TL;DR
Pontiac Grand Prix
The Pontiac Grand Prix, particularly models equipped with the 3800 V6 engine, is often highlighted as one of the best affordable options. This engine is known for its reliability and longevity, with some users noting that it "will outlast our sun itself" [1:3]. The Grand Prix is praised for being a solid choice in terms of durability, especially in regions like the rust belt where road conditions can be harsh
[1:2].
Pontiac G6
The Pontiac G6, particularly from the mid-2000s, is another model that receives positive feedback. Owners appreciate its maintenance-friendly engine and overall performance. One user mentioned their G6 still performs well at 163K miles [5:1]. However, potential buyers should be aware of issues such as oil leaks into the exhaust and potential repair costs for models with retractable tops
[5:5]
[5:6].
Pontiac Vibe
The Pontiac Vibe is noted for its reliability and practicality as a daily driver. It shares many components with the Toyota Matrix, which contributes to its reputation for durability. A user reported driving over 314,000 miles without major issues, making it a great option for those seeking an affordable and reliable vehicle [2:5].
Considerations for Older Models
While older Pontiac models like the Fiero and Sunbird have their enthusiasts, they are generally not recommended as reliable daily drivers due to their age and potential need for frequent repairs [3:6]. If you are considering these models, be prepared for possible mechanical work and higher maintenance costs.
General Advice
When purchasing any older Pontiac vehicle, it's crucial to consider the condition of the car, its maintenance history, and any potential repair costs. Being a DIY enthusiast or having access to affordable mechanics can significantly reduce ownership costs. Additionally, keep in mind that even the newest Pontiacs are now over 15 years old, so expect some wear and tear [3:2].
The Pontiac. Preferably a Buick with the 3800 (personal preference), but the Pontiac is just as good.
Grand prix has the second gen 3800 series v6. That motor will outlast our sun itself. Easy choice.
Grand Prix. But i'd save up some more and guy a much nicer vehicle for 3K
No point having a nice vehicle in the rust belt, the road salt will just eat it
So you would condemn yourself to driving crappy vehicles for the rest of your life just because you live in the Midwest? All cars will die eventually, might as well drive something you enjoy
the Pontiac, yeah the car will fall apart around the 3.8 but it will run forever
Transmission included
Is the chicken included? Kind of a wash, if it is.
neither? lmao
The best is the 1967 LeMans why ? Because thats what i drive in the summer oh and the best color ? Red of course
I disagree. The 1967 GTO is best. Why? Because that's what I've got. Signet gold beats red.
'64-'67 best years for Tempest/LeMans/GTO!
" the best color ? Red of course"
WRONG!
"Iris Mist!"
The Fiero is both the best and the worst
My brother bought a new 88 Formula with the 5 speed manual, ws6 suspension all that. White with a Tan interior. It was a fun car. He drove it until it started to fall apart. Dunno how many miles that thing had on it.
I agree - the 2m4 was horrible - the last two years of the GT were great!!!!
By best, I assume you have to mean power/fun/cool or reliability.
GM Iron Duke or 3800 are going to be reliable, with the exception of the fieros IMO. Late model v8s are pretty reliable and have good aftermarket still.
Cool is very subjective. 2nd gen firebirds (trans am and formula) are gonna be my top. I have a soft spot for the older GTOs and other 60s era BOP cars.
I have a soft spot for the 66 GTO as I own one, but the second generation Firebirds are iconic.
Although if you’re looking at a car which reliably ran forever and a frigging day, the 2001 Grand Prix my wife had was the master of it just kept running. It was right before COVID we ended up finally selling that thing. It just ran all the time. Never an issue ever
Yep. My 09 Pontiyoda Vibe has over 314,000 miles and shows no sign of giving up anytime soon. Burns oil but that’s normal. I drive 160 miles a day too and from work. Definitely got my moneys worth!
Next car I get is gonna be a solitary winter driver. I wanna find an AWD Vibe for this, put some winter tires on it and call it good.
Late model 4th gen ws6 trans am looks the best imo
hey! getting a well paying job soon and am itching to buy my first car on my own. the only two in the budget i wanna stay in (7k or less) are a pontiac fiero and a pontiac sunbird (i’d rather get the fiero tho cause it’s the look and color i want). both are beautiful cars and seem to be in good condition—that is if they don’t sell before i have enough.
are they reliable? are they safe? are they a pain in the ass to repair? they’re my dream cars and i’m totally fine putting some money into it but i’d rather not pay more than i’m putting into it in the first year.
also, would love y’all’s opinions on other cars that fit that look and price range. i’m a sucker for coupes that look like the celica supra mk2.
Keep in mind, even the newest Pontiac is now 15 years old. For a daily driver, you better be a good DIYer. Your mileage will vary.
I’ll agree with anyone saying anything with a 3800 is reliable. I bought mine in ‘16 with 203k (after selling my 04 GP with 175k). It’s currently about to hit 284k. Other than maintenance I haven’t really had to do anything, nothing catastrophic anyway, basically just wear parts and some sensors going bad after 15+ years and over 200k miles. For a while I was driving around 100+ miles a day last summer/fall. The only real issue I have is that I have a coolant leak that I gave up on finding years ago so I have to top it off every now and then 🤷♂️
Edit: If the sunbird has the 3.1 then they’re pretty reliable, but the newest one of those is 30 years old at this point, I wouldn’t grab it for a daily. Fieros are fun but same thing, they’re even older and had more issues. Either as a project though, sure
Gen II 3800 engines are very reliable. So look for one with that motor.
Firebird
Grand Prix
Bonneville
The fiero was a car I loved in high school. Had a couple friends with them and realized they spent more time working on them than driving them. I went with a Grand Prix instead. If you want to be a car person, and work on the car you buy, the fiero might fit the bill. But reliable is not the word I’d use for it. It’s possible to modify them enough to be a cool car, but stock ain’t it. I can’t speak to the sunbird.
What year Grand Prix?
if going Grand Prix...steer clear of the 97-98...they were the ones with more problems than the 99-02's
if choosing between fiero and sunfire...I'd go with the fiero and save up a little over time to get a 3800 series II supercharged motor for it...it really wakes them up...bone stock 3800 supercharged motor in those usually gives you a 12sec 1/4mi car....then again I'm a gearhead who likes to make everything I have faster.
Before my current Lexus, my previous 2 cars were a 2008 honda accord V6 and a 2004 pontiac GTO. In 3 years, before my wife crashed it, I had to make repairs on the GTO probably at least 3 times a year. On the Accord, which I drove for 5 years, the only thing that ever broke was the key, had to get a new one programmed when it physically broke, they said I shouldn't have so many other keys hanging from my keyring. But I wish I had the GTO back, it was fun to drive. If you are a decent mechanic pontiacs are as easy and cheap to repair as anything else.
mine, because i can drive it whenever i want
GTO Hands down IMO tho.
Trans AM
And Super Duty 455
My preference is maybe 1973 SD
Super duty tempest wagon!
3rd one hands down - GTO Judge!
I've been looking to buy my first car for a while now and I came across a 2007 Pontiac G6 GT Hardtop Convertible with ~85k on it for $2.8k. The only caveat is that the rear bumper needs to be replaced, the car still has a clean title though.
Thoughts? Hows their reliability?

Thanks in advance!
I bought a 2008 Pontiac G6 specifically because its engine build is one of the best ever made for maintenance. I love this car. At 163K miles it still does 60 in 5.5 seconds. Would highly recommend this era of G6. Super sad GM stopped making them.
No kidding. I got a Pontiac G5 2007 when I got it it had completely no oil in it. I drove it to the shop. We put oil in it and to this day the car is running perfectly fine. I bought it for about $1,600. It only had 130k km and for maintenance I have only spent about $2. 00 to about $800 on parts. They are cheap. They are reliable what I like to say about it. It is a perfect starter car for anyone. It's not too fast. It's not too slow. If you need to hit the gas you will know
It's mid 2000s GM. The drivetrains are fine, interiors are cheap... They're not terrible but they're not great, either.
I'm 6'3", driving a 2008 Yaris. Interior is cheap and its small AF
Its got a retractable top right? Its the Pontiac that was supposed to steal sales from BMW? You're looking at thousands when that top gets stuck half way up
Tbf, what no ln luxury brand didn’t have a cheap plastic interior in the mid 2000’s
I have a 2008 g6 and the main issues with those cars is oil leaks into the exhaust, it’s a common problem with those cars. Other then that I love my car
Be careful about potential repair costs for the hardtop convertible mechanism.
I have the exact same car!! I really like it personally :) Though I might just be biased cause I'm attached to it. Personally, I think it's pretty durable. I've gotten into a few accidents (only 1 was my fault, I promise), and I've only ever needed the fender replaced (btw I took the last black fender in the US, apparently. So sorry about that one) and the rest, I've barely got any scuff marks (can't say the same about the others). My mom even backed up into my car, and it was her's the got the damage 😅
The only issue I've had was a coolant leak. I will say I have 0 car knowledge. it's my friends who do the inspections and oil changes, lol. So idk, take this info with a grain of salt.
Edit: I realized this is 5ys old LOL! If you bought it I hope it's going well for you!! 😊
I’m a Chevy guy and though I don’t take this brand loyalty seriously at all, I’m considering buying another GM product for a daily. My current daily is a 2003 Buick Century with 130k on it. I have a ‘99 Corvette that I bought months ago, but it’s a project/race car I’ll drive during the Summer at this point. It either has 50k on the engine or 200k (don’t ask).
Basically, I’m probably going to want a new daily driver in a year or two and am looking at GM products as they seem like the best bang for your buck. Obviously there are a lot of shitty unreliable ones like the Cruze and many of the SUVs. I’m wondering if there are some diamonds in the rough that might please me like my Buick, but not be as ugly.
I’d like a sedan or SUV, but the idea of having a truck wouldn’t be bad either. The only thing is that those Silverado’s get like 13-15 mpg.
Pontiac G8? It's a Holden commodore wearing Pontiac clothes Chevy Cobalt SS, very fast and tunery
There really aren't many exciting GM sedans, and their SUVs are hit or miss.
I see you've joined the cult of early 2000's Buick. I've yet to find anything that matched my century in comfort, reliability, highway mpg, and completely cheap in all the right ways
I really like the Pontiac G8. The base comes in at a good price too.
Yeah, I really like my Century. It’s only left me stranded once when the battery died, and it jump started right back up. I never have back pain or any issues during long road trips either because the seats are so comfortable. It’s cheap enough I’m not afraid of scratches or anything and working on it is cheap too. I just know that after a couple more years of heavy driving, it’ll be about time for a newer vehicle.
I'm in the same boat, my century is getting ready to burn out the transmission, so I'm babying it and hoping itll last until I can save up for an Elantra N, which has captured my heart lol
Outside of the trucks and body on frame suvs, most GM products suck. The Buick 3800 motor were good, they were in a handful of other cars but the only ones that were actually nice were the Buicks. They used the motor in some Impalas (otherwise awful cars) and some Pontiacs (again awful cars).
The Cavalier was reasonably reliable and dirt cheap to fix, but they were otherwise awful little boxes. Same thing with all the other reasonably reliable GM cars like the Saturn's.
The only other decent cars are the GM muscle cars like the corvette, camaro, Pontiac G8 (with the V8 option) and the Chevrolet SS from around 2017 but you won't find that anywhere near $15k.
Id recommend looking into other brands for a car or car based crossover, GM is good for trucks...usually.
> What is the most reliable GM vehicle under $15k that isn’t a granny car?
Spark EV. It's like a golf cart where the batteries never die. It will run forever, just not far with only 80 miles of range.
Please don't do it. I was a GM guy for most of my life, but they're just crap now. Have been for the past 15ish years or so. And I work on all my own cars, so it's not just a perception I picked up from other talking heads. Do yourself a favor, buy something Japanese.
I’m a VW tragic and I wouldn’t buy a GM vehicle without an LS motor due to reliability issues.
I am a Ford tragic, can’t help it. I feel like there is so many of us with Stockholm Syndrome…in a Mazda now, and it’s amazing not having a transmission that is a ticking time bomb, a turbo motor that could puke its guts out at any moment, the most horrendous plastic you’ve ever seen this side of Play-Skool, or just the most hateful dealer network imaginable.
Oh I know. I worked at a Ford dealer in the service department. The warranty procedure is a joke, they don't want to pay for anything.
How about Korean?
The answer is a Silverado with AFM disabled.
AFM - Active Fuel Management.
I found a wrench before, didn't know I could use it as a steering wheel.. I wonder if I still have it.
Do not buy used cars from buy here pay here lots, or new car dealers. They are marked up obscenely.
Short answer; Toyota something.
Longer answer; A gently used Toyota Prius from a private seller, ideally an old person who won't be driving anymore or someone that bought a newer Prius. I hate them, but they're reliable to a fault. I would say a Toyota Corolla or Camry as an alternative, but they get neglected a lot because of Toyota's reputation for reliability.
I would avoid anything from GM that doesn't have a LS motor in it, but they're gonna suck gas like it's a job. Honda has been riding their laurels for decades, and somehow swept 15 years of V6 transmissions getting bricked under the rug.
I wouldn't even look a Ford newer than 2005, but that's gonna be work. It's also my opinion. I know plenty of people content with their Fusion.
Used Kias and Hyundai are playing roulette, and the odds are not in your favor. Chrysler has been moving from one crisis to another for decades, and the last decent car they made was the Town n Country.
Volkswagen, despite the scandals; makes mechanically sound cars. They are a pain in the ass to work on though.
Subaru is a crap shoot because the old 2.5L motors they made had bad gaskets for a year or two, and that became what people thought about them; disposable all wheel drive time bombs. Being treated like a rental car by both fuckboi wannabe rally drivers, and people using them as "between cars" makes them possibly unreliable. I had a great experience in my Impreza, but I've also heard horror stories.
Nissan.... well have a look at r/bigaltimaenergy or r/nissandrivers
You forgot Honda. They’re good too.
Toyota Corolla, and save up for what you actually want during the decades the Corolla lasts.
Any specific traits or mission requirements for this car?
I recently bought a 2014 Toyota Camry XLE hybrid with 103k miles for $12,600. at a Ford dealer. Reliable, 40 mpg.
USED HONDA CIVIC. Watch it go and go. Toyota Corolla too.
Found this sub, I no longer have these but will own a Pontiac again someday. Love all the cars in this Sub.
I once owned a modded 01 GTP coupe. It was fast and really a nice car I hated to let her go
Looks so much like my 1999 Grand Prix GT Coupe. I had the non-chromed version of these aluminum wheels. I would love to own one again, if I had the means…
The famous eagle Alloys 077’s.
Those Grand prixs used to be so popular. Now I don't even see them anymore.
If only they were rear wheel drive. Would've been awesome.
My '04 Grand Prix made it to over 280,000 before I sold it a couple of years ago. Loved that car. Yes, had to replace to power steering pump about 5 times and a few other things over the years I had it, but that engine was made to last!
Can be older models as well. Doesn't necessarily have to be cheap, it just has to have good value for its price.
I’d say a used C5 Corvette with a manual.
Proper sports car, huge aftermarket support. Decently affordable to buy, and not particularly expensive to maintain.
My only issue with these is costing 4x what w Miata does. The cheapest C5 in my area is $7500 for a wrecked one, front end and the rear quarter. I know it also has like 2x the power/weight ratio of a Miata but if you don't care about power you can get something that handles even better, same 2 seater rwd open top sports car experience with a manual, for $3k all day in my area.
And later if you want you could use the 10k you saved from not buying a Corvette and use it for an LS swap, k swap, or turbo kit, and still pocket a couple thousand. Been there done that. Gotta be willing to get your hands dirty though. C5 is probably the better choice for those not wanting to modify
Wtf? A 25-30 year old car no longer falls in the "cheap" category at all. Unless you're parking it in a garage and driving it slow on Sundays once a month.
Are you suggesting it's going to be expensive to maintain?
C5 Corvettes are cheap to maintain and they run forever. Just make sure you get one with a manual.
The question isn’t what is the cheapest. It’s the “best bang for the buck”. The answer to this question doesn’t need to be cheap. And since different people will be looking for different types of sports cars and have different pocket books, there is more than one answer to the question anyways.
A C5/C6 is a great way to get basically a track car for a relatively small investment compared to the competition.
Guy I know recently bought a C5 Z06 with like 50,000 miles on it for $20k. It has some minor things with it that need to be fixed but overall is a solid car. Tough to beat that value for what you're getting.
981 Boxster/cayman under 35k or a 986 Boxster under 10k. 996 turbo also.
986 Boxsters are under 10k?
I got a 987 Cayman S as one of my attainable dream cars
Sports car or just fun? I had a Toyota van with a manual transmission. If the road was wet, and the tires were bald, it would drift around any curve on the road. Called it my mid-engined sports van.
Toyota Vans are so freaking cool. I have a Previa, and the mid engine setup makes it better handling than any van has a right to be.

Key Considerations for Affordable Pontiac Cars
Model Selection: Look for models known for reliability and affordability, such as the Pontiac Vibe or Pontiac G6. These models often have lower maintenance costs and good fuel efficiency.
Condition: Consider purchasing a used Pontiac to save money. Check the vehicle's history report and have it inspected by a mechanic to ensure it's in good condition.
Fuel Efficiency: Evaluate the fuel economy of the models you're considering. The Pontiac Vibe, for example, is known for its excellent fuel efficiency, making it a cost-effective choice.
Insurance Costs: Research insurance rates for the models you're interested in, as some may have higher premiums than others.
Resale Value: Pontiacs may not hold their value as well as some other brands, which can be advantageous if you're looking for a good deal on a used car.
Recommendation: The Pontiac Vibe is often regarded as one of the best affordable options. It combines practicality, reliability, and good fuel economy (up to 32 MPG on the highway). Additionally, it has a spacious interior and cargo space, making it versatile for various needs. If you're looking for something sportier, the Pontiac G6 is also a solid choice, offering a comfortable ride and decent performance at an affordable price.
