Best Multiplayer Games for Leveling Up

TL;DR

  • Deep Rock Galactic: Cooperative shooter with ranks and promotions [1:1]
  • Guild Wars 2: MMO with extensive leveling and progression systems [5]
  • Apex Legends: Battle royale with a ranking system [4:1][5:5]

Cooperative and PvE Games

Deep Rock Galactic is frequently recommended for players looking for meaningful progression without the stress of competitive play. It's a cooperative shooter where players can rank up and gain promotions through engaging PvE missions [1:1]. Another notable mention is Helldivers 2, praised for its fun co-op experience and teamwork [3:5][4:1].

MMOs and RPGs

For those interested in MMOs, Guild Wars 2 offers a rich leveling system and a variety of activities to engage in [5]. Final Fantasy XIV is another MMO that provides a welcoming community and plenty of content, including dungeons and raids, which are great for progression [1:4][3:1]. City of Heroes Homecoming was also mentioned for its extensive customization options and progression mechanics [1:7].

Competitive Games with Ranking Systems

Apex Legends remains a popular choice for players seeking a competitive environment with a robust ranking system [4:1][5:5]. Warframe, although not primarily competitive, offers extensive grinding and progression opportunities [5:3]. MultiVersus, similar to Super Smash Bros, has a ranking system and rewards players for grinding [5:1][5:4].

Alternative Options

For players looking for something different, Roblox offers a wide variety of mini-games and experiences, allowing for endless exploration and progression [2:1]. Rocket League provides both skill-based progression and the option for split-screen multiplayer [2:3][2:5]. Lastly, Dauntless, though shutting down soon, offers a Monster Hunter-style PvE experience [2:8].

These games offer various forms of progression and leveling up, catering to different preferences whether you enjoy cooperative play, MMOs, or competitive environments.

ORIGINAL POST

As the title says, I am tired of raising my stress levels with ranked league/valo/etc but I really enjoyed the progression of having a rank. I am kind of looking for a MMO or just generally multiplayer kind of game with good progression. I like the idea of MMOs again but I dont really want something that I have to ground 100 hours to have fun (I do like beating dungeons in MMOs). Currently I am playing rimworld and the more casual league games modes as well as some hearthstone but looking for a big game to scratch that itch going forward.

I have played MMOs before such as

  • ESO (Just found it slow and dont want to pay a subscription for all the DLC but enjoyed it otherwise)
  • Destiny 2 (Got a lot of hours here)
  • Warframe (Got alot of hours here too but I don't enjoy the waiting for things mechanic)
  • Diablo/POE games

Destiny is probably my favorite but I feel like I have played it dry and not too interested in the new DLC. I do have lots of solo games so I am kind of hoping for something with some interaction with other people.

If you like Destiny and Warframe you could try out The First Descendant. It came out recently and is free to play. I haven't played much but it's pretty similar to both of those games.

Problem with it is the same as warframe. I spend hours grinding just to have to wait 2 days for a component to finish

From what I’ve heard first descendant is worse than Warframe in that regard

Did you ever find anything? I'm experiencing this exact thing right now with my bro. I see Monster Hunter RIse as a common suggestion, and First Descendant was not very good when I tried it.

1 upvotes on reddit
TumblrForNerds · OP · 1 year ago

I didn’t give first descendent a try. I just can’t bring myself to play a game with timers. I enjoyed monster hunter but to be honest I’m not really enjoying the MMO scene. A friend of mine suggested I join them on WoW because apparently you can just buy one expansion now so I’m considering doing that

Bleed4Glory · 1 year ago

Hmm. If you want an MMO, maybe also give FFXIV a look. I played WoW for over 10 years after launch, but found FFXIV more entertaining when I tried it a few years back. It's subjective of course, but if I'm going to play an actual MMO, I want lots to do with a good community. WoW, for me, was always about the dungeons and loot.

City of Heroes Homecoming.

You gain levels and can pick an ability at certain levels. If you don't gain an ability you instead pick abilities to add enhancement slots. Want your attacks to be more accurate? Stronger? Recharge faster? Take less endurance? Do whatever you want.

The sheer amount of customizing from looks, power sets, abilities, and enhancements is light years ahead of any other game.

Then you get Invention Enhancements that farther increase your abilities to busted strong levels. And yet even more so if those Invention sets are Unique and Epic sets that grant even more bonuses on top of the original bonuses.

Seriously you can become a freaking god among men. Or depending on what you want your back story to be...a literal God among men.

Free to play multiplayer games that aren't shooters or mobas?

Posted by Desocrates · in r/gamingsuggestions · 5 months ago

As title says, looking for something that is multiplayer and free to play, I would prefer PvP but I'm open to PvE as well. Ideally something that doesn't have really long matches and quite importantly that I don't have to spend ages levelling up just to actually play with people, if anyone has suggestions then I appreciate it.

Any alternatives that aren't dead or pay2win/mtx hell?

1 upvotes on reddit
nivekd · 5 months ago

Not sure. One method I use to find games of interest is to check out steamdb, look at top games and filter, so here filtering by free to play and scrolling the list. Don't want to recommend games I haven't tried though.

Quick search there shows everything from Path of Exile 2 to Banana to Summoners War. Doesn't tell you about monetization, but since they're sorted by # of players online by default, you can easily see a list of the top played free games (so not dead) and do a little research on monetization if one looks interesting to you :) Of course, steamdb only works for games on steam

Games will only make it worse in the long-term. I enjoyed Wow for years, but the life cost was too high.

Sports: Adult sport clubs or school sports.

Boardgame sessions: Meetup app will help you find local ones.

Local boardgame stores: offer boardgame sessions or Magic Gathering or a ton other card games.

Volunteer: Meet other great people and help the world be a better place

Gaming is great. But IMO will not effectively provide a meaningful community.

I haven’t played since Endwalker dropped but with subscription it is free up to current expansion and it is free period up to the initial expansion

I have been playing Dead by Daylight since 2017. Cannot recommend it, it's a very toxic community and the suffer percentage doesn't even make up for the shitty spaghetti code the game comes with and the Horror elements have been replaced by neon frantic skins for little Chinese girls who scream like a stuck piglet. If you can see through all this you have a heavily based brand asym game with a lot of players and some cheaters like in any other multiplayer game.

I've tried a lot of other multiplayer games and none have caught me like DBD. Well there is this one called Battlefield 1. That's one solid second 👌

Have been playing the newly anticipated Arc Raiders for the last couple of days and it has me hooked.

So if anyone else can suggest a solid multiplayer came: then hit me.

Helldivers 2 is crazy fun.

1 upvotes on reddit
Scary-Blacksmith3110 · 5 months ago

🔥 Shooters:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III / Warzone – Fast-paced, polished, and super active.
  • Helldivers 2 – Insanely fun co-op chaos with real teamwork and friendly fire.
  • Apex Legends – Still one of the best squad-based battle royales out there.

🌍 Survival / Co-Op:

  • Sons of the Forest (console version coming) – If you're into base building + horror.
  • Deep Rock Galactic – Space dwarves + mining + aliens = perfect co-op.
  • Grounded – Honey, I Shrunk the Kids vibes with friends? Yes please.

🛡️ Fantasy / RPG:

  • Elden Ring (co-op with mods or seamless co-op) – For a more challenging group grind.
  • Diablo IV – Loot-driven, demon-smashing dungeon crawler. Solid party play.
  • Final Fantasy XIV – One of the most loved MMOs if you want to go all in.

🧠 Strategy / Other:

  • Among Us – Still hilarious in party chats with friends.
  • Overcooked! All You Can Eat – Chaotic kitchen mayhem (and friendship tests 😅).
  • Rocket League – Soccer with cars, simple but endlessly fun.

Looking for fun multiplayer games with rank grinding?

Posted by FervorVC · in r/gaming · 3 years ago

Hello. I like grinding level-ups in videogames and prefer to play multiplayer games where you can play and increase your rank that is saved in a cloud. Such as Team Fortress 2 or Combat Arms. And those games must not be cheatable e.g. you load a savegame from the internet and are instantly a max rank with everything unlocked. That's why the level must be saved in the cloud. I wil lgive a list of games that I already know:

HALO Master Chief Collection

all Valve games

Deep Rock Galactic

PlanetSide 2

LoL

Guild Wars 2

NFS World SBRW

Drift City Remastered

Combat Arms Classic

A.V.A

Foxhole

Tower Unite

Wreckfest

Sea of Thieves

Fall Guys

Payday 2

New World

Chivalry 2

MORDHAU

all Diablo

TrackMania United Forever

TEKKEN 7

all Borderlands

Does anyone know any games not in this list, regardless of what genre, that are fun multiplayer games with something to achieve? (Rank grinding)

I like rank grinding because it gives me a reason to play the game. Just for fun would feel almost like a waste of time. Or for me, rank grinding is the most fun.

ever looked into monster hunter? wilds is pretty popular rn. there is a main story but it’s pretty much just kills monsters with skipable cutscenes, and the end game is just kills monsters to grind gear (outfits and fashion too), level up, get better at fighting, etc.

it’s really fun and easy to sink a ton of time into, but mindless enough that i can watch YT or tv on my other monitor too

Old school RuneScape, trust me on this. Thousands of hours of content, regular content updates, and 23 (soon to be 24) skills to grind and progress. Currently sitting at about 200k people online, it's a great time to jump in.

dmnc_cmnd · 2 months ago

Its gotten a little better but theres still a lot of things that aren't explained that thoroughly.

If you learn the basics of modding your warframes/weapons, and just take your time and enjoy yourself early on (no need to rush through the game) it's quite manageable. If you have a friend who is experienced, that is always a good way to learn. Or a nice beginner-focused clan in game that can help you out.

Fortunately the playerbase tends to be very kind to new players who ask for help/advice. Just don't go into the in-game chat begging for free stuff, just be genuine and some people will be naturally generous.

If you wanna stay F2P but earn platinum, you need to trade items with other players. Be mindful that some players overprice their items and you can use a website like warframe.market to make earning plat more reliable and find the actual price of an item

  • Doesn’t need a super high skill cap
  • Preferably has voice chat or good communication tools

Your best bet is to invest in an MMO.

I know it looks like complete ass, but Oldschool Runescape would fit this bill perfectly and will be content, community, and endless grinding/social stuff for the foreseeable next decade!

If it's just too old and ugly. World of Warcraft (classic or retail), Guild Wars 2. WoW has 20 years of content you could explore.

There are others but I'm not sure if they will last a super long time, but Fallout 76 (its much better now), New World, Dune Awakening, etc.

I often find that whenever I buy a new game to play with my friends I’m bored of it within a week. Any game with enough content or things to do that would mean we could play it for a long time without getting bored. I often enjoy open world games as they are less restrictive than more linear level based games, but any recommendations will be greatly appreciated 👍

Best multiplayer games for leveling up

Key Considerations for Multiplayer Leveling Up Games

  1. Experience Points (XP) System: Look for games that reward players with XP for completing missions, quests, or defeating enemies. This helps in leveling up quickly.

  2. Co-op Gameplay: Games that allow you to team up with friends or other players can enhance the leveling experience, as you can tackle challenges together.

  3. Variety of Activities: Games that offer diverse activities (like PvE, PvP, and events) keep the gameplay fresh and provide multiple ways to earn XP.

  4. Community and Support: A strong community can provide tips, strategies, and support, making it easier to level up.

  5. Seasonal Events: Games that feature seasonal events often provide bonus XP or unique challenges that can accelerate leveling.

Top Recommendations:

  1. Destiny 2: A cooperative shooter with a robust XP system, raids, and seasonal events that offer plenty of opportunities to level up.

  2. Call of Duty: Warzone: Offers a fast-paced environment with various modes and challenges that reward players with XP for kills, objectives, and contracts.

  3. Monster Hunter: World: Team up with friends to hunt monsters and complete quests, earning XP and crafting materials to level up your gear and skills.

  4. Genshin Impact: An open-world action RPG that allows co-op play, with numerous quests and events that provide XP and rewards.

  5. World of Warcraft: A classic MMORPG with a deep leveling system, where you can join friends to complete quests, dungeons, and raids for significant XP gains.

Recommendation: If you're looking for a game with a strong community and diverse leveling options, Destiny 2 is a fantastic choice. It combines engaging gameplay with a variety of activities that keep leveling exciting and rewarding.
