TL;DR Subnautica: Below Zero is not a traditional horror game, but it does have elements that can be unsettling, especially for those with thalassophobia (fear of deep water). The game focuses more on exploration and discovery rather than intentional scares.
Atmosphere and Fear Elements
Subnautica: Below Zero creates an atmosphere of isolation and vulnerability, which can be anxiety-inducing for some players [1:4]. The fear in the game is often described as "terror" rather than "horror," stemming from the vastness and unpredictability of the ocean environment
[3:2]
[3:5]. Players have reported feeling a sense of dread when exploring unknown areas or encountering large sea creatures
[5:2].
Comparison to Original Subnautica
Many players find Below Zero less frightening than the original Subnautica. This is attributed to the game's more cramped environments and fewer threatening leviathans [2:2]
[2:4]. The sequel is considered more story-driven and discovery-focused, which may reduce the fear factor compared to the open-world exploration of the first game
[4:1]
[4:2].
Individual Experiences
Reactions to the game's scariness vary widely among players. Some individuals who are typically scared by horror games find Subnautica relaxing and not scary at all [2:1], while others who have fears related to the ocean find it terrifying
[3:1]
[5:9]. The game's immersive nature heightens the tension during encounters with the unknown, making these moments memorable
[5:10].
Thalassophobia and Exploration
For players with thalassophobia, the game can be particularly challenging due to its focus on underwater exploration [5:5]. However, the game offers a unique experience that allows players to confront and potentially overcome their fears through gameplay
[5:6]. Exploring the ocean depths and encountering alien life forms can be thrilling and rewarding despite the initial fear
[5:3].
In conclusion, Subnautica: Below Zero may have moments of tension and fear, but it is primarily an exploration game with a captivating atmosphere. Whether it's considered scary depends largely on individual perceptions and experiences with the ocean environment.
Hey all, I’ve been thinking about this game for a while now, it looks super cool and i looove space and the ocean BUT it creeps me out as well and was just wondering how scary the game actually is? Does it try and scare you the whole time like a horror game? Or is there just some scary parts mixed in? Id hate to pick up the game just to never play it cause im a chicken.
Also bonus question: can you build aquariums to keep alien fish in? Cause that may just make it worth the scares lol
Any info is greatly appreciated, thank you all in advance
Some scary parts when you're still getting used to the deeper areas, but as you get familiar with the game, you learn the routes and how to get by most if not all of the scary parts undetected. If you take your time to get to know the areas and explore instead of just gunning for finishing the game as soon as possible on the first try, you'll be fine.
You can make aquariums! You can make a room-sized aquarium or a smaller wall aquarium and put in eggs and fish you pick up.
Thank you! I think im gonna pick it up, especially if i can sneak around the scary bits, now one more question if you don’t mind, what percent of the fish in game drop eggs?
I believe all the fish drop eggs, it's just a matter of finding them. If not all then most
Lots. You find them just lying around on the ground
It doesn't purposfully scare you; your brain does.
I think it's masterfully designed though. Really gets you into the headspace of a lone survivor on an alien world.
Buy both games, it's well worth it.
Both games?
Subnautica, and Subnautica: Below Zero (sequel to the game, it's still in early access though. Just like with Subnautica though, they're doing a damn good job)
So you play Subnautica first, and then Below Zero to continue the story.
I hate horror games, but I love Subnautica and I think I boiled down why.
The scares in Subnautica are fair.
There are no canned jumpscares that you're railroaded into. The ocean contains dangerous things. When you run into them, it's due to chance. There are no "you run along a scary preplanned hallway while the monster almost gets you" cutscene-like segments. There is only open world gameplay. Scary stuff happens when it happens and you're never really safe, but if you're careful you can keep yourself safe.
Honestly? I fear the open water, so this games scares the shit out of me. I play it for 30minutes every day even though i'm scared.
This is my first playthrough and it's the scariest game I've ever played, but it's also not a horror game.it does have some jumpscares (you can totally play the game without any though) but it invokes more primal and subconscious fear while not having the intent to scare. Like imagine actually being stranded in the middle of the ocean.
I've played about 5 hours of below zero so far, and I have not had any sort of fear with it. It just doesn't have that scary feel , like the first game had in spades. It isint that I've played so much of the first game since even going back to the first game I'm still terrified. I think it's because below zero is very cramped, and from what I can tell, it's hard to find a leviathan of any sort. Is anyone else feeling this way?
Yeah. OG had me nope the f out of a few areas and remained very cautious.
Took several days before re-attempting the back of Aurora after I was 1 hit KO by the welcome committee.
1st day, came straight at me and ate my face in one go.
Below zero so far, has no way near the same effect. Maybe later, as I progress...
Yep, the seatruck with the afterburner flies right by them. I went into the void by accident in BZ and was like oh shucks and turned around. In the original first time it happened I almost shit my pants.
Way less Leviathans, and the ones it does have are way less threatening and do less damage.
Different game, different focus.
I admit, I didn't find the first game scary. It (BZ included) is the only 'scary' game I've ever played that didn't affect me, because I'm usually very easily scared.
Don't get me wrong, when something did jump out at me I got startled for a moment but for the most part, paddling around the murky depths is more relaxing than unnerving for me. Underwater exploration is an inherently appealing concept
I am the biggest scaredy-cat ever. I don't watch horror movies, I don't do jump scares, I legit spend a non-zero amount of my real life brain power worrying about zombies. I don't even like creepy vibes (looking at you, trailer for Firewatch).
I've played through Subnautica twice, and I would rate it as 0/10 scary. It didn't even occur to me that this might be considered a horror game until a friend expressed surprise that I was playing it, but then I started hanging out on this reddit and people are using words like, well, "scary".
I'm genuinely baffled. Can someone please explain?
(Like. If something jumped out at you in one of the alien structures, that would be scary. But otherwise? The monsters are animals? You can run away from almost all of them, and the Big Ones at the end you can easily avoid? What fundamental aspect of human psychology am I missing here?)
Thalassophobia
The fear of deep unknown water. Just darkness all around you, hearing things you cant see. No knowing what is around you.
It's not a horror game, it's a terror game if you get what I'm saying
There was actually an interview for Subnautica 3 with one of the developers where he said the EXACT same thing. That they as a studio recognize it as a game of terror, not horror. I don’t have a timestamp for him saying that but here’s the link:
https://youtu.be/kDuy-J9LtaE?si=0QBoWtktSTTl64c3
Edit: The convo about it being a terror game as opposed to horror starts at 18:35
Bingo. Constant dread, not wincing waiting for an intentional jump scare
Whats the difference between a terror and a horror game for you?
OK so we're complete opposites. I can watch any horror completely unfazed and il play the scary bits of resident evil for my fiancé whilst laughing at her reaction but subnautica terrified me. It's the only game that ever has. The first time I went out the shallows and saw the massive reefbacks I spent 15 mins getting up the courage to swim towards it 😅. Reapers give me a full body reaction.
You don't like creepy vibes, but you don't mind giant sea monsters appearing out of nowhere? I guess you're just a little different haha.
I mean, this is quite possibly the answer!!! I genuinely do not mind the reapers, but even with my eyes closed the cinema trailer for Five Nights at Freddie's gave me nightmares. Idk???
That is so wild to hear. Did you get like, desensitized to the leviathans? Or did they never give you any feeling of terror at all?
In VR- very!
I would play the FUCK out of this game if I had a VR set to play it with.
as someone who don't know how to swim, afraid of heights and wide open empty spaces like the ocean or space. I find the game scary and anxiety inducing.
At first I don't know anything about the game, I've just heard of it and found it free on PSN+ and gave it a try. At first no harm done and I was enjoying the game with lights off and with headphones and made a rookie mistake of going around aurora when i got the radiation suit and saw my 1st reaper got killed and resume exploring with that threat lingering at the back of my mind for some reason my body/brain was reacting to the fear. Felt claustrophobic, lightheaded, breathing heavily, so I decided to take a break and tried to check my BP as i don't feel so good which I found it a bit higher than usual. It went on for days until i decided to see a doctor as I thought my asthma is acting up, and found out I was having an anxiety attack which at first I don't know it felt that way. Newer felt that even though I've been playing horror games since I was 12.
I still enjoy the game though, just need to take a break from time to time. This time with the lights on and on speaker.
I really liked the original subnautica - I have about 40 hours on the game and platinumed it (which is super easy as all you have to do is complete the game with the odd trophy) and I am thinking about buying below zero.
I’m going to buy below zero anyway but I would just like to know if it is as bad as people say it is.
Ps. Please don’t spoil it
Yes, if the original was a 10/10 then BZ is an 8/10. More linear and story driven than the first, but still a great game. The base building and decorating aspect is massively improved in BZ
Yeah the main thing I liked about the original was the feeling of being alone but not being alone if ykwim
The "fear" and sense of being completely isolated is probably the weakest point of BZ to me without going spoiler. It feels much more discovery driven. It's still good but I'm at a 7/10 because the first was so right on point. I still love playing it and I'm glad I beat it.
Oh, and yes, you are swimming slower and the sea glide is slower 😁
I like how the story driven game barely gives you any direction
Nobody said “story” was a good driver. They’re just driving anyway. Lol
I like it, at least. It has its quirks and annoyances, like the leviathan clipping into my base nonstop. But, I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I feel like the people here saying 10/10 vs 8/10 have the right of it.
>!lol a chelicerate once clipped into a vent garden and i didn’t realize until i was inside it. somehow managed to get what i needed safe!<
>!It's not harming me, so other than being annoying, I'm good, lol. Does look weird seeing its fin and tail cut through my nuclear reactor on its way through my large room. Gave me an adrenaline burst the first time it happened. Like oh shit oh shit oh shit. Then it clipped through ME, and I realized I wasn't going to die.!<
Definitely worth it!
It’s a great game, and I often jump between the two.
Short answer: yes.
Long answer: yes, it's worth it.
😂😂😂
Yes, It is worth it
Hey I try to avoid horror games as much as possible which this game isn't but I keep reading people saying this is one of the most scary games they ever played. Seeing gameplay on YouTube I don't get it as it doesn't look scary and it has a really cool unique atmosphere. Yeh the leviathans seem a little scary but I think they only shown up very rarely? Is it more because those people have Thalassophobia fear of ocean or is it because the game is actually very scary? I have no fear of the ocean and scuba dive alot, so not sure if I'll be able to handle the game so contemplating to buy. Thoughts?
It’s just good for some jump scares. It’s a great game!
99.9% of people who claim they have Thalassophobia are the same people who say they have OCD because they like their house clean lol.
Disagree, I thought most of the fear came from feeling like a tiny part of this world that doesn’t care about your survival. Traversing the open ocean knowing there are giants that could come from the depths at any time, going deeper and finding unsettling recordings of past survivors, I was personally a bit surprised by how scary it could be even if it’s maybe not 100% horror at it’s core
Thalassophobia isn't a made-up fear. 😆 It's actually entirely logical to fear that kind of unknown. It's the only fear I have. I like playing survival on an island type games, but the second I'm in a raft floating above a seemingly endless mass of water with a LOT of things (real things) that could and would eat me, it makes my ears hum and heart rate sky rocket. With Subnautica, it just looked SO GOOD that I tried it. My fear kept me from even going into the Kelp Forest for almost two hours! If I can see the bottom? No issues. Once it's dark or murky? Oh no, it's all sitting dead still and backing up into the safe zone. In the end, I still managed to complete the game! The sonar and a map of the reaper locations really did help me get through the game, but I once had to pause the game for several minutes after a bone shark attacked me in an area it shouldn't have been in. 😆
If I had a fear of the ocean and swimming before I played Subnautica, does that not count as what you said ? I've tried to get better and less scared about it, but it feels much harder to do than a more normal fear
As a guy who is actually terrified of deep open water, let me tell ya: swimming on the surface from starter life pod towards an island and then midway through (out of stupid curiosity) taking a peek below me.. was so fucking scary I had to exit the game and not touch it for a couple of days. Even to this day after completing the game, that specific image of vastness below me still sends shivers down my spine.
Exactly the same experience with me! From that point on I just stayed in the sea glide near the floor, looking up at the vast emptyness is alot easier to deal with ahaha
All I can say is that I really enjoy watching Subnautica videos and don’t find them scary at all.
Playing it yourself is a totally different ball game though…
This. I just started playing and I needed peer pressure to leave safe shallows and start exploring
The majority of the game is not scary, but it is very immersive. This heightens the handful scary moments to be very memorable.
Yeah it's not scary in the way a lot of horror games are, but there is always a bit of tension as you move through a new area that feels really alien and you don't know what's going to appear out of nowhere. Also if you're playing with survival mode there is also that element of needing to ensure you can get back etc.
The YouTubers overreact for content, the game is only scary when you don’t know where the leviathans spawn
It's a subtle point - *overall* it's not a scary game, and it's not like a horror game with gruesome cut scenes or anything. It's mostly about calm exploration in an alien world where you have to respect the fauna. But indeed, one or two of the leviathans are really well-designed to be scary, and there's one particular attack animation that's a pretty effective jump scare. But it's important to have that threat at places, also because when you first play you don't know where those places are; it's not done "gratuitously". And you can mostly see/hear things coming, it's more about navigating them. I'd give it a go!
Is the game meant to be scary? Is there a real plot? I’ve never played. Whats the combat like i just thought the whole game was finding fish underwater lol
Subnautica is way more scary
It sure is... Below zero definitely never reached that level of horror
Yep
Looking forward to more of the same from this developer. The Cyclops was my favorite vehicle. What I'm really hoping is that they will expand upon the planet that they created, personally big fan of lovecraftian horror and scuba diving, this really fits the mark.
So I just beat Subnautica for the first time and really enjoyed the game! I have watched a few videos on Below Zero and I have noticed that almost everyone hates it😂 Since I really enjoyed the original game I thought of buying Below Zero but peoples take on it are making me hesitant.
Is it really that bad?? From what I have seen it looks cool, some new things to explore and ingredients for crafting things have been changed a bit. I love adventure/survival games so Im sure I will enjoy that part of the game, but is it the story that generates all the hate?? Leave some pros and cons about Below Zero if you want! That will help me make up my mind😆
It’s a great game in its own right. If you like the first you’ll like the second. The story line just got a bit muddled due to a change in project leadership midway through. I actually still like BZ a lot. Some of the biomes are stunning. My favorite is called Twisty Bridges
Question, should I play BZ before subnautica? So I then won’t be disappointed if I play BZ after? I’m finally getting ready to play and wasn’t planning on trying BZ until I read comments here
No, play Subnautica first. There's certain things that Subnautica explains that BZ doesn't, some of which are plot relevant.
In my opinion, I thought the story was good and overall the gameplay was good.
My problems stemmed from the fact that it was originally going to be a DLC and should've stayed that way. The way the game was at release and even the update sometime after, didn't warrant it being it's own game.
I'd advise playing it, I'm sure you would enjoy it based on your thoughts on the first but I'll also say it ain't as eerie nor scary as the first. Maybe on land, but not in sea. No leviathan underwater felt even remotely close to those from the first game.
Oh I didn’t know that! I am very late to be playing the original but I definitely want to give BZ a try!
I heard the same thing. I’m about midway maybe further from completing BZ and it’s just fine in its own right. Some of the plot devices to carry the story further can get muddled up so I’m currently trying to figure out what I’m missing.
I did like that I missed some early helpful things because I simply didn’t take my time to examine everything. Specifically an ore that seemed part of mid game recipes took me to late game to find.
my honest opinion is it's fine. it does have some issues. the OG does too. my biggest problem with it is the progression is like a firehose at the beginning. you have access to so much in the beginning that once you're past that initial rush of new tech and stuff to build you kind of hit a wall. It slows down.
another is the gatekeeping of the story. if you're like me and love going off in any direction exploring you could actually spoil the story for yourself.
My advice. let the game prompt you as to what to do next. Also take a lot of beacons or pathfinders especially doing the surface parts. the terrain is all white and looks the same and the weather (yeah this one has weather) makes it hard to navigate without landmarks.
Its OK. If you are expecting the same polish and immersion as the first, you won't find it.
Pros: New base building options, QoL improvements and more "streamlined" blueprint process.
Cons: Story is a mess, Main character talks way too much, map is quite small and game in general is much safer.
I'd say it is too safe as a game, on my first run in the OG i died a good bunch of times, even tho i spoiled myself most of the stuff by YouTube. In my first run of BZ i never died, i undestend i had familiarity with all the mechanics but still never died to a leviathan or such, which is a shame
a few mats are tricky. but yeah it's front loaded. the og had timed beacons with the radio calls though. none really were gatekeeping anything other than the Aurora explosion and the codes for the captain's quarters. and the depth requirements. BZ had so much on the surface.
I don’t think that’s even true of the OG Subnautica
They tried some different stuff - some of it worked well, some less so.
To make it harder, different people like or dislike different things about BZ.
I thought the multi-section sea truck was a great idea! I really loved it. Then I discovered that half of the truck sections are pretty much pointless - felt like they were stuck for ideas and time. Seriously, why the aquarium? 🤔
All to say, like most, I enjoyed the game, but I preferred the first game.
So I started playing this week, and I’ve been taking it slow. I like being immersed while playing. My room is small with blackout curtains, I play with 5.1 surround sound and a 65” OLED on my PS5… so the sound and visuals really set the atmosphere nicely.
I was deep into a 2–3 hour session—I think I was coming back from checking out the 500m survivor capsule. After dodging those Mars Attacks! lookong enemies, I ended up in the alien base past the Aurora, around 300m down. I thought, “Let’s see what’s down there.” It felt like The Abyss. I kept going down, and down, and down. The PDA warned me it was a dead environment and only Leviathans were there. I told myself, “I can take them.”
Then something translucent bumped into me, and I lost control. I panicked and started going up.
Suddenly, everything was pitch black. I was heading straight toward my marker for the Aurora when this loud screech blasted through my speakers. The sound went insanely high in my rear speakers, the bass hit my body, and I felt this horrifying sensation like I was actually going to die. I went cold—hands, feet—and even my dogs started barking. It felt so real.
There was no light—nothing. I didn’t let go of the L1 button, just kept going up until I broke the surface. Then I cruised back to my base, crawled under my bed, turned off the game, and went to my wife—who was working—and she just asked, “What was that awful noise!?”
Cant wait to go back!
I have thalassophobia and have yet to will myself to play - tho I bought and installed and everything as a way to face my fears.
One day!
I've been thinking about how to convince my thalassophobic friends to play. All I got is:
Pro: If you already have it installed, you could just splash around in the shallows pretending it's the saltwater pool at a private beach resort.
Cons: I personally didn't have thalassophobia, but I do now.
I never realised I had it until I played. However, this game made the highs feel better than the near constant dread. Some of the areas are beautiful and sorta gave me a bit of strength to keep on suffering through.
I had to get my gf to sit with me while I got through some sections, then my daughter took an interest and we finished it together.
100% believe you should face the fear!
I fear being lost, being underwater, being in the dark, I had to quit playing for 6 months at one point as I was too afraid to go to the deep zone. Turned out it wasn't too bad and by the end I loved the game so much I couldn't bear to finish it
I like to describe it as "it's a game that takes place in the ocean. Just so happens that the ocean is a scary place."
Well the game in itself isn't necessarily a horror game when you take a step back and look at what's actually going on it's quite horrifying.
You play as a guy who's stranded on an alien ocean planet. A very quickly becomes apparent that even though you made it to an escape pod the fact that you survived it all was purely a roll of the dice, you get lucky.
Add to that you're forced to explore the area instead of just settling on one of the islands because the water and fish are all infectious. I am curious if it could be figured out how long the infection should have taken to kill Riley and how many players actually manage to finish getting the cure within that time period.
Mhm. That's a better spelled-out version of my little quip. It's a scary situation to be in no doubt. But speaking strictly genre-wise, the tropes used to move the beats of the story along would probably fall more into adventure than horror.
The Degasi crew seems to be present on the planet a pretty long time(even if we disregard that Marguerit lives until the events of current day through dubious means), so I think its safe to assume that you'd live several months before dying, especially if you eat peepers.
I watched a pretty decent video essay on Subnautica in which they described it as a horror game pretending to be a survival game which is actually a terror game.
Edit. Wrong way around.
I think my game glitched one time, it gave me and my cyclops a ride back close to the safe shallows where I belonged
If you go to far out of the boundaries the bouncer comes. I just ended up on its back and it went far past where it usually goes trying to attack me I believe
yeah its a "not intentionally scary the devs just forgot the ocean is literal Eldridge horror-"
I'd love to get Subnautica because I always thought it looked cool but I have bad thalassophobia and I've played dredge but even on peaceful I still can't get myself to go into the deep parts of the water unless necessary and just close my eyes if any of the monsters come near me because I just idk it just freaks me the hell out
Subnautica is a constant battle between curiostiy and fear. And believe me: with this game, curiostiy will always win.
You'll have a great experience. Have fun!
The story will bring you pretty deep and into some fairly scary things, it’s a really fun game though, if you can take the fear, I’d get it, and even if you can’t the starter biomes are safe and calm and beautiful, you can always do things other than the story, I’m just not sure for how long
This game is even better with thalassophobia.
Yup. I was scared shitless by Jaws as a kid, I didn't go in the water for five years. But I watched a streamer friend play through it and I took the plunge (pin intended), have now beaten it three times.
Have you watched many YouTubers play it? Especially ones with real thalassaphobia? Butchx3 has extreme thalassaphobia and if yours is as bad as his, then that's the kind of time you'll have. He managed to finish the game, and gets desensitized sorta. He released a bunch of other content from the game though as well, so as much as it fucked him, he (I think?) enjoyed it enough to push through.
Butch's Subnautica adventures was the best. I laughed so much
The overall message I've gotten so far is fear is good. The lesser message is don't play. Well I guess I'm going to go buy myself some new underwear
I played through the entirety of Below Zero and I think you should too. I had a blast with the game and thought it was pretty enjoyable overall and would probably play again sometime. I can understand a lot of the criticisms people have with the game and why they don't like it as much as the original. However if I'm going to be frank, I think it's been blown way out of proportion, Subnautica Below Zero is in my opinion a really fun game, it's not Subnautica 2. I'm not saying their criticism is not valid, but people act like the game is absolutely horrible. So many videos and posts saying "Why I HATE Below Zero" or "Subnautica Below Zero, where did it go wrong?" Everyone is allowed to have their own opinions, and if you don't like the game that's fine, but It's slightly irritating to just find the only thing that people ever talk about with this game is acting like it's the worst video game of all time, we got two games with tons of attention and care put into them, when Subnautica easily could have been a one hit wonder. So if you haven't played Below Zero because you've been offput, I'd seriously recommend giving it a shot. I think it's pretty good personally.
Below zero did not fulfill that itch Subnautica gives me. I think they focused on land too much and didn’t give the ocean more love
I think of Below Zero as a DLC rather than a sequel to the original game. It puts all other thoughts out the window and makes me restart from the beginning.
Your not gonna believe this, but it is a DLC, its not in continuation to the original storyline, but subnautica 2 is Meaning there’s probably gonna be four games, a continuation to BZ after SN2
Honestly the main problem with Below Zero is that the devs saw all the feedback of everything people adored about Subnautica... and then sprinted as quickly as they could in the opposite direction.
So if you play it the first time, without knowing this, you end up coming across a bunch of decisions that make no sense, a bunch of stuff that destroys the atmosphere, and a bunch of stuff that just feels like a dramatic step back in terms of satisfaction from the original game. Mechanically speaking it was a big step forward. In terms of the overall quality and execution, though, it was a stumble at best.
Problem is you need to give the devs feedback to ensure they know, specifically, what's wrong with the game and what they need to change - and when you're really invested into something, when you're super passionate about it, the frustration you feel when a developer doesn't understand why people are passionate about it is twice as intense. It's like... You made this thing I love, but you don't even understand why I love it? You just fluked your way into a success and the stuff I loved was, what, an accident? That I'll never get the stuff I loved again from you because you don't know what I loved despite me directly telling you?
It's a very love/hate situation - but honestly, that's generally for the best. If someone hates something so vociferously it's because they care about it. That they want to like it but they can't for whatever reason. That they're frustrated that they can't enjoy it as much as they want to. This means your next game - assuming you get the chance - has the opportunity to listen to that feedback and improve. Mostly, though, it's a generally positive thing because the alternative is far, far worse: apathy. Once an audience becomes apathetic you no longer have a second chance. You no longer have them paying attention to you, to see if you succeed, to try to win them back. They just leave and never come back. That's what actually kills games - and franchises - in the end: people stop caring at all.
As far as videos saying "WHY I HATE X" go, that's easy: it's clickbait. Big dramatic titles, big "oh I hate this so much for this reason" gets clicks. People are more interested if they think something significant has happened. If you just say "well it's okay but really disappointing" in the title then people just go "oh. Well. Don't need to watch that because I've got their opinion right there." If someone hates it, though? Obviously there's something big the devs screwed up! Gotta check that out.
Below zero is gorgeous and vibrant. The storyline has a lot more hand holding and the game isn’t as scary as the first, but I still agree that it’s worth playing. Just don’t go into it expecting it to be the same as the first one
I actually think out of both games, the crystal caves are the scariest for me. It was a perfectly executed area IMO.
Yk the crystal caves had a very acute sense of imminent danger, so I get it. Subnautica had that overall atmosphere of I never knew what was around, the world is so big and you’re completely alone, you have no choice but to keep going deeper and darker, and this feeling of not knowing what you’re doing or what you’re up against. It’s that atmosphere that REALLY gave the actual dangerous situations such a kick. It’s a different type of fear and if you’ve already played the first one you probably don’t even get it back when you play it again. One of those, wish I could do it again for the first time type things
I really hated the bike, the caves, and pretty much all the land in BZ. This kinda ruined the game for me.
I played it right after completing SN, and it was a great expansion of the experience. I'm actually surprised when people who played SN say they didn't like BZ
i finally finished bz recently and i thought it was pretty good. like yeah the story is awful and they should’ve went with the original one and kept it as dlc and not a standalone game. but the environments are so fleshed out with stuff everywhere and i was constantly getting distracted with cool stuff, the transitions in between biomes feel a little forced sometimes though but i don’t mind much. tldr: play the game
I actually beat below zero today, and I can say I enjoyed it just as much as subnautica 1, only part I hated was when it just stops Hand holding you a little, which makes you lost
There's a certain part of the game where you have to find the location of something. The game even gives you the location for this thing with a red circle. But fuck me, it took two evenings before I gave up and looked for a video showing how to get to it. I don't know if anybody had the same experience, but I felt like that particular part was very frustrating and poorly designed.
is subnautica below zero scary
Key Considerations:
Atmosphere and Environment: Subnautica: Below Zero features a rich, immersive underwater world that can create a sense of isolation and tension. The dark depths and eerie sounds contribute to a suspenseful atmosphere.
Creatures: The game includes various alien creatures, some of which can be intimidating or aggressive. Encounters with these creatures can be startling, especially in the more confined spaces of the ocean.
Survival Elements: The survival mechanics, such as managing health, oxygen, and resources, can add to the tension. Players may feel anxious when exploring unknown areas or when their resources are low.
Jump Scares: While the game is not primarily a horror title, there are moments that can catch players off guard, leading to jump scares, particularly when encountering larger predators.
Personal Sensitivity: Individual reactions to fear can vary widely. Some players may find the game thrilling and engaging, while others may feel more anxious or scared due to the atmosphere and creature encounters.
Takeaway: Subnautica: Below Zero can be considered scary, particularly for players who are sensitive to atmospheric tension and unexpected encounters. If you enjoy exploration and survival games with a hint of suspense, you may find the experience thrilling rather than purely frightening. If you're easily scared, be prepared for some tense moments!
