How to Do a Professional Blowout at Home

Tools and Equipment

To achieve a salon-quality blowout at home, you'll need specific tools. A blow dryer with a nozzle is essential as it directs airflow precisely [2:1]. A round brush, either ceramic or boar bristle, is also crucial for manipulating hair effectively [2:1]. Additionally, consider using brush/dryer combos like the Revlon OneStep or Hot Tools One-Step Pro Blowout Styler, which have been praised for their ease of use and effectiveness [5:1][5:2].

Techniques

Start by rough drying your hair until it's about 70-80% dry [1:1][2:1]. Section your hair into small parts to make the process manageable [2:1]. Use the round brush to pull your hair up and away from your face while directing the blow dryer downwards to help lay the cuticle flat and reduce frizz [1:1][5:6]. Allow your hair to cool completely in a roll shape by using large hollow rollers or pin curls to achieve volume and curl [4:1].

Products

Using the right products can significantly enhance your blowout results. Begin with a primer or heat protectant to safeguard your hair against heat damage [2:1]. After styling, apply a smoothing serum or balm for added shine and smoothness [5:5]. Some users recommend Kenra moisturizing oil for a silky finish [5:7].

Additional Tips

For those with curly hair, achieving a smooth blowout might require extra steps. Consider watching YouTube tutorials for visual guidance [2:2][5:1]. If you're struggling with the back of your head, recruiting a friend to assist could be beneficial [3:1]. Lastly, don't rush the process; taking smaller sections and spending more time can lead to better results [5:6].

By following these guidelines and experimenting with different techniques and products, you can achieve a professional-looking blowout at home.

How do yall give yourself salon-quality blowouts at home? When I blow dry my hair it always looks soooo frizzy. What products/tools/techniques should I be using?

garlicgal1234 · 3 months ago

you’ll need a big round brush & some clips. rough dry your hair to about 70% & then fully dry in small sections with your round brush, pulling your hair up and away from your face. never use too high of pressure or you will create frizz. i like to use a hair oil at the very end but thats more for shine vs frizz. also always use a heat protectant as well to prevent heat damage :)

Thanks! When you say too high of pressure, do you mean from the blow dryer?

yes exactly! the fan/power/air-pressure, i never know what to call it😂

Is it possible to get a salon blowout at home and if so how

I have curly hair and got my hair blown out at the salon today for the second time and it feels so good. I know there’s probably a reason you pay someone to do it for you but would it be possible to do it at home to look as good? And if so what tools do I need/videos should I watch? Thanks!

Go to YouTube and search for blowout tutorial. People usually put the products used in the description box.

The Dyson air wrap is fabulous. If you don’t want to spend that much, you can get the revlon hairbrush dryer. My friend uses the revlon brush and gets great results. I prefer the Dyson because it’s less damaging and I have super thick hair. A blowout lasts me 10 days

The Blow Dry Bar double shot brush-dryer works to achieve this effect. Look up some YouTube videos about how to use it first.

Yes, this. I just bought this and it is fabulous. The Revlon version is good, as well. Makes a huge difference and so easy to use.

You need a blow dryer with a nozzle. The nozzle is very important because it directs the air flow. You need a round brush either a ceramic or a boar bristles. I personally like the ceramic ones better bc they are easier to manipulate. Step 1) use a primer or heat protectant. Make sure you saturate the product all over your hair. 2) rough dry you hair before sectioning. You should take 80% of the moisture before you start actually to blow dry. 3) section your hair. If you’re a beginner use small sections to make your life easier. 4) grab the brush and pull your hair. If your looking for volume, pull your hair with the brush upwards and lock the brush with you thumb. Tension is very important! Before using the brush start with the roots and direct the air flow downwards close to the hair but without touching it a few times. Pass the air over an under the hair from roots to mid shaft. 5) use the brush, pass you hair over the brush and lock by wrapping your hair around the brush one time and always pointing downwards to seal the cuticle, otherwise, is gonna come out frizzy. Make sure roots and mid shaft are dry before proceeding to ends. Keep rolling the brush on the ends until they look polished. Pro tip: once the ends are dry. Wrap your hair from ends to roots with the brush and shoot with cool air. Wait a few seconds and unwrap it for some soft waves.

I don’t have any videos in hand, but there are plenty on YouTube. it’s easier to get it done in the salon, but with practice you can master it and make it look just as good as a salon blow out. Talking from experience, practice makes perfect

Has anyone done a Brazilian Blowout at home? Need reassurance tips! Thanks!

Posted by AioliOld1667 · in r/DIYBeauty · 8 months ago

I’m seriously considering doing a Brazilian Blowout at home using the real products from a stylist. I’ve got everything I need: the full kit, an application brush, a great hairdryer, a flat iron that goes up to 450°F, and a boar bristle brush. I’ve had professional Brazilian Blowouts done 2–3 times a year, and I’ve spent countless hours watching videos of pros doing it. I’ve also researched every tip and trick out there to make sure I get it right.

That said, I’m terrified to do it myself. I really want it to turn out as smooth and perfect as when I get it done professionally. I’ve even bought protective glasses and a good mask to stay safe during the process.

Has anyone here successfully done the BB brand Brazilian Blowout at home? And been REALLY happy with the results? I would love to hear about your experiences and any tips you have to make the process go smoothly. Please reassure me that I can pull this off!

I’m a current cosmetology student. My understanding is that to achieve a lasting blowout with this kind of volume and large curl, you will need to allow your hair to COMPLETELY cool in a roll shape. There are a few ways to achieve this: •you can get large hollow rollers to pin in place directly after drying each section •you can do a sort of large pin curl(outward for root volume) •you can buy multiple round brushes to leave a few in place as you move on to the next sections. (A cool shot with the blow dryer will speed this up)

If you don’t pin them up, a cool shot with the dryer on each section before dropping is also helpful. Also start with a flexible volume and hold styling product in your damp hair, but you don’t have a recommendation because I’m not versed in products yet. Good luck! This style is so cute and popular but you don’t see a lot of people rocking it daily because it’s is labor intensive and time consuming. Maybe one of those new blowout brush/dryer options would be helpful too.

Would it be better to just go get it done? I used to go to my local beauty college and let the students do it and the results were OK. .But last time I got it done professionally, jt cost me over a hundred dollars

YES! Tell them you want it to cool rolled or pinned. My school only charges 10$ for a blowout and I wonder why more people don’t take advantage of a weekly blowout. The girls aren’t fast so just make sure you have the time hehe

Hi! Sorry for the bad English.
I do this hairstyle in a very simple way at home. You can wear it while you sleep and you wake up with your hair voluminous, full and beautiful!

I get 3 big socks.
I part my hair in threes, (front, and sides)

You grab the front part first (a tip, get plenty of hair in the front) and then you wrap the sock up with it. When you get to the root, you make a knot with your own sock. (and do the rest of the process with the sides, but in the front you will roll it out and the sides, inwards)

If you don't understand, watch the video

We're going to start with sulfate free shampoo and conditioner, then your actual blowout stuff.

To be perfectly honest I cheat a bit. Years ago, back in high school, friends and I were having a sleepover and the friend whose house it was grandmother walked past the bathroom and saw us all, arms going everywhere with a blow dryer and did the usual "what on earth are you girls doing?" We showed her the pictures of what we were trying to do and she clicked her tongue, walked away and came back with rollers big enough to wear as armbands and said something like "girls, if you want lift I can give ya lift" and then she helped my friend put them in, laughing that she had those rollers since her generation had a "big hair" phase, and then her daughter used them for her big hair phase and wouldn't you know it, next generation is gonna use them too!

  1. are you using the same products

  2. another thing is angle. The angle they have being able to really hold above your head makes a big difference. That angle ensures it is always being downwards and the help get the cuticle lay flat

  3. Are you using a nozzle? And what type of brush. Not all brushes are created equal.

  4. Don’t be afraid to take smaller sections and it take longer to do your hair. It takes me about 40 minutes to get a decent blow out at home. Some people will say they can do their in 15-20. However i have super thick hair and have to do super small thin sections. My theory is if I go get a blowout it takes them about 45 minutes to wash, blow dry, and flat iron my hair. So if it takes me about 40 to blow dry it I’m not too far behind.

Punk_ass_sissy · OP · 4 years ago

I've tried the same products without the same results. But I am very much opened to any suggestions you have!

I do believe you're right about the angle making a huge difference. I've tried TONS of brushes and dryers (this has been a long standing experiment) The one I found the most success is with a rotating hot brush from revlon.

Thank you ao much :)

Help! How do I get a salon blowout at home?

The picture above is right after I left the salon. I absolutely loved it! However I am not so good at hair. I was wondering how I get my hair to not be so poofy. Every time I try to recreate this, my hair gets so frizzy and poofy and it just does not look right. Is there a technique I can do?

When I was at the salon she blowed it out with a hair dryer and roller brush and the curled it with a curling iron, but whenever I do it is poofy and frizzy. Any advice would be great! Thank you!

You can recreate this look by curling with a 1-1.5” flat iron. For each curl, alternate the direction of the turns to give it more of a natural look. It won’t look exactly the same as this but it’ll be close enough once you practice. Round brushing on yourself can be hard (and for some less coordinated, impossible lol). It’ll take practice at first but you’ll probably find it easier than round brushing blow drying on yourself.

What are your tricks for a good blowout?

Posted by WindingRoad9 · in r/beauty · 5 years ago

I consider myself pretty good at doing my hair. I have semi fine hair just past my shoulders. I typically do loose curls away from my face with a curling iron, but in my opinion my hair looks it's absolute BEST after a good blowout with round brush at the salon.

I have never fully mastered the blowout with a round brush, but believe I can with the right tools and practice. Anyone have tips, blow dryer/brush recommendations, or insight into any styling products to give you a great blowout? Thanks in advance!

Two things-

Keep tension on the hair as you dry it.

Angle the dryer toward the ends of your hair.

Doing this creates a smooth hair cuticle and the look you're going for.

It’s how I do mine with that appliance too. Separate my hair into 4 sections. However my hair has a curl/wave to it so it takes a little longer because I’m trying to take that kink out as I’m smoothing it. Did you use anything special in your hair? I usually use a leave in spray conditioner so I can get a brush through it.

The round brush hair dryer combo isn’t the best for getting tour roots equally dry so I’d either start with a regular blow dryer at the roots or allow time to air dry. I wait until my hair is 75-80% dry and then it takes me like 7 minutes. It makes my hair so silky feeling

First blow out in over 10 years 🥲

Posted by Much-Mushroom-9450 · in r/Naturalhair · 1 month ago

I’ve been natural for about 15 years but haven’t put any direct heat on my hair for the past 10 years. I found products I liked and always stretched my hair in braids and then just let it dry in them before taking them down and styling or wearing my hair out. I’m not a wash-and-go girly by any means, my hair is pretty much always stretched.

Recently I wanted to try blowing it out so that I could do less detangling during the week. I’m sooo happy with the results!

I did my clarifying shampoo, hair mask, conditioner, leave in, and heat protector spray, sectioned my hair and then after I blew each section out I braided it up— then trimmed my ends.

It’s VERY clear that my left side grows longer than my right lol. I trimmed a bit more to compensate but nothing fancy just chopped then puffy ends of the braided sections off. It’s still kind of uneven, so learning how to trim properly might be next. 😅

Anyways— I went to bed like that with the sections braided (with a silk bonnet) cause it was late and this is my hair the next day. Last two slides are how I styled it for running some errands.

My plan is to put a little bit of serum in it and sleep with two braids and then use a styling cream to do a Bantu knot out for an event this weekend.

Overall I’m really happy to see this side of my hair again after so long. I see why people go this route! So soft and easy to style like this.

Would love to your face heat protector! I’m using Chi 44 after seeing it in a few YouTube videos but the bottle is really small so I can try something new when it runs out.

How to do a professional blowout at home

Here are some key considerations for achieving a professional blowout at home:

  1. Start with Clean, Damp Hair:

    • Wash your hair with a good quality shampoo and conditioner. Use a leave-in conditioner or heat protectant to prepare your hair for styling.
  2. Use the Right Tools:

    • Invest in a high-quality blow dryer with a nozzle attachment for focused airflow.
    • A round brush (medium to large size, depending on your hair length) is essential for creating volume and smoothness.
    • Clips to section your hair will help manage the process.
  3. Section Your Hair:

    • Divide your hair into manageable sections (usually 4-6). Clip the top sections away while you work on the bottom layers first.
  4. Blow Drying Technique:

    • Start with the bottom sections. Take a small subsection of hair, place the round brush underneath, and direct the blow dryer down the hair shaft.
    • Roll the brush towards your scalp while pulling the hair taut. This helps create volume and smoothness.
    • Keep the blow dryer moving to avoid overheating any one section.
  5. Cool Down:

    • Once a section is dry, switch to the cool setting on your blow dryer and blast the section for a few seconds. This helps set the style and adds shine.
  6. Finishing Touches:

    • After all sections are dry, run your fingers through your hair to break up any stiffness.
    • Use a light hairspray or finishing serum for hold and shine.

Recommendation: Practice makes perfect! Don’t rush the process; take your time to ensure each section is properly dried and styled. Watching tutorial videos can also provide visual guidance and tips tailored to your hair type.
