TL;DR
Popular Foundations for Dark Skin
Fenty Beauty is frequently mentioned as a go-to brand for individuals with dark skin tones due to its extensive shade range specifically designed for black women. It provides options that cater to various undertones, making it easier to find a match [4:3]. Another popular choice is the Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation, known for its full coverage and long-lasting formula
[1:1].
Drugstore Options
For those seeking more affordable options, Maybelline Fit Me foundation is recommended, with shade 350 suggested for caramel complexions [4:1]. Black Opal cosmetics, available at Ulta Beauty, offers foundation sticks that are well-suited for darker skin tones
[4:2]. Additionally, Elf and Revlon have been praised for their drugstore foundations that offer good coverage and shade variety
[4:2]
[4:5].
Foundations for Olive Undertones
Finding foundations for olive undertones can be challenging, but several users have found success with specific products. Nars Stromboli and Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk in shade 6.0 are highlighted for their suitability for medium olive tones [3:1]
[3:3]. CoverFX is also noted for its olive tone-friendly range
[3:4].
Mixing and Customization
For those struggling to find the perfect match, some users suggest mixing foundations or using color mixers to adjust undertones. Adding blue mixer drops can help make foundations more green, which may benefit those with strong olive undertones [3:9]. This approach allows for customization and can help achieve a closer match to one's natural skin tone.
High-End vs. Affordable Choices
While high-end brands like Giorgio Armani and Fenty Beauty offer excellent options for dark skin tones, they can be expensive. For those on a budget, exploring drugstore brands such as Maybelline, Elf, and Revlon can provide satisfactory results without breaking the bank. Il Makiage is another option that, although pricier, offers a try-before-you-buy model to ensure a perfect match [4:4].
i confidently wear armani luminous silk in shade 11 all year round. (i’m a rare black girl that doesn’t tan :/ just sun burn real bad) does anyone know some good full coverage foundations for someone my skin tone that are actually neutral? i can share some of my concealer shades as well if that helps.
follow monica ravichandran on youtube! she’ll have you covered
I don’t really wear full coverage and don’t have a match in the Armani foundation so it’s a bit hard to picture what depth you are. I wear Lisa Eldridge shade 23 so I’m in the medium deep category too. Have you tried the Estée Lauder Double Wear or Bobbi Brown Longwear? They are both full coverage but I’m not sure how well a shade will work for you. The Bobbi brown I’ve tried in the past runs warm and may need a blue pigment to adjust.
Is it js me or there are rarely any foundations for darker shades available. And I am talking about brown - light brown which is basically the skin color of most people here. It's pretty hard to find a brand that actually has a good shade range so if any of y'all use a similar foundation please drop the name.
I prefer using BB creams and skin tints because most foundations I buy from around here leave a super white cast or look weird. I use Ayna Beauty skin tint and BB cream from Sapphire. Both of these products give a very lasting natural finish and don't make my base look overdone. They don't have much tone variety in FitMe foundations here either but you can try the shades 125 or 128.
The best foundation is fouji cement i don’t know if that comes in a brown shade
Am also looking for brand with wide shade range. It's hard to find good ones here
Heard alot about MM foundation but didn't use personally.I useJ. BB cream and it works fine for me.
Massarat Misbah foundation is the best for brown skin tones. I’ve been using it since six years never found a better foundation
I'm African American but my skin tone is very olive and a bit on the lighter side. And when I say olive I mean GREEN as hell! It's super hard trying to find a shade that fits me. In the ten years I've been wearing makeup, I haven't found ONE shade. I thought I might be the problem, but a lot of foundation ranges fail to include olive skin tones which sucks. I usually just buy yellow undertoned stuff because that's better than pink. Are there any foundation ranges you guys like that include olive undertones? Thanks!
To help, I'm currently using ABH foundation stick in the shade "honey" but it's luckily pretty neutral on me even though on my neck you can tell it's wrong. A tad dark but the lighter ones had the wrong undertone so I was looking messy, and the one under had olive undertones but was way too dark. The quest continues!
I use the Morphe foundation in the shade F2.50. I don’t love the formula, but it’s the absolute closest shade match I’ve ever found for my super olive skin. Definitely try that range if you’re looking for deeper olive shades!
It looks like we are super close in shade depth, and I lean olive and yellow so we might be skin twins!! I've spent a lot of time sampling foundations so here are some suggestions:
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk in shade 6.0 is the holy grail for medium olive-AF tones. It is too light for me and not yellow enough; I can get it right if I mix, but this is way too expensive for me to not get right on the first try. One of my best friends is of north African/Mediterranean descent and is the most olive person I know, and this is her perfect match. Also this shade is available in a mini version, which makes it a little less painful I suppose.
Nars Stromboli but ONLY in the All Day Luminous Weightless formula was my perfect match. Olive, claims "neutral" but all Nars foundations have a yellow tint in my experience. It sat well and I found it more mattifying than "luminous" which was fine with my skin type, but I never purchased the full size. Nars makes their formulas to be applied optimally with your fingers, and I'm real petty and do not like that with my daily routine so I passed.
Fenty's medium olive shade 290 was a bit light in depth and not warm enough; I mixed it with the shade 300 (two sephora sample pots of each) and it was a pretty good match. Wasn't a huge fan of the texture and finish, just a personal preference but it was fine overall and I finished the samples with few complaints.
I currently wear Make Up For Ever Ultra HD in shade Y365, which is a little light in depth but I warm it up with some bronzer. Perfect amount of olive, yellow, and beige. Buildable and comfortable; I wore it on my wedding day and only noticed it breaking up by hour 8 once my setting powder had been breached (I blame the rain).
Sometimes I'm in a hurry and just cannot spend time blending, say 3 out of 5 days of the work week, and I need a quick powder foundation to slap on with a buffing brush before I run out the door. I wear MAC Studio Fix powder in C40, which is a tad too dark, but not quite noticeable if I bring it down my neck. It is also a good match for me in the summer so it'll be my primary go to when I get some color. This plus some MAC Fix+ sprayed liberally to avoid looking cakey and I'm out the door.
Hope this helps! I've tried some others but narrowed it down to give you a moderately long essay vs. a novel. Happy to answer any questions as well, good luck!
Whoa this was an awesome reply! Thanks for all the recommendations.
Just looked up the Nars Stromboli one and I think you're right, we might be skin twins! That's the shade undertone I'm looking for and actually looks like it'd match me! I'll have to look into that Giorgio Armani one, too. I'm a college student who works full time at minimum wage, but with how hard it's been to find one that matches I'll definitely save up for anything!
I should specify, my dad's side of the family is Nigerian and they have this beautiful deep skin but very olive. My mom's side is 100% Irish with VERY pink undertones. I'm on the cusp of medium/light but my neck is way darker than my face and I have rosy cheeks, so I'm always skewed on which shade to buy and usually match to my neck, but overall I'm very olive.
I really do love Makeup Forever so I'll look into that one! I love their concealers. For some reason, Fenty products break me out which is so sad as I want to love it and support my Queen Rhi but I just can't! :(
If I was super picky I'd try to find an olive foundation stick as my skin is quite oily but I've learned through the foundation journey that sometimes we have to settle, lol!
Thank you again for all the recommendations! This, plus the blue mixer drops to finish up the foundation bottles I have left, I think I'm set for life! You and the others are superstars! <3
Happy to help! The Fenty primer broke me out something fierce and the setting powder looked just awful on me, so I hear you on the serious FOMO on her products!
I also have quite a bit of redness on my face, but I'm the opposite of you in that my face is usually darker than my neck. Depending on the time of year my skin fluctuates like crazy from NC30 to NC42, though I've been more on the lighter side for the last couple years since I don't get outside much. The MUFE does a good job covering the redness to match my neck without looking too full coverage if I sheer it out enough. Get a sample pot and see how you like it, I can't recommend it enough! And let me know how it goes :)
Wow I was just thinking about this exact same sentiment and my struggle to find a super green olive undertone foundation!! It definitely sucks that they never consider our undertone in Foundation!!!!!
OP, just for reference, what is the depth of your skintone in reference to MAC foundations? I’m NC42 and obviously it’s too orange for me but the closest thing I’ve found that’s olive enough is the CoverFX Natural Finish Foundation in G+60. The +G range is meant to be for olive undertone :) tbh, it definitely could be more green!! Maybe we just have to try mixers :/
Thanks everyone for the suggestions on here too - they’re great :)
Gonna also give a shoutout to CoverFX for their olive tone friendly range
Hey sorry for late response! I also have used NC42, but you're right when you say it's ORANGE!!
Have you tried the “C” shades they go 1-8. NC 50 is too orange but c8 is perfect and very olive. Maybe you could try C6 or C7
Thank you! I’ve seen a few cool yellow/olive folk try the C range, so maybe I’ll try it! Is the C meant to lean more olive/neutral?
For a quick fix for your current foundations, you can add a few drops of blue mixer to make your foundations more green :)
The la girl one is cheap and pigmented, but a lot of people swear by the makeup forever mixing drops.
Try Nars!
Hello I am sorta new to makeup and was wondering to any darker people out there how yall be finding the good shades of makeup in drugstores? Personally im more of a caramel but everything I find either doesn’t show up, or makes me look pale (repost)
Also Ulta beauty sells Black Opal cosmetics, an old school black makeup line. I hear the foundation sticks are devine.
Also Elf has a really good drugstore foundation.
Use Fenty Beauty it was made for black women of different shades
after years, i finally settled on il makiage. its more than I want to spend on anything but I like how it blends. try it. they can send you colors twice or three times to help you find a match
That’s a tough one, for foundation I use high end but I make them try so many to find my perfect shade lol I heard revlon is really good though for drugstore brand. Specifically this one https://www.amazon.com/Revlon-ColorStay-Cover-Foundation-Medium/dp/B07B4P4L6D
Drugstore try Maybeline fitme foundation. I’d guess you’re about 350 if you’re carmel complexioned.
I just got my Hands on Fenty beauty Pro filter Foundation in the shade 130 and here are my thoughts…I originally wanted to go for soft lit but i have oily to combination skin and i already have those same finish foundation so I went for the matte version.
Shade : it is described as light with olive undertone, and my skintone reference is light - light medium with yellowish olive undertone…i have also heard lots of people said it was too yellow and i was like wait that might be great for my skin with redness…and yes it is yellow like bright yellow…n i love it!!! Yes technically i should have gone for 140 bcos everyone said its best for olive skin….true olive shade goes grey on my skin due to my redness and my neck appears more yellow….shade 130 is abit lighter than my skin tone but it does oxidised and I purposely chose this shade bcos i know that will happen and eventually it does oxidised and match my skin …
Wearability: its not that great….while application it didn’t cling onto to my dry patches even though my skincare game is up….other foundation doesn’t do that…n first application didn’t give me much coverage….medium with to full coverage…but it can get abit cakey and it dries off really quickly so u gotta go section by section and u might prefer damped sponge more than brush bcos its very drying
Longevity : it lasted on my skin for about 5-6 hours and my face became oily and greasy….
Is it worth the money…nope…i only bought it bcos of the wide range of shades….
I want to love Fenty foundations because I can actually find shades that suit me in both summer and winter. However, it does this thing where it settles in all the micro lines between my pores and doesn’t seem to want to stick to the actual skin, if that makes sense. Basically, my face ends up looking like hardened clay soil that has cracks all through it.
I actually love the finish of the Fenty powder foundation I have, but when I last went to look for a winter shade, I couldn’t find any due to it apparently being reformulated.
Yess samee even though i have super oily skin on Tzone it was still too drying for me ..yes later due to my oil its reduce…but ngl i prefer this over Nars soft matte foundation…bcos Nars soft matte use to separate..this didn’t do that
Match is good tho
Yea match is good…at first it looked light but after minutes in adjusted to my skin
This kind of buttery lemon-y shade really suits olives who are neutral leaning a bit cool!
I've worn it in the past but I tossed it because of how it wears. It was definitely a good match here too though.
This is my best shade and best damn foundation! Try mixing a little of a glowy base. I mix the charolette tilburry hollywood flawless filter teensy bit with one pump of this foundation. Also. Try doing the katie jane hughes priming the brush technique with this foundation, it looks undetectable, doesnt look dry and you can set witha powder if you're oily. Hope thie helps!
from top to bottom: it cosmetics matte cc cream in tan warm, the new milani conceal+perfect skin tint stick in shade 12, fenty eaze drop in shade 11, huda beauty easy blue in shade 340G baklava, and makeup by mario foundation shade 15n
it cosmetics: this is the most muted foundation i’ve ever found. i consider myself to be pretty muted but on some days, this is too gray even for me. it’s still my top choice if i want full coverage and it’s definitely long wearing which i need. i have dry skin but it’s not too drying as long as i prep well underneath.
milani: i literally just got this and i already love it. this isn’t too muted or too saturated so i think it could work for a lot of people. it looks more yellow in the pics than irl. it’s basically undetectable when i blend it out but it has good coverage for a skin tint. i have a lot of dark spots and you basically can’t see them with this, but it’s still really lightweight. this is the lightest shade that’s marked olive but from the pics online i think there are other shades throughout the range that have potential.
fenty: this looks really orange in the pics, i’d say it’s more peachy irl. peach is kind of my nightmare but this is the closest match i have in this skin tint. i’ll probably keep using it because it really doesn’t look like a bad match unless you’re really close to me, but i’m going to use the milani more
huda: this is fine. this is also more peachy than the pics show but it doesn’t look that bad when it’s all over my face. i either do very light coverage or very full coverage so i just don’t have a need for something that i would say is very medium coverage. my skin also gets dehydrated really easily and this dries out my skin way more than i expected. it’s just very very average to me.
mbm: this looks like a pretty good warm olive shade in the pic but i’d say it’s a liiiiitle more orange than that irl. i’ve had this foundation before and liked it but the formula feels kind of different now? it’s more liquidy than i remember which i don’t exactly love. it also smells kind of weird. this is also a pretty medium coverage foundation but i think it has more coverage than huda. huda is more buildable though imo.
idk why the bottom 3 shades looks so much different on camera than in person but i hope these can still be helpful. it cosmetics and milani are definitely my most favorite but i still want to make the others work. i plan on using up the fenty with some blue and yellow corrector, but does anyone have any tips for the huda and mario? the shades aren’t that far off but since i don’t like the formulas i don’t really know what to do with them.
Milani looks like a perfect match! I agree about Fenty eaze drop looking slightly peachy. My shade also does pull a bit orange/peach on me, but I use such a small amount that it usually doesn't look too bad.
thank you for posting this! i def wanna try the milani after seeing your swatches, not sure between shades 9-11 in winter but a good match for me rn is about face lm2 olive
the milani is just bordering on being too light for me. like if i get even a little bit of a tan i think it would be too light. the pics of shade 12 is darker online than in person imo so i would go with the darker shades personally
The Milani and MBM swatches look really good. Thanks for showing these.
Thank you for your service!!!!! 🙏🏾

I’m trying to find the perfect shade for my warm, medium olive complexion. After a lot of trial and error, I’ve realised that shades like NARS Stromboli, MAC Face and Body C3, Maybelline foundations in 220, and Armani Luminous Silk in 6—all commonly recommended for my skin tone—tend to be slightly too dark for me.
While they might look okay initially, I’ve noticed that once I add bronzer, these shades often end up looking muddy and overly dark on my skin. I’m struggling to find a foundation or concealer that matches me better, and I feel like the middle shade in the picture (the concealer mixed with the blue mixer) is the closest to what I’m looking for.
Does anyone else have similar struggles? I’ve experimented so much, but I still haven’t been able to find my exact shade. I’m looking for a very light, dewy coverage foundation that’s maybe a shade lighter than the ones typically recommended for my skin tone. Any suggestions would be super helpful!
ABH Luminous Foundation shade 270C. It’s olive and a shade or so lighter than Luminous Silk in 6. I would describe it as a medium coverage, but you can apply it very thinly or mix it with a dewy primer/serum/moisturiser to thin it out.
Thank you so much.
When you go into to the store if they have Anastasia try shade 100N and go from there. It is very neutral so it will likely be too light but it will show what direction to go. Haus labs neutrals are also a good starting point. I know many swear by NARS but I tried every shade with no luck. Also, I bring a mirror and make up wipes. I put some unblended on the opposite of my face and go outside and look at it in the light then in the car. And check the blended after 30 minutes because sometimes they oxidize to different shades.
Yeah that’s a good idea. I need to go to store rather than relying online swatches.
I forgot to add use neck for color matching also. Sometimes when it is close it helps.
still cant believe after all these years foundations can be so OINCH
I think you’re light-medium. Try searching for posts here catering to that depth. There are lots of options these days.
I think i know the problem. You're bright/saturated and not desaturated. Use the green color corrector, not the blue one. Also mix what you have with any foundation that is lighter and close to your needs. Lastly you can get the white color corrector to lighten.
Not sure who is recommending what you're trying, but go into Ulta or Sephora and test the shades yourself.
Here's an olive-skintoned people tip:
Find any foundation in a formulation you love that's as close to your overall skin color as possible—which usually means its "value" matches (not too light/not too dark) but it's still looking orange (or pink) on you.
Get a bottle of Mehron Makeup Liquid Face and Body Paint (n your case you can get white to lighten what you have) in green and/or blue to use as a foundation pigment corrector. Europe source. Mehron is used by makeup artists in the film industry. Mehron also carries cream foundation many here have found relief with not only in color match but also in affordability. [In the drop down, select for Light Olive, Mid-Light Olive, or Medium-Olive Cream Foundation]
General principle: Use green if you have a bright/saturated skintone. Use blue if you have a muted/desaturated skintone. Either is better than none to adjust an existing foundation that is closest to your needs to an olive-undertone. Barely 1/16th of a drop per daily foundation application will allow you to achieve your color match.
It works for all foundations, will last five years and save you $$$ as it is only $6.95. These are completely different than "color correctors" meant to be applied to the skin before applying foundation and can change the formulation of your foundation.
The recommendation above is pure pigment meaning it will not change the formulation of your foundation.
Oh thank you so much. This has been so helpful. I think I’ll get a white and green mixer and experiment with the shades I have.
Have fun, let me know how it goes.
Can anyone recommend a good budget friendly medium to full coverage foundation that comes in deeper shades.. (so tired of not being able to find my shade)
Flormar foundation ita a turkish brand.
Where can I buy it in store? So I could go and shade match?
Al Fatah has flormar available
It is everywhere. What is ur loc.
Flormar doesn't have medium to full coverage foundations 😬 Other than that it's a great brand. Also their foundations don't oxidise!!!! I love their HD Invisible foundation *it's low coverage
Unfortunately if you’re looking for deeper shades you will not find them in any local brand that is budget friendly and BDS safe. You can see if LA girl or makeup revolution are BDS friendly. Depending on how tan you are maybe the darkest shade in bba by suleman might work. same for massarat misbah. Zero makeup also makes a dark shade palette but its cream and horrible for summer
Thanks for letting me know
Tbh I would kinda use a hack of sorts for this so when you go down to memon foundation near FB area they sell these fake knock off LA Girl pro concealer pens I would get three or four the in the shades green , red , orange and the lightest yellow one
Next I would also get a BB cream or something from a brand I like J. Isn't half bad you can also try the miss rose ones
First I would just mix up the la girl concealers to get my shade on the back of my hand Next I would use that on all my problem areas , even do an under layering if you want using extra orange around your mouth and eye bags can really help with that greyness that shows up later
Anyway then mix the remaining concealer on my hand with the bb cream Not too much at all just enough to give me one coat with a soft sponge
Dab that all over and blend as necessary Set it with a powder if you want but I would air dry it first
See if that works for you the fake LA girl ones are not actually the brand so they're not going to Israel anyway but do be careful they don't suit everyone use a tester to be sure it won't have a reaction on your skin
Hey thanks it sounds like a good hack. I do have all these products already will try it tomorrow for sure.
Masarrat Misbah
I got 1 from Kashees recently, seems good.
I've always struggled to find good matches as i have light-medium olive skin and a significant olive/green undertone. All foundations I've tried have either warm (red/orange/brown) or cool (blue/pink) undertones. Anyone have any brand or shade suggestions? Appreciate it!
Check out the Olive MUA subreddit for recommendations. You might have to get a very yellow foundation and mix with a blue corrector.
Hmm yes i thought so but i also couldn't find where to buy these blue pigments. I could only find 1 brand and they were so expensive
Elf has a blue colour corrector and LA Girl has a blue foundation adjuster.
I love my Armani Luminous Silk 4.5 I'm also a fair olive. I have the Lisa Eldridge but I only use that when I need more coverage.
Lisa Eldridge has a great shade range for olive undertones in her foundation and also on the skin tint line. Quite expensive, but very effective products. Before having found this, I used to mix drugstore foundations like L’Oréal perfect match with blue and yellow pigments to customize my ideal shade. It works great, but so much effort..
Where do you buy your blue and yellow pigments from?x
I’m using Erinde Liquid Foundation Mixing Pigment from Amazon. But there are many similar products available from other brands
Here you go! :)
Oh whoa thanks!!
I'm new to reddit, can you tell??🤔😂
Go to Olive MUA! And I wear Mac foundations Studio fix tech and Studio Radiance. Also Too Faced Born This way.
Thank you so much!!x
I feel the need to keep trying!
I was told ilmakiage (not sure if that’s spelled right😬) was the best for matching your skin tone. Tried them once and it was a bit too dark but maybe I’ll give it another go 🤷🏻♀️
I resisted wearing foundation until literally my late 20s because of this but then a friend took me to Sephora and had them scan my face with their fancy little skin-analyzing-thingy. Idk if they're accurate for everyone but honestly it really helped me narrow it down. I probably would be dead before I figured out I had yellow undertones and that's why everything looked a little off
I keep ending up with shades that are too light, too yellow, or too dark 😫 it’s frustrating
Same, i got scanned at sephora and it turned out too dark but right undertone. Second time I went in, an employee swatched multiple foundation on a clear glass plate and held it up against my skin but it turned out to be too much peach on me.
Oh my goodness, I never knew this was even a thing. My skin tone is IMPOSSIBLE to match. I'll definitely have to look into this.
Skin scanner… interesting 🤔 I’ll have to look into that. Thank you!
Il Makiage quiz
Changed my life especially in the pandemic. Sephora was closed. No stores let you try anything on.
Il Makiage quiz identified my undertones (always been told yellow, turns out is yellow and red). And I found the perfect shades for me and my roomies and my mom.
I’d definitely recommend it. They have a great return policy.
I’ve been seeing them constantly in my Facebook and IG ads so have been kinda nervous to try them out. How’s the coverage? I’ve got a gnarly facial scar that I just wanna try to make invisible as much as possible 😅
I love them for matching honestly. They did a great job with the online quiz.
Coverage is good- it ranges with the quiz too. But between Milk hydrogrip and the foundation- I would have high hopes for it delivering what you want!
Findation.com is an awesome tool to use once you find the foundation that suits you.
I’ll keep that in mind. Thank you!
best foundation for dark skin tone
Key Considerations for Choosing Foundation for Dark Skin Tones
Shade Range: Look for brands that offer a wide variety of shades specifically for dark skin tones. It's essential to find a foundation that matches your undertone (cool, warm, or neutral).
Undertones: Identify your undertone to select the right shade. Dark skin can have red, blue, or golden undertones. Test shades on your jawline to see how they blend with your skin.
Formula: Consider your skin type (oily, dry, combination) when choosing a formula. Matte foundations work well for oily skin, while hydrating or dewy foundations are better for dry skin.
Finish: Decide on the finish you prefer—matte, satin, or dewy. Matte finishes are great for a shine-free look, while dewy finishes give a more radiant appearance.
Longevity: Look for long-wearing formulas that can withstand heat and humidity, especially if you live in a warm climate.
Recommendations:
Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation: Known for its extensive shade range and excellent formula, it provides a soft matte finish and is suitable for various skin types.
NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation: Offers a radiant finish with a good selection of shades for darker skin tones. It's lightweight and provides buildable coverage.
Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation: A budget-friendly option that works well for oily skin and has a decent range of shades for darker skin tones.
MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation: A classic choice with a wide shade range and good coverage, suitable for various skin types.
When trying foundations, always test them in natural light to ensure the best match!
