TL;DR The Doom series features a simple yet evolving storyline centered around the protagonist, known as "Doom Guy" or "Doom Slayer," battling demons from Hell. The lore has expanded over time, especially in the newer games, but the core premise remains: fight and defeat demonic forces.
Classic Doom Series
The original Doom (1993) and its sequel, Doom II: Hell on Earth, feature a nameless marine who becomes the Doom Guy. He was stationed on Mars after assaulting a superior officer and ends up fighting demons unleashed by experiments conducted by the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC) [1]. The story is straightforward—demons are bad, and you kill them
[1:2]
[1:3]. While the manual for Doom II suggests a different marine, later games have unified the narrative to feature the same protagonist
[3:2].
Modern Doom Games
Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal expand significantly on the lore. In these games, the Doom Slayer is revealed to be part of an ancient order known as the Night Sentinels, who fought against the forces of Hell. The UAC, seeking to harness energy from Hell, inadvertently unleashes the demons once more [2:3]
[4:3]. The Slayer's connection to BJ Blazkowicz from the Wolfenstein series is also hinted at, suggesting a lineage of demon fighters
[2:3].
Argent Energy and Lore Expansion
Argent Energy plays a significant role in the modern lore. It's created by refining Hell energy with Wraith energy, which the UAC seeks to exploit [4:3]. The newer games delve deeper into the history of the Doom Slayer and the civilizations that battled Hell, introducing complex relationships between the Sentinels and the Makyrs, a god-like race
[5:3]. These expansions have made the storyline more intricate, sometimes leading to confusion among players
[5:5].
Reception and Interpretation
While some players appreciate the expanded lore, others find it convoluted and prefer focusing on gameplay [1:9]
[5:1]. The narrative is often seen as secondary to the action, with many fans enjoying the over-the-top nature of the series
[1:1]
[5:4]. Despite this, the modern games have incorporated detailed codices and cutscenes to provide context for those interested in the backstory
[2:6].
Overall, the Doom storyline has evolved from a simple demon-slaying adventure to a rich tapestry of lore involving ancient orders, interdimensional battles, and cosmic energies. However, at its heart, Doom remains a game about defeating evil and saving humanity from demonic forces.
I'm about to start from Doom 2016, but I've watched multiple videos explaining the lore about the prevous games. But I still feel like I'm missing out on some important details, so I'm gonna try my best to explain those games according to what I know. SO PLEASE LMK IF THERE'S ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW.
Doom (1993):
Protagonist is a nameless marine, who was stationed to Mars cuz he disobeyed and assaulted his superior officer who ordered him to fire an unarmed civilians. Now he works as a security guard for UAC (Union Aerospace Corporation), a research facility who does experiments on interdimensional travel.
Smth goes wrong and portals to Hell are accidently opened, and demons are unleashed onto Mars and it's two moons, Phobos and Deimos.
Doomguy and his team go to investigate but his team gets killed pretty soon, only he remains. So he kicks ass there, gets to the end, but ends up in Deimos, only to find it floating above Hell itself. So he goes down there and kicks their asses too.
Then he finds a portal that leads to Earth, so he enters...
Doom II:
When he comes to Earth, he sees his family dead along with his pet bunny DAISY.
Oh, and also Earth has been overthrown by demons cuz they invaded it while he was fighting demons in Hell.
The survivors of the invasion try to escape via a spacecraft. To do that, they go to the spaceport, but it is blocked by the demons. Doomguy clears out the demons and they successfully escape.
Then he receives a message from the survivors, revealing the demonic base is in his hometown. He goes to his hometown, finds the portal to Hell, and enters it. Then he fights through Hell and defeats the Icon of Sin, a gigantic demon, closing the portal to Earth.
Doom 64:
Years pass, and it was found that a demon survived in Hell and is resurrecting the other demons. Time passes and the mother demon creates a big demon army.
The military sends Doomguy back, he kills them all and seals the portal from the inside, locking himself in Hell to kill any remaining demons that may be alive.
So this is all i know for now, I just wanna make sure if it's enough info for me to start Doom 2016.
Thanks in advance.
people like the lore of the new games and that’s great. but classic doom story doesn’t matter at all. kill demons kill demons kill demons
Thanks, imma do that. About to start 2016
There are demons. Kill em.
I know iD has spent a bunch of time fleshing out lore because that’s what every game apparently needs these days. But this is one of those games where you don’t have to over complicate it. The vast majority of players have never watched a video and probably skip most cutscenes.
Demons bad. You kill them. Fin.
Pretty much. Stuff happens between 64 and 2016, but that is all lore we learn from 2016, Eternal, and The Dark Ages. I recommend you don't look them up ahead of time and play the games, and read the in-game codices.
Thanks Yeah, I'm avoiding literally everything about doom 2016, eternal and dark ages rn
Doom lore is honestly mad goofy. I love doom but the story is lowkey whack asf. I don’t even take it seriously anymore
Yeah, but kinda cool the way it evolved to become our creation story
I honestly find it to be hilarious at this point. Like what more can they shove in to make it increasingly over the top.
The story is pretty much a side note.
rip and tear until it is done
How did the demons come from hell? Why? Who the hell is doom guy and why is he such a beast?
Guess you could look up wikis, videos and the games' manuals to get the "lore" but there's this blog post someone made that explains most of it.
http://thathomestar.tumblr.com/post/141293323952/believe-it-or-not-doom-actually-has-a-story
I'm having fun reading that, but is there any truth to it? Like is it linked to doom at all? How do we know that it's not just made up by that person?
That blog is someone i know is into Doom, that also made some guides on getting into the series and reblogs stuff like fanart and mods etc.
I'm pretty sure he based that on Intermission/endgame screens and what's implied on game manuals and related.
Play the game read the lore hidden in the codexes you pick up....that's just condensed codexes.
Company called UAC created a portal to hell to harness the raw “Hell” energy. The Slayer is/was a security guy (from the original it’s implied it was his first day in the job, we’re ignoring Doom 3 btw). And apparently his ancestor is BJ Blazkowicz from the Wolfenstein series. So that’s partly why, and in the lore of Doom 2016 it seems like he may be some sort of descendant of some crazy alien race who looked like humans that battled the dimension of Hell
Shit that's confusing
Earth's sucking up natural resources, Earth's gonna die uac finds reading of limitless energy in an wormhole on Mars....they come to Mars rip open a tiny wormhole siphon out some energy....cue Samuel Hayden standing their in his robo-nakedness saying "we harvested argent energy! Bitter old ldu grumbles bout a kidney stone shut the hell up olivia I'm basking! Demon offers Olivia power she agrees Hayden sends scientists into wormhole...none come back Hayden and a group of the red suited marines go in find an area the demons are guarding tooth and nail....they reck house drag by back big stone box
.Olivia permenantly opens wormhole Hayden says shit and runs thru the portal and hides in his office. Everydbody dies in initial invasion Seeing as doomslayer is still awake in his tomb he breaks out sees demons gets pissed and wrecks house. Play the game
This might come of as a weird question because it's generally accepted that Doom + Doom II: Hell on Earth feature the same protagonist (Doom Guy).
But I just re-read the official backstory in the Doom II manual which — in a way — makes it sound as if you're a space marine, just like the protagonist of the first game, but you were at a different part during the invasion.
While we know that Doom Guy in the first game fought on Deimos and Phobos and ultimately through Hell, the instruction manual to Doom II has a different backstory for its protagonist:
>Back at last. After days of hard fighting in space, you’ve returned home on well-earned leave. You’re one of Earth’s crack soldiers, hard-bitten, tough, and heavily-armed. When the alien invasion struck Mars, you were the first on the scene. By killing, killing, and killing, you won. You stopped the invasion, saved Mars base, and became a war hero. What they don’t talk about so much is that you were the only survivor. But that’s all behind you now. You’ve quit the military, and are heading home. Your drop pod lands with a crunch. You open ‘er up, and look out.
First of all, this marine was fighting on Mars, not its moons, and didn't travel to Hell. He helped defend a base on Mars and apparently procedures are still in place that he was recognized in some form as a war hero, before officially quitting the military and heading back home in a drop pod.
This is quite different from how the original Doom ended in which Doom Guy defeated the Spider Mastermind and discovered a "hidden doorway" (I suppose a transporter/teleporter) which takes him back to Earth:
>The loathsome spiderdemon that masterminded the invasion of the moon bases and caused so much death has had its ass kicked for all time. A hidden doorway opens and you enter. You've proven too tough for Hell to contain, and now Hell at last plays fair — for you emerge from the door to see the green fields of Earth! You wonder what's been happening on Earth while you were battling evil unleashed. It's good that no hell-spawn could have come through that door with you...
This, to me, makes it sound as if "Doom Guy" returned to Earth via portal or other technology and it's implied that some demon forces used that same door to make their way to Earth, while "Doom II Guy" was still fighting on Mars, but managed to clean up the remaining monsters, before returning to Earth as well, in a spacecraft.
While "Doom II Guy" was traveling through space (which would've taken him a good few months from Mars to Earth), the invasion "Doom Guy" brought with him was spreading across the globe, so when "Doom II Guy" finally arrives at the starport (beginning of Doom II), Earth is already infested and we then follow "Doom II Guy", not the original "Doom Guy", even though he's also back on Earth.
What do you think? Was the original idea to have a different marine be the protagonist in each game? I mean, it would fit with Doom 3's marine being yet another character (as well as the add-on mission's characters also being different marines each time). It would also explain why "Doom II Guy" looks so different in artworks compared to "Doom Guy".
Sure, they didn't put that much effort into storytelling and "lore" back when the first two games released, but this is a pretty big difference between how the first game ended and how the second game's protagonist's backstory is presented. I mean, they surely didn't forget we were fighting on Phobos and Deimos but not Mars, right? It was a big part of the game after all.
Originally, they were meant to be separate marines. However, the new games have totally rejected the “lore” in the DOOM II manual, despite preserving the DOOM and DOOM 64 manuals’ canonicity
The key element people need to remember is that Doom barely took story seriously, so story flaws are expected.
I'm of the opinion that Doom is more fun if you think of the premise as something that can be done in different ways instead of taking a lore/universe rules too seriously.
True. But with Doom 3 being another marine yet again it made me wonder if it was meant to be the idea all along, with each entry telling the story from another main character's perspective, starting with Doom II already.
I guess it is part of the fact that Doomguy was originally a blank slate, so in some way, the protagonist wasn't that big of a deal in Doom.
Because even Quake 2 had different marines for its expansions at the time.
Well the Domm 2016 game and especially doom eternal are way into the lore and go insane with the power level of the doom Slayer.
My take was always that they just said “mars” to refer to the mars moon bases because saying either that or mentioning both Deimos and Phobos was too cumbersome, so it became the “mars” attack. I think lack of mention of daisy lends to your theory but I always thought they just dropped that because it was dumb and un-cool.
Are you correct? Yes. The words in the document seem to indicate yes, but just like another Friday the 13th movie they went ahead and ignored that for sake of making more.
No
So I decided to put my brain to work and accommodate everything in the Doom universe from Doom 1 to Eternal.
Before I start, I really love the lore of Eternal and the way it connected things. I honestly think the moment Doomguy talked was as powerful as hearing Caesar from Planet of the apes. It just makes the guy such a tragic figure, especially considering he goes insane. Anyways, here it is, let me know if I miss something:
First comes the story of a guy (probably a Blazkowicz) who punches his CO for ordering him to fire against civilians and gets sent to Mars as punishment, where he's bored out of his mind, guarding UAC scientist and the like.
One day, Phobos, one of the moons sends a distress signal and they send Doomguy with a team to investigate. He's left outside to guard the entrance, meanwhile everyone else gets butchered inside until the message "send help..." Is sent. At this point Doomguy enters the facility and Doom 1 begins. In this mission, Doomguy manages to kill a Tyrant Cyberdemon at the tower of Babel and later kills the Mastermind behind the invation: The Spider mastermind.
Now, here it gets a little confusing, because he doesn't return to Earth directly after this, but goes to the events of Thy flesh consumed, where he kills either another or a resurrected Mastermind. After its death, Doomguy steps on the portal to escape Hell, but a hidden sigil placed there by Baphomet (the Icon of sin) sends Doom guy to deeper places in Hell, seemingly to keep him occupied while the invasion of Earth happens.
Once he manages to get out, Doom 2 starts, where most of Earth population has died, including his pet rabbit Daisy and only Doomguy remains on Earth to close the main portal from Hell whose gatekeeper is the Icon of sin. This marks their first encounter.
The Icon is killed and Doom 2 ends, then comes No rest for the living, then TNT and finally Plutonia.
After that is the start of Doom 64 where at the end, Doomguy decides to stay in Hell to prevent them from ever conquering the mortal world again. It's important to know he has severe PTSD by this point. Supposedly this is where many wads take place, with Doomguy jumping from world to world in an effort to stop Hell, who in turn starts fearing him, it also begins breaking Doomguy to the point of madness until killing demons is all that's left of him.
Now, the Sentinels talk about the creation of their world, not the universe. After a spear penetrates their planet from side to side, a group of unknown entities burst out and create life. By seemingly magic, they cause various beasts and animals to grow to enormous sizes. Keep into account that no one here is demonic by nature, neither the Wraiths nor the Titans of Argent D'nur.
Wraith magic also creates man and they quickly evolve to the point of challenging the Titans to claim the planet for themselves. They create the Argenta society, build castles, sword, spear, etc. and name the first ruler: King Ormero. Their civilizations prospers and generations later they get visied by the Maykrs who are seemingly impressed by the Sentinels and their culture.
Thanks to Maykrs the Argenta makes a huge technological and spiritual leap forward to the point where they create starships and master intergalactic travel thanks to both magic and science which ends up with the Sentinel society looking at them as gods. Due to this and the Maykrs' teachings they set out to numerous other planets and dimensions to conquer and spread the Maykr word including Earth, thus religion as we know it starts.
Centuries pass or even longer when suddenly a stranger appears outside Sentinel Prime's castle gates, this stranger is Doomguy who has been fighting hell for an extremely long time, possibly centuries or even a thousand years. He gets taken to the arenas where he defeats several men while being injured and is allowed to enter the Sentinel frontlines.
As this happens, the Kahn Maykr set others to learn his tongue and it's here where she learns about Hell. Not long after while seeking revenge against Doomguy, Hell invades Argent D'nur which marks their first encounter with demons.
Both Sentinels and Maykrs are on a loss for words as the Hell dimension is an extremely powerful foe that neither of them can contain nor understand save one and that is Doomguy.
The unholy crusades start and numerous wars are waged against Hell where they get the upper hand at each turn until the priests manage to capture a few demons, this is where they learn Hell magic and mix it with Wraith's, this creates Argent energy. Still, Hell is still too powerful for them, but while many are killed, only Doomguy remains. A Maykr (Samur, the Seraphim) sees this and for reasons unknown places Doomguy inside the Divinity machine, essentially making him a god and thus the Doom Slayer is born. He takes out the Titan and Argent starts gaining the upper hand against Hell.
Unknown to them, Kahn Maykr visits the Dark Lord of Hell and makes a deal with him.
Years before the Maykrs met the Sentinels, the Father (seemingly god) goes missing, taken by Samur and due to this the Maykrs cannot reach reincarnation, making them mortal. That is until Argent energy is created. The Kahn notices that with Argent, her life span increases considerably and thus seeks to attain more in order to avoid death.
Hell magic comes from demons themselves, their very being which is fed by Hell itself with mortal souls. Due to this the deal the Kahn made with the Dark lord of Hell was for her to gain unlimited access to Argent energy in exchange of giving Hell numerous planets and realities for them to consume.
A civil war occurs once the Sentinels discover Argent is made from their souls and their society is divided. Those that follow themselves and freedom of Argent and those who follow the Maykr. The betrayal takes place, the Sentinels are killed, the resurrected Icon of sin enter the fight and is defeated again by Doomguy. This is why we find him dormant in D2016 with his being still attached to Valen's son's sould.
After this, only Doomguy (now Doom Slayer) is left as he continues to fight against Hell for eons to no end. Then he gets entombed and the events of DOOM 2016 happen.
Note that Earth and the UAC from D2016 isn't the same as the one from the original games, but another one from an alternate universe and/or timeline, where the one constant is Doomguy.

Now, Hell is stated to be connected or be able to create connections to other dimensions, timelines and realities and it is kept still in a singular dimensional space inverse of Urdak.
Hell is also infinite, so maybe the events of Doom 3 happened in a completely different reality but with the exact same Hell. Remember that there are different breeds of demons, as well as different lords and liutenants such as Betruger/Maledict.

Still, Doomguy seems to have literally ripped himself apart from space and time, thus making him a universal constant in different realities and timelines and he's been all over the place, completely unaffected by neither space nor time, which is why the Icon reality bending effect didn't affect him.
Some things to consider about Hell is that the reason they so badly want to consume the mortal world by a single planet, is because once they succeed, the Hell gateway gets exponentially larger, the holdings against them are broken, allowing Hell to consume that entire universe as they have done many others.
Another thing to notice is that the tower where Doom guy first battled the Tyrant breed (The tower of Babel) is located at the very center of what is now the city of Nekravol, so basically the ancient tower was changed into a soul industrial complex and the city of Nekravol was built around it with the aid of Sentinel slaves and under the rule of both the Dark lord of Hell and the Kahn Maykr.
Ok, I really appreciate it, but I also need to know where Doom: The Dark Ages truly takes place and the story that connects it to the Eternal and D2016, bc so far I heard it's supposed to take place between D2016 and Doom Eternal or before both, so I'm not exactly sure where the new one fits
It's before both, dark ages covers a portion of the batlle for argent dnur
Nice. Very concise and easy to understand. Also, one thing that I remember from the game is that, IIRC, Argent Energy was created when Hell energy was refined using Wraith Energy.
Here trying to mentally prepare for the new Doom game
Same 😂 It may explain it though simce it'll be a prequel, not sure
someone needs to show this to markiplier so he can get a grip on how the story works, instead of thinking there are 2 betrayers for some dumbass reasons
Hang on, what?? What's Mark's take on the story?
he thinks the slayers motivation isn't good because he somehow confused himself into thinking the slayer was the betrayer and was disappointed that he wasn't, even though he literally fucking met the betrayer. he then said the story was too convoluted and detracted from the gameplay. he even complained that sentinel prime was too slow paced even though he stopped and read out every single codex. then he saw more betrayer lore and went 'wait, so there are two betrayers? this makes no sense.' pea sized brain
Glad I'm not the only one obsessing over Doom lore in quarantine, lol. Here's an abridged overview I typed out as I was scanning through codex entries. It's remarkably similar to yours, but a few of the more detailed descriptions of historical events are left out for brevity unless they're hugely relevant to Doomguy's story.
Its distinct style works really well, and to be honest I don't miss glory kills too much.
However, I felt like the middle of the game was really confusing. If it wasn't for the text during the landing screen explaining stuff I would have no idea what was going on. I only felt this way for the middle of the game; I didn't understand why I was in hell for a while, or why we went to cthullu's little cocoon, or what was going on with the command station dragon mission. Feels like maybe the story was restructured.
This might be something I missed but why and how was Doom under the control of the kreed at the start?
There was a line in one cut scene that suggests the Makyr control was because he was too powerful and needed to be kept on a leash (I paraphrase). As for the jump to Hell, I thought I missed a cut scene as it was so sudden.
I think I remember King Novik saying something along these lines; still, it felt somewhat poorly explained. Along with the question: if the Kreed Makyr was a friend or ally? Its obvious to us he wasn't, but he warns King Novik that "we" should leave after Ahzrak gets the heart, so I dont particularly understand the motivation behind killing him from Doom and the sentinels.
If Doom was upset about the leash thing, why not go after the sentinels.
I agree, it's definitely not the clearest. My impression is that, having worked with Hell, the Kreed Makyr's fate was sealed.
Nothing about the lore makes sense anymore. Novik claimed in Eternal that Doom Slayer can’t break the covenant or some other nonsense. Didn’t the Makyrs pretty much violate the covenant already by aligning with Hell? They started a bloody civil war. What covenant is Doom Slayer breaking? Fighting evil demons? The same demons who committed genocide and subjugated your civilization? The Makyrs betrayed you dumbass. then Novik contradicts everything he said before with his stupid monologue at the end.
2016 says all of Argent D’Nur was engulfed by Hell but then in Eternal it wasn’t. In fact, it looks pretty intact and many citizens are still working for the Makyrs.
They let Doom Slayer go to Argent because he’s allowed passage. They know he’s there to kill the Hell Priest and do pretty much nothing to stop him. Like the Makyrs already know what he’s up to and did nothing to stop him from going there and let him in because of this BS rule. It makes no sense. This is flimsy storytelling.
It makes sense, you’re just not paying attention. The Sentinels and the Makyrs have a pact of sorts. Basically the Sentinels treat them as gods, and the Makyrs basically say they’ll go to “heaven” when they die. Pretty cut and dry.
The Kreed Makyr broke this pact, and Novik even says at the end something along the lines of “the Church doesn’t condone the actions of the Kreed Makyr” meaning he acted alone. Once again, pretty cut and dry. The “Makyrs” didn’t align with Hell, Kreed did.
Novik didn’t think all the Makyrs were corrupt, so he still assumed they were good. So Doom Guy, knowing they’re corrupt, going and killing them, would put him even further out of the Sentinel society. Because to the Sentinels, he’s already an outsider, but now he’s going and killing or trying to stop their gods basically. The only one who knows of their corruption, being Doom Guy.
There was also an entire civil war per Eternal lore after people discovered the source of argent energy which makes this even funnier. Maybe they'll handwave it as a solo makyr going rogue (even though they're still a hivemind) for this time period covered in the prequel.
The arachnotron existing in TDA is also weird because I'm pretty sure they only started existing after the timeline events of 2016.
They will probably say something like "the UAC created the arachnotrons based off the ancient hell scriptures" or something.
I'm pretty sure that's also the excuse as to why there's revenants in TDA when they were UAC built with human volunteers in '16/eternal
arachnotrons were in doom 1 and 2 brochacho
I can't speak for the rest, but I think the Argent D'nur in Hell bit is passable to me. Those codex entries are written by the UAC that hasn't even managed to recover people sent to Hell. I'm guessing the saw references to Argent Dnur around the wraiths and assumed it was the whole world.
At this point I just concede the story in the modern Doom games was made for the sole purpose of aura farming for the Doom Slayer
I watched all the cutscenes and was still confused why I would just show up in another place (Hell especially).
Hugo Martin, in the dev livestream, said they'd patch in a better way to detail players on what is happening in between missions in terms of the narrative.
I beat the game and still don't understand, how doom guy got on the ship? In 2016 Hayden teleported him somewhere. Now Hayden half dead, doom guy brings him to the ship and Hayden be like: "oh, I think we friends now, let's forget that I betrayed you"
They were planning a comic to show the events between the 2 games but it never happened.
Yeah, the transition doesn't make much sense to me either. I think there are some YouTube videos about the timeline but I don't think they explain that.
These are details that would have been nice to have explained, but they aren’t really necessary for the game’s story.
We can suppose that the slayer got the Fortress of Doom after being stuck in hell for a while with the backup copy of Vega. I’d guess that Vega assisted the slayer with “rebuilding” and enhancing Vega, granting him portal tech. This allowed the pair to jump to the sentinel world where the slayer recovered the Fortress. That’s just my personal theory.
As for Hayden, yes he betrayed the slayer at the end of Doom 2016. However, if you couldn’t tell based on the state of Earth in Eternal…shit’s really fucked up. The slayer doesn’t need to waste precious time arguing with anyone, and he needs Hayden’s help to save Earth. That’s a slightly bigger deal than whatever beef he had with Hayden at the time, wouldn’t you agree?
[removed]
I can't speak as to the huge comment because I didn't read that part, but I would agree with the basic statement that Doomguy is a humanist and wouldn't kill a civilian unless necessary. This is actually why he punches his CO to begin with.
He only targets Olivia because she is aligned with Hell and has murdered a metric fuckton of innocent people.
Exactly, he won't kill innocent people, but he has no issue killing humans if they're a threat
The pinnacle of “fuck around and find out” I guess is how I think of the slayer.
For someone disabled enough to require an exoskeleton just to move around she sure had an easy time getting into the argent tower considering doomguy had to parkour his way across, so she either just got lucky enough that the bridge was blown out after she'd crossed it or had a revenant jetpack assist her across the whole chasm
Doomguy was parkouring and slaying like a madman while Olivia just took the elevator.
he was for sure ragebaiting you man 😭
i gotta say though, you put work into that comment.
I hear doom, I go into dedication mode while the doom music plays lol
"You can't stop me cause i don't know how to read" moment.
My favourite answer I get when someone who refuses to read coz they can't argue back is "too long didn't read" it's an indication that they did infact read it, but can't think of a way to counter so imma insult you instead kind of thing. Or when they go from arguing to insulting because you destroyed their argument lol
Brother did you really type out a whole novel to someone in a reddit comment? Then you made a post complaining about him.
I'm sorry but it's time to go touch some grass.. people are idiots and it's a waste of time doing all that
Hi, I am new to DOOM and I would really appreciate it if someone could explain to me the lore from the original Doom to the ancient gods part 2. Really would appreciate if you could do a short summary.
The "lore" of the classic games exists in both intermission text screens in the games and the instruction booklets with info on them.
2016/Eternal has codex entries and a lot of more detail and story, even if they're written by different teams.
Hopefully this helps:

There's also the wiki section on this subreddit.
You are the same guy in DOOM, DOOM 2 Hell on Earth, DOOM 64, DOOM 2016, and DOOM: ETERNAL.
DOOM: You assaulted your superior officer for ordering you to fire on civilians. You are demoted and transfered to a security detail on a Union Aerospace Corporation. They have been experimenting with portal tech, and accidentally open a portal to Hell itself. The base is flooded with demons, you are the last marine standing. A one man army.
Hell on Earth is a direct sequel, the Hell invasion has reached your hometown, your family and pet rabbit have been murdered. Kill them all (again).
DOOM 64 a mysterious demon has resurrected many of the foes you vanquished in the original game, you must once again plunge the dark army and destroy the Mother Demon! You vow to seal the gate and stay in hell... Forever.
(Sometime between 64 and 2016 the marine is somehow teleported to another planet/realm, where he quickly rises through the ranks of the sentinel army after vanquishing a Hell Titan and saving Argent D'Nur and becomes the Slayer of Doom after being subjected to the divinity machine. Some sentinel priests have been corrupted by the Khan Maykr, ruler of Urdak, DOOM's version of heaven. The priests trap the slayer in a coffin, where he is trapped for untold years. (The Khan ordered him to be sealed away, as the divinity machine not only gave the Slayer great power, but also revealed to her that was the prophesized destroyer of the Maykr realm.)
DOOM 2016 starts with the slayer awakening in an alternate dimension, where the UAC has been exploiting Hell energy... Rip and Tear until it is done. The mysterious Samuel Hayden guides you along your journey, ultimately betraying you as you once again get locked away for untold time.
That where DOOM: Eternal starts. I strongly urge reading the lore entries in-game and trying to follow the story as presented by cutscenes.
damn seems like i need to give doom a try now

I heard people talking about this being the end of the DOOM saga. Is this true?
Thanks everyone! I can't wait for the second part of the Ancient Gods to come out tommorow!
Doom 1. After beating the shit out of his commanding officer for ordering him to fire on civilians doomguy is exiled to Mars to serve as security for the UAC, however the UAC,s experiments with portals attract the attention of the demons, who invade the facility. doomguy kills the ones who invaded Mars and then goes into hell and eventually kills the spider mastermind and escapes through a portal back to earth only to discover that the demons have invaded and killed his pet rabbit, daisy.
Doom 2. Much the same plot really, doomguy fights his way through the demons on earth and then in hell as well, ending his rampage with the defeat of the icon of sin and escapes back to earth
Doom 64. Again pretty similar, demons show up then get slaughtered by the slayer, the key difference being that at the end of the game he chooses to remain in hell to fight the demons.
Eventually after fighting the demons for a long time the slayer stumbles through a portal, severely injured into the world of the night sentinels. He trains with them for a while and when the demons invade their world the slayer proves invaluable in holding back the demonic horde. His battle prowess means he is quickly raised through the hierarchy of the night sentinels, becoming second only to the king himself. After the betrayal by the maykrs the slayer is left alone in hell once more and despite their best efforts the demons can do nothing to stop the slayers carnage, all of hell begins to retreat from his fury.
That is until, using the hell priests as bait they lure the slayer deep underground where they drop an entire fucking temple on his head. This incapacatates the slayer and the demons imprison him within the cursed sarcophagus until an expedition led by Samuel Hayden retrieves it and frees him, leading to the events of 2016 and eternal. (We have absolutely no idea what happened between the events of 2016 and eternal btw)
This is MASSIVELY oversimplified and I almost definitely got things wrong but oh well:)
It's pretty clear in the Doom series that the only way to achieve immortality is from the suffering and torment (hell essence) of mortal beings which is why Davoth was refused it for his creations and then sealed away, preventing him from knowing the secret.
The Father and Davoth are immortal on the other hand.. so what if there is a place of torment and great suffering just like hell that we don't get to see or know as the player?
Davoth being created from that power source since the father was "lonley" but everything else after is at the mercy of death, since it's a "limited" supply?
I think that's why we see Doomguy destroying fathers orb too. I don't no if this was obvious or not but what do you think?
I just finished playing and been deep in thought over the lore.
Also both orbs are identical, one being white and the other black but also we see the Maykr using white/light magic despite feeding on suffering and torment so this doesn't really change much.
I mean like the story about the betrayer. The whole story about the slayer, ardent d nur, icon of sin and everything. I know about this things but i just cant peace it together.
Doomguy is probably the former leader of the Night Sentinels who are a humanoid race of peoples who really hate hell. Doomguys son got super sick and a demon who has a name that I can't remember went "Ayo you want your kid? Lead me to the Wraiths (dudes who made the argent well) and I can do that" obviously because demon his son got turned into the essence of evil.
So Doomguy got real mad and started punching lots of shit. Then other person who official name is escaping me (hooded dude surrounded in god rays in that one ancient photo of Doomguy punching demons) was like "Yo you really hate demons, I think your hatred owns, want some sick as fuck armour my dude" and Doomguy said "Yes". So he got his armour and beat the shit out of everything. The big skull you walk into in the start of Titans Realm? Yeah Doomguy killed that nerd.
Then the Summoners were like "Okay this dude needs to go away, but we can't kill him. Let's drop a whole fucking temple on him." So they did that and it worked, put him in that sarcophagus you get out of at the start, and guarded it fiercely. Samual Hayden took it eventually, Olivia Pierce at this point was already infected by the demon she makes a deal with (some think it's the original betrayer, some think it's just history repeating itself to tell a story) and wants him to stay in because she knows if he gets out her deal is over. Hayden wants a back up plan in case Olivia goes crazy (she did) so he wants Doomguy to get out. He gets out and then the events of the story take place. The end.
TL;DR Doomguy is mad because he was betrayed, and now wants to punch everything.
It is NOT confirmed that the Icon of Sin, the son of the Betrayer, is the son of Doomguy.
In fact, the demons of Hell saw the Betrayer's acts as treachery, and the Icon of Sin - his son, now turned demon - killed him.
Source:
>When the Wraiths fell, Argent D'nur was defenseless and soon swiftly conquered by Hell, which accelerated the integration of the dimension into Hell's. As a reward, the Betrayer was given back his son, but he turned into Demon form; The Icon of Sin. His revenge was swift and merciless, repaying the Betrayer's treachery with suffering.

Doomslayer's the same from doom, doom 2 and doom 64 tho...
That’s not confirmed yet. He could have met the Night Sentinels after he vowed to stay in Hell in Doom 64.
