TL;DR
Popular PvP Level Brackets
In Elden Ring PvP, level brackets play a significant role in matchmaking. The most popular brackets are RL 125, 139, and 150 [5:1]. These levels allow players to match with a wide range of opponents, ensuring active PvP encounters. It's important to stay within these brackets to maximize your chances of finding matches.
Build Types and Strategies
For effective PvP builds, balancing damage output with survivability is crucial. Common setups include using a front bar set for damage and a back bar set for defense or sustain [4:3]. Weapons with range advantages, such as spears and halberds, are recommended due to their ability to outspace opponents and stagger potential
[3:6]. Additionally, successive attack builds with dexterity weapons can be very powerful
[3:9].
Weapons and Equipment
Choosing the right weapons and equipment is key to a successful PvP build. Vyke's war spears are noted for their thrusting attacks and pierce damage, which are strong in PvP [3:4]. For those who prefer melee combat, greatswords and heavier weapons require careful timing and spacing to counter experienced players
[5:2]. Using bows and crossbows can also provide strategic advantages, especially when equipped with explosive bolts
[1:12].
Community Resources and Guides
To further refine your PvP skills, consider watching guides and tutorials from experienced players. ChaseTheBro's YouTube channel offers a wide array of Elden Ring PvP videos covering various setups and strategies [2:1]. Rust Buckets' guide on spacing is also recommended for learning how to effectively strafe, trade, and counter-attack
[5:3].
PvP Etiquette and Experience
Understanding PvP etiquette can enhance your experience. While some players prioritize fair fights, others may use any means necessary to win [1:4]
[1:5]. Practicing dodging and countering spam attacks is essential, as these tactics are common in invasions
[5:6]. Ultimately, having fun and experimenting with different builds will help you find what works best for you.
Really enjoying the game so far, but seem completely out matched in PvP. Not sure if the build I am doing is just not good or if I just don't have the knowledge yet. So I have some questions if anyone can answer some or all of them that would be great, I want to get gud.
And honestly if you have any other tips I would appreciate them. Again really enjoying the game, but the PvP is a bit of a chore when it seems like I have no chance of winning again anyone
Edit: would probably be helpful if Included my build...

Bow of the Convert (Poison, Bleed, and Fire Arrows)
Lightest Armour I can find
Spam block to parry attack spam. Ez win.
Eh.. that doesn’t work for some builds. I dual wield two swords, and have the smallest parry window. Spamming doesn’t work. I have to be very deliberate, and time the block perfectly to properly parry. If you’re dual wielding fist weapons, you have the largest parry window. That tactic may work for those, and other builds… but not all.
I dual light reapers. It's really easy to parry.. parring in this game is a joke a 3 year old could do it.
Most people doing invasions are going to be maxed if not close to it. The game attempts to scale them down to create an even playing field… but they are still going to have superior armor and weapons, and more game time logged to understand the nuances of combat within the game… I need to make that video. I’ve been saying I’m going to make a video about advanced combat for beginners, where I would go over all of the subtleties of the fighting mechanics that don’t become apparent until many hours of gameplay. Your bow build is going to be OP. Bows and crossbows are pretty overpowered in this game. If I do an invade, I want a fair duel. I usually match the tactics of my opponent, and don’t use a lot of casting and such unless they do so first. Bows are an exception. If the player is using a bow or crossbow, I’m forced to use whatever tactics I can just to close the distance…. Many invaders aren’t like me. They will throw everything they have at you from the jump. So a mixture of all of that is what’s likely going on. I would just play solo or co-op until your build is finalized, and you’re comfortable with the fight mechanics you’ve chosen. If someone invades you, of course try to win. The only downside is you’d have to go collect your vigor if you don’t… A lot of people will force quit the game if they’re being invaded. Don’t be that guy 😉
So just wondering.. I just started like two weeks ago and am no beginner to souls like. I beat the game a couple times already and have good gear. I’ve been joining and helping people and seem to already be better than most in PvP that I face or join… I guess what I’m wondering is if the etiquette is different than other games? If this one’s a little more raw..
I used to invade a lot in souls games but always was the same way as you. Using different weapons for fun or just matching energy to have fun fights. But i feel like half the time I would get invaded people did the same shit and bowed back n fourth then had a nice duel.. even if I invaded two dudes usually I’d fight the protector before the host. Or if I’m the host let my friend fight then let the dude heal up if he killed him..
Does that shit just not exist in this game?
Edit: I also wanted to add being attacked by the red dude while you’re in PvP is kind of dumb. Most of the duels I’ve lost while being invaded are just from them running from me until my timer goes up then I’m being attacked and lose my ability to heal and they try to get the cheese for the win… is there any counter to that other than hunt the bastard down
It’s just your sanguinarix that won’t work if the reaper shows up. Heavenly vials still work if you have those, or radiant magic heals work. Also brio stones work. It just affects the sanguinarix. As far as etiquette… If I invade, I always allow the host to clear out any enemies, and I wave to let them know I’m just lookin for a fair fight. Some will try to attack while I’m waving, and I’ll roll out of it, and that kind of sets the tone. I do come across other players like me, but I come across a lot of players that don’t care about that. They will use any cheese they possibly can. Usually it doesn’t work against my main character, lol.. but many try. I still attempt to have a duel. To me, that’s a lot more fun than just spamming a spell, then landing a critical hit when their posture is broken. I would say it’s like 70/30. 30% of the time, I run into other players like me.
Oh, I meant to answer a question for the OP, but forgot. Addressing the question about getting caught in attack animations. The combat in this game has to be somewhat deliberate. When I attack, I make sure not to keep pressing the attack button. If you do, you will get locked into the animation until the full attack is finished. I’ll press attack once, then wait for that animation to nearly finish before I decide to press attack again, or if I need to evade or roll out of a situation. If you press the attack buttons too quickly, your player will automatically go into the next attack after the first one finishes, sometimes leaving you unable to evade an incoming attack.
This game is just awful for PVP, if you're going to do it don't expect fair, balanced or interesting gameplay.
You play They come You get a few seconds to prepare They attack You be ready to fight like hell or you die. No coming back from the dead in the umbral.
That goes for the invader, the host does have 2 lives if not yet in umbral
I would like to get into Elden Ring pvp, does anyone have any build recommendations that are pvp beginner friendly and fun to play. I am mediocre at elden ring (160h no dlc yet and 100h nightreign). You can use links to video's or websites or whatever, I've already looked at the wiki, but I woud just like recommendations cuz I don't know what ts is about.
I've got many hours of pvp experience with invasions in many different level brackets. I'd be happy to help you craft a build and play style suited for pvp, just message me
I actually just picked ER back up (500h for my original play through + DLC) with the hopes of getting into PVP this time.
I can’t explain it, ER is my happy place. After playing a handful of games post-ER, nothing could fill the void, so I started a new character a few days ago.
Questions for y’all -
is ER PVP still active and thriving? I’m attracted more to “real world PVP” like invasions or playing with the taunters tongue active, rather than arena dueling
What rune level has the most amount of active players?
What console is best for PVP community longevity? My 500h were on PS5 but I read that PC has the best longevity (although I believe PC is more open to cheaters which is off-putting)
Thanks in advance!
Do your thing and youll get there man. Honestly it may be trash advice but thats the only one ive got, youll have to experience any build you use against your opponent. Might as well be something you're used to and that you can still twick.
https://m.youtube.com/results?sp=mAEA&search_query=chasethebro Chase is making elden ring pvp videos from the release date until now. Every setup, build or weapon combination that you can think about is on his channel. You can learn a lot from him.
I'm lvl 322, far into ng+, love pvp, still feel like my pve style is somehow out of touch with pvp. I have massive stats, capable of alot at this point, just having a hard time putting it all together. Not into bleed builds BTW, work fine in game but pvp feels like 100% result with 1% effort. Any suggestions welcome!
It’s unclear what you’re actually asking for.
At 300+ you can just whip out anything and give it a try until you find something you like.
You are in a completely different pvp field at that level. You match with anyone 301-713, so everyone has everything.
If you want a different style of pvp with more focus necessary on build, you probably want to make a new character and play in the 150 range. It’s a level most players get to with one play through and can reach quick enough to build and has a reasonable limitation on how maxed out anything can be.
I was looking for suggestions on build types because my I see so many players with.....such specific and powerful builds. It's impressive. In pve I can just kind of do whatever I want and fight, but in pvp it seems a very specific thought out build is the only way. Especially at high level. I was hoping someone could talk about their specific high level build and give me some pointers
At your level you can dual wield Vyke’s war spears. Thrusting attacks and pierce damage are very strong in a fight, especially with the spear talisman. “Counter attacks” isn’t just the special after a block, it’s any hit mid enemy attack motion. And madness is a specific anti-player status effect.
It's because 300+, you don't really have a build; you have basically unrestricted access to everything and hit most if not all softcaps. That means in pvp, everyone's just going to use the same weapons, gear, and strategies. With an actual build, there's a focus in creating a playstyle that's effective and will generally carry you through multiple NG cycles because no one needs to go beyond 150-160, but you can definitely make later NG cycles easier by doing so.
You should make a new character and stick between like 120-160 if you want to pvp.
If you’re over lvl 301 you are matched with players up to max level. There’s no build variety at that point; everyone can use everything. Which might be your thing, it’s fine, but most people don’t think that’s interesting.
Most people who are more involved in the pvp community plays at lvl 125-150, which is coincidentally around the lvl people end at when they finish a playthrough, so there’s a lot of activity around this lvl
Because they have a range advantage against other weapons you can outspace your opponents. Plus the stagger potential on the halberds is very good
One of the halberds , offhand dagger , something to shoot phantoms running away and you'll be OK
PvP is around level 150, the best PvP is at level 50 I think. I have multiple character level 50, 100 and 150 just to do PvP, I don't only play with one character i like to test new build and not to be overskilled
I think you might be too overlevelled for most PvP
Successive attack builds are insane with certain dex weapons. Recently been playing with a basic sword and shield build and it’s been one of my fav play throughs so far.
I would start a new character and go and collect all the weapons and items for a start
You might want to go into NG+ and collect two of everything
Stop levelling up I would say between RL100-120
spears and halberds will win you more invasions than not but you'll still be going up against 2-3 people so you sometimes have to be nasty to win
I just used the sword that the gordrick soldiers use and banish night black and white shield. Sorry I don’t know the names off the top of my head. I just wanted a basic ass knight build to kinda challenge myself. I wanted to learn parrying i thought it was going to be a challenge don’t get me wrong it still is but parrying is so fun once you get the timing. I also use the dagger with the 140 critical damage whenever they stagger to get some really good damage.
Most people dont bother levelling up that high since a viable build is complete much earlier
People seem to want to gatekeep their PvP builds, so I guess it’s time to start trying to understand what needs to go into building for PvP.
I understand it’s about balancing survival with damage, but I don’t know how to pick the combination of heavy/medium/light, what sets would be best for my class/subclass/play style, what kind of weapons to use, what abilities are best for damage in a PvP environment… it all feels so intimidating. Any help understanding would be appreciated.
I'd check out this website:
I'm surprised you find builds hidden behind gates) I think there's a lot of easy access to really good builds, or something to start with and adapt.
There's also a set tier list on there that gives you some ideas on what is popular.
That's a good site
yeah, 2 patches ago lol
Heavy chest then either 511 or a mix of light and med, depending on what passives you want.
Healing. Be able to keep up your heals, ideally a hot - vigor and then maybe a burst heal.
Defence. 25k+ resistances ideally 30+, keep up your buffs. 30k hp.
Sustain. The sustain mundus is usually enough if you need it. Keep a stack of tri pots equipped if you need.
Damage a front bar damage set and weapon/spell damage glyphs should be enough
Sets really doesn't matter. Good staple build is trainee chest a monster set a front bar damage set and then a back bar set with a mythic.
In PvP you need to manage your buffs sustain and spacial awareness. Knowing where to kite and when to attack is important.
Forgive my ignorance but why a trainee chest?
It's not set in stone, but a common setup is this:
front bar set for damage, say weapons, legs, hands, feet which takes 5 slots, then you have a monster set, then your second set, usually defence or sustain you'd have waist, 2 rings, and backbar weapon. That leaves you a necklace for the mythic of the month and a chest spot, and the Bis one piece is heavy trainee reinforced!
You can obviously move pieces around if your mythic is a ring.
Waist spot ideally wants to be light.
Legs ideally reinforced heavy.
Only reason I can see is it has a 1pc max health bonus, helping us get that max health up to avoid being spiked.
To continue, you need burst as well to 100 to 0 someone. I like clever alchemist and balorghs for this.
Oakensoul is great if you don’t want to constantly micromanage your buffs
Aim for 9 or 11k aim pen
What are you trying to do? That's the real question.
Hi! Been really wanting to get into elden ring pvp this summer, and maybe dabble in invasions. Can I please get some helpful tips? Literally anything at all!
Also: Is there a recommended level for pvp? Or does it not matter?
My current build is a Strength/Faith build, about 48 points into each. I use a Gargoyle Greatsword and scaled it to mostly faith. I medium roll cause I try to run that black fat armor, but am considering going to light rolling if possible.
If youre on PC, Just look out for cheaters.
Personally I prefer taunters tongues for pvp as I have seen more fun/non-meta builds around and about compared to arena fights however arena gets more fights more often so I'd recommend that as a starter getting into it.
I'd also heavily recommend watching some guides online looking at combos and spacing, especially if youre looking to run greatswords or heavier weapons as any experienced players will run absolute rings around you to begin with.
Most of all though is just have fun :) Elden Ring is my favorite PVP game so its good to see more players coming into it!
Edit: by fun and non meta i mean i tend to see more creative builds in invasion pvp (This may not be the same experience for you however)
If you prefer melee based— anything level 40 and under is peak
60 is the lowest tiered meta js
You want tips from the best checkout Rust Buckets guide on Spacing
Since PvP is practically a turn-based game learning when to strafe, trade, and counter-attack properly is 1/2 the battle
Even on Xbox tons of cheaters they’ve 700 levels vs level 50 players and way too many heals and hp even at that level or the game just doesn’t work with matching levels anymore
I don’t know wot you’re on about, I invade level 30 and 40 everyday and never encountered “max level” hosts— only summons. The challenge of taking down a max level at a low level is partially why I do it tbh— it’s definitely achievable and pretty fun imo, ngl
PvP in FromSoftware games is broken up into level brackets, meaning level cutoff points where, if you go too far past it, you won’t be able to matchmake with people at that level.
Example: RL 139. 139 is a popular level bracket because it can match with people down to RL 125 (prob the most popular dueling level bracket) and up to RL 150 (a common upper cutoff point for most people’s hybrid builds, such as your STR/FTH build). If your main interest is activity, then 125/139/150 are the best brackets because these tend to be the most popular for the reasons listed above.
For invasions, I personally have two characters. One at RL 60 with +12/+5 weapons (this is important. If you’re making a lower level character, keep in mind matchmaking looks at BOTH your level and the upgrade level of your weapon. If you’re level 60 with max weapons, you prob won’t get any matches at all because nobody else is likely to have max weapons by level 60). My other invasion character is at RL 175 with max weapons (175 isn’t exactly a matchmaking breakpoint, I just picked it so I could run a STR/ARC build and use the Bayle incantations because they’re fun lol).
So yeah, just pick a level bracket you have fun with (the higher up you go, the more likely you are to see busted shit so keep that in mind) and make sure your weapon upgrade levels match that bracket
Just a tiny nitpick but for a long time the wiki summon calculator had a rounding error, so many people have the idea that 138 is the ideal meta level, but it’s actually 139. 139 matches from 125 to 151, and 138 matches 124 to 150. Kinda a missed level to go for 138
Yeah I thought I might’ve heard that around somewhere, but I wasn’t too sure so I just went with 138 just in case. Thank you for clarifying! Changed 138 to 139 in the original comment
You need to get good at dodging spam if your doing invasions as it's very, very common I practiced by doing arena with my mate and got him to spam ancient death rancor and sacred rings of lights
First off a bow, then, praise the battle!
Does anyone have any suggestions or advice for pvp builds that are balanced 50/50 between survivability and damage?
could try a mage build mages aren't usually targeted in pvp and if you have a firestaff/icgauntlet combo you can start pumping numbers plus its meta enough to where its needed in wars
if you wanted more survivability perks to use are enchanted ward and or conditioning perks
Medium Sns hatchet w tumblers as the armor artifact is a good middle ground build, and takes basically minimal skill
I’m addicted to this game and addicted to creating new builds and replicating amazing builds I see I find online. I’ve played so many. Just curious what do you guys think is the most all around good build against all? Cheese builds, magic, idc; just give me your best builds.
Also what do you think does best against Mages?
TLDR: asking the community about best builds, thanks.
My fallingstar beast jaw build is good against mages. Mh jaw, oh turtle shield with holy ground and cold katar with cragblade on a lv 125 34 str/34 dex/20 int build. Use gravity bolt if they go for spells. If they run, just pop holy ground until they stop being so passive. If they get low, you can easily chase em down with katar.
My most successful build is my meteoric ore spellblade, which I posted a video of earlier today.
Why Craigblade on your Katar? It's not like that will help you chase down low HP players anyway, and the extra damage would be moot, right?
PS coded is the best ladder legal build in the game hands down.
Thanks for all the builds guys. I tried so many lately, having a blast. Right now I’m trying to make a solid death sorcerer build. Almost there.
I hate to break it to you but that’s almost the worst possible build. Death blight is really really bad. I’m a big fan and run it as a meme build, but it’s super duper bad.

I feel like dual large clubs are the greatest thing in the game
Yeah I think dual flails are better. That setup is breath broken though so I wouldn’t use
Against mages? Faith build with barrier of gold. Completely shuts down mages, though some would say it’s a little overtuned with the magic damage negation because it pretty much invalidates magic damage.
For dueling/pvp, I usually prefer a str/int build with min int for weapons, 60 str and 60 vigor, min mind and the rest into endurance. Weapons cold infused and all talismans going to health or stamina, sometimes one for more damage. This is a strong meta build using lots of different weapons from greatswords to great spears and collosal swords.
Really any build can be good, just be mindful of where you put your stats and what you actually need. For instance i feel comfortable with 11 mind on a melee build but some people might want 20 because they use an aow that takes a lot of fp.
These day, mages basically have to slot either those rock or the fire sorceries so they don’t get shut down by BoG.
The magma ones are okay, pretty slow and telegraphed, the rocks don’t do much dmg and your average duelist is probably eating crab or has decent armor.
you really don't need all that mind unless you're spamming ashes. default 9-12 mind is just fine. reallocate elsewhere.
btw what pvp are we talking about? because I'm still pretty certain 125-150 is the right range for duels and invasions (invasions have varied activity and can be more common at lower levels ie lvl25 or lvl80). it makes little sense to go past that level range as you're going to run into players who aren't constrained by build choice. giving them more options for spam and stuff you can't counter with your weapon choice.
Addtionally:
Swap out your Axe tali for Retaliatory Crossed-Tree. If you use the rolling/crouch attack often this boosts the damage. You can abuse your hyper armor often so you can swap off when needed from Bullgoats. Throw like Two-Headed Turtle on since Colossals waste a lot of stamina. Again, as needed depending on your opponent.
Also can squeeze more stats out if you didnt have so much into END. 50 is a bit much where 30+ can get the job done with experience.
STR should be 60. Arcane you dont get much change in proc time past 40.
Add Sacred Bloody Flesh to your consumables. Raises your Arcane by 10, 7% atk buff, 18% add after blood loss. Its actually insane.
go to 70 Arc min str/dex, infuse to occult, get rid of sacred dagger replace w misrecord, get at least 90 poise
seems like youre gunnin for one shots, put on royal knights resolve on blood fiends arm.
“nit picky” but keep your satchel (bottom d pad item bar) relatively clean. No multiplayer items, only utilities and such
and not that its totally possible atp but dont go higher than RL 169 imo, you wont go to far above RL 200 as far as your invadees. Keeps things more tame
You bet. I’ve found some strategies to find matches quicker too. And as per your previous message, you’re saying invest in 70 arcane? And what’s the difference between bleed and occult?
Axe tali highly unnecessary here. The odds you hit someone with a charged heavy vs an uncharged heavy are exponentially lower and for not that much reward compared to pve where stance dmg matters. You could drop it for whatever you want really: erdtree favor +2 is always a good one, or shard of alexander. Bloodfiend’s Arm is one of the few weapons where RKR still actually rules as it allows it to absolutely punch through shields and brings the damage up to 1 shot levels. I’d say since you’re not really casting you could afford to lose some mind - there’s not really a good reason for you to have more than like 15-18 here even at level 180. Redistribute those to other stats as needed. You also have a bunch more endurance than you’re making use of here. If your fashion can bear it, switch out the night’s cavalry armor for something with better negations. That dmg negation can be a deciding factor in the dynamic of a fight: you win trades or lose them based on how much dmg you take in return.
54 str.
Why 25 FP? Take those points out and put them into arcane.
Is that the only weapon you plan to use? Do you ever change your armor during PvP?
If you don't swap armor and you don't swap to a heavier weapon, I think you might change some of your endurance points for something else, e.g., strength or arcane.
Or you could instead choose some heavier armor for more protection. Just remember that you can go up to 70% of your max equip load and you're good to go
Thanks!
I would experiment with more blood oath incantations since you have the stat requirements to cast all of them. Beastial incantations are great damage too with the dragon seal’s high scaling
Thanks! Any suggestions? Like nasty op invantations?))
For sure! I suggest having swarm of flies and blood boon after since they combo into one another (you can mix up flies then approaching or flies into more flies then boon to catch opponents as they run) and similarly, Beastial sling and beast claw because they also combo but have different timings so it’s hard for an opponent to react to
How optimal are you trying to be? That’s the real question. If your answer is maximum sweat, then there’s a few problems. At level 200 there’s no excuses to not hit the last poise breakpoint that matters at 123. Idk if you can do it with white mask on, maybe, but the 123 poise for fighting lgs is better. So you need more endurance. As for weapon, bloody helice is just not as good as other hts. The ash is bad and very easy to parry, and the bleed isn’t as good as something actually blood infused. You’d be way better off with a bleed sword lance, 54 strength and as much arcane as you have left over, up to 60. Shouldn’t be a problem at 200. And the 25 faith for golden vow is just meh, you can get half the effect with a crab or flesh, and you have like 15 points to put somewhere else. And talis, with hts you are playing mostly unlocked, doing jumping attacks, and free aiming bc you can “sweep” the hts jump attack hitbox in an arc. So obviously, claw talisman. Also two handed sword, bc it’s just the best for anything two handed. Also learn to swap talis. Just organize your inventory, the swapping is honestly easier than organizing lol
Thank you for a detailed reply! Really helpful.
Yeah im swaapping weapons: bloody helice, 2xscav curved swords, mohg spear, eleonoras etc. Hence unoptimal stat distribution to use them all. Ill try to hit 123 poise though)
Stat distribution is fine for what you're using. Watching the video you posted before this, your problem is the way you utilize it. Relying on your high passive poise to try to mash it out with BH for a bleed proc to do your work for you is just not a reliable strategy.
Thanks! I don't always play like that) it was my 2nd match against bs chaincaster, so i just tried to rush him asap.
If you’re gonna use a thrusting sword put on the spear talisman.
Which one would you swap for spear talisman?
I’d probably swap out crimson amber since all of the others are more or less essential.
I like a quality build for the 200 bracket PvP. No fancy procs but you get to try out TONS of weapons, anything non somber basically, and some somber. Focus more on the movesets of the weapons, how to parry, getting backstabs, when to fight locked vs unlocked, jumping over certain attacks. You will be mopped at first but you learn to be pretty good that way.
Sadly got to go for boink.
Personnal favorite, Blasphemous Blade X/Faith build.
Can you share that build please
I didnt impose a level cap on my main, so not sure my build will suit you
I love full str, and lion claw is just so good. It carried me through half of the bosses
a simple Long sword and a great shield. Square off carried me.
Bubble gang for life
Bubble gang rise UP !
The best PvE build is "whatever works for you".
I personally go full strength, using swords like Blasphemous Blade and Maliketh's Black Blade. I also work my way up to heavy armor and a high defense shield for those times I get a little greedy/careless.
