What Redditors are Saying

Best Horror Games Like Subnautica

TL;DR

  • SOMA: Deep-water horror with existential themes [2:1], [5:1]
  • The Forest: Survival horror with intense atmosphere [1:4]
  • Outer Wilds: Exploration and mystery in space [2:6], [3:2]

SOMA

SOMA is frequently recommended for fans of Subnautica looking for a more intense horror experience. Set in an abandoned underwater research facility, it offers a chilling atmosphere with elements of existential horror. Players have praised its ability to evoke feelings of loneliness and dread, making it a fitting choice for those who enjoyed the eerie aspects of Subnautica [2:2], [5:1]. The game focuses heavily on narrative and atmosphere, rather than combat, which aligns well with the exploration-driven nature of Subnautica.

The Forest

For players seeking a survival horror experience similar to Subnautica, The Forest is highly recommended. It combines base-building mechanics with a gripping storyline and terrifying encounters, particularly when exploring caves filled with cannibals [1:4], [3:4]. While it's more gory than Subnautica, it provides a rewarding challenge and a sense of progression as you become proficient at surviving in its hostile environment.

Outer Wilds

Outer Wilds offers a unique blend of exploration and mystery, akin to Subnautica, but set in space. It emphasizes discovery and problem-solving, with a story that unfolds through exploration of various planets [2:4], [3:2]. Although it lacks the crafting and survival elements of Subnautica, it shares the same spirit of uncovering secrets in a vast and dangerous world.

Other Recommendations

Additional games worth considering include No Man's Sky, which offers expansive exploration and survival mechanics [3:3], [3:12], and Stranded Deep, which provides a survival experience in an ocean setting [2:12]. For those interested in a different type of horror, Silent Hill 2 Remake and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice offer desolate environments and psychological elements [5:2]. Each of these games delivers a unique twist on the themes present in Subnautica, catering to various preferences in horror and exploration.

ORIGINAL POST

I've played and finished subnautica dozens of times and I basically explored all I could and built all I wanted. It's one of my all time favourite games ,absolutely love it.

But after all the playthroughs I feel as if it's kinda loosing its charm, even with reshade and graphics mods exploring isn't scary and leviathans dont even get a reaction out of me :(

So now I'm wondering if there's maybe some games that are similair to Subnautica? Thanks

it’s not the same but you could try raft?

Raft seems so unpolished and rough compared to Subnautica.
Bought Raft last week, ended up playing Subnautica instead

Ziingerr · 2 years ago

Yeah, subnautica definitely is much prettier and atmospheric. I did enjoy subnautica more but raft has its own charm, especially at the islands & locations (as opposed to just floating.) Funnily enough I’ve experienced more glitches w/ subnautica

If you haven’t gotten that far, I would give it another shot! It can be a bit repetitive and tedious- especially at the beginning. But it can be a lot of fun. And it’s lots more fun if you play with a friend and can help eliminate some of the boring aspects

The Long Dark is my favorite game in this genre (Subnautica is #2). It will be a bit of a shift though, since there is less focus on base building and more focus on survival

The forest is an incredible game. The first play through will be much more intentionally horrifying than subnautica, but one of the best survival story lines I've ever seen in a game. Super rewarding when you start to get proficient, great base building and consistent challenge

"if you don't mind gore"... I had to abandon it a few hours in. When I went into the cave I realised it wasn't for me. And I figured it wouldn't get any less grim.

Same, wish they had the same game but with wolves and bears instead of flesh nightmares. Would be a beautiful game.

I know you can play on peaceful, but then it's just boring.

If you haven't played below zero, it's better than you might think from reading this sub. It refreshes the horror because you have no idea where any of the things trying to eat you are and there are more of them. I've never been attacked by a reaper (unintentionally) because I am very careful about them, but chelicerates managed to sneak up on me a few times. Even had one movie like moment where I barely managed to retreat into a small ravine as it swam at me. BZ's story is also pretty cool.

I did not like the long dark at all. No base building, wonky throwing, no bow/ firearms till after 20+ hours in, all activities cost hunger/ thirst so your just playing an eating sim.

I beat the game a second time a few months ago. It didn't feel the same. I wasn't shitting my pants. I knew exactly what to do and what to be scared. It didn't feel as magical. I haven't found a game like it since. I've played BZ and 100%ed it but it's not on game pass anymore. Any recommendations?

Came in to suggest the exact same game. Even the DLC was great, could have even been it’s own game. Outer Wilds will always be a top 3 game to me, and quite honestly I may even have it tied with Subnautica, can’t decide what’s better.

First thing I thought of. Just for people curious: it's like early early access Subnautica. It's not polished, it's ugly, but it's perfectly playable.

It's got similarish exploration to Subnautica, just land based, buy mechanically kinda sucks. Instead of unlocking vehicles and new gear to go deeper, you just get bigger O2 tanks to walk further. So it's more shallow, but also trivialized by being able to construct simple rooms everywhere and never even need to worry about oxygen. Sense of progression is based around rarer materials being further from your spawn point and unlocking new tech as you continue terraforming.

Gotta say, seeing the world literally change around you as you hit milestones is cool as hell.

12 upvotes on reddit
Send_Me_Huge_Tits · 2 years ago

>It's not polished, it's ugly

When did you play it last? It isn't "finished" but it certainly isn't ugly or lacking polish.

I liked it because it removed my one complaint about subnautica, which is that diving for minerals is a pain when you are so restricted by oxygen. Gauging how much time you have left is easer on land and so is the navigation.

There's a few things that can be a jumpscare. Other stuff is just creepy. Oh and there's a couple of surprises underwater too.

One thing in particular will definitely make you jump the first time you see it, plus you can't scan it or kill it... but luckily it's not actually as dangerous as it looks.

Oh right, you'll eventually have to visit some abandoned bases, the ones infested with goo... Try and mine the eggs around the base and let us know.

Lots of progression in NMS. Probably the same amount of story content, which tbf isn't much for either game. NMS is a lot more repetitive imo and I don't think the story was as good as subnautica. But you can usually find it for very cheap and its definitely worth trying.

The most accurate comparison I can give: I've put a lot more hours into NMS, but I've enjoyed the hours a lot more in Subnautica.

The story aspect is similar; if only on a thematic and surface level. They're both games about exploring the theme of exploration through dangerous environments. They mainly differ in that Subnautica approaches it as a survival/crafting game whereas Outer Wilds approaches it as traditional adventure game mixed with metroidvania elements They're definitely more similar than might first seem.

They're both fairly open ended exploring games where you piece together bits of the story by finding logs from a mysteriously missing alien society. The Outer Wilds doesn't have any base building or material collection though, it's all about exploring the world(s)

It would be hard for me to explain, but it is subjectively similar in my view, having played it immediately after Subnautica and loving both enough to include them in my all-time list, as well as being some of the most audience-engaging games I've ever streamed.

Both games fundamentally revolve around certain story/setting/mechanics similarities, just different definitions, and means, of progression.

And both just hit that same spot for me, personally!

Silent Hill 2 Remake has a very desolate and eerie feeling from start to finish and is themed around what you are describing. SH2 in particularly is famous for giving people a feeling of hopelessness, lonesomeness and dread. Some combat and puzzles.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is a good contender too. It is about coping with loss and has gameplay elements inspired by psychosis and skizofrenia. Brilliant game and extremely beautiful. Also very desolate and gives you that feeling of a bottomless emptiness. Some combat and puzzles.

SOMA. Pretty much exactly what you describe, though with a slightly different take. Amazing game. No combat. Some puzzles.

These games all feature vast, dark, empty spaces. Some may or may not include the ocean. But no spoilers. Enjoy!

I need to say my piece for Silent Hill 2.

Great game, I haven't beaten it yet but the remake gave me an oppurtunity to play a classic, arguably iconic, horror game that I've heard about for years. I truly felt alone in that game, but I was captivated by the game's graphics. Exploring this strange empty town on my own was weirdly melancholic. It didn't feel like RE4, like I was a soldier with no backup. It truly captured this feeling that the protagonist is alone, no one to care for him or offer any comfort at all. I would highly recommend this game, OP.

Yep, gonna throw a vote in for SOMA also. Sounds like exactly what you are looking for. It makes you feel very, VERY alone.

You may also enjoy What Remains of Edith Finch. It's not so much a cosmic loneliness, but exploring the house by yourself is depressingly lonesome. It's more of an indie game and doesn't have combat, but it still hits hard if you're into it.

OH! One more I just remembered: Outer Wilds. It's not a horror game really, and the gameplay is... divisive. But if you get into it, you will absolutely be rewarded with a heart-wrenching tale of what it means to exist in the vast emptiness of space and time -- not just as an individual but as an entire society. You are also, literally, spending most of your time alone in space. It's... humbling, to say the least. One of my all-time favorites.

Any games similar to Subnautica/Prey(2017)?

Posted by xtr44 · in r/pcgaming · 2 years ago

What I like about these games is exploring abandoned/almost abandoned places and discovering stories or secrets of these places and people clue by clue.

I finished Prey and am currently playing through Subnautica. I am sure I played more of similar games, but these two come first to my mind.

I am open to other genres, games with different gameplay but including elements described in the first paragraph. I'll take games that are just similar to these in any way as well, so feel free to comment.

So any suggestions? :D

Prey falls into a genre now called 'Immersive Sims' so, check out games in that category. While people are recommending Outer Wilds, I'd disagree that its similar to what you're looking for.

I'd recommend:

  • BioShock
  • Metro2033
  • System Shock 2
  • The Long Dark
  • STALKER
  • The Forest
  • Fallout series
  • Deus Ex
  • Dishonored (same developers as Prey)

Subnautica 2 unfortunately falls flat compared to the first one IMO

It isn't when you put that paragraph in the context of OP playing Prey and Subnautica, both of which feature many game mechanics that Outer Wild does not.

I'm not saying Outer Wild is a bad game, just that its not a close match to what OP is currently playing and enjoying.

I'm not saying Outer Wilds isn't a great game but I personally don't think it contains many elements of what made Prey great.

Control is much more like Prey. Both are quite rewarding for exploring and take place in one area. They also both tell multiple stories in the form of documents/logs/e-mails that add to the immersion of the world they're building.

And for Subnautica, I would say The Forest is a direct comparison. Both let you explore and build whatever you want, but if you come across enough interesting caves you'll start noticing there's a storyline building.

Man, scary games never affected me, but I swear Subnautica manages to bring out such a raw, primal terror in me. I don't know what's up with that, I couldn't bring myself to finish it, I just couldn't push past the fear and anxiety of knowing something is there and will come for you, but you just don't know when it will happen, the helplessness of that moment

And that they did it without the initial intention to make a terror game is brilliant! Because of that, they did not focus on any horror elements at all. It’s all in the mission to improve the atmosphere, make it more immersive. Letting the ocean do its effect by its own.

I'll preface by saying I absolutely adore Subnautica. I will never uninstall that game from my PC, I've finished it 7 times, I'm still playing it. I cannot wait for the sequel.

Subnautica: Below Zero does exist.

I'm going to be honest with you. I didn't like it. The map is smaller, there's no ultra fast fins, there's no seamoth, there's no cyclops. And the reason there's no ultra fast fins or seamoth or cyclops is because the underwater map is around half the size of Subnautica I'm guessing.

The protagonist is a "scientist" who acts like a teenager, she is voiced and extremely annoying. However there is a companion who is interesting and kind of saves it. It's just unfortunate our character fails to interact in a meaningful and intelligent way with it.

The story is a mess.

There's more emphasis on the overworld in this game, as we all know from the original, running on the overworld feels janky. Unless the controls have been patched DO NOT USE the Snowfox (snow traversal vehicle), the controls are an absolute goddamn travesty. Just build a Prawn suit and use it to get around.

It doesn't feel like you're trying to survive like the first game, it feels like you're in a theme park specifically designed for you to explore.

However if you can get over that, there are some positives here. The biomes are beautiful, there's new creatures and the ending was worth putting up with the rest of the game.

Spot on. It's like they didn't understand what made the original one great. It's the immersion, the feeling of loneliness and isolation and being lost. They failed on all fronts with the sequel. The protagonist is absolutely out of place, some anti science teenager that acts like she's bored... But she's supposed to be a scientist of sorts? Every single time she speaks I'm cringing internally. Just shut up.

The map is smaller. There is a map. Way too much walking, and it's never cool - just lost in a snowstorm. In the original it was s bit wonky but it was really cool with all the plants, and for how unexpected the isles were.

The sound quality also dropped. Story is largely nonsense. Why go alone to the planet, without any tools?Doesn't make sense.

Very few "holy shit" moments, unlike the original one. Worms straight up ripped off from Dune. They embraced cartoonish looks over realism. I could go on.

I'm not convinced they know what they are doing. Maybe some key people left the company since the original, maybe they just got lucky and don't know how to recreate it.

It's not spooky either -- maybe it wasn't their intention with the first game (I find that hard to believe given the design of some Subnautica 1 biomes) but SN1 was really scary and made the exploration unforgettable. In Below Zero, they artificially illuminate all the "dark" areas like caves as well as provide you oxygen plants everywhere you go, the incessant dialogue also completely deflates all the tension or eureka moments in exploration.

It was really the opposite of what I expected out of a side-story or sequel. It's not a bad game, but I guess I just wanted bigger, better, deeper, maybe scarier Subnautica.

BZ is not Subnautica 2. It is more like an expansion/spin off of the first game. I think they know what made the first one great and will do it again with the true sequel.

The biomes are what saved Below Zero for me. It may be a much smaller map overall, but the sheer diversity and complexity that they managed to pack in to it is really impressive. It's a pretty dense experience and the sheer verticality of its design is something else. I may be in the minority, but I was also totally fine with their decision to exclude the Seamoth and Cyclops. I thought the Sea Truck was pretty interesting. It's like this combination of the Seamoth and Cyclops, and you can kind of switch between either use-case since it's a modular design that lets you detach segments like train cars. It has been a while since I played the game, but I think the only downside to the Sea Truck was that its maximum achievable depth wasn't as high, so you were required to switch to the Prawn Suit for the more extreme depths. It was also a bit unwieldy after attaching a handful of cars to it, but then again the Cyclops in the first game was an absolute behemoth as well. I personally think they achieved a more balanced experience with the vehicles in Below Zero, but that's just me.

I agree that the story was rather forgettable. I thought it was cool how the main character is voiced by Kimberly Brooks, who voiced Ashley Williams in Mass Effect. Her voice was like immediately recognizable. But I think there was a misstep with the writing and how the story is presented. But I suppose it being the studio's first attempt at something fully voice acted with characters interacting with one another is why. I think I just preferred the approach they took with the first game where you truly are alone and have to piece together the mystery of what happened to the Aurora, and the answers to that mystery are they key to you escaping from the planet. For some reason, I have always liked games that instill that sense of loneliness.

I'm sure it was a learning experience for them, so I'm interested to see what they do next. Hopefully they plan to make another Subnautica game at some point. Moonbreaker looks neat, but I'm not really in to turn-based strategy games sadly.

A sequel is planned and in development. Although I believe it's very early days. However the studio was looking to take a break from Subnautica after Below Zero. Then they were sold to Krafton and now they're making a sequel.

So I can't imagine they're getting the break they were looking for. Although I can't say it wasn't an internal decision as I wouldn't know.

I wouldn't recommend trying to find games with similar mechanics and instead find games that evoke the same emotions. For me, the closest games that created a sense of wonder/terror/adventure in an unfamiliar world with environmental storytelling have been... Outer Wilds, Hollow Knight, Super Metroid, and Dark Souls.

I agree completely. Outer Wilds totally gave me the same sense of wonder as when I was discovering something really cool in subnautica. The other games you mention are my all time favourites, it's so spooky!

Oh OK you already tried it. I was so disappointed with it. I really tried to like it.

I ended up getting sick of the ridiculous amount of hostile creatures and just drove around ramming them all with the Seatruck. They were just in the way, I believe they reduced their numbers in a patch, but it was just excessive and there's no way 50 predators could survive in that space. Everyone was discussing ways to get around leviathans, and the solution really is to just run them over with your truck.

I do appreciate they patched the new base parts from BZ into Subnautica in the Living Large Update, which they absolutely didn't have to do.

Best Horror Games?

Horror game fans—drop the ones that genuinely GOT you. I want something immersive, doesn’t have to be AAA. Bonus points if it leans more psychological than just jump-scare spam.

Played: Outlast, Visage, Layers of Fear Considering: Madison, The Mortuary Assistant, Signalis

Any recs or hidden gems?

Alien isolation for a game that will make you on edge. Also give both the Alan Wake games a try. They’re not scary but psychological

Playing Alien Isolation in VR was both the only time that I've experienced fear due to a video game and the only time I've experienced basically, "final exam" stress during a video game. I actually put it down because of the latter.

Seconded Alien Isolation. Fantastic exercise in horror. Some levels drag a bit, but regardless it belongs in the panoply of the greatest survival horror games.

I’d put Resident Evil 7 there and Silent Hill 2 as well.

You’ll probably get this recommendation a lot. But the Silent Hill 2 Remake was amazing. I have never been scared or frightened playing a game until I touched that. Took me quite some time to beat it because i would get overstimulated playing it and had to take breaks doing so. You’ll enjoy it a lot I think.

Another one i enjoyed was Hellblade Senuas Sacrifice. This is on the more psychological side of horror.

Play these with headphones on and in the dark and you’ll be immersed completely.

Been playing since the 90s. Silent Hill 2 Remake is easily the scariest horror game I played. I’m not big on gore, more on atmosphere, and SH2 did an awesome job with that.

Big fan of Clock Tower (a lot of tension) on PS1 and The Thing on Xbox/PS2.

Doom 3 is pretty scary, scarier than any other entry in the series.

Resident Evil is great, but never found it scary outside of the RE2 remake, RE4, RE7, and RE8. RE1 and RE2 are personally my favorites, RE1 remake is likely the best way to enjoy it now but RE2 and RE2 remake are both great still. The RE Outbreak games are a ton of fun too, but less so now that there's no online.

Silent Hill is amazing. SH1 and especially SH2. Heard great things about the SH2 remake.

Parasite Eve is amazing, Parasite Eve 2 less so, and Parasite Eve "3" even less so (went from a narrative driven horror action RPG to a more action focused game that a major marketing focus was the main characters sexy outfits and destructible clothing...).

The Suferring games are great, aside from a few jump scares it's more action-y with a horror and gore theme.

Only ever played the first couple Fatal Frame games, but they're very spooky.

Evil Dead: Regeneration is not scary, but if you're an Evil Dead fan you'll love it. Similarly, the Buffy games on PS2/Xbox are great fun with horror elements.

If you go back further there's a lot of interesting PC horror games, but primarily point and click type games. I'm a little more retro leaning generallybut there's a lot of great more modern PC horror games too that'll pop up on any "top 20 PC horror games" list you'll find on Google with stuff like Outlast, Soma, Amnesia, Dredge, Sons of the Forest, Mouthwashing, Phasmophobia, or Scorn.

I just want to hop on here and advocate for the SH2 remake. I love the original, but honestly the remake does a lot of things better. It is easily the most dread, and the most intense atmosphere I've ever experienced in a game.

Hmm, there’s SOMA, Reveil, Shift 87, the Fears to Fathom games, Anemoiapolis, Killer Frequency off the top of my head. I’ve played a few other games that are more surreal and creepy but I’m not sure I’d call them horror (namely Off Peak and The Norwood Suite)

Surreal and creepy is fine!

I'm not looking for something like Dark Souls which just has a darker setting, but it doesn't have to pass some horror purity test like Silent Hill or whatever.

It's a grey area I guess lol.

Putting this here in case it violates format rules

I understand how that mechanic amps up the game by making you conserve resources and not just blasting away every alien or ghost or whatever, but it just stresses me out rather than adds to the fear.

Any suggestions for games that run on the Deck (or are on PS5 if not, I guess) that don't do that?

Examples of games that I mean: Resident Evil, Dead Space, Days Gone (at least the little I played). Your ammo is so scarce and it's so easy to lose health and die. Combine that with assholes that can't be killed (Mr X, The Hunter, etc.) and it's not fun and scary to me, just annoying and stressful.

On the other hand, something like Subnautica was PERFECT because it was pretty easy to farm whatever resources you needed, and you're not meant to kill the vast majority of enemies. Prey (2017) was another good one, because you end up with a ton of ammo, upgrades, and various powers by the end.

Great game but if the problem with Mr x is that he could not be killed, the Alien might be very frustrating. It's basically a Mr x on steroids. You ain't fighting it, you're hiding and sneaking past it. If it see you, your running and hoping for the best.

Also I don’t believe senuas sacrifice had resource mechanics, but I haven’t beat that one, horror gaming is mainly what I do on my deck, I happen to love resident evil and those games like it so I would really encourage you to give it another try even on an easy difficulty, the last of us part 1 and two work well on deck if you do decide to jump into a game like that.

Outlast 1 and two work very well on deck and are terrifying, no real resource management except battery’s and you only run out of those if you are seriously irresponsible with them, and on easy mode it’s hard to run out of them. Sorry about the million comments in literally going through my steam library

I made it a little bit further past his first appearance, but yes, it kind of ruined the game for me. I didn't like having to say "f it" and haul ass to a safe area whenever he started chasing me. I know you can listen for him and hear his footsteps, but that didn't really help.

I get the appeal, but yeah, just not for me.

I wouldn't put Days Gone in the same bucket as Resident Evil. Resident Evil has scarcity of resources and inventory slots so it's an inventory management game as much as it is a horror game. In Days Gone, you only have the resource scarcity at the start. Once you get about 10ish hours in, maybe sooner, and do the camp missions, you get more money to trade for stuff. I never had an issue with resources in that game after the start.

Cool! I'll check out RE4.

I did play Dead Space Remake on the easiest setting lol. It wasn't ideal because there was zero challenge to it, but everything about the game was awesome so I didn't mind too much.

AI Answer

🤖

best horror games like subnautica

Key Considerations for Horror Games Similar to Subnautica:

  1. Atmospheric Exploration: Look for games that emphasize exploration in eerie, immersive environments, similar to the underwater world of Subnautica.

  2. Survival Mechanics: Games that incorporate survival elements, such as resource management, crafting, and health systems, can enhance the tension and engagement.

  3. Narrative Depth: A strong story or lore can add to the horror experience, making the exploration feel more meaningful and unsettling.

  4. Unique Settings: Consider games that take place in unusual or alien environments, which can evoke a sense of isolation and fear.

  5. Creature Encounters: Games that feature terrifying creatures or threats that players must avoid or confront can heighten the horror experience.

Recommendations:

  1. The Forest: This survival horror game places you in a mysterious forest after a plane crash. You must gather resources, build shelter, and fend off cannibalistic mutants while uncovering the story behind the island.

  2. Green Hell: Set in the Amazon rainforest, this game combines survival mechanics with psychological horror. Players must manage their health and sanity while facing the dangers of the jungle.

  3. SOMA: From the creators of Amnesia, SOMA is a sci-fi horror game set in an underwater research facility. It features a deep narrative and existential themes, along with terrifying encounters.

  4. Subnautica: Below Zero: If you enjoyed the original Subnautica, its sequel offers a new story and environment to explore, with additional horror elements and challenges.

  5. Stranded Deep: This survival game places you on a deserted island after a plane crash. While it leans more towards survival than horror, the isolation and potential threats can create a tense atmosphere.

These games should provide a mix of exploration, survival, and horror elements that fans of Subnautica will likely enjoy!
