Fantasy Romance
For those interested in fantasy elements combined with romance, several titles stand out. "Once Upon A Broken Heart" and "Divine Rivals" are popular choices that blend fantastical worlds with romantic plots [1:1]
[2:3]. "Shadows Between Us" offers a unique plot centered around romance in a fantasy setting, where the protagonist plans to marry and then kill the king but ends up falling for him instead
[1:2].
Popular Series
Many readers have enjoyed series like "A Court of Thorns and Roses," known for its rich fantasy world and compelling romance [4]. Cassandra Clare's works, including "The Mortal Instruments" and "Infernal Devices," are also highly recommended for their intricate plots and romantic subplots
[3:3]
[4]. The "Grisha Trilogy" and "Throne of Glass" are other popular series that combine fantasy with romance
[4].
Contemporary Romance
In the realm of contemporary YA romance, "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" by Jenny Han is a beloved series for its sweet and relatable love story [3:1]. Other notable mentions include "Fangirl" by Rainbow Rowell and "Me Before You" by Jojo Moyes, which offer engaging narratives with romantic themes
[3:4].
Recent Releases
For recent publications, "The Half Life of Love" by Brianna Bourne and "Breathless" by Jennifer Niven are highlighted as excellent contemporary romances [5:1]. "Today Tonight Tomorrow" by Lynn Painter is another recent favorite among readers
[5:5].
Hidden Gems and Diverse Narratives
Exploring queer fantasy can reveal hidden gems within the YA romance genre. Titles such as "Of Fire and Stars" by Audrey Coulthurst and "Girls of Paper and Fire" by Natasha Ngan offer unique perspectives and diverse storytelling [4:2]. Additionally, "Vampire Academy" and "The Selection Series" provide engaging narratives with strong romantic elements
[4:3].
I'm looking for some YA book suggestions, specifically ROMANCE. It doesn't matter whether it says 14+ or 16+ as long as it says "YA" or can be found in the "YA" section of a Barnes & Nobles, Target, etc., I'm all good.
You should know -- I'VE READ:
- The Shatter Me series (TM)
- Binding 13, Keeping 13, Saving 6, Redeeming 6, Taming 7 (CW)
- Powerless, Reckless (LR)
- A Good Girls Guide To Murder (HJ)
- If Only I Had Told Her, If Only He Had Been With Me (LN)
Shadows between us is set in a fantasy world and has fantasy elements but the whole plot of the book is about romance and revolves around the main romance. Definitely YA, no spice aside from some kissing. About the main character who plots to make the king fall in love with her so they can marry and she can become queen and she will kill him and take the throne. But her plans don’t really work out when she starts to fall in love with him.
Once Upon A Broken Heart and Divine Rivals are both great YA romantasies!!!
I ask as it’s the year 2024, and I’ve been looking for some good novels to read, such as something with fantasy and romance elements, but I don’t know where to start, so I decided to ask for some recommendations here.
I hope I am in the right place because if this is the wrong place to ask for such things, please let me know.
Infernal devices + last hours, the cruel prince, ruby red, once upon a broken Heart
Really enjoyed Ruby Red! And it’s a trilogy :)
Divine rivals, cruel prince series, six crimson cranes
I second Divine Rivals!
A far wilder magic my Allison Saft. My biggest thing is the romance has to be believable. If one party just likes the other for no reason it’s an instant no for me. This one is a slow build with two compelling characters. Also a fantasy 1920’s esk world with alchemy
Definitely Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries 🙌
This is technically classified as an Adult Fantasy, bit I do think it's fine for ya audiences
It's weird because isn't ACOTAR YA? But it is filled with spice. Encyclopedia of Feries is so much less explicit.
This has been on my tbr for awhile now, I really need to get to it, it looks so good! XD
It's so good! I put together travel itineraries and just did an Ireland one and kept thinking about one of the characters 😎
Actually if you like this book then you might like The Invisible Library, too. 🙌 I am on book 3 and it's so good I have my husband reading.
An ember in the ashes by Sabaa Tahir
If you read it let me know, I’m always down to gush about it

Sarah Dessen has a variety of books but often romance. She's a fantastic story teller.
Court of Thorns and Roses is worth it for the second book alone lol
Daughter of Smoke and Bone is so much more than a romance
The Infernal Devices is gorgeous and fun
That Inevitable Victorian Thing is unique, and lovely
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, and Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan are my current contemporary favorites.
The Game of Life and Death
I am just getting into this genre, so excited see what other people recommend. My favorites so far have been the To All the Boys I've Loved Before series by Jenny Han, and The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles) by Amy Spalding. Both are super sweet and were delightful to read.
i really like fantasy series but they have to have romance in them. i loved a court of thorns and roses, the mortal instruments and everything cassandra clare has wrote, the grisha trilogy, throne of glass, and of course the classics like percy jackson and harry potter. i’ve pretty much read all the popular series, looking for hidden gems. i’m currently reading the young elites right now.
I find that if you are looking for hidden gems in romance, then taking a look at queer fantasy is one way to get it (unless you are actively put off by it), because it is it's own small literary niche, that most people forget to recommend unless you are specifically asking for that:
Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst
Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan
Dragonoak by Sam Farren
Vampire Academy and it's follow up Bloodlines by Richelle Mead
Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine
Jane Jameson by Molly Harper
All vampire series that are good for different reasons but Jane is hysterical.
The Selection Series by Kiera Cass
Matched Series by Ally Condie
Both dystopian series that are teen romance focused
A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab
Poison Study By Maria V Synder is honestly a must read. It’s one of my all time favorites in YA.
the raven cycle? It is pretty popular so maybe you’ve read it but if not it’s one of my favourite series ever, and is definitely worth checking out.
Libba Bray's Diviners series is pretty romance-heavy. Teen love in the Roaring '20s, with some psychic powers, government conspiracies and ghost hunting thrown in.
Does anyone have recommendations on the best YA contemporary romance books published within the last five years?
I don’t think it’s categorized as romance technically, but Divine Rivals was so, so, so good.
Anything by Ann Liang
Books by Lynn Painter
Today Tonight Tomorrow
I’m a middle school teacher looking for some cute YA romance with absolutely no spice. Not even fade to black or implied like TFIOS, I want to feel totally comfortable putting them in my classroom library for kids to take home. I don’t want books that have romance as part of the plot since I already have a lot of books that feature it but don’t center it. With the rise of romance being so popular on BookTok, a lot of my girls are more specifically interested in romance, but so many of the books I see have smut or are dark, and it’s become increasingly hard for me to discern what is true YA/Teen Lit and what is New Adult. For reference, I love love love Tweet Cute by Emma Lord, To All The Boys by Jenny Han, PS I Like You by Kasie West, and anything Morgan Matson puts out, and my kids like them too! I’m looking for something more in that vein of sweet, sort of silly and young still, and very limited drama. My girls are trying to read Twisted Love or Hooked, and I want to offer a more age appropriate story with first relationships/kisses etc. and healthier dynamics.
Not just a Moment by Ivy Wilson is great, its a small town HEA, clean romance, kisses only
Opposite of Always by Justin A. Reynolds. His other book Early Departure would probably work as well, but I haven't read it yet so I can't confirm.
The Mirror Visitor quadrilogy maybe, it has an important romance but to me it's not the most important and its advancement is quite slow
Hooked in middle school? 💀
Once Upon a Broken Heart series is quite tame. I’ve only read part of the first book because I found it quite juvenile, and I didn’t know it was firmly YA.
And maybe Sarah Dessen books?
Good evening you beautiful and helpful people,
I have a 15 year old daughter who has asked for romances to read. She is very advanced for her age, she reads well above her 'suggested age level', but still cringes when people kiss on the tv, and will walk out of the room if there is anything 'physical' happening.
I am hoping you could suggest some 'devastating' or 'change-your-life' romances (this is quoting my 15 year old 😆), which are clear of anything explicit, but not simplified to a teen level.
Thank you all so much!
Edited to add: Thank you so much, everyone! I will take the time to thank everyone individually once I get the chance to sit down. She is at this very moment poring over this amazing list 🥰
Turtles All the Way Down by John Green. There is a romance, but no sex.
Also Fault in Our Stars by the same author. It’s a YA, but it has a very mild, non graphic sex scene.
She'll like gothic romance mystery novels, mistress of mellyn by victoria holt, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier , window in the square by Phyllis a Whitney.
DO NOT let her read Flowers in the Attic haha
or Forever by Judy Blume 😂
I've never read that one!
I spit my soda when I read this 😂
Jane Eyre!
Vast majority of fiction written in 19th century is clean, there's a collection of 19th century novels on archive org, every romance i read was clean .
A cousin is pressuring her to marry him against her will but they certainly don’t kiss!
Pride and Prejudice is the obvious choice here!
Yes, but its low points are probably sufficient for a 15 year old.
Hey, everyone!! I am looking for a book for my friends that has not read a book since ages, but would like to try reading one if it has a good romance. However, my friend has very specific taste and I could not find anything interesting for her. Please, help me 0_0
What she is looking in a book is:
*characters about the age 20 ( young adults). *not too much drama like love triangles *some secrets involved and a bit of action
I hope to hear your suggestions!!! Ty!!! +_+
Us: An Intimacy Innovation checks your boxes except it lacks action. It also has no toxicity. It's in the "Will they? Won't they?" vein of the first-love trope.
Ty!! :))
I just finished reading the entire series of The summer I turned pretty by Jenny Han to fix my reading slump and it did the trick excellently. There is love triangle but not as harsh as the Amazon prime take of it. I enjoyed every second of it and did nothing else but read for the last 2 days. It’s an easy read so I highly recommend to people who aren’t in the reading habit yet.
Hi! I'm looking for a good YA book where romance is the #1 focus. Any recommendations? :)
{To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han}
{A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard}
{Adorkable by Sarra Manning}
{The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon}
{Undeniable by Liz Bankes}
Everything, Everything also by Nicola Yoon is really good too
I’d say this focuses pretty heavily on what it’s like to have a chronic illness, though, so not entirely romance focused
Also, the twist ending ruined the book for me personally
I haven't read that one because I got spoiled for the ending!
Anything by Kasie West, those are adorable. I've only read P.S I like you and by your side but they're adorable.
And she drives me crazy.
Anna and the French Kiss is one of my fav YA romances!
Oh I heard about it but haven't read it. I didn't realize it was YA
Also, “Lola and the boy next door”! Same author and Anna is in it too!
LOVE this one - so so cute
This vicious grace if you want it fantasy flavoured
I actually like it fantasy flavoured, but I also already have read This Vicious Grace. It was pretty good! :D
Love + Trauma. She's a goddess though.
I used to read all the time, but found my life was getting hectic and I rarely had time to enjoy a good book. Recently, I’ve been trying to focus on “me time” and have gotten back into reading. I have been searching and searching for some good romance novels for young adults and have only come across Colleen Hoover books. I’ve tried to read many of her books but usually can not get into them or just simply find the relationships too toxic to enjoy. If anyone could give me some good recommendations, I’d greatly appreciate it!
Fools in Love by Rebecca Podos (It’s a compilation of short stories)
Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer
Somewhere Only We Know by Maureen Goo
I Love You So Mochi by Sarah Kuhn
Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch
I like S.K. Ali! Love From A to Z was pure loveliness. I also recently read The Boy From the Mish by Gary Lonesborough, which is a beautiful queer Aboriginal YA story.
The Catalogue of the Universe by Margaret Mahy.
The best YA romance that I’ve ever read is Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. No other YA romance compares imo. It’s so beautiful, heartbreaking, and tender.
Ignore the sequel though, just pretend it doesn’t exist.
