TL;DR
Rogue Subclasses and Weapons
The thief subclass is highly recommended due to its ability to utilize bonus actions effectively, allowing for extra attacks per round [2:3],
[3:3]. Dual-wielding hand crossbows or short swords are popular choices for maximizing attack opportunities and sneak attack potential
[2:2],
[4:6]. Finesse weapons like rapiers can also be effective, especially if you take the appropriate feats
[3:5].
Skills and Attributes
High dexterity is crucial for a rogue build, as it affects both attack rolls and armor class. Starting with 17 dexterity and aiming for 18 by level 4 is recommended [3:2],
[3:4]. Medium armor proficiency can also be beneficial for additional protection
[3:2]. Stealth and sleight of hand are important skills for utility and avoiding detection
[1:1],
[4:1].
Multiclass Options
For those interested in multiclassing, combining rogue with Hexblade Warlock can provide a versatile build that covers stealth and lockpicking while utilizing powerful spells and abilities [5:1],
[5:5]. A common approach is a 9 Hexblade/3 Swashbuckler split, which allows for upcasting Shadow Blade and making use of sneak attacks
[5:3]. Stat distribution should focus on maximizing charisma, dexterity, and constitution for optimal performance
[5:2].
Combat Strategy
Initiating combat with other party members and using your rogue to attack from a distance can be an effective strategy [2:4]. Positioning your rogue for sneak attacks every round by utilizing stealth and strategic movement is key
[4:1]. Applying poison or dipping weapons in fire can enhance damage output
[2:1].
Items, skills, and subclasses if pure isn’t the way to go. Tips are appreciated as well as this is my first Baldurs Gate game. I did play DOS2 and it seems similar so far but idk. Thank you for your time.
You really can’t go wrong since it’s a martial class and doesn’t have a ton of options.
Stealth rolls aren’t too important surprisingly because you can just avoid the cones of vision and not have a check. But it’s nice if you make a mistake. Sleight of hand is big though.
Minor illusion is your friend, you’ll want to have access to it.
You will want to use finesse weapons. Either a rapier by itself or two light weapons. If you dual wield light weapons, the offhand won’t do much damage so put your utility weapons there.
All three subclasses are good. I recommend thief or arcane trickster.
Thief gets an extra bonus action which lets you attack with the offhand twice, sprint like hell, or disengage and hide. I would put a +1 weapon in the offhand since you attack twice with it.
Arcane trickster gets spells. You’ll want to pick utility ones like minor illusion or misty step. Nothing with a save, ideally. With this subclass, you won’t want to put extra into int.
The assassin has a build with gloomstalker ranger that is strong and good for soloing the game.
With attributes, max out dex, and put high amounts into con. Don’t sleep on str, as jumping is key to getting you into good sneaky spots. Usually a feat is not as good as more dex.
Also it can be good to use bows, especially early. The range lets you easily hide and get advantage for very consistent sneak attacks
I would love to see which in your view would be the strongest possible rogue
Currently? Best rogue build is thief with dual hand crossbows.
Hell, once sharpshooter is implemented that might be the best rogue build in full game as well, even when loading is also implemented.
Depends what you want to do, I suppose. Metrics for character strength include more than damage output.
If you're looking for raw damage output though...
You should be able to get 18dex and 16con, assuming you use the hag hair for con.
Dual wield +1 shortswords, thief subclass, apply poison to your weapons or dip them in fire. Attack 3 times a round.
Always park your rogue next to your battlemaster fighter, and give your fighter Menacing Attack. Your rogue will be able to make an additional opportunity attack if the target gets feared.
At level 5 in a full round this equates to 6d6+3d4+5, and a potential additional 1d6+1d4+5. The total averages for damage with no crits or misses accounted for are 33.5 and possibly up to 44.5.
If you can land a hold person on a target, it guarantees that all melee attacks against that target are crits, and your damage total would be approximately 62.
HOWEVER, I've found that sneak is very easy to abuse in this game, and it's easy to keep your rogue out of initiative order, and just sort of sit back and plug whatever they want with a bow without having to worry about turn orders or anything like that at all, so mechanically that's probably the most powerful option.
Didn’t even think about thief min/maxing with bonus attacks. Can’t wait to try this out ♥️
Menacing attack no longer sends the target running. I don’t remember what the heck it does exactly now, but they nerfed the running bit.
Frightened condition gives the enemies attacks Disadvantage (which is helpful), but they also will not move. So it's kind of the opposite of what it used to be before they fixed it. And yes, I do think it's a fix because the previous frightened condition was basically the lvl 3 Fear spell.
The best is to initiate the fight with your other party members and then use your rogue, that isn't in the battle, to launch as many arrows as you want in the enemies. So before the enemy can make one move you have already killed everyone.
How / why is this possible? Should not the rogue enter the battle as soon as he hits an enemy?
Stealth my dude stealth. Hopefully that gets changed
Astarion because of his bite.
Halfling dual-wielding hand crossbows John Woo style.
Just go theif at lv3 then get dex to 18 on lv4
If your starting with 17 dex then get medium armor proficiency instead which allows you to pick up 1 dex as well. So thief, 18 dex, medium armor, two short swords.
I second this. I think duel weilding short swords is the best you can do right now. Each turn try to sneak attack with 2 off hand weapon attacks, occasionally using a bonus action to dash to close a gap or better position for backstab bonus.
Im not sure arcane trickster will really come online unless they add in the Green Flame Blade and Booming Blade cantrips (and change how sneak attack works so it could work with them). Those cantrips really make the arcane trickster shine imo.
Rapier sword is better, its 1d8 and still finesse. If you take the feat for it that is
Thief with its 2 bonus actions is OP. (This is one thing Larian REALLY needs to go back to TTRPG rules about, make using items an action instead of a bonus, then give the bonus action use of items to the Thief subclass only.)
But then you get the problem of bonus actions not being used for enough stuff. I would just end up only using the bonus actions to push people.
I don't think that's a problem at all. I'd much rather have a balanced combat system and balance between classes than more things to do with my bonus action.
Closing the game and firing up Solasta.
>Solasta
Woah, thank you for this comment catboy. I did a google.
I'm still salty about Expertise being left out! It would be the easiest thing in the world to code!
Ask r/Nissan
I'm trying out rogue for the first time. but I don't know what are good weapons or if two handed is better long term should also mention it's my first time playing a game like this too
If you don't mind abusing a hand crossbow glitch then using the thief subclass and sharp shooter lets you do the 10 extra damage with hand crossbows with your two bonus attack shots from your off hand without taking the -5 attack roll penalty. Multiclass rouge 6/ fighter 6 and take archery fighting style for another +2 to attack rolls, ability to wear breastplate, shields, extra attack, action surge, second wind and with the extra feat at lvl 6 from fighter you still end up with 3 out of 4 feats. You miss out on evasion and reliable talent but the stuff you get from fighter is just too good to pass up.
Alternatively if you want to be a crazy assassin then the assassin subclass and half-orc race go like bread and butter. 3X damage on crits from orc and guarantied crits from assassin go crazy.
Assassin is fun with a dagger and/bow of any kind and high dex. Always get a stealth attack on the first round of combat (if I remember correctly it's a stealth attack if the enemy hasn't taken a turn yet?) Hits like a truck.
Not tried thief or arcane trickster yet but they look fun
What about crossbows and dual wield short swords?
I think if the melee weapon has 'finesse' on it, it can be used as a sneak attack weapon
As can crossbows I believe :)
Equally viable. There are two Very Rare magic shortswords that are very good, as well as two Very Rare hand crossbows. Twice the attacks=More chance for hit=more sneak attack connection, shortswords do deal more natural damage than daggers, and also the hand crossbows (Ne’er and Hellfire) got some nice spells to them too (Magic Missile and Scorching Ray).
With any Rogue. Try to sneak attack every round. Hold Shift and try to get into a zone, the enemy cant see. Dont use Hide, use the other thing that just use a bonus action and sneak attack the enemy every round.
I'm just jumping back into baldurs gate 3 and I want tk make a hexblade who can also cover stealth and lockpicking. Recommendations?
Hexblade swashbuckler is great. 5/7, 7/5, 8/4, 9/3 are all great
What would you recommend for stat distribution?
Max charisma, then put like 16 in condition and 14 in dexterity for AC and initiative. 14 on con and 16 on Dex should also work. Dump strength to 8 and spend the rest at some intelligence and wisdom for saves
I used the dexterity gloves in the later parts of the game to have Dex at 18 and respecked to put those points somewhere else
Side note: you can get 2 big sources of dexterity throw advantage. Lady Esther's monk robes and resonant stone. This advantage also applies to lock picking so it's great for a rouge ish character
I just finished a hexblade assassin play through 9/3 split, able to upcast shadow blade to max and able to make use of sneak attacks
Newer to the game… what do you mean by a 9/3 split?
9 hexblade 3 assassin
Aside from the Hexbuckler, you can technically also make the EB Spammer build with Assassin/Thief, Sorcerer, whatever Warlock, and Fighter optionally. They do fill the niche of a Expertise + CHA build, and even though they are traditionally more played with GOO for spreading Fear, Hexblade is still a possibility if you drop Fighter and wanted Medium Armor and Shield proficiency still.
Hex buckler. Thief are not that good since bonus action attacks won't be able to use hexed weapon.
Buckler can use it though
There are ways around this. Polearm master with a weapon like dancing breeze works great. Of course, finesse long-reach weapons aren’t common but I just wanted to point out this option!
But if you're going hexblade you don't need a finesse weapon right ? Unless the pole arm master BA attack doesn't use CHA with an hexed weapon ?
9 Hexblade Warlock / 3 Swashbucker Rogue I think is the move if you want to use Shadow Blade.
If not wanting to use Shadow Blade because it's overkill: 5 Hexblade / 7 Swashbuckler is pretty good. I like using Phalar aluve or Larethian's Wrath w/ GWM. Big hits that also use sneak attack. Can upgrade to Dancing Breeze in Act 3 :)
What's the point of swash 3 when the good stuff is at 4
So I am getting BG3(I know, I’m late to the party), my favorite class is the rogue, and I am really excited to play as one. But I’m not sure what subclass to chose. I’m currently in a live campaign where I’m an assassin/paladin (vengeance). I’m curious what the best subclass for the rogue would be for the game. What’s thief about? Why is it “the best” according to several sites I’ve seen.
I’m also considering doing the gloomstalker/Rogue build but don’t know what class to start with, do you go back and fourth, 5 levels ranger the rest rogue, start rogue to get the expertise then go into ranger??
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thief is great because it gives you an extra bonus action every turn, pair this with dual wielding you can get a lot of damage/utility just from the rogue alone, my first playthrough I went full rogue/thief and enjoyed it
On my honor playthrough I had astarion do the glookstalker/thief and I started by going 3 in rogue to get to thief, then 5 in ranger for the extra attack, and then 2 in fighter for action surge. If you do assassin instead of thief you can get like 8 attacks in the first turn with a haste potion/spell it’s kinda of crazy
I know in 5e rogues get better sneak attack the more lvl you go. Does the same apply in bg3? Like are you losing dmg in sneak attack by adding 2 lvls of fighter?
I believe with rogue you add an extra 1d6 per 2 levels of rogue so at level 3,5,7 and so on , so you would miss out on an extra 1d6 by taking fighter but I feel the extra action with action surge as well as the fighter bonus from level 1 (I usually go for the extra 1 AC) is pretty worthwhile imo
Also what’s an honor play through?
Currently the hardest difficulty , you do less damage , enemies have more health and do more damage, bosses have new legendary actions, you only get one save file, so no savescumming, & if your entire party dies the run is over (you can continue to play but it will be labeled as dishonour mode) definitely recommend balanced for a first playthrough
Thief is considered the best rogue subclass for one reason: you get a second bonus action. This is great when dual wielding (melee weapons or hand crossbows), because that enables you to attack with bonus actions. It also supports a playstyle where you use one of your bonus actions to hide after attacking each turn, to set up sneak attack the following turn. 3 levels of Thief is also a great multiclass addition to other classes that can make good use of the bonus action, like Monks and Barbarians. Assassin is also good, especially when not dual-wielding. Arcane Trickster sucks.
Gloomstalker/rogue builds are very strong, and generally better than a pure rogue (which falls off at higher levels, from a damage perspective) while having a similar vibe/playstyle. Highly optimized versions of this build are contenders for the best possible single-target damage in the game. The important thing is 5+ levels of Ranger (for extra attack) and 3+ levels of rogue, the rest is up to you. I like to do 5 ranger / 5 rogue / 2 fighter for archery builds. The fighter dip gets you action surge and allows you to have both the archery and two-weapon fighting styles (one style each from ranger and fighter). The rogue subclass is up to you - thief and assassin are both good. I would go for thief if you plan to use hand crossbows, or assassin to maximize first-turn damage with normal bows. It works well to use thief for the first 2/3 of the game, and switch to assassin for act 3.
How you approach the levels in the early game is up to you. Rogue and Ranger are both good early. Personally I prefer rogue, sneak attack and dual-wielding give you better damage potential in the level 1-4 range, when most classes don't really "come online" until level 5. Ranger is one of those classes, but early access to hunter's mark and dread ambusher is also pretty good. Once you hit level 5 it's good to respec into pure ranger to get extra attack as soon as possible, and then start adding rogue levels after that.
This is some fairly in the weeds multiclass min/maxing stuff. If you find that fun like I do, go for it. But don't feel like you have to - the game is generally not hard enough that optimized builds are required, especially if you aren't on the highest difficulty. Any single-class build is good enough to beat the game.
FYI you can freely (well, cheaply and pickpocket the gold back) respec your characters at any time, so it's perfectly viable to change your level split or the order of your classes at any time. And just generally, you're never locked into your build choices so that takes some of the pressure off when leveling up.
My first run I ran a thief rogue, and the extra bonus action was nice since I was dual wielding. I switched to assassin in the rest of my runs because I wanted advantage to sneak attack to start combat, and then an automatic second sneak attack in the first round.
Just pick something. Rogues in 5e are a little under-served, and BG3 doesn't make it any better. Bards get the same expertise they do, so make just as good choices for "who disarms the traps". And all the really hard locks are going to be picked by your wizard casting a Knock spell anyway.
Most power builds involving rogue take just a few levels, most importantly for the extra bonus action Thiefs get get at level 3 (and then use it for some other class ability like a dual wielding fighter -- this answers your question about why thiefs are best).
A pure rogue isn't useless, but it's not going to stand out.
Which is why I’m thinking of going ranger/rogue
I would recommend starting as ranger getting 5 levels and dipping 3 levels of rogue. After this, I would get 4 levels on fighter (get the defense fighting style, and probably battle master) for action surge + another feat
You could even respec into fighter for heavy armour prof and go for fighter 6, rogue 3 and ranger 4 for an extra feat (max out dex and sharpshooter)
I'm trying to build towards stealth rogue but in fights (I'm in a game of 3 people) I still feel very unimpactful when I do get my stealth attacks off. tips, or do I just switch to ranger lol?
How far in are you?
Pre hard mode you really can’t
Hard mode it gets slightly better
Post Moon Lord is finally stealth strikes start paying off as you have accessories which start doing crazy things.
Just beat mechs. should i just spam until post moonlord?
So soon you’ll be able to get all sorts of accessories like Ruin Medallion, electricians glove, Vampiric Talisman, Abyssal Mirror, Etheral Extorter start to become really good and you have lots of rogue options.
I think post moon lord it just gets even better. But for now stealth strikes to make you the most survivable person works wonders.
And use pots if you haven’t yet. They help!
You need to prioritize the normal attack skill and the invisible skill before others (shadow slash and Molotov). But join the discord for other opinions and stats build priorities
with invisibility and poison cloud at high level, you can alternate both skills to bé able to kill almost any enemy without taking damage
Level up 1,3,5,8,9 first.
Dagger cut is your main skill, I like to use invisibility, shadow cover both to reduce damage nor 0 dmg, poison cloud stuns enemy and do dmg and the dagger attack (it's always critical when you are invisible) for boss fight switch the last 2 skills for poison daggers and Molotov. Stats to prioritise: armour penetration > critical damage > damage > attack speed.
Starting a new game as dark urge and going to stay rogue and want to know what stats to prioritise.
Dex 16, con 14 is probably the only things you actually need. Everything else is pretty arguable and mostly comes down to preferences on mostly secondary trade offs. I'd say that if you want to do social checks good pick Charisma, otherwise take Wisdom as perception is good and wisdom saves suck to fail.
Would I be better with like 16 char and 10 wis or does wis need to be higher? Thanks.
I'd say more wisdom personally. You can use your 4 skill proficiencies + background and even expertise to get all the social checks and just lightly invest in charisma (Zariel Tiefling can also help here to grant advantage on two of them). I'd say something like a 14/12 wis/cha split would be good enough without any issues and then adjust from there. The reason wisdom is better is that wisdom saving throws can be rather annoying if you fail them while charisma saving throws are very rare to have happen at all.
You don't have much use for 16 charisma as a Rogue. If you want to succeed social checks, you have Proficiency and Expertise you can use instead. The same argument can be used for the Wisdom-based checks. Rogues get a lot of skill points to help make-up for any stat deficiencies in skill checks.
If you have plans to be an Arcane Trickster, you might consider going 16 DEX, 14 CON, 16 INT, and prioritizing INT over DEX for ASIs.
Dex 17, Rest Like u wanna play. Get as soon as possible dex 20, finished
Dexterity. Everything else is preference.
Hey Guys, so I just recently finished my first Solo HM run with a Archer build and I now want to do a melee build run.
I've always loved dual wielding daggers with Assasin/Rogue type characters in other games and was now thinking about how to play such a build in BG3.
Right now I have 3 ideas:
this Shadow Monk/Rogue build by Friendly Lich
6 Swordbard/4 Thief/2 Figther with Dual Weapon Fighting Style and also dual wielding crossbows if I need to hit far away enemies if necessary.
7 EK/ 5 Thief for maximum amount of hitting enemies in melee with Booming Blade + War Caster + off-hand weapon attacks
I want to use Bhaalist Armor and probably both of Orins weapons late game. Besides that I would be grateful for suggestions and ides. Also if you guys know other fun build ideas for this kind of playstyle I would very much appreciate it :)
Have you considered the Church of Skirmishing brought to you by our lord and savior Remus71?
If nothing else this should give you some ideas until you get to act 3 for the Bhaalist stuff.

Monk (Drunk) 8 / Rogue (Thief) 4
shines a spotlight on skirmishing on the drunk monk chassis
Thanks for the tip! Seems very interesting and fun. I will definitely consider it!
the easiest classes to solo honour are EK 12 or some form of rogue with atleast 5 for uncanny dodge or better 7, even 11 and 1 level for proficiensies is very much great.
Yeah I really like EK and as I mentioned I just finished Ek/ 1 War Cleric Archer. But your reasoning was pretty much why I thought about 7 EK/ 5 Thief.
do hexblade 5/arcane trickster 7 (make sure hex is after arcane trickster so you use charisma), you will be immortal and nuke everything with shadow blade and resonating stone, 7 rogue sneak attacks will add psychic dmg (same type as weapon) and its very very strong, arcane trickster because i like having ritual spells like longstrider, enchanced leap, feather fall, but you can use swashbuckler and basicly have 3 attacks with the 2 from hexblade and bonus from swash, very very strong. If you go AT use the invis mage hand behind your target to have advantage for the sneak attacks.
Of those 3 option, my favorite is the shadow monk multiclass. There are a few variants and Im not sure that that one is my favorite specifically because I dont I care for the fighter dip as much, but Im sure that preference will vary between players. Getting two weapon fighting is definitely nice.
Ive only tested a couple shadow monk variants with thief and assassin, but I think the thief version works better if you want to utilize the dual daggers.
I am also leaning towards the shadow monk build, I am very intrigued by the varied possibilities of using my bonus actions and the mobility with free misty step.
Not sure about the Fighter dip. But I think Action Surge can be very clutch and I really like Two Weapon Fighting here.
Yeah that's definitely fair. The way I play would probably be more like just using invisibility to reset combat in general. But action surge can still come in clutch sometimes.
Do the usual gloomstalker/assassin builds not work for dual daggers? Seems like they would.
I was thinking about it, but somehow Gloomstalker/Assasin isn't as appealing to me. I think it would work fine tho.
I've done it with pure assassin 12. It's scary but still fun until you get Bloodlust Elixir, then it's less scary and way more awesome.
