TL;DR
RPGs with High-Level Caps
For those who enjoy RPGs that allow grinding to high levels, the Disgaea series is well-known for its absurdly high level caps and complex character-building systems. Other notable mentions include the Star Ocean series, where players can reach up to level 255, and Rune Factory 4, which combines farming with RPG elements and allows for extensive character development [1:2]
[1:10].
Loot-Based Games
Games like Warframe and Path of Exile offer a rich grinding experience through loot collection and character progression. Warframe provides an extensive amount of content with frames and weapons to farm, while Path of Exile offers deep customization options and a satisfying loot system [2:1]
[3:12]. The Monster Hunter series, particularly Monster Hunter World and Rise, is also praised for its grindy nature, allowing players to farm monsters for better gear and weapons
[4:3]
[5:2].
Sandbox and Open-World Games
Games like No Man’s Sky and GTA Online are excellent choices for players who enjoy open-world exploration and grinding. No Man’s Sky has improved significantly since its launch and offers a satisfying experience of collecting better tools and ships [5:1]. GTA Online provides endless opportunities for grinding money and completing heists, making it a popular choice for those who enjoy building wealth and assets in a virtual world
[2]
[5:5].
Economy and Community-Driven Games
For players interested in games with well-developed economies and community interaction, Black Desert Online is a highly recommended title. It features a complex in-game economy and a constant grind, appealing to those who enjoy engaging with other players and trading [4:1]
[4:5]. Additionally, Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is known for its long-term grind and active player-driven economy
[4:9].
These games cater to different preferences within the grinding genre, offering a variety of experiences from traditional RPGs to sandbox adventures and community-focused titles.
Just to clarify, this is a recommendation post as basically what I am looking for is RPGs that let me grind to crazy levels because I have been so glued to the Disgaea games lately that basically I wanted to take a break from them to see what other (video game) RPGs let me build up my characters to high levels.
Systems that I am looking to play such a game on are the following: 3DS, PS3, PS5, Xbox and PC as I wanted to again explore more RPGs that somehow let me go way beyond level 99 as I am ok with a thin story, but as long as the gameplay is engaging by letting me pick all kinds of character classes such as a wizard or a battlemage.
Star ocean series has cap of 255 and you finish the games around 60-80 so that's a lot of extra leveling.
FFXV has level 120 and it takes some time to get there.
Trails games have high level caps though it applies to second entries in an arc onwards. It does it so that characters don't feel like they reset between entries eg you start cold steel II at level 40 ISH and the cap is 200 I believe.
The game is all about team building. I'm not sure how far you got, but the main story is basically just the tutorial. End game is where it really opens up. You're expected to essentially break the game with your teams, and you'll run into enemies that are just as broken. Fights are pretty autopilot, and are mostly just about whether or not the enemy has something that counters your strategy. And the game has turbo mode, macros, and a battle history log to accommodate this.
The first team I made was all about dodging attacks. On dodge, my monsters would automatically counter attack. Counter attacks would drain enemy stats and buff my team, and then each counter attack would have a percent chance to chain another counter attack. It struggled more with enemies that cast spells, so I added a monster that would cast silence at the start of the fight. I could still lose to enemies that could reflect damage or confuse my monsters. That's a lot of the gameplay loop. Clear floors until you hit a wall, figure out how to make your team stronger or shore up weaknesses. Or level up a new character class and build a whole new team.
Steam, Switch, android, not sure about apple... It's quite addictive. My teams aren't quite that high, only like 11k...
Basically look into Nippon Ichi games for anything with insane numbers
Pretty standard, gain exp for battles and level up. You can beat it the first time around level 90. But there’s new game + mode and another character story to play, where you can continue and reach 255
Definitely check it out. You mentioned character classes, and it has that too. Lots of them. And you build your monster party strategically around the unique quirks of the class. It’s perfect for people that like to theory craft builds and tinker with deep systems.
Star Ocean Second Story R has a max level of 255
Does the game ever get hard? I played this for a few hours but I seem to recall you could find so much OP stuff early that it made everything seem trivial.
There are new difficulty levels if you feel strong enough. And on the latest patch it even has CHAOS difficulty. For real challenge.
Yes. If you keep going, it will get harder. In SO2R it can be easy to get ahead of the power curve quickly in the early game, but eventually the big power spikes for your characters slow down while the enemies keep getting stronger.
Rune Factory 4 is the Disgaea of farming sims. Can even grow your own weapons and dungeons
The next Rune Factory, RF: Guardians of Azuma, comes out in two weeks so OP might want to keep an eye on that. Agreed start with RF4 though even if it is, technically, an upscaled 3DS game.
Fantasy Life I just came out. While you can't do level 9999 shenanigans, the game has 14 jobs (lives) and well over 100 hours of grinding available to it.
And for regular jRPGs, kinda surprised nobody mentioned Tales of Graces f.
I enjoy grinding for camos in cod zombies and sometimes multiplayer. I enjoy grinding for money in gta I also enjoyed grinding fallout 4 because you can always find better weapons and have fun with putting attachments and what not on it. I find it satisfying to also collect a lot of stuff in game and to see my progress.
I can't speak for the current state of the game but Destiny 2 was probably the absolute grindiest game I ever played. Cool powers and weapons. Lots of quests and stuff to get unique gear and weapons.
Path of Exile 2 season 3 comes out friday, perfect time to jump in !
Warframe
Helldivers 2
This is the correct answer.
For Managed Democracy!
Warframe as said above, frames and weapons to farm and level up to get your mastery level up on top of an insane amount of content.
Division 2, tons of builds to experiment with and lots of things to grind towards
Borderlands series. Multiple characters to reach max level with and make busted builds. Then head into the endgame grind of OP or Mayhem levels
Diablo series, 4 more for a MMO like experience with some world spawns and events, 3 and 2 for solo grinding
Deep Rock Galactic, incredible co-op experience with lots of stuff to play towards. Rock and Stone!
Not necessarily a gear or leveling grind, but the modern Assassin Creed games (origins, Odyssey, etc) are great turn your mind of a check off all the PoI on the map. Trust me there is a butt load. Plus, all the games have great visuals.
I'm looking for a grindy game where you are able to farm for weapons, armor and gear etc, and improve you character and focus on different types of builds. Also the loot pool being satisfying with different rarity of gear and making those rare items feel satisfying to finally get when you farm for it. Any suggestions?
Eh. While for a veteran of the ARPG genre, ND even then PoE is on another level, unless a new player wants to dedicate a lot of time to learning minutia, PoEis not going to be it for a new person.
The only unsatisfying part about it is unless you’re studying what constitutes a good crafting base, you’re probably just going to be grinding for currency. That said: jesus crust it feels good when you get the earblowing noise when a divine orb drops.
Yup and I personally recommend to start with mh World
I tried mh rise but there were so many mechanics dumped on me all at once I didn’t last an hour. Do people still play world?
Great game and a lot of fun, but I definitely wouldn't put it into a "grind" category like OP is asking for.
Imo it feels fun with leveling gear, just blasting through the acts feeling powerful lol. But i can also understand why some people find it a slog.
I need to go back to Remnant. I can't figure out how the class combinations and stuff is meant to work. I was doing fine but I didn't find much that revolutionised my build besides the archetype choice.
Archetype combos, traits and boss weapons is the focus of their variety. It's a great game. Would recommend joining others maps as most people are just running for bosses!
Warframe is exactly what u want.
The only thing that drives me nuts about Warframe is the inability to just start fresh with a new character without registering a new account.
Like, I played so long ago that I know they've made a ton of improvements and changes and onboarding revisions and I'd love to just start from scratch, but as far as I know there's just no way to reset to a fresh start. It's wild to me. There should be no technical reason they couldn't just wipe your story progress and start over, even if they then re-assigned any real-money purchased loot after the tutorial or whatever.
There’s no rarity types in remnant though, still a great game for builds and such
Absolutely! Probably one of the better single player grinding kind of games out there. Because there's an incredible amount of depth in terms of mastering weapons and learning the different monsters. But I absolutely still reccomend if possible trying co op with buddies. Because it's so fun with friends too.
I want a game that is very grindy and you can spend hours doing the sme thing, but somehow it isn't boring. Games like GTA Online (the businesses and heists and moneymaking part of it), Warframe, Minecraft Hypixel skyblock.
I want a game with an involved wiki, that is not too hard to get into, but can expand quite a lot, up to the point where half of the gametime is spent reading the wiki and watching youtube guides.
I also love games with well-developed economies between players.
I don't like extremely high-skill ceilings, but I love learning new mechanics that are easy to perfect.
Monster Hunter is my go to grindy game
Mon Hun is wonderful for grinding but if OP wants a low skill ceiling this aint it.
I will say that you can definitely clear the game if you just have good fundementals but MH can get difficult sometimes.
Monster Hunter Rise did a much better job than most in the series when it came to scaling the game's difficulty. Normally I'm a little hesitant to recommend a monster hunter game for anyone who's looking to avoid difficulty, but that's the one exception.
MH Rise is a great game to start the series with; it offers a lot of features that make it accessible to people new to the series while offering a lot of new content for veterans. If OP wants something with a bit more of the original MH spirit, MH World is absolutely amazing. I've been playing since the original on the PS2 and MHW is absolutely my favorite.
Master Rank quests in MHW and Rise can get difficult yes but by the time you reach them you‘re usually also skilled enough at the game to beat them. Honestly though I think MH still has this unjustified reputation of being really hard when in reality MHW and Rise really trivialised things (in a good way) the last, "real" hard MH was Double Cross and even that paled IMO to some of the Underwater fights in 3.
Definitely, I have had too much fun with those games
Monster Hunter controls are way too awkward for most people though
Black desert online is super grindy and fun.
My vote is for BDO as well. Tons to do and literally a constant grind.
Another for OSRS; I don't play it but my husband has been grinding for years 😂
I'd throw in Terraria.
Path of Exile,Good Luck
I love games that involve grinding a lot and progression, you start off with basic weapons and items and from time to time they will get better and stronger for example, any games like that on PS4(I was thinking about Minecraft)
What about monster hunter world? The game is really about killing monsters and looting them to upgrade/ make new equipment.
Spiral Knights is a free MMORPG on Steam. It started out strong, but over time it fell to premium loot boxes, premium currency, and other pay to win negatives. It is possible to get through it without buying anything, but extremely grindy. I do like how you never actually upgrade your character, it's just your weapons and armor that change. Hope this helped!
AC Odyssey
GTA v
Even thought it had a rocky start, No Man’s Sky has gotten much much better since launch with a few updates. It’s pretty grindy but so satisfying collecting better tools, ships and exploring the galaxy.
I’ve been playing rdr2 but it’s been a lot of enjoying scenery and studying animals. I’m looking for a game I can grind and feel some sense of accomplishment, without worrying about micro transactions.
I have Xbox game pass, but any recommendation would be greatly appreciated.
Pro a sly an unpopular opinion but fallout 76 is a hell of a grind. It’s buggie but it hasn’t diminished the enjoyment I get from playing it. I have about 120 hours in and I’m only level 50. The game has improved a lot since it was released.
Well, depends how much time you have on your hands.
If you want to GRIND, Path of Exile is for you. But don't expect to be anything else than a beginner before you played a good 300-400 hours.
Assasins Creed Odyssey...been playing for 130 hours and I still dont have the whole map unlocked. There is a massive amount of content.
Forza Horizon 4. 100% it.
Monster Hunter World is great for the feeling of a grind
Been wanting to find a game like this but never found one that actually were rewarding after a big grind
What everyone finds rewarding is different but some that I personally find rewarding are Diablo-likes. Diablo 2, Torchlight 2, Chronicon, Grim Dawn and Last Epoch are the ones that immediately come to mind.
You left the best ARPG on the market off of your list: Path of Exile
Major announcements for PoE and PoE 2 coming in 12 hours, as well.
I have yet to find any one of those games where it felt rewarding to play vs time needed. (Except Diablo Immortal, IT came VERY close. BUT it actually has the issue where the rewards are not worth it.)
Curious what games might give some good loot and XP a bit faster, and not lock me into a LONG run.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance. You start as a wimpy son of a blacksmith but eventually learn to fight and become a knight.
The most amazing thing about KCD is the fact that when you get to the higher levels in some skills actually reduces the grind. For instance if you spend time picking herbs, you unlock skills where you then can get 2-3x the herbs every time you pick, which means you end up doing it a lot less.
This game respects your time as a gamer!
it is a pretty hardcore rpg, imagine Skyrim but without dragons, since it is a historical rpg based on medieval Bohemia, so there's a lot of grinding, in fact your character can't even read since he is a peasant, but it is something you can also learn
Virtually none, in my experience. In my first playthrough I just followed the main quest with no grinding and did fine.
In my second playthrough I chose a different approach, and basically ignored the main quest while grinding on my own for fun.
Death STranding isn't a game, it's poetry. Either you like it or you hate it, but what it does, it does amazingly.
I played Death Stranding for 10 hours straight today making deliveries to improve my ratings and I got 8 stars from all the locations I delivered to. It felt like I was playing for 3 hours max
Monster hunter world, iceborne
Monster Hunter World.
Im a big fan of Destiny, WoW and most rpgs. But these games have become dead to me, so im looking for a game that has a good end game and grind, something to work towards, and gameplay that has a sense of accomplishment once you finally reach a certain level or something. Only games I'm not generally fond of are PoE2 and diablo, that arpg style doesn't really suit me. Bonus points for a good community to join.
Mmos other than wow that aren't kr based. Monster hunter. Warframe. Remnant 1 and 2. V rising, terraria
Are remnant games grindy? I thought they were souls-likes.
Have you played Witchfire
Monster Hunter. You can't go wrong with World or Rise, both of which have extensive dlc endgames, or you could go with the newest installment, Wilds. Also, Deep Rock Galactic is another good fit if you want a fps of sorts
Warframe, you really feel getting more powerfull as you get more and more things and get into the endgame of the game.
has like 70 different characters to play, all with different abilities and playstyles, hundrets of weapons and mods to make truely uniqe builds.
tons and tons of content to play, very grindy, with challenging stuff to do, but also easy farms for things if you want to shut your brain off.
has 2nd game built into basically with duviri and a lot of other stuff like story, open worlds, linear missions, endless missions.
and its all free to play, where the only things you can only buy for real money are cosmetics made by the community, and the creator gets a cut of every copy sold of his cosmetic.
you can earn the real money currency platinum by farming and trading with players, so you can unlock most cosmetics free to play as well.
on top of that, its one of the best developer teams i know, they really stay connected with the community, up to the CEO, that regularly joins Dev streams to talk with the community.
Will second, third, and fourth this suggestion. I once heard warframe described as "space ninjas with guns."
Its more space ninja demi gods with guns, and thats even better!
I guess I’ll fifth this suggestion.
Monster Hunter
Monster Hunter
Any good arpgs?
Wanting something to grind.
I'm pretty sure my main game is gonna be grim dawn I've had a few people say that one is really good. And then I'm looking at last epoch and Diablo 2 both resurrected and project Diablo 2.
How do I play resurrected and project Diablo?
Also keen on trying v rising as well
I do want to double check if grim dawn worth playing as well as any other games that might be worth checking out. Looking for skill progression and lots of loot to get
I also play warframe, old school rune scape and such as well.
It’s Not a RPG, but if You’re into shooters: Hunt Showdown
I‘m still playing, Even After 5400 hours.
Try valheim, been told it's similar to runescape dragon wilds. The remnant series is a decent looter shooter/souls like with guns, remnant 2 being easily the best. I could gush about this game for hours, so do urself a favour and check out a review. The replayability, insane amount of loot, secrets, boss weapons (my fave is the gun that is made of hands and shoots fingerbones), and multiple worlds (losomn, bloodborne/fantasy themed, yaesha which is basically pans labrynth in a jungle n temples, and nerud which is basically alien covenant/prometheus world) with the ability to "reroll them" effectively resetting and changing the layout, bosses, items and loot, and most importantly the quest and final boss of each world(they usually also have "alternate kill methods" which give different boss loot. There's even a backroom easter egg, which admittedly takes a ridiculous amount of time grinding e specific loadout of secret/boss gear and unlockable hidden classes. Also, even the items have secrets, like when u examine them in ur inventory sometimes u cna interact with em, and suddenly bam, u had that missing key u needed this whole time, it just needed assembling first.
Remnant is great, but I don't agree about it being a looter shooter
Yeah remnant 1s pretty good, it's just been ages since I played it so I'm foggy on details. And the loo ter shooter thing was abit of a shit description tbh but I couldn't think of another way to describe the sheer amount of weaponry you find, melee and gun wise (some bows too I think, atleast 2 that I know of)
Edit; there's a prequel game called "chronos before the Ashes", which is much more souls like (with abit of sifu's "age each time u die" mechanic). No guns (I think? Also been awhile), but u do get some magic abilities as u go thru the game. Sets up alot of the plot/worldbuilding for the remnant games too, so I'd recommend if not playing it watch a lore recap vid on yt or smth
Is it still worth playing the first remnant game?
Valheim will last maybe like 60-100 hrs. The people who have more than 100 hours usually spend it on base building, and subsequent playthroughs. Amazing game but its not one of those games where you can spend 1000 hours on a single account and still have things to grind for.
Path of Exile is a great game right up your alley, There's a sequel but to get your feet wet into basically millions of hours check out POE, The creators of OG Diablo 2 basically are the ones who created POE 1 & 2.
Yes path of exile is the most obvious choice here, infinite content
Poe 2 is quite different, gameplay are graphics are best in class but some aspects are still better in PoE 1
Agree, there's far more end game content with POE 1 than for 2.
Might I also offer a suggestion since you enjoy Grim Dawn and are interested in Diablo 2: https://forums.crateentertainment.com/t/mod-reign-of-terror/35347
I'm looking for a game that's got a grind to it, but isn't an AFK simulator (so no OSRS)
I want a game where I sink time in to unlock better items/gear or cosmetics. I cannot stand games that timegate you, so games like Destiny where you're locked each week or each day are horrible for me. I have no issue putting time into the game to get to the point where I can grind stuff, as long as I'm not sat AFK for half my time. JRPG's are also a bit out of my remit, they tend to be quite slow and that makes me impatient.
Games I've played before that somewhat scratched the itch;
Diablo 4 and 3 (not keen on 2), Last Epoch, I did sink 100 hours into Destiny, hence how I know how much I hate it, Guild Wars 2 (I'm really not keen on the way levelling is done as I'm someone who gets confused if there's so much to do but not really a "main way" to level), I tried Warframe but the game is really overwhelming and doesn't do a fantastic job showing you what to do in my opinion.
I've also played the monster hunter games to completion sadly.
I'm currently eyeballing Black Desert. I am aware of the common consensus with it, but it seems like the only game that actually gives me the impression of what I want.
If anyone has any ideas, it'd be great. MMO or Solo Play doesn't matter.
PC & Switch both viable options.
Valheim may tickle your fancy, best enjoyed with homies though.
I'm playing solo at the moment, I feel like it has a nice grinding mechanic that leads to the next tier. Always building on the prior tier of grinding.
I did play black desert not long ago, it was fun for both the cinematics and the MMO sandbox feel. The grind is good here as well, but easy to get distracted.
Can veto this. I was looking at valheim as a sandbox game, turns out it’s more grindy than sandbox. Good fun though, but you’ll mostly be stuck mining and riding a ship back and forth. I just use mods to tp ores through portals because of how incredibly tedious it is to use ships
Path of Exile is the obvious suggestion if you liked Diablo, it's similar but more complex and better. (Also, PoE 2 is coming in a year or two.)
Warframe is another infinite grind game, a little similar to Destiny but with way better movement and no real timegating on your advancement. (New Weapons/Frames do take a day/3 to build, but just give you different options and aren't required for any content.)
Those two are, IMO, the best online games running today.
If you liked Monster Hunter, then God Eater 3 is also worth a look.
Not sure I agree with your no real timegating consensus when talking about warframe, you DO need to make new weapons and level them up for mastery levels so you can use different weapons and mastery levels are required for some quests iirc and rivens. Also the faction trust(forgot what it's called rn) is capped at maximum per day and you do unlock some frames and weapons from that.
Right, there are certainly daily faction rep caps, I meant more no real timegating for advancement, like there's no daily/weekly "Only run a boss X times" or "only complete X new unexplored areas" cap, so you can start and just play for 20 hours straight if you like with no real impediments.
The new season is August 18th and will include an auto-chess mini-game inside the game which imo looks really nice.
It can be overwhelming and before you can just grind at it, you'll need to at least watch a build guide.
To give you a good scale, it's like Last Epoch, but 1) you need to work on your resistance (not hard) starting Act5 and again at act10 whereas in LE you can slowly work on em when in monoliths and 2) the end game has 10x the content. It's also much less forgiving if you build is random.
The Disgaea series as a whole nails it, but falls into JRPG territory. It's a strategy rpg akin to FFT.
Grim Dawn is Diablo-esque, and arguably does Diablo better than Diablo.
I mean I mentioned I've completed monster hunter and 3 people have mentioned it, it was basically a guarantee someone who instantly think OSRS when they saw grindy lol
Have you looked into Path of Exile?
+1 for Path of Exile
Exilecon news was pretty awesome.
I had the same thing as you, randomly stopped first time, and also played all the games you mentioned.
For a grindy timesink that's actually engaging PoE is the tops. Maybe worth following a guide to hit the endgame and actually experience the game (mapping), as if you're interested in the grind that's the important bit.
2,000+ hours and legit had to force myself to quit eventually. Great game if you don't get too addicted (or can afford the time required to get addicted lol)
