Best Ultrabooks Under $1000

TL;DR

 • HP Envy 13: Good specs for the price, including a 4K display and dedicated graphics [1:1].
 • Lenovo Slim 7i Aura Edition: Offers an OLED touch display and strong performance [2:3].
 • Acer Swift 3: Lightweight with solid performance and battery life [5:1].

HP Envy 13

The HP Envy 13 is a popular choice among users looking for an ultrabook under $1000. It offers impressive specifications such as a 4K display, 8th generation Intel i7 processor, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD, along with an NVIDIA MX150 GPU. This makes it suitable for casual activities, college work, light photo editing, and even some light gaming [1:1].

Lenovo Slim 7i Aura Edition

For those interested in a sleek design and high performance, the Lenovo Slim 7i Aura Edition is recommended. It features a 14-inch 1920 x 1200 OLED touch display, Intel Core Ultra 5 258V processor, 32GB DDR5 RAM, and a 512GB SSD. The OLED screen provides vibrant colors, making it ideal for media consumption and creative tasks. The laptop is priced around $980, and there are often discounts available [2:3].

Acer Swift 3

The Acer Swift 3 is another excellent option, known for its lightweight design and good performance. It comes equipped with an AMD Ryzen 7 5700U CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. The 14-inch Full HD IPS screen offers 100% sRGB coverage, which is great for color accuracy. Its build quality and backlit keyboard add to its appeal, making it a reliable choice for students and professionals alike [5:1].

Dell XPS Series

The Dell XPS series, particularly the XPS 13, is frequently mentioned as a top contender in the ultrabook category. While finding a new model under $1000 can be challenging, refurbished options are available at lower prices. The XPS line is praised for its build quality, display, and overall performance [1:2][2:4].

Considerations for Refurbished Models

Several users have suggested considering refurbished models to get more value for your money. Websites like eBay and Dell's outlet store offer refurbished laptops at competitive prices. It's essential to ensure that these come with a warranty and return policy to mitigate any risks associated with buying refurbished products [1:6][5:5].

Im a student, i use a laptop for casual activities, college work, light photo editing. I dont rely on a laptop for gaming but i might do some light gaming. Nothing excessive. Perhaps. But only if you want to pay list price.

You can do better online. And much better on eBay - still for a new gen 6 computer.

Looking to buy a Laptop for work under $1100 from the US

I am looking to buy an entry level ultrabook within a week. Please suggest any great deals in the US.

-Windows OS

 • Fast and Snappy for everyday multitasking such as web browsing, spreadsheet
 • Slim and sleek
 • Good Display
 • 14 inch or 13 inch

Don’t mind if its an overkill for the budget. I really liked the X1 Cabonn. Its built like a tank and sleek too.

I think the ThinkPad x1 Carbon is out of your budget? It usually runs $1500+. I don't see any in the USA at least costing less that unless you get a really old model or a refurbished on.

Here are my recommendation:

$980 - Lenovo Slim 7i Aura Edition (14" Intel) | 1920 x 1200 OLED Touch | Intel Core Ultra 5 258V | 32GB DDR5 | 512GB SSD

 • Coupon Code for $40 off: BUYMORELENOVO

Make sure select the configuration with the Core Ultra 5 258V processor, it will also upgrade your RAM to 32GB. The ram is soldered on all best to choose the faster processor + ram now. As you will be doing a lot of multi-tasking and spreadsheet work, it is very nice to have 32GB ram as it will feel very snappy. The design is also sleak. The one note that most reviewers online say about this laptop is that it has an insane battery life even with the OLED display with 400 nits of brightness. I mean 12-14+ hours of mix usage, so if you travel a lot this is a great great laptop.

Do you suggest an older generation XPS 14 or 13? Is there any deal on those?

Thanks for a quick response.

Curious-Ebb-8451 · 1 month ago

Yes actually XPS 13 are still on sale, I believe the XPS 14 has been sold out and being discontinued. By signing up to the Dell newsletter, you can get an additional 10% off, It takes a while for the code to be emailed to you though (a few hours), so wait until you see it.

This one is a good one with the intel core ultra 7 256V, very capable processor with Intel Arc 140V. Should allow you to do most things well.

Uni student looking for a very light laptop ( <$1000 Canada)

Posted by Catstielli · in r/SuggestALaptop · 1 month ago
 • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

<$1000 CAD (but prefer $800 or less lol, the cheaper the better)

 • Are you open to refurbs/used?

NO

 • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

battery life and performance is important but not major. I will be using this for school to write notes, do research, light browsing, watching lectures. I dont need it to be amazing because I have a PC where I do my school work at home and an old laptop (this laptop is heavy tho so it hurts my back).

 • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very important! Preferably 3 pounds or less. My old laptop is 5 pounds + so it hurts my back tbh 😭

 • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13 inch or smaller, 14 inch is the max as long as it's not heavy.

 • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No major programs or games. I just need internet access, word, and excel (or Google docs and Google sheets if suggesting chromebooks).

 • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

N/A

 • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

No requirements.

 • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Honestly looking for a basic and cheap laptop that I can use on the go. It has to be lightweight and has decent battery life. I dont really need amazing specs because I have a PC that I use as my main computer.

Affordable Ultraportable Laptop (US)

Posted by bouncehaus · in r/SuggestALaptop · 3 months ago

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.

Ideally between 300 and 600 USD.

Are you open to refurbs/used?

Refurb yes, used no

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I'm looking for a light and portable laptop to use for errands and web browsing when traveling. I use a surface for work and really don't like the keyboard and stand, so something that supports its own weight and doesn't need a stand is important.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

The more portable the better. I used to have an asus netbook in the early 2010s and I loved that thing. It was very easy to take with me on flights or use on the couch.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I prefer a smaller screen so its easier to fit in a backpack. Ideally 13" or smaller, but I'm not sure if laptops under 13" really exist anymore.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I expect to use it mainly for web browsing and Microsoft office or google docs/sheets. I have a gaming PC for everything else.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

It would be nice to have a usb port to avoid having to use adapters, but its not a deal breaker.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

If there really isn't anything like I described above in my price range, I could just get a macboook air, but it seems hard to justify the cost when I only really plan on using it for errands while traveling or the odd times I feel like using a laptop on my couch.

I have a 16" gaming laptop that is on its last legs. Its so big and heavy though that it I never bothered taking it anywhere.

Since you care about portability, I would recommend this Asus Vivobook 14 because it comes with :

Specs:

 • Screen: 14” FHD screen.
 • CPU : i5-1235U
 • Ram : 8GB LPDDR5X
 • Storage : 256GB SSD

Why I am recommending it:

 • Has a very good CPU for Office 365, some Python/ data science stuff.
 • Long battery life.

Best ~$1000 laptop

 • **Total budget: 25,000 MX pesos

 • Are you open to refurbs/used?

-Yes, if available but preferably new

 • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
 1. Performance
 2. Portable
 3. Durable as I am bike commuting
 4. Solid battery life
 • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I prefer lighter and thinner because I’ll be carrying it.

 • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Prefer 14 inches and under

 • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Typically office, zoom, and general browsing but it would be nice to be able to do some editing and gaming.

 • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I normally play older strategy games like Total War and Civilization. Would like to play some more recent titles too. Lowest Settings are okay.

 • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality would be a big one for me since I’m commuting

 • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I’m looking for a laptop for work: something compact, durable, and light because I bike commute. Will be using office, zoom, and general use. I would like it to last at least five years if not more. I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y700 which I love. I play games and work from home on it. The problem is that it doesn’t close because my brother broke the screen and passed it to me. So, I’ve been using an old HP pavilion G6 from 2012 which is slow and has no battery life. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I picked up a new Lenovo Ideapad from Best Buy. It seems to be a Best Buy exclusive. However, there are some nice laptops that are in the IdeaPad 5 & 5i category. Mine had a Ryzen 7 chip, 12gb of memory, 512 SS drive. It is light and fast : highly recommend.

The high end of Dell 15 Inspiron 3000 looked nice too. It is heavier than xps but not bad with the SS drive.

Go for the Acer Swift X SFX14-41G-R1S6 as it is ideal for you. This laptop has an aluminum chassis that makes the laptop both lightweight and durable. Its processor and GPU combo is a powerful one that will allow the laptop to run intense programs meant for editing, CAD etc. Additionally, its RTX 3050TI GPU will be able to game well. Its battery life is over 8 hours so you can have it all day without needing to run to an outlet

14" Full HD 100% sRGB | AMD Ryzen 7 5800U | NVIDIA RTX 3050Ti Laptop GPU | 16GB LPDDR4X | 512GB NVMe SSD | Wi-Fi 6 | Backlit Keyboard | Windows 10 Home

new or used? cause u can find some decent ones refurbished. amazon has a plan where u can buy it and return it if you don’t like it. do some research on what the processor, ram and hard drive do n then go from there. external HD helps a lot too imo if you’re using it for work

 • Are you open to refurbs/used? Open to it, but I'd prefer new
 • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I am optimizing for performance, battery life, and weight
 • How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat important but not the most important thing. I will travel with this likely about once per month
 • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-14"
 • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. My primary uses will be internet browsing, watching videos, Excel/Word, and some gaming - usually older games from mid-late 2000s / early 2010s (think Rome Total War, Medieval 2 Total War, Age of Empires, etc.)
 • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Games from mid-late 2000s, such as Rome Total War, Medieval 2 Total War, Age of Empires 3, Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth. Would love some flex to play more modern games like Total War Three Kingdoms, but not needed as I don't game very often. I don't typically use the highest graphics settings.

Since you prefer a small screen size, and you are going to game which means that you are going to need good CPU and GPU, I would recommend Acer Swift X 3050Ti because it comes with :

Specs:

 • Screen: 14" Full HD 100% sRGB.
 • CPU : AMD Ryzen 7 5800U
 • GPU : NVIDIA RTX 3050Ti GPU
 • Ram : 16GB LPDDR4X
 • Storage : 512GB SSD

Why I am recommending it:

 • IMO it has the perfect balance between being powerful enough for gaming on the go while also being small/lightweight/long battery enough to also usage it as a travel/college laptop, so you basically get the best of both worlds.

 • Solid Build Quality: Generally built with good materials, ensuring durability . *Long battery life since you care about it

 • Very good CPU and GPU for internet browsing, watching videos, Excel/Word, and can run Rome Total War, Medieval 2 Total War, Age of Empires smoothly.

 • Lightweight since you are going to use this while traveling as it weighs 3lbs.

I see an M1 Pro MBP 2021 16/512 14” for about $70USD more than a MBA M3 13’ 16/256 , which would you go with ?

narc0leptik · 9 months ago

The best bang for your buck is going to be a used 512GB 16GB 2021 14" or 16" M1 Pro on Craigslist/Facebook Marketplace/Offerup (Stay away from the 13" MBP as this is just a Macbook Air with a fan and a touchbar). It has a way better display than the Macbook Air so it will be much more enjoyable to use; not to mention it has a better GPU than any of the Macbook Airs. You get the same display and chassis as the M2/M3 MBP (M4 has quantum dot display and the same chassis but I doubt anyone can tell a difference). It sells for upwards of $1000 on eBay, so $800 would be a fair price from a private seller for a 2021 16" M1 Pro which is what they would get after eBay fees if they sold on eBay. I would pay even less than that for 14" model and I would aim to pay 20 percent off of eBay prices from a private seller. You might luck out and find one with more ram or storage too.

There's really not much of a risk buying from a private party as long as you erase and reset the machine before handing over your money. Since heat is the number 1 enemy of electronics and laptops and there's no moving parts in a Macbook Pro besides the fan. There's really nothing to suddenly break on a Macbook Pro. With their ARM cpus they are more like an iPhone than any Windows laptop. When's the last time you have ever seen an iPhone suddenly stop working out of the blue?

You could also get a Macbook Air if you want to buy new, here's the deals on those: https://slickdeals.net/f/18026724-apple-macbook-air-13-15-laptops-m2-16gb-ram-256gb-ssd-more-799 Macbook Pro is still a better deal since it has superior display and the Pro comes with 512GB of space as a base model.

Good laptop for students under $1000

Posted by Skywalker2070 · in r/SuggestALaptop · 4 years ago

I'm a freshman for the Fall 2021 session in USF, and I would like some suggestions for good laptops that might be able to handle some light gaming.

I had previously considered a Surface Pro 7 (i-5, 8GB/128GB one along with a removable SD card for more storage), mainly because it's a 2-in-1 and I like being able to use a pen to jot down something quickly or add handwritten equations and diagrams to my notes. However, the price of buying the keyboard and the stylus along with the very limited gaming performance made me question my choice.

Another one I was eyeing is the Acer Swift 3, particularly the AMD 4700U with the Vega 7 configuration, since it seems to be able to handle some light gaming as well as passing the lightweight category for me. Obviously, this doesn't have any pen support but think using a graphics tablet or using something like the Rocketbook would be equally effective at making digital notes so it doesn't have to be a 2-in-1. However, I am confused if I should go for the 2020 one or the newer one with the improved display?

Here's a list of things I will be doing (the more demanding stuff):

 • coding (I am a Computer Science Major)
 • gaming (I usually play stuff like Genshin Impact and Rocket League on my current laptop, but I would also like to be able to play some shooters like Valorant)
 • editing videos for my guitar covers using Premiere Pro
 • having around 12 or 13 of my frequently visited Chrome tabs open at all times
 • playing the more demanding games through Project xCloud (Xbox's cloud gaming) using a Bluetooth controller

Below are stuff that are necessary for me in a laptop:

 • be 13" or 14" in size
 • reasonable performance to handle light gaming and all of the stuff mentioned above without too much issues
 • have an SSD (if possible a fast one) and not a hard drive
 • good keyboard (preferably with backlighting)
 • a good trackpad
 • have a good enough WiFi card
 • not too big or heavy
 • have decent battery life to last a day of classes
 • have a good selection of ports
 • NOT have a garbage webcam since I might have to do online classes
 • have a good enough screen with good colour accuracy and if possible thin bezels (tho I can still do with bigger bezels)

I didn't mention anything about speakers since I usually use headphones or external speakers anyways, so it really doesn't matter.

Also on a side note, what do I need to do after I get the laptop? Like do I need to install Windows and the drivers and other stuff? What programs would be must-haves?

Hi, given what you're looking for, I'd go with the Acer Swift 3. It comes with a 8-core Ryzen 7 5700U processor, 8 GB RAM, a 512 GB SSD, and a 1080p 14" 300 nit 100% sRGB display. It should handle general use tasks just fine, as well as coding, light games, etc. It is only 2.65lbs, and battery life should be around 8 hours for light use.

i would suggest the acer aspire 5 or the acer swift 3 but mainly acer aspire 5 is the best budget laptop there is. Just a side note: check the reviews of the laptops mentioned then think about the which one to buy. Also the screen brightness could be a problem but other than that you can go with the swift 3 or the aspire 5

Go with the acer! Repairability is a lot better, parts are cheaper and more manageable, plus when you eventually upgrade, you have a plaything to tinker around with and learn how and what not do when working on your own tools
