TL;DR Sebastian and Poppy are the most favored companions due to their engaging storylines and distinct personalities. Ominis also receives notable appreciation for his role and character depth.
Sebastian Sallow
Sebastian is a fan favorite due to his complex storyline and personality. Players appreciate his willingness to break rules and his humorous demeanor [2:1]
[3:2]. His story is considered well-written, with significant depth and rewarding outcomes
[2:1]. Despite his tendency to whine, players find his motivations relatable and enjoy the darker path he takes for seemingly good reasons
[5:1]
[5:2].
Poppy Sweeting
Poppy is beloved for her genuine love of magical creatures and her wholesome storyline [1:5]
[2:5]. Her radiant personality and surprising fierceness make her a compelling companion
[2:7]. Players enjoy her quests and the joyful moments she brings, such as when she shows happiness at defeating poachers
[2:3]. Her loyalty and caring nature resonate strongly with many players
[2:6].
Ominis Gaunt
Though not always mentioned alongside Sebastian and Poppy, Ominis has a dedicated following. Players appreciate his struggle with helping Sebastian and his unique perspective as a visually impaired character [4:4]
[5:5]. His interactions add depth to the narrative, making him a favorite for some players
[4:2].
Natsai Onai
Natsai seems to be less popular compared to Sebastian and Poppy. Some players feel she doesn't stand out, describing her as a typical Gryffindor character [3:1]
[5:1]. However, her background as a transfer student from Uagadou and her connection to Rookwood provide interesting elements to her character
[3:11]
[5:6].
Amit Thakkar
Amit is generally seen as less engaging than other companions. While he provides some humor and knowledge, players often rank him lower due to his limited involvement in the main story [5:1]
[5:2]. His contribution, like providing a telescope, is viewed as minor compared to the more dynamic roles of other characters
[5:6].
I’m intrigued because people say how good poppy and sebast are. I am 20% through the game and like Sebastian
I love Sebastian and Poppy, but Seb is a ride or die for me. I think he reminds me too much of myself at that age, minus the cursed sister and murdering my guardian part. But the angst and stubbornness? Absolutely me.
Poppy's just a good soul. She wants to save magical beasts to amend for >!the wrongdoings of her parents!<. Sebastian on the other hand is angry, just angry.
I like Poppy’s motivation. It’s her genuine love for the beasts that elevate her missions.
And he gets angrier the more you do with him. Poppy is just happy to have a friend not making fun of her love of animals.
I expect Seb to be the most loved boy with Poppy trailing in behind.
And I was right.
Anyway, it's Ominis, not "Ominus".
I hate Natty, because she can be an animagus and I can't, because she flexes with her "roxforts+" and with her "oh, we all cast spells without wands in my country" bs.
lol that would be like getting mad that ppl speak a whole different language in a foreign country. yea things are kinda different in different parts of the world, magic or otherwise
It's nothing like languages. Wandless magic is canonically really hard and also dangerous. My issue is not even that Natty can do it as a 5th grade, but her whole country, basically from the start. It's bragging and flexing. That whole character is a weird flex.
It's not hard to cast magic without wands in the wizarding world. It's actually hinted that it's common for pre school age children to do accidental magic without wands, hagrid asked Harry something like have you ever made anything happen that you couldn't explain or something similar, for example Harry removing the glass from the snake containment. He's done stuff like this several times without a wand, like blowing his aunt up like a balloon or making lights flicker. Its all a matter of learning to control it as Dumbledore said. Its just been a set tradition for people in the hogwarts area to use wands. If somebody started out casting wandless magic they would just as proficient as they would be with a wand.
"Wandless magic was the performance of magic without the use of a wand. Such magic was often difficult to perform, and could have unexpected or volatile results if not done properly. Usually, witches and wizards accustomed to using wands could only reliably perform wandless magic if they possessed great skill."
Difficult, requires great skill. Otherwise unexpected or volatile side effects. It's the lore that wandless magic is hard. The wandless spells kids "cast" due to strong emotions (like Harry's cases) are not something that discredit this established lore.
It's written down in the books, dunno why I need to explain this.
Sebastian is good, even though my character was against using dark magic. Sebastian was always down to fight every time so we had a lot of hype moments.
It's seb for me, the guy is hilarious and he helped me get the key for the restricted section of the libraru
I love Seb but Poppy is so sweet and the story is so wholesome with her
poppy is funny because she's so sweet and also caring for animals, but she got that blood thirsty side to her. She doesn't waste a step destroying a poacher and always up for a battle ha
Bloodthirsty Hufflepuff is my favourite Hufflepuff. Same goes for Garlick, tee-hee Disney princess who >!maimed and probably killed her predecessor because he was mean to plants!<
haha she is so real. the definition of "looks like a cinnamon roll but could kill you." her loyalty is her best trait!
Seb has the funniest jokes, and hates spiders just as much as I do, but Poppy has such a radiant, joyful smile on her face >!when a dragon burns poachers alive!<, so she wins.
Poppy. Sebastian is a close second, but I wish there was more with Ominis.
Poppy cuz she smol
Poppy is so cute for real, she actually reminds me a lot of my girlfriend, that’s also why i think i like her so much
Sebastian is my favorite. IMO, his story has the most depth, is the best written and has the best rewards than any other of the companion storylines.
Based on their lore, characteristics and personalities, who do you see yourself spending more time with in the game and most likely to side with if you had to make the choice?
IMPORTANT NOTE: As of yet, even though Amit is in Ravenclaw, he is still not yet 100% confirmed companion.
I'm surprised Natsai is so low. Between being a transfer student, having studied magic at Uagadou, and having a mother working at the school, there's a lot going for her.
I personally chose Sebastion because he isn’t afraid of sneaking around late at night & breaking the rules & going down a very dark path for good reasons seemingly which is exactly the type that I’d befriend if I was at Hogwarts.
right 😭 im going into slytherin but hoping i can still have natsai as a companion cause i wanna learn more about Uagadou and the wizarding world in africa 😭
I mean... Sebastion looks like the breaking rules and fun guy. Who wouldnt want a partner in crime? Poppy looks like a cute animal lover. She feels like my best friend already and who doesnt love some magical beasts. Amir sense of humor draws me in. He seems knowlegable and hilarious.
On the other hand I personally feel like Natsai doesnt stand out amongst the others as of now. Smart goody Gryffindor. At least for me. Hopefully it will change.
10 Points to the Hufflepuff OP for including Amit even tho unconfirmed. Very on brand.
IMO if Amit was going to be a companion on the same level as Natsai, Sebastien, and Poppy, Avalanche/WB would have made that crystal clear by now.
With all the presumption flying around this community these past few days, they are going to have to come out with an explicit statement ASAP, because if he is NOT in the same league as those three confirmed companions, people are going to be pissed. Even though WB never said he was, people have now made the assumption and are running with it. It's bad PR.
That's the thing though they have stuck with the word "companion" for as long as they showed off the SOP and only just now change the word to classmate with this Ravenclaw student? Suspicious much? Trying to dodge a bullet?
I commented on Retro Raconteurs stream about this reveal acting as a "soften the blow" because their legitimately isnt a RCC for us and he said he thinks I might be right.
I'm sorry but if they haven't added a companion to RC that's on par with the others then they'll have alienated 1/4 of the fanbase yes most will still play but as you said thats going to be bad PR.
If he is legitimatly our companion what the hell was the big deal in hiding this from us for all these months? shits and giggles?
The reval of Ammit was very underwhelming and feels like an afterthought, his description gave off major lockhart vibes and I don't fancy a younger version of lockhart prancing around and possibly trying to nick my achievements.
I really don't like how they showed off 3 of 4 in SoP and left Ravenclaw High and dry, alot of people including myself thought for months that perhaps the RCC is huge important to the story and would instantly recognisable for their surname thus the reason for such secrecy.
Others have commented that WE are suppose to be the 4th thus making us plus the other 3 a representation of the 4 founders.....but if thats the case that's quite a lack of foresight on their part if that's true not everyone will be going RC on their first playthrough they'll be playing as their own house then do other playthrough.
So if their really is no companion for us and we are supposed to be that fill in....I then 'm reigning hell & carnage upon the other house's 🤡🤡👹👹😈😈💣💣💣💣💥💥💥💥
Poppy, we know the least about her and she seems like a cinnamon roll who can kill you kinda girl which I absolutely love
I hope she has a bit of an attitude too, I feel like hufflepuff gets a bad rap, and people assume they don't stick up for themselves. It would be nice to see someone subvert that expectation.
Yeah this is pretty much what is going on for me.
I don't think Natsai is bad, I'm just interested more in the other three because we already had tons of brave and righteous Gryffindors, while the other houses have been quite neglected when it comes to characters who are very present or important for the plot and the MC(the only important friend from another house that Harry has is Luna)
Yeah, I think people want to see a non-gryffindor shine for once.
Depending on your choices maybe. I don't think there is dark companions and light companions. Each one could go each way in my opinion, depending on what happens.
The bros Sebastian and Ominis they’re my golden trio lol
Mine is garreth wealsey. I can break rules with him and he's good and knows how to have fun.
Ominis actually. I will admit to some bias though as a visually impaired person myself, seeing interesting blind characters always makes me happy
The kid clapping and laughing to himself in front of the house points hourglasses
Poppy, although Ominis is a close second. I love to see characters who love animals a lot like I do. Plus she has such an awesome personality. Her quests were my favorite. I just really love her
#1 Poppy - for trying to save the world, cute, scary when she needs to be.
#2 Sebastian - for trying to do things for the right reason and he's got a pretty charming personality.
#3 Natty - for trying to get something done, even though she goes too far.
#4 Everyone else - even anonymous unnamed NPCs are more interesting than Amit
#5 Amit - not very interesting. not much use in a fight. Can't say I blame him.
All mid characters at best, agree that poppy and Sebastian stand out the most
Ominis is more fun than Natty. You can see the struggle he has for helping Sebastian.
Pretty much my ranking as well, only that I would put Everett below Amit.
I put Incel Clopton below everyone else personally. That's how much I LOATHE Everett
*#5 all the cats
*#6 Amit
I'd appreciate more missions with him. He talks to you throughout and is also pretty handy in a fight, considering Seb literally did fuckall at Crossed Wands and then every other place you go with him 😂
I'll say she's better than Amit because she actually has story missions and ties to Rookwood. While Amit... Gives you a telescope... 👍 great job Amit
1). Seb <3
2). Poppy
3). Amit
4). Natsai
Poppy, she gets you into cool shit
Sebastian, he whines a lot about you for no reason. Bro, I'm literally the only one helping you at this point
Amit, he's just there sometimes
Natty, she's incredibly boring? I don't hate her, but I just never really want to start her quests either
Ominis is my favorite, though
What made me cry was the part that he had a bittersweet tone when he finally found the lifelong work his wife did that ended in her death. Miriam going after the knowledge of ancient magic and got her killed, ended up with him seeing everything to the end. "If only Miriam could see this" I can feel his regret of not being with her.
Nah. Miriam was a **** who abandoned him to pursue her research.
I was convinced he would be the bad guy at the end. Part of me still thinks they scrapped it as an ending.
From the second conversation I immediately had a feeling he was going to be the bad guy! I can’t believe he isn’t.
I was eagerly awaiting the ‘IT’S ME [MC]; IT WAS ME ALL ALONG [MC]’ moment and felt really unfulfilled when it didn’t happen.
I get sad EVERY time, I swear. So we just pretend he’s alive🫠
I think his fate should have been different depending on your choice for the repository
I sobbed over his fate. Literally cried for ages, send help. It still upsets me
I've gone through so many replays and even though I know what's coming, I still well up with tears!
In my mind we saved him.
Same. I’m just pretending he’s fine and he totally didn’t die
He took back all of my serotonin in the end 😭
Hostile Herbert he was so secret he wasn’t even in the chapter
Hoppy, Idk but I just feel like she would be loyal and wanna help like Kissy
Either Simon or Touille since they are in the Baba Chops boss fight and do not attack us in it, unlike Baba and Poe
If anything the little Simon we saved could become a companion
Yeah it would be cool if there was two different endings depending on whether or not you saved simon
NOOO YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO OBEY ME!
the 16 smiling critters:
Poe probably
Sebastian's story is frustrating, as there's no resolution to Ann's problem, which started it all. Natsai's was just so- so, I was expecting more. Poppy's was excellent, as you did resolve a big problem, you get to face and help a dragon, and you get invited for a butterbeer after. So Poppy's was the best.
I think the lack of resolution to Anne’s curse was a major part of the story’s theme. Sebastian had poured everything into the dark arts to save her, but it cost him everything and it didn’t even work. From a narrative perspective, it wasn’t about saving Anne, but Sebastian’s fall.
I can agree with your take on Natsai’s though. I sympathize with her, but it felt like she was just inserting herself into the Ashwinder plot because it was easier than therapy.
I like the Sebastian storyline the best but don't really care for Sebastian once he crosses the line. I care about Poppy the most but her storyline is just decent. I don't really care about the storyline with Natty nor the character that much.
I tried to make Sebastian go bad
Forget "I can fix him", I can make him worse! :D
This is pretty close to how I feel about them.
For real. I hated how Natty is written as a total Mary Sue and the way she comes off with her superiority complex “oh wands who needs wands in MY country we don’t use wands it’s such a British thing. Oh ya I’m a NATURAL animagus. Oh look as I have so many hero moments. I am the best student in this class” and on and on. Poppy was just that friendly classmate who got in over her head on your side quest and she felt way more relatable. Sebastian had a great quest line but Ominis stole the show for Slytherin whenever he was around with the lore you get via him being a Gaunt.
I honestly wanted more of a troublemaker storyline with Garreth Weasley.
Need Garreth DLC
IDK why they chose to make her just walking exposition and constantly talking about how everything outside Hogwarts is apparently a million times more advanced.
Learning the curses was crazy
Possibly the first time you go to get your wand and you end up fighting a troll, she talks to you from the doors of the castle to when you get your wand and more after that 😅
Let’s not ignore that that adorable pouty puppy-eyed frogwife is absolutely covered in blood.
Where is Boo? Boo keeps Minsc moving and working.
Or is Boo actually the narrator?
Everyone belongs on the top row.
Switch Minthara and Astarion
So who us everyone's favorite companions in BG1 personally my favorite are Neera Garrick and rasaad
Imoen and Minsc in BG1. Add Aerie and Keldorn in BG2. With BG1 NPC Project I really like what it adds for Jaheira. Well, Imoen too. But Jaheira enough that she also becomes a favorite.
Having Minsc, Aerie and Keldorn in a party leads to some pretty wholesome dialogs
Minsc is sub-optimal for power-gaming purposes.
On the other hand, “Jump on my sword while you can, Evil, I won’t be so gentle!”
Minsc increases my enjoyment of life. And Boo.
The best is when you stealth him. Giggled for an entire day over that one
Sometimes I love having Minsc around. And sometimes I can’t take another “go for the eyes, Boo, go for the eyes! Aaarggh!”
It's funny, when BG1 was newish, nearly every guide said he was competing with Edwin for best character in the game. Now he's often held up as one of the worst. Of course, the old proficiency system suited him better and Dorn overtook him as strongest character.
Or when you put him as a group leader, makes me laugh everytime!
Magic is impressive, but now, MINSC leads! SWORDS FOR EVERYONE!!
You listed three excellent reasons to love Minsc!
Kagain: Best tank in the game, bar none. With the dex gloves, he has 16/18/20 and the best racial shorty saves. The biggest danger to your main tank is being incapacitated by a spell. At least he gets a small bonus to protect him from those, which no other main tank in BG1 has.
Xan: Enchantment spells really peak in the low levels, which is where you find Xan. His loss of Evocation spells is a non-issue, because you can still cast fireball, cloudkill and magic missile from wands with him. His -2 penalty on all cast enchantment spells is a really big deal. Considering enchantment spells will usually end the fight if they connect, that's huge. He gets a unique sword which hits for +3 and adds some AC. I usually turn off his autoattacks and let him stand there while holding it.
Viconia: Drow are fucking busted. 70%ish base MR means most spells won't affect her. She's also a pure caster cleric and cleric spells are absolutely essential in the early going. You NEED a character with Remove Fear casting that spell before every major fight. Command is up there with Sleep as a game-changer that ends fights before they begin. Hold Person and Silence are both fight-enders too, and divine casters don't need to scribe scrolls. Meaning you don't have to spend any of your time or money to acquire the spells you need for them. They just come with everything.
Baeloth: Another fucking broken Drow. 2nd best caster in the game, if not the best outright. Edwin has more spells but Baeloth has MR as well as the ability to learn Stoneskin as soon as you reach the appropriate level to cast it.
Branwen: Branwen is a different kind of Cleric than Viconia. Her stats are just about good enough that she can stand on the front line with Ashideena+2. You can make her your main tank IF you want to. I've done it many times. She is neutral and rolls with any party and her chaos of battle ability can be very nice. She's just a solid character. No, she can't output good physical damage because her apr and thaco are trash. But she can stand there with high AC and take abuse, or you can put her in the back row and she's still a full divine caster.
Coran: Ridiculously strong character and too OP not to take in Good parties.
Khalid and Jaheira: My favorite of the characters who come as a couple. Jaheira is a solid tank and Khalid can either be a second tank or an archer. He's not as good at archery as Coran, but he's more flexible.
In first place
Edwin
In second place
Edwina (BG2)
Edwin is the best!
Xan is hilarious, has an awesome kit, and has a neat dagger that gives him 50% fire resistance (though it turns off if he switches to a sling)
