TL;DR
Versatility Across Shades
One of the advantages of dark skin tones is their versatility with various lipstick shades. Many users suggest that almost any color can look great if paired with a suitable lip liner [1:1],
[3:9]. This means you have the freedom to experiment with a wide range of colors from bright oranges and hot pinks to deep reds and purples
[1:3].
Recommended Brands and Shades
Several brands and specific shades were highlighted across discussions. Clinique's Almost Lipstick in Black Honey was praised for its universal appeal [2:1]. MAC has multiple shades that suit darker skin tones well, including Taupe, Marrakesh, and Paramount
[3:3]
[4:2]. Mented Cosmetics, a black-owned brand, offers nudes specifically designed for brown skin
[3:3].
Warm Tones and Deep Reds
For those seeking warm-toned lipsticks, shades that lean towards brick red or brown rather than purple or blue are recommended. Maybelline Nude Nuance and L'Oréal Worth It Intense are suggested for achieving this look [4:5]
[4:9]. Mixing cooler shades like MAC Russian Red with brown lipsticks can also create a desired warm tone
[4:1].
Experimentation and Personal Preference
Ultimately, choosing the best shade of lipstick involves personal preference and experimentation. Trying out different shades in stores, using samples, or testing combinations with lip liners can help find the perfect match [2:5]
[3:6]. Whether opting for bold statement colors or subtle everyday nudes, the key is to have fun and embrace the versatility offered by your skin tone
[1:5].
Whatever lipstick you want! You’re gorgeous so it just depends on the event/look you’re going for. You can start off with your shade of nude or jump right into a red lip. Dark colors are my favorite for fall/winter. Whatever you pick will look great!
The best thing about our skin tone is that we can't go wrong, color loves us! I like wearing bright orange and hot hot pinks, and also black and maroon. I have huge lips so I like to make that the focal point on my face and keep the eye makeup to a minimum. If you are looking for just a simple everyday look find a matte nude or one with a smidge of red. But seriously, you can't mess this up so have fun trying out a lot of different colors!
You could wear pretty much anything. I've gotten MAC and bareMinerals lipstick at a discount at TJ Maxx. I have a variety of colors. Get a variety if you can. I like purple and burgundy a lot in the fall. I do a nude lip in the summer. Red for evenings out. Have fun.
Any and all will look great on your skin tone. Pick whatever you like
Im quite partial to pink nude with a dark brown liner but as a black woman as long as you line those lips most Colours are gonna look amazing
Hi! So since starting to get into makeup, I’ve bought a few things. Concealer and a couple different lip sticks, having a hard time though with finding the right lipstick! So would love to hopefully get some opinions, hoping these photos are clear enough! I’d like to wear something that goes with my darker features like hair and eyes, and that also gives a bit of ‘pop’ or contrast against my skin, hopefully that makes sense! Or is what I already have okay?

(Photos 1 & 3) L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Satin Lipstick ‘S’il vous plait’
(Photos 2 & 4) L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Satin Lipstick ‘Perfect Red’
I love s’il vous plaît on you! (Pics 1&3!) The undertone perfectly matches the natural flush in your cheeks and the darkness really balances with the contrast between your dark hair and light skin.
I’m having more trouble figuring out why I don’t love the other one on you as much, it might be the undertone (it’s a bit more of an orangey red, so maybe you just need to wed it to your skin more with an orangey blush?) because it’s not SO light that I’d blame it on just the contrast level thing. It’s still cute don’t get me wrong, so you shouldn’t feel bad about wearing it (and in fact, if you happened to have a really warm toned outfit going on, it might work event better than the first), but you’re asking very picky people’s opinions here lol!
Thanks so much! Between the two I’m feeling like the darker colour maybe works a little better as well! I thought it gave some nice contrast to, hopefully though it wouldn’t be getting too dark with that colour is all! But yeah I don’t know too much either about that red lipstick, feel like it might be too bright of a shade or something? But don’t want to say it’s awful either… I’m sure it could work nice as well with the right tones!
You look lovely I think that colour lipstick goes well your dark features ☺️
Thank you! And yeah I’m starting to think the darker lipstick maybe works a bit better, I just worry it might be getting on too dark which made me unsure 😅
You could try a few different darker shades but I defo think the darker shades look better maybe a plum shade ☺️
Maybe you can try out lipsticks that are not so dark but with cooler undertones? #2 & #4 seem to be quite warm. Also agree with other comments that #1 looks cute on you! When I first started trying out lip shades I wasted a bit of money buying a few products that didn’t work on me, if you’re still trying out which shades work best for your features, maybe you can get some samples and/or try out in stores first? Hope this helps!
Yeah, that sounds like a good idea about the cooler undertones! That might be what would suit best. So thank you! This does help a lot :)
You look really good
I know everyone swears by these but its because they’re THAT good. I recommend Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in shades Black Honey or Pink Honey. I think both would look good on you but I think the Black Honey would look especially good with your dark hair. I’m not a lipstick person but I love these and they really look good on anyone.
Wow, well they sound very promising! I ’d love to try it for myself at some point then. I haven’t seen that brand at the store I’ve gotten my initial stuff from, so I’ll either try other places or order one of those colours online. So thanks for your thoughts and suggestions :)
The 1st photo
recently i bought 2 lipsticks from the creme shop that bummed me out, they were way too light on my medium dark skin tone. it was my bad that i wasn’t able to check the bullet, but the color labels on the outside also looked way deeper than the product. they were in the shades peachy keen & shortbread. sure, i can always use a darker lip liner but i want a one n done look y’know?
anyway, what lipsticks are pigmented enough to show up on u if ur medium dark or deeper? & which lipsticks wash u out so i know the ones to avoid? 😅
here’s my best shades (medium dark, NC40 with neutral undertones)
-peachy nude: sunnies face fluff matte in casual
-brown nude: mac liptensity in well bred brown
-orange: maybelline color sensational in spice for me
too light for me:
-rare beauty lip souffle in courage
-wet n wild megalast in just peachy
Is NC40 really medium dark though? Seems more like tan. I have a hard time thinking most lipsticks would show up on that tone even if they are too light to look good. I'm NC44 and most lipsticks show up on me fine. Maybe the ones you're choosing are too sheer for your preferences.
I’m also confused by this post. I’ve never had a lipstick not show up on me and I’m like NC50…
i guess it’s more of an estimate, i was closer to NC35 when i was younger but i’ve tanned a lot more when i moved to a warmer climate. most foundations / concealers labeled medium deep or dark would match be better.
the pigmentation issue is only when i come across matte lipsticks, but yeah maybe i’ve just had worse luck picking out lipsticks that work for me
I’m also confused on what you mean by not showing up. When I think of a product not showing up I think of something like an unpigmented eyeshadow. I’ve never had a lipstick do this. Do you mean it doesn’t appear like how it does in promo pics?
I’m around a similar coloring to you here are my faves
my favorite lip liner is nyx cold brew and nyx nutmeg! they pair great with the mentioned lipsticks :)
Nude/peachy colours I have that show up without a lipliner-
Mac verve, mac paramount, mac natural born leader, mac film noir, mac Marrakesh, too faced gingerbread girl, nyx cannes, nyx soft spoken
Colours I also think will work but I haven't tried yet-
Mac whirl, dior grand bal, nyx Leon, Maybelline fighter, Bobbi browns lipsticks
I'm around nc50/nw45
As someone who has medium/tan skin Dior grand bal is absolutely beautiful
oop i almost forgot i had too faced gingerbread girl but yes that is a stunning shade on deeper skin tones.
ur putting me on to so many mac shades, most of these i haven’t seen swatched, maybe i should visit the counter sometime soon 😆
I'm an NC42 with neutral undertones and these are my favourite lipsticks that are one and done for me:
And NYX Cold Brew lip liner is my favourite for lighted nude lipsticks.
if you buy a lip color too light a tip that helps me out is i line with a brown liner blend it out real well and then the color suits u. u should try it! it makes every color work on me.
Mac whirl and taupe
NYX espresso, Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk 3, Natasha Denona Lala
Most lipsticks smudge into cool tones like purple or pinks. I'm searching for a deep red lipstick which matches the tones above which smudges into a WARM tone, which means more on the brown side rather than on the purple or blue side. Kind of a brick red colour.
The search is long drawn, Need this lipstick as the only red in my collection so that I can mix it with other colours or wear it standalone. Something which matches a warm olive skin tone
Did you try Mac Paramount and Marrakesh?
I honestly mix Mac’s Russian red in a brown lipstick to create this colour. However, there’s one by Bobby brown that matches this shade but not quite there
Russian red seems like a cool toned one. That's the problem😭
Can you share the name or link for bobbi brown one?
Maybelline Nude Nuance is that girl fr
I use it alreaadddyyyy! Need something darker😌
Lazy Sunday or Snooze your Alarm then
From Loreals Liquid Lippie Range
Maybelline more cedar
l’oréal worth it intense for this one maybe?
I have a hard time finding a lip colour that suits me, anyone have a recommendation for this skin tone?
mauve maybe or another purple/pinky color
no I have absolutely no idea but god had to comment to tell you how GORGEOUS you are
I'm not good at that, but after trying to imagine you with different colors, I'd say something light, close to your skin tone, something that doesn't pop out too much. Or go black, always works.
My lips are slightly dark pink and some pink tones look so pale on me, they make me look like a corpse. Do you guys wear concealer before the lipstick? Or do you have any other tips to find your colour shades? The Fenty and Kylie lip products are so cute, but I'm worried about buying something that won't suit me
I would first find celebs/models with a similar skin tone as yourself, then look for a makeup look that they have worn that resonates with you and your looksmaxxing goals.
I would then visit Sephora & Mac and speak to one of their makeup artists, they will help you find not only a lipstick but a whole combination of products (liner, gloss, etc).
*you will likely need to use a lip-liner with most lipsticks, it helps colors look more natural with your skintone and as a bonus makes your lips look defined. I recommend never over-lining, it doesn't look good IRL and can add unnecessary complications to your final look.
I would suggest starting off with Chestnut (a lovely brown-ish color that pairs with so many lipstick shades) and Vino (a plum-ish shade that blends well with so many lipstick shades) both are Mac.
Monica Ravichandran on YouTube/Instagram/tiktok has some great recommendations for more pigmented lips. She has a pretty good understanding of colour theory to avoid ashy makeup
Yess love her!
As a black woman of color, I put a brown lip liner on before any lip color that is not clear. Find a lip liner that is 2 shades darker than your skin tone and line your lips with that before applying lip color. For the most part, all colors look good with the brown outline.
I dab some foundation around the outline of my mouth prior to lipstick. You can choose whether or not you’d like to wear lipliner, it’s not a requirement for POC, although wearing lighter shades may not be as flattering as other shades. Try out some sheer tints first. I think a sheer berry tint is universally flattering and “natural”.
I have tan skin (with olive undertones) and I go for deep + vibrant reds and purples, pinks/oranges/nudes don’t complement my face well and make me look low contrast (my lips are fairly small as well so it’s extra important that the colors pop) I don’t use concealer or anything, just apply to my lips normally. Also hot take but matte lips > glossy ones, the colors seem to stand out on me more when I stay matte.
I’m really not great at make up and only do eyeliner, mascara and recently trying lipsticks - please help I don’t know which colors look most flattering on my skin tone? I believe I am a warm undertone but Im not a fan of orange/yellow based lip colors on me although google recommends going for those if I’m actually a warm undertone. Please be kind, I’m a beginner when it comes to lipsticks! Thanks :~)
I think they all look great the first 2 are my favorites
thank you!!! :) yes i love the red in the first pic, the middle pinkish one i’m not crazy about on me personally but if it looks good from others point of view I want to be open to trying it out more!
I thought all three shades were different shades of red. If you like red, try one with a touch more orange instead of blue. Here are two shades of red...one has more blue so it's a wine tint and the other has more orange. You can see they look very similar, just slightly different undertones. The left is cool and the right is warm. That said you can absolutely wear any color that YOU like, regardless of anyone else's opinion. Makeup is to make the wearer feel good. 😊
I think the pink just brightens your face more but totally wear all three!
The colors are all pretty but the 2nd picture looks best on you because your skin looks light olive and the lipstick in the 2nd image looks like a warmer shade of red, whereas the lipstick in the 1st and 3rd image look like cool toned.
Yes that’s where i get confused it’s a bit hard for me to tell my tone cus i can get really pale but then when i do sunburn it turns into a tan after and my veins look mostly green but some spots are blue so i’m thinking warm undertone maybe neutral? But light olive sounds about right too! Lol i’m so new to all of this and finding the right colors but thank you this is very helpful :)
Btw, you're gorgeous. I like your full brows. My husband and daughter have full brows. My husband's are dark like yours. He's Irish ethnicity. If I had to guess for you I would say Italian or of mixed ethnicity to get your beautiful features. You're doing fine with your makeup. Your eye makeup is perfect, the wingtip eyeliner is spot on. The only differences I can see between your three images is the lipstick shades.
It has more to do with your undertone. For example, I'm pale but my undertone is pink (cool). My brother is light but his undertone is yellow (warm). The veins in his wrist would look green and mine look blue. I have charts for every skin tone from palest to darkest. I will post them. These are 5 cards of different skin tones with two rows each. I tried to put them into one document to post all at once.
I like the first and the third pic.
i’m thinking those are my favs as well, thanks for the reply! :)
Second one is the best
1 and 3
All pictures with natural hair color and indoor natural light.
Top row warm lipsticks (Merit Tiger and Vermillion)
Middle row neutral lipsticks (Merit Black Tie and L’Avenue)
Bottom row cool lipsticks (Merit Fashion and Power)
I would love to get any thoughts on which lipstick range flatters my skintone most. Any standout shades or ones to avoid? Thanks in advance!
Thank you! Any thoughts on what makes middle right work better than middle left? Definitely more people are saying middle right over left even though the shades are similar, so I’m curious what makes that one win.
love the first one (left). Looks so pretty on you. I think warmer colors looks so pretty with your skin tone.
Thank you! I do think that one works particularly well with my hair and freckles color!
I second this! My eye was immediately drawn to the middle right as the most flattering color
Thank you! I’m also so excited to try the new Glossier Black Cherry balm because I’ve heard it’s similar to L’Avenue!
Thanks for your input! This is seeming like a common answer. I know people could partly be influenced by the fact that those are the two photos I’m smiling in, but I would say a commonality of those is that they have the most brown content of all the colors, maybe the most muted for that reason!
The deeper and muted warm shades look best on you in these photos
Thank you! By that, do you mean the first one? Or the middle row can be described as neutral-warm maybe?
Top right and middle left look best to me. They're more muted tones.
Thanks, I am confused, though…the top right is a very bright warm red. But I know colors can show up differently on people’s screens!
This 👍 I’d also say the top right warm bright red would work when the outfit demands and you feel like it, French girl outfit for eg. Tailored shirt, jeans, shoes, gold earrings
I feel I’ve heard more orange-red lips described as “French” style. So is that a thing? I will say I like the kind of classic, feminine, yet a little laid back/imperfect vibe that style often has. I do love brands like Sézane!
I have olive/medium skin tone with warm/golden undertone (basically Indian skin color ) . I’m looking for lipsticks of these shades in the picture which will look exactly like the photo on my skin tone . As an olive skin tone girly it’s difficult to find exact shades that people with lighter skin tone wear . Can anyone tell me what can be the exact/closest lip shade perfect for me ?
Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Medium
Yes! Also MAC whirl lipstick

I never do my lips but when i do it feels really weird on me the only one who does suit me is this a really dark wine red i have a really dull and i may have olive/cold undertones thanks a lot !
Visit your local or nearby comestic retailers. They do offer free lipstick samples/testers you can use, this way you can find a lipstick color that suits you before buying.
I’d say to go into Mac. Especially if you like reds. They have very beautiful colors. Even if you want other types of lip products they have a good variety and they are pretty good at helping you out. I don’t know what type of lipsticks you like, but they have typical cream lipsticks, liquid lipsticks, and other stuff. I’m a red lipstick gal and use the Mac Ruby Woo and the Mac Russian Red. I think it’s best if you go to the store and have them evaluate what would be best based on your skin tone and stuff like that.
MAC cosmetics made me fall in love with lipsticks. So many gorgeous colors.
Without a picture of your face there’s not much anyone can suggest
how can i put one ????
You need to make a new post and look for the link looking thing and then choose a pic of yourself. Make sure it’s in good lighting. When you’re responding to this you can see the link in the bottom left corner.
Based on the fact that the only one you like is dark I would guess that you have a strong contrast in your colours and that really highlighting that could be a good strategy.
The kinda tricky thing with dark lipsticks (I looove a semidark moody winered) is the infamous ”butthole-lip” where the colour loses grip on the inside of your lips/closest to mouth and the distinct shape of well a butthole.
I recomend liquid lipsticks like maybeline super stay ink, I have used them for years and it is amazing for the prizepoint.
Otherwise I would recomend less pigmented and bold colours and more of the warm kinda rusty colour-palet. Not orange or yellow but closer to brown/neutral. Those would blend better with a cold olive is my theory.
This is all highly theoretical and only based on description but hopefully you can use some of it at least!
best shade of lipstick for my dark skin tone?
Key Considerations for Choosing Lipstick Shades for Dark Skin Tones:
Undertones: Identify whether your skin has warm, cool, or neutral undertones. This will help you select shades that complement your complexion.
Bold Colors: Dark skin tones can pull off bold and vibrant colors beautifully. Consider shades like deep reds, plums, and bright pinks.
Nude Shades: For nude lipsticks, opt for shades that are a few shades deeper than your natural lip color. Look for caramel, mocha, or chocolate tones.
Metallics and Glosses: Metallic shades, like bronze or copper, and glossy finishes can add dimension and shine to your lips.
Trial and Error: Don’t hesitate to try different shades to see what you feel most confident in. Swatching on your lips or testing in natural light can help.
Recommended Shades:
Tip: Always consider the finish (matte, satin, gloss) based on your preference for comfort and longevity. A satin finish can be more hydrating, while matte finishes tend to last longer.
