TL;DR
Wheel Hardness and Size
For park skating, harder wheels are recommended to maintain speed and allow for smoother slides. Many skaters suggest wheels with a hardness rating of 98A or higher for park surfaces [3:2]
[4:6]. The size of the wheels can also impact performance; smaller wheels (around 55mm) can help manage speed while still providing the benefits of harder wheels
[4:6].
Skate Components and Modifications
While some skaters find success with stock setups, others recommend specific modifications for enhanced park performance. Adding grind blocks can facilitate stalls and slides [3:1], and wider trucks can provide more stability during tricks
[3:1]. Popular skate setups mentioned include Antik AR1 boots with Powerdyne Revenge plates and CIB Ramp Wheels
[3:1], as well as Moxi Lollys with Fundae wheels for beginners
[3:2].
Deck and Truck Choices
The choice of deck and trucks can greatly affect your park skating experience. Some users prefer decks like DK Popsicle or Islander Ramps paired with Caramel trucks for their setup [5:5]
[5:3]. These combinations offer good balance and control, which is crucial for performing tricks and maneuvers in a skate park.
Personal Preferences and Style
Ultimately, personal preference plays a significant role in choosing a skateboard setup. While technical specifications are important, many skaters emphasize the importance of feeling comfortable and confident with their setup [1:2]. Trying out different components and configurations can help you find what works best for your style and skill level.
Recommendations Beyond Discussions
If you're new to park skating, start with a basic setup that includes hard wheels and gradually add components like grind blocks and wider trucks as you become more comfortable with advanced maneuvers. Consider visiting local skate shops for advice and testing different setups before making a purchase.
Hi!
So, I've been roller skating (I have quad skates) for 10 months now. I've been really scared of going to the skate parks but I did go for a few times and I really liked it.
I have sure grip boardwalks and 57mm wheels. What are your recommendations for skates and setup as well? Would help me a lot. Heard about bonts but I don't like the look of it (as much as it is superficial, I think having the skates on you really like is essential).

Thank you
Lots of skaters use the Boardwalks in the park and love it so I don't think you need to get a new pair unless you want two separate pairs. The wheels you use are more important. The harder they are the faster you will go. Lots of beginners are fine with using soft 78A wheels. I found them to be too sticky so I have been using Moxi Fundaes rated at 98A but feel more like an 86A. The hardest wheels you can buy are 103A and those babies are FAST so not recommended for someone just starting unless you are set on using them. You don't actually have to change anything on your skates to go into the park. You don't need to have sliders or grind trucks until you are ready to slide or grind. You can learn how to drop in and do stalling tricks without them!
Big tip. Get good toe stops!! I personally like gumball toe stops and chaya cherry bomb toe stops for their grip on different surfaces and the fact that they don't shread easily. You will use your toe stops a lot in the beginning.
That was extremely helpful, I have not thought about toe stops, will look up the ones you recommended. Thank you!
I already have a set up: Bont Park stars with reactor pro plate and I am very happy with it. But if I would be making a new setup, I would definitely choose the Adapt boot (fairly easy to convert to quads) or eventually some other aggressive inline boot.
Having a lot of fun with this setup. Really like how it performs. DK Popsicle 36mm, BRT 36mm, Maple Shark Wheels.
Sick graphic! Is it maple lab deck?
Yup!!
Sehnsucht 36mm, 34 brts and piro bowls
33mm tonicwood carbon core, dynamics, urethfb recycled wheels
Too dope 👌
34mm og saltwater, 34mm BRT, salmon oak wheels, black velvet tape
Twin 🤙
I am a beginner skater and was under the impression that all I need to do is switch to harder wheels for skate park surfaces, but a friend just told me that I would need to modify my skates to accommodate grind blocks and wider trucks, or even get new skates altogether. However I have heard of people just switching their wheels (hence my initial assumption), so I'm curious to hear what the general consensus is!
What skates do y'all use and what modifications have you made, if any? For those of you who also do indoor or street skating, do you switch between skates, or use the same pair for all surfaces?
I have Moxi Beach Bunnies, if anyone happens to have any insight as to how those hold up at the skate park, or what modifications would need to be made to make them park safe!
I’m a beginner park skater as well (3 mos now). I started with my Moxi Lollys and standard Gummy wheels. I really only practiced pumping and carving and did just fine. After that I switched to moxi trick wheels which allowed for tighter carving. I now have the Fundae wheels which are AWESOME for beginner park skaters. Until I get better, I’m sticking with the Fundaes before going back to the Trick wheels.
PS: I currently have 3” Penny trucks and CIB sliders. However, they’re not essential. Just like another commenter stated, it makes some things easier but it’s not necessary.
Edit: Forgot to mention I use my Fundaes for park, indoor, and some recreational outdoor skating! They’re pretty versatile.
Honestly I skated on ramps and streets for about one whole year with my derby skates before switching to Moxi Lolly rollerskates with CiB sliders on. I generally use hard wheels (98A or up) and recently changed my trucks to larger ones because I'm practicing grinds.
I keep regular trucks with 78A wheels mounted on in my backpack so when I'm going back home from the skatepark I can simply switch the trucks and wheels together and I have a street setup ready.
But really, you need so little to skate at the park. If you're insecure about wheels and you're just starting maybe you can consider the Radar Energy wheels 57mm 78A. That's all! Beach Bunnies are fine for the skatepark, I see many rollerskaters using them : )
The wheels depend on the surface. A wood ramp can be slippy if its dusty or dirty. A smooth concrete park can be super smooth and grippy, but the older ones can be rougher and not much fun on really hard wheels.

I ride CIB ramp wheels , they are hard work best on smooth concrete but im fine on wood ramps as long as I dont rely on them gripping too much.

It's really a case of what you are riding on and how you feel. Going a bit softer gives you more grip but a bit less speed which is probably a good thing when you are starting out.

Wide trucks will change the way your skates feel , I'd save them for later.

Grind blocks are great, but again I'd save them for later they don't make stalls easier I don't think. Without grind blocks you will lock onto the coping more and as a result be more stable learning stalls.

In short, learn the basics , dropping in, carving, stalls etc then consider upgrading as you need it. Beach bunnies will do you fine for some time.
i use beach bunnies at the skate park all the time! and i never even switched wheels out lol. mine still have the original glittery beach bunny wheels.
You don’t need to add slide blocks, they do make stalls and drop ins a bit easier, and they allow you to slide, but you can do just fine without. Same with the wide trucks, they’ll make some stuff easier but they’re not necessary.
My current park setup is Antik AR1 boots, Powerdyne Revenge plates, CIB trucks, CIB Ramp Wheels, and I’m just waiting on my CIB slide blocks to ship and then I’ll have them (before that I had their Gen 2 sliders).
I have two sets of skates, those ones and a pair of Moxi Lollys for cruising/outdoor skating/a little jam skating.
Trying to figure out how to best upgrade my Lolly’s so I can advance at the park! I currently rock the stock plate, cushions, and trucks.
I got fundae wheels and they really helped in the park!! Perfect mix of not being full on park wheels (compared to my bowl bombers) but useful always!! I was skeptical of the fundae hype but I get it
I second the harder wheels comments but for different reasons. It’s great to be able to maintain speed with a harder wheel but harder wheels are also more slippery and less likely to get caught under you as you fall. You want wheels that will slide out when you fall. If you’re worried about getting too much speed with a harder wheel you can get small (55mm or so) wheels. The smaller size will cut down on the speed a little.
Hmm yeah I really do not like slipping and sliding. I like being in control. I bought 57mm 98A wheels for the rink and I fucking hated them. I love using my radar energies at the rink though. So I had that same mindset going to the park. I guess I have to try a little bigger wheels because not much is out there in the 80s hardness in 57mm. I’m very sensitive to change ugh
Your next move should definitely be harder wheels, I park skate in hard wheels with no other big upgrades and it works fine
If you already have harder wheels maybe slide blocks next if you want. Cib are good but very very slippery but brunny blocks are cheaper and more stable
I currently use my radar energy wheels. I’m not ready for the speed with harder wheels yet lol and I have wildbone blocks already!
Depending on how hard you go don’t worry about a plate upgrade yet, but hard(er) wheels are a must. You’ll just wear yourself out in outdoor wheels and maintaining momentum will be an issue as you progress. I’m on a Jack 1 with the heavier Avanti plate, discblox, discotrux, and rollerbones team wheels in 98.
HAPPY CAKE DAY!! 🎉
Thank you! I didn’t even realize 😅
I’d have to say this is my number 1. No other set up I have feels as good as this one.

The grip job is ass sorry dude but apart from that 7-8/10
I concur. Looks like my kid did it. Looool
It looks like 9/10 but the parts are 10/10. I literally love those wheels and that graphic😭😍😍
5/10 but 10/10 for parts
It needs some fake brts
Y fake brts?
Inside joke, but I'd give it a 5/10 because alot of people have the combo
The fuck? Fake brts? Bro stop buying fake shit. Support the community and buy original
Bro the gripjob is fucked up if you want i can give you some tips on how to do It better
Clean!
Now this is a 10/10
Favorite setup and graphic rn I got 3 more of them including 2 pink ones
What wheel would you recommend for a beginner park skater and why?
Spitfire Formula Four's. Really smooth ride and really durable.
What size would you go for? 8 inch deck if that matters
I've got an 8 inch too and I'm running 53mm 99a. Really like how they feel and it keeps the board nice and light too.
Trying to puzzle together my first ever setup. Imma mostly cruise around town on rough surfaces, but also wanna do some tricks. Built everything from different stores, cuz norwegian taxes are TOO MUCH. Plus planning on doing a similar griptape design as in pic 4. What do you think?
A+. You could arguably go for softer wheels, as those dragons I think are 93a durometer.
But the green on green with black trucks is fire.
Thank you very much! I have considered softer ones, but i would really like to join my local skating community at the skateparks sometime. I heard that these dragon wheels are greatly versatile for both rough cruising and tricks, so i opted for them. But ill definitely think more about it!:)
I rock 80a 60mm wheels at the park. By the time the advantages of smaller harder wheels really come into play you’re going to have worn out this setup and replaced it.
That’s to say don’t worry about what your first setup , what you like and works for you is really individual so no one else can tell ya and you can’t tell yourself rn.
But after riding for a bit you’ll get a better idea of what you like and what setup you want.
You can always swap out individual parts as you go or have multiple boards.
skating since 1982; that's a sweet setup I'd ride ANY day! ps: nice on the slayer trucks etc. more of a Metallica & Anthrax girl myself, but hell yes!!!
Amazing, thank you very much!! Anthrax is so good, id lowkey buy 1 Slayer truck and 1 Anthrax truck to pair em up lol:D
nice, that would ALSO be awesome! 🤘🏻
Looks good. Send it. Get some wax because those wheels will bite but no enough to need risers.
Thank you, will do!
Yeah looks like it’d be a good all round board, the wheels are on the larger side of non vert skating I think so should go over most terrain and the board isn’t super wide so it’ll flip easy if that’s what you’re wanting too. Can’t say I’ve ever heard of a deck being made of birch though, keep us updated on how it skates! Oh and for the grip art you wanna cut through the back of the grip tape it’s so much easier. Good luck!
Thank you for the advice on the grip tape and overall feedback! I will definitely keep you posted on the birch deck:D
Flood the comments everyone! I wanna see it all: your skates, your gear, your tools, accessories, you name it, give it to me, new and old 🤩 (I’ll start ^^^)
Park set up. Will share my others when I get home ✨
Ooh what plate is that?
Looks super sick!
Pilot falcon plate. The grind block is Discoblox low rider 😎
Beautiful skates! ✨Where did you get the harness from?
That goes really hard, no lie.
Omfg those are sick!
Nice those wheels look like candy
Ooooooh the boot looks amazing!
Kinda looks 80s with the saturated teal blue and hot pink
Oh yea this is the one 🤌
Such a vibrant blue!
Thought I'd treat myself to a new setup since it's been a while. I already have another set of bigger softer wheels to cruise to the skatepark so I wanted to try out some hard ones for a change.
I would go for a 99a
And conical full.
Also never had too much success with the bones big balls. Bronson g2’s are better in this price range. The big balls got slow pretty fast.
Regular bones reds are pretty good for me, I don't know about the big balls though.
Classics are the goat
Valid asf I remember when lurpivs first came on the scene I got my hands on one of the first batches from Sweden they’re sweet but feel kinda high and are pretty touchy when turning, I never skated aces but I’ve heard they feel similar
Def just hang the board raw isn't a skate company so unless it's like a ps stixx or dwindle I wouldn't trust it to skate well
bro that decks is so sick whats the brand ?
Hahaha fr I'm pretty sure it's made by raw themselves. Found it on marketplace I'm picking it up later today
if I were you I would keep that for decoration and buy my self a deck to skate something like powell-peralta or blind something like that
