Batman Arkham Series
The Batman Arkham series is widely regarded as one of the best superhero video game franchises. Many commenters praised its storytelling, gameplay mechanics, and impact on the genre [2:1]
[4:2]. The free-flowing combat system introduced in these games has been emulated by many others since
[4:5]. Arkham Asylum was particularly noted for changing perceptions about superhero games, moving them away from simple movie tie-ins to serious storytelling experiences
[4:2].
Spider-Man Games
Insomniac's Spider-Man games, especially the 2018 release for PS4, are celebrated for their engaging gameplay and faithful representation of the character [2:1]
[5:1]. These games have been compared favorably to the Arkham series, with similar combat techniques but a unique feel that captures the essence of Spider-Man
[2:1]. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions was also mentioned as an enjoyable title that predated the Spider-Verse concept
[2:4].
Marvel vs Capcom Series
The Marvel vs Capcom series, particularly Marvel vs Capcom 2, is another favorite among fans. While not strictly superhero-focused, it features a roster of Marvel characters in a fighting game format [2:5]. Some players have a love-hate relationship with the series due to its complex gameplay mechanics
[2:6].
Infamous Series
The Infamous series offers a different take on superhero games, focusing on original characters with superpowers. It was highlighted as a standout choice alongside Prototype, which shares a similar theme [4:8].
Guardians of the Galaxy
The Guardians of the Galaxy video game was praised for its storytelling, which some players found more compelling than the movie sequels [4:1]. While not universally acclaimed for its gameplay, the narrative and character development were appreciated
[4:11].
Other Notable Mentions
Several other games were suggested across discussions, including Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Injustice series, and Saints Row IV [3:2]
[3:6]. These games offer varied experiences, from team-based action to fighting game formats, catering to different tastes within the superhero genre.
I remember justice league heroes being pretty good but that's going back along time
There's not too many options is there?
I'm not saying them as a Justice League, rather best option for each character
That's what they're answering. They're saying the LEGO games for each of them
Injustice actually does a good job with the version of the characters from the good universe. This works in the first game to juxtapose the evil versions. So as much slack as Injustice gets, Superman and WW did get good adaptations for the first game, just not the ones everyone thinks of when you name drop Injustice
People forget that it's the real, mainline Justice League that take down the Injustice versions. They're all pretty heroic.
Is that in the latest injustice books?
I meant the original game
Most of them are the Lego ones.
Obviously, there are a lot of great superhero games and I can only have 6 poll options. So I will include 5 and the 6th option will be an “Other” option for those whose favorite isn’t listed.
Probably all of the Arkham games...that was one of the best times I've had with a video game in recent memory
I'd like to try Spider-Man, but I've never owned a PS4
Yeah growing up my favorite superhero game was Ultimate Alliance and Marvel Nemesis: Rise of The Imperfects. But then I played Arkham Asylum years later and that triumphed over everything previous superhero game I’ve ever played. And Arkham City after that. So yeah I also love those games. Marvel’s Spider-Man is incredible and although it featured a lot of similar gameplay and combat techniques and features from the Arkham games, they did such a nice job with it and making it truly feel like a Spider-Man game. As a die hard Spider-Man fan, I’d say Spider-Man for the PS4 is my favorite. But Arkham City is a close second
The original Arkham Asylum, probably.
Spider-man (PSOne) was a childhood favourite.
I got a soft spot for Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, it was the spider-verse before spider-verse
Marvel vs Capcom 2
I have a real love hate relationship with MvC2 and MvC3. On one hand I play a lot of fighting games and have been pretty involved with my local scene and it's a great time playing it. On the other hand those games have some of the most degenerate set play and infinites.
Sometimes I just wanna play footsies and not be blocking like 4 different directions in the span of a few seconds y'know.
Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
If they remade that game today using Unreal 5, that would really be something.
Just any type of superhero games I’ll take any suggestions
Thanks!
Spider-Man is probably the best one.
Not "really" a superhero game but Prototype is good.
It is a superhero game.
I would settle for "anti-hero" at absolute best.
Any of the Batman Arkham games are great
Thank you, I’ll check them out!
Saints Row IV
I miss the creativity of the good old days of Freedom Force.
I think it has to be Arkham Asylum, for it’s impact on the sub genre. Before that, I don’t think superhero games were taken that seriously. Most were movie tie ins, or fun titles (shout out to Spider-Man on the PS1). But Asylum is really when people started to recognize the storytelling potential.
Yup, fair, by the end the gameplay feels like it has been stretched as long as it can be. The story is the thing driving GotG forward. (My real answer is that I probably would have said the Arkham games in terms of fun gameplay and good story, with the rare exception of the stupid late game tank battle BS in Arkham Knight).
On the other hand, alot of the open world superhero games fall flat for me past their main story modes. Sure the 2018 Spider-man game had alot of "things" to do on top of the story, but alot of this was in side content like looking for backpacks, the stupid research stations, or whatever next set of icons that popped up. Most of this felt like busy work to me by the fifth time you did the same task/time trial over and over again. Some people like having that (the Arkham games have alot of that as well of course), it's just not my cup of tea.
Batman Arkham series
So many games have tried to copy the free flowing combat since
Batman is not a superhero.
Is Iron Man a superhero? Is Ant-Man a superhero? Is Captain America a superhero?
Wat lol. Batman is THE superhero cause dude is a regular human out there holding his own with people with superpowers. Batman is not super-powered, but he is a superhero.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman
https://batman.fandom.com/wiki/Batman
”batman is a superhero”
He is commonly considered a superhero, despite the fact that he has no superhuman abilities. Same as Ironman.
Infamous, hands down. Prototype is a close second.
Just to throw out something different and controversial (totally agree with Arkham Asylum & recent Spider-man games though), I thought the Guardians of the Galaxy video game was pretty great. I enjoyed the story way more than either the second or third movies as well.
Upvoted. Not sure it is the best gameplay out there, but the story was wrll done. One of those really pleasant surprises. The writers really captured the feel if the characters.
Plus it looked brilliant with decent voice cast.
The first Amazing Spider-Man game.
The newer Batman series
The batman arkham series
Spiderman 2 for the ps2
That would be a Tobey Maguire Spider-Man game.
2018 Spider-Man on ps4 was the best!
i'd pick Arkham Knight
Came here to say this. I understand it had issues when it got ported to PC but I just played it last year and thought it was one of the most polished games ive ever played. Also, fuck the haters, the batmobile was cool as hell and provided awesome breaks from just gliding and punching your way through the whole game.
The first time I jumped into the batmobile, I had such a big smile on my face. One of my favorite moments in a game. Absolutely epic.
The main flaw for me is all the boss battles are Batmobile tank battles, if they had done half and half I think it would have landed way better
Knight was the best imo. Asylum was amazing for its time, but I feel Rocksteady kept building on everything great about the previous games. I know the tank sextons aren’t everyone’s jam, but I learned to enjoy them. How often do you get to stealth up and blow up a tank while in a smaller tank?
I’d love to see some super hero games that weren’t in the vein of MCU or Batman
There were never really much superhero games that isn't DC or MCU. It always either Spiderman or Batman. Only ones that stood out were Infamous and Prototype.
I think the Arkham games suffered a bit as they went, but I cannot deny how stellar Knight looks as old as it is.
Batman is good and all, but Spiderman is literally my favorite character in all of media
something about spidey is just so cool
Probably Arkham asylum. I didn’t really like the open world aspect of Arkham city, I never replayed it for that reason but I played the first one many times
Hard Agree. I didnt like the open world aspects or Arkham City and Arkham knight.
Asylum just felt like it worked better with the contained story and metroidvania elements.
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. First console game I ever played, and introduced me to a lot of characters who are still favorites of mine. Daredevil, Deadpool, Moon Knight, Nightcrawler, Ghost Rider, Hawkeye, Dr. Doom, and that’s just who’s playable.
Ultimate Alliance was what got me in on the connected lore, with the multi-choice trivia on the computer at the base in every chapter that rewarded EXP for getting it right. It was my favorite part of starting a new chapter, when I could just head to the trivia machine and learn new things about Marvel's history that I didn't know previously.
That and the solo missions you unlocked that showed crucial moments in a character's history and sort of re-enacted it. It all had so much effort in it, loved that game.
Infamous 1 and 2(second son was also pretty good).
Batman Arkham Asylum.
The Incredible Hulk:Ultimate Destruction
This is the correct answer. I ran up a building to jump off anf grapple a helicopter to kick it into another helicopter
That game was just such good fun
I wish I could double like
Spider-Man PS4
A lot of people on this sub don't seem to have actually played (or at least talk about) any other superhero games apart from the recent Spider-Man titles and maybe the Arkham franchise.
So, what other great superhero titles are out there? Can be from any generation of gaming!
Infamous
Prototype
Hulk Ultimate Destruction
X-Men Origins Wolverine
Battletoads
You're a person of culture for picking Battletoads!
Prototype was so good as well. We need a darker superhero game back on the market. I just feel like that leaked Venom game isn't going to be 18-rated due to being connected to the Spider-Man titles. Here's hoping Blade delivers though
I forgot about Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.
That was awesome, especially being able to destroy buildings!
Scrolled too far to find Ultimate Destruction
Ultimate Spider-man is great too
Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.
I still load up my old ps2 to play this from time to time. It’s perfect all killer no filler. Satisfying upgrades, fun consistent physics, open world with easter eggs. Please someone port this to switch.
It probably doesn't technically count, but the InFamous series.
For sure counts. I guess they're more vigilantes/villains games. Second Son and First Light are incredible. The first two are also good but they are a little dated.
I believe it counts. even though its original not based on Marvel or DC comics, still a superhero game.
Yeah, it definitely counts! My personal pick would be Prototype, which isn't a Marvel or DC property either. I'm hoping Activision revive that IP one day
Ultimate Alliance series was great stuff 👏
Yup! Ultimate Alliance 2 is one of my favourite games on PS2.
I’m not even a Marvel fan and this game was one of my favorite single player games of the generation. Fantastic game from top to bottom. I want a sequel.
I am curious and want to discuss the video games based on comics that people love.
Personally I love Arkham Asylum, City and Origins. I don't love Arkham Knight as much as the first three.
I am currently playing through Guardians of the Galaxy and enjoying the humor.
Midnight Suns has been fun so far, but I am not sure if it will remain up there.
A few favorites of mine from the past? X-Men Legends 1 and 2
Ultimate Alliance
Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions
Rogue Trooper
Ultimate Spider-Man
Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction.
What are some of your favorites? Do they go back further? I don't get into the comic book games on the NES SNED or Genesis and I know I haven't talked about Marvel vs Capcom.
Been revisiting marvel ultimate alliance and it's pretty fun. I'm surprised at how much marvel lore they were able to add. A little peeved they have portraits for playable characters not available in my version for the loading screens though. God damn moon knight!
I liked the system in the first game where certain characters would have special interactions with NPCs, Like Deadpool/Weasel, Spider-Man/Mysterio, etc.
Insomniac Spider-Man and Batman Arkham are I think the quintessential comic book video games.
Comix Zone, while hard as balls, is a complete love letter to comics in the form of a beat ‘em up/platformer.
X-Men Legends 1-2
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1-3
the Sonyverse Spider-Man games
The Square-Enix Avengers game had really good single player imo. Sure it was a failure on a lot of levels but I think the single-player gets overlooked at how good it was because of that.
X2: Wolverine’s Revenge… I may be the only person who loves this game. I still play it from time to time and while it’s not perfect, I like it a lot.
X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse on SNES. I hate the end of the game’s story but the journey is really good.
X-Men 2: Clone Wars on Genesis is another one I like a lot regardless of how hard it is.
I dunno if it counts but Batman (1989) had 3 different games on NES, Genesis, and Game Boy that were all very different and all good in their own right.
X-Men Mutant Academy and MA2 on PS1 are excellent fighting games. It makes me sad Next Dimension killed the franchise.
Add xmen origins wolverine.
Comix Zone!
Insomniac's Spider-Man 1 & 2/MM
The darkness
Mike Patton voicing the Darkness is so good
I never got to play it. I still have my xbox 360 so I might pick it up.
such an amazing game, i first played this on a gaming center on xbox 360, then bought it for pc, then lost the cd when i was shifting houses. Then I found out that this game was sadly delisted from all platforms around 2014. Later on got to find out about r/spidermanwebofshadows in late 2022, downloaded it again (its not piracy if there's no legal way to get the game) and memories flooded again. Black cat was hot then and hot now too 😍😍
I do have some criticisms of the game now but it's still a blast and imo it was the best spiderman game till Insomniac raised the bar with Spiderman PS4. Still some aspects/features of this game are unmatched and not seen even in the latest Insomniac releases like wall combat, ally system, choosing hero/villain path based on your suit alignment etc. This game had 4 endings (hero, anti hero, villain, anti villain)
obviously later came the arkham games which i loved (origins is the best according to me)
I also played Ben 10 flash games a lot on cartoonetwork.com in the late 2000s/early 2010s, remember Battle Ready, Savage Pursuit? There were even Generator Rex games too, underrated series which would've done well if it was released today.
The Air and Wall combat in Web of Shadows is still unmatched! Underrated game at the time though a lot of its flaws may have gotten much worse with age.
Also shoutout to Shattered Dimensions, that game did the whole Spider-verse thing way before the movie and did it really well. Nolan North's Deadpool first appeared in that game and I firmly believe that it was a crucial step towards the 2014 Deadpool game. Also Neil Patrick Harris as Spider-Man!
I haven't played this one, but spiderman 2. I loved that one, like defeating Rhino by jumping over his charges and loved the Mysterio world in it as well
Bro play Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions
batman followed by spidey
dead pool is super underrated and i would gatekeep it
have not played Deadpool and wolverine. the best series imo is the batman trilogy
