Understanding Zoning in Tekken
Zoning in traditional 2D fighting games involves using projectiles and long-range attacks to control space and keep opponents at a distance. However, in Tekken, which is a 3D fighting game, zoning takes on a different form. It is more about controlling the midrange with longer limbs and keeping opponents at bay through strategic positioning and spacing rather than relying on projectiles [1:2].
Characters with Zoning Potential
While Tekken does not have traditional zoners like in Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, certain characters can effectively maintain distance and control space. Characters such as Lee and Bryan are known for their strong keep-out game, utilizing their moves to maintain an advantageous position [1:1]. Raven and Xiaoyu also offer good options for players looking to play a defensive midrange style
[1:2].
Projectile Users
Though not typical zoners, some Tekken characters have projectile-like moves. Claudio and Nina have been mentioned for their unique projectile abilities, though these moves can often be sidestepped due to the 3D movement in Tekken [1:3],
[1:9]. Jun and Raven are also noted for having projectile attacks, which can add a layer of strategy to their gameplay
[1:5].
Long Reach Characters
For those interested in characters with longer reach, Jack-8 and Paul might be worth considering. These characters have moves that allow them to strike from a distance, making it difficult for opponents to close in without taking damage [1:2],
[1:5]. This type of playstyle aligns more closely with the concept of zoning within the context of Tekken.
Conclusion
Ultimately, while Tekken 8 may not offer zoning in the traditional sense, there are characters who excel at controlling space and maintaining distance. Players interested in this playstyle should explore characters like Lee, Bryan, Raven, and Jack-8, and experiment with their unique abilities to find what suits their approach to the game.
Hey everyone! I absolutely am getting tekken 8 and I’m super pumped! That being said I just got into playing fighting games this year but other then the Injustice series and a tad of mk9 and the last two months of mk11. That being said I’m in love with street fighter 6 (Dhalsim main, with a bit of Zangief) and honestly not enjoying mk1 at all, can’t find my Kano/grappler character and I can’t stand trying to zone in mk because everyone has tele. I know I plan on playing King in Tekken 8 for grappling(having played tekken since PlayStation 1 days) but I was VERY curious as if there are any Zoners in tekking 8 that have been announced. I’m beyond pumped for this new tekken and to start fresh with this fighting game also! So who is a zoner type character? 🤔
Zoning doesn't really work the same way in 3D games it is more similar to what you would call defensive midrange character similar to Chun-Li where you rely on slightly longer limbs to keep the opponent out. Some decent choices for Tekken 8.
Raven, Xiaoyu, Jack-8, Paul, Lee, Bryan.
Appreciate the feedback going to look into all of these for sure! 32 characters right away is just so much haha trying to fine tune where I start and then go from there
Claudio (Throws arrows) and Nina (Uses gun) are the only two that do that for now but I wouldn't call them zoners cuz zoning doesn't really work in Tekken bcz of 3d movement. Your projectile will get sidestepped.
I’ll have to check out Claudio, sounds interesting. I get zoning won’t work in tekken, but I like long range pokes/projectiles just to be able to add it into the throw of things. It would be interesting to see a “shotgun” spreed zoner. Imagine it does full damage on same lane, then half damage on the two panes right next to that lane. If not blocked of course
there is no zoning in tekken aside from funny items
Speaking of funny items, Victor might fit the bill, but it appears we won't know until release.
actually I forgot about nina
doesn't she have guns now
I saw some videos on twitter that Jun and Raven have projectiles attack. Also Jack has longer reach if you consider that zoning.
Yeah jack looked super interesting also
Zoning in the 2D sense isn't really a thing in Tekken, but characters with very good keepout are characters like Lee or Bryan.
Bryan looks crazy lol! Very excited for Lee.
Bryan looks crazy lol
He is. He's literally insane
So now im playing shao kahn, baraka and kano, and i feel like none of them are particularly good at countering zoning so I'm wanting to throw an anti zoner into the mix. I know baraka and kano have decent projectiles but i cant really use them in a zoning battle against the games better zoners. Could be someone with a teleport, could just be a good zoner. Id prefer not to contribute to the scorpion epidemic, who would you suggest to pick up?
Jade owns every zoner. Throw up he glow and beat them at their own game and then beat them to death with her staff when they try to come in on her.
Yeah she has to be one of the best anti zoners because of that ability, my only issue with her really is that i dont find her that interesting as a character, shes probably exactly what im looking for gameplay wise though
I'd like to point out the caveat to this are zoners with physical projectiles and anyone with a teleport.
Sonya with a turret drop and a Skarlet nifty with the blood tentacle will wreck you if you become dependent on that aura.
Aura is impractical against teleports due to it's high startup. It's like asking to be combo'd.
Also her enhanced air glaive keeps her in the air for very long. Such a good defense AND offense mechanism and it's hard to predict if used sparingly
Skarlet, her teleport works really good if you time it well and her low proyectile helps you avoid incoming enemy proyectiles while allowing you to attack at the same time, enhance it and it'll give you enough time to teleport behind them, when you can start doing kombos as she's also good for that.
Or you could use Jade with her dodging shadows move (the purple glow that makes you inmune to proyectiles).
Kollector has a move that absorbs projectiles And has a teleport, as well as having good kids and command grabs. He also has good anti-air.
Jade is the anti-zoner. But also, Kano can blanka-ball past projectiles to anti-zone and shao can jump over with his leaping overhead.
Kano has to use a variation that gives up his kombo damage and shao kahns leap has to be well timed or he cops the punish/kounter, jade is probably what im looking for gameplay wise
I didn't realize that about kano, thanks. And yeah of course you have to time shao's overhead and not just throw it out randomly like an ape.
Which works really well with her zoning, because they're jumping in to avoid the air and ground glaives and so you can just wait for them to jump into range and bop them with it.
Jade scorpion raiden cetrion sub zero dead of winter
Raiden would probably be my pick out of those, not really into jade as a character, too many people play scorpion already, raiden has an interesting mix of abilities, his kb requirements suck though, cetrion seems interesting but i found her awkward to play when i tried her
What are the best zoning characters? I don’t really like getting all up in people’s faces and I’ve been interested in zoning. What are the best characters for that?
Noob’s a great zoner IMO, but the majority of his zoning attacks are cheap AF. You can just stand on one side and send Saibot to do all the work, shadow slam and shadow slide will keep your opportunity away from you. They are blockable so they’re not a perfect solution, but it works pretty well, you can also use Tele-Slam if you’re opponent has you caged in a corner and start using shadow slam/slide again to get some distance. Hope this helps some and good luck!
Wow youre trash. Just call it what it is and say "im a huge pussy and all i wanna do is spam a range attack like a bitch."
Thanks for being an asshole! I’m new to fighting games and while I AM learning combos, I need an easier character that doesn’t require complex strings of hits. Next time before you comment some stupid bullshit, think about others and how they would feel.
Imagine calling someone a pussy for not getting up close in a video game
Its a fighting game you retard. Go to cod if you wanna camp and shoot. Fuck off
Wow your trash, just call it what it is and say “im a scrub and can’t adapt do different playstyles than RUSHDOWN RUSHDOWN RUSHDOWN RUSHDOWN”
DOWN VOTE ‘EM BOYS!
Skarlet and Cetrion would probably be your best bets, Noob Saibot a little bit because i dont think he's as much of a zoner as the devs advertised
Just trying to figure out all of the anti zoning and rush down characters. It bores me to play zoners and I'm fairly new to MK11. Thanks! Edit: Thank you everyone so much for all the great suggestions! I appreciate it so much!
Totemic Kotal, projectile immunity on the kitty is a zoners nightmare
Yeah, I use him for subzero players.
But be careful with that move, if your enemy blocks you eat free throws or punishes.
Just play Johnny Cage, Cassie or Jacqui.
Just play someone who has a teleport
This is the right answer
Arachnophobia D'vorah turns any attempt at zoning into a footsie game.
If you want rush down go for jax, he’s very strong but can get zoned out. Johnny Cage is more balanced.
Getting a lot of zoning opponents recently and it's really annoying. Who do you think has the best abilities to counter zoning playstyle?
Better question: who wins by zoning in this meta? Quan, maybe, since that's basically all he has? Sektor is the most complete zoner, for sure. But the game isn't really about zoning. It's about setplay and mix.
I'd say it's Sektor. She has three different abilities which defend her against projectiles.
Tactical Redeploy: very quickly teleports her right on top of the opponent.
Enchanced Unguided Rocket: a projectile attack which destroys every enemy projectile on its way.
Blast Shield: a defensive stance which gives her a complete immunity to any projectile attack. After deflecting a projectile you can quicky counter-attack with Unguided Rocket or Sidewinder. Enchanced Blast Shield allows you to counter-attack with ANY special move, not just these two.
Combine Sektor with kameo Sub-Zero, and it will be impossible to zone you.
Lmao, beat a zoner with a zoner 🤦
So? Even though she is a zoner too, it doesn't change the fact that she has one of the best anti-zoning abilities in the game.
Basically anyone with teleport, Raiden, Smoke, Scorpion, Omniman, Sektor, Cyrax, Ghostface, Mileena, etc.
You can just use Sub-Zero kameo, his armor will negate almost all zoning attempts.
But if you still want a character with good defensive abilities against zoning, then just like the others here said, you may like Omni-Man and Sektor. They have Viltrumite Stance and Blast Shield. These abilities can be active nearly forever and give them an invulnerability to any ranged attack.
Noob question, I know.
I am aware that being aggressive is a big thing in the game. But I don't want zoner-first or defense-first.
You can name as many as you want but which ones fit rushdown the best?
Asuka, Clive, Anna, Lars, Nina, Alisa, Jin, Panda/Kuma, Leo, Hwaorang, Claudio.
To be fair all characters are rushdown characters in Tekken 8 but the above mentioned are the most prominent ones.
Claudio has nothing to rushdown with.
WR2 mixed up with WR3 and that sweep which is not -15 on block, his move in install that bounds on hit, charge up, best hopkick, then his mid high string kick into punch which is a heat engager.
Clive isn’t really a rush down character apart from heat strings that he can only really use twice. Is your idea of rush down simply blocking a heavy+ attack then having to guess low/mid lol
All good I wasn't going to main Clive
asuka, jin and claudio are not even close to being a rushdown character
Alright, I won't use those three.
I haven't played mishima style before, she looks amazing.
You can play Reina without using much if any of her Mishima kit, at least up to a point. Excellent for new players and she'll grow with you extremely well. She's pretty hard when you get higher up and it shows in her overall win rate. She's been dead last in win rate for a long time.
Anna
literally all you do with her is press buttons until one launches
Ah high tier it seems.
Nina, Law, Dragunov, Reina are conventional rushdown characters.
Mixup characters that also have strong rushdown: Anna, Hwoa
Jin is a poke character and a versatile all-rounder, so you can utilize a rushdown angle with him.
I just started playing the game and I’m wondering which characters have a rush down type of style. Also a zoning styling for my gf.
For a zoning style I recommend Cetrion, Skarlet, and Jade.
I'd recommend Cetrion for zoning and Liu Kang for rushdown. They are both very strong and quite easy to learn
Zoning would be Cetrion, Skarlett, jade, Sonya.
Rush down would be Jax, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Jacqui, Joker
That’s who I would go with but everyone is different. Try them all out and see who fits you the best
Cetrion is no joke. I consider myself pretty good at closing distance, but I fought a Cetrion in Kombat League that just had me locked fullscreen.
For zoning she might like Cetrion or Scarlet they are both very prominent zoning type characters.
I’d say start with these;
Rush down: Jax
Zoning: Skarlet
anyone know which character has most of the move that is -10 to -15 for standing/low on block?
trying to learn new character punish buttons.
Kazuya has moves from -10 to -15 on block, not sure about -10 tough
Db1
Df1,4
Df2
B1,4,2
B1,2
SS2(devil mode)
All moves in order from -10 to -15
Edit: Df4,4/Ws4,4 is also -15, Df321(without charge) is also -14
B1,4,2, you meant B2,4,1 right? yup its -13
Oh yeah B2,4,1 LoL I confused
Kazuya has moves from -10 to -15 on block, not sure about -10 tough
Db1
Df1,4
Df2
B1,4,2
B1,2
SS2(devil mode)
All moves in order from -10 to -15
Lili has everything from +1 to -15 on block, for lows she's only missing a -14 on block
ight thx, i'll lab with her.
PhiDX’s punishment training drill. He uses Law, i would check that video out.
i'll check that out. sure. thx
why not go with the character you lose to the most? Check your matchup stats over at waivu
I know it's the case with all fighting games but with the input delay and connection issues it's beyond a chore to fight them in this game.
What the hell is a melee zoner?
People like bankai ichigo, Gin, Azien, and the like
i think he talks about the ones with big button or good projectiles like aizen, ulquiorra etc .
Byakuya too yep
They can be for sure. Once you learn how they work though things become much simpler.
True, but most of the players that use them don't even move a muscle unless you try and approach.
That sounds predictable as hell then bro. If they do that, you know when they're going to act, and can guard/counter/flash step accordingly. Or if you're slightly better than complete ass; you can cause them to whiff by sidestepping or stopping just short of their range, & punish their giant whiff recoveries.
Heavily disagree on Sohei, Shaolin and Tiandi: I'd say they're easily an entire tier higher (Sohei and Tiandi's zones are some of their absolute best moves, and Shaolin's zone is also very good, both for waveclear and 1v1 usage).
Also, Gryphon's zone in bottom tier is...a take, for sure. It's a rather useful wide hitbox that you can use to semi-easily clip people in teamfights. Especially right after a parry, due to the added hyperarmor.
But, of course, personal experience varies a lot.
I regret it for Sohei, should have absolutely put him in S tier, Tiandi to in A although I do believe it's overrated for 1v1's, it is his absolute best zone clear
Shoalin is a lack of experience, only really ever saw it as a zone clear and thought it was mid in 1v1
Gryphon's zone being in the same spot as Conq was maybe a mistake but its definitely one of the worse zones imo, just not really useful outside of being somewhat useful in anti ganks and slightly useful in teamfights, I just think it's slowness holds it back and it feels like there are better options in situations where it can be used
I mean, Gryphon's zone is just 600ms, which is standard zone speed. In addition to getting hyper armor if used after a parry and being pretty big, making it a strong teamfight disruption tool.
I'd rank it somewhere in the upper half, I think. Although not totally sure where.
Gryphon and Jiang Jun's zones are the exact same move lol
Lawbringer's zone as a parry riposte is an unblockable and has a wild hitbox
Not quite sure why Orochi's zone is so high when it's nothing more than a basic 500ms attack, while Warmonger is a tier below and is the exact same thing, and Jorm is a tier above and is also the exact same thing
Aramusha and Tiandi being a tier below Orochi makes no sense when their zones are also 500ms but automatically chain directly into offense (unblockable/soft feints, kick mixup)
Black Prior should probably be higher since the amount of Stamina Drain+Pause on his zone is frankly absurd
>Not quite sure why Orochi's zone is so high when it's nothing more than a basic 500ms attack, while Warmonger is a tier below and is the exact same thing, and Jorm is a tier above and is also the exact same thing
I'm counting every single Zone option they have so I'm counting Jorms chain zone which is a REALLY big hyper armor strike that can continue his chain after a finisher light and heavy, this move is really useful in teamfights, anti ganks and and 1v1s also an amazing zone clearer
The tier list on how useful their zones are for them, Orochi uses his zone for not just 1v1s, it's his main zone clear option and one of his most useful anti ganks tools. Aramusha's is good in 1v1s but it never see anyone zone clear with it or use it outside of a 1v1, Tiandi could be higher but as it's a good 1v1 tool but also a great zone clear too
Also the animation for Aramusha's and Tiandi's zone is just way easier to see and react to (at least for me) making them much easier to parry them
I'm counting every single zone they have
so I'm counting JJ's zone in Sifu stance which is an unblockable strike with a wild hitbox that comes from an invasion stance
>Lawbringer's zone as a parry riposte is an unblockable and has a wild hitbox
Which is why I put him above Conq, this move is good but like not enough in my opinion, only good for anti ganking, never seen this move used in teamfights, can be used in 1v1s to get a kill as it does higher damage then light attack but you really have to know because you will not a follow up after it
Wait wait, Tiandi lower than WL? The same zone that soft feint into his kick and can be hard feint?, what?
Again this tier list is based on how useful the zone is to them, maybe I should have put Tiandi at A, it is a really useful zone clear option but I don't think it's that good in 1v1's
Tiandis zone is a really important part of this kit in duals, it allows direct access to his kick mix (higher damage mix in his kit) by soft feinting the second hit. It’s used in heavy parries and can easily catch dodges with the first hit hitbox. It also has a massive lunge distance as well to top it off.
On the same note there’s no way highlanders zone is B tier. Has to be A or S if it’s ranking how important to his kit it is. It if much safer than a heavy in neutral with makes it a better way to try to get into stance with due to its earlier hyper armour and being effectively gb invulnerable. The latter is due to a very small gb vulnerability window that is small enough to allow you to use it in frame plus from a counter gb to punish a second gb attempt, something the heavy can’t do. There’s a lot of stuff that can be done with the zone and it can do a lot of work in specific matchups as well making it a very important part of hl’s kit to me,
It can be soft feinted to a kick which the kick can be hard feinted. How is that not good in 1v1?
