TL;DR
Popular Series
Jenny Han is best known for her two popular series: "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" and "The Summer I Turned Pretty." These books are highly recommended by fans of cute YA fiction [1]. The "To All the Boys" series includes "P.S. I Still Love You" and "Always and Forever, Lara Jean," while "The Summer I Turned Pretty" series has been praised for its engaging storyline and relatable characters
[5].
Screen Adaptations
Both series have been adapted into screen productions, which have garnered a significant following. The adaptations of "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" (TATBILB) and "The Summer I Turned Pretty" (TSITP) have been well-received, with discussions about potential future projects like "XO Kitty" that exist in the same universe [3:2]
[3:7].
Potential New Projects
There is speculation and hope among fans that Jenny Han might venture into writing non-YA love stories or continue adapting other authors' works for screen [3:1]
[3:3]. Some fans express interest in seeing prequels or spin-offs related to existing series, such as a Laurel/Susannah prequel from TSITP
[3:4].
Other Recommendations
For readers who enjoy Jenny Han's style, several other authors and books have been suggested. These include Morgan Matson, E. Lockhart, Kasie West, and Sarah Dessen [1:1]
[1:5]. Specific titles like "Anna and the French Kiss" by Stephanie Perkins and "What Happy Looks Like" by Jennifer E. Smith are also recommended for those seeking similar lighthearted romance stories
[2:2].
I love any Jenny Han book (to all the boys I’ve loved before, the summer I turned pretty) and books like Anna and the French Kiss, things like that. If u haven’t read any Jenny Han books I highly suggest you walk not run to amazon and order them all
"The Half-Life of Planets," by Emily Franklin and Brendan Halpin
"The Summer I Saved the World ... in 65 Days," by Michele Weber Hurwitz
"Little Women," by Louisa May Alcott
The Duff by Kody Keplinger is a pretty cute YA read
Pretty much anything by Sarah Dessen would do you well.
Came here to say this!!
I love Kasie West books. I recommend you The Distance Between Us, By your side and Listen to your heart.
I love Morgan Matson books. They are fun summery YA books. They make me think of all the drama of friends and boys.
E. Lockhart is another author of YA type romance/drama. I love her sence of humor and style. Though her newer books are more serious.
I am finding book a that is lighthearted and will make butterflies in my stomach. I read all jenny han's book series. My favorite is the summer i turned pretty series. Please help me relieve my stress. Thanks in advance!
Anything by Jennifer E Smith. What Happy Looks Like is a good starting point.
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins is another good one.
I actually read the series of Amna and the French Kiss and I looooove it. Cameo of characters from each books got me excited. It makes 10% of my teenage years. Haha
Will def try What Happy Looks Like. Thank you!
I was just wondering what everybody's thoughts are on what is next for Jenny? What they'd like to see her do?
I have been obsessed with the screen adaptations of TATBILB and TSITP- but the books much less so, perhaps because they target YA and I am most certainly nowhere near that anymore! I found the books a bit superficial and underdeveloped- but again, probably I am the wrong demographic.
I'd love for Jenny to write a non YA love story as new material. I'd be really intrigued to see if a non YA Jenny Han project would hook me in maybe even more!
Interested in everyone's thoughts around this....
I hope she does get a bit more involved in XO Kitty and that that runs for a few more seasons with her full focus. It has the potential for a Netflix film as well. I feel like that show has a lot of potential. And could be even better with more time and investment. I prefer it to TATBILB by quite a stretch even though it has no book source material but exists in the same universe.
It’s tricky for Jenny and what she does next as two huge franchises with beloved characters are ending for her and it’s likely XO Kitty has one or two more seasons maximum. I expect she might need to go in a new direction. So as you suggest maybe she’ll leave YA behind and try something darker/more complex. It’s hard though as she has nailed that demographic and audience and will have people eagerly awaiting her next, which is almost guaranteed success or at least interest and a ready-made audience.
That comes with drawbacks too though as she gets held to her books a lot and because the relationship/character ‘wars’ in her fandoms can get quite intense, I feel it sort of limits her creative freedoms as people can have specific and high expectations. So I think she should try something different.
I wonder if she sticks with TV and film and doesn’t return to writing novels for a while. I’m similar to you in that I have browsed the books and don’t connect with them but love the shows and the characters she creates.
I agree with everything you have said here.
It'll maybe be a choice between continuing with her YA niche that she does well, versus moving into something new and different... or both!
I guess life is about taking risks! Maybe she has enough YA stock that she can dip into other things now for a couple of years and still return to it.
She hasn’t touched xo kitty at all this season with filming! It’s so weird to see her so disconnected. It really is a good show (with the second season being much better than the first)
Perhaps she’ll be more involved now, you never know.
I may have imagined this but I thought I read that Jenny Han was writing a new book that wasn’t YA.
Ooooooo. I hope she continues to adapt books. She does a great job. Maybe its just when its her work but i would love to see her work on Emily Henry movie adaptations.
Oooo I'd definitely read this if it isn't YA!
Yes I think I heard this too!
I’d love a Laurel / Susannah prequel
I'm sure I'm not the only one who watched "We were liars" while waiting for TSITP. Since that's going to get a prequel about the moms, they could do another parallel with TSITP. Though I'm not sure if a TSITP prequel would be set at the summer house or rather at college.
I just want my kitty and Minho endgame. Bonrad is confirmed. 😭
Books include
The summer I turned pretty
To all the boys I loved before
P.S. I still love you
Always and forever Lara Jean
Aw I love that the summer I turned pretty is narrated by the actress from the show
If I already have it in my library will I get to keep it?
Only if it’s in your purchase history
I’m confused I had it in my library and it vanished. I tried to buy it again and it says it’s not available.
All her books are available for purchase on my end.
Even books that you add to your library for free through the plus catalog should still show up in your library but they will be locked. Not sure about reasons it wouldn’t be in your library anymore.
Ah ok thank u!! Must be a glitch on my end
Added .Thank you !!!
Who's your favorite author? I would say mine is Jenny Han, she wrote "The Summer I Turned Pretty", and "To All The Boys I've Ever Loved", so far "The Summer I turned Pretty" has been turned into a show, and "To All The Boy I've Ever Loved" has been turned into a movie series.
alice oseman, and rick riordan!
I also love Rick Riordan!!!
Two great authors!!!
Rick Riordan , Holly Jackson, Freida McFadden (im not sure that’s how it’s spelled but yeah) , my best friend
Rick Riordan most definitely
Holly Jackson!
Suzanne Collin’s because of her Hunger Games series, Rick(it said d!ck before due to autocorrect so sorry about that, I fixed it) Riordon because of the Percy Jackson series(+its sequel series), and Alice Oseman because of her Heartstopper series(+Radio silence and Loveless, two of her single books not from a series)
I’ve only watched the series and films but I have never ever read the books. So if anyone out there could tell me their opinions about the books please help do!! I can buy both of the series but I’m limiting myself this may and the presale date they’ve set for ‘to all the boys I’ve loved before’ is not helping. I would like to ask your opinions on which one you like better and which one are you getting. Thanks in advance.
I’m definitely getting to all the boys, it was the series that got me back into reading years ago. Is it good? Not really. But I do enjoy it
I think they both have their appeal. #1 looks like it'll be cooler but #2 is giving me Sailor Moon vibes. As for the books I hear similar feedback on both I also only watched the shows. I think I prefer To All The Boys I Loved Before, buuuut The Summer I Turned Pretty seems like it's more suited for adult audiences.
to all the boys was literally one of the cringiest and worst book series i’ve ever read. i loved it
Lmao
I also read the books after watching the show/movie, but they were both very mid and not worth $100 for a fancy version. I suppose TAtBILB is better writing but I would strongly recommend reading them first before investing in something so pricey.
i love the books for to all the boys i’ve loved before, and i love the show for the summer i turned pretty. the movies for tatbilb were good but not as good as the books, and while i enjoyed the books for tsitp i didn’t like it as much as the show (probably bc i was a little older when i read tsitp whereas tatbilb i was a little younger). overall they’re not bad and i would buy these sets if i loved the books slightly more but the designs are beautiful
She is the author “to all the boys” series on Netflix and “the summer I turned pretty” on Amazon prime. Nothing against her and I love her tv shows (since there is some kind of Asian representation). But the fact that she always pairs AF with WM shows the deep rooted mentality of what a desirable man should be (aka white male). Literally all her story plots are how young Asian female or half Asian female got hit on by a bunch of white male and it ends up being a fairy tale story for the AF. It is quite sad even with AF author/writer, AM still wouldn’t stand a chance…
Amy Tan, Maxine Kingston-Hong, Celeste Ng, etc, et al got some serious competition to distort and pervert the culture and sexuality for WMs even some more now...
Plain and simple, she is one of those self-hating Asian women who want to spread their agenda, there isn't much beyond that.
Nothing against her? You sure you’re in the right subreddit?
Another easy boycott.
yeah, she loves af/wm pairing, does she have a white partner? LOL please let me know if you find any asianxasian love stories!! sex and vanity by kevin kwan has a wasian female x asian male story which is cute af too
Tbh I don’t mean to call anyone out or single out a certain group of people but if we are being honest, alot of the times when i see someone saying Jenny is a bad writer it’s coming from someone of team jere and it’s about book 3. Now i 100% believe that everyone is entitled to their opinions and should be able to express them but this opinion in particular is very much an insult and isn’t true at all. It’s safe to say that most of us have been in the Jenny Han era since “To All The Boys I Loved Before” (2018-2021), Tsitp ofc (2022-23) and now awaiting for season 3, and her spin off show “XO, Kitty” (2023) which was almost instantly renewed for a s2 after its release. This goes to show that we have been witnessing the success of Jenny and her stories and how well she’s been able to bring them on screen and grow a bigger audience to her work and just bring a new life to what she had already created. And we should appreciate that and be happy for her because she gets re-fall in love with her work and gets to explore more of her creativity like we’ve seen in Tsitp s2 with all the changes and add ons that she and the rest of the cast and crew worked so hard to give us.
Now I’ve also seen people say because Jenny is a writer/author and that her work is expected to critiqued and while that is correct, we have to know that there’s good criticism and bad criticism and in this case it’s bad criticism because i feel like saying she’s a lazy or bad writer is unfair and is a personal insult to her. And when you say something like that it has a bigger affect than you think because it applies and reflects on all her work and not just one book, so yes go ahead and disagree with her writing or how she wrote a character that’s fine but there’s a way to go about it and a way to express those disagreements / opinions to where it doesn’t have to be so harsh and can be respectful. I was gonna deep dive into book 3 because this is where these comments are stem from but i want listen to the audio book for a second time before I give my opinion on it because I personally liked book 3 but I understand where a lot of the disagreement comes from.
I think its more so that TSITP series is Jenny’s first book series and she went into the books not really knowing how to end it, so its kinda messy and sloppy. That being said, I don’t think she is a terrible writer and she has improved significantly, which is great and normal! Not everyone is gonna throw out a hit when its their first time, you can look at reviews from when the book series first dropped and many people were upset about book 3. Its a stretch to say Jenny is a bad writer but there is criticism that is due for that particular series.
Either way, I think everyone agrees that all her TV adaptations are works of art. It allows her to bring her stories to life and improve upon things, realizing what should’ve changed looking back at what she wrote. Its beautiful, its growth. I definitely understand where others are coming from. I see your perspective as well. Thank you for sharing.
Good criticism = you agree with it / bad criticism = you don’t
No not necessarily, you can give good criticism when disagreeing with something, for example when people say book three was rushed or that there’s inconsistency with her writing, that’s helpful criticism because she learn and work on those things, but saying things like she’s a bad / lazy writer isn’t helpful at all and doesn’t really provide insight on what need to work on to be better, which is why i said it’s bad criticism.
She isn’t looking to fans for advice on writing. Especially not on a series that was released ten years ago. Book criticism (as well as film & television criticism) is not meant for the writer. It’s meant for the consumer.
Book 3 is trash I’m sorry. It’s rushed. It makes no sense the plot is contrived. It’s just not very good regardless of the endgame. She improved a lot in her second series though
tbh i just don’t think the books are very good 🤷🏼♀️ there’s basically no plot in the first two, the plot of the third borders on absurdity, and they just aren’t very descriptive so it’s hard to get into the scenes and the characters. the writing style is super basic and disjointed. cari can read did a video reading them and explains it better but i just didn’t really like them (i read the books after starting the show).
tatbilb is better so i think she improved as a writer over time but i just don’t think the tsitp books are that great. at the end of the day being successful doesn’t mean you’re a good author (colleen hoover is a prime example LOL).
I think Jenny is an incredible TV author. I don’t like her book writing as much but she’s clearly doing something right and I think her stories make for great TV
Tv author? Lol. You mean screenwriter?
No.. I mean her books make for good TV
Just wondering if Jenny has changed endings regarding her other projects. I am still new to the writer so not really well versed with her other projects, so wanted to ask you guys if you are familiar with her other works and if she is known to stick with ending or change the ending?
No, she hasn't
Sorry about that! I commented on your comment by mistake regarding something else! Sorry about that! But thank you! This really helps ease my anxiety!
It depends what you mean by changing.
The third To All the Boys movie has basically nothing to do with the third novel, almost nothing about the plots are related to each other except they have college anxiety.
BUT the HEA is the same
I meant as in the end game? Does that change
