What Redditors are Saying

Best Paid Streaming Services for K-Dramas

TL;DR

  • Viki: Widely recommended for its extensive K-drama library and quality subtitles.
  • Netflix: Offers exclusive content not available elsewhere.
  • Kocowa: Another popular choice, often complements Viki's offerings.
  • Tubi: Free with ads, offers a decent selection.

Viki

Viki is frequently mentioned as the top choice for K-drama enthusiasts due to its vast selection and high-quality subtitles. Users appreciate that Viki offers a wide variety of dramas not found on other platforms [1:2], [3:3]. While it has a free tier, many users prefer the paid subscription to avoid ads and improve video quality [1:6], [4:6]. However, availability can be region-dependent, so it's advisable to check what's accessible in your area [4:4].

Netflix

Netflix remains a solid option for K-dramas, particularly because of its exclusive content [2:2]. While some users find Netflix's subtitle quality lacking compared to Viki [3:8], it still serves as a backup for when shows aren't available on other platforms [3:3].

Kocowa

Kocowa is another service that offers a robust selection of K-dramas, often complementing what Viki provides [2:2], [2:5]. It's especially useful for those who want to watch content directly on their TV without casting from a phone [2:3].

Tubi

For those seeking a free option, Tubi offers a surprisingly large catalog of K-dramas with fewer ads than Viki's free version [1:5], [4:2]. However, the availability of Spanish subtitles might be limited [1:5].

Additional Considerations

While services like iQIYI, Tencent, and Youku are mentioned, they seem more focused on C-dramas, and users have mixed feelings about their value [5:3], [5:7]. Disney+ and Hulu offer a smaller but notable selection of action/thriller K-dramas [3:2], [4:3]. For those using a VPN, exploring different regional libraries might unlock additional content [4:8].

ORIGINAL POST

Can anyone recommend streaming services for Kdramas. I live in México and I use Netflix, Prime, Max, Paramount+ to watch dramas. Is there a website or streaming service y’all recommend for Kdramas or that focuses on Kdramas? Idk where else to look I tried asking ChatGPT but couldn’t really provide me what I am looking for.

Viki is the streaming service that probably has the best selection. I'm pretty sure it's available in Mexico. 😊

I would assume in Mexico too because there are Spanish subs. There are a ton of "watch free" offerings on viki to test it out with. In fact I recommend sticking with watch free for now they have given subscription discounts for kdrama appreciation day which I believe is on the 26th of Sept. Not sure if they will give the discount this year, since I think the last discount was lunar new year I think?

i waited about 2 year to sub to viki and almost never using it because of the awful resolution of the free tier. it felt like watching show in 420p... the paid tier now give me something like a bad 1080p, or good 720p, look good enough with my gpu or tv upscalling it. it's not Netflix 4k but it good enough. the free tier was awful.

Tubi is a free service with ads that is available in Mexico. It has a surprisingly large catalogue with some really great dramas for a free service. I am less sure how many of those offerings are subtitled in Spanish though.

Streaming Services - July, 2024

Welcome to our quarterly discussion about streaming sources! You can ask questions about legal streaming services or share experiences you have had while using a legal streaming service, including your thoughts about subtitle quality. Remember to include your region so people with personal knowledge of user experience in that region can answer you! Note: If you need technical assistance, please reach out to the customer service of your legal streaming service.

How To Find A Streaming Source For A Specific Drama

  • Drama Profile on MyDramaList (MDL): Drama profiles on MyDramaList may provide information about where certain dramas can be streamed. Availability of this information varies highly between dramas but it is a good starting point. Note that the availability information may not be complete for all regions of the world due to regional restrictions. See profile for The Heirs for example to see which streaming services have the drama.

  • User Compiled Database of Dramas Available on Viki: See this post (July 2020) for a database of dramas available on Viki organized by region. Note: Viki selections change over time so the information in this database may no longer be entirely accurate.

I have Kocowa, Viki, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon. Disney and a few others. Most of my content comes from 1) Viki 2) Kocowa 3) Netflix I watch mostly all K content. The reason for Netflix is that they sometimes have exclusive content that you can't see anywhere else.

For streaming, there is an issue that has really been bothering me. (For context: I have all Samsung TVs and have for many years, which work seemlessly with my Galaxy phones, speakers, buds, etc.) Kocowa, Netflix, etc. all have apps on Samsung tvs. Viki only has an app for Samsung tvs mfd in 2018 or later. In order to watch Viki you have to cast from your phone to the TV. That means I can not text, etc, while watching Viki content. My Samsung tvs work perfectly. I can't see the value in "upgrading" just to get Viki. However, Viki is my number 1 platform, and the app interface is so much better than the phone app. While browsing content in the phone app it constantly jumps back to the top of the page and also doesn't have an elegant and easy way to keep track of what you're watching and when new episodes are released. I've already upgraded all of my tvs once to get better smart feature versions. Doing that again for 1 app feels so wrong and wasteful. Yet I think about it every time I'm streaming Viki 🤔

How often do you find that you're watching something on Kocowa that isn't on Viki?

1 upvotes on reddit
Much_Engineering_364 · 1 year ago

Not very much, I watch things on Kocowa over Viki because it's on the app, so it's simpler than casting from my phone. Usually, what I watch is available on Viki.

Disney+ Korea Youtube should be added as an official channel because it has been posting the previews for Korean dramas and other promotional content for dramas on the platform. YouTube: @DisneyPlusKR

If you want subbed Disney+ trailers, maybe also add the Disney+ Singapore YouTube channel @disneyplus_singapore.

Posted by _lostssouls · in r/kdramas · 3 months ago

i usually just watch my kdramas on netflix since they are quite popular ones but as i watch more, the less i can find on netflix ( because we all know netflix's library isn't the best ) so i was searching for some sites and almost all of them either have a terribly small library, request subscriptions or have heinous amounts of ads ( i have an ad blocker but they won't let me watch until i've turned it off which i obviously don't want to do ) so if anyone has any reliable and good site please lmk !

I have Rakuten Viki and Netflix. I originally signed up for the free version of Viki just to watch a show Netflix didn’t have, but I liked the quality of their subtitles so much I continued to the paid subscription. I actually went back and tried to rewatch a drama on Netflix that I’d already seen on Viki and the subtitles were shocking in comparison so now I always watch on Viki first and Netflix is my backup.

What do you mean by bad? Is the translation off?

2 upvotes on reddit
C
CherenkovLady · 3 months ago

Well all translations are just approximations, but I’ve found that Netflix lacks finesse a lot of the time. For example I watched weak hero s1 on Netflix and a lot of the subtleties were sort of bulldozed over. Viki’s version made made sure wording called back to previous phrases in the episodes, for example, while Netflix felt more like someone had just run it through an automatic translator. It wasn’t wrong, per se, it just wasn’t elegant. The viewing experience was worse.

There is actually a good selection in Tubi if you’re in the U.S. and less ads compared to Viki free with gazillion of ads.

You didn’t say where you’re located and it will make a difference. I’m in the USA.

I started with Netflix. Then realized there was much more content elsewhere. I started with the “free” version of Viki, watched as much as I could. Then I upgraded to the highest level subscription and never looked back. When I renew (annually), I just say take my money. Subtitles are markedly better than Netflix.

Other USA sources are: Hulu (Disney+ content), Prime, Tubi*, Roku*. *ad supported.

Check out Viki, it probably has the most kdramas. I use it as much as Netflix/Prime/Hulu combined. There are some that are free but to gain full access you need to pay. Subscriptions are cheaper for Viki than the other streaming services.

You can watch Dali and the Cocky Prince, Study Group, Lovely Runner, Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, Shooting Stars, The Forbidden Marriage, Perfect Marriage Revenge, My Sweet Mobster, Let Me Be Your Knight, Another Miss Oh, and literally hundreds of other kdramas.

Kocowa also has a streaming service but I found most (but not all) kdramas streaming on Kocowa are available on Viki. I watched Marry You.

Tubi also had kdramas and it’s free but there are ads throughout it and it doesn’t have an ad free option (I watch via a smart tv so an ad blocker isn’t an option as far as I know)

Edited to add some dramas.

I subscribe to Viki to avoid ads, they always seem to pop up right when I’m truly getting into the story and breaks my focus! I’m having the same issue with Tubi, I can’t imagine how many ads Viki has if it’s more than Tubi!

Agree on Viki. It has the most you won’t find anywhere else.

I’ve also found Disney/Hulu has a good selection such as High School: Return of a Gangster, Dinner Mate, Kiss Sixth Sense, DP (harsh by very well acted!), Buried Hearts, The Light Shop, The Judge, Moving, Call It Love.

lifeversion9 · 2 months ago

Just a warning on Viki - its region dependent, so if a free trial is possible do that first. I’m in Ireland and find a lot that is listed on My Drama List as being available on Viki isn’t available where I am. I’m considering to cancel Viki the Kdrama section is very empty. It’s the same with Prime, but Prime membership at least has free shipping.

I also subscribe to iQIYI, Tencent, and Youku but tbh I don’t think I want to keep them since I feel like I’m just wasting my money (will keep iQIYI, though). Just a total c/k-drama enthusiast here so wondering if there’s anything else better out there or not.

FWIW, I think if I could only choose one, it would be Viki. Viki has a lot of the more popular C dramas. I have an IQIYI subscription as well, I find there is quite a bit of over lap between Viki and IQIYI. So if you are keeping IQIYI maybe Viki is not a good choice.

Early this year, I discovered that I really, really wanted to watch Scent of Time but unfortunately it's only available on Max. I could scribe Max $9.99/month with Amazon but I couldn't do that to my hard-earned money. I ended up watching the drama on a pirate website, not once but twice because I loved the story and plan to read the novel when I'm done with all these recent new dramas.

Why do you want to cancel Youku? Kill Me Love Me will be released by Youku. That's the drama I have been patiently waiting for.

Kdramas on platforms outside of Netflix?

Posted by DisastrousBuyer5574 · in r/kdramas · 5 months ago

I have Netflix and Hulu with live. I like all of us are dead, hellbound, sweet home and a ton of others on Netflix. Hulu has very few k-dramas/horrors. Is there another platform with more that you could recommend? Does prime or disney have anything? If it matters I prefer English dubs. Subtitle only shows work too but requires more focus than I can provide at times. Thanks

They have the best subtitles too. Often explaining puns or other wordplay jokes that just can't translate. Hulu, with Disney behind them, has horrible subtitles; which sometimes they just vanish until you reload a few times.

Although Viki's interface does need improvement. When a new episode of something I'm following comes out, it should be at the top of the homepage. I should not have to search🔎 for it.

And going from phone to computer, I have to wait 10 minutes or I get the 'too many devices' warning.

TUBI. Tubi actually has a great selection with a lot of horror/crime dramas and movies (in fact my biggest complaint is that they don’t have enough light rom coms). And it’s free! I will say probably more crime rn than horror, but many of those are like serial killer thrillers not just crime procedural.

Disney+ has quite a few great shows, and they specialise in "darker" dramas. Sometimes, they're not tagged properly and don't show up in category searches, so you have to search by name if you want something in particular.

If possible, please always watch with subtitles, so you can hear the actors' beautiful voices. D+'s closed-caption subtitles are annoying, though.

My faves on D+ are:

Revenant.

Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born.

A Shop For Killers.

Thank you, I'll check them out. Tried Disney+ but had a difficult time finding anything, I think I did try searching through by the tags lol. I try to use subs, I'm a hearing impaired vet anyway. But I'm also a textbook multitasker and can't always focus solely on the subs.Lol

Streaming Services - April, 2025

Posted by AutoModerator · in r/KDRAMA · 5 months ago

Available drama selections of Viki in my country (Philippines) is sadly very limited. So limited that Netflix and Viu offers way so much more selections 😥

Disney+ Rant:

I really dislike Disney+ for the reasons below, but will keep subscribing because some of my favourites are on it.

  1. Closed-captioning is the only option for English subtitles, which is so distracting and annoying!

  2. None of their cast promo videos are subtitled into English or other languages.

  3. They don't publicise dramas they buy and don't even give free promotion on their home page, eg, "new to D+" section.

  4. Genre tagging is hit and miss for each show. Jeongnyeon, for example, isn't included in the "Made In Korea" or "Asian Spotlight" collections and can only be found by searching by name.

  5. I don't understand why D+ has different release dates globally. Are they trying to drive subscribers away?

I agree with you - and right now two of the current shows I'd like to watch have only the English dub available, which of course I can't stomach. The ones that are subbed sometimes stop subbing randomly and I have to rewind a bit to make them work again,

The closed captioning thing is so annoying. It's such a distraction when I just want to read the dialogue :(

I miss the time when old dramas were available on Cereal (and I mean ALL the episodes!)

I really feel like Tubi deserves a shout out here. It has a surprisingly impressive catalogue for a free service. I actually spent several months in my early K-drama days ONLY watching what Tubi had. After getting a Viki subscription, I only returned to Tubi recently to find that while it still had the favorites I first discovered there, it had quite a few other dramas I've seen recommended a lot.

While the subtitles are not up to Viki's standards, I find them more accurate than Netflix's or Hulu's actually (I haven't watched any dramas on Amazon or Disney+). I know there is the occasional timing issue, but I've only experienced it a few times and I've watched dozens of titles. It's a great resource for people in the countries where it is available who don't want a new subscription but want to see what is beyond Netflix.

I'm coming to the end of what my Netflix has, and I want to watch all of the awesome recommends from this subreddit. Recommends for other (better) streaming platforms with English subtitles?

I have a standard Viki pass (I'm on the UK) and much prefer it to Netflix, the only problem is I can't download shows to watch offline. The range of shows is great, and the quality of streaming is really good. I also like the subtitles and their more literal nature.

Viki is the only good option imo that is legitimate (I'm assuming USA here, I don't know about outside of it). I tried using Kocawa but their app was buggy as hell, maybe it's better now or maybe the web player works, idk. I think you can get all of the Kocawa content for an extra $5 per month on Viki though.

Viki consists of fansubs, while I believe Kocowa has professional subs, so that could affect your preferences.

I'm not sure if Hulu still has some, but that could be worth looking into. R.I.P. Dramafever, which was my favorite site that's now defunct. And I believe Asian Crush has some K Dramas, although I don't know how if they have a lot and whether it's of good quality.

If you're not as concerned with legitimate means or can't find it on Viki, there's a certain site by a redditor that has access to many shows. It's easy to find with a search. However I haven't been able to access it for a few months, so I don't know if it's been shut down or if it's a problem on my end.

Best paid streaming services for Kdramas

Key Considerations for Paid Streaming Services for Kdramas:

  1. Content Library: Look for services that offer a wide selection of Kdramas, including both popular titles and new releases.

  2. Subtitles and Dubbing: Ensure the service provides high-quality subtitles and, if preferred, dubbed versions in your language.

  3. Original Content: Some platforms produce their own Kdramas, which can be a bonus if you're looking for exclusive titles.

  4. User Interface: A user-friendly interface and easy navigation can enhance your viewing experience.

  5. Device Compatibility: Check if the service is compatible with your devices (smart TVs, tablets, smartphones, etc.).

Top Recommendations:

  1. Netflix:

    • Pros: Extensive library of Kdramas, including original series like "Kingdom" and "Crash Landing on You." Offers high-quality subtitles and dubbing.
    • Cons: Subscription cost can be higher compared to other services.
  2. Viki (Rakuten Viki):

    • Pros: Specializes in Asian dramas, including a vast collection of Kdramas. Offers community-submitted subtitles in multiple languages.
    • Cons: Some content may require a premium subscription for ad-free viewing.
  3. Kocowa:

    • Pros: Focuses on Korean content, including dramas, variety shows, and music programs. Offers same-day releases for some shows.
    • Cons: Limited availability outside of North America.
  4. iQIYI:

    • Pros: Offers a growing library of Kdramas and original content. Competitive pricing for subscriptions.
    • Cons: Interface may not be as polished as others.
  5. Amazon Prime Video:

    • Pros: Includes a selection of Kdramas, and you can rent or buy specific titles.
    • Cons: The Kdrama selection is not as extensive as dedicated platforms.

Recommendation: If you're looking for the best overall experience, Netflix is highly recommended due to its extensive library and original content. However, if you're specifically focused on Kdramas, Viki is an excellent choice for its community-driven subtitles and variety of titles.
