TL;DR
Modern Metal Shooters
For those looking for modern games that capture the metal-infused, demon-slaying essence of Doom, titles like Warhammer 40K Boltgun and Space Marine 2 were recommended [1:1],
[1:3]. These games offer intense action and heavy weaponry, perfect for players who enjoy the adrenaline rush of Doom.
Classic FPS Homages
If you're interested in games that pay homage to the classic FPS style of Doom, Dusk is a recently released indie shooter that captures the essence of older games like Doom and Quake [2:1]. Star Wars Dark Forces also offers a similar feel to early Doom and Wolfenstein games
[2:2].
Stylish Combat and Unique Mechanics
Games like Bulletstorm encourage stylish kills with crazy guns and gameplay reminiscent of Doom and Unreal Tournament [4:2]. Witchfire, although not as frequently mentioned, could offer a unique twist on the FPS genre with its magical elements
[5:5].
Single Player Experiences
For single-player FPS experiences, COD Black Ops 6 campaign and Starfield provide engaging narratives alongside their shooting mechanics [5:4],
[5:1]. While Starfield isn't solely an FPS, its combat mechanics are praised for being fun and diverse.
These recommendations span a variety of styles and eras, ensuring that fans of Doom can find something new yet familiar to dive into. Whether you prefer the classic feel or modern twists, there's a game out there that will satisfy your craving for fast-paced, visceral action.
i love kickass metal shooters where you fuck shit up and blast the guts out of demons or whatever, i dont care about story gameplay but if the game has it the more the merrier.
does anyone have any metal fps games like doom or something like devil may cry where you jusr have bigass guns and cool melees to slaughter hordes?
edit: thank you all so much for all of the replies and recommendations i appreciate them all so much, sorry i cant reply individually im really busy but i cant wait to get round to playing some of these games!
Prodeus is exactly what you're looking for. Great music, great weapons, it's awesome
Space Marine 2 sounds right up your alley.
Ultrakill
I was just boutta say that!
Yeah that one.
Ion Fury
Warhammer 40K Boltgun maybe. Free on PSN.
With the steam sale starting I want to purchase a bunch of the old pc fps games I missed out on back then.
I own:
doom,2,final doom,3,2016
quake 3,4
unreal tournaments
painkiller black
serious sam 1-3
duke nukem 3d
redneck rampage
the two newer shadow warrior games
the recent wolfenstein games
edit: half life 1 and 2
What other good games that I have missed out on would you guys recommend?
Games I want to pick up that I'm interested in are:
heretic/hexen series
one unit whole blood
quake 1 and 2
I'm looking for games that just have that older fps feel to them.
Star Wars Dark Forces has an original Doom/Wolfenstein feel to it.
"No one Lives Forever" and "SiN" are good and fairly unique story-based FPSes.
If you can your hands on Blood... blows the rest away imo. Developed on the later side of the 90s, towards the end of dos gaming. It’s dark, gory, and just overall creepy af. I hope it gets a remaster or rerelease. Enjoy!
Rise of the Triad?
I came here only to mention this game. I feel like it was the first game to have multiplayer taunts in it, and some of them, I remember at the time, being scary af, when your friends would sneak up on you and all you'd hear is "Behind ya!" I loved Rise of the Triad, I wonder how hard it would be to get my hands on it again.
Check out Dusk, it's a recently released indie shooter that's an homage to classic shootera like doom and quake.
added it to my wishlist and will pick it up when its on a sale. thanks for the suggestion.
Doom games are too gory for me to sink hundreds of hours in but I love the BOOM BOOM RUN BOOM BASH BASH BOOM style of gameplay in them. Are there other games like this?
roboquest, free on gamepass
ULTRAKILL?
Hotline Miami but it’s top down
Shadow Warrior
i'm a little confused seeing some of the recommendations when the OP stated they couldn't play a gory game like doom lol. Seems like the majority of games of this genre are gory or at least the titles i recognize in responses.
I had an awesome time playing Doom. Never much liked FPS till then. Are there any other shooters out there up to $20 that are fun and not too hard? Already have Battlefield.
Bulletstorm.
When I played it for tge first time it took me right back the old days of Doom and Unreal Tournament. It has some crazy guns and encourages you to go for stylish kills. Its a blast to play.
Was going to say the same thing
Shadow Warrior - the protagonist is the crass counterpart to Doomguy, but gameplaywise they have similar style. No wonder, as I think the original Shadow Warrior was a mod of the original Doom. Or a clone.
Shadow warrior was made by 3D Realms, who made Duke Nukem 3D, after that they made Shadow warrior.
Wolfenstein.
I found Wolfenstein quite hard compared to other shooters...
Wolfenstein 2
Wolfenstein/Wolfenstein Old Blood, Wolfenstein 2, or Bulletstorm remake for PS4
I finished Doom The Dark Ages today and its put me in a mood for good fps games. I’ve played some of the big ones like Bioshock, Fallout, and other Doom games but there’s still a lot I haven’t played. I have a PC, PS5, and Switch so as long as it’s on a modern platform I should be able to play it. If anyone has some good recommendations I’d really appreciate it!
Ultrakill. Its doom eternal with better movement and more satisfying weapon swapping.
LMAO
Prodeus!! Can’t believe it hasn’t been mentioned yet.
COD black ops 6 campaign?
Witchfire
have you tried Starfield? it's not ONLY fps, but the fps is pretty good, fun weapons.
Titanfall 2 is pretty good but I'm talking ones where you take very little cover here

Amid Evil is a sort of spiritual successor to Heretic with modern graphics.
Ion Fury had Build Engine sprite graphics, but they are very nice graphics.
There are a lot of total conversions and source ports using the Doom/GZDoom engine, but those maybe don't fit your definition of modern, even if they were made recently. I would definitely recommend them though.
YO, Ion Fury was cool! I forgot about that game...
Dusk, if you dont mind the oldie graphics.
Rage 2. It's made by ID and has the dash move like in eternal. It's absolutely amazing you should check it out
I heard it's mid
It has really fun combat and some super unique guns but the story and open world is super lackluster
It’s a fun open world game that plays like Eternal. Oh and the guns are amazing.
Dusk is my personal favorite, besides Doom.
To quote Civvie: "Strafe jumping takes you straight to plaid"
Civvie is great, love his channel.
Not the biggest fan of this kind of art style, myself.
i wanna play a more modern game thats in they style of games like duke nukem 3d, doom 1 and 2 and shadow warrior 1997 - does any one have any recommendations
More modern? Dusk, Amid Evil, Ultrakill, Ion Fury, Prodeus, probably Selaco when it's out.
More oldschool you'll probably want to check out Blood, generally considered the holy trinity with Duke3D and Shadow Warrior, as well as Heretic, Quake and Unreal.
Also thousands of fan maps for DOOM/DOOM II which are still being made, some of the modern ones are WILD.
Someone should pin this guy's comment. Its spot on!!!
Yea this is a good point. If you want to play boomershooters, your best bet is to check out wads on Doomworld
https://www.doomworld.com/25years/top-100-memorable-maps/
Doom 2 is mechanical boomershooter perfection IMO, and at this point, there's infinite gorgeous and challenging wads that are much better than the base game.
Ultra kill has some doom like elements like quick swapping but it’s definitely way faster and more hectic
It’s closer to quake
Its more closer to quake or modern doom than classic doom.
You can try out Prodeus (Early acess) and Dusk.
Blood
Heretic
Star Wars: Dark Forces
Dusk, Blood, Amid Evil
What do y’all play after Doom? The rampage killing just ain’t the same in any other game. The movement, swapping weapons and learning the environment type shi. What do you recommend?
Ultrakill is peak for the Eternal vibes.
Bullets per Minute also rules. A roguelite fps with pixel graphics, monochrome color palette and vague nods to norse mythology that gives Doom 2016 super hard. Also you can only shoot or dash on beat with the metal soundtrack.
Continuing to work on my backlog myself. Dynasty Warriors Origins is next in queue for me. But for you, I recommend Turbo Overkill, Sprawl, Bulletstorm, and Trepang2 as some of the most mechanically unique FPS’s I’ve played
Oh man I loved Bulletstorm. You’re in for a treat! Turbo overkill is another really good one.
Trepang2 I wanted to try, I think that’s the one that’s like the old FEAR games.
I played them. Those weren’t in my queue, they are just suggestions to OP. Trepang2 is really good I would say it’s a bit like if Bulletstorm, Crysis, and Fear had a baby
You have to checkout ultrakill as well, one of the best games I’ve ever played, super tight controls, blazing fast, really high skill ceiling with most of the weapons, great music, fantastic stages, amazing secret levels
I fucking wish, dude. Don’t have PC. Hope it finds its way to console. Or I get a PC eventually
I'm planning to try out Wolfenstein, never really played it before but seems nice on videos
Back to defending Democracy in Helldivers 2
Mechabellum for the relaxing, strategy itch
I played more sh2 remake after 2 playthroughs of dark ages
Medal of Honor on PS1 was rad
Wolfenstein?
Wolfenstein.
There literally can't be a better answer
DUSK
Outlaws
Blood
Darkwatch? You are a Cowboy Vampire shooting monsters and ghouls while randomly transforming throughout the game. The game is a few years old but it reminded me a lot of doom.
Never really played any of the Doom games (apart from the classic ones), I downloaded this one from Game Pass and so far is one of the best FPS that I’ve played in a while. What other modern Doom games do you recommend?
2016, or just DOOM as it was named; it's got a similar pace and feeling.
Eternal is like they threw Quake 3 into the mix. great game, just a lot faster paced and more like the arcade mode in 2016.
imo, just play them all.
Doom 3 is great too, and the older ones 1 2 and 64, you can finish in a day or two each.
Definitely Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal. Eternal requires a whole different skill set to beat and it can be very high octane/stressful. Give 2016 a try and if you like it go to Eternal. I love Eternal and played it on all platforms over the past few years.
Thats actualy the right order, story wise.
For sure! Will do that.
Of course there's only 2016 and Eternal to recommend and they're both great. Playing this last night it really struck me how much more TDA feels like the older Dooms than the other two new Dooms do. Strafing around projectiles is a big part of this game and less so in the others. Eternal is kind of demanding in terms of execution and is pretty hard but unique.
I love DTDA so far. I can dial down the difficulty enough to where it's still challenging but I can progress through the game. Eternal, even on the easiest level, was just too hard for me and I gave up after not very long since I couldn't get past the bigger enemies.
But TDA is more fun than a barrel full of monkeys so far. I've gotten thru first 6 chapters and had a ton of fun along the way.
DOOM (2016) and DOOM: Eternal are the releases before this one. Play them because they are just as good, if not better than Dark Ages. 2016 is my personal favorite out of the 3.
Thank you, will definitely try them
