TL;DR
Mob Grip
Mob Grip is frequently mentioned as one of the best options due to its high level of grip and durability. It's known for being very gritty at first, which some skaters find excessive, but it maintains its grip over time [1:1]
[1:3]. Mob Grip is also perforated, making it easier to apply without air bubbles
[4:1]. However, some users note that it can be harsh on shoes, suggesting sanding it down slightly if needed
[2:5].
Jessup Grip
Jessup is another popular choice, especially among those who prefer a less aggressive grip. It is often described as having a mellower feel compared to Mob Grip, making it suitable for cruisers or those who want to preserve their shoes [1:3]
[5:4]. Jessup tends to become less sticky after a few weeks, which might be preferable for skaters who need to move their feet more freely
[1:1].
Shake Junt and Grizzly
Shake Junt and Grizzly are also well-regarded brands, though they tend to lose their stickiness faster than Mob Grip [1:2]. Grizzly falls somewhere between Jessup and Mob in terms of grit and durability
[1:3]. These brands might be suitable for skaters who replace their decks frequently and don't mind the initial grip fading over time
[2:3].
Other Options
BlackCat Grip and Ripetape were mentioned as alternatives, with BlackCat offering different thickness options and a good worn-in feel right away [3:1]
[3:3]. Additionally, generic grip tape available at skate shops can provide sufficient grip without being overly coarse, allowing for easier foot movement
[5:2].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
When choosing grip tape, consider your skating style and how often you replace your deck. If you perform tricks regularly, a grippier tape like Mob might be beneficial, while cruisers might prefer Jessup for smoother rides. Always check reviews and possibly try different brands to see what suits your needs best.
I'm putting together a list for my future dream board and can't seem to find a good guide for the different grip tape brands. I've seen some people say that one brand is grippier than another, but nothing that goes over the general consensus of each brand.
Does anyone have any thoughts or know where I could find something similar?
It's hard to be definitive on grip tape lol everyone has a different experience. For me, order of preference would be:
But I guarantee tons of people would have different opinions.
Question though, why do you like certain ones over the others? That seems to be the information I'm having trouble finding, like which ones are grippier? Which ones are softer?
I'll caveat this by saying I'm just one person, but Mob has been the stickiest for me. I don't like when grip tape becomes slippery.
Jessup isn't far off, feels a little courser grit but less sticky if that makes sense.
Shake Junt and Grizzly both seemed to lose stickiness the fastest.
I will say that they all feel about the same at first. So if you replace decks a lot, any will work just fine. I skate my decks for a couple months at least, and Mob has been my favorite.
Bonus that Mob is perforated, so avoiding air bubbles is easier.
I've tried Grizzly / Jessup / Mob and like Mob the best. It's very gritty at first, but once you break it in, it lasts forever. Very durable grip... You can sand it down a bit so it doesn't tear up shoes as quick. I feel more secure riding up ramps with Mob since my feet are more locked in.
Jessup is a bit more mellow in terms of grip / grit, it doesn't tear your shoes as fast but after 2-4 weeks your feet don't really stick to it as easily.
Grizzly falls somewhere between Jessup / Mob in terms of grit / durability.
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate it!
Yo. Here’s my list. From grippiest to least grippy
Mob/grizzly (crazy grippy, too much imo. Sanding it down is a v common thing) Shake junt (super nice but hard to find plain black and is not perforated, also expensive) Mob m-80 (I only skate mob m-80 these days. Cheap and has amazing flick/slide) Jessup (also good but feet will start slipping around after a couple weeks, cheap and feels cheap but def skateable)
Also have tried Primitive brand griptape. Heard it’s the same thing as Diamond grip, which is also the same as Black magic. I’d say it’s more grippy than Shake Junt but less than mob/grizzly
Awesome, thank you for breaking that down! I'm probably overthinking it but this will be my dream set up so I want to actually make a conscious decision.
Hey btw. What are your other dream setup parts? And for future reference tactics.com has reviews on almost all skate gear. I try to make sure I review everything I buy on their site. Also. Idk if u have Swiss bearings in your dream setup but a couple months ago I got the Swiss 6 ball bearings and honestly my 18 dollar Nothing Special bearings were just a tiny step below. I ride 8” primitive boards (wanna try out the 8.125 shape soon tho). Indy forged hollow trucks with bones hard bushings. Formula four spitfire classic shape 99duro. independent hardware and Mob m-80. Riley 2 lakais for shoes. I’ve found finding what you like and sticking with it really allows you to focus on skating technique and building correct muscle memory. Plus I’m old and only have like 4 years of skating left in me
I might be getting a new deck soon and was wondering what the best griptape in your guys’s opinion is. I was thinking of either getting Grizzly or Shake Junt griptape. I am currently skating Active Blank griptape
Mob M 80, if it's too Mob sand it down w/ some Mob to make it less Mob
I use shakejunt but have also had grizzly and they both great
Doesnt matter which one you buy. Just buy the cheapest one or the one you simply like.
Grizzly. Mob has eaten so many pairs of shoes.
I like mob
Looking for some grip tape suggestions. The one on my current setup is trash and looking for an upgrade. Something that feels better, cuts cleaner, ect.
Ripetape slim and catchy, fbs extra smooth.
Blackcat 0.7 the best🔥 Goblin from Dungeon Crawl is also very good
Fbs.
Metric Foamula 1 🇨🇦
BlackCat grip is my absolute fav to use!!
Comes in .7 and 1mm thickness, and it’s 6 sheets for $10. It’s not too bad at all.
Feel super nice and worn in right away, really good grip to it as well and only gets better with time
I started with Jessup, went to Grizzly since the last place I bought my deck only had Grizzly. I do like Grizzly and don’t have any complaints but A couple of my local skate shops have Mob. Is Mob worth a try? I guess I don’t have any experience to compare or tell a big difference.
Mob is pretty nice. It has long lasting grip. I’d say the grip is between jessup and grizzly as grizzly is quite rough as jessup is less rough
Mob, except I wish they weren’t an NHS brand. NHS is becoming a lamer distro every year.
Is NHS the parent company of Santa Cruz?
Sort of. It’s the distribution.
MOB 100% for a 2 main reasons:
It is super grippy. In fact it is too grippy at first so I recommend getting grip gum or abrasion belt cleaner and just rubbing the block on the griptape just a bit to wear it down. Why this is a pro though is that the grip never goes bad. Other brands that start from a less grippy point eventually loose to much grip but MOB gets to a certain point and stays there for the most part.
It is perforated. MOB is the only griptape brand that perforates their grip for some reason. What that means is that there are little tiny holes in the griptape that let air through so you won't get any air bubbles when applying it like you would with other brand of grip.
2.They are definitely NOT the only company making perforated grip. And honestly you don’t need it if you just start from the middle and move out slowly as you press down with your palm.
POV you don't know what you are talking about
Try black magic too, they are hella good
So I am a heavier skater about 280lbs I was 320lbs but with cruising and dieting I've been losing steadily, which brings me to my question. I have some issues moving my feet on the board. It's not cause I'm locking up or afraid to move etc. It's more like my feet are glued to the board. I think the reason is the grip tape is too coarse and just really grabbing my shoes. I guess the issue could also be the shoes but I wear classic vans so I doubt thats it. So assuming it is the grip tape is their a brand of grip tape that is a finer grit? I currently have MOB on their but thats just what the local shop has in stock I can buy online either amazon or wherever if its a finer grit tape. I understand the tape keeps me on the board but for right now my weight does that well enough. Any suggestions would be helpful thank you.
Generic griptape that comes on a roll (you can find it on any skateshop) is good for this because it grips you enough, but not so much that you can’t move your feet.
Another DIY solution is to take a good piece of the same griptape you have on and rub it as if you were sanding the griptape on the deck. I did this on a board that were too grippy, sanding a bit the area where my front foot goes and it was perfect. The center area was less grippy and the rails and tail were left intact so I always found grip to carve at speed or take corners fast.
Honestly this just sounds like you need practice. You shouldn't really be shuffling on the deck. You should be able to move your feet regardless of weight. But as someone who doesn't really like excess grip for tricks myself what I do with new grip is take the excess when I apply it and run it over the grip sanding it off just a little. It only need 2 or 3 passes to take the edge off. It's quite common for dancers and freestyle skaters to do this.
MOB is pretty gritty, for cruisers I prefer Jessup for exactly this reason.
I have an argyle pattern Mob Grip Tape on a Dinghy and I find it to be perfect. I have the normal Mob on a Fireball mini cruiser and it seems more coarse. Maybe try some graphic Mob if your skate shop has it. I’m personally not picky about grip but I’d say my 2 favorites are Mob and Jessup.
I recently bought a new ROG Moonstone ace glass mouse pad, and I found that my razer viper v2 pro skates are absolutely horrible for the pad. I am open for any suggestions, but currently I am looking at four options:
Xraypad Obsidian Pro Air: https://ausmodshop.com/collections/mouse-feet/products/x-raypad-obsidian-pro-air-mouse-skates-universal-dots
Ghostglides Edgerunner: https://ausmodshop.com/collections/mouse-feet/products/ghostglides-edgerunner-skates-cyclone-universal-dots
TJ Exclusives PlastiX Xact: https://ausmodshop.com/collections/mouse-feet/products/tj-exclusives-plastix-xact-replacements-razer-viper-v2-pro
Xraypad Jade Air: https://ausmodshop.com/products/x-raypad-jade-green-mouse-skates-universal-diy-0-8mm-ptfe-dots
Which one of these skates would be best for my mousepad?
Any hard PTFE dot skates go with the reputable skates obsidian pro air
Ok I will get the pro airs
Pro Air are the slowest dot skates.
Pro airs or wallhack skates. Jade airs will wear out quick as they’re not hardened ptfe. Plastix feel like nails on a chalkboard, absolutely abysmal slates.
I’m having trouble trying to decide on what grip tape to buy for my first real board I was looking at am grip and grizzly any suggestions or details on them. I thought I’d ask this question here btw I’m really new to skating only 5 days of experience lol. Thanks for any insight on what is great and what is not.
mob but grip really doesn't even matter it's all the same for the most part
If you've only been skating 5 days, you won't be able to tell the difference between different grip. It's mostly personal preference anyway. Grizzly, mob, jessup, shake junt, black magic, whatever will all work fine. Don't worry so much and just get whatever.
Mob. It is the way.
But in all seriousness if you like Grizzly or other graphic ones don’t sweat it.
Shake junt
Personally I love mob. Really grippy griptape is my favorite.
Been skating mob since I can recall. Some Pepper came into my lap and have been debating. I always enjoyed mob because it eats my shoes and fingers and is grippy as shite. Thoughts on Pepper?
Dunno. I only skate jessup because it's the least grippy.
I just wrote a dissertation on this in my comment, but yea I agree. Now that I think about it, on this sub I’m betting the people that like super grip probably don’t do a lot of flip tricks.
I just tried a switch hard flip with some mob and the board stuck to my front foot and stabbed me in the foot. I never realized less grippy grip tape was better for flip tricks and this could change my life.
I don't flip my board very often. I just don't like feeling "stuck". Sometimes I'll paint my grip black to make it even less grippy
Thisss. That hella grip from Mob doesnt feel good when im flipping anything
FR I cannot be going through shoe soles before uppers
This. 100
I really like Pepper. Right in between Mob and Jessup roughness and it's really durable. They also make Pepper XG (extra grip) which is MORE grippy than mob imo.
I have been skating it for a while, really grippy and at a good price point. Can’t complain.
EDIT:
Their Salt clear grip is really good also and works great for showing top graphics 🫡
Honestly think it doesn’t matter. Grip gets shredded so fast it just ends up being the same thing after a few sessions anyway. It’s just glorified sandpaper at the end of the day if you’re using any decent brand.
for me:
since first trying Pepper, it's gone on 3 of my last 4 boards. mob is great but destroys my shoes too fast.
jessup is great out-of-the-box, but, it seems to wear out before the deck does.
edit: also, after the one deck I recently gripped with Mob, i couldn't unlock my phone for like a week via fingerprint.
Trying to find some new griptape for my board. Ive heard good things about shake junt and black magic but cant find many videos on reviewing it. My current grip is mob, but i feel like its too grippy and wears down my fingers when im holding the board, to the point where im literally bleeding. If anybody knows any good griptapes then please comment!
What are you doing that your hands are bleeding from griptape? This is not the first time I’m seeing someone complain about this and I just dont understand how anyone can manage that… anyway just get jessup.
For me its when i pick up the board by the nose, like snap it up to my hand and when i hold it there, my thumb holds onto the grip. i dont bleed but my thumb gets sore
Just take some leftover grip tape and sand down the mob a little or buy Jessup if you want a less grippy tape.
I’ve tried lots but prefer Jessup because I don’t like it too grippy.
I have been skating for 18 years and riding jessup for 16 of them. Pepper is another good one. IMO mob is too sharp and just unnecessarily destroys hands and shoes. Dont let anybody tell you its bad. Tons of amazing pros ride it. Also I skate everything from bowls to flat bars and manual pads and do plenty of flip tricks and spins and it works well for me on everything.
Glad I'm not the only mob hater lol. I've been waiting to grip up a new deck but the local only has mob rn. Don't got the money to waster on replacing shoes in half the time and I almost feel like it's too grippy, throws me off on flips big time.
Mob absolutely DESTROYED my shoes within a week, I personally prefer Jessup but I've been using it since I started so I'm used to it.
Free grip tape is the best grip tape
90% of skater would not be able to tell the difference in griptape in a blind test. Jessup is good, MOB is good, Pepper, etc.
Eventually you may develop a preference, but probably not.
Listened to everyone else about what grip to get when I was a beginner and actually really dislike mob, it peels off the sides too easily. Grizzly is my preference. Not sure if I’ve used jessup or not
I and many others Can feel the difference between mob and other brands.
Jessup is fine. They're all fine for the most part really, and while some are grippier, some less, they're all perfectly skateable and from my experience they won't make much if any difference to your skating imo.
honestly grip tape is grip tape
Many pros ride it so there must be something to it. Plus it's just griptape in the end, if you go street skating it'll suck after a month anyways
best grip tape for skateboard
Key Considerations for Choosing Grip Tape:
Texture: Look for grip tape with a rough texture for better traction. The grit level can vary, so choose one that suits your riding style (more grip for tricks, less for cruising).
Durability: High-quality grip tape should withstand wear and tear. Look for brands that use strong adhesive and durable materials.
Thickness: Thicker grip tape can provide more cushioning and comfort, while thinner options may offer a more direct feel with the board.
Design and Aesthetics: Many brands offer various colors and designs. Choose one that reflects your personal style, but remember that the grip is the priority.
Brand Reputation: Consider well-known brands like Jessup, Mob Grip, and Grizzly. They are trusted in the skateboarding community for quality and performance.
Recommendations:
Mob Grip: Known for its excellent grip and durability, Mob Grip has a fine grit that provides great traction without being overly abrasive on shoes.
Jessup Grip Tape: A classic choice, Jessup offers a good balance of grip and durability, making it a favorite among skaters.
Grizzly Grip: This brand is popular for its unique designs and reliable grip. It also features a softer feel, which can be more comfortable for your feet.
Takeaway: For the best overall performance, consider Mob Grip or Jessup for their balance of grip, durability, and comfort. If you want something with a unique design, Grizzly Grip is a great option. Always ensure the grip tape is applied smoothly to avoid bubbles, which can affect performance.
