Exploration and Immersion
Subnautica is widely praised for its immersive exploration experience. Players often describe the game as feeling like a real adventure, where discovering new resources and navigating the ocean depths is both challenging and rewarding [4:1]. The lack of clear objectives and navigation aids enhances the sense of being lost in an alien world, which many players find enjoyable
[4:2]. This aspect of the game is reminiscent of the first-time experience with other open-world games like Minecraft
[4].
Vehicle Mechanics and Challenges
The PRAWN suit in Subnautica has received mixed reviews from players. While some appreciate its capabilities, others find it clunky and difficult to maneuver, particularly in rough terrain [3]. The grappling hook feature was a favorite among players in the original Subnautica, allowing for fast and dynamic movement. However, in Subnautica: Below Zero, this feature was nerfed, leading to disappointment among fans who enjoyed the momentum-based gameplay
[3:6],
[3:9].
Atmosphere and Aesthetics
Subnautica's atmosphere is described as eerie and cinematic, contributing to its unique appeal [2]. The game's design and soundscapes create a tense environment that keeps players engaged. While some players have expressed interest in more realistic submarine physics and damage models, the existing gameplay mechanics are generally well-received for their ability to maintain suspense and excitement
[5].
Community and Replayability
Many players express a desire to relive the experience of playing Subnautica for the first time due to its engaging exploration and discovery elements [4:3]. The game has cultivated a strong community of fans who enjoy sharing their experiences and tips for navigating the game's challenges. Despite some criticisms regarding vehicle mechanics and physics, Subnautica remains a beloved title for its innovative approach to survival and exploration gameplay
[4:5].
Overall, Subnautica offers a compelling blend of exploration, survival, and atmospheric storytelling that continues to captivate players. Whether you're diving into the depths for the first time or revisiting the alien oceans, the game provides a rich and rewarding experience.
Do what you think is more fun for yourself. If you’re thinking about maximizing views and engagement, I’d say it depends. A camera filming yourself isn’t really needed regardless. Commentary is only really appreciated if you’re English speaker and you speak it WELL. Unless of course your content isn’t aimed at another language speaking demographic.
Personally i enjoy silent and just ingame music. Nothing more stressful than a hectic teenager YouTuber yelling at me when I’m trying to relax.
Thanks for the advice ☺️
Id say faceless but commenting about what u do. I would be very happy to watch u play
Thanks ☺️ i Will let you know if i ever end up doing it :D I've been wanting to start this project for almost 5 years now 😂😂
Feel free to reach out in DM, there’s simply too much to discuss in a comment but I’m happy to help! The small creator is the backbone of the community
I'd say it depends, and to do what you're comfortable with and what you want to do.
Generally, most gameplay videos I've seen use a combination of commenting/voice for the parts that warrant some explanations or guidance and some background music when just showing things. Most regular videos wouldn't need to have a camera per se.
But ultimately, as said at the start, create what you want to create. People are attracted to authenticity ultimately. If you're making things you're not enjoying to make, people will be able to tell that usually.
Good luck!
Submarine gameplay is cancer consisting of dodging salvos at the surface and taking no damage, then unleashing auto aiming torpedoes before rapidly going under and resurfacing to prevent an enemy lock on when too close. They play more like pt boats and they need actual counterplay outside of fast firing guns.
I’d love to have submarine only mode with far longer oxygen time, and the ability to exchange fire underwater.
Also with sonar and a more realistic damage model like the silent thunder event.
Fake. If you don't play subs like a PT boat I don't like you and you're a nerd (I'm gonna watch a sink ship underwater now)
Hahahahaha
I might start playing naval if they add sailors hopelessly flailing in water as their ship sinks.
The PRAWN in Subnautica: Ugh, I hate this thing. It's a clunky, battery-guzzling power suit poorly designed for rough terrain. It once used three percent of its power to step over a limestone node. Its painfully inadequate booster rockets seem designed to send you tumbling into the bowels of the sea, usually at a point where you're critically low on power or desperate for a bottle of water.
For most of the game, your adversary is the environment, but when you're wearing the PRAWN, your adversary is the PRAWN. Crummy steering, poor downward visibility, and as agile as a graveyard statue. Every moment is a struggle.
The PRAWN in Subnautica: Below Zero: My God, I LOVE this thing. This is a game-breaker, seriously; striding across the frozen wilderness completely protected from the worst cold and the most brutal monsters on offer. Do you know what you have to go through to put together a cold suit without it? It's a nightmare.
I spent days romping around the Arctic Spires and the Glacial Basin in this thing, poking all the little corners I didn't get a chance to look at when I just had a Snowfox. The batteries lasted practically forever, and the rockets were a go-anywhere cheat code. Not once was it completely halted by a small pebble. It's practically immune to Snow Stalkers and even Ice Worms don't do it too much damage.
Most of this is contextual - the PRAWN is simply more useful in the Arctic Basin than in, say, the Jellyshroom Cave. But I think there were some modifications to the suit, too. The Below Zero PRAWN seems more maneuverable and skips lightly through water environments. Whether that's environmental or practical, I don't know, but at least I can get around in it without wanting to strangle something.
I think we played different games cuz I hate the prawn in BZ its clunky takes fucking 10000 years to actually hit the ground and chews through power like a chainsmoker goes through cigarettes. I think my biggest issue with it in BZ is the fact that they made ALL of its un-grounded movement cost boost when in the original, only the upward boost costed boost. In Subnautica 1 the prawn suit it clean with its movements and once you get the grapple arm you can outspeed the seamoth because of all the open space. I did a playthrough of BZ recently and I can say that I almost never used the grapple arm in my playthrough and typically just had that arm free for picking things up. The BZ prawn suit genuinely made me dislike the game way more.
I never quite got the grasp of Spidermanning around in Subnautica, but I gotta agree that the glide in Subnautica BZ was more annoying than it was useful. I basically flew through the whole lava section of the original game, whereas in this one, nah, gotta wait for the boost to recharge every 5 seconds because, god forbid, you actually used the Prawn to move forward.
The momentum you can generate and maintain using a grapple arm in the first game cannot be replicated in the second. Prawn suit in Subnautica is better
Counterpoint: this part isn't as needed in the second as it is in the first. However, I do wish it maintained some of that (if nerfed) so that it would be better to explore the late-game deep water caves with, instead of really needing to hook it up to the Seatruck and ferry it between drilling nodes to make decent time.
Well, it's probably a skill issue then, because I never got the hang of the Tarzan thing. (So to speak.) Most of my Adventures in Grappling left me dangling from the side of the same cliffs waiting for the jump jets to recharge. The grappling hook was an optional extra, and I wasn't predisposed to go hunting for aftermarket parts just to make the PRAWN useful. I'm colorblind, so navigating the Inactive Lava Zone is like driving in the dark with the headlights off. I was also unlucky enough to get a version of the game where the PRAWN melded with the floor of alien bases, rendering it useless.
By the time the updates came through and the PRAWN was actually useful, I'd spent so much time developing workarounds for it that I barely needed it. One trip, no grappling hook, only depth upgrades, straight to the Castle and the Alien Base to activate the teleporters, and nothing else was necessary.
In Below Zero, I found the Arctic Zones a nightmare. My first playthrough, my solution for not having a cold suit was to bring the resources to build an I-compartment and use it to warm up every ninety seconds. Since I'd spent years avoiding the PRAWN, I didn't naturally consider it. Also, I'm noticing on my current Creative playthrough that the Glacial Basin is actually pretty hard to navigate, and the map is a joke. (But what's life without a few challenges?)
My first time standing on the landing pad at Phi Robotics in a PRAWN suit was like experiencing a miracle. This thing didn't just protect against cold, it minimized every single challenge in the Arctic land zones. Even Ice Worms couldn't do it too much damage. I wore out the power packs romping around exploring every nook and cranny that time, haste, and fleeing giant monsters prevented me from exploiting on my first and second playthroughs. This thing that I'd spent years trying to avoid actually had a use, in a zone where it couldn't get stuck. This ugly brick was finally relevant.
In all honesty, it actually felt a little unfair. Half the fun of the Subnautica games are how unintuitive they are, and what solutions the player comes up with to overcome their challenges. I kept thinking, "This can't be the designers' intent." Nope - PRAWN suit; the solution and not the problem, for a change.
This. I was beyond disappointed when I got the prawn in Below Zero and discovered the momentum trick is gone. For me one of the most fun parts was slingshotting around the map with the hook, seeing how fast you can go. It also sounds like it has a diesel engine now?!
Edit: it's still rapid on land with the grappling hook
I was so sad when I got the grappling hook and realized what they did to it. The fact that it completely kills any momentum you may have, as soon as you release the grapple feels awful. I wasn't amazing at slingshotting in the original, but I was decent. Why not just have it so you slow down quickly! It would still suck, but maybe wouldn't feel quite as bad.
This. By far.
I miss grapple sling-shotting so much in BZ.
I agree as well. Didn't bother with the prone in below zero
Well, I don't feel so strongly against the first games Prawn, I love it all the same. Ultimate end-game vehicle. Jump jets and a grapple and you can go anywhere.
Your not using the grapple arm then. Yes, the jet boosters are better in BZ, because they nerfed the grapple arm and needed some way of making the prawn suit usable.
I kinda hate how you can't pull an spiderman in Below zero, not even getting on a leviathan and kick him all the way
this game is really fun i’ve been having a lot of fun collecting resources driving around in the seamamoth. and finding things on my own is super rewarding i know absolutely nothing about this game so it’s been really fun exploring the ocean and figuring out what i need to do next. i can’t wait to build a base and get the cyclops it feels like how i felt playing minecraft for the first time
Have fun! Truly one of the best games to just play withtout looking stuff up and enjoying the exploration.
I would give anything to go back and play for the first time again.
Literally the BEST GAME EVER MADE!!! Change my mind
Its a BZ discussion not OG game lol
I mean like the whole series. I love BZ
>seamamoth
I’m imagining a 4-legged submersible AT-AT prawn suit.
Me too OP! I bought it on sale weeks ago and finally dived in this past Sunday. First time I’ve played a game like this that actually feels like I’m lost. No navigation, no clear objectives telling me what to do next. And I love it…(mostly)!
Hi guys just got this game and enjoying it so far, but what's up with the sub physics? it's like the sub is on a rail which goes up and down sometimes. I was really looking forward to some deep depth blow ballast and the shooting up with the bow out the water and slamming back down or plowing thru the seas like das boot but it was well anti climax.. Any mods fix this?
I just think it's weird how the boat seems to rise stern first when you surface.
Remember, UBOAT was meant as a casual sandbox and crew management game, and a lot of the systems in place still allude to that. Apart from that, the developers consist of two people. So there's only so much you can expect.
But what you've mentioned here is by far my biggest gripe with the game. Let's hope it gets addressed in 2025.2.
Until then, SH3 is in the best shape of its life. GWX-KC is about to receive its 1.1 update, and the GWX OneAlex version gets a new All-in-One modpack release in September.
Silent hunter 3 has what youre looking for
But it looks so ancient, at least 5 has passable graphics. Even 4 is a big step up.
Silent hunter 3 is still the most realistic sub sim there is.
I have 150+ jours in uboat and went back to sh3.
Graphics are passable to me as the game is super immersive.
It's a bit better with mods, but yes it's old.
Like not even 800 tons of displacement for a Type VII. But the boat physics could be better: rn it bobs like a cork and stops like car.
If you're caught in a full on storm it's very close.
Also, if you're going Speed 5, at Alarm, and order a crash dive, it's almost as quick as Boots.
By upgrading your sailors, you can increase the dive speed also.
Omg I couldn't see these bubbles
Congrats! I still haven't finished the mobile version but I'm working on it. It's nice to have a reason to return to the depths again.
I was always interested in Subnautica, but as a dad I barely get screen time, so I nether played it so far. But I have some spare time on a phone, sitting in the train or other time windows here and there. The mobile port is a blessing!
I'm just a few hours in yet, but I'm totally into it. It's as good as I always assumed!
Its fantastic. on any device. gg's man. gl/gj parenting :D
Try it on PC. Absolute. Immersion.
He just explained why he can't play it on PC, lol...
Why does it look better than switch version 😭
Because phones in 2025 are many times faster than a Switch. The Switch has a mobile chipset released for an Nvidia tablet 10 years ago.
I played it for the first time back in December after I finished my associate’s degree and had a few months off before I started a job. Finished a game, started another one. And another one. And another one. I played Subnautica for basically a month straight, 8+ hours a day.
It’s addicting.
It's one of my favourite game so bought it yesterday on Android . Very well optimised. I tested it on a high end phone with an 8 gen 3 chip and also on a mid level chip dimensity 8300 ultra and it runs at 60fps on balanced settings . Loading times are negligible. Strangely it runs better on my phone as compared to the rog ally . On the ally I notice some frame drops although very rarely but till now no jitters or frames drops on the phone version. And it looks better on the phone because of the amoled display . Just wanted to share my experience incase someone is thinking about giving it a go.
Where did you get it from? Is it available on Playstore?
Yes . It is both on playstore and apple app store
Lemme know how you think I'm planning to play this too !
Anything specific you want to know ?
Not really but since its new to phone how is it gonna work i mean can it be compared to one in pc ? Anything deleted and overall the vibe and performance of game

I know I'm crazy late to the party and subnautica's been on my list to play for a long time. A couple weeks ago I finally got around to sitting down and playing it.
Wow... Dayum... Just... What a great friggin game. I finally finished it and did all the things. What an awesome, wild experience.
I haven't felt this way about a game in a long time. As a married father who is a working professional, I haven't had a game grab and keep my limited free time attention in this way. I couldn't wait to get off work and finish my household obligations so I could figure out what's in the next biome, or where to get the materials to make the next thing, or exactly where I should build that base...
The reason I'm sharing this is because coming to this Subreddit helped me a lot when I was stuck, or couldn't figure out what to do next, or was just looking for a little inspiration to dive deep in the dark, scary places of Planet 4546B.
I'm going to go play Sub-zero now. Even though it seems like some people don't like it? When Subnautica 2 comes out, I'm going to buy that and play it too. Regardless of whatever the drama is surrounding studio shenanigans and leadership blah blah, don't care.
I'm just gonna go enjoy whatever's next. I'd encourage everyone to try to do a little bit more of that than focus on the mundanity of modern game development.
Good luck and keep diving or something like that.
well said, friend. i got distracted from my sub-zero playthrough, but i didn't really dislike it at any point. you'll definitely run into some sections that aren't as fun, but i think that sub-zero is an overall fun and respectable successor
Below zero is a great sequal. In my opinion, below zero has the most interesting biomes and wildlife. People complain about the sequel because it's not as big or bigger than the first one when it comes to size. But the quality is just the same. I think you'll enjoy it alot.
My advice for below zero is wait a bit to play it. I went right from the first one to it and I think a lot of people do this and it contributes to how it’s viewed. Let Subnautica stew a little in your head and play something else and soon you will get the urge to play again and THEN play Below Zero. I think you will get more enjoyment from it this way.
