What Redditors are Saying

Best FPS Games Like Doom

TL;DR

  • Ultrakill: Fast-paced, gory gameplay with satisfying weapon mechanics [1:4], [3:3], [5:2].
  • Prodeus: Offers great music and weapons, reminiscent of classic shooters [1:2], [5:3].
  • Shadow Warrior: Similar style to Doom, with a crass protagonist [4:3].

Modern Metal Shooters

For those looking for modern games that capture the metal-infused, demon-slaying essence of Doom, titles like Warhammer 40K Boltgun and Space Marine 2 were recommended [1:1], [1:3]. These games offer intense action and heavy weaponry, perfect for players who enjoy the adrenaline rush of Doom.

Classic FPS Homages

If you're interested in games that pay homage to the classic FPS style of Doom, Dusk is a recently released indie shooter that captures the essence of older games like Doom and Quake [2:1]. Star Wars Dark Forces also offers a similar feel to early Doom and Wolfenstein games [2:2].

Stylish Combat and Unique Mechanics

Games like Bulletstorm encourage stylish kills with crazy guns and gameplay reminiscent of Doom and Unreal Tournament [4:2]. Witchfire, although not as frequently mentioned, could offer a unique twist on the FPS genre with its magical elements [5:5].

Single Player Experiences

For single-player FPS experiences, COD Black Ops 6 campaign and Starfield provide engaging narratives alongside their shooting mechanics [5:4], [5:1]. While Starfield isn't solely an FPS, its combat mechanics are praised for being fun and diverse.

These recommendations span a variety of styles and eras, ensuring that fans of Doom can find something new yet familiar to dive into. Whether you prefer the classic feel or modern twists, there's a game out there that will satisfy your craving for fast-paced, visceral action.

What are some good 90s/00s fps games if I like Doom?

Posted by genericname491 · in r/gaming · 6 years ago

With the steam sale starting I want to purchase a bunch of the old pc fps games I missed out on back then.

I own:

doom,2,final doom,3,2016

quake 3,4

unreal tournaments

painkiller black

serious sam 1-3

duke nukem 3d

redneck rampage

the two newer shadow warrior games

the recent wolfenstein games

edit: half life 1 and 2

What other good games that I have missed out on would you guys recommend?

Games I want to pick up that I'm interested in are:

heretic/hexen series

one unit whole blood

quake 1 and 2

I'm looking for games that just have that older fps feel to them.

If you can your hands on Blood... blows the rest away imo. Developed on the later side of the 90s, towards the end of dos gaming. It’s dark, gory, and just overall creepy af. I hope it gets a remaster or rerelease. Enjoy!

Rise of the Triad?

2 upvotes on reddit
RootBeerTuna · 6 years ago

I came here only to mention this game. I feel like it was the first game to have multiplayer taunts in it, and some of them, I remember at the time, being scary af, when your friends would sneak up on you and all you'd hear is "Behind ya!" I loved Rise of the Triad, I wonder how hard it would be to get my hands on it again.

Any good Single Player FPS game recommendations?

Posted by ironchief709 · in r/ShouldIbuythisgame · 4 months ago

I finished Doom The Dark Ages today and its put me in a mood for good fps games. I’ve played some of the big ones like Bioshock, Fallout, and other Doom games but there’s still a lot I haven’t played. I have a PC, PS5, and Switch so as long as it’s on a modern platform I should be able to play it. If anyone has some good recommendations I’d really appreciate it!

Amid Evil is a sort of spiritual successor to Heretic with modern graphics.

Ion Fury had Build Engine sprite graphics, but they are very nice graphics.

There are a lot of total conversions and source ports using the Doom/GZDoom engine, but those maybe don't fit your definition of modern, even if they were made recently. I would definitely recommend them though.

More modern? Dusk, Amid Evil, Ultrakill, Ion Fury, Prodeus, probably Selaco when it's out.

More oldschool you'll probably want to check out Blood, generally considered the holy trinity with Duke3D and Shadow Warrior, as well as Heretic, Quake and Unreal.

Also thousands of fan maps for DOOM/DOOM II which are still being made, some of the modern ones are WILD.

Doom 2 is mechanical boomershooter perfection IMO, and at this point, there's infinite gorgeous and challenging wads that are much better than the base game.

Ultrakill is peak for the Eternal vibes.

Bullets per Minute also rules. A roguelite fps with pixel graphics, monochrome color palette and vague nods to norse mythology that gives Doom 2016 super hard. Also you can only shoot or dash on beat with the metal soundtrack.

Continuing to work on my backlog myself. Dynasty Warriors Origins is next in queue for me. But for you, I recommend Turbo Overkill, Sprawl, Bulletstorm, and Trepang2 as some of the most mechanically unique FPS’s I’ve played

Oh man I loved Bulletstorm. You’re in for a treat! Turbo overkill is another really good one.

Trepang2 I wanted to try, I think that’s the one that’s like the old FEAR games.

2016, or just DOOM as it was named; it's got a similar pace and feeling.

Eternal is like they threw Quake 3 into the mix. great game, just a lot faster paced and more like the arcade mode in 2016.

imo, just play them all.

Doom 3 is great too, and the older ones 1 2 and 64, you can finish in a day or two each.

Definitely Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal. Eternal requires a whole different skill set to beat and it can be very high octane/stressful. Give 2016 a try and if you like it go to Eternal. I love Eternal and played it on all platforms over the past few years.

Of course there's only 2016 and Eternal to recommend and they're both great. Playing this last night it really struck me how much more TDA feels like the older Dooms than the other two new Dooms do. Strafing around projectiles is a big part of this game and less so in the others. Eternal is kind of demanding in terms of execution and is pretty hard but unique.

1 upvotes on reddit
ElfegoBaca · 4 months ago

I love DTDA so far. I can dial down the difficulty enough to where it's still challenging but I can progress through the game. Eternal, even on the easiest level, was just too hard for me and I gave up after not very long since I couldn't get past the bigger enemies.

But TDA is more fun than a barrel full of monkeys so far. I've gotten thru first 6 chapters and had a ton of fun along the way.

DOOM (2016) and DOOM: Eternal are the releases before this one. Play them because they are just as good, if not better than Dark Ages. 2016 is my personal favorite out of the 3.

best fps games like doom

Key Considerations for FPS Games Like Doom:

  1. Fast-Paced Gameplay: Look for games that emphasize quick movement, reflexes, and intense action, similar to Doom's frenetic pace.

  2. Combat Mechanics: Games should feature a variety of weapons and combat styles, allowing for creative approaches to enemy encounters.

  3. Level Design: Levels should be designed for exploration and verticality, often with secrets and shortcuts that encourage replayability.

  4. Visual Style: A strong aesthetic, whether it's gritty, retro, or stylized, can enhance the overall experience and immersion.

  5. Single-Player Focus: Many players enjoy the single-player campaigns of Doom, so look for games that prioritize engaging storylines and character development.

Recommendations:

  1. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

    • Why: Offers a compelling narrative, fast-paced shooting mechanics, and a variety of weapons. The game maintains the spirit of classic FPS games while providing modern graphics and storytelling.
  2. Doom Eternal

    • Why: If you enjoyed Doom (2016), the sequel enhances everything with even faster gameplay, new mechanics, and a deeper lore. It's a direct continuation and expands on the original's formula.
  3. Titanfall 2

    • Why: Known for its fluid movement mechanics and engaging single-player campaign, it combines fast-paced gunplay with unique Titan gameplay, offering a different twist on the FPS genre.
  4. Serious Sam 4

    • Why: Emphasizes chaotic battles against hordes of enemies, reminiscent of Doom's combat style. It features a retro aesthetic and over-the-top action.
  5. Shadow Warrior 2

    • Why: Blends fast-paced shooting with melee combat, offering a unique mix of humor and action. The game features a variety of weapons and a colorful art style.

These games should satisfy your craving for high-octane FPS action similar to Doom!
