TL;DR
Recommended Brands and Palettes
Several brands and palettes have been highlighted as particularly suitable for dark skin tones. Juvia's Place is frequently recommended due to its rich pigmentation and warm tones that cater specifically to darker skin [1:3]
[4:2]. Mented Cosmetics offers a palette of nine neutral/nude shades designed explicitly for pigmented skin, avoiding powdery or ashy undertones
[3:1]. Huda Beauty's nude palettes, especially the medium and deep variants, are also suggested for their compatibility with dusky skin tones
[5:3]
[5:4].
Eyeshadow Base and Primer
Using an eyeshadow base or primer can significantly enhance the appearance of eyeshadow on dark skin. A lighter base, such as those offered by P. Louise, can bring out the saturation of shadow colors [1:2]. NYX Milk Pencil is another affordable option that helps make colors pop
[3:6]. Applying a primer first can assist in retaining the shadow and blending the color better
[3:5].
Color Selection and Application Techniques
Rich and warm tones tend to complement dark skin well. Neutral browns, reds, and berry tones are popular choices [2:1]
[5:2]. Layering more pigments and using shimmer shades can enhance the look
[3]. Tutorials from makeup artists like Jackie Aina can provide valuable insights into application techniques for hooded eyes and dark skin
[3:7].
Additional Recommendations
Other palettes worth considering include Nicka K, Viseart Addict, BH Cosmetics, and Forever52, which are known for their pigmentation and suitability for dark skin [4:1]. Morphe Ice Fantasy Palette and Natasha Denona's Lila palette were also mentioned as options that might work well
[4:3]. For bold looks, palettes like Too Faced Sunset Strip and Age of Opulence from Beauty Bay offer vibrant colors
[5:5]
[4:7].
These recommendations provide a starting point for exploring eyeshadow options that enhance and celebrate dark skin tones.
This is super embarrassing to admit but I am not very good at doing makeup on dark skin. I can colour match, I can do corrections no problem, but as soon as I start doing eye makeup or anything else, it just looks meh. Part of it is definitely needing more rich and warm tones in my kit but I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to improve? I don’t really have anyone around to practice in person
I definitely felt this was as well until I lightened my eyeshadow base…. P. Louise has awesome rang for shadow bases that will bring the saturation of your shadow colors to life.
I would also buy Black Owned Palettes as they are much richer and warmer to cater to darker skin tones. I personally love using Juvia Eye shadow Palettes which can be found in ulta stores or on their website.
I’ve been eyeing Juvias place for a while. Time to finally stop delaying it
Yay! Let me know how you like it!
I use a MAC paint pot on the eyes first, either It's Fabstract or Contemplative State - depending on their skin tone and what look i'm going for. On lighter skin I use the paint pots in Soft Ochre if they have yellow/golden undertone, Painterly for pink undertone and then layin low or groundwork if its a deeper dramatic look
In my experience, I use the same eyeshadow colors on dark people as I do on other people with medium and light skin tones. I just make sure their foundation, powders and primers match their skin perfectly. Don’t over think it. Comunícate with your client, ask what they like, then you can go from there. :)
Look I’m not looking for it to be extremely pigmented but I just want to know if it will show up on my skin color even if it’s kinda sheer but that’s kinda what I’m looking for to
im not sure on the palettes, but i know for a fact the cream cheek blush will show up great, i have a friend with darker skin who bought one of canmakes blushes and it shows up on her skin beautifully! so dont worry about that at least
I need a natural reddish palette for my dark skin so bad
I feel like c-beauty would be your best bet for Atleast pigment because what I’ve seen in Korean and Japanese eyeshadows is that most are a white based shadow
also korean shadows can get reallll dusty/pigmentation isn’t the strongest. glitters are bomb tho
Hey y’all, I’ve been recently trying to up my shadow game and I still suck. This sucks lol I don’t know anything about how to match colors nicely.
I have three shadow palettes: Two from Juvias Place (Warrior I and II) and the first Fenty eyeshadow palette with the reflective case. So far the basic looks I do are taking the shimmer shades and putting them in my inner eye corner and then finishing with eyeliner. My skin is pretty brown so I’ve been realizing that I need to layer more and use more pigments.
Anything to help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Lorissa Turner and Vanessa Renee are pretty good resources. I’d also recommend trying the color pop Jelly Much shadows. It’s basically a one swipe and you’re done application, and it wears beautifully. If you like the one color all over look it’s definitely something to look into.
I second the colourpop jellies! they’re amazing! i have hooded eyes as well and they’re sooooo creamy and pigmented but dry matte.
Are you applying a primer first? Do you apply a base color to your lid? Both of those techniques assist in retaining the shadow and blending the color better. You should also do a swatch test on your arm to check the quality of the shadow pigments. Some shadows are highly pigmented so that you can reflect the color better. If the shadow has weak or patchy pigmentation, you’ll have to apply more or use a lighter base. Some people use NYX milk pencil for that. NYX is very affordable
Check out YouTube or r/makeupaddiction for further details.
I’m using a NYX eyeshadow base from a drugstore I got a couple of months ago. No base color either. What should I be looking for in a base color? From the two palettes I named above could you point to what on them could be considered a good base color?
How does the NYX base feel when you put it in? It’s a liquid in a tube bottle with a sponge applicator, right? I tend to like creamy primers like Urban Decay or Lorac but they can be pricy. They aren’t tacky or dry on my lids. For the shadow, I don’t have those palettes but I use a shade that’s the same color as my face although my lids are slightly darker. It gives my lids a uniform matte appearance. Then I apply my chosen shadow colors on top.
i must say that I’m curious about the independent line mentioned by another commenter so I’ll probably check them out
I love Jackie Aina on youtube, she has a few hooded eye tutorials
Mented Cosmetics is a beauty brand based in Harlem, for black women, by black women. They make an eye shadow palette of nine neutral/nude shades explicitly for pigmented skin with none of those powdery, ashy, dusty undertones. I'm not an expert in make-up or color, but the tones are warm, and have a very subtle orangy/coral undertone, even the lightest shades. They're very pigmented, so a little product goes a long way. It's $28, but it's a very generous portion. Here's a photo of mine with a tube of classic Maybelline mascara for size comparison.
Edit: they do a lot of one-day pop-ups around the country -- I went to the one in Harlem -- and you can try all the shades before buying, chat with the owners, etc. Check their socials for details: @mentedcosmetics
There's been a couple of posts with eyeshadow palette recommendations already but nothing for dark skin specifically. As someone with dark skin, I've been unable to find an ideal palette to that'll suit my skin. All I've used for eyeshadow so far is my blush. A random palette I tried barely showed on my skin so I've been apprehensive to experiment with eyeshadows so far.
I've just ordered two Kiro eyeshadow sticks to begin with since they seem easy to deal with and I'm also hoping to ask a relative to get something from Juvia's Place later in the year since those palettes are dark skin friendly.
Skin tone for reference: Shade Mahogany in NYX total control drop foundation, 420 Fenty foundation and assuming NC 50 in MAC (haven't used Mac so not too sure)
I'm not one to experiment with makeup tbh, my style is pretty boring and basic so I'm not really comfortable using bright vibrant colours.
I'd be so grateful for your recommendations for beginner friendly eyeshadow palettes for dark skin that are versatile.
Thanks!
Elf ones are great and they show up on my lids pretty well! Apart from that Juvias berry / neutral ( 6pan ones are great to begin with) they’re long lasting and huge pans so it will last you a while. Miniso also has great eyeshadow sticks! I w pi ek suggest using a primer which would neutralise your eye lids a bit to make colours pop out. I have pigmented lids and primers help.
Thanks for the suggestions! Elf seems like a good place to start, glad they have your stamp of approval. Love all your posts. The Juvia's berry palette looks so good! Oh wow, never noticed the eyeshadow sticks at Miniso, will do the next time I'm there. Will definitely try using a primer-concealer before eyeshadows from now. Thanks!
Most welcome! I have 3 sticks from miniso and they’re so creamy and nice! You should also check the eyeshadow + liner from Bollyglow! Apply on your eyes, smudge with the applicator given and it dries down so well!
So, I'm not dark toned so I'm unsure if this will work for you. But I recommend the Morphe Ice Fantasy Palette. It's such a gorgeous pastelish palette. It's beautiful but doesn't work the best with my light skin. I definitely think this palette would make your shadow pop and stand out. 💙💙 and As another said Age of Opulence is gorgeous 😍 and I recently came across the most beautiful Natasha Denona palette. It's her Lila palette, so gorgeous 😍
Okay Bear with me lol
I will be suggesting Palettes and sharing my review/swatch/eye looks as well.

Thank you for your detailed response, appreciate it. They all look so great on you!
Thank you so much, if you really liked my efforts you can consider following/liking/sharing/saving. I have been trying to grow consistently since an year. It will really help me.
Nicka K eyeshadow palettes - very affordable, & you'll find plenty of American dark skin folks giving them a positive review.
Viseart Addict palettes will for sure show up on dark skin, they're super pigmented. Viseart Dark matte palette is very day to day friendly for dark skin.
BH cosmetics 16 pan palettes have fantastic pigment, they show up really nicely on dark skin.
Forever52 palettes are quite pigmented, those & Europe Girl palettes (from what I've seen on ig tutorials)
Your best bet however is to use a light concealer as base for any eye look, that way the colours will pop more.
Check out KIKO Milano eyeshadow sticks if you're not one to use too many shades, they have all kinds of finishes & even the pastel shades show up great on tan skin.
That's a lot of options, thank you so much! Where did you find the kiko sticks? It's out of stock on Myntra and can't seem to find it anywhere else.
Concealer as a base makes sense, will be trying that. Thank you!
I got mine from Kiko store, but I have seen them on nykaa & foxy in the past.
Yeah straight up white concealer is great 💯
The beauty bay age of opulence palette - has a mix of neutrals and colourful shadows. Just Stunning!
Wow that looks amazing. Thanks for the recommendation! Did you have to pay customs?
I can never get any good eyeshadow tutorials on dark skin and i get so confused on which color palette should i use. Which eyeshadow palette will you recommend for dusky/dark skin? Suggest Nude and Bold palettes both please.
Check out Bare Soul by Kay Beauty. It's a neutral brown palette with two shimmers.
HUDA beauty naughty nude eyeshadow palette!
That palette looks gorgeous actually! Need to get my hands on them
Huda nude palettes - check out medium and deep
Thanks will give them a try! Waiting for the next Huda Beauty sale :’)
Too faced sunset strip !
Looks good but i only worry if they’d pop nicely on my brown skin tone
Hi all! I'm very interested in starting a discussion and learning about how different colours can work with a variety skin tone/ eye colour, especially in unexpected ways, almost like a discovery! This is what sparked this idea:
I'm a light-medium with neutral undertones and blackened brown eyes, and usually I avoid yellowy golds like a plague, under the impression that it will make my skin look strangely yellow toned, and the the colour will take away depth from my eyes.
Then I saw a comment mentioning gold eyeshadows on this sub, and decided to confront my biases. I smeared on the gold shade in the PMG Dark Star 6 pan palette and did a simple brown wing. WOW, I was mind blown by how glam it looked, it did not clash with my skin at all and accentuated my eyes very nicely.
I'm very curious to learn about everybody's perfect colour, and reasons behind it!
Im pale, cool toned, brownish hazelish eyes. Brown eyeshadows always look horrible... like dirt on me. Reds and oranges somehow look amazing for my eyeshadow but orange lip shades do not compliment me at all. For blush, light pink shades look super natural with my skin tone. Bronzers and orangey blushes look horrible.
Blushes shouldn't be that difficult to put on but yet the one I bought from Walmart is too LIGHT on my face... I thought it would be just a simple pink blush but I guess I have to get colors that are at least darker to fit my skin tone. Like the different shades of red, for example. I wish I could give the product name but I threw away the box so I can't really provide the brand name :/) there's not that much variety of blushes to buy at Walmart are there any cheaper ones that I can buy in cheaper stores? Should I order my makeup product on amazon?
edit: THANK YOU SO MUCH GUYS!
I'm learning about darker skin tones since I want to be a makeup artist one day. I've heard Rare Beauty blushes are very dark skin friendly and they have a very wide range of shades.
So are those liquid blushes from Colourpop. I was a little shook by the pigment. I LOVE the Rare Beauty blushes
If you’re open to cream blush, your fave lipsticks can be worn on cheek and lip!
Fenty, Uoma, BLK OPL, Juvia’s Place all have good options.
-Maybelline fit me blushes have a pretty good range
-The Milani cheek kiss blush in merlot moment and blushing berry are pretty on darker skin
-Juvias place blush duo (they sometimes have 50% off on website)
thank you!!!!
Hi OP! 🤗
I am a MAC NC50/Fenty 420/Maybelline Warm Coconut.
I will list the ones that I have and will check as I go along to make sure they are all still available. Very often the toughest Blush Shade to find for Deep/Dark Skin is Brown, so I will list as many of them that I have that are still available.
Warning: This will be a looong List, lol - all Blushes are Matte unless specified.
Black Radiance Artisan Blush in # 8315 Brick House (this is more of a Warm Plum)
Black Radiance Artisan Blush in # 8306 Toasted Almond (muted Terracotta)
Nars Quirimba (it is a Bronzer but I use it for a Blush)
Sephora #6 Ibiza (also a Bronzer that I use for a Blush)
Make Up Forever Artist Face Color # S404 (Deep Purplish Brown)
Make Up Forever Artist Face Color # S400 (Medium Deep Reddish Brown)
Make Up Forever Artist Face Color # S118 (Medium Deep Neutral Brown)
Make Up Forever Artist Shadow Color M-600 (Pink Brown)
MAC Cosmetics Film Noir (Deep Chocolate Brown)
MAC Cosmetics Raizin (Meduim Deep Reddish Brown)
MAC Cosmetics Burnt Pepper (I consider this to be a Coolish Terracotta)
Ben Nye Powder Rouge - Desert Coral # DDR - 71 ( Deep Cool Terracotta)
Ben Nye Powder Rouge - Dark Tech # DDR - 9 (Burnt Orange)
Ben Nye Powder Rouge - Red Brown #DDR - 17 (Red Brown)
Ben Nye Powder Rouge - Chestnut # DDR - 10 (Deep Cool Reddish Brown)
Ben Nye Eyeshadow - Raisin # ER 72 (Deep Brown with slightest touch of Violet, the Violet almost imperceptible)
Ben Nye Eyeshadow - Black Plum # ER - 75 (Very Deep Brownish Purple)
Cover FX Monochromatic Blush Duo in Rich Mulberry (the Blush is more like a Muted Medium Deep Violet)
Beauty Bay UK (they ship to the US) Beauty Bay Bronzer in Oak (Golden Brown)
Beauty Bay UK Blush in Merlot (Very Deep Reddish Purple)
Revolution Beauty (aka Makeup Revolution) Makeup Obsession Violet Palette (Quad) Shades of Orange, Medium Pink w/ Gold overspray, Fuschia, Deep Reddish Brown, more Red than Brown)

L'Oreal Paradise Enchanted Scented Blush in Fantastical (Another Peach, this one is brighter in colour)
Lorac Buildable Blush in Cinematic (Pium-ish Brown)
Milani Baked Blush in Corallina (Peach with Golden Highlights) this one on my skin is a cross between a Blush and a Highlighter
Milani Baked Blush in Red Vino (warm Magenta with Gold Highlights) I can't find this on their Site but it may be available on Ebay or other Places Online - the next best thing if you cannot find Red Vino is the next one:
Milani Baked Blush in Cherry on Top aka Cherry Baked Blush (this is Deeper and Redder than Red Vino. Don't now why Milani changed the name of the Blush but because of the packaging colour (Red bottomed Case), I am certain Cherry on Top is the same as the listed Cherry Baked Blush on their Site.
Milani Baked Blush in Sunrise Serenita (Satin Orange with Gold Highlights)
Milani Baked Blush in Cocoa Felicita (this is the Deepest of all of the Milani Baked Blushes, it is a Plum Brown matted Satin)
Milani Baked Blush in Sunset Passione (this is a Medium Deep Terracotta matted Satin Blush)
Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso (Peach with Gold Highlights) this is only an honorable mention because on my skin it is more a Highlighter than a Blush.
NYX Sweet Cheeks - These came in both Matte and Glow Versions, I have all Matte except for Boom & Bloom in which I got in both versions:
NYX Sweet Cheeks Blush in Fig (Muted Mauve, I love this one)
NYX Sweet Cheeks Blush in Boom & Bloom (Very Deep, Dark Plummy Purple)
NYX Sweet Cheeks Blush in Summer Breeze (Medium Deep Terracotta)
NYX Sweet Cheeks Blush in Totally Chill (A muted Burnt Orange)

I hope this is helpful, 'cause I know the Struggle, heh.
I'm sure a lot of these could be found on Amazon, Ebay and also on the Company Websites.
Happy Shopping! 🛒🛒🛒🤗
Awesome list! Might I add NARS : Liberté ( my personal fave that I've hit pan on twice); Exhibit A and Torrid
Cool choices!
I will have to check those out! 👍
Thanks! 😀
This list is amazing! Thank you for compiling it.
You are more than welcome!😁
I use the Elf blush palette in dark. I’ve seen it in walmart and target. It was 6$ when I got it years ago
What eyeshadows (powder, stick, cream, etc.) would give the best shimmering finish? For reference, I have brown eyes, any colours that would make them stand out?
if you’re talking SHIMMER then urban decay moondust shades are beautiful and so gorgeous on the eyes
Yes. Urban Decay eyeshadow is incredible.
Brown eyes will look stunning in purples or silvers
For micro-fine glitter that shimmers with light from all directions in an ethereal way, I love the Urban Decay Moondust shadows. Space Cowboy is a favorite for me, as the champagne color really works with the green in my hazel eyes. I have a couple of Moondust palettes because I'm a big fan of it, but I generally use it to top most eyeshadow looks. I haven't tried Diamond Dog, their solo brown, but that might be interesting to try. Cosmic always works as a nice topper being a sheer white.
Hourglass' Scattered Light Shadows are similar, but they can go from sheer to more built up for an intense look. They don't have many color options on Sephora though. Might be worth checking out Kulfi's similar Zari Eyes shadow.
If you're looking for foils, I don't have any good recommendations right now!
To enhance your brown eyes, you could play with colors similar or adjacent on the color wheel (so browns, oranges, reds) or complementary, which would be blue/purple. That's not exhaustive and certainly not the only approach. I love using pink and peach on my eyes because I just love the way those colors look. I've always been a barbie girl :)
I like the colourpop duochromes for this. I don’t think they have them at Sephora tho.
Hello, I am about a Maybelline 332 (for shade reference), and I want to find a nice topper shade for my eyes, but I feel like all nude shades always turn off on me. I have some nice matte shades (rip makeupgeeek) that are a sort of yellowish greenish brown (top row on the photo for reference), but I want shimmery colors in that similar hue, preferably medium deep. Thank you for helping.
Maybe not quite brown enough, but Victoria Beckham’s Lid Luster in Velvet is a shimmering bronzy olive green. I love the one I have in a different color - easy to work with and very shimmery.
phytosurgence came out with a bunch of new eyeshadows and they look fantastic/what you're describing you want. You can also msg them for info re: shade selection; they're SO helpful!
thank u! I will look into it
Such a pretty MUG collection! They had some good options 😔
I tend to like taupe and bronze colors that are smoky for fair/light skin but blend in with my natural lid color.
Half Magic Wet Pebble.
Klaavu Glam Brown.
Moira Eureka or Muse.
Sydney Grace has some beautiful cool neutral metallics, e.g. Troops, Safari. They also have a great range of mattes.
ColourPop That's Taupe palette might have a few good options.
Maybe Hourglass Scattered Light in Smoke.
Maybe Kaja Beauty trios in Forest Night or Cold Brew.
Take a look at Mac high dimension eyeshadows and the dazzleshadows. Metallic or sparkly finishes in a variety of neutral tones.
thank u I appreciate it
Urban Decay “Moondust” has several choices and gold/metal tones. I live by all of them. My fav is Solstice, but sounds like u may love Lithium.
thank u I really like lithium
Seconding
Hello fellow olives (free mental image: we all live together in one of those tall narrow jars of marinated olives in the fridge)
I’m hoping we can have a discussion on eyeshadow, specifically what colors do you like and what style of looks do you like to do?
I’m a cool olive, and I get decently tanned in the summer if I’ve been outside. I’m Chinese, so my range of skintone can be pretty fair in the depths of covid winter or very dark after spending a summer on the water (wear sunscreen!). I’ve always struggled with complexion products, but thinking about my experience honestly I also somewhat struggle somewhat to find eyeshadows that look good on my skin. That is one’s that don’t look dusty or wash me out etc.
It clicked with me that it may be due to the olive undertone. I realized this when I was looking at Black content creators and how it’s very frustrating for them to shop for not only complexion products but eyeshadow products as well since many are formulated for white skin and so they’re not pigmented enough for darker skin.
So then I realized why should I keep searching (and spending!) when I can just do it myself? I dye and cut my own hair, I do my own tattoos, I bake my own cakes, I do my own taxes, why not add make my own eyeshadow to the list! So I have begun to make mix my own, and not only have I realized how fun it is to mix up colors, it’s also a pretty simple process. Why didn’t I do this sooner! You should totally give it a try if you’re thinking about it it’s so easy. So now I’m brainstorming what shades to make next, now that I can make literally any color. I feel like some kind of eyeshadow god lol
My everyday look is pretty light, eyebrows and mascara, but for eyeshadow I almost always use a holo very shimmery purple highlighter on my inner corner, focusing on the lower tear duct. Then sometimes I will line the bottom with a matte olive green and smudge it out
I also love to do a purple color wash over the whole lid, or a shimmery chartreusey wash. I also do fancy a peachy orange sometimes.
For neutrals I love a cool dark brown, usually I’ll use brown in place of black. When I’m not doing the purple highlight (rarely) I love a shimmery champagne that’s just barely got the warm yellow. I am almost always wearing color though, I will dampen it down with brown when I want to be more conservative but color is my base I just love it
I think my ideal palette would have lots of rich jewel tones in shimmers, and also the more muted versions of those colors, maybe the matte version of the muted too? with some nice colorful highlight shades, and couple different browns.
What about you? What would your dream palette that works with your skin be?
Also if anyone wants to know how I make my eyeshadow just lmk! I can write it out for you
OP we've got pretty similar colouring! i'm a fair-light neutral-cool olive with a bit of yellow tone, and fairly bright colouring and high contrast (dark hair, dark eyes); i can get a bit tan and veer neutral-warm, but beyond that i mostly burn.
it helps to break down the components of your colouring. i enjoy purples/berries and cool greens because they work nicely with the olive in my skin; pastels makes everything 10x more wearable because the base blends well with my light skin, and this is usually my preferred way to mute colours (over a brown/grey base, which can look dusty/heavy on me fast); i like jewel tones because it plays well with my brighter colouring and high contrast; because of my neutral-cool colouring i can wear neutral-cool, neutral, and neutral warm tones, but very warm tones are a big no-go and sometimes tones that are too cool are tricky too. application style (for example soft edges vs. clean lines) and texture also makes a huge difference in how something shows up.
i really recommend trying to find celebrities, makeup artists, or beauty influencers that have similar colouring to you and seeing what they use! sue me, but i actually get tons of my fav makeup inspiration from kpop MVs (that's actually glamorous AND flattering, and not just some weird 'editorial glam' makeup they throw onto the token asian in magazines), and for more colourful makeup, from 小红书. i used to think bright/unusual colours weren't for me, before i realized it was just the application style that messed it up.
here are my favourite kinds of eyeshadow colours:
here are colours (and textures) i cannot wear:
here are a few of my favourite eyeshadows/eyeshadow palettes:
I love reds/burgundies too. I really wanted to buy huda beauty ruby obsessions but I didn't think I'd get enough wear out of it. Harrymakesitup used it in a video on an olive model and it looked so good. I got Chanel desert rouge (and pourpre profond which has since dried out) to satisfy the itch but I must look into getting a matte or two.
These are all of my favorite colors & palettes/shadows, too, except I love grays & silver. Not all grays are flattering on me, though. Love wet, metal look of silver. I have the same issues with yellow & olive green.
I'm fascinated by how different your (and other commenters) colours of choice are from mine, and it makes me more certain I'm a strongly warm olive! I love rusty oranges, warm browns, olive tones, turquoise and teal, muted yellows, burgundy and plums, and occasionally peachy pinks...
Oh yes that does sound like you probably lean warm, actually that’s funny you’re talking about those fiery shades, an old photo just came up of me on my phone wearing red eyeshadow. Yes it’s “red,” but not a true red or a warm red, it’s one of those very “dark” pinks/blue reds. That’s how I make red work for me. That sounds like a good way to distinguish warm and cool olives… someone else here recently made a post about warm neutral and cool that I felt was also very helpful, I’ll try to find it
I'm NC 20-25 neutral muted olive (warmer as I tan). My most used eyeshadow is kevyn aucoin medium contour powder. I wear neutral brown/grey eyeshadows 95% of the time. I like muted greens and reds. A little warmth is ok but too much isn't flattering. I'm still looking for a bronze eyeshadow that isn't too warm. Orange and peach (and often pink) don't work which pretty much prevents me from buying most palettes (that burnt orange colour that has been in 80% of palette in the last few years). Purples usually make me look jaundiced.
Favourites I can think of:
I really like the deep muted reds in Tartelette in Bloom. Natasha Denona Glam palette was a great purchase for me. I have a few beautiful Nabla duochromes that I haven't decided about yet (unrestricted, daphne, absinthe). Next on my list to purchase are Addiction singles - especially the pearl formula. I'd also like another Chanel quads.
edit: I'm wearing absinthe right now and it's making me happy. It is kind of orangey/peachy but the petrol green shift is so gorgeous.
Oh I love urban decay mushroom! I know exactly what shade you mean by that burnt orange. Honestly it’s saved me money though haha. I feel like with most palettes on the market at least some or even most shades wouldn’t play well with olive undertones.
Oh wow I just looked up nabla’s absinthe and it’s gorgeous. I’m glad it seems that brands are making a few more green shades recently, and not really the emerald green type but the more muted or yellow green, I feel like that works for almost any skin tone
I have mushroom eyeliner too lul I hope it's never discontinued it's so perfect!
Someone posted about cathedral from Clionadh and I want it! If I ever go to the states I'm going to have to buy it several months in advance and ship it to a friend so I get it in time lol
Dusty rose everything for me
Same I'm rather obsessed with dusty rose tones.
I am a WARM light olive and I have extensively searched this topic in my make up life for the past year. What I have learned is that I can wear darker colors as a liner, but other wise darker colors are just not that good for me on the lid. Best colors are lightly warm toned neutrals (colourpop wild nothing), light warm salmon pinks and peaches, light gold, muted browns etc. I have learned that worst colours for me are burgundy’s, stark strong colors. Burgundy being one of the worst shade is actually quite hard cause quite a few palettes have actually these dark reddy browny shades (think like ABH Modern Renessance or Huda Naughty palette). These colors are just not that good for me - too dark, too cool, too red.
best eyeshadow colors for dark skin tone
Key Considerations for Eyeshadow Colors on Dark Skin Tones:
Rich and Vibrant Shades: Darker skin tones can beautifully showcase bold and vibrant colors. Look for jewel tones like emerald green, royal blue, and deep purples.
Warm Neutrals: Shades like bronze, copper, and warm browns complement dark skin tones well and can be used for everyday looks.
Metallics: Gold, bronze, and copper metallics can add a stunning pop and highlight the eyes, making them stand out.
Pastels: While pastels can sometimes wash out darker skin, soft shades like lavender, mint green, and peach can work beautifully when applied with the right technique.
Daring Colors: Don’t shy away from colors like fuchsia, bright orange, and teal. These can create striking contrasts and enhance your overall look.
Recommendations:
Tip: Always use a good eyeshadow primer to enhance color payoff and longevity, especially with vibrant shades.
