[4:1].

These recommendations offer a variety of stories that echo the themes and style of Jenny Han's beloved series, providing readers with new adventures in the realm of YA romance.
She is the author “to all the boys” series on Netflix and “the summer I turned pretty” on Amazon prime. Nothing against her and I love her tv shows (since there is some kind of Asian representation). But the fact that she always pairs AF with WM shows the deep rooted mentality of what a desirable man should be (aka white male). Literally all her story plots are how young Asian female or half Asian female got hit on by a bunch of white male and it ends up being a fairy tale story for the AF. It is quite sad even with AF author/writer, AM still wouldn’t stand a chance…
Amy Tan, Maxine Kingston-Hong, Celeste Ng, etc, et al got some serious competition to distort and pervert the culture and sexuality for WMs even some more now...
Plain and simple, she is one of those self-hating Asian women who want to spread their agenda, there isn't much beyond that.
Nothing against her? You sure you’re in the right subreddit?
Another easy boycott.
yeah, she loves af/wm pairing, does she have a white partner? LOL please let me know if you find any asianxasian love stories!! sex and vanity by kevin kwan has a wasian female x asian male story which is cute af too
Basically, HS romance that's kinda crazy with it's messiness and miscommunication. Extra points if there's a love triangle.
I really like Jenny Han’s Burn for Burn series! Nobody seems to know about it for some reason.
For real!!!!! It's Jenny's best work (imo) but it doesn't get the same recognition as it deserves. I just finished the series and I'm trying to find books similar, but I am sadly failing 😭
Loveboat, Taipei by Abigail Hing Wen fits the bill for this. Jaw dropping drama and honestly one of the best love triangles I’ve read (like I honestly didn’t mind who’d she end up with bc they both weren’t bad).
Also, the movie adaptation “Love in Taipei” is coming this month 👀
Abbi Glines (The Vincent Boys)
Lauren Barnholdt (Sometimes It Happens)
Stephanie Perkins (Lola and the Boy Next Door)
Susane Colasanti (Something Like Fate)
Jennifer Echols (The One that I Want)
Elizabeth Scott (The Unwritten Rule)
…All are veterans in the HS contemporary romance genre. The books I mentioned in parenthesis have love triangles.
Girl I could kiss u rn holy
Haha I used to read a lottttt of books in this genre. It’s been a long while since I’ve read some of them, so can’t say how great the quality will be now, but their books def will have the tropes you’re looking for!!
Omg Lauren Barnholdt, what happened to her?? I read all her books plus her sister Kels.
I miss her books so much!
Honestly no idea! She kind of fell off the map. Not sure if I would love her stuff as much now that I’m older, but yea I used to be obsessed with her books.
The OG Gossip Girl series by Cecily Ziegesar
Katie Cotugno’s books; 99 days series
Can you tell I love Minho and Kitty? I kind of hate that Jenny didn't write any more books :'(
I was a teen librarian, when these books were first popular. I feel like Meg Cabot, Sarah Desen, and Morgan Matson wrote novels that were very similar in tone. For adult authors Tessa Bailey and Emily Henry are reminiscent too.

Maurene Goo's writing style has a similar vibe to Jenny Han. I've only read I Believe in a Thing Called Love and The Way You Make Me Feel but they were solid YA books.
So I used to exclusively read YA teen romance type books in high school, then went three years without reading, to now reading primarily mystery/thriller books. I just binged The Summer I Turned Pretty TV series and it reminded me of how much I loved reading the books. So, now I am trying to find books or authors that have a similar vibe to Jenny Han!
Thank you all!
The Summer I Turned Pretty is a trilogy, if you haven't read them all.
oh, I have! I’ll probably reread them again this week, though.
Somewhere Only We Know by Maurene Goo
I’ll Be the One by Lyla Lee
Made in Korea by Sarah Suk
I Love You So Mochi by Sarah Kuhn
thank you!!
Hi! I'm looking for books similiar to 'To All The Boys I've Loved Before' trilogy and 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' trilogy. Would prefer a romance book where the characters are a little bit older, but not necessary. Thank you in advance!
Loved Jenny Han! What aspect are you looking for: the love triangles, or just summer romance?
Right?! I love the way she writes her characters. Hmm I honestly am open to any suggestions you have. I would be happy with either of them!
Sorry for the late response! Here's some recs I think you'll really like:
As the title says. Please recommend any books that have that similar theme of mystery set in a wuxia, xianxia or xuanhuan world. I prefer if the book wasn't completely centered on the main romance and features fleshed out side plots and interesting side characters. If you haven't read Nan Chan then you recommend based on:
Thank you!
Liu Yao (Coins of Destiny) - it's Xianxia, plot focused, full of truly lovable side characters for which you will feel, with a spark of tragedy which you will probably enjoy if you liked Nan Chan. It's a journey about a found family trying to find their place in the world.
Copper Coins - Xuanhuan (very Feng Shui focused), also plot focused and also with characters going to journey to solve mystery about the past like in Nan Chan, and there's also a dragon main character.
These and also Three Hundred Years Without Immortal. It also strongly reminded me of Nan Chan. And it’s set in the same universe as Copper Coins (i think)
Oh, I just started that one yesterday and your comment makes me even more excited about it, thank you! And yes, as far as I know, it should be the same universe as Copper Coins and Panguan.
Will check it out, thanks
Thanks!
I’m not really sure why, but The Sword Named No Way Out feels really similar to Nan Chan in my head. Maybe it’s because both stories feature characters who were once powerful mythical beings before the current events. Maybe it’s that one steamy sex scene (TSNNWO only has one, but it’s a good one). Or maybe it’s just the overall vibe - where the MC is incredibly powerful but also absolutely clueless and adorably naive.
Thank you this is definitely going on my list
So i distinctly remember that it was set in Washington State, I think Seattle. The girl got a box, I think, from an ancestor with ancient coins that glowed and got hot. She had to defeat i think the embodiment of the coins using her skills in wing chun. I think the first one she got was the crane.
Its driving me nuts that I cant remember what it was called! I think there were 3 or four books in the series.
Edited to add i think I read this in middle/high school, so between 2005 and 2012.
The Kung Fu Princess series (starting with Daughter of Light) by Pamela Walker?
Yes!! Thank you so much! Solved!!
Yay! Happy I could help. The autoflair on this sub is SOLVED SOLVED SOLVED so make sure you comment/reply with that :)
SOLVED SOLVED SOLVED
I just finished Julie Chan is Dead and I loved it! I was completely captivated by the first line. I was in a major reading slump before reading it and kept picking up a ton of duds. I’m so happy this one worked so well for me. I would recommend it for fans of Yellowface by RF Kuang and the movie Blink Twice! Has anyone else read it yet?
I finished it last week and I really loved it as well! In some parts, it almost reminded me of Bunny by Mona Awad, although I really enjoyed reading this more.
I still haven’t read Bunny! I get it recommended all the time and I don’t know why I haven’t picked it up. I think it’ll have to be my next read!
I had the same thought and also enjoyed it a little more than bunny! It was a little more cohesive
I finished it at about 4am last night! I couldn’t put it down. I loved how it balanced serious, funny, and suspenseful. The author wrote so descriptively. I wasn’t expecting too much but really enjoyed it too.
I’ve had an arc of this, but just didn’t catch my interest. Will definitely have to bump it up on my tbr list!
Thanks for the recco! Adding it to my list.
I hope you love it!! 💗
Omg this book took quite a weird turn that I didn’t expect 🤣if you like the whole influencer vibe you should check out You Will Never Be Me by Jesse Q Sutanto. I really enjoyed this one
So weird
I was just wondering what everybody's thoughts are on what is next for Jenny? What they'd like to see her do?
I have been obsessed with the screen adaptations of TATBILB and TSITP- but the books much less so, perhaps because they target YA and I am most certainly nowhere near that anymore! I found the books a bit superficial and underdeveloped- but again, probably I am the wrong demographic.
I'd love for Jenny to write a non YA love story as new material. I'd be really intrigued to see if a non YA Jenny Han project would hook me in maybe even more!
Interested in everyone's thoughts around this....
I hope she does get a bit more involved in XO Kitty and that that runs for a few more seasons with her full focus. It has the potential for a Netflix film as well. I feel like that show has a lot of potential. And could be even better with more time and investment. I prefer it to TATBILB by quite a stretch even though it has no book source material but exists in the same universe.
It’s tricky for Jenny and what she does next as two huge franchises with beloved characters are ending for her and it’s likely XO Kitty has one or two more seasons maximum. I expect she might need to go in a new direction. So as you suggest maybe she’ll leave YA behind and try something darker/more complex. It’s hard though as she has nailed that demographic and audience and will have people eagerly awaiting her next, which is almost guaranteed success or at least interest and a ready-made audience.
That comes with drawbacks too though as she gets held to her books a lot and because the relationship/character ‘wars’ in her fandoms can get quite intense, I feel it sort of limits her creative freedoms as people can have specific and high expectations. So I think she should try something different.
I wonder if she sticks with TV and film and doesn’t return to writing novels for a while. I’m similar to you in that I have browsed the books and don’t connect with them but love the shows and the characters she creates.
I agree with everything you have said here.
It'll maybe be a choice between continuing with her YA niche that she does well, versus moving into something new and different... or both!
I guess life is about taking risks! Maybe she has enough YA stock that she can dip into other things now for a couple of years and still return to it.
She hasn’t touched xo kitty at all this season with filming! It’s so weird to see her so disconnected. It really is a good show (with the second season being much better than the first)
Perhaps she’ll be more involved now, you never know.
I may have imagined this but I thought I read that Jenny Han was writing a new book that wasn’t YA.
Oooo I'd definitely read this if it isn't YA!
Ooooooo. I hope she continues to adapt books. She does a great job. Maybe its just when its her work but i would love to see her work on Emily Henry movie adaptations.
I’d love a Laurel / Susannah prequel
I'm sure I'm not the only one who watched "We were liars" while waiting for TSITP. Since that's going to get a prequel about the moms, they could do another parallel with TSITP. Though I'm not sure if a TSITP prequel would be set at the summer house or rather at college.
I just want my kitty and Minho endgame. Bonrad is confirmed. 😭
AGREED 👏🏽. Minho and Kitty are my faves 😍🥰
