Strength and Greatsword Builds
A popular choice for PvE is a strength-focused build using dual greatswords. Players recommend prioritizing Vigor and Endurance early on, with Strength being your primary damage stat [1:1]
[1:2]. The Iron Greatsword, Gargoyle Greatsword, and Banished Knight Greatsword are noted as strong options
[1:1]
[1:12]. Adding Cold affinity with Chilling Mist or Storm Blade can provide extra utility
[1:1]. Jump attacks are particularly effective, so equipping the Claw Talisman is recommended
[1:3].
Faith and Hybrid Builds
For those interested in incorporating magic, adding some Faith can enhance your build with buffs like Golden Vow and Flame Grant Me Strength [1:7]
[1:8]. Weapons such as Ordovis's Greatsword offer fun Ashes of War that scale well with Faith
[1:10]. A dexterity/faith hybrid build can be effective against fast DLC bosses, providing versatility between melee and spellcasting
[4:3].
Greatshield and Spear Builds
For players who prefer a defensive playstyle, a greatshield paired with a spear or thrusting sword allows for safe poking while blocking [3:1]. Endurance and stamina mitigation are crucial, so talismans that support these attributes are beneficial
[3:1]. Strength remains important for wielding most shields effectively.
Holy and Light-Based Builds
The Multilayered Ring of Light build focuses on maximizing the damage output of this specific spell. Key gear includes two Dryleaf Seals and Circlet of Light to boost spell damage significantly [4]. Adding Sword of Light's skill for additional holy damage can further enhance this build
[4:2]. This setup excels in dealing high damage but may require supplementary melee weapons for certain bosses
[4:3].
General PvE Build Philosophy
Ultimately, the best PvE build is one that suits your playstyle and preferences. Full strength builds with heavy armor and high defense shields are favored by many for their resilience and straightforward approach [5:1]
[5:4]. Experimenting with different weapons and abilities will help you find what works best for you in Elden Ring's challenging environments.
I’m looking to dual wield great swords and was wondering if anyone has any build recommendations. I have beaten the first 2 bosses and am enjoying the class but am not sure where to be putting my skill points each level.
Im not that interested in magic but what’s most important out of Vigor, endurance, strength etc?
Edit: for context I am currently running the claymore and the Lordsworn Greatsword.
FINALLY I CAN INFO DUMP
I love powerstancing greatswords and its literally the only builds that I do so here's what I would do.
27-30 Endurance is usually pretty good for powerstancing, I find that I can get a good armor set with about 51-54 poise with that but you can definitely go higher if you want.
I'm really comfortable with 40 Vigor but 50 is a good midpoint if you struggle. For those two greatswords, they both are best with Strength so try to aim for 70-80. Faith is good if you want to get buffs like Golden Vow and Flame Grant Me Strength. Fire affinities would be good if you want some elemental damage cuz I think they scale with strength a little bit but also scale in Faith.
For early game Talismans I usually go Green Turtle, Radagon Soreseal, Claw Talisman. Then by RL80+ I switch Radagon for one of the Dragoncrest Talismans if I can get my hands on them and I usually do magic/faith powerstancing so I'll add one of the Scorpion charms but if you do Fire, use the Fire Scorpion Charm. If not, Erdtree Favor/Crimson Amber for extra survivability, if you're at 75 Strength use Starscourge, and maybe Dagger Talisman or Blade of Mercy for Critical damage boost when you poise break
Also for Physick Stonebarb Cracked Tear for more Poise damage and Opaline Hardtear for more damage reduction is what I use but if your confident, Blood Sucking Cracked tear or any other prefered is good
I’m new to the game so using magic type abilities seemed quite overwhelming. I have just been jump attacking everything and it’s been working a treat.
At what stage would you recommend starting to add faith and abilities to the mix?
I would get max 25 Faith for Golden Vow, that and Flame Grant Me Strength are Buff Incantations giving you more damage and damage reduction. Most incantations are a lot simpler than Intelligence sorceries.
If you want to start with something simple, Catch Flame, sold by Corhyn in the RTH sells it. It just swings a little flame that actually is one of the best Incantations in the whole game.
And if you like jump attacking, definitely use Claw Talisman and Raptor's Black Feathers Chest armor
Also if you do want to dip into Faith, Ordovis's Greatsword is REALLY REALLY fun with its Ash of War
get claw talisman, jumping l1’s are gonna turn into your bread and butter if you stick with it. for now get vigor pumped to 30-40 then go for endurance til 25 if you already have the requirements for weapons. the contribution from stats will not be as important as weapon upgrades for now.
if you get bloody slash you can put bleed on one, then another damage or status type on another if you find ashes of war that allow it (until you get better whetstones, when you get the magic one use frostbite on the other side.
having two greatswords with different status build ups early on will be very good for bosses, don’t worry so much about the scaling until you’re higher level with like 40 strength.
As long as you have the str minimums, vigor and endurance will be your big ones. Vigor will be next, there are talismans to help with your stamina. Just make sure your equip load doesn't go higher than medium, since rolling will be your primary defense option.
Currently my endurance is definitely a little low as I have been using the great-jars arsenal talisman to get extra weight load.
I will start to level this more moving forward. How viable is a strength dual wield build late game?
It's a perfectly fine build pve, your bigger issue is going to be weapon upgrade materials until endgame. Usually when I dual wield I have a somber and a standard weapon, that way they're not competing with one another.
Super viable and super fun! Jump L1 does a ton of damage and stagger in one hit.
As you progress into mid and late game, you can add some faith for buffs and continue playing the same, and plenty of swords to scale with faith.
Vigor and Endurance are most important early on. I would also look into stronger Greatswords going forward. Iron Greatsword is the strongest, but it's a nightmare to farm. There's also the Gargoyle Greatsword that you get off a mid game boss and Banished Knight Greatsword that's a more reasonable farm.
Cold affinity would be my recommendation. Throw Chilling Mist on the left one whenever you need some extra oomph and Storm Blade on the right one for whenever you need a ranged option. Cragblade on both is also solid.
Strength will be your primary damage stat, so if a boss is immune to frostbite, you can swap to Heavy affinity and still kick ass
Talismans I'd recommend are Turtle Talisman, Claw Talisman, Erdtree Favor+2, and a flex spot. Great Jarsenal, Ritual Sword/Shield, and any of the big defensive talismans like Dragoncrest Greatshield are good options.
Thats perfect I was curious about future swords, everyone seems to recommend the moon sword but I won’t have the intelligence for that so those are handy recommendations.
Seems endurance will be my next stat to level
Banished Knight GS can be farmed easily at dragon church in caelid and gets the highest strength scaling in it's class on heavy infusion. I had a great time dual wielding these for almost a whole playthrough.
People seem to want to gatekeep their PvP builds, so I guess it’s time to start trying to understand what needs to go into building for PvP.
I understand it’s about balancing survival with damage, but I don’t know how to pick the combination of heavy/medium/light, what sets would be best for my class/subclass/play style, what kind of weapons to use, what abilities are best for damage in a PvP environment… it all feels so intimidating. Any help understanding would be appreciated.
I'd check out this website:
I'm surprised you find builds hidden behind gates) I think there's a lot of easy access to really good builds, or something to start with and adapt.
There's also a set tier list on there that gives you some ideas on what is popular.
That's a good site
yeah, 2 patches ago lol
Heavy chest then either 511 or a mix of light and med, depending on what passives you want.
Healing. Be able to keep up your heals, ideally a hot - vigor and then maybe a burst heal.
Defence. 25k+ resistances ideally 30+, keep up your buffs. 30k hp.
Sustain. The sustain mundus is usually enough if you need it. Keep a stack of tri pots equipped if you need.
Damage a front bar damage set and weapon/spell damage glyphs should be enough
Sets really doesn't matter. Good staple build is trainee chest a monster set a front bar damage set and then a back bar set with a mythic.
In PvP you need to manage your buffs sustain and spacial awareness. Knowing where to kite and when to attack is important.
Forgive my ignorance but why a trainee chest?
It's not set in stone, but a common setup is this:
front bar set for damage, say weapons, legs, hands, feet which takes 5 slots, then you have a monster set, then your second set, usually defence or sustain you'd have waist, 2 rings, and backbar weapon. That leaves you a necklace for the mythic of the month and a chest spot, and the Bis one piece is heavy trainee reinforced!
You can obviously move pieces around if your mythic is a ring.
Waist spot ideally wants to be light.
Legs ideally reinforced heavy.
Only reason I can see is it has a 1pc max health bonus, helping us get that max health up to avoid being spiked.
To continue, you need burst as well to 100 to 0 someone. I like clever alchemist and balorghs for this.
Oakensoul is great if you don’t want to constantly micromanage your buffs
Aim for 9 or 11k aim pen
What are you trying to do? That's the real question.
I’ve always wanted to try a great shield build, using a decent sword or spear to attack from relative safety, but I can never seem to get it right.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for which stats I need to prioritise (I’m guessing endurance), and what else I need to consider to make this a good build that will work well?
My character is level 250 and going through the DLC, so plenty of stat points to play with if I should lean into other areas like faith.
Any recommendations for weapons are welcome too. I was potentially looking at the Erdtree Shield and Guardian Swordspear, but this may not be optimal.
So, shields work best when paired with a spear or thrusting sword (heavy variety works for these too). This allows you to hold block and safely poke with r1 while blocking. However, feel free to pair it with whatever weapon you desire. The Black Knight Great Hammer was made for block counter playstyle, so pairs with a shield well for example.
Shield centric builds rely heavily on endurance/stamina mitigation, so talismans that help with that are very beneficial. Otherwise, most shields require strength to wield, so strength and endurance are your two main stats (normally).
When it comes to shields, besides their actual defensive stats, guard boost is incredibly important. The higher that number, the less stamina it drains when you block an attack.
Then, there are special shields that can do more than just block. The one in your picture is a fine example, as it has golden retaliation on it, which this one is slightly modified but still a parry skill. There are others that shoot projectiles as well. However, if you're looking for cut and dry "just block", make sure that the AoW on the shield is "no skill". This will allow for your AoW in your right hand to be used.
Hi this is my build completely made around "Multilayered Ring of Light". Every item and stat breakpoint is chosen just to improve this one spell.
Gear
So first off we need 2x "Dryleaf Seal" these increase the damage of our one spell by 15% each which stacks multiplicatively ending up at 32.25%. On top of these we also have "Circlet of Light" as the helm which increases our spell by an additional 10% adding up to 45.475% increase in damage just from these 3 items.
Talismans
"Godfrey Icon" increases our damage by an additional 15%, because the only spell the build uses counts as a charge spell.
"Flock's Canvas Talisman" is another damage increase giving an addional 8%.
After these 2 talismans it comes down more to personal preferance, as you will need to decide between damage or utility.
Optional Talismans
For damage you would want the "Sacred Scorpion Charm" which increases holy damage by 12%, but it also increases your physical damage taken by 10%.
Also for more damage you could round out with "Faithful's Canvas Talisman" which increases our damage by 4%
For utility "Radagon Icon" gives 30 virtual dexterity toward casting speed. I personally run this as I feel like the long casting time makes to hard to punish at times.
Also for utility I like to run "Two-Headed Turtle Talisman" which increases stamina regeneration by 22.5%, I feel like it makes a big difference in dodging attacks in the DLC especially.
Stats
Starting class Prophet. Here are the stats at different levels. If the space is blank it means no points where put toward the skill at all.
Just as a disclamer always think about the FP breakpoint when putting points toward mind. You get a new cast at 15,19,24,28,32 and 36. I wouldn't recommend going above 36 as a +12 flask can only fill up to that breakpoint.
Points toward endurance and dexterity are more of a preference than actually needed. I only have 10 endurance to equip specific items, you could leave it at 8 or go up to 25 if you want. As for dexterity getting 40 gives you the fastest casting speed possible while wearing "Radagon Icon" which is why I put points toward it later on. The casting speed difference isn't huge so you can allocate them elsewhere if you want.
Crystal Tear
"Holy-Shrouding Cracked Tear" increases our damage by another 20% for 3 minutes.
"Bloodsucking Cracked Tear" increases our damage by once again 20%, but it also drains your health for 3 minute duration.
"Opaline Hardtear" reduces damage taken by 15% for 3 minutes.
"Faith-knot Crystal Tear" increases faith by 10 for 3 minutes. This is more of a early game one when faith scaling is still more than the percentile based buffs.
"Winged Crystal Tear" increases maximum equip load by 450% for 3 minutes. Our build already has very high damage so most if not all bosses will die in the 3 minute window this is active. If you like wearing heavier armour it might be worth running this instead of putting a ton of points toward endurance.
"Opaline Bubbletear" reduces damage taken by 90% for 3 minutes or UNTIL HIT. This is a good way to prevent dying in a single attack if you happen to be low on scadutree fragments for example.
I feel like"Holy-Shrouding Cracked Tear" is the only must-have tear upgrade everything else is preferance. I personally run "Opaline Hardtear" in the second slot.
Buffs
I'm quite lazy about buffing so I rarely use them, but here is a list of useful ones that are easy to run if you want to. Buffs from the same category don't stack with each other which is why I list what type of buffs they are in parenthesis.
"Golden Vow" 15% damage and 10% damage negation. (Aura)
"Boiled Crab" 20% physical damage negation. (Body) This is a consumable, but very easy to get.
"Howl of Shabriri" 25% damage 30% damage TAKEN. (Body) Great damage buff with "Sacred Scorpion Charm", but beware you might die in one hit a lot.
"Black Falme's Protection", "Barrier of Gold", "Flame, Protect Me", "Golden Lightning Fortification", "Lord's Divine Fortification" and "Protection of the Erdtreee". (Body) These are all different types of damage reductions. If a fight has a ton of fire damage for example running "Flame, Protect Me" would help a lot.
Thanks
Thanks for reading about my build, hope you give it a try! I usually don't play faith builds, but I feel in love with the animation of "Multilayered Ring of Light" and wanted to make a build around it. Even without running most of the damage buffs this build does A LOT of damage, it also deals a suprising amount of poise damage. I've managed to stagger a lot of bosses with "Multilayered Ring of Light" that I never did while using melee.
PS: Use something else for NPC fights.
I've been experimenting with a Miquella build lately too. It's very high damage and fun to throw out thousands of damage in the base game with Discus of Light. I use the Golden Order Seal with Dryleaf in the offhand.
The only thing I'll add to yours is using the skill on the Sword of Light to buff holy damage by another 20%. It stacks with Golden Vow.
Was thinking doing a Miquella build now. My fth char just beat Radagon and got the circlet, and I got the dryleaf talisman. Could Leda's weapon be good if I want to mix in some melee? And go dex/fth, getting increased cast rate as well
Yea Leda's Sword should work really well. Depending on your level you might wanna go with 60 faith (or 59 with Circlet of Light) so you get a bit more dexterity/endurance.
Especially with some of the really fast DLC bosses a good melee weapon will make the fights a lot more enjoyable. Using only "Multilayered Ring of Light" against Consort Radahn was a real pain.
I used only the multilayered ring of light against consort radahn too and it worked very well. Maybe its rng If it works well
Damn yeah that sounds like pain indeed. I had to use the aeonia scarlet rot thing to beat him. Used mimic and tried to bait him with it so I could sneak it in but it was really hard because he moves around so much in phase 2. Without it I would just die cause no way Im gonna survive his insane attacks while chipping away his hp with just my slow greatsword (Maliketh's blade). Really hard boss

Sounds fun for elden beast
Yea Elden Beast would take a while. Although with the damage buffs I think you can still kill him with "Multilayered Ring of Light", it would just take about 30 casts.
That's not even that bad, cool build may the light of Miquella guide you
just use pest thread spears on elden beast if you re gonna do it after dlc lol. on 80 faith 4 casts oneshot it.
Does it work with rotten winged insigna of milicent prosthesis ?
Thanks although I since finished the dlc and moved to BG3 :)
I love full str, and lion claw is just so good. It carried me through half of the bosses
Sadly got to go for boink.
Personnal favorite, Blasphemous Blade X/Faith build.
Can you share that build please
I didnt impose a level cap on my main, so not sure my build will suit you
a simple Long sword and a great shield. Square off carried me.
Bubble gang for life
Bubble gang rise UP !
The best PvE build is "whatever works for you".
I personally go full strength, using swords like Blasphemous Blade and Maliketh's Black Blade. I also work my way up to heavy armor and a high defense shield for those times I get a little greedy/careless.
I did a faith build for my first play through so going into new game plus I want to have something you guys consider fun. I was leaning towards a frost build but havent set my heart on anything yet and am just looking for suggestions right now. What builds are you guys loving? Ill take any suggestions, thank you!
Really fun build is a spell blade. Carian slicer, Adulla moon blade, Gavel of Haima, Carian grandeur and the moonlight greatsword in your left and. Really strong build but using meele magic is sick af.
If you're on pc you can dupe your character and have many different builds. Honestly there's so many cool weapons. I'm currently doing a fire build and I'm having a blast
Necroing ya cuz I’m lazy and feel like it, I got faith in your reply for some reason lol. You land on something you loved? I beat the game with blasphemous blade and would like to try to the expan with something a lil less cheese.
Lol ya i actually did. I really enjoyed the bloodfiends arm and the martial arts
Nice haha. Have heard good things about both and will surely try both. I fired it up earlier today for the first time with Erdtree installed but I didn’t go anywhere yet. Hadn’t yet decided if I was gonna start the expansion as is or burn a larval and respec first.
Used dual wield great hammers with 60 strength and 45ish faith for when incantations are useful (not often vs. bosses lol). Break stance and crit often and do big damage. Bosses with high poise can be a bit tough at times but feels good to learn the move sets and find those windows to punish. Made it through everything with the build and I'm at the final boss now grinding.
So I’ve cleared the game twice now but haven’t braved NG+ yet, but I know enemy placements and drops and even new spells and such come into play once you go into NG+. My issue is that I’m having a hard time figuring out what a good build for NG+ could be for my play style and was wondering what were some of the community’s favorite high soul level builds are? For PvE, I prefer making builds sound that so I’m more curious there.
For info on my experience and play style, I finished the game with a lightning claymore into Drakeblood Greatsword, then with greatsword into fume ultra Greatsword. I’ve been doing my current run with a spear and some magic and buffing, and recently switched to try out power stance hammers.
Generally I like weapons with good length and poise damage, and while I liked the ultra sword run I usually prefer more medium weight/speed weapons, especially with the brutal stamina management in this game.
For equipment I’m a big fan of the Flynn ring but I see the down sides especially in harder areas and with weaker armor. I also love the old iron crown so I can have buffs and heals on demand, especially since I eventually almost always get 30/30 int/fth for repair and heals and some hexes.
I know almost anything is viable and could work but I do like seeing good damage and am curious what everyone else has run with and enjoyed! :)
Honestly I don’t know much about which weapons are “best” all I know is the broken Santier’s Spear has probably my favorite moveset in all of souls games and I find it incredibly fun to play and I know it’s a good pve weapon.
Oooo I do really love that one actually. The only problem is 0 scaling so I’m worried about it not doing as well in higher levels? I’m not sure if the base damage or infusion or buffing is enough
You might be right about the scaling. I just raw infused it and used it up even through MG 2+ but I’m sure there are plenty of weapons with much better scaling into NG+
iirc I think I also just liked being able to dump a bunch of stats into magic because I didn’t need them for scaling.
You might check out the YouTuber “Yazmania.” He’s demoed loads of weapons and is a fun watch. Could be a source of inspiration.
Thanks I’ll check it out!
Miracle casting is terrible until NG+ and then gets really strong once you have the crown of the old iron king, dragon chime, and a lot of levels.
Following the Best PvE equipment and stat progression document keeps you optimal way past NG++, my favorite NG+ builds are really still just my favorite NG builds.
Bleed is tremendously overpowered. Samurai starts with the Uchikatana, you can get a second early and basically use those the entire game be just fine.
But almost all weapons and builds are viable in PvE. Starting class is mainly just, “do I wanna use spells early and often or be a tanky dude, a hybrid, etc”
Just go with whoever’s stats you like the best and their starter weapon is something you enjoy. You can respec fairly early and you get about 15 respecs in a run so I wouldn’t focus tooooo hard on early choices cause you can change them as you go
Sorceries/moonveil katana really makes things "easy"
Bleed/ice range attack.
Best for what? A good time? Being the most OP?
The most OP
Probably dex for melee or int for magic. At 100 on a melee dex build you’d probably want 50 dex, 30 vig, 20 end. That leaves you with 10 extra points for whatever. Maybe you’ll want more points in health if you’re Getting wrecked, maybe more stamina to get more hits/rolls, maybe some points in str for a weapon you wanna use. There’s no level cap for pve and I’m basing this on a wretch build that starts lvl 1. But I think my recommendation is a good start.
If you plan on co-Op. the current meta stands between 150-190ish. Anything above that and you’re soling the game unless you reach out to forums and such.
If you don’t care, any build works. Just need patience.
At 150-190 anything even resembling a build can absolutely destroy the whole game.
Maybe, but there are still a lot of summons to go around in that range. 200+ destroys the game for sure. Nobody cooping on the daily at 200+. 150-190 seems to be the sweet spot.
Google just use whatever you want you can literally beat this game naked and unarmed
I’ve never seen so many video “ can you beat Elden Ring just using …..”
Does anyone have any suggestions or advice for pvp builds that are balanced 50/50 between survivability and damage?
could try a mage build mages aren't usually targeted in pvp and if you have a firestaff/icgauntlet combo you can start pumping numbers plus its meta enough to where its needed in wars
if you wanted more survivability perks to use are enchanted ward and or conditioning perks
Medium Sns hatchet w tumblers as the armor artifact is a good middle ground build, and takes basically minimal skill
