What Redditors are Saying

Best Apps to Watch K-Dramas for Free

Viki

Viki is a popular platform that specifically caters to Asian content, including K-dramas. While it offers a free version, users have noted that it comes with a significant number of ads [2], [3:2]. Viki is praised for its extensive selection and is available on various TV apps [3:2], [4:1].

Tubi

Tubi is another option mentioned for watching K-dramas and K-movies. It is free with ads and is available in the US. Users have found the ad experience on Tubi to be more tolerable compared to other platforms like Hulu [4:1], [3:6].

Kissasian and KissKH

Kissasian has been recommended by several users for its vast library of dramas. However, it is important to note that the site is laden with pop-ups, so using an Adblock browser is advisable [3:1]. KissKH is another alternative mentioned for those looking to avoid ads [5:1], [4:2].

Dailymotion

Dailymotion was suggested as a potential platform for watching K-dramas, although some users have had mixed experiences with its content availability [2:6].

HiTV

The HiTV app is noted for having a seamless user interface, though availability may vary by region. Some users have reported issues with premium features not being accessible in their area [4:5], [4:6].

Additional Considerations

While these platforms offer free options, they often come with limitations such as ads or regional restrictions. For a more comprehensive experience without interruptions, paid subscriptions might be worth considering. Additionally, using an ad blocker can enhance the viewing experience on sites that allow it.

ORIGINAL POST

I’ve got Netflix and Prime, but I want more kdramas. What is the best platform/ app/ channel to subscribe to?

SensitiveTax9432 · 1 month ago

Viki specifically caters to Asian content. Cheaper than Netflix as well, with some options not found on either.

tardigradedontcare · OP · 1 month ago

I’ve been leaning there- I think I can’t download it on Amazon/Prime/firestick. Maybe on my phone? More research is needed.

1 upvotes on reddit

You can! I have it downloaded on my firestick! It was definitely a problem in the past but I checked again a few months ago and it worked perfectly

SensitiveTax9432 · 1 month ago

I prefer it on laptop browser and plugged into a tv. The subtitles are easier to read compared to chromecast. There’s a free option as well.

If you are in the US: Viki is the main site for them since dramafever shutdown, at least as far as I know. There's also Kocowa for some dramas. If you go to the main kdrama sub, I believe they have sites in the sidebar.

Additionally with some casual searching you will come across someone who set up a site to watch a lot of dramas if you're not so concerned about legalities.

I haven't been subbed to Hulu in awhile, but they used to have some dramas, I'm not sure how many if any they still have and how it compares to Netflix.

I really recommend viki too! They have most tv apps and has a really good selection!

Hulu has like 10 dramas but they are all worth watching ... While you were sleeping, legend of the blue sea, oh my Venus, dots, the smile has left your eyes, just between lovers, etc

Kissasian have been my favorite for the last 2 years, the amount of dramas available is incredible. I use it in my tablet with an Adblock browser as the amount of pop-ups is just ridiculous.

Oh? Must be different apps cuz I’ve seen many apps by the same name. Also when I click on HiTV VIP (premium) in mine it says it’s not available in my region 🤷🏻‍♀️ overall my experience has been pretty good

Mostly Viki and Netflix, also some on Amazon Prime (paid subscriptions). I tried Hulu but it had too many subtitle synching issues and excessive ads.

I've also recently discovered Tubi (free with ads in US) which has a good selection of older content not available on other platforms, but I've mostly only watched k-movies so far. The ads aren't too bad - definitely fewer than Hulu.

Where are you guys watching your dramas?

Posted by Petrichor_30 · in r/kdramas · 2 months ago

I watch kdramas on hitv but I now am noticing that they don’t have many dramas especially the ones that are not on Netflix and they have started to show THREE ads for ONE episode which pisses me off so much as they also show an ad the moment you open the app too. For the lack of newer and less known dramas on the app and the increasing ads I want to switch but don’t know where to go. So, please recommend me some websites or apps to watch kdramas at.

kisskh.do, bilibili or dailymotion. kisskh uploads the fastest but they use ai translations (which i find distracting. the english grammar is always way off, and you can tell it’s missing lines of dialogue) so you have to wait a few days for a human translation.

are you using a tablet or laptop? if on a laptop, you need to be on these sites using an adblock extension.

I've used Viki for years. I have the standard pass which is quite reasonable and eliminates ads. Good selection of Kdramas and Cdramas as well as movies and Japanese, Thai. Subtitles are much better than Netflix and frequently add cultural context. The only thing it doesn't have is the Netflix/Disney shows.

Is there a free streaming app or APK for watching old and new Korean dramas with English subtitles on an Android TV or TV box? Thank you! :)

I'm trying to set it up for older people with a lack of computer knowledge. They mainly use smart TVs or TV boxes in the living room and don't use computers or smartphones much. Additionally, smart TVs and TV boxes are easy to navigate once everything is installed and set up, and they find them easy to understand and use.

where do you guys watch your kdramas?

Posted by _lostssouls · in r/kdramas · 3 months ago

i usually just watch my kdramas on netflix since they are quite popular ones but as i watch more, the less i can find on netflix ( because we all know netflix's library isn't the best ) so i was searching for some sites and almost all of them either have a terribly small library, request subscriptions or have heinous amounts of ads ( i have an ad blocker but they won't let me watch until i've turned it off which i obviously don't want to do ) so if anyone has any reliable and good site please lmk !

I have Netflix and the paid subscription to Viki, which i have never regretted. Disney+/Hulu has a small but worthy library of action/ thriller kdramas that I have enjoyed. The ads, tho. 🙄

Viki, Netflix, Amazon Prime. However you can find a ton online if you’re looking.

Ok-Tailor-2030 · 3 months ago

You didn’t say where you’re located and it will make a difference. I’m in the USA.

I started with Netflix. Then realized there was much more content elsewhere. I started with the “free” version of Viki, watched as much as I could. Then I upgraded to the highest level subscription and never looked back. When I renew (annually), I just say take my money. Subtitles are markedly better than Netflix.

Other USA sources are: Hulu (Disney+ content), Prime, Tubi*, Roku*. *ad supported.

There is actually a good selection in Tubi if you’re in the U.S. and less ads compared to Viki free with gazillion of ads.

I have Rakuten Viki and Netflix. I originally signed up for the free version of Viki just to watch a show Netflix didn’t have, but I liked the quality of their subtitles so much I continued to the paid subscription. I actually went back and tried to rewatch a drama on Netflix that I’d already seen on Viki and the subtitles were shocking in comparison so now I always watch on Viki first and Netflix is my backup.

59 upvotes on reddit
Walu_lolo · 3 months ago

PREACH. I always look to see if a drama is on Viki first. I am bummed when it's only on Netflix, their subtitles are so bad in comparison.

School 2017 subtitles didn't make sense on Viki, so i had to watch on Netflix, but other than that, yeah i alternate between the two.

What do you mean by bad? Is the translation off?

2 upvotes on reddit
C
CherenkovLady · 3 months ago

Well all translations are just approximations, but I’ve found that Netflix lacks finesse a lot of the time. For example I watched weak hero s1 on Netflix and a lot of the subtleties were sort of bulldozed over. Viki’s version made made sure wording called back to previous phrases in the episodes, for example, while Netflix felt more like someone had just run it through an automatic translator. It wasn’t wrong, per se, it just wasn’t elegant. The viewing experience was worse.

Best apps to watch Kdramas for free

Here are some key considerations for watching Kdramas for free:

  1. Availability: Ensure the app has a good selection of Kdramas, including popular and recent titles.

  2. Ad Support: Free apps often rely on ads, so be prepared for interruptions during viewing.

  3. User Interface: A user-friendly interface can enhance your viewing experience, making it easier to find and navigate shows.

  4. Streaming Quality: Check if the app supports HD streaming for better picture quality.

  5. Legal Content: Opt for apps that provide legal access to Kdramas to support the creators.

Recommended Apps:

  1. Viki: Offers a wide range of Kdramas with subtitles in multiple languages. It has a free tier supported by ads.

  2. Kocowa: Features a good selection of Kdramas, variety shows, and more. It has a free trial, but ongoing access may require a subscription.

  3. Tubi: A free streaming service that includes a selection of Kdramas. It’s ad-supported but offers a variety of genres.

  4. YouTube: Many official channels upload Kdramas, so you can find some titles available for free.

  5. AsianCrush: Offers a selection of Asian dramas, including Kdramas, with a free ad-supported option.

Takeaway: While free options may have ads and limited selections, apps like Viki and Tubi are great starting points for enjoying Kdramas without a subscription. Always check for the latest titles and availability, as content can change frequently.
