a lot more vibrant and beautiful. I've been using this for a week now and turning it off makes the vanilla game look kinda dull now. It has a separate installer and you don't need to do anything in the QMods folder.

Map by Newman55
Adds a map to the signal blip section of your PDA, you can either set it to reveal itself only when you have been at that location already, or you can unlock it all instantly. Has some nice settings to configure in the game options. New Biome Map is an add-on to this mod. It adds a biome map with marked distances, radiation zones and cave entrances. Use at your own risk, might contain minor exploration spoilers.

MoreQuickSlots by Randy Knapp
Allows a total of 12 quickslots, very useful and simple.

SlotExtender by Senna7608
This one is criminally underrated, it adds 4 additional upgrade slots to your seamoth, allowing for some really neat things. (Like 4 Speed boost modules as you could see in my previous post)

Upgraded Vehicles by PrimeSonic
Adds new upgrade modules. Speed boost modules will increase your speed in any vehicle by +35%. The Hull upgrade module was modified to actually protect against all damage sources and it's actually useful now. And you can build a Seamoth / PRAWN Mk II now, wich has 2 speed boost, 2 hull strengthen and 2 power efficiency modules pre-installed so they don't take up space in the upgrade slots.

SeaglideMapControls by Randy Knapp
Sets F to toggle map of the seaglide and Right-Click to only toggle the lights. No more hours of clicking to turn of the damn terrain map!

MoreSeamothUpgrades by ahk1221
Adds a depth module mk. IV and V for the seamoth as well as a drill arm module and a thermal reactor. Basically allows you to use the Seamoth in the deep biomes where normally only a PRAWN would survive.

Habitat Control Panel by Randy Knapp
Adds a control panel with build in beacon to your habitat construction tool. Allows to change the color of internal and external walls and adds a slot for a power cell in case you need some emergency power for your base.

CustomBeacons by Randy Knapp
Set any Beacon Blip to more colors and more awesome icons.

AutoSortLockers by Randy Knapp
Adds custom Lockers that automatically sort items when put them into the AutoSorter. Set your own criterias for specific lockers and change their color and stuff. Very nice for people that would like to know where their goddamn copper that they definitely remember having is.

Decorations Mod by OSubMarin
Adds a bunch (Actually more like a metric fuckton) of awesome decorations and new plants for your nice little sea base.

White Lights by Randy Knapp
Allows you to customize the color of vehicle lights. Just change some values inside the config.txt.

ExteriorPlantPots by ahk1221
Adds the 3 standard plant pots, except those ones can be placed outside and filled with water plants.

Vehicle Module Fabricator by PrimeSonic
Adds a fabricator that can fabricate all vehicle upgrades. No more running to your moonpool again. Also compatible with other mods that add their own upgrades.

Custom Load Screen by Kylinator25
Allows you to use your own image file for the load screen.

Base Light Switch by ahk1221
Adds a light switch to your base that will turn off the internal lights. Neat, but not that useful.

I did all of this, but for some reason, there is no mod section in settings, one time it worked, but stopped working after i quit and rejoined
Do we make a mod? Or we just mod the game? (Pls upvote or........ i will [bad word] you)
Thanks for this. Any modders out there able to add a glass dome for MPRs??
This is the post I've been waiting for!! Thanks!!
this is a great guide for new subnautica modders qmods has a new page
https://www.nexusmods.com/subnautica/mods/201
just in case anyone needs it
I was wondering how you can install mods on the pc version of the game since I want more base parts and vehicles to ram into reapers. Can anyone explain how to do so?
nexusmods.com/Subnautica
If you can’t figure it out then join the Subnautica modding discord server
Find the mod you want on the Subnautica nexus, then follow the instructions. You’ll need to start with the Qmods modloader, as that’s the base for everything. There’s not many mods that add the things you want, so you might be disappointed.
Thank you, and thats okay
As the title suggests, I am looking to install mods for the game (specifically the Xbox game pass for PC version) and I don't know what folder to put them in to make them work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know anything about the Xbox game pass for PC, I'm playing on Steam. What I do is look for exciting mods on nexusmods.com and click on download. If the mod needs other mods to function, a popup will tell you which ones that would be. Many (most of them? all of them?) need QModManager to run, which can also be found on nexusmods.
My folder structure looks like this:
Steam\steamapps\common\Subnautica\QMods, and all the other mods go into that QMods folder.
I got it on the xbox app on pc not on xbox. All the tutorials say to go to like stream but I dont have steam. Do I use vortex folder like what folder do I go to?
Does anyone know if mods can be downloaded and managed on a pirated copy of Subnautica? I've been interested in modding the game. A mod that has gotten my attention is also the Multiplayer mod but i am struggling to find a way to play it without having a copy of the game on Steam
Hello u/Crafty-Marionberry40, Have an error and want help? Please provide these details when submitting your post. -

Best bet is downloading the mod pack someone on csrinru created for the game. If I recall it comes with the multi-player mod as well as an assortment of other mods. The uploader removed the anti-piracy checks/code from a bunch of mods.
can anyone here help me understand how i could install subnautica mods properly on mac? haven’t found any useful guides for mac users :( i’ve been trying for ages but i always get everything mixed up and confused because one tutorial wasn’t clear enough. thanks!
Go to https://www.nexusmods.com/subnautica/mods/1108 and carefully follow the instructions under “macOS (gib)”.
I don’t use lots of mods, but installing BepInEx was pretty straightforward (if you’re comfortable with the terminal). After that, many mods are installed by just expanding a download and moving it into the plugins folder.
hi. it says “no such file or directory” when i say yes to proceed and i’m extremely confused. i did what the terminal asked. is there something i’m missing?
hi

i cant find where to put mods and ive been looking for about 3 hours
At least that's how It worked last year.
im launching from vortex does that do anything?
Okay, I just remembered something. When I played Subnautica, I used unofficial copy. I had to install older version because newer did not support mods without being licensed or smth.
I don't know. I never used Vortex.
Try to use internal guide/ help of Vortex. There should be one. Or search «How install subnautica mods with Vortex»
what is the game directory
im using C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\UnknownWorldsEntertainmen.GAMEPREVIEWSubnautica_1.0.7.0_x64__bh1f6rvenfkm2\subnautica\QMods
Is that the directory you installed the game into? If yes, that's it
ty ill try
i tryed and it didnt work
Which mods?
qmod and water levels
