Best LEGO Sets for Adults

TL;DR

  • Rivendell and Lion Knights Castle are highly recommended for their stunning designs [1:1][1:2].
  • Barracuda Bay is a favorite among pirate enthusiasts [4:1][4:8].
  • The Starry Night offers a unique and artistic build [2:2].

Fantasy and Historical Themes

For fans of fantasy and historical themes, Rivendell from the Lord of the Rings series is considered one of the best sets due to its intricate design and visual appeal [1:1][1:3]. Similarly, the Lion Knights Castle is praised as an exceptional set that should not be missed before it retires [1:2]. For those who enjoy medieval settings, the Medieval Blacksmith set also comes highly recommended [2:4][2:5].

Pirate-Themed Sets

Pirates of Barracuda Bay is a standout choice for those nostalgic about classic pirate adventures. It's noted for its detailed shipwreck scene and ability to evoke childhood memories [2:1][4:1]. Another option is the 31109 Pirate Ship, which is appreciated for its brick-built design [2:7].

Artistic and Display Sets

The Vincent van Gogh - The Starry Night set is celebrated for transforming a famous artwork into a LEGO masterpiece, offering both a fun build and a beautiful display piece [2:2][2:10]. Additionally, the botanical collection provides aesthetically pleasing room decor that rivals actual plants [5:4][5:5].

Pop Culture and Movie-Inspired Sets

For pop culture enthusiasts, the Guardians of the Galaxy Ship offers a challenging build with over 1,000 pieces [5:1]. Fans of Indiana Jones might appreciate the Temple of the Golden Idol set, although it has been retired [1:5]. Other notable mentions include the Wall•E model and the Horizon Tallneck, both of which serve as excellent display pieces [4:12][5:2].

Recommendations Beyond Discussions

While these sets cover a range of interests, it's important to consider your personal preferences and space availability when choosing a LEGO set. If you're new to collecting or building, starting with smaller sets can help you determine what aspects of building you enjoy before investing in larger, more complex sets [3:1].

I've done several smaller ones, but out of the big ones I've done Hogwarts, Barad-dur, and the Millennium Falcon.

Rivendell is a must. It’s argued to be one of the best sets/builds ever. Especially if you already have Barad-dur.

I recently finished the Concord and really enjoyed it as well.

I really want Rivendell, but I have no where to put it and 8 unbuilt sets. I don’t want to get it and not build it. I am torn as to what to do.

Looking For the Best Set to Get Back Into Lego as An Adult (recommendations)?

Posted by WonderfulShelter · in r/lego · 3 years ago

Hey y'all, just as the title says, I'm looking for the best set to get back into Lego. I loved it as a kid, the Indiana Jones/Pirates were usually my favorites, then as I got a bit older the Harry Potter train set was my favorite if I remember correctly. I also loved the MARS one with the aliens and the pumps you could hit that shot them through the tubes! I went to Legoland as a kid over 20 years ago and it's still one of my best memories. Those Lego Racer games were so much fun too.

But I digress, I'm looking for some recommendations to get back in. Maybe one, two sets tops. I'm not a huge fan of technics or the car model stuff, and some of the IDEAS and Creators look really cool, but it's quite hard to choose, so I figured - why not ask the experts?

I'd be very grateful for all or any of your recommendations, and appreciate each response. thanks!

I would say pirates of barracuda bay but it retired the end of last year. Amazing throwback to 6285, and the full ship/ shipwreck scenes is amazing. Easily my favorite recent-ish build, but I absolutely love old pirate ships and collect them.

It is also a very good pirate ship! It’s all brick built, so didn’t quite hit me with the same sense of nostalgia as barracuda bay. But it looks great, doesn’t take up a 2ft cube of space, and is considerably less expensive!

Adult looking to get back into Legos - Seeking Recommendations on which sets to purchase

Posted by Econsmash · in r/lego · 5 years ago

I haven't played with Legos since I was a kid and really want to build a set. When I was a kid I always just had an assortment of miscellaneous lego pieces, but never any expensive/big sets. Now that I'm an adult and can afford to spend a little bit more on Legos, I'm seeking advice for some good sets to purchase and display for around $200-$250 or less.

I'd also like to build it with my wife as a bonding experience.

I've only just started looking and am a noob when it comes to lego collecting and buying. I see that sets typically are retired after a period of time and the old sets are hard to come by and expensive.

One set that I'm considering is the Pirates of Barracuda Bay set. I see that it's currently out of stock though. It looks really cool and detailed and would be fun to build and display.

https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/pirates-of-barracuda-bay-21322

I'm also interested in Harry Potter and Star Wars, but know those are typically more expensive. I'm really open to any recommendations for mid sized - large sets that are under the $250 level.

Greatly appreciate any recommendations or advice for getting back into Legos!

If you like Harry Potter, look at the Hogwarts sets (Clock tower, great hall) - they're not too expensive, can be joined together and have cute ideas and nice generic parts out of which you could always build another castle. You can even build simultaneously. Lots of stickers, though - I recommend moistening the parts with water and dishwashing detergent before applying, so you can still slide the sticker around.

I also recommend to have a look at the modular buildings. Like the Assembly Square, which is an anniversary set for the modulars and imo by far the nicest one out there right now. It might scratch on the top line of your budget, but prices will rise like crazy once it's retired, and it's well worth it.

1 upvotes on reddit

I really liked the remake of kylo ren's shuttle from star wars ($120). A modular building might be worth looking at too.

For a cheaper one, the toy store is very well designed. Also fun that it gets meta with little LEGO sets on the shelf of the toy store.

1 upvotes on reddit
Fat_Wallets · 5 years ago

Buy a few $20-$50 sets that you guys think are interesting looking. Then buy a few $100-$150 sets. After building and finding things you guys like about building, decide on a couple of bigger or one big set. Most adults can build any LEGO set, you just need to figure out your own type of build that is still fun and not tedious and boring.

Barracuda Bay gets my vote. It’s super fun and is great for display or play. Mine is surrounded by Lego sea life with pirates out in small boats fishing the shark infested water. An octopus is nearby as are many sting rays. Multiple monkeys have joined the constantly growing pirate crew along with the lone pig.

Have a browse on Rebrickable. You can buy electronic instructions, but you will have to source the pieces yourself via LEGO's Pick a Brick, Bricklink, and the like. I fancy building some of these myself at some point.

Gathering the needed pieces can be a lot of work if you go this route. If you'd rather just buy a kit, look at BlueBrixx, as already suggested.

It’s definitely Rivendell, my daughter is very rarely impressed by Lego sets and she kept coming by while I built it and commented on how beautiful it was. An honorable mention though would be the new blacksmith, it’s my second favorite build, although I haven’t built my lion’s castle yet, but I think the blacksmith will stay in second place unless bag end is even half as nice as Rivendell.

3 upvotes on reddit
itsshpadoinkleday · 8 months ago

I feel the same when it comes to favorite sets. I've got Blacksmith first, then Rivendell, and LKs Castle like a year later.

It still great, some techniques are amazing (putting first skewed part of the wall at an angle was a "wow" moment for me) but as a display for collecting dust it's not in the same league as those two in my opinion.

Castle feels more like an actual play set that needs additional work on the ramp (it's the weakest part of the build by far), some arranging of minifigures and a couple of trees to look really good. Rivendell and Blacksmith on the other hand are amazing from the moment you're done building and both are just making you smile when you're going past them every day.

2 upvotes on reddit

The blacksmith was an awesome build, id rank it above eldorado and viking village but the Lion's castle has been my favorite so far.

Honest question, what is the appeal of the Saturn V set?

I’ve had it myself, after purchasing a bulk via a local online marketplace, but I just can’t see it. Yet it still keeps being mentioned, whenever OP’s question is asked.

Is it about the building experience, which to me had a lot of repetition, or rather the historical and cultural relevance?

4 upvotes on reddit
DenseRestaurant5402 · 8 months ago

The build itself. Forget about the achievement of the creation of the most powerful rocket ever created, but the set is not just a white tube, everything was recreated, the tanks, the inner workings. For it was a blast to build and by the end of it, it was one of the best builds I ever did. But man that's just my opinion.

I get it. It just the way the building of a certain set makes you feel. My 3rd of the decade also contains the above Galaxy Explorer that took back to when was a kid. As for the yellow bricks, let's make a petition to Lego to UV treat the white parts.

Anyone got any recommendations as a birthday gift for an adult Lego fan?

Posted by SunnyShim · in r/lego · 2 years ago

He’s in his mid twenties and I want to get him a Lego set around $200-$300 or so and I’m not sure what to get. I’ve been browsing the entirety of the Lego store website and I’m not too sure what to get. Even he’s not sure what he wants either.

It should be something that’s more decorative than for actively playing with. I was thinking maybe a Star Wars set, marvel, or something else but I’m really not too sure.

If he’s into aviation and planes then I’d wait until the 4th of September and get the Concorde set for $200.

If he’s into Star Wars, get a UCS set, or basically any set from that line since every set in it is expensive and overpriced (in my opinion).

If he’s into cars go for some of the recent Lego Icons car builds like the corvette, delorean, Ferrari etc.

If he’s into marvel go for the battle scenes recently released of the guardians ship.

Or you can go down the route of getting some gift cards for him and he can get what he truly wants.
