What Redditors are Saying

Best Action-Adventure Video Games

TL;DR Top recommendations include Uncharted series, Tomb Raider series, Assassin's Creed, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Ghost of Tsushima.

Uncharted Series

The Uncharted series is frequently recommended as a top action-adventure game, particularly for PlayStation users. It's praised for its engaging storylines, cinematic experience, and adventurous gameplay [1:1][2:2][4:1]. The series offers a mix of exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat, making it a staple in the genre.

Tomb Raider Series

The Tomb Raider series, especially the 2013 reboot, is another popular choice. It offers a compelling narrative with strong character development and challenging puzzles [1:3][4:1]. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is noted for its difficult puzzles and immersive environment [1:4].

Assassin's Creed Series

Assassin's Creed games are well-loved for their historical settings and stealth-based gameplay. Black Flag is particularly recommended for its pirate theme, although newcomers might find the overarching Abstergo storyline confusing [1:2]. The Ezio Collection and Odyssey are highlighted as favorites within the series [3].

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn stands out for its stunning graphics, open world, and captivating story [2:1][3:9]. Players appreciate the game's innovative combat mechanics and the opportunity to explore a richly detailed post-apocalyptic world.

Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima is acclaimed for its beautiful visuals, engaging combat system, and compelling narrative [3:4][3:9]. Set in feudal Japan, the game allows players to experience samurai culture while exploring an expansive open world.

Other Notable Mentions

Several other games were mentioned across discussions, including God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, Sekiro, and Monster Hunter World [2:2][3:5][5:2]. Each of these games brings unique elements to the action-adventure genre, from intense combat to deep storytelling.

Assassin's Creed can be fun if you are also ok with being stealthy for a good chunk of the game. My recommendation would be Black Flag, though you might get a little confused with the Abstergo story because it has been built up over the other games

Tomb Raider (2013). It's a great story, and the tutorial/prologue does an exceptional job at easing you into the gameplay dynamics while keeping it fun.

I enjoyed tomb raider even though it doesn't follow much around the previous titles gameplay-wise. My favorite is shadow of tomb raider because it has some difficult puzzles. Uncharted I haven't tried yet but I think it'll be good as tomb raider.

The Witcher 3 or Skyrim

Def. Uncharted if you have a PS4. They have a collection of the first three games, but the fourth is sold separately because it's newer.

Jedi: Fallen Order is a good game in its own right, and not exclusive to PS4. Combat can be a little tricky, so I'd recommend playing on Easy if you're new to gaming.

Best Action Adventure Games?

Some games like Tomb raider, Uncharted, Assassins Creed(any)... I was trying to get my head around rpgs but i just can not play them, they kinda feel boring after i play something like uncharted, so just drop down any action adventure game you remember, on ps, xbox or pc.

Looking for Engaging Open World and Action/Adventure Games

Posted by adebimpe12 · in r/gamingsuggestions · 3 years ago

Looking to sink my time into some games for Ps4 (possibly pc as well). I value gameplay a lot more than story most of the time, however, I appreciate a good story I can sink into. I like a bit of a challenge, as I have completed most of these games on here at the highest or second highest difficulty. Here are a couple games I'm a fan of so you can understand my taste.

All-time Favorites

- Skyrim (playing right now)

- Assassins Creed series (Ezio Collection & Odyessy are my favorites)

- Persona 5

- Spider Man

- Uncharted series

-Star Wars Fallen Order

-GTA V

Favorites (gameplay only, subpar story)

- Hitman 2*

- Fallout 4 *

- Rise of the Tomb Raider*

*I have not played any other games in these game's series

the outer worlds have great story, kindda good combat not the highlight, i am not a guy who has ever once played such game and it was great.
play halo...
in engaging works of art there is fc 3 n 4 play one, forget the rest fc games, these are the ones with great enviournment and a world of people, fc 3 ur the highlight but if u were liking the villain from it go play FC 4 everything same just better but u have no personality as a character.
In survival also recommend grounded but it isnt on ps4 but has great survival elements and stuff add in ark survival evolved and minecraft as one of the best games for survival ark is very hardcore ppls and dont go thinking it is the dark souls of survival, play if u r a serious non casual gamer.

there are basically all the open world games I have played and am giving you my personal experices of it, i also prefer gameplay over story but the outer wilds in on a whole another level if u ask me in terms of story.

and i have only finished FC 4 & 3 among these games as their combat was the greatest in my opinion as well as their story, i like fc4's more tho.

by fc you mean farcry correct? if so, i was looking into buying 6 (i’m a big breaking bad fan lol). but i played a bit of 4 when i was younger and i had a good time with it. i’ll also have to look into the outer worlds cause the game looks pretty cool.

If you haven't tried Fallout 4 on survival mode, it can definitely be an amazing way to do a partial 2nd playthrough, though eventually you do seem to reach a point where you can overcome all of its challenges except only saving at beds, which makes it a bit more tedious so not quite right for a full 2nd playthrough. Getting there though is brutal and amazing, and will make you appreciate every scrap of ammo and food and water and inch of ground that you learn to cover between your beds.

Hi all! I’ve been trying to find an action/adventure game with a nice storyline to it for a bit, and I was wondering if anyone had played any that they really enjoyed that they wouldn’t mind recommending. So far I’ve played:

  • The Tomb Raider franchise

  • The Uncharted franchise

  • God of War (2018)

  • NieR: Automata

  • Spider-Man & Miles Morales

  • The Last of Us 1 & 2

  • Assassins Creed: Odyssey, and Syndicate

  • Detroit: Become Human

  • Jedi: Fallen Order

  • Star Wars Battlefront 2

Thanks for any suggestions!

Looking for a VERY specific kind of action-adventure game!

Posted by NewMGFantasyWriter · in r/gamingsuggestions · 1 month ago

I wish I wasn't as picky as I was with games I wanna play, but here we are.

Ok, I'd like any suggestions for an action-adventure game that fit most of if not all the criteria:

  1. Not mandatory, but I LARGELY prefer a coming-of-age story with a young protagonist
  2. It's NOT a sidescroller
  3. Combat is NOT turn-based, demanding good reflexes
  4. It has melee combat AND skills/abilities you can upgrade
  5. It has actual characters you play as whose journeys you get invested in, not avatars you customize
  6. Not mandatory, but I prefer a fantasy setting
  7. CUTSCENES! Important, story-advancing cutscenes!

Here are some games that fit at least some of the criteria but I don't want suggested because I have played, am playing, or declined to play them:

  1. Ni No Kuni (absolute PEAK! LOVE Oliver's story! Favorite video game of all time!) and Ni No Kuni 2
  2. Genshin Impact
  3. Dante's Inferno
  4. Force Unleashed and the Jedi games
  5. Diablo
  6. Ninja Gaiden
  7. Immortals Fenyx Rising
  8. Arkham games
  9. Trials of Mana
  10. God of War
  11. Spider-Man games
  12. Breath of the Wild games

You mentioned Breath of the Wild, but have you played the earlier Zelda games? I recommend Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker.

Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2 - It's a action-adventure / 3D platformer. It's about a young boy who goes to summer camp for people with psychic powers, and it has a good coming-of-age story.

The World Ends With You - It's an action RPG with a young protagonist and an urban fantasy setting.

Bully - It's an action-adventure game about a kid who gets sent to a boarding school. It's not a fantasy setting, but I think it fits all of the other criteria.

Ys VIII - It's a fantasy action RPG about a group of people who get stranded on an island. It's not really a coming-of-age story for the protagonist, but one of the other characters is a child, so there's a little bit of coming-of-age. Other than that, I think it fits all of the other criteria.

Dead cells has better combat and movement, and I like the little bits of exploration there is.

But Hades still wins overall for me, it's just more engaging. Better story, music, art and aesthetic and stuff like that. Combat and movement here are still excellent, just not quite the dead cells fluidity.

Both are absolutely worth playing.

Looking for an action-adventure and/or action RPG with great stories

Posted by Various-Ranger5728 · in r/gamingsuggestions · 3 months ago

A while back, I just finished Ghost of Tsushima. Best narrative I’ve experienced imo. The combat was extremely satisfying. Perhaps the best game combat I’ve done. The same was with Batman: Arkham Knight. The free flow combat style was just amazing, along with the story.

My favorite RPG is the final fantasy 7 remake. It had a perfect story and soundtrack that hit in all the right places. Cyberpunk 2077 is also one of my favorites. The cyber ware upgrading was spot-on and choosing your weapons was really fun as well.

So yeah basically I’m looking for just fun combat, good story with preferably a nice soundtrack (not required). I play on ps5 btw. Thank you!!

Edit: a game that’s immersive with a good atmosphere would be great too!

Red Dead Redemption of course is the standard answer here. Maybe it's just because I play a lot of gta which has awful combat but I like the guns in Red Dead and horse combat a lot

GTA has bad combat imo but great music, story, hilarious vibe

I didnt like The Witcher 3s combat but lots of people do and love the story. It does have great atmosphere which is why I included it even if its not my cup of tea

I just started Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and its more jrpg but the combat has action based elements like dodging and parrying. Vibe is off the charts, story and music too

Fallout 4 has good combat a decent story and I love the old timey soundtrack

Coming out who knows when but on my wishlist, not sure if or when they'll be on playstation but The Expanse and Clockwork Revolution are two I'm keeping an eye on
