TL;DR
Tavern Brawler Builds
The Tavern Brawler build is a standout favorite among players due to its sheer power and versatility. This build often involves classes like Berserker Barbarian or Monk, leveraging the Tavern Brawler feat to maximize strength-based attacks [1:0],
[2:6]. Players enjoy using this build to throw enemies and objects, creating a dynamic and engaging combat experience
[3:2],
[3:7]. The build's ability to deal massive damage through creative use of the environment makes it both effective and entertaining.
Assassin Gloomstalker Builds
Another highly recommended build is the Assassin Gloomstalker, which combines the stealthy abilities of an Assassin Rogue with the ranged prowess of a Gloomstalker Ranger [1:5],
[3:5]. This build excels in delivering high burst damage, especially in the first round of combat, making it ideal for players who enjoy strategic planning and execution. The synergy with specific gear, such as the Deathstalker Mantle, further enhances its effectiveness
[1:5].
Swords Bard Builds
Swords Bard builds are praised for their flexibility and role-playing potential. These builds often involve dual-wielding crossbows or swords, allowing for a mix of melee and ranged combat [3:1]. The Bard class offers unique dialogue options that enhance the narrative experience, making it a favorite for players who value storytelling alongside combat
[4:2]. Variants like the 10/1/1 and 10/2 setups are noted for their strong performance
[1:7].
Fun and Unique Builds
Players also highlight the importance of fun and creativity in their builds. For instance, the Storm Sorcerer build is favored for its thematic lightning spells and powerful area-of-effect capabilities [3:9],
[3:11]. Additionally, some players enjoy experimenting with unconventional setups, such as combining different class features and items to create unexpected synergies
[4:9].
Community Resources
For those looking to explore more builds, community resources like guides from Prestigious Juice and Morgana Evelyn are recommended [1:9],
[2:1]. These guides offer detailed insights into build progression, itemization, and strategies for different stages of the game. Engaging with these resources can provide valuable inspiration for both new and experienced players.
I've been in this subreddit for a while, and here's all the S Tier builds I've been able to gather. Am I missing any?
Prestigious Juice is the definitive source for some key builds, particularly Fire Acuity.
I don’t really like that OP only linked to his own guides that are worse than PJ’s. It feels academically dishonest. None of these ideas were developed in a vacuum, we build on each other’s ideas, and the right thing to do is acknowledge that.
The mods really should sticky a master post with PJs builds at the top of this sub.
They are the end game boss of all builds BG3.
Dude, this is no academia. We aren't obligated to know what everyone has come up with. I certainly don't know who 1st came up with Fire Acuity and when, because I came up with it myself too, long before I joined this sub. Everyone can use bg3.wiki and fextralife and look up game mechanics from there and come up with their own ideas. It's not hard to know of Arcane Acuity once you've played the game and tried it, then it's not hard to look up the wiki or fextralife for sources of Acuity.
I haven't once clicked to view a guide on this sub. I don't care if they exist. I like coming up with my own builds and no one's telling me I can't enjoy what I like to enjoy. No one's telling me how I play my game. No one's gonna say I haven't done what I have done and voting down me isn't going to change that. I came up with Fire Acuity build, not claiming the 1st nor the best, but I'm sure everyone can, and many others have. Maybe the OP have too, it's not rocket science.
Yeah replace the fire acuity self-plug in the OP with the original definitive guide. Also cross out the 'skill monkey' build and replace it with Swords Bard and this list of top builds is ok.
I was gonna do that (and add Light Cleric & Assassin Gloomstalker), but Reddit isn't letting me edit the post.
Assassin Gloomstalker
2Pal 10Bard SSB
1Fighter 1Wiz 10Bard
RadOrb/Reverb Light Cleric
Free-BladeWard Life Cleric
11Sorc 1Lock Fire Acuity
RadOrb/Reverb Light Cleric
I just put this build on Shart in my current play through as a SmiteBard with Phalar Aluve. The Phalar Procs + Spirit Guardian + RadOrb/Reverb damage is insane.
Please make sure to mention inherent synergy with The Deathstalker Mantle.
You effectively break the 90% of encounters with Deep Gnome/Lightfoot Halfling, Assassin Gloomstalker with this piece of equipment long before getting to Greater Invisibility. Not a single full turn will fully resolve with you going in and out of encounter and reseting turns. Each turn is effectively first turn of combat, which gives you insane burst through combination of Dread Ambush and Assassinate, while enemies won't have time to act. This build changes the game into something that doesn't even look like D&D.
The only places were dip-in, dip-out doesn't work are specifically Myrkul, Final Boss and most likely Raphael (haven't tested this one personally) due to being forced into arena with no retreat paths and either soft or hard timer, but Myrkul can be slain with good old Greater Invisibility cheese and so can Raphael.
Skill monkey on their but not either sword bard setup? ???
this list absolutely needs 10/1/1 and 10/2 ssb, those are probably the 2 most mentioned S tier builds on the sub in general.
I was shocked at just how much turn 1 damage that build did. With the high dex you need you’re almost always going first anyway, so you just board wipe so much on the first turn it’s crazy.
Yeah, I virtually stumbled into the pure swords bard, dual hand-xbow build, and it was S tier. And I know there are variants, like 11 sb/ 1 wizard, etc.
I recently finished larians previous masterpiece Divinity original sin 2 and im about 20 hours into bg3 now. But i haven't rly settled on any builds yet.
So please give me your best most fun builds!
Gloomstalker Build, which I followed Morgana Evelyn on Youtube for that guide, so much fun after lv3, and very OP.
Ima simple guy. Duegar gloomstalker/assassin is my favorite build. You can abuse so many of the games mechanics
The beat part about that build/guide is there is no bs about how its soooo powerful then 5 min in gets to the point that all you need to do is be level 12 and have already picked up your BiS from act 3. Yeah thanks that's not helpful for actually progressing through the game.
Just sit back and snipe people with advantage, getting steadily more powerful as you level. Zero bs or shenanigans needed.
I HATE how so many guides are like
>Items for this build are [act 3 boss reward], [act 2 boss reward], and [act 3 boss reward]
>The key combo for this build is [level 9 class feature] and [act 2 item]
Kudos to Cephalopocalypse whose build guides go through real progressions. He will say “you should really do single class until level X as this one class, and then respec, otherwise you’re too weak without the extra attack/feat/level 3 spells.” Though even he is pretty light on act 1/2 itemization.
I play only Honor Mode nowadays and the major filter is usually just getting to level 5, sometimes 6-8 for a lot of multi classes. There’s plenty of difficult fights after that, but the bar is a lot lower for finding a strong build since there’s just a lot of room to work with.
What I really need is a well balanced party that can handle fights at level 4 with limited items, consumables and spell slots.
One annoyance I have is that certain items (ring of flinging for throw damage, the bless on heal ring) really stack the deck for certain builds/strats at this point in the game.
Exactly! Morgana's builds are designed for Act 1 and it really does shine. I follow another Youtuber who has so many class suggestions but most of it is clearly for Act 2 & 3.
Morgana's guide got me the golden dice, I did cheese Act 3 by having Gale sarifice himself, but Act 1 is where I was having troubles until I get to lv3-4.
Her builds are SO fun!!! Her rec for the Titanstring bow with strength elixers was such a game changer for my archer build
It's been done to death, but tavern brawler, Barbarian chucker is insanely fun. Huge damage dealer with the right stuff, and you can basically run around throwing enemies at eachother. Now with Giant barbarian you can also boot people off cliffs
Why barb? I currently have a fighter Eldritch knight laezel that's killing it
Tavern brawler moon druid is also great fun. Owlbear that hits with the force and precision of an orbital strike is nothing to scoff at.
And tavern brawler open hand monk is a great problem solver for all problems that can be punched to death.
In fact, tavern brawler for everyone!
As a fellow tavern brawler moon druid has your owlbear looked odd recently lol? When I wildshape into one he looks kinda derpy and there's some clipping issues. I know it's off-topic but I don't know if it's a mod I'm using or if others are experiencing this.
You can also have a caster use enlarge on top of that for the triple huge barb
My throw build with all the items is beyond insane, easily 100+ damage a turn and reverb stacking on nearby enemies with the trident is so good. I found a weird glitch with a buddy where he threw a smokepowder bomb at an enemy with a lot of health, my special trident hit right after and per the combat log it 'killed' the smokepowder bomb on the enemy which caused thunder reverb on every instance of force damage and somehow caused 200 damage in one toss....
Not to mention the Giant's Kick is incredibly satisfying.
I'm curious what your favourite kind of character you guys like to play is, pure fun factor, whether or not their the strongest, what is the most enjoyable experience for you?
tavern brawler berserker barb. Karlach throws everything that isn't nailed down. Ingots, hammers, greataxes, daggers, javelins, bombs, barrels - and of course my trusty returning pike, the occasional goblin, the thief rogue and furniture.
It's versatile, incredibly fun and proof you don't need a wizard to cast fireball.
Otherwise, I like storm sorcerers. I just think they are neat.
Currently running my storm sorcerer half elf Tav and loving it . Karlach is exactly this - TB throwzerker build usually using a bloodlust elixir. 7 throws per round if you get a kill and are raging for the bonus action throw. It’s disgusting (but great fun).
Tavern brawler berserker is so blatantly overpowered that I have to make a point to not use it for the sake of the run not being free
It doesn't have to be berzerker, I am playing with a throw-happy monk who also does up to 60 damage with an unarmed attacked, more than any weapon attack.
Had Karlach as a Tavern Brawler Berserker in my party and dropped her because my other characters were doing more damage... Main character - Swords bard with dual-wield crossbows and Sharpshooter (pretty sure she's the main damage dealer for me right now ~8th level). Astarion - Assassin/Gloomstalker with Titanstring bow and club of Giant Strength. Shadowheart - Light cleric with radiant orb gear (for spell casting along with story reasons). Minthara - Paladin/Bard for those juicy, nasty smites and me desperately needing some type of tank-type character to protect my squishy ranged characters.
It's one of my complaints about the 4 character limit is that after my Tav and a character for storytelling I really only have 2 characters to choose from for my party at any one time.
On my latest honor mode attempt (rip) my throwzerker karlach threw nearly everything i owned at that stupid bid vine thingy in act 2. curse its resistance to piercing. From then on I just kept every hammer and axe I‘ve found on her for emergency cases
assassin gloomstalker astarion with cazadors dagger & sussar bark dagger. I can take out 100+ hp enemies if I get in my sneak attack, it's so dirty
Sorcerer as well as Wizard are kinda squishy in the beginning. Sorcerer is quite "broken" tbh tho - with quicken, you can cast 2 spells per turn, aka two fireballs at level 5.
This is far from optimal, but here is what I usually do (2nd playthrough with storm sorc): get the spell sniper feat, take eldritch blast. Later I go into a Reverberation build. Items to look out for: Boots of stormy clamor, Ring of the absolute force, Ring of spiteful thunder, Spineshudder amulet, Gloves of bellingerent skies , Callous glow ring, and ultimately, the legendary staff from lorroakan's, which i might or might not dual wield with Phalar Aluve (shriek). Basically in the end if you set it up right you pump out so much reverberation you basically knock enemies prone with magic missiles.
I take mostly lighting and cold spells, and thunderwave. Storm sorcerer gives you free flight after casting a level spell, so I get close, thunderwave, fly away. Later I hit people with magic missiles and twin haste so Karlach and Astarion can go brrrr.
I dunno it's fun. Respec is cheap enough if you need to swap spells.
It’s not really about doing anything particularly creative or interesting but rather using the basic spells with incredible effectiveness.
If you pair Storm Sorc with Tempest Cleric or have one in your party, you can do create water -> lightning chromatic orb -> destructive wrath (uses your divinity charge to max damage for lightning) -> luck of the far realms if you really want overkill and if you did twinned spell then you basically just wiped two enemies completely off the map regardless of their HP.
Even by like level 4-5 you will be doing hundreds of damage with the above combo. There are some resource constraints and you will need to sleep a lot but the tradeoff is insane top end damage
At level 5 you start twin casting haste at your 2 damage dealers and it gets good
I have done two storm sorcerers so far and it's definitely my favorite.
Get all the lightning spells and gear, especially the boots and the Sparkswall ring. I combine that with the Wavemother Robe in Act 3 and distance myself from my party, then electrocute anyone who comes near me but also heal myself by standing in electrocuted water with Create Water, and blast them with Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning.
I use the distance spell quite often (also twinned spells). It allows me to start fights from afar when none of my party is within range of the enemies (sometimes doesn't even trigger combat if we're obscured) and also allows me to target enemies that would be out of range for anyone else. It was very useful all through Act 1 when my HP was lower, like with the harpies, for example.
Plus I like zooming around the battle after almost every turn with Tempestuous Flight. On the second run, I rarely took any direct physical damage because I used it every time. I'd get up on ledges that other characters couldn't access and then rain down lightning/ice/fire from above.
Yes to Monk! But generally I take a hit to damage and go shadow monk. The stealth and mobility is addictive. The sound effects for shadow step tickle the right parts in my brain.
Not a biild persay but the Bard specific dialogue options are objectively the best part about the class and I will hear no dissenting opinions
The only downside is that Bard options are so objectively best, it just removes all choice from dialogue when they come up.
I'd love to hear more on this build.
I went swords bard for double handed shenanigans but my ac felt low without defensive flourish and ranged slashing was just too op with hand xbows.
My initial idea was ranged mobile to backline chumps and play stabby stabby with their face.
Only just reached the monastery and planning on bard 6/rouge 3/bard 9 but also might just go bard 12 for the flavour.
This is what I turned Astarion into. Can confirm he is a blast to play.
I did too! Ninja build with assassin and way of the shadow made him go from my trap and lock skillmonkey to that, plus disruptive in combat and a fantastic scout out of combat
Dude! Do you mind DMing me sort of a basic stat/spell guide for this? I’m completely new to this game and I want to play Bard but I’m a little overwhelmed by it all. Or at the very least worried about doing the wrong thing.
Don't worry at all about doing the wrong thing! You can respec everything about your character except for race, gender, and appearance for 100 gold, which is extremely cheap. You could even change entirely from a paladin to a bard to a warlock to a barbarian all in a single playthrough.
The very basic outline is:
That's the basic outline! You'll also want to keep an eye out for gloves of dexterity (they can be found late in act 1 on a merchant), which set your Dexterity to 18 no matter what your stat is. You can then respec and take all your Dex points and put them into Charisma, Constitution, or Wisdom as needed. It's a huge boost to your versatility.
I put the ring that negates blind on my gnome shadow monk
He drops a darkness bubble on the ground and murders everyone in it
Very fun
Pact of the Large Spicy Salami
Eldritch Knight
Bond weapon: Salami
Acid damage on hit ring to make it spicy.
Enlarge self
Throw large spicy salami at enemies.
Probably won't fit in the build, but 6 levels of Wildheart Barbarian lets you take the Chimpanzee ability that gives enemies Blind when you throw camp supplies at them.
I run a warlock 5 ancients 5 sword and board with mace of lathandar. I get 3 attacks with smites and a ton of charisma AC 24 with good late game armor. Lots of smites and spells. It’s a ton of fun
Not sure if that even counts as a "build", but I really really enjoyed a straight Ancients Paladin. I play with friends, and ancients is the only way to really be a proper healer (since most sources of healing are insignificant/ more to bring people back to life).
This allows me to optimize as much as I want to, without overshadowing my friends and making the game not fun for them (and in turn me), because I am supporting and enabling them, instead of outcompeting them as a striker.
So you get your auras, great healing, great spells like misty step, and you STILL can do amazing damage with smites (especially with the guaranteed crit from luck of the far realms) and are basically unkillable with super high AC and saves.
I say B-tier, I really mean underrated builds for this game. I browse this subreddit, and most everyone talks about the same builds over and over (looking at you Swords Bard!)
While these builds are incredibly powerful, most of them tend to trivialize encounters to the point where none of the other characters get to shine in combat at all.
Ban list!
(For discussion's sake, off the top of my head- feel free to add some to this ban list if necessary)
I'll start! I think Knowledge Domain Cleric is underrated for a CC focused spellcaster!
Edit: formatting
I’m playing one right now! I actually was thinking it would be an OP build, but Arcane Acuity doesn’t actually affect your Pact Weapon accuracy. I’m having a blast though. I built a drunken wrecking ball.
He wields Punch Drunk Bastard, wears Amulet of the Drunkard, Hat of Storm Scion whatever (arcane acuity on thunder damage), ring of Mystic Scoundrel + whatever other damage boosting ring, boots of stormy clamour + reverb gloves.
I try to have him pound a bottle of booze before the fight if possible, but he has lot of fun running into crowds with Armor of Agathys, drunkenly swinging his club around, knocking everyone down with the noise of his approach.
How'd you build the Tiger Barbarian BOOOAL build?
Div 2/lore x is one of the stronger builds in 5e I believe. Actually it might be eloquence over lore, but either way div 2 on a control/support bard is insanely good. Guaranteeing a spell goes off twice a day at least is amazing.
Pure moon druids are SO GOOD. Once the wild shape's health is down I still have nearly all of my spell slots to come out blasting, then bonus action back into another wild shape. They may be my favorite.
Both are great but I can’t stop adding Light Cleric 1 to everybody for Warding Flare. It’s good, not OP, but I just love clicking it and making a hit a miss lol
Did this warlock build for my first ever full playthrough. I went high dex, then in act 3 got the elven chain armor (gives med armor prof) and whichever cape gives you blur at the beginning of combat. Was pretty untouchable against most enemies
I have yet to face a act three boss that laezel cant solo kill in sub 2 rounds, actions surge+haste+GWM+damage riders is just silly damage.
A certain zappy dragon never even made it to his turn
Yeah. I made wyll pact of the blade this run through and have him dual wielding the musical swords. If you use EB to get arcane synergy he hits like a truck. He's not part of my core team this play through, but I might try it out as a Tav build next and also get the rapier from bringing wyll along at the end of act 2.
Full sorcerer is fun asf with good gear. Melting people with twinned firebolt and then quickened spell into an upcasted ray of fire is chef's kiss
Edit: stupid phone thought upcasted was meant to be updated
I think this build with Duelist's Prerogative is the coolest. You have double reactions with the Spore Druid reactions and the Monk counters. I also think OH monk with the Necrotic damage passive fits the flavor of spore druid very well.
I tend to enjoy playing non-multiclassed builds. Lore bard is one of my favorite play throughs. Making an enemy miss an attack or saving throw feels so good. The utility of two magical secrets. Also, Dissonant Whispers is a great use of a level one spell slot, and fear is a great way to really control the battle field when you are already concentrating. However, this build is not OP compared to the builds you listed above.
Buddy of mine wants to do tactician in our next multiplayer campaign (full party). But he doesn’t have any clue what to build, so give me your favorite/most fun builds.
Whether or not this is fun is very subjective because I personally enjoy being a shield bot, but:
Life Cleric 3 | Abjuration Wizard 9
Stack Warding Bond on all three of your allies, wear Adamantine Splint Armour for -2 damage, cast sanctuary on yourself and tank those hits! There are more items that help with this, like Warpiras Crown that heals you when you heal others, Ring of Salving which provides +2 on healing, and Periapt of Wound Closure which heals you for the max amount of any spells + stabilizes you if you're downed, to name a few.
You can also do Life 3 | Abjuration 7 | Wizard 2 so that you can cast Twin Shield of Faith on two allies & other concentration spells, Cold Dragon subclass gives you Armor of Agathys and
Or even Life 4 | Abjuration 8 so that you can get all three feat/ASI options. The Tough feat would be great for this build! This is probably the best option.
Light for warding flare reaction (or improved warding flair at level 6) would probably be a good shout in this build too!
Oh this is a great suggestion! I had been thinking Life for the extra heals, but Warding Flair is great! The only issue is I won't be taking Cleric past 3, so Warding Flare will only affect me, and with this build I plan to always have Sanctuary up if possible, so Warding Flare will have little value. :(
Brilliant. This is better than a similar idea build I was trying out on Shadowheart. Since you're experienced with it, are there cases when warding bond gets dropped during fast travel or going to camp? I had a case where I cast my three warding bonds after a long rest, yet at some point they all dropped. My spell spots were spent, but the conditions were no longer there.
While this is a super fun build it works best as a solo run.
I would definitely NOT recommend running this on a multiplayer run.
Could you elaborate why? I feel like the build is rather teamplay oriented. Counterspell, Abjuration reaction, all the wizard buffs, soaking opportunity attacks etc. You can even run it with the warding bond rings.
I am asking because i am planning on running the build in a challenge run with some friends.
I think either White Draconic Sorc 1/Wizard X or Warlock 2/Wizard X are better for this. Sorc keeps slot progression and gives con saves. Warlock 2 gives infinite mage armor from invocation, so you can always keep ward at max.
Sorcerer also gives you AC, what you dont want. Concentration is no problem to keep up via other means. The spell progression is only relevant before lvl 12.
Warlock 2 is very good if you want this build playable at lower levels, but basically useless once you reach abjuration 10. Also its an extremely cheesy tactic that some people dont like to use which is why i did not mention it.
Basically your suggestions work well on lower leveled characters, however this specific build kind of only works in the lategame anyway since dumping AC without loads of abjuration stacks is not a great idea.
I don't think the Mage armor works, unless I'm doing something wrong. I tried the Abjuration Wizard x/Warlock 2 build and once I'd cast Armor of Shadows I couldn't cancel it to recast.
This is a good suggestion! Personally I wouldn't need War Caster since I plan to always be Sanctuaried, but that feat will be great if using offensive spells! Mystra's staff truly is a blessing!
Get a haste bot in your party. (2 actions per turn). Run bloodlust elixir. Extra free action after killing a target.
Cold sorcerer with the very rare staff for the frost cantrip and the boots that leave an ice puddle every time you hit with a cold spell. Watch and laugh as all the enemies slip on ice over and over trying to get to you.
Hi guys, coming to the end of a playthrough and want to get a few ideas for my next one.
I've gone for a classic throwzerker this time and found it good fun, it was great how early it became effective. The run before hand was lightning sorc, which ended up great but really took to the late second/third act to turn up.
What kind of builds did you just straight up enjoy? Open to pretty much anything!
I'm doing an Oathbreaker/Goolock playthrough right now. Any reason for the 6/6 split? I was planning on going 9 in Paladin, since as far as I know the extra attacks from Blade Pact and Paladin doesn't stack.
I did 6/6 because it was one of my first playthroughs and breezed through enemies, so i never really changed anything. I belive the extra attacks from deepened pact stacks in every mode except honour mode. I saw a comment saying 7 pal/ 5 warlock or 8 paladin / 4 warlock is more optimal tho.
I really haven't thought about going for necromancer/summons type build. I'll look into it, thanks for the suggestion!
It's fun to really lean into necromancy and have a party of 3 necromancers and a mean paladin
Don’t overlook spore Druid for summons as well!
Came here to type that first one lol. With that arcane acuity hat and the ring from the dinos. Easily the best build in the game in my view.
I briefly respec'd Halsin into a monk as I had a bunch of gear and just wanted to see how good it was. I definitely am going to do Monk at some point.
I did that with Jaheira and once I figured out how BG3 monks worked I was so happy
Bard and Paladin are my favorites. Currently playing 10 Swords/2 Vengeance Durge and he is a beast in battlefield.
For caster classes I like Sorcerer the most. Did a Fire Aquity Dragonic Sorc and it was also very effective. Happened to be my evil Durge too.
Bard, Paladin, and Warlock are huge fun. They’re popular for a reason, just very impactful classes with tons of RP.
I'm a numbers person. Seeing Eldritch Blast crit 3 different targets and eviscerating all 3 with "Cull the Weak" is one of my most hype moments in the game.
We have the same thing going on in my multiplayer run. My buddy just wanted to play dumb barbarian and throw stuff, we’re late act 1 and he’s like “damn this is insane how much damage I’m doing” and it’s then I let him know he stumbled into a meta build basically lol
(Max strength barbarian duh)
TLDR: This game is great, there are a ton of really cool builds that I can't wait to try out, with a bunch of different playstyles, all of which seem incredible. In particular, light cleric/divination wizard, Beast Master Ranger and moon druid with infinite webs, Sword's bard and other hand crossbow multiclasses, eldritch blast sorcerer/warlocks, and tavern brawler barbarians and monks, with potential for many other builds which have not yet being discovered, mainly thanks to the fantastic magic items which are available.
I'm going to give a very brief introduction to 5e optimisation, in particular mid-high and highly optimised parties, then go into how BG3 mechanics have changed the effectiveness of these, and what new things are then likely added.
Part 1 - 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons
In 5th edition, parties with a high level of optimisation can take numerous fights before they have to take long rests, which each fight being multiple times the deadly difficulty.
This leads to a few mandatory things:
This lead to it mostly being dominated by full spellcasters, with control (like wall of force and hypnotic pattern), utility (like phantom steed and simulacrum) and summon spells (like conjure animals). Paladins and Rangers were also viable, in particular, their exceptional party buffs (aura of protection and pass without trace) making the other spellcasters more effective.
Most fullcasters to get the required defence and concentration protection to survive and stay effective would take 1 or 2 level multiclasses, in particular into divine soul sorcerer (for favoured by the gods, shield, silvery barbs, and con save proficiency, a feature that functions similarly to the fighter's indomitable, but each short rest).
Damage was mostly done either through summons (druid got 8 attacks at lv5 through fair and balanced gameplay), or through cantrips, especially eldritch blast comboing with hazards like wall of fire or spike growth. Rangers would use Hand crossbows with sharpshooter, and melee attackers didn't exist, as none of them would have the survivability to last through the even higher damage attacks of melee enemies which ranged character could avoid with control spells.
Now looking at what changed and what stayed the same:
Part 2 - Baldur's Gate 3
There are a few changes which have brought down the level of power of caster builds, and make other things more viable.
So, what does this mean.
Firstly, mostly ranged characters will still have a large advantage over melee characters, none of the largest changes effect this (although many of the smaller ones help like jump). Armour dips will also still be very effective, although less so, as many of the best don't exist. Secondly, control effects will be worse, although still worth having, are no longer going to be quite so dominant. This opens the way for parties that are less centred on drawn out gameplans, and can be more focused on just straight damage, or a mix of both.
Personally, my party is going to be light cleric (+wizard 1), beastmaster ranger (+3 thief or assassin rogue, and maybe battlemaster or eldritch knight fighter), divination wizard (+ 1 level life cleric), storm sorcerer (+2 fiend warlock). Paladin is also a consideration.
Probably next playthough if they don't patch it, im going to try some thrown weapon barbarian, it also looks really fun, and would be in my party for the higher damage if it had more control/utility like ranger.
2 levels in Bard gives the party 3 SR/day instead of 2, which is great synergy with warlocks.
doesn't really matter when you can long rest as often as you want, so a truly optimized party would build around dumping long rest resources into a single fight and then resting to do it again the next fight.
playing this exact build right now lol, bard 6(i wanted aura of vitality so i still wanted magical secrets from lore bard) wizard 2 (div) cleric 1 (life)
Sounds good. I assume this would require the headband or intellect to be effective, as INT has been a dump stat for me. I may change Shadowheart - had her as a tempest cleric but still not quite happy with her contribution.
Also tried Gale as a divination wizard, but ended up going straight evocation. Maybe likewise dip him into light cleric for better armor choices.
So would sorc 11/wizard 1 be a good play?
It's insanely good for your PC as you can be a sorc face blaster with a ton of utility for just exploring the game and filling in for different party members. For stargith nova min/maxing it's probably a bit weaker, idk though.
I'm finding insane value from playing:
Light cleric x/wizard 1 (warding flare has unlimited uses)
BM Ranger 5/spore druid x (spore druid weapon enchant works on ranged attacks, hand xbow and spider are op)
Bard x/ warlock 2-3
And a second eldritch blaster either sorlock+ cleric 1 dip or maybe pal 5/lock 5+2 something. Apparently pact weapon extra attack stacks with normal extra attack so can 3x attack at 10. This build is my "front liner" with heavy armor and only needs Cha+con
Why bard and warlock? Besides the cha as spell ability what does a bard gain from a warlock?
Warding flare has been amazing, unlimited uses makes it very nice.
Spores druid seems pretty cool as what to do after beat master 5.
Between bard and divination wizard it's honestly really close. I just like the 9 per long rest portents.
I'd recommend having your paladin at ranged if they end up as your last character. Giving aura of protection to almost the entire party is incredibly important, and Eldritch blast does perfectly fine damage. You can still use melee, just do it if enemies somehow reach you instead of actively trying to reach enemies.
my light cleric "is" my wizard, i was going to be 1 cleric/wizard x but when i learned about the scroll nonsense i respeced and just used headband of int.
I like the bard because of skill checks. Expertise in SOH for pickpocketing shopkeeps has me with infinite gold
Presumably I can't get the boon then?
Still intelligence. With warped headband of int from the ogres in the blighted village you will have 17 int and can prepare 4 wizard spells.
Pretty strong for a 1 level dip
I managed to do nail and soul bindings with these builds, and have ideas for the other two. Any improvement suggestions?
thorns of agony is a really bad charm. Being able to move during invincibility frames when you get hit is super useful. Hiveblood and soul catcher also aren’t good charms for Pantheons. I would recommend fragile/unbreakable heart for shell binding, but otherwise not really change your charm build.
Something like strength, shaman, Mark of pride, spell twister (or quickslash for one of those) works fine. Maybe swap spell twister for soul binding.
I did consider swapping thorns out for something else. I will keep that in mind.
Logic behind hiveblood was to heal without requiring soul so that I could use the soul for other purposes, or heal post-hiveblood to effectively squeeze 2 heals out of one focus. I can fairly recently avoid damage in pantheon 1 bosses except Gorb(cuz screw the invis glitch) so I managed well with it. Dunno about other pantheons.
I was doubtful about whether fragile heart would work with shell binding. It does? Wow, that's useful.
I like deep focus for the soul binding so that you can be more efficient with your one heal :) . Why grubsong if you get fully charged with 1-2 hits?
Hiveblood actually isn't that bad. It was really useful when I was first going for the pantheon completions, even up to p5
Why are spell charms in the nail section?
Edit: Didn’t understand what the post meant at first.
Nail binding. Low nail damage. So I am going spell build to circumvent it.
Ignore Fragile Greed, meant to put strength.
That would overcharm you tho, unless you switch Mop with longnail.
Thorns sucks. Its a single nail swing of damage it does and it locks you in place where you probably dont wanna be
fragile greed in the shell build 😭
Oh sht- put on the wrong charm.
Yeah, he probably does the same as me, nail charms on nail binding so the nail stops being trash
