TL;DR
Budget-Friendly Options
For students primarily focused on assignments and school work, a laptop in the ₹45K–₹65K range is recommended as it provides solid performance without overspending [1:1]. Lenovo Yoga and Acer models are also suggested for their portability and battery life
[1:3].
Performance for Creative Work
Students requiring laptops for graphic design or video editing should consider models with good integrated graphics. Ryzen laptops are noted for their speed and efficiency [2:1]. The ASUS G14 and MSI Prestige series offer powerful options within the budget
[3:1],
[3:2].
Durability and Battery Life
MacBook Air with an M1 chip is highly recommended for its exceptional battery life (15+ hours) and multitasking capabilities [5:1],
[5:2]. Lenovo ThinkPads are known for their durability and long-term reliability
[1:4],
[5:5].
Gaming and Multitasking
For students interested in occasional gaming alongside productivity tasks, Asus VivoBook or ZenBook with RTX3050 offers a balance of performance and screen quality [5:3],
[5:4]. Lenovo Legion and Acer Nitro are also viable options for those who need a dedicated GPU
[4:1],
[4:3].
Additional Considerations
When selecting a laptop, consider factors such as weight and portability, especially if you'll be carrying it around campus. It's advisable to test laptops in-store if possible, or ensure there's a return policy in case the fit isn't right. For those who might need more specialized features like streaming or heavy multitasking, exploring brands like Dell XPS or HP Omen could be beneficial [4:2].
So gonna be very honest, idk anything abt tech and I need a laptop as I'll be starting uni soon. The main purpose is assignments, school work etc. I tried to research but all of it seemed very overwhelmed and I didn't know where to start. So having no clue, I just decided to try on here. I honestly have no clue about the budget, my dad said i can get one upto 1L but is a laptop that expensive worth it for school work? I need reasonable alternative suggestions. Can yall please give me suggestions or recommendations?
You can find thinkpads at a good price online.
Okayy will look into it fs
another option would be a lenovo Yoga as they are made in mind to be used by students (but I told you about thinkpads cause they are pretty good and can serve in the future for also work/home use)
A mid-range Lenovo or Acer with good battery and speed will do. Focus on portability.
Noted! Thanks :)
Totally feel you—laptop shopping without a tech background feels like trying to order food in a language you don’t speak. “RAM? SSD? i7? Is this a laptop or a spaceship?”
First off, for school work, assignments, and note-taking, you definitely don’t need to spend a full ₹1L. That’s like using a Ferrari to go grocery shopping. Nice, but unnecessary (unless you're also planning to do video editing, 3D modeling, or become a part-time hacker).
Here’s the sweet spot:
I put together a chill, no-jargon guide just for students like you that breaks it down simply (and includes some affordable recommendations that won't roast your dad’s wallet):

Hope this clears up the chaos a bit—and congrats on starting uni! 🎓✌️
Thank you this was very helpful!!
No worries, its what Im here for, feel free to shoot me a DM if you need anything else
Hello everyone, I’m a student looking for advice on a laptop under $1000. I mainly need it for studying, working, and graphic design. I rarely play games, so I’m hoping to find something that can perform well for the next few years without worrying about it slowing down.
Recommend this laptop.
Thanks
Interested as well.
I like the Ryzen Laptops. They have good speed, low battery drain. The ones that I listed have good integrated graphics. If your graphics design classes recommend a graphics card, reply back and I will try to find something.

$1000 might be tough for graphic design. I’d look into the ASUS G14 2024. Around that price range for the 16gb version. Super thin. Portable and powerful. Although only 16gb of ram.

Hi r/suggestlaptops ! I'm helping a student find a new laptop that can handle schoolwork but also some streaming and video editing on the side. The budget is around $1000, give or take a bit. Key things to consider: good performance for multitasking and creative work, decent battery life for campus, and a solid display for video editing. Bonus if it’s lightweight and portable!
I've seen people recommend brands like Dell XPS and MacBook Air for students, but the video editing and streaming part makes me wonder if something with a dedicated GPU is better. What do you all think?
Any specific models or features I should focus on? Appreciate detailed opinions and real-world experiences. Thanks in advance!
Macbook can handle it pretty well, but if dedicated gpu is a priority then go with hp victus ,hp omen or lenovo loq .
Lenovo Legion or Acer Nitro might be good options to explore
Lenovo Legion or Acer Nitro could be great all-around options
Hi guys, I need to buy a laptop for my sister who is a student, budget under $1000, not much requirements just durability and long battery life, she also doesn't play games much, anyone have any recommendations
It's the MacBook Air M4 13" without a shred of doubt, the best battery life in its class (15+ hours), only outperformed by its 16" variant (20+ hours), M4 chip is crazy fast for web, multitasking, the best sound and microphone quality, the best webcam quality thanks to the M4 ISP that is basically taken from iPhone. And MacOS is very reliable for non tech savvy users.
Asus vivobook is the best bang for the buck. Get the one with the ai hx 370 cpu and you're set for both occasional light gaming and productivity. plus you get a better screen for the price
Thank for your advice
asus vivobook or zenbook both are good options. it has a very good oled screen with very low harmful blue light. bonus if you can get the version with the rtx3050 for some gaming and mildly demanding tasks if needed
Lenovo ThinkPad are the best
110% look into a MacBook! Best for productivity, multitasking, and definitely better life than a gaming laptop. Can watch content on a nice screen with it too. Can’t do much gaming, but for a student in that budget range, MacBook’s are fantastic. Look for models with an M1 chip or above. Hope this helps :)
I think they got a new m4 mac at js 999 this year
I'm going to my first year in college and need a laptop. I have a flexible budget but would like to keep it around or under 1000 USD. My absolute max is 1200, I'm purchasing in the US.
I'm mainly going to be using the laptop for schoolwork and taking notes in class. I have a few must-haves:
Thanks so much for any help! I'm available to answer any questions.

If you have Microcenter around, then take a look at this Lenovo Legion 5 15APH9 15.6" AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS 3.8GHz Processor; NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 8GB GDDR6; 16GB DDR5-5600 RAM; 512GB Solid State Drive for $799.

I'm a freshman for the Fall 2021 session in USF, and I would like some suggestions for good laptops that might be able to handle some light gaming.
I had previously considered a Surface Pro 7 (i-5, 8GB/128GB one along with a removable SD card for more storage), mainly because it's a 2-in-1 and I like being able to use a pen to jot down something quickly or add handwritten equations and diagrams to my notes. However, the price of buying the keyboard and the stylus along with the very limited gaming performance made me question my choice.
Another one I was eyeing is the Acer Swift 3, particularly the AMD 4700U with the Vega 7 configuration, since it seems to be able to handle some light gaming as well as passing the lightweight category for me. Obviously, this doesn't have any pen support but think using a graphics tablet or using something like the Rocketbook would be equally effective at making digital notes so it doesn't have to be a 2-in-1. However, I am confused if I should go for the 2020 one or the newer one with the improved display?

Here's a list of things I will be doing (the more demanding stuff):
Below are stuff that are necessary for me in a laptop:
I didn't mention anything about speakers since I usually use headphones or external speakers anyways, so it really doesn't matter.

Also on a side note, what do I need to do after I get the laptop? Like do I need to install Windows and the drivers and other stuff? What programs would be must-haves?
Hi, given what you're looking for, I'd go with the Acer Swift 3. It comes with a 8-core Ryzen 7 5700U processor, 8 GB RAM, a 512 GB SSD, and a 1080p 14" 300 nit 100% sRGB display. It should handle general use tasks just fine, as well as coding, light games, etc. It is only 2.65lbs, and battery life should be around 8 hours for light use.
Thank you so much man!
My pleasure, let me know if you have any questions.
I would recommend this MSI Prestige 14 because it is a great all around laptop, here is a short review:
Specs:
Intel Core i5-10210U, 16GB DDR4, 512GB SSD, backlit keyboard.
It comes with GTX 1650 MAX-Q GPU, You can check the below link to see how the GTX 1650

Here is a more detailed review of it Let me know what you think :)
Thanks man! That sounds like a good option too.
Not a problem, let me know if I can help you with anything else.
i would suggest the acer aspire 5 or the acer swift 3 but mainly acer aspire 5 is the best budget laptop there is. Just a side note: check the reviews of the laptops mentioned then think about the which one to buy. Also the screen brightness could be a problem but other than that you can go with the swift 3 or the aspire 5
Go with the acer! Repairability is a lot better, parts are cheaper and more manageable, plus when you eventually upgrade, you have a plaything to tinker around with and learn how and what not do when working on your own tools
Thanks for the suggestion!

Going back to school in the fall and need a new laptop. I have no preferances just thay it have a good baterry life. Any suggestions would be helpful!
According to your comment, you prefer a touchscreen and you want 13 inch screen, so I would recommend this Acer Spin 5 because it comes with everything you need, 10th generation, i7 quad core CPU, 16 GB of ram, good SSD storage of 512GB for faster boot up and loading, 13.5 inch 2K IPS touch screen, 100% sRGB coverage and good color gamut, and high build quality.
If you like Apple at all, the M1 Macbook Air is very good.
Any non apple products? I'm pretty deep in the Microsoft eco system.
I had a Dell XPS 13 before the MacBook. It’s a very nice machine but a bit pricey.
In that case try finding the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4. $999, amazing battery life.
what about surface
I second the M1 MacBook Air Suggestion. Battery life is insane. I regularly finish work days using full brightness all day (I work outside a lot), with around 30% battery left at the end of the day. Also, the fan-less exhaust system is incredible. I sit in full sunlight, working all day and I don't notice any lag in performance. I've never even felt it warm up. It's seriously a marvel of tech to me. The keyboard is responsive, but soft. The trackpad is the best I've ever used. It sounds small, but clicking and dragging by gently increasing the pressure on the trackpad was a revelation. Movement across the MacOs ecosystem is snappy and everything is instant. The move over from Windows was seamless for me. To be fair, I've got all my storage up in the cloud, so I didn't have to move much onto the HD. 100% the best machine I've owned in my 34 years.
EDIT: Refurbished for $849 on Apple.com
Whats apps do you work with? How well would Android Studio or Photoshop/illustrator perform? Can you plug a second monitor? And thanks.
I just switched my family over to Lenovo Thinkpads. You pay a bit more, but the build quality is top-notch. T series is more durable, X series is lighter
Yoga Slim 7 Pro with AMD 5000 series processor
OR
If you need thunderbolt 4 go with Intel Tiger Lake.

P.S. It's not yet released (AMD ver. with 5000 series), but should come in June (rumours).
I think it's a good laptop because: x2 fans, good screen for the price, good thermals according to reviews, 16:10 screen, 90Hz screen (maybe only that one with 400 nits)
RAM is soldered to the motherboard. Well, it's ultrabook after all
Personally I would grab AMD with 16GB

<$1000 CAD (but prefer $800 or less lol, the cheaper the better)
NO
battery life and performance is important but not major. I will be using this for school to write notes, do research, light browsing, watching lectures. I dont need it to be amazing because I have a PC where I do my school work at home and an old laptop (this laptop is heavy tho so it hurts my back).
Very important! Preferably 3 pounds or less. My old laptop is 5 pounds + so it hurts my back tbh 😭
13 inch or smaller, 14 inch is the max as long as it's not heavy.
No major programs or games. I just need internet access, word, and excel (or Google docs and Google sheets if suggesting chromebooks).
N/A
No requirements.
Honestly looking for a basic and cheap laptop that I can use on the go. It has to be lightweight and has decent battery life. I dont really need amazing specs because I have a PC that I use as my main computer.
Is this your max can you push your budget higher?
best laptops for students under $1000
Key Considerations for Student Laptops Under $1000:
Performance: Look for at least an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor for smooth multitasking and performance in applications.
RAM: Aim for a minimum of 8GB of RAM. This will help with running multiple applications simultaneously without lag.
Storage: SSDs (Solid State Drives) are preferable for faster boot times and application loading. A minimum of 256GB SSD is recommended.
Battery Life: A laptop with at least 8 hours of battery life is ideal for all-day use on campus.
Weight and Portability: Lightweight laptops (around 3-4 lbs) are easier to carry around for classes and study sessions.
Display Quality: A Full HD (1920 x 1080) display is important for clarity, especially for reading and working on projects.
