TL;DR The "Attack on Titan" anime closely follows the manga but includes some notable differences, particularly in pacing, scene arrangement, and character development. Key differences include Eren's vision in chapter one, Mikasa's tattoo, and changes in fight sequences and arcs.
Character Development and Scene Cuts
One of the significant differences between the manga and anime is the depth of character development. The manga delves more into the characters of Levi, Erwin, and Historia, offering scenes that were either shortened or cut in the anime [2:1]. For example, the conversation between Grisha and Kruger was altered, impacting the delivery of crucial lines
[2:2].
Pacing and Scene Arrangement
The anime tends to reorder scenes and speed up the pacing compared to the manga. This is especially evident in Season 3, where many scenes are shortened or rearranged [3:1]. The uprising arc in Season 3 Part 1 was notably different, with events being rearranged and some parts shortened
[5:1].
Specific Plot Differences
There are several specific plot differences between the manga and anime. In the first chapter of the manga, Eren has a vision of Mikasa rather than seeing future events [5:1]. Additionally, Mikasa has a tattoo on her wrist in the manga, which is not shown in the anime
[5:1]. The second fight between Eren and the female titan differs, with Eren being defeated quickly in the manga without entering a fiery rage mode
[5:1]. Moreover, Ymir’s flashback occurs after the basement reveal in the manga, unlike its placement in Season 2 of the anime
[5:1].
Censorship and Visual Differences
The manga generally contains less censorship, especially concerning gore, allowing for a more graphic depiction of events [4:6]. The anime benefits from superb animation, artwork, music, and directing, providing an engaging audio-visual experience that the manga cannot offer
[2:3].
Conclusion
Both the manga and anime have their unique strengths. The manga offers detailed storytelling and character exploration, while the anime provides dynamic visuals and sound. Fans often choose based on their preferred medium, whether they value detailed narrative or visual spectacle [2:4].
I started reading the manga after I finished season 3 but when I decided to read chapter 1 Eren’s dreams under the tree was different. For those who both read the manga and watched the anime what other differences exists beside that one.
Choose the correct flair for your post, this is extremely important.
If the post is flaired "Season 1" or "Season 2" or doesn't have a flair, do not discuss Season 3 or manga in the comments or in the post.
If the post is flaired "Season 3 Part 1", "Season 3 Part 2" or "SEASON 4 [TRAILER/VISUALS]", do not discuss anything manga related.
Flair any Season 3 Part 2 posts or anything beyond that (S4, manga), otherwise your post will be removed.

Hey all, I’ve been a huge AOT nerd since the anime first debuted and since then I’ve kept up to date with both the manga and anime (including rereading the season 1 portion of the manga). I personally can’t decide which medium I enjoy more and just wanted to hear others opinions on it. On one hand I love the depth and detail the manga delves into, but I also enjoy the more concise nature of the anime. I’ve compared the two repeatedly and can’t tell if the anime loses story quality due to its cuts or if the manga is bogged down by my over explanation. Opinions?
Afaik, there weren't many scenes cut from the manga like everyone says. Except for the uprising arch which was very different, the anime only cut some very minor dialogue. The only one you should care about though is the scene with Kruger and Grisha, some of the lines they cut really takes away the impact from the "you started this story" line.
Anime - WIT Studio and their superb animation, artwork, music and directing!
The only downside to anime is that they cut some of my favorite scenes :/
Wait, which scenes? In fact I was under the impression that they added a few scenes
Mostly scenes that delve into the characters of Levi, Erwin, Historia. See:
It's ultimately up to your general preferred medium. The manga is good if you want most of the full details, while the anime is there if you want audio-visuals.
The anime cuts bits out, however i do love watching the battles animated
The manga is fantastic, I think the way the story unfolds is amazing and once you start you can't stop reading.
Cause I want to get around reading the manga does the anime follow the mangas well?
S1 and S2 are generally very faithful, with a few exceptions (the end of S1 is a lot more overly dramatic than the manga, some character development is cut or changed, and there's some filler in the anime) but S3 diverges a bit more. S3 has been reordering the scenes and speeding up the pacing, resulting in many scenes being shortened or cut.
Prefer not to answer
Yes
I completely finished the whole anime and that’s because I was introduced to AOT through a friend of mine and got hooked to the story line character development etc (trying not to spoil anything for those still catching up lol)
I’m halfway through the first 3 volumes and so far haven’t noticed any MAJOR differences.
I’m still optimistic, so list any major PROS to reading the manga and I guess try not to put any spoilers lol
& yes, I’m of the fraction of us who feels, EREN DID NO WRONG 🥹
Don’t come for me lol
I did the same two and the anime it mostly follows the manga the only differences I can think of off the top of my head are the training being more like flashbacks and in the anime they had to lengthen the stonehess fight
Makes sense , I just feel like there won’t be much of a difference but I do expect more details from the manga of course
There’s also less censorship when it comes to gore

Nah, I read 16 books of the manga then watched the anime
im doing the same too! but the 1st omnibus was out of stock so im just reading them first online T^T
I’ve been wondering for a while if there are any major differences in the manga to the anime?
They are quite similar but here is list of some things from the manga that are changed in the anime:
If Eren gets beaten quickly in the manga, how do they get to Annie?
Eren gets beaten and Annie starts gets away, while she is climbing the wall, Eren manages to reach the wall and throws Mikasa up the wall where she cuts Annie’s fingers, she falls and Eren holds her against the ground while the scouts get her out of the titan.
The end of S1 is different, S3 P1 was changed heavily, and there was also bits of conversation between Grisha and the Owl cut out as well.

So, i already watched anime until season 3 (haven’t watched the season 4) and my friend told me to read the manga, he said that there is a slight difference between manga and anime. And now, I already read the manga until the chapter where Annie chases Eren in the forest (season 1 for Anime) and actually I didn’t find any difference? So, is there an actual difference or no? Because if there is no, i just want to watch the anime and probably skip the manga until the season 4.
The main differences are in chapters 50-70 (uprising arc) and 86-89
I was an anime only at first, but now I highly recommend attentively reading the manga in its entirety. As much as I love what Wit has done, especially when it comes to action scenes, world and character designs, there are things the manga conveys much better, character interactions chief among them.
the anime was only better than the manga in terms of story telling in the first 2 seasons. After season two i recommend you to read the manga

chap 51-foward
Usurping arc has the most cuts in the anime Same whit the marley arc Others are nearly the same
These are the parts where entire scenes or events were heavily altered or removed for the anime:
Chapter 1 (corresponding to S1E1)
Chapters 31-33(corresponding to S1E23-25)
Chapters 50-58(corresponding to S2E12 and S3E1-4)
Chapters 93-97(corresponding to S4E2&3)
Outside of those, there's always some changes here and there. Sometimes the manga has more detailed explanations, sometimes the anime can improve upon certain scenes or add more details.
Hey guys I made a video where we compare the episode to the manga chapters that its adapting and let me tell you that there are some interesting differences, I put a lot of effort into these so it would mean the world to me if you check it out!

I’ve read the manga and watched the anime, I preferred watching the anime much more
Fair enough
That’s probably a me problem though. I feel like I read through it too fast sometimes and missed stuff. Amazing artwork though
That's all. Id just like to know how much different it is if I read it.
Quite a bit. I totally get why they made some of the changes they did. Primarily having our main crew involved in more of the games because I dont think a TV audience would like the jumping around of characters. It is definitely a bummer they had to cut down on some side characters, though, and changed a couple of games. I also found arisu to be having more of an emotional struggle in the manga. I get why they changed that for the show as well. No one wants to watch a season of someone sulking, even if it makes sense lol
Quite a lot of things were changed in the live action adaptation. I love the show (watched it first) but when I read the manga I was like “I’m kind of glad I didn’t read the manga first because they changed up so many things for the worse that I would have been frustrated about had I read the manga first”
They removed an entire important character and changed multiple characters in various ways, got rid of/replaced games (usually with less impactful games, such as the first game of the adaptation where Arisu suddenly has a photographic memory he never uses elsewhere… that was a show original game), and also aged everyone up (which isn’t necessarily bad, just different)
I like that take. I've been thinking about reading it and now I think i will. Thank you
I’d say it’s more simple than the mange the manga is also way darker
Quite a lot, I prefer the manga so I recommend reading it
A lot. Entire character backstories and portrayals, Game Rules, Plot Events, are completely different. Live Action adds and removes tons of things so both mediums are entirely different despite following the same general major plot points.

As someone who read the manga before the anime came out I‘m feeling kinda dissapointed about missing and changed scenes which were imo way better in the manga than the anime. Especially considering the anime got delayed one season. In comparison to other series like MDUD or Fuufu Ijou they‘re too far away from the original. What‘s your opinion on it?
P.S. I haven’t read the LN and it‘s not a rant as I‘ll still am happy about an anime and like watching it
Tbh I read both LN and manga and I’m pretty disappointed yes the voice acting was incredible and so does the animation as well, but the change from manga and LN to anime was simply unacceptable I’m not ok with the scene that change at all
Wait how much was change? I'm only just reading the manga and also got surprised by how different ep 2 is.
Meh I just watch preview of ep 3 don’t worry masha screen time and Alya back story will come back
Which one should I read? Manga or LN? LN is original source so I thought of reading it.
Does anyone know if the "bathroom scene" got deleted or will play out later? I'm an AnimeOnly.
What bathroom scene?
No idea I just saw someone mentioning it in another thread
Well, I understand the disappointment but it is what it is.. From the Manga reader, it felt like there’s so many scene changes, but from the LN reader they’ve only change and remove some dialogues. I also heard a lot of complaints like this, but the problem is most people from the manga are not aware that the Light Novel is the “Original” source. Considering that the manga is so far away from the whole story.
