TL;DR
Heat Protectants and Smoothing Products
Heat protectants are essential for blowouts to prevent damage and enhance smoothness. The Redken Big Blowout heat protection spray is popular among users for its effectiveness [1:1]. The Color Wow Dream Coat is frequently recommended for locking out frizz and maintaining straight hair in humid conditions
[3:1],
[5:2]. These products help keep your hair sleek and manageable throughout the blowout process.
Leave-In Conditioners and Oils
For added moisture and shine, leave-in conditioners and oils are beneficial. Users have praised the Amika Detangle Spray for its pleasant scent and detangling properties [1:2]. K18 Hair Repair Oil has been noted for transforming blowouts, while Olaplex No. 6 & 7 are also popular choices for their reparative benefits
[1:2].
Blowout Creams and Mousses
Blowout creams and mousses can add volume and body to your hair. Kevin Murphy's Ever Smooth and Ever Bounce are recommended for those with fine or wavy hair, providing body without greasiness [1:3]. JVN Blowout Cream is another option that users have found effective for smoothing hair
[2:2].
Tools for Blowouts
The right tools can make a significant difference in achieving a salon-quality blowout at home. The Dyson Airwrap is highly recommended for its ease of use and hair-friendly technology, though it comes with a higher price tag [5:3]. For more budget-friendly options, the Revlon One-Step and Amika Blow Dryer Brush are popular choices
[5:1]. These tools help create volume and style with minimal effort.
Additional Tips
Using alligator clips to section hair during styling can improve results by allowing you to focus on smaller sections at a time [5:5]. Additionally, incorporating a good conditioner and hair mask into your routine can enhance the overall health and appearance of your hair, making blowouts more effective
[4:1].
What are your favorite blow out products?? Leave in creams, heat protectants, mouse, hair sprays.. anything , I just want to know your favorites!!
I’ve been looking into getting a blow dry milk/cream from Kerastase or Oribe since I just ran out of some Kenra stuff, but wanted to see everyone’s go-to’s first!
I use the Amika Detangle spray (amazing and smells so good and works), K18 Hair Repair Oil (this one TRANSFORMED MY BLOWOUTS), Olaplex 6 & 7, and sometimes the morocanoil hair oil on my damp hair. I try not to use that much product because it actually makes me hair feels heavy and slimy if i use too much and it doesn't blow out that well. anyways, i part my hair like how i wear it so the products are distributed how it will be styled. put the detangler in first (even when im just trying to part my hair because I will not have hair falling out) and comb through that then i go in with the rest of the products and put my hair up in a claw clip for like 5 minutes. i like how my hair feels when it isnt dripping wet but still damp and wet so thats why i leave it in the clip. then i use a brush with air vents in it. you can literally get one for 11 dollars on amazon. and then i rough dry the hair but concentrate the air flow with the brush and constantly pick up pieces on the top layer with the brush. once the top layer is getting to dry but still a little wet, i go onto the next section below until i get the bottom sections. since the hair is still a little wet but mostly dry, this is where i finally finish all the hair off with the blowdrier and air vent brush. then at the end i use a large round brush because i like a loose blowout. and i constantly keep the blowdrier air on the round brush so none of the hair falls off. IMPORTANT, after you have pulled with tension on the hair with the round brush and air, roll the round brush up to your scalp and let it sit for a few seconds before twisting it down. then once the hair is out of the round brush flip it out of the way or roll it up and clip to keep going with the rest of the hair. DO NOT TOUCH OR RUN YOUR FINGERS THROUGH THE HAIR. let the curl set or just lay. this helps it cool down in the blowout shape you just created. ive made the mistake of touching it and trying to manipulate the hair to look a certain way but then i just killed the work i just put in. anyways with all of that, you are finished.
Kevin Murphy ever smooth (sometimes ever bounce) - great for blowing out my super fine wavy hair while keeping body and not adding grease
Moroccan Oil Frizz cream
On Blowout days I always shampoo 2x with Redken Volume Injection used for at least one of the washes. Nice hair mask (using Amika right now), good conditioner (either Redken Volume Injection or whatever I have left). Using a shower comb to dentangle at that time ( 2a 2b hair)
Then post shower spray in some leave in conditioner (Color Fanatic), gently brush/dentangle and plop for 5-10 minutes. Let it down, run Redken Big Blowout heat protection through and comb once more, then Blowout either with either blowdryer + round brush or a air/heated round brush if I'm shorter on time.
Once dry Finish with a dash of cream on the ends (little Amika or oloplex#6), and a touch of lighter oil on the ends if needed.. I think either Davine's or oploplex oil.
Sounds like you’re doing a Curly Girl routine, but then blowdrying your hair straight? Interesting—I have the same 2A/2B texture and have no interest in air-drying or encouraging my hair to have more curls, even in the face of all the Prose ads I keep seeing. 😹
Plopping meaning I just put it in a microfiber towel, Not scrunching or anything. No curl gel or mousse on those days. I got a whole separate curl routine but I don't really follow the curly girl method for wavy days.
I don't trust prose 🤣 heard too many shady things
I use the miracle repair to help, I use the whole line up, which is pricy, but it's worth it. I dye my hair every month, and my hair is still so soft and healthy because of this line
What brand?
I’ve been doing blowouts a lot more recently and I’m looking for something to help smooth my hair and just make it look better overall. I use the Redken One United spray and that’s all, it’s a nice product but I feel like I need a cream for my ends to help add smoothness. Any advice or recommendations are appreciated!
JVN Blowout cream & ColorWow Dreamcoat!
There’s an amika blowout spray that I looooovee! Any Amika blowout/volume product, really, is good for a blowout!
Dear beauty redditors,
What's your favorite product for styling your hair? I'm talking about something that completely locks out frizz and keeps your hair straight no matter the weather or the humidity. My perfect product was TIGI Catwalk's Blowout Balm, but unfortunately I think they have discontinued the product and it is not easy to find.
What are your holy grail products that do the job of producing an amazing blowout?
I like the color wow dream coat
I keep seeing this response to this question; I think I'm going to have to buy it.
What products do y’all use to keep your blowout from going frizzy and curly again?? Absolutely nothing seems to work for me. I don’t color treat my hair anymore but I live in a high humidity city (Houston). I’m getting married in September and need to find products that actually work!! Here’s everything I do/use:
Hair washing: I use Olaplex after every shampoo, thick hair mask each time I wash my hair (which is once a week), K18 once a month, LP Triple Bond Complex, clarify once a month since I only wash once a week
Products: I’ve tried so many. Pureology leave in, Ouidad thicker leave in, Ouidad gel, Kérastase L’Incroyable blow out balm, Kerastase/Oribe/Olaplex oil, IGK Spirulina line, ColorWow, Amike bombshell, Bumble & Bumble straightening line, Olaplex styling line, Oribe Straight Away, amongst so so so many more.
Technique: I section and blowdry my hair wet using the Dyson with a lot of tension until my hair is completely dry and hit it with a cold shot. I also pin the front parts or use hair rollers. Used to use the T3 and the Revlon brush. Coat my hair with pomade or anti-frizz spray afterwards. I even saturated my hair with the ColorWow Extra Strength this past weekend and used their new hairspray to hairspray the crap out of my hair. It still became curly again.
Would love some recommendations to pick up during the Sephora sale!
are you spraying color wow after blow drying?
I use Monday conditioner with silicone in it then raw shea butter and just got caught in the most humid drizzly weather in Florida (did not actually get my head wet) and my hair is somehow still smooth and shiny! I add a little more when Im flat ironing my hair a little before leaving the house and Im set. i do have thick, virgin 2c-3b hair though
We are in about 70-80% humidity here today while I was out. I did get some frizz but very little wave
Salon keratin treatment
Following!!
I have medium/fine virgin blonde hair and I exclusively use Oribe and Kérastase when I’m in my hometown that has next to no humidity and I love my hair, but when I go to Florida for the winter and use the same routine my hair is a mess. I tried everything under the sun and the BEST formula I’ve come up with is the L’Oréal “wonder water dream length” with the pink/orange bottle in place of conditioner, and then for blowout products the Drybar liquid glass miracle smoothing sealant and Drybar liquid glass smoothing blowout hair cream. I don’t find that the type of shampoo makes much of a difference so I use my normal clarifying one (bumble and bumble Sunday shampoo) and then anything on hand such as the oribe hair alchemy or signature shampoo, followed by the wonder water, and then Drybar products before blowdrying but I really coat each strand in the liquid sealant and use my Dyson airwrap. Good luck!! Not sure what hair type you have but this really worked for me :) Hair holds for days especially when I use velvet rollers for sleeping in the first 2 nights and then the sleepy tie for the rest of the week
hi everyone! i basically missed the part in middle school / high school where you learn how to kind of do your hair and makeup, mostly by not caring / not being super girly, partly because i cut my hair short. because of that, i am now realizing (in my mid 20s 🥴) i would like to look nicer day to day and have to learn these things haha.
i recently cut my hair and I have longer curtain bangs / more layers than i normally would, I love it but I want to be able to blow out / style at home.
i was thinking of buying the amika blow dryer brush because it seems easy enough? but was worried about committing to the purchase without knowing it would be good.
for more info, i have thin strands, not very frizzy and my hair is normally wavy / straight. I don’t wash it more than once a week but assumed I can just dampen my hair and then use?
more looking for tools than products :)
thx everyone!
I recently got a cut and the hairdresser used colorwows dream coat. It is amazing ! I would Defs get that. My hairs naturally curly and it helps smooth it out when blow drying
I recommend the dyson airwrap if it's in your budget, it's a LOT easier than blow dryer brushes and much healthier on the hair
or the shark hyper hair dryer
The Revlon One Step is a very similar product, and a bit less expensive. Honestly, check return policies, but you should be able to buy, use, and return anything like this til you find what you like :)
In my experience, the best blowouts with body are with a hair dryer, alligator clips, and a round brush, though you can still get really nice results with a blow dry brush.
You can definitely dampen your hair then use a blow drying brush, though it is important to use some type of heat protectant, or your hair will get fried.
What’s the difference between alligator clips and thinner clips or others? Is it just to partition the hair?
Alligator clips partition the hair, yes. I use these, which I really like. They're durable, and they don't snag or pull.
I have the dry bar single shot and really like it for my chest length hair and longer bangs.. although I got it on sale for like $90..
Hey! I love Oribe shampoos + conditioners but haven’t tried their styling stuff yet. I’ve got fine, slightly wavy, highlighted hair that doesn’t hold volume or curls well.
I use a Dyson Airwrap and I’m still figuring it out, so I’m looking for something that helps with volume + hold but doesn’t feel heavy or crunchy.
I’m considering: • Imperial Blowout Cream • Grandiose Mousse • Maximista Spray • Dry Texturizing Spray
Open to other recs too. Just want that bouncy, glossy blowout that actually lasts. Any faves or Airwrap tips welcome 💛
The mousse is my favorite. I use the maximista on my roots. The texture spray is for use on dry hair, so it wouldn’t help with the airwrap. I have stayed away from the imperial blowout because I read it’s heavy.
I was curious about the Imperial Blowout but heard the same thing about it being a tad too heavy. My fine hair gets weighed down so easily. Do you feel like the mousse gives lasting volume? I might just grab both minis to try out.
I honestly wasn’t impressed with any of the Oribe offerings. They’re not worth the money in any tangible way.
Fair enough! I’m always wondering if the price tag is just for the name. I do love the Hair Alchemy line (the scent is unreal), but I’m still kinda side-eyeing the cost vs. performance overall.
I use Maximista. I wouldn't say it makes hair feel crunchy, but it does feel drier and appears more matte. The Dry Texturizing Spray is also mattifying. If you prefer a finishing product that's more glossy, I'd go with the Thickening Spray or Apres Beach. I think all of them still benefit from hairspray after.
What do you use alongside Maximista? I’m definitely after volume and shine. I have blonde highlighted hair, and once the toner fades, it can start looking kinda flat and dull before my next appointment. I’ve been using the Hair Alchemy serum, it definitely makes my hair look healthier and a bit shinier. Thickening Spray honestly sounds like the answer to my problem… might have to snag it and see how it goes 😌
Tbh, I’ve mostly been using R&Co Badlands lately, but when I use Oribe, I do: Gold Lust Oil and Maximista before drying (I do think Maximista follows through on its promise of a quicker dry time!), then either of the three dry hair sprays mentioned afterward. Après Beach is really lovely if you’re going for shine!
Also, I use A LOT of Maximista, and all through the hair. I’m going for a more textured, rough look than shiny blowout, though.
The Kristin Ess line at Target has two INCREDIBLE Oribe dupes: The Dry Finish Working Texture spray dupes Oribe’s Dry Texture spray, and the Soft Shine Beach Wave spray (maybe only at Ulta?) dupes Apres Beach. I love both of the Oribe originals, but never buy them anymore. Start with these.
Thank you so much! That’s actually the styling line I was considering switching to.
For longevity I like the crème for styling in the black squeeze tube. The past 2 times I have went on a trip I do my hair with the air wrap the night before I leave, use the 1.0” curling barrel, and then it lasts 3-4 days into my trip (which is helpful because I was going internationally from the US and couldn’t take/use mine abroad). I have fine but a lot of hair, medium-long length, and completely straight when air dried. Of course I have natural fall out and by the 4th day the hair is more wavy than anything. Haven’t tried any of the others in your pic. I will say I don’t think it makes it glossy, because it almost adds a texture to it but it does make it last
I like that one a lot! Not sure how much shine it actually adds, but I use it in place of conditioner-just a pea sized amount, ears to ends, and it looks good.
I have the texturizing spray and it makes my hair get tangly. It almost makes it feel sticky. Super disappointing bc it smells good and was expensive so I really wanted to love it. My hair is very straight, silky, and fine for reference
How are you preserving your blowout for multiple days? I would love to know specific products, tools, and accessories you use in your routine!
Overnight Blowout rods. My hair is waist length and I use the grande size. I was using the Amazon knockoffs, but the real brand feels a lot better. They’re much grippier and the inside portion is more substantial and holds a bend. I cover the whole thing with a big satin cap. This method keeps good volume and curl.
Other nights I put my hair up in a loose bun then slip a satin cap over it, letting the bun fall inside the cap. This method keeps the curl but not the volume.
As far as products, it kind of varies. My nighttime routine is either Kerastase split ends serum followed by the Kerastase 8 hour overnight serum or Purology Color Fanatic leave in conditioner. The results are basically the same with either routine.
Do you have a link to what you use?
Sure!

I’ve only been using the split ends serum and 8 hour treatment for a couple of weeks so it is too soon to tell how much I like them. They seem pretty good so far, but I’m withholding judgement until I’ve used them longer.
The leave in conditioner is my holy grail. I’m on like my 5th bottle and just bought 2 of the value size ones a few days ago when they were 50% off. It detangles my hair sooooo well and is also a heat protectant. I use it right after I get out of the shower with wet hair and regularly on dry hair too. I love it.
Idk what kind of hair you have, but I have lots of fine, bleached hair and the thing that made the biggest difference is washing my bangs between blowouts.
I wrap my hair in a silk scarf to sleep. Then I brush with a boar bristle brush and throw some bedhead after party on it to reduce frizz and poof.
Could you explain how you wrap your hair in a scarf please? I have a hard time understanding this 😆
Watch a video on how to pineapple curls. It’s exactly that, but with straight hair.
I do a very loose floppy top knot (ponytail folded in half) with a spiral hair tie. It should flop around a bit when you move your head. It’s also very comfortable to sleep in. It gives amazing volume and I get tons of compliments. Everyone asks if I just had a blowout. I run my airwrap brush through my ends for a few seconds to refresh and smooth before I leave the house.
Add dry shampoo before you go to bed and it’s va va voom! I can go over a week with this method with dry shampoo, because I have very dry hair.
It’s easy and works so much better than the sleepy tie. The sleepy tie wrecks my blowout with creases and flattens my roots.
Been using Kerastase thermal leave ins (the damage one and nutritive one) and they keep mu blowout for few days.
Im looking for a good heat protectant for my blowouts that will add shine and lots of volume
I have not tried that but the Sexy Hair Root Boost is great.
Following to find out as well. I’ve been using the IGK Body Language Rice Water mist as my volume/heat protectant. I do like it a lot, but find myself still using a separate product on my Roots.
Other than blow drying your hair upside down, what gives you that lifted volume at your roots? Any Sephora products you’d recommend?
My Dyson Airwrap gives me insane blowouts
I get the best blowouts with mine as well!
Same and living proof thick hair cream
I dry my hair to damp and then once it's damp I use that oval attachment to lift at my roots until dry. Once it's dry I give it a cool shot and my hair stays put all day with nice smooth bounce.
The WOW xtra volume bombshell mouse is great.
Also, not Sephora, but they work wonders, the overnight blowout rods give me crazy volume.
I second the WOW Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer!
Also Color Wow’s Style on Steroids spray gives lots of volume and texture.
Does it make your roots greasy the next day? How long can you usually go between washes after using it?
Colour Wow Raise the Root spray. I’m seriously blown away and want to try the entire line.
Also a Shark Flexstyle (bought at ulta).
Honestly my shark flex style. Never had volume until I started using that thing with the oval brush attachment. I can't get the same with any other round brush, etc.
Color Wow Raise the Root Thicken and Lift Spray + Cricket Technique #400 2.5” Hairbrush.
Color Wow didn’t work for me either. Actually made my hair more limp which I didn’t know was possible
Best hair products for blowouts
Key Considerations for Blowout Hair Products:
Heat Protectant: Always start with a heat protectant spray or serum to shield your hair from heat damage. Look for products that can withstand high temperatures (up to 450°F).
Volumizing Mousse: A volumizing mousse can add body and lift to your hair, making it easier to achieve that salon-quality blowout. Look for lightweight formulas that won’t weigh your hair down.
Smoothing Cream or Serum: To combat frizz and add shine, use a smoothing cream or serum. These products help to create a sleek finish and can also enhance manageability.
Hair Spray: A flexible hold hairspray will help maintain your style without making your hair stiff or crunchy. Look for a product that offers humidity resistance for longer-lasting results.
Finishing Spray or Oil: For added shine and to tame flyaways, consider a finishing spray or hair oil. These products can give your blowout a polished look.
Recommendations:
Heat Protectant: GHD Heat Protect Spray - Lightweight and effective for protecting hair from heat damage.
Volumizing Mousse: Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse - Provides volume without stickiness and is great for all hair types.
Smoothing Cream: Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream - Excellent for controlling frizz and providing a smooth finish.
Hair Spray: L'Oréal Elnett Satin Hairspray - A classic choice for flexible hold that brushes out easily.
Finishing Oil: Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil - Adds shine and helps to reduce frizz while protecting hair.
Using these products in combination can help you achieve a beautiful, long-lasting blowout with minimal damage to your hair.
