TL;DR
Freestyle Skateboard Brands
When it comes to freestyle skateboards, several brands stand out. Waltz, Mode, and Decomposed are frequently recommended for their quality and dedication to freestyle skating [1:1]
[2:1]. Moonshine is another brand mentioned as a reliable option in the U.S.
[1:1]. These brands offer boards specifically designed for freestyle tricks, which can be crucial for performance and durability.
Features of Freestyle Boards
Freestyle skateboards have specific features that differentiate them from standard street boards. Offset wheels are particularly important because they help cover the axles, which is beneficial for performing tricks [1:1]
[2:1]. Skid plates are also recommended as they protect the board and extend its lifespan
[1:1]
[2:1]. While you can use a regular skateboard for freestyle by adding these components, a dedicated freestyle board will generally perform better and last longer
[2:3]
[2:5].
Budget-Friendly Options
For those on a budget, it's possible to start with a non-freestyle board and modify it for freestyle use. Adding freestyle-specific wheels and skid plates to a smaller popsicle deck, such as a 7.0" or 7.5", can be an economical way to get started [2:2]
[2:4]. Decomposed Skateboards offers affordable completes, with some models priced around $99, making them a good option for beginners or those looking to save money
[2:6].
General Skateboard Recommendations
Beyond freestyle, general skateboard recommendations include choosing reputable brands for decks, trucks, and wheels. Popular choices for trucks include Thunder and Independent, while Ricta and Spitfire are favored for wheels [3:10]
[3:4]. It's often suggested to buy individual parts rather than complete setups to tailor the skateboard to personal preferences and needs
[3:9].
Looking into buying a freestyle board! I’ve seen Waltz and Mode boards out there online, was wondering if there were any more?
Also do local skate shops sell freestyle boards? What should I ask? Thanks!
You can use smaller popsicle board, like a 7.5" Mini-Logo or the like for freestyle.
Local skate shops won't sell freestyle boards since there's nearly no demand for them.
Dunno if this helps but i actually watched this vid the other day! Before this i didnt even know they made boards specifically for freestyle ha https://youtu.be/DKohP-MjPVI
Buy stuff from the waltz or mode site directly or visit freestyle sites like Decomposedsk8
To get freestyle stuff you basically have to be a nerd and dig for it. Have fun
I know I'm late on this, but I just found this sub. Mode skateboards, moonshine skateboards, and decomposed in the US, all are great companies run by great people! The most important thing is offset wheels. You can freestyler n a street board, but offset wheels are going to help a ton. Skid plates help your board last way longer as well. Hope I'm too late and you've dived into the world of freestyle, but leaving this here for future generations
Howdy. I’m trying to get into freestyle skating. Any recommendations on brands? I knows of Waltz but I’m really not trying to spend $170+ on a full set.
Skate1 has 7.0 completes for $65. They’re not specifically made for freestyle but they’re the right size & have minilogo trucks which Andy Anderson rides. I originally got one for my son but started using it myself once he lost interest
I used to freestyle with non-freestlye boards as a teen and they just got shredded. Idk what Waltz is but if theyre designed for freestyle and have longevity you'll save yourself money not having to replace the deck every 2 months anyway lmao
It depends I guess, I’ve been using non freestyle board for freestyle too and just added freestyle wheels and skid plates. It has been pretty good and lasted me. Also waltz is a freestyle specific brand. Their wheels I use actually.
I was doing a lot of Casper’s and truck stands on mine so that put a lot of mileage lmao
Check out this old vid from waltz Hack your skateboard for freestyle and just get a regular deck for cheaper. Maybe get a smaller size like 7.00 - 7.50 if you want like the other dude said. The biggest differences with freestyle decks are the size and shape.
What’s your budget? Decomposed Skateboards have some affordable completes that might be perfect for you.
I’m a freestyler. The most important thing is wheels. Get some that are offset so they will cover your axles. Second is skid plates. If you already have a street deck, those will be enough to start. If you don’t have a board at all, Waltz is a great brand as well as Mode, Decomposed, and Moonshine.
What board brands are considered some of the best or worth the money paid for them if you're buying a complete set-up?
Or are there any notable brands to look out for as far as accessories go like wheels, trucks, decks, etc.?
At this point I know to avoid Walmart boards or Retrospec, but if you could ride a dream board what brand would you choose?
It's all personal preference. No one buys completes except for brand new skaters. Generally, its Ace or Indy, Bones or Spitfire and whatever brand decks you like. The advanced level here is not by brand but by shape/woodshop.
Ricta Clouds wheels are by far the best wheels (in my opinion) - Thunder trucks and actually CCS trucks are surprisingly good too
I agree, refuse to skate any other wheels when I am skating as a means of transportation. The 78a wheels are unbelievable on crusty terrain.
Clouds are great for cruising or filming but for regular skating they’re kinda ass lol. Can’t go wrong with F4 Spits
I might age myself here but -
I always liked Element or Girl. Featherlights were fun. Most decks will generally feel the same, though. Get something that's wide enough for your feet, but thin enough that you can still flip. I'm a size 10 and usually stuck with 7.75" decks. Ask the guy behind the counter to let you see the board and stand on it.
Trucks - Tensor, super light lows. Bearings - Swiss, but probably not a big issue here. If you pay more for really nice bearings, you might not like them/be ready for them yet. Wheels - Ricta
I was gonna mention tensor trucks and hardware if you want lighter gear!
Yall newbies focus waaaay too much on these things.
If you didn't buy it from walmart and it's 7ply (idr all the types) or more, with a concave, its 99% going to service you just fine.
Buy the brand you like/think is cool/cheap/whatever. I used to buy a lot of Girl, Almost, Baker, etc. and then started supporting my local shop buying their decks. Nowadays i just buy the cheapest shop deck my local sells, otherwise i get the cheapest blanks and sticker job the fuck out of it every time.
This. My old neighbor owned a skate shop and I'd get random sample decks from time to time from companies I couldn't name if I wanted to. They all did the job. One day on a rail and they're indistinguishable anyway.
I’ve found you can find boards on sale for cheaper than my local skate shop sells shit, even their blanks. Their blanks are $50.
You can get a mini logo for like $30, and I’ve found flips, primitives, reals, powells, and other known brands for less than the blanks my shop sells.
I wouldn't buy a complete. I'd buy the parts you want then assemble it.

im not sure but i got into skating around 2017 and started playing THPS and seeing darkstar boards that looked sick, and trying to find some and only really seeing them at walmart
lol trick board
sucks that darkstars are walmart boards now
Ya dark star used to be dope, now they are the cheap Walmart special
Dope D3s
Classic, I would not dare skate in them but for sure they are for styling...haha
You should skate in them best skate shoe ive used imo. Only downfall is the bubble in heel explodes out after you land you first trick in them lol
Ripped baggy jeans, D3s, and a darkstar deck. Is it 2002 again?
Looks like a 7.0” too
They did say “trick board”. It’s not 2002, it’s lost in the matrix
All the worst trends in one photo.
Hey thanks for your positive comments, have a great day!
Yep ! Nuge ripped on that one!
Sierra went huge
Fowler, corey killed it!
The whole team!
Hey, u/i-tell-ya-hwat, we'd love to know where you got this video. A credit to the source or at least the name of the skateboarder if it's not in the title. If you already provided it then thank you and disregard.

Highly recommend Manak Skates. Hand shaped and pressed. Such a nice person. $80 for a deck and this is all it came with.

I was just browsing their website 10 minutes ago!
Pull the trigger!! Such sick boards
Yeah the 9.2 symmetrical twin tail Voodude looks really interesting to try next. Worried it might feel small going from a 9.8 but I'm interested to try a symmetrical shape and I like supporting smaller companies. Think I'll pull the trigger.
Good dude- great decks! ❤️
This is rad to see. I've known Jonny for a long time. Good dude.
I herd 10 seconds of a song just now, can totally get behind it. Thanks for the new rec 😂
Manak is a good dude. He's given me advice on board building on fb groups.
I am not rich at all lol, but i am looking somewhere under $300 And has good wheels where you can do powerslides, magic slides, transitions and all that easily
For that budget you have many good freeskates available. I recommend measure your feet and check the sizing chart of each skate/model.
Some models run narrow, some run wider, and this can be decisive for getting a good fit. Particularly so when you chose the right length.
Popular mid-high freeskates in your budget are: Rollerblade Twister (narrow), Powerslide Next (narrow), FR FR1 or FR2 (wide), Flying Eagle F6 or F7 (narrow) or Micro MT Plus (narrow, I think). I am not 100% sure that FR1 is inside your budget, but more or less... Also, you can get something really decent in the 150-200$ range.
I would go for a Powerslide next skate. I like the core 80.
I bought the Flying Eagle F5S Eclipse skates recently in a sale for approx $160 delivered here in the UK and love them. They are rockerable and are pretty similar as the slightly more expensive F6s but the other /u/DaniDevil3 mentions are also meant to be great.
>Can anyone recommend me a good freestyle skate for a reasonable price?

>I am not rich at all lol, but i am looking somewhere under $300 And has good wheels where you can do powerslides, magic slides, transitions and all that easily
A point of clarification: "freestyle" generally refers to those skates that are specifically designed and optimized for freestyle slalom skating, and is a distinct class from "freeride" skates that are purpose-built for urban skating & powerblading.
The main differences are in the style and materials of the boot construction, with freeride/urban skates using thick thermoplastic/fiberglass shells, while freestyle/slalom skates using thinner thermoplastic/fiberglass or carbon-fiber layers. While this makes freestyle/slalom skates more lightweight, it also makes them less robust than the typical freeride/urban skates, as seen with this example.
Also, with pricing, it will be difficult to find a quality set of freesyle/slalom skates for $300 USD or less, while a number of upper-tier and top-tier freeride/urban skates (including the Twister Edge (both the standard model and the higher-trim Twister Edge X), Next Core (in 4x80mm, 4x90mm, and 3x100mm), FR3 & FR2 (in both 4x80mm and 3x110mm), and Uptown) can be had within that budget.
Looking for a new freestyle deck to handle small to medium jumps and rails, something mostly camber with some flat or rocker near the contact points, mid-soft to mid park flex with good pop. I'm 6' 150lbs size 9 boot. Replacing an endeavor pioneer 152 that I cracked the core on late last season. Had my eye on a Ride Zero 151 or the Nidecker Gamma 153, but open to any/all suggestions.
DOA, Huck knife, Rome Agent. For a bit softer you have the Ride Kink, Rome Artifact.
Also the Lobster Shifter, full camber but with some 3D in the tips so it doesn’t catch like a standard camber. I rode one most of last year it’s a great deck.
I was going to recommend the Rome Artifact or Artifact Pro.
Outsiders. Process. I know they have flat at the contact. Huck knife might as well? Personally I like the free thinker for larger jumps, though tip to tail camber with distant contact points but to each their own.
Zero is softer than you're likely thinking. Haven't ridden it on snow yet but I picked up a General Public for jibbing and small park
Thanks, I'm open to a little softer than middle of the road since this is a dedicated park board, it's mostly for lapping peace park at copper, but I would like it to not fold on me on the M jump line.
Just checked out Angry's review, the GP sounds like a good option too.
Again, haven't ridden it yet but have obviously flexed it and have tooled around a bit on it on my carpet with a homemade rail. I'd call it pretty similar in flex to my Party Platter, and I've taken that thing on 40 footers. Sketchy at that size. Around 30 footers and over, you should really be aiming to try and bolt your landings, so I'd imagine it's pretty similar. Other board I was looking at was the Telos Legend, I just ended up with a better deal on the Public
My friend just got a capita doa, I didn’t do much research into it but it seems to check all those boxes from what he told me
Check out the rossignol jibsaw. It has camber between feet and friendly rocker points on the tips. Mid flex, easy to learn park on.
This is what I'm working with these days. Can't really choose a favorite, they're all so fun to ride for different reasons. I've decided to get a surfskate next, haven't nailed down which one yet. Suggestions welcome!
Get a Santa Cruz Winkowski, great width for surfskates. Throw some Carver CX trucks on it and call it a day!
I have actually looked into building exactly what you just described. Lol. Then I thought I'd just get a carver complete to avoid setup. Then I keep going back and forth between the CX and C7... So many options!
Try the CX first. C7 has deeper carve but can feel unstable in bowls. My favorite board is a Powell Ripper Geegah shape with CX and Powell Dragons 66mm/88a. A little narrower than a winkowski. Also, I have those Grabke wheels!! Love light-ups.
What’s the far right one? Is it a complete from Santa Cruz or is it made from different parts?
It was a complete I bought on market place for $60. I put the angled risers, and new wheels and bearings on it (60mm Claus Grabke Slime Balls/ Bones Big Balls) and the rib bones for aesthetics. The only thing I didn't change was the trucks (I always liked Krux K5'S anyway).
Thanks on the info!
Those three bad boys look sickkkk AF :) Enjoy the concrete wave!
Thank you! They're definitely fun!
That Claus is sick!
Why not 💪🏻
I've been riding this for a few weeks learning how to slide. Recently curbed it, but got some epoxy for that. Board is switchblade 40, trucks are caliber 2s, bushings are nipples, wheels are durians. Gripped it myself with some Vicious clear.
Try getting some remember hoots in 78 or 82a. Trust me. You will slide.
The durian 80a are supposed to slide nicely
They are big and soft. They make horrible screech sounds and are fairly inconsistent, that goes for all of Orangatangs original freeride wheels. Trust me. Get remember hoots, or lil hoots. The smaller the wheel the easier the slide also, durians are just too beefy unless you are doing very fast freeride
You’ll want proper grip as you learn to slide. Makes it so much easier when your feet don’t slip around when you’re trying to kick out. Clear grip looks nice for carving but is notoriously bad for actually gripping
Actually it's vicious clear tape. It's the coursest one they sell. It feels like a pile of broken glass to the touch.
Vicious clear is probably the best clear grip out there but after less than half a year all those sharp granulars flake off and it doesn’t perform nearly as good.
If it’s working out for you then great, don’t change it. But as someone who’s cracked a helmet from a foot slipping off I’d get seismic lokton or bones hardcore 36 grit. Lokton is probably the most grippy and long lasting stuff out there. Hardcore is a bit less grippy but forms to concave better. Both might feel less sharp than fresh vicious but after a month they’ll feel grippier because the granulars stay on

best freestyle skateboard
Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Freestyle Skateboard:
Deck Shape and Size: Look for a deck that is wider (7.5" to 8.5") for stability, with a concave shape to help with tricks. A shorter deck can be better for freestyle tricks.
Material: Most decks are made from 7-ply maple wood, which offers durability and flexibility. Some may also use bamboo or composite materials for a lighter weight.
Trucks: Choose lightweight aluminum trucks that are durable and provide good turning capabilities. A width that matches the deck width is ideal for balance.
Wheels: Softer wheels (78A to 87A) are better for freestyle skating as they provide more grip and a smoother ride, while harder wheels (88A and above) are better for street skating.
Bearings: Look for high-quality bearings (ABEC 5 or higher) for smooth rolling and speed.
Grip Tape: Ensure the skateboard has good grip tape for better foot traction during tricks.
Recommendations:
Element Skateboards: Known for their quality and durability, Element offers a range of freestyle decks that are great for beginners and experienced skaters alike.
Santa Cruz Skateboards: Their decks are well-regarded for their performance and style, making them a solid choice for freestyle skating.
Powell Peralta: A classic brand with a reputation for high-quality boards, Powell Peralta offers decks that are perfect for freestyle tricks.
When selecting a freestyle skateboard, consider your skill level and the types of tricks you want to perform. A well-balanced board that fits your style will enhance your skating experience.
