What Redditors are Saying

Best Anime to Watch After Attack on Titan

TL;DR

  • Consider "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood," "Vinland Saga," "86," "Death Note," and "Monster" for similar themes of depth, politics, and thrilling storytelling.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

This anime is frequently recommended as a follow-up to Attack on Titan due to its intense storytelling, complex characters, and moral themes. It combines action with philosophical questions about the nature of humanity, much like AoT [1:4][2:6][3:1]. It's noted for its excellent pacing and emotional depth, making it a solid choice for those who appreciated the narrative complexity of AoT [5:1].

Vinland Saga

Another popular recommendation is "Vinland Saga," which shares a historical setting and explores themes of war, revenge, and personal growth. While not as dark as AoT, it offers a similar feeling of oppression and struggle [1:7][4:5]. The series is praised for its character development and realistic portrayal of violence and societal issues [5:7].

86 (Eighty-Six)

"86" is recommended for its high stakes, well-developed characters, and socio-political themes that resonate with those in AoT. The series shares a composer with AoT, which helps create a familiar atmosphere for fans [4:1]. Viewers appreciate its mature storyline and depiction of wartime struggles [3:4].

Death Note and Monster

Both "Death Note" and "Monster" are suggested for their psychological depth and thrilling narratives. "Death Note" features a cat-and-mouse game between two intellectuals, while "Monster" delves into moral ambiguity and human nature [1:1][2:1]. These series offer intense storytelling that can appeal to AoT fans looking for complex plots and character dynamics [2:2].

Diverse Recommendations

For those open to exploring different genres, "Made in Abyss" offers a dark fantasy experience, while "Tengoku Daimakyou" (Heavenly Delusion) provides a dystopian setting with an intricate storyline [4:6][5:2]. Some suggest taking a break or rewatching AoT to fully appreciate other shows without direct comparison [2:3][5:6].

These recommendations provide a range of options for viewers seeking to fill the void left by AoT, whether through similar themes or entirely new experiences.

ORIGINAL POST

Aside from the anime that aired on American TV growing up, I never really sat down and watched an entire series until now! I just started Part 2 of the final season of AoT, and I love it so much that I do not want it to end!!! But now I am worried I started with such a highly rated show. What anime should I watch next that can match this level of storytelling?

What drew me to Attack on Titan was its themes of oppression, politics, and how they reflect the real world today. I would love something with a similar depth. Any recommendations?

i really struggled after i finished AOT. i couldn't get myself to watch any other anime. i tried a bunch and would drop them until i tried Death Note. now i personally don't think it's on the same level as AOT or very similar to (i'm wicked bias as AOT is still my all-time favorite) but i really enjoyed another complex main character, a thrilling story that kept me on the edge of my seat and hit the ground running right from episode one.

if you aren't familiar, it's about a high school student who discovers a notebook. this notebook has a special ability where if you write down a name in it, that person dies (with some rules and exceptions). that student, Light, quickly takes it upon himself to cleanse the world from evil.

Idk why but I started death note after AoT and I just thought it was trying too hard to make it seem like Kira and L are there geniuses who are always one step ahead. Just felt like it would blow my mind 10 years ago but now it's like okay it's kinda getting old

I just recently finished watching attack on titan for the first time. It was the first anime that I have ever watched. Now I don’t know what to do with my life after watching that masterpiece. I’m not sure any other anime will live up to aot for me. So if anyone has some anime recommendations that might be slightly similar to aot that are good i would appreciate it.

Naoki Urasawa's Monster, it's my absolute favourite anime. Kind of similar in moral themes and it's way more grounded than other anime as well. Maybe Chainsaw Man? Very well written and animated, although there's only one season so far. Has a great captivating lore and characters. Berserk is also often compared to AOT as a story of a cruel world, the protagonist and the antagonist are amazing personalities that clash in tragedy. But I gotta warn you, it's very bleak.

Demon Slayer is very much inferior to AOT in terms of writing but it has incredible animation and fight sequences, so if you liked that aspect in AOT, you might enjoy it as well.

Other than that, I highly recommend Shinichiro Watanabe's works, especially Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. They are rightfully considered classic. If you're okay with series that are basically like slice of life with one overarching plot, you'll love them. Watanabe is a master of blending genres (Cowboy Bebop is pretty much sci-fi/noir/western, while Samurai Champloo is Edo Japan mixed with 90s hip hop culture) and his endings are INCREDIBLE. As someone who had huge problems with AOT ending, it means a lot to me.

More obvious classics are Death Note and Neon Genesis Evangelion. The first one is also similar in moral themes, it has a plot that hooks you fast and it was a gateway into anime for many people. NGE is more of a mindfuck mecha. Will hit different if you're depressed.

If you like something even more mindfucking and existential after watching NGE, check out Serial Experiments Lain. Ergo Proxy is alright as well.

If you're in the mood for something silly, watch FLCL (super surreal coming-of-age story that inspired the animation for ATLA) or Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (a wholesome story about friendship and art, legitimately the best portrayal of schoolgirls in anime that I've seen so far).

I think that's all I watched so far that I liked. And please, don't think you've ruined anime for yourself like others say. It's a very versatile genre that you've just dipped your toes in and you only have a slight idea of what you might enjoy. Keep an open mind and I wish you good luck on this journey!

I would give a completely different answer - don't follow all these suggestions, and go for completely different genre than AOT so that your mind wouldn't subconsciously compare them to AOT to balance it out. Frieren could be a good start.

I’ve only watched a handful of anime’s -Dragon ball -Naruto -Jujutsu Kaisen -Solo leveling -Deathnote -And now Attack on Titan

I’m not sure what to watch next because wow AoT in my eyes was almost perfect. The story telling from the beginning to end, the action, character design, and so much more had me enthralled.

If anyone has any suggestions based on what I’ve watched so far I’d love to hear it! I’ve heard Demon Slayer is really good

That’s an intense experience going through AoT. There are others that are as well done, but it’s gonna feel different for you. As it should.

Like anything, never gonna get that exact feel because it’s specific to that show and time.

I’d recommend Full Metal Alchemist, something that also has meaning and intensity.

HowlingWolvez · 1 year ago

As a certified “Fullmetal Alchemist Pusher” I am going to combine the other 2 suggestions. Since you like AoT, you’ll like 2003. It’s a darker and edgier story than the OG manga/Brotherhood (although Brotherhood is widely considered ‘better’, and is actually my favorite of the two, 2003 is a really good ‘bleak’ show). It also adapts the first part of the manga better then Brotherhood bc Brotherhood lowkey assumes you have seen 2003 so the first 12 episodes are rushed as they are pretty much the exact same content as the first 25 of 2003.

IMPORTANT NOTE: After this point 2003 has a completely different plot then the manga/Brotherhood.

So I always recommend if people are “serious” about wanting to watch FMA to do 2003 first then Brotherhood. Especially because you are not watching the same show twice. I cannot emphasize how off the rails 2003 goes in terms of the manga plot. This then gives you two amazing shows for the price of 1.

Similarities: wartime country with protected society and nonchelant elite class running the military. Expendable human life, intense character connections and realistic action and consequences (talking wounds/death here not magic/tech)

Dofferences: 86 has more mature storyline and character progression (often AOT just feels petchulant) IMO with better pacing and depiction of socio-political environment. Also more of a tear jerker for me as my connections to AOT outcomes werent as reinforced by tge perspective.

Best anime to watch after Attack on Titan?

Posted by AverageAF_02 · in r/anime · 1 year ago

Alright, people. Now that Attack on Titan has ended, it’s time for me to ask the billion-dollar question. What anime should I watch next to fill the void?

Preferably something in the dark fantasy and/or thriller genre. Either ongoing or complete. (Not unfinished, i.e., abandoned and won’t get another season. For example, Noragami.)

If you love aot so much that you cant replace another anime. And has a felling of void in you heart.

I tried to move on after watching season 3 by

1)take a break 2)after that fullmetal alchemsit brotherhood. 3)then,try kabanwei of iron fortress. Same studio, similar(probably a rip of aot). Its looks like a copy. 4)then try to watch other animes. But still now there arent much animes which can full fill that much excitement etc..OR might match ur expectation But they are good to watch Without expectation.

#HUNTER X HUNTER post 50 episodes it becomes really dark 148 episodes and good anime

1)Assasination clasroom, one piece (if u havent watched it)[NOT DARK] , jjk, demon slayed(animation wise both), [LITTLE /MUCH DARKER]

2)VINLAND SAGA(DARK) , PROMISED NEVERLAND (SEASON 1)[OCCASIONALLY DARK] . you may not like seaosn 2 of vinland saga, and please dont watch season 2 of promised neverland. Both are good

3)PLUTO, MORIARTY THE PATRIOT, Bacano(STORY WISE) (NOT DARK), BUT PLOT STORY IS AMAZING

4)MOVIES:YOUR NAME, WEATHERING WITH YOU, SWORD OF STRANGER, #GRAVE OF FIREFLIE#, ETC..not dark but good movies to watch

kabaneri of the iron fortress. It was also made by Wit studio. Mc kinda like Eren, hes half human , half monster. The world is taken over by zombies and everyone lives in fortress cities and they move between cities through armored war trains. Its honestly really good, a lot of ppl say its a AOT clone but i dont think think its a 1 to 1 copy despite the similarities. But its an incomplete anime and more than likely wont be continued, theres like 2 seasons and 1 movie.

You can try monster if u want something dark and a bit thriller.

I was having a hard time picking something to watch in between the long breaks between seasons and then parts of seasons for attack on titan. I ended up watching Eighty-Six 86 with fill the void nicely, and they even share a composer so the music helped me feel connected a lot faster.

Just listen to the first song of the OST and you'll immediately know what I mean :)

Great show, great characters, stakes are high. If you enjoyed AoT, i'm sure you will love 86 as well. There's still some left to be animated but what we have so far is fantastic.

An anime that I feel doesn't get enough recognition is Tengoku Daimakyou (Heavenly Delusion). Excellent storyline and the writing is fantastic. Similar to AoT in the sense that it doesn't spoon-feed you anything (I can't watch shows that are easily predictable). In fact, you may need to re-watch the anime more than once to fully grasp the story. It also has the similar "dystopian" element as AoT with plenty of action, beautiful animation, and a few tear-jerking moments.

Ah it's simply fantastic, and season 2 is currently in the works. I cannot sing high enough praises, definitely give it a shot!!!

What anime should I watch after Attack on Titan?

Attack on Titan was amazing. I would rate season 1 a 8.5/10, season 2 a 9/10, season 3 part 1 a 9.5/10, and season 3 part a 10/10. My favorite scene is probably Erwin’s speech, I love speeches like those. It was just so beautiful and had an amazing story. I want to watch a high quality anime like Attack on Titan. Before I watched Attack on Titan, I watched Cowboy Bebop, which made me feel a similar feeling. The anime was just so beautiful, it had great animation, an amazing ost, etc.

Basically, I just want an anime that’s beautiful. It has emotional scenes, it has great characters, an amazing story, etc.

Which anime on this list should I watch next:

ano natsu de matteru

march comes in like a lion

monster

nagi no asukara

neon genesis evangelion

nichijou

orange

outlaw star

rurouni kenshin

samurai champloo

showa genroku rakugo shinju

It was Attack on Titan which got me watching anime on a regular basis, starting in July this year. I loved it, and the next series that I watched was Violet Evergarden. Totally different genre, but still incredibly high production values.

Even though it's not on your list, Violet Evergarden fits your description of: "I just want an anime that’s beautiful. It has emotional scenes, it has great characters, an amazing story, etc."

It's on Netflix. And don't forget the 'special' (OVA) which is separately listed on Netflix and, chronologically, fits between episodes 4 and 5.

Fullmetal Alchemist (2004 version(followed by the Fullmetal Alchemist movie: Conqueror of Shamballa)), The Seven Deadly Sins (2015), Death Note, Trigun (1998), Claymore, Konosuba (2016), Fate/stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works (2014), Jobless Reincarnation, Bofuri, The Rising of the Shield Hero, Log Horizon, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Steinsgate (2011( followed by the bonus episode "Egoistic Poriomania")), Wolf's Rain (2003), Sword Art Online (seasons 1 and 2), Spy x Family, Apothecary Diaries, Terminator Zero, The Eminence in Shadow, The Twelve Kingdoms (2002), Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom, Blue Eye Samurai (while technically not anime, it's a pretty great watch)....my opinion on Steinsgate is that u must watch several episodes each sitting, because that is about how long it takes for the plot to move along

Movies: Karas (2005), Appleseed (2004), Princess Mononoke (1997), Howl's Moving Castle (2004), Steamboy (2004), Blood: The Last Vampire (2000), Perfect Blue (1997)

Action with some romance: Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry, Akame ga Kill, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress.

And I want to recommend Mushoku Tensei. This anime for me has the best execution in the "adventure" part. Sure we can see there are many negative sentiments about this show online but you never know when we never try. We need to learn to form our own opinion. And you're getting into anime means eventually you need to get used to sensitive topics.

If you haven't watched many anime and want to round out a foundation with at least some similarities to those series while being on a very high level of overall quality, my "foundational" recommendations would be:

Monster, Vinland Saga, FMAB, Steins Gate, NGE, Re:zero.
